Best rigs attend 2021 Cliffhanger

The 2021 Cliffhanger 4WD event was held at Mt Gap Station north of Cobar last week with the best rigs from all over Australia competing in three classes.

Famous for its long, hard stages, the off road event challenges teams in winching up rocks, navigational tasks, speedy dry creek runs and long course rally trials over five action-packed days.

The stages are all long lasting and typically combine several facets of winching, navigation and speed, some of which is carried out in night trials.

The event is also famous for its seemingly impossible vertical winch walls.

Finishing first in the Winch Truck (Challenge) Class this year was the CJS Racing team with Hella Racing in second place and the Blowout Racing team finished third.

In the Buggy Class, which was first introduced to the competition in 2019, the vehicles have been mostly built from scratch to show off their super flex rock crawling abilities.

First was the Cobar 50 Seven team (of Perry Stylianos and Mitch Jones pictured on the front page) with All Metal Magic second ahead of Energized Racing in third place.

The Super Tourer class, also known as the “budget entry build,” was taken out by the MaddMatt 4WD team with Matchbox Racing second and Leaf Spring Life finished third.

Cobar’s Rob Fing was also back competing again this year in the F’n C Racing No 14 car (also pictured on the front page).

Mt Grenfell plaque acknowledges Ngiyampaa culture A commemorative plaque was laid at the Mount Grenfell Historic Site on Saturday to acknowledge the Ngiyampaa cultural heritage values and significance of the area.

A parcel of 15,000 hectares around Mount Grenfell was formally handed back to the Ngiyampaa people during a visit to the site in December 2020 by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Environment Minister Matt Kean.

The newly reserved area is known as the Mount Grenfell National Park (an area of 9,209 hectares) and the Mount Grenfell State Conservation Area, which encompasses a further 6,340 hectares.

Together they form a protective ring around the culturally significant Mount Grenfell site so that it will be protected in perpetuity for the Ngiyampaa people.

The Mount Grenfell Board of Management arranged for the day of celebration for the community on Saturday now that COVID restrictions have been eased and 80 people gathered to celebrate the reservation of the site.

National Parks & Wildlife Service’s Central West Area Manager, Fiona Buchanan, attended Saturday’s ceremony and spoke about what led to the reservation of the land and the significance of the site.

“It has amazing birdlife out here. There are over 130 species of birds including some highly threatened species and a number of protected species of bats, that live in the hollows of the trees and in the caves,” Ms Buchanan said.

“This land has over 195 species of flora and fauna, animals, mammals, reptiles and birds that live out here on the national park.

“We at National Parks have been working

closely with the Mt Grenfell board of management to help care for both the cultural values and for the conservation.

“It’s not only the strong culture values that you all know and that is part of you and part of this land, there are also some really strong eco systems out here on the Mt Grenfell lands,” Ms Buchanan said.

Chair of the Board of Management, Colin Clark, spoke about the hard work done by community members over a long time to make the hand-back happen and said he is pleased to see it will be preserved for generations to come.

Mt Grenfell closed for three months

The Mount Grenfell Historic Site north west of Cobar, which is one of Cobar’s most popular tourist attractions, will be closed for the next three months.

The site is closed due to sealing work commencing on the Pulpulla Road (Shire Road 6), which is the access road to the site.

The $5.5million worth of major road works has been funded under the Fixing Local Roads program with a co-contribution from Cobar Shire Council of $568,500.

Work commenced on Monday with Cobar Shire estimating the road will be closed for approximately three months. (Residential and emergency access is still however permitted.)

Council understands the inconvenience this will cause, however they believe this project will enhance the Mount Grenfell Historic Site experience in the future, allowing it to be far more accessible.

Men’s Shed is a safer place

Peak Gold Mines have helped to make the Copper City Men’s Shed a much safer place with a recent donation of $1,800 which has gone towards the purchase of new PPE (personal protection equipment) for the Shed’s members. The donation has helped to purchase new earmuffs, dust masks, gloves, safety glasses and face shields for the 20 members of the shed. Men’s Shed coordinator Gordon Hill said the members very much appreciated the ongoing support they have received from the Peak over the years. Drilling re-starts at Canbelego A previously unrecognised potential of copper mineralisation at Canbelego has encouraged Helix Resources to commence diamond core drilling.

Drilling contractors commenced onsite last week carrying out Helix’s first diamond core drilling at Canbelego since 2013.

According to a recent report from Helix, additional drilling is planned to test these areas along with several other high-priority targets in a follow-up program.

Helix’s managing director Mike Rosenstreich said he was pleased to see things moving again at Canbelego.

He said the results of a recent electromagnetic survey had highlighted the Canbelego area as being a high-priority target.

Helix Resources came under new management earlier this year with the Canbelego Copper Project a joint venture with Aeris Resources Limited.

The new partnership will see the company’s exploration activities re-invigorated with the new funding being put towards a dual focus on both regional target generation work to maintain new copper opportunities as well as growing its existing copper resources.

Temperatures are below average

Temperatures over the last week have remained below average for this time of year with Thursday being our warmest day at just 24.8 degrees.

Our coolest day last week was Sunday with the mercury only reaching 21 degrees (after an overnight low of 6.3 degrees).

You may want to put an extra blanket on the bed as the cool nights are now here to stay with just five degrees the predicted overnight temperature expected tomorrow.

Six degrees is the predicted minimum for Friday and seven is the overnight forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

The days are also expected to be cooler this coming week with 20 the expected top temperature for today while 21 is the forecast for tomorrow (with the chance of a shower).

A top of 21 is also predicted for Friday and Saturday. Sunday should reach 22 while on Monday 23 degrees is the expected maximum along with a very slight chance of rain.

Lots of Cobar residents have taken up the NSW Government’s offer of a free lunch, dinner or night out and have started using their Dine & Discover vouchers.

The vouchers, two $25 vouchers that can be spent in cafes and restaurants and two $25 vouchers that can be spent on a range of entertainment, are available to every NSW resident aged 18 and over.

The vouchers have been made available by the State Government as a way of helping the hospitality industry to recover from the COVID pandemic.

NSW residents can apply online to receive their vouchers through the Service NSW app

or the Service NSW website.

Local businesses that have already signed up to the program and who are now accepting the Dine vouchers include: the Empire Hotel, Cobar Thai, Town & Country Motor Inn and Ma’s Chinese Restaurant.

Gumnut’s Café and Ange’s Café are both in the process of joining the scheme.

The Great Western Hotel management have been advised that due to their business structure, they are not eligible to participate.

Currently the Discover vouchers cannot be redeemed locally however it’s believed some local groups are working to create opportunities for them to be used in Cobar.

New $1,500 rebate for businesses Cobar’s small businesses are encouraged to sign up online for a new $1,500 rebate scheme that will help cover the cost of state and local government fees and charges.

The aim of the Small Business Fees and Charges Rebate is to support businesses to recover from the impact of COVID-19 and encourage business growth by reducing the cost of running a business.

Fees and charges that can be claimed back through the scheme include liquor licences, food authority licences, council rates, outdoor seating fees and business vehicle registration fees.

To be eligible, the applicant must be a small business, sole-trader or not-for-profit organisation, have an Australian Business Number (ABN) registered in NSW or business premises physically located and operating in

Out of this world fun

Grace Donaldson, Bella Wadley, Isabella Ghattas, Rahni Crofts, Isla and Cora McKervey were making solar systems at the Cobar Library last Friday as part of the Library’s fun school holidays activities program.

What does Anzac Day mean to you?

Colleen Boucher was the guest speaker at the Cobar Probus Club’s monthly meeting last Wednesday.

Mrs Boucher was asked to speak about what Anzac Day means to her.

She said she first learnt the meaning of Anzac Day at the age of five when she became a boarder at the Cobar War Memorial Hostel.

“The Hostel was built by the community for isolated children to board and go to school, but it was built as a memorial to those men and women who went to war to secure the freedom that our families and children are privileged to enjoy today,” Mrs Boucher said.

“The original cenotaph is the one we stand before for the dawn service today and waking up to the hymns and sound of the bugle as the sun came up over the years became a part of our lives. Every year, as school children, we would march in our whites with a red cross on our tops,” she recalled from her childhood.

Later as an adult she became a Girl Guides leader and one of her responsibilities was to teach the Guides about Anzac Day. After Guides, Mrs Boucher and her husband Chris (and their daughters) were invited to help out with the newly formed Cobar 221 Army Cadet youth organisation.

“Having no military training this was a new experience for me,” Mrs Boucher said.

“Being involved in this youth organisation brought a new meaning to Anzac Day, as training taught us the history of the army, its campaigns, conflicts and anniversaries.”

In her 30 years of involvement with Cadets, Mrs Boucher said she cannot remember ever missing an Anzac Day march.

With members of her family having served in the RAAF, including an uncle in Vietnam, and being involved with the Returned Services League and Legacy organisations, Mrs Boucher encourages others to “never forget the sacrifice that our men and women made in all wars and campaigns, and the losses that were incurred to so many families”.

Arts Council adds events to calendar

Discussion centered around a local calendar of events designed to engage people in a variety of artistic and cultural events at the Cobar Arts Councils meeting earlier this month.

Following on from two successful Colour Play workshops, there has been interest in exploring other types of art forms which has resulted in the committee deciding to now hold a card making workshop.

The workshop will be open to adults and children and be held next month prior to the Cobar Show.

Mother’s Day will be one of the themes and Cobar Show pavilion chief steward and Cobar Arts Council member, Simonne Mackay is eager to accept the resultant creations as entries for this year’s show.

Due to COVID travel restrictions, the biannual performance by visiting international pianist Roman Rudnytsky will sadly not happen this year however further events down the track include: a collage workshop; an artists exhibition and sale; a felting workshop using locally produced wool; and the big dream of a Camp Oven comedy night are all in the pipeline.

Cobar Arts council is an enthusiastic group utilising the iconic Cobar Railway Station as their home base.

The group aims to provide the community with experiences in many aspects of the creative arts.

They encourage new numbers to join them to add their skills and talents to the collective pool.—contributed

Author visits Cobar Library

Published author Kim Hodges (pictured above second from right) was in Cobar this week talking about how she came to write her three books. In addition to speaking to members of the Rotary Club of Cobar and students at Cobar High School, Kim also held a free Memoir Writing Workshop at the Cobar Library yesterday morning. Kim showed the six participants her 10 easy steps to help them write their own memoirs, gave them some writing exercises and also provided them with some constructive feedback.

Cobar Miners Race Club are in the midst of preparing for their huge Cup meeting next month and local trainer, Allan ‘Wap’ Prisk, said a big crowd will be a welcome return to normality.

Prisk explained that 2020 was very different for the Cobar club, who were one of the very few to host their non-TAB meetings during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic when racing in May and August.

“We were one of the only clubs to race last year, which was great, but with the first meeting, there was no crowd allowed, and the second meeting was the most horrible day the club had seen for the year,” Prisk said.

“We raced, but we are definitely behind financially – we had bugger all income.”

With COVID-19 restrictions now eased, country and picnic meetings of late have boasted massive crowds, and Prisk was looking forward to the prospect of racing fans flocking to the Cobar meeting.

“I have been to every meeting lately, we had a winner at Hillston the other day, and it was huge, Bourke was big too, they had a 2000-plus crowd, and everywhere we are going, we are seeing huge crowds,” Prisk said.

“It’s a great day at Cobar, and we have won the country meeting of the year twice, so obviously we put on a great day and I expect to see a big crowd.”

Prisk said attracting trainers wouldn’t be an issue, with the club putting on a meal and making sure everyone feels welcome and wanted to return to future meetings.—Jeff Hanson

• Over the past few weeks it’s been reported that our golfers are having a bit of a hard time with the course in what’s been described as “difficult conditions”. It seems that while the rain this year has been most welcome it has also brought with it all sorts of burrs, catheads and blue waxy weeds which golfers are finding hard to negotiate and contain.

• Hooray, the roof of the museum is once again red! You may have noticed in our front page photo taken of the building last week that the roof was white, which was only the undercoat. The roof is now back to its rich red colour and we think it looks great!

• Our mayor Peter Abbott and Council’s Director of Finance and Community Services, Kym Miller, have joined other mayors, deputies, council staff, State Government Ministers and Shadow Ministers in Broken Hill this week for the Western Division Conference which has a packed agenda. State Member for Barwon Roy Butler is also attending. Mr Butler said the conference aims to help the Minis-

We can report that some Telstra customers have been advised that work is currently underway to upgrade to the 5G network and that our service should be restored by the end of the week.

This year anyone attending the dawn service at the War Memorial Hostel or mid morning service in Drummond Park after the march will be required to ‘sign in’ via a QR code.

• The Cobar Weekly last week said ‘au revoir’ to one of our staff members, Karen Lennon, who has moved on to take up a position with Cobar Public School. We wish her all the best in her new role.

Countbacks needed to decide winners

Only five players were on hand last Wednesday for the Ladies Golf Par Mulligan game.

Fran Samios won the day on a countback from Glenda Peebles after both ladies finished with a +3 score.

Nearest the Pin winners on the 3rd hole were Geraldine Francisco, Susan Goonrey and Glenda Peebles.

There was a better turn out for Saturday’s game with 12 participants for the Par event.

Once again Glenda Peebles was beaten on a countback, this time by Robynne Morton after each posted scores of -3. Sally Bannister and Daphne Cross were also separated by a countback after both finished on -5 each.

da Peebles were all closest to the flag on the 7th hole.

Fran Samios collected another win for the week taking out Sunday’s stableford round with 39 points.

Karen Manns was the runner-up on 32 points with Sally Bannister in third place on the same score.

Julie Livingston finished with 30 points and was the A Grade Nearest the Pin winner on the 8th hole. Other pin winners were Brenda Fugar and Karen Manns.

A Stroke game is on today.

The Nutrien Russell Day sponsored Stableford will take place on Saturday with a barbecue to follow. A Flag event will be played on Sunday.—T’d Off

Visiting golfer has the best round Seven players took part in Saturday’s Men’s Golf Stableford competition.

The round of the weekend was produced by visitor Barry Doyle with 41 stableford points.

Back in second place was Steve Manns on 36 stableford points and third was Geoff Rorke on 33. Nearest to the Pin (NTP) prizes were won

by Doyle on the 7th hole and Rorke claimed the prize on the 8th hole.

Only six golfers turned up to take part in the second round of the Captain’s Trophy Stroke event on Sunday.

This is the last chance for golfers to get in a bit of practice before the Cobar Open the following weekend.

Plans for Cobar Yabbies 50 years reunion are going well Plans for the 50 years reunion of the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club in October are progressing very well.

Club secretary Bob Clark, who is a Life Member of the club and one of the founding members of the Yabbies, said they have had a lot of interest from ex-members.

“Yabbies from all over Australia have indicated they will be attending.

“Almost 600 swimmers have been associated with the Yabbies over the past 50 years and so far around 150 have been found and invited,” Bob said.

Among those attending will be former club presidents, secretaries and treasurers along with a number of the club’s Life Members.

Making the Yabbies Life Members list over the past 50 years were: Bob Clark who was the first to receive the honour in 1977; 1987—Phil Knuckey, Tom McIver and Harley Toomey; 1990—Roger Boyle and Peter Herrmann; 1994—Ian Settree; 2009—Bill Fugar; 2017— Murray Harland; and 2018—Scott Toomey.

Past presidents of the club include: Roger Boyle, Gordon Hogarth, John Stevenson, Neil Lethlean, Peter Herrmann, Darcy Obray, Ian Settree, Rob Wright and Bill Fugar and

John Carswell, who is the current president. and Russell Harland.

Those who have served as club secretary Chandler, Knuckey, Rowlands and Garment include: Reg Chandler, Phil Knuckey, Greg also served as Yabbies treasurers before Harley Rowlands, Frank Garment, Bob Clark, Andrew Toomey took over the position 43 years ago.

Baradine too strong The Cobar Roosters Under 18s were beaten by Baradine in their first hit out of the Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition at Baradine on Saturday.

The hosts were too strong finishing with a 38-12 win over the young Roosters.

With only three towns in the competition this year able to field Under 18s sides, it’s looking like it will be a quiet season.

Cobar Roosters president Chris Deighton, who is also the president of the Castlereagh Rugby League, said they are looking at other options to give the Under 18s more game time this season.

Roosterettes outmatched by a better Baradine outfit The Cobar Roosterettes were soundly beaten by Baradine at Baradine on Saturday in Round 2 of the Castlereagh League Tag competition.

Missing a number of key players, including their captain/coach Bianka Jacobson, the Roosterettes were also without the services of co-coach Jay Egan for Saturday’s game.

Led by their playmaker Maria Nagy, who scored three tries and kicked seven goals, the Baradine side easily accounted for the Roosterettes 42-6.

Cobar’s points came from a try by Kayla Hassan which was converted by Brianna Watson.

In the other games played in the competition on Saturday, Coonamble defeated Gilgandra 48-30 in a high scoring game and Coonabarabran accounted for Gulgong 20-6.

Dunedoo had the bye.

Cobar will take on Coonabarabran at home this Saturday in Round 3.

Tony Brown wins a cracker of a game There was plenty of bowls action over the weekend with championship games, social bowls and a triples tournament being played on the Golfie greens.

On Saturday Michael Sargent was too strong for son in-law Tagh Waugh with a convincing win in their Singles championship game while on Sunday Alan Knight and Tony Brown had an absolute cracker of a game.

Needing just one shot for victory and leading by several shots, Knight looked the goods but Brown had other plans.

Using his new “brown bowls”, Brown stuck to his mantra that “it only takes one bowl” to claw back the score to 30-all. It all came down to the last bowl which, unfortunately for Knight, managed somehow to sneak through the smallest of gaps to miss everything leaving Brown with the narrowest of wins.

A contingent of eight bowlers made the trip to Hillston for their triples championship on the weekend. (Hopefully a report will be available for next week but judging by the way they sounded on Saturday night that might be wishful thinking.)

Sunday’s social bowls game had only nine bowlers which wasn’t too bad considering the other games being played.

On rink 10 Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond, Tom ‘Papenhuyzen’ Plater and visitor Josh Quinn (playing double lead) took on Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Dean ‘Bogga’ McLeod in a topsey-turvey game that ended in a draw.

(Plater may find himself in hot water after trash talking the super coach. ‘Bogga’ was overheard saying that he probably shouldn’t bother going to training this week.)

In the main game, Randall Hall and Shane Carter were too classy for David Schofield and Barry Bargwanna to take the game and the money with a +4 win.

There were three contenders for George’s “Giraffe” award last week.

Alan Knight’s huge wrong bias and Randall Hall’s jack on the wrong rink were outdone by Plater’s bowl that barely made halfway.— Completely Unbiased

Club provides a full-on week of footy for junior players The Cobar Roosters Junior Rugby League Club held a full week of free footy clinics last week during the school holidays.

The clinics were a result of much hard work by the committee over the past eight months, driven by a desire to support as many players as possible to engage in and improve their skills in rugby league.

The group of 80 players from Under 6s to Under 16s were divided into three age groups for 3-4 hours of footy related activities each day. Local coaches also attended some of the night sessions.

Club president Genie McMullen said staff from Rugby League Academy (RLA) shared their in-depth knowledge to coach the kids and develop their footy skills.

“The players had so much fun they didn’t want to leave! It was incredible to see the level

of engagement of our U6 to U8 age group,” Genie said.

“Their strategies for bringing so much fun and enthusiasm into training drills focusing on core skills was phenomenal.”

The RLA also had two sessions with coaches to share their expertise.

In other sessions, the BlackFit Fitness staff used fun, physical activities involving Indigenous education, interwoven with traditional games, storytelling and dance to share an appreciation for the importance of Aboriginal culture with the players.

Genie said the players were engaged and thoroughly enjoyed these activities.

“Coaches also had an after-hours session with BlackFit Fitness discussing some Indigenous topics, both past and present, and enhancing the understanding of cultural issues.”

As well as the expertise of these two professional organisations, the club invited others to enhance the players’ experience across the week.

“When planning the clinic week, the committee felt it was important to showcase local talent so our members could appreciate the level of sporting talent in the Cobar community,” Genie said.

Experienced First Grader Jimmy Neyland spent two days with the players running sessions to share his kicking skills.

“Jimmy also shared stories about his footy journey with the groups, with players saying they learned a lot from hearing what Jimmy had achieved, from his early footy days as a very talented player with the Nyngan Tigers, his experiences trialing with Eels, Sharks and Knights and being selected on the Indigenous U20s team that played Great Britain,” Genie reported.

As part of the clinics, Eden Coughlan from Copper City Dance Centre, shared tips on injury prevention and recovery.

“Eden demonstrated dynamic and static stretching routines while engaging the groups in discussions on their importance, stretching some to their limit, and supporting the groups to come up with their own routines based on what they had learned through the week.

“More local talent was on show with Lisa Travis, supported by Trent Fullagar, Emma Barton and Tom Plater building on the recent success of the junior touch football competitions.

“The club also welcomed support from senior players Sione Fakahua and Loma Atuau, ‘new locals’ whose children now play for the club in the minis age group.

“Loma and Sione generously gave their time to tell the players about themselves, their heritage and their interesting journeys with footy, in development squads and lower grades at Tigers, Sharks and Manly NRL clubs.

“They encouraged the players to work hard at their sport, and led the groups through skills sessions,” Genie said.

New netball competition off to a flying start Warm weather and a slight breeze greeted the netball players at Ward Oval on Saturday afternoon for the opening round of the 2021 Cobar Senior Netball competition.

In A Grade, the Divas 2021 season got off to a shaky start when they only had five players available at the commencement of their match with Hot Shots.

Hot Shots made the most of the player over-

lap and, by the end of the first quarter, they had taken a 14-11 lead.

Hot Shots extended their lead to be nine goals the difference at half time before Divas late starter, Demi Smith, entered the game.

Smith definitely made the difference and her strong defence and ability to read play helped to turn the game around for the Divas.

At the end of the third quarter, the score was

tied at 40-all and with Lauren Urquhart’s accurate shooting in the final quarter, Divas finished with a 53-49 win.

Best on court for Divas was Rachel Simon, who displayed plenty of versatility playing in the Centre court and also in defence positions throughout the match.

Hot Shots were well-served by their shooters Alanna de Vries and Cairo Haronga who teamed up well in the circle.

In the other Round 1 scheduled A Grade game, JKM forfeited to Pumpettes.

In B Grade, Real Steel finished with a 34-7 win over Golfie Mystics while Sharpe Shooters got the better of Gumnuts winning their game 34-21.

While the final margin in the Real Steel/ Golfie Mystics game was substantial, it was however a well contested match all up and down the court.

The Mystics however failed to convert all their shooting opportunities which eventually cost them the match.

Real Steel were well-served by their shooter, Amazon Gladwin while Mystics’ best on court was Elodie Manns.

Both players shared in the game’s Best and Fairest and Sportsmanship points.

Sharpe Shooters and Gumnuts started their match on an even keel with the Shooters narrowly ahead 4-3 at the first break.

They had extended their lead to four goals by half time and it was six points the difference at the end of the third quarter.

Sharpe Shooters then finished strongly to eventually claim a 13 point win, 34-21.

Sharpe Shooters were well served by Carli Crook and Olivia Deighton while Cheryl Lewington was best on court for Gumnuts.

In Round 2 matches this Saturday, JKM Dynamic Fitness will meet DIVAS and Pumpettes will take on Hot Shots in A Grade.

In B Grade, Golfie Mystics and Sharpe Shooters will go head-to-head while Real Steel Divas’ Demi Smith and Rachel Simon defending Hot Shots’ shooter Cairo Haronga in will be looking for back-to-back wins when Cobar Netball Association’s A Grade game on Saturday. they take on Gumnuts.
