Cobar put on its Sunday best to welcome locals and visitors to the Sundi Sundi Markets in Drummond Park on Sunday. Targeted at the thousands of visitors travelling through to the Mundi Mundi Bash music festival near Broken Hill, Cobar Shire Council hosted the Sundi Sundi Markets to entertain and entice visitors to stay and shop in town, and they did, with stallholders reporting a roaring trade. The Cobar Post Office building was constructed in 1885, with a residence added in 1892, alterations to the front façade were carried out in 1899 and more extensions and alterations to the front façade and original postal room were completed in 1909.

The brown brick Telecom Exchange of more recent origin is located to the west of the building. This early photo is from the Great Cobar Museum’s collection from about the early 1900s. The Post Office celebrated 140 years of service last week.

Mount Hope Mining released their Maiden Drill Program and Development Strategy on Monday which outlines their plans for the Mt Solitary Gold Project and other greenfield targets.

Managing Director and CEO Fergus Kiley said it was an exciting time for the Mount Hope Mine Project located 148km south of Cobar.

“In just a few short days, drills will be turning as we seek to test multiple highpotential prospects,” Mr Kiley said.

He said the company’s main focus will be to expedite the development of the Mt Solitary deposit for early cash flow.

Mr Kiley said they are advancing toward a JORC (Joint Ore Reserves Committee) resource at Mt Solitary with significant gold intercepts already defined.

Drilling programs are also scheduled for this month at the company’s three new greenfield targets.

A 1,200m RC drilling program will be conducted at Black Hill, located 1.7km south of the historic Mt Hope Copper Mine, the company will be testing extensions at Mt Hope East (1km east of the mine), and also be drilling a strong electromagnetic target at Blue Heeler (1km south).

“Our strategy is simple but powerful: unlock value through systematic exploration while positioning Mt Solitary for early-stage gold development and toll treatment opportunities,” Mr Kiley said.

It was added to the Australian Commonwealth Heritage List in 2012, marking its importance in the region’s history.

The region’s postal history dates back to 1873 when a petition to the Postmaster General led to the establishment of a weekly mail service between Bourke and the Great Cobar Mine.

The first Postmaster, Charles Claxton, managed the service from a store at the Great Cobar Mine.

By 1885, the Cobar Post Office was built to meet the evolving postal and telecommunications needs of the town.

Over the years, the building underwent several key expansions, including the addition of a residence in 1892 and further alterations through to 1909.

The Cobar Post Office remains an important landmark in the community, with its distinctive red face brick exterior, white mouldings, and Italianate-style arched entryway.

It’s become a symbol of Cobar’s rich history and continues to serve locals with both traditional and digital services.

An RFS warning

Before lighting hazard reductions and pile burns, residents and landholders are reminded they need to alert fire agencies.

The easiest way to do that is through the Rural Fire Service (RFS) online portal (www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify) which gives residents the ability to notify fire services quickly and easily when they are planning to use fire on their property.

Using their mobile phone, tablet or computer, residents and landholders can lodge their notification of a planned hazard reduction or burn off 24 hours a day, seven days a week via the RFS portal.

RFS Inspector David Hagarty said by notifying their neighbours and using the online tool, users can help prevent unnecessary emergency calls.

“Over coming months many landholders may take the opportunity to burn off – but they are responsible for ensuring it is done safely and let us, and their neighbours know,” Inspector Hagarty said.

It’s been pretty average weather Apart from a couple of days, temperatures over the past week have been pretty close to the long term average of 18.2 degrees for this time of the year.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, last Wednesday’s top daytime temperature was 18.4 and Thursday recorded 18.8.

After a cool start of 5.2 degrees on Friday, it turned out to be our warmest day of the week when it reached 20.1 degrees.

It then however started to cool off as we headed into the weekend with 15.5 the maximum recorded by the Bureau on Saturday.

It got down to a very chilly low of 0.9 degrees on Sunday morning (which is well below the minimum average of 6.2 degrees for this time of the year). The mercury climbed to a daytime high of 16.7 degrees.

Monday was cloudy with a maximum of 15.4 degrees.

There was no rain recorded by the Bureau during the past week.

At the time of going to print yesterday, the temperature had reached 17.9 degrees.

Today we’re headed for a top of 15, along with a possible shower or two.

Tomorrow will be cloudy with a predicted high of 17.

The Bureau predicts it will warm up on Friday, and should reach 20 degrees.

The weekend ahead is looking good with temperatures expected to peak at 21 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday and continue on into Monday, which also has a forecasted high of 21 degrees.

Cobar High School Ag students Alora Deppeler, Chloe Williams, Halle Snudden, Rhys Cull and Tom Francisco (with staff member Matt Harland) joined over 600 other students from 76 schools across NSW at the 2025 NSW School Merino Wether Challenge in Dubbo last week. The challenge is an initiative designed to give students a practical, hands-on learning experience. Students received six wethers in March and have cared for them at the school for the past six months. The competition culminated in a two-day final judging of their wool, weight, fat/muscle ratio, and carcase last week. Hard at work in the trenches

The Cobar Cadet Unit 221 members were hard at work in the trenches (or traps) over the weekend volunteering at the Cobar Clay Target Club’s Golden Clay shoot. The group of 14 cadets and their leader, Captain AAC Colleen Boucher OAM, worked Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday monitoring and loading the clay traps (and cleaning up the spent clays) to ensure the event ran smoothly. Captain Boucher said community engagement is a core unit of a cadet’s training and the event provided cadets with valuable practical experience in safely, discipline and leadership.

As part of this year’s Western Landcare NSW’s Life and Light Photography Competition, organisers are offering photography and nature workshops.

The hands-on workshops are to be held at the Newey Reserve (starting early to capture the best light) and will cover camera and phone photography basics, and give tips on composition and techniques.

The workshops will also include some nature education to enhance your storytelling and help develop an appreciation of local native plants and wildlife.

The workshops are suitable for amateur to semi-professional photographers who shoot with Digital SLR, mirrorless cameras (preferred) or a mobile phone.

Two sessions are available, one for youth (under 16 years) and an adult session.

The workshops are free for the first 10 people who book.

Western Landcare’s Life and Light Photography Competition, opened on July 1 and closes next month.

This year’s theme, “Through Our Eyes – Life, Land & Light in Western NSW,” invites photographers to capture the essence of life in the western district—its people, landscapes, and the unique way we live.

Cobar celebrates 300th Parkrun

Cobar Parkrun celebrated a big milestone (with cake) on Saturday holding its 300th event which welcomed a group of 16 locals and visitors to walk, jog or run 5km around the Newey Reserve. Wellington visitor, Leon Richardson, set a cracking time of 17 minutes, 31 seconds (just outside Rabi Phuyal’s record time of 17.18). Cobar Parkrun is one of 526 Parkrun events held around Australia every Saturday morning, and one of over 2,000 Parkrun events held globally. Cobar’s first Parkrun event, organised by former local Tanya Gilbert, kicked off in May 2018 with 58 runners and 11 volunteers, with the aim of getting people out and enjoying exercising.

Calling all local Lego legends

For almost 70 years children have been building anything their imagination allowed with plastic Lego bricks.

Kids used to build castles, race cars, pirate ships, aeroplanes, animals, cities, farms, furniture, a hospital, a fire stations, a zoo, a jungle, space ships and more.

And while originally it was only the domain for children, adults are now also into building things with Lego.

Cobar Shire Librarian Jane Siermans, who is a Lego lover herself, said apart from the Cobar Show, kids and adults don’t have much opportunity to create and compete in Lego competitions and so decided to start one.

Last year’s Library Lego Legends Competition, which attracted more than 200 entries from builders aged four years and up, was a huge success and the competition is running again this year.

“We have obtained sponsorship from Aurelia Metals and will be awarding $200 Cobar Quids to the winners,” Jane said.

“The entries will again be judged by public voting all through the month of September and I look forward to seeing some amazing builds.

“Kits and/or original builds are welcome, but they need to be securely fastened to a Lego base plate (or be self-supporting on wheels),” Jane said.

There were some one sided games played in the Cobar Junior Soccer Club’s competition on Saturday morning at Ward Oval.

In their Mids match, Black Knights beat Polar Bears 5-nil with Niklaus Flack-Hogan Black Knights’ the top scorer with two goals.

Bengal Tigers also finished with a 5-nil win over Redbacks in their Mids game with Riley Williams netting two goals for Bengal Tigers.

In the Minis division, Purple Wanderers ran riot to beat Cornish Dragons 6-nil with Nate Sullivan booting in three goals to help the Wanderers to the win.

The other two Minis games finished in draws.

Pitch Pirates and Orange Rovers were locked up on the final whistle at 5-all while the match between Sky Strikers and Raging Rhinos finished at nil-all.

Ali Taylor landed five goals for Pitch Pirates and Alfie Hill was Orange Rovers’ top scorer with three goals.

It was a different story in the Opens division game, with Rock Apes only just beating Mill Rats 9-8 to claim the win.

Mill Rats’ Ayush Yonzon, with four goals, was the leading goal scorer of the match followed by Marley Jones who goaled three times for Rock Apes to help them to the win.

In the Seniors game, Rangers beat Spurs 9-7 with Judd Josephson’s boot helping his Rangers team to a win after he kicked five goals.

Mark McBride’s three goals earned him the top scorer title for his Spurs team.

West Wyalong shooter wins the 48th Annual Golden Clay

The first event on Sunday morning was a 30 Target Single Barrel Championship.

O’Neill continued his good form to finish second in A Grade with 28/30, Jarrod Barraclough shot 26/30 for second place in B Grade and Griffiths won C Grade with a score of 26/30.

The 30 Target Empire Hotel Cobar Mafeesh Handicap, in memory of Frosty Singleton who was instrumental in commencement of Clay Target Shooting on Mafeesh Station in Cobar, carries a reward of the Mafeesh Cup, along with prizemoney for first to 5th placings.

Additional enthusiasm is generated throughout the weekend with a Calcutta, being held in conjunction with this event.

Four competitors shot a possible score of 30/30 and six shooters recorded 29/30 and so it went to two nail-biting shoot-offs to get the final placements.

Joe Doidge from Pooncaire, with 42/42, finished as the winner with Reece Whipps second, local Aiden Barraclough was third, Glen Viney was 4th and another Cobar shooter, Matt Harland, claimed 5th place with 49/50.

The final event of the weekend was the 15 Pair Double Rise Championship which is a favourite among shooters.

Kyriakos Kassianou, was the Junior Masters Champion of Champions, with a score of 163/175, dropping only 13 points over the three events.

Tweet is in hot form, having just returned from the Outback Challenge in Queensland where he honed his putting skills.

With plenty of pressure in defence and multiple intercepts throughout the mid court, Divas provided very limited opportunities for Smash Ups’ shooters Emma Harley (GA) and Mollie McAndrew (GS) to score and, it wasn’t until eight minutes into the game, that they were able to record their first points.

Divas’ tactics to disrupt and interrupt Smash Ups’ normal style of play continued to bother Smash Ups throughout the first three quarters of the game.

Smash Ups, with plenty of subs on the bench, tried different attacking combinations and it wasn’t until the final quarter that they started to play themselves back into the match.

Peta Woods took over the lead shooting role in the second half for Smash Ups and her strong rebounding and more aggressive style of play, gave them more opportunities at goal.

Playing their own game, Smash Ups then started to match Divas all up and down the The Divas played a near faultless game to win the 2025 Senior Netball grand final court, however by that stage, the deficit was beating Smash Ups 54-22 on Friday night at the Ward Oval courts. too large to rein in.

Green was at the top of his game The Cobar Amateur Pistol Club hosted a 25m Centre Fire Sports event on Sunday with a field of eight turning out for some competitive shooting.

Adam Green shot 531 off pistol and, with his handicap of 68, finished with a total score of 599.

The other scores recorded were: Michael Garbutt 530-62-592; Geoff Passfield 408-178 -586; Robert Neate 517-48-565; Brad Harrison 382-176-558; John Woloczij 396-123519; Joe Sime 373-145-518 and Todd Manns 372-141-513.

Cobar Clay Target Club’s 48th Annual Golden Clay & NSW Junior Masters Championship and Night Points Score Championship on the weekend. He collected the Overall Highgun Golden Clay Trophy, sponsored by Aurelia Metals/Peak Gold Mines, which was once again a 9ct solid gold miniature clay, and $1,000 prizemoney.

The 48th annual event attracted a great crowd, and it’s plain to see that Cobar club is renowned for its hospitality.

The weekend carnival commenced on Friday night with the Night Points Score Championship, a 30 Target event, which was contested in excellent conditions.

A record 110 shooters took part with some local shooters being successful in their grades.

Jarrod Barraclough was in fine form with 84/90 to place first in B Grade and Arthur Turner won the Overall Night Points Score title with 147/147.

Clear skies, sunny and windy weather provided some challenging shooting conditions for the group of 151 shooters who competed in Saturday and Sunday’s Golden Clay & NSW Junior Masters programmes.

The first event for Saturday was a 30 Target Points Score Championship, with Cobar Clay Target Club shooters featuring including James O’Neill taking out second place in A Grade with 91/96 and Jarrod Barraclough was first in B Grade with 87/90.

In the 45 Target Medley event, Todd Yates shot 70/75 for 2nd place in B Grade, and Will Griffiths had 60/75 to win C Grade.

In the 30 Target Double Barrel Championship, from the Cobar shooters, O’Neill was second in A Grade with 31/32, Tony Polack finished second in B Grade with 37/39 and Lachlan Mahaffey (representing major sponsor Aurelia Metals/Peak Gold Mines) and Griffiths shot 28/31 for second in C Grade.
