Funding cuts Council shows off awards for Indigenous health service A service that supports local indigenous residents with chronic health problems has lost its funding and will no longer be available to patients after December. The Marrabinya Indigenous Health Support Service offers a wide range of services to patients with chronic conditions by providing assistance with specialist appointments, transport, accommodation, medical aids and some financial costs. Chronic diseases prioritised by Marrabinya include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, chronic kidney disease, cancer and liver disease. Recently funding by the Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN) for Marrabinya was withdrawn and the service was to have ended on June 30. Cobar Primary Health Care Centre (CPHCC) GP, Dr Sanjay Jamwal, said the centre has been referring local patients to Marrabinya since 2018. To date 76 local patients have been helped by the service with the management of their chronic conditions. He is very concerned about the closure of the Marrabinya program at the end of this year. “According to our information, currently 22 per cent of indigenous residents of Cobar have chronic diseases and, out of that, 12.6 per cent have been supported by Marrabinya to access specialist intense care and management. “It is a program that I term as “access services” regarding chronic care,” he said.
