State Government regulatory approval for Aurelia Metals to develop the New Cobar Complex is estimated to bring significant economic benefits to the region.

Approval for the State Significant Development project was announced earlier this month and is expected to extend the life of mine to 2035.

The New Cobar Complex project will amalgamate the existing approved underground mining of the Chesney and Jubilee deposits, and the development of new underground workings at the Great Cobar and Gladstone deposits.

Aurelia estimates the project will sustain 400-plus jobs at the Peak operations and create an additional 140 jobs during the construction phase.

The company’s Great Cobar Pre-Feasibility Study released in January, supports the development of a new satellite mine based on initial mining at Great Cobar with a maiden 840,000 tonne Ore Reserve to offset mining depletion at Peak.

Aurelia Metals CEO and managing director Dan Clifford said it was a critical milestone in their strategy to optimize their assets through extending the mine life as well as positioning the company to be “copper ready” a commodity that is expected to be the foundation in a global shift towards a decarbonized society.

Mr Clifford said bringing a new copper deposit into production in just two years, will bring significant benefits to the Cobar community.

Museum re-design wins three awards The re-design project of the great Cobar Museum and Visitor Information Centre has earned three accolades at the National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards.

The project took out the top prize at the awards ceremony on Friday at Doltone House in Sydney, earning the Judges Choice Award for Dunn & Hillam Architects and Cobar Shire Council.

The Great Cobar Museum and Visitor Information Centre make-over also won the Conservation-Built Heritage Award and was Highly Commended in the Conservation—Interiors and Objects category, with the judges commenting it was “an incredible regional project that has completely revived the significant heritage building”.

Dunn & Hillam architect and director Ashley Dunn said that the project presented some significant challenges for the architectural team, which is based in Sydney and specialises in civic, heritage and community buildings for clients in cities and regional towns.

“We spend a lot of time carefully looking and documenting the condition of the heritage buildings we work with,” Mr Dunn said.

“That means we can understand the first priorities in terms of conservation.”

Cobar Museum curator Kay Stingemore said the new floorplan has given them more space and makes for a more coherent flow through the exhibitions.

“The design has completely changed the way we think about our museum, by restoring the beautiful building and allowing it to be properly seen and appreciated for the first time in decades,” Mrs Stingemore said.

Travelling as the crow flies

Travelling with this year’s Variety Bash, which overnighted in Cobar on Monday, are The Black Crows (David Brown from Valentine and Toney Pearce from Redhead) in their 1973 Rover 3500. The pair are old hands on the Bash as it’s David’s 11th year and Tony’s 10th trip. By means of “graft, corruption and bribery” the boys had secured pole position when the Bash headed off yesterday morning from Tom Knight Memorial Oval. The pair travel “as the crow flies” which should be hard for the 300 other participants to catch them. Before they left, the Variety Club made a $2,500 donation to the Cobar Camels Rugby Union Club for equipment and also donated a coffee machine to Cobar Junior Rugby League.

What do residents and ratepayers want for Cobar Shire?

Cobar Shire Council is currently holding a series of community consultations to find out what Cobar Shire residents consider to be the priorities for their community.

Council hosted two sessions last week, one on Friday morning at the Council Chambers and a second on Saturday morning in Drummond Park.

Three more sessions will be held next week in Cobar, Euabalong and Nymagee.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko led the sessions and stressed at each meeting that “the Community Strategic Plan is not a council plan, but rather a plan that belongs to all Cobar Shire residents and ratepayers”.

“It is up to all of us to achieve the outcomes we are seeking,” Mr Vlatko said.

“At the same time, Cobar Shire Council has a significant responsibility to achieve many of the strategies that are outlined in the plan.”

He said the community, other levels of government and the business sector also have responsibilities in ensuring the plan succeeds.

The Community Strategic Plan takes into account various community strategies and looks at how they affect a variety of demographics.

It sets a plan for support and inclusion for all Cobar Shire councillors, general manager Peter Vlatko and local residents at council’s and looks at how families can be encouraged to second Community Strategic Plan community consultation session at Drummond Park on relocate to Cobar and stay in Cobar.

One Iron Ringer is offended by memorial Dear editor, According to the Macquarie Dictionary, the definition of an Iron Ringer is a person born in Cobar: So-and-so is an iron ringer.

An iron ringer is in the iron ring which can never be broken.

Like many other Iron Ringers, I have the privilege of Iron Ringer bestowed upon me due to the fact I was born in Cobar. I am fiercely protective of the term Iron Ringer.

During my tenure at The New Occidental Hotel many debates were conducted surrounding the status of Cobar residency. The categories were Iron Ringer, Local or Blow In. It is as the Iron Ring Committee respects the fact the “unique term Iron Ringer can only be bestowed on someone born in Cobar”.

I whole heartedly agree with a testament of some description explaining this unique status.

However I find the terminology of a monu-

ment idea reminds me of Remembrance, Memorial and of people who have passed away.

I can assure you there are still many Iron Ringers alive and well.

May I suggest a more suitable representation would be a piece of symbolic art with an inscription advising visitors to Cobar of the historical significance of the Iron Ringer.

I have reservations on the formation of an Iron Ringer Club which would welcome people who were not born in Cobar but have lived here for many years or who had made significant contributions to the town as Members of the Iron Ring.

I feel the idea of Honorary Members is diluting the right to be acquired and qualify as an Iron Ringer.

Could this be the first sign of the Iron Ring being eroded?

NSW Government funds surveys The NSW Government is working closely with Geoscience Australia to undertake an airborne gravity survey in the Cobar Basin as well as a seismic survey between Cobar and Ivanhoe.

Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for Resources Paul Toole said four surveys will be carried out across NSW, using a mix of cutting-edge technologies to help uncover critical minerals buried deep underground.

Mr Toole said the new surveys are the NSW Government’s biggest program of geophysical data acquisition in the state’s history.

“We know that NSW is rich in critical minerals such as cobalt and zirconium and with

the help of some of the world’s most advanced geophysical technology, it is possible to locate more of these highly sought after minerals,” Mr Toole said.

“These new surveys will ultimately boost our knowledge of resource potential across a greater area of the state, and that means we can provide more quality data to industry to spur on new exploration and investment.”

“Exploration programs today may lead to a critical minerals project in five to 10 years that employs locals and plays a vital role in the manufacturing supply chain for products such as batteries, electric vehicles, and renewables.

“It is an exciting time for mining in NSW.”

Fox puts himself forward as an alternative to major parties News

Husband, father of three, chef, teacher and now a Federal Election candidate, Benjamin Fox has nominated to contest the Seat of Parkes with the aim of giving people an option to the major parties.

Mr Fox has joined the Informed Medical Options Party (IMOP) which advocates for the end of vaccine mandates and medical discrimination.

After growing up in Parkes, Mr Fox is now based in Dubbo.

He said he decided to run for parliament when he was “personally effected by the extreme overreach of our government and the Department of Education”.

After 11 years of teaching, his career came to an abrupt end when he decided not to attest to his vaccination status.

“I discussed it with other affected people and thought ‘why not throw my hat in the ring’,” Mr Fox said.

He was endorsed as the IMOP candidate for Parkes in mid November 2021 and said it has been “a big long bumpy ride” since.

“It’s a massive area and I don’t have a huge team but the party has contested other elections - mainly in NSW and Queensland - so this is not our first gig.”

Mr Fox is also a passionate advocate for mental health and would like to be a voice for people struggling with mental health issues and offering support for their carers.

A passionate teacher, who is committed to providing students with opportunities to unleash their passions, Mr Fox believes there should be more opportunities for self-directed student learning.

He said instead of being restricted by what’s “on offer” at the school they attend, students should be presented with opportunities that align with their passions and knowledge set.

Mr Fox wants to see an end to medical discrimination across education, the broader community and society as a whole.

The IMOP was formed in 2016, in response to Morrison Government’s ‘no jab, no pay’ policy of the time and continues to work so that the people of Australia will have an option other than the major parties.

Farmers take part in drone training and mapping workshops Over the past 12 months, Western Local Land Services (Western LLS) has been testing drones to see if they can be successfully used to monitor pastures across the western region.

The results of their testing will be compiled to work out if the technology is practical, useful and accurate in a number of applications, including: measuring groundcover, species diversity and distances from the air.

Local landholders had the opportunity to learn more about the technology and the program last Tuesday at a workshop held at Dijoe Station between Cobar and Bourke.

The workshop was very successful with the 12 attendees shown how they could map their properties to collect information.

The practical hands-on drone training covered the basics of using and operating a drone and demonstrated how drones can be used to collect farm data so that landholders can make informed decisions on their properties.

Participants were also guided in using software to process the data they collected.

The workshops outlined how drones can be used for other applications such as moving and monitoring livestock, pest management, checking on animal health and wellbeing and monitoring of vegetation and water.

As part of the program, participants will receive access to the drone mapping software (which is fully subsidised by Western LLS) which they can now use to collect maps and data of their own properties that can be a useful decision making tool for them in future.

The data collected will be vital in the development of effective and practical drone technology for applications in Western NSW. All attendees left feeling more confident in

using drones and excited to see how they could use them on their properties.

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders said technology continues to revolutionise how farmers operate, and courses like this are an opportunity for people to upskill using the latest technological ad-

vancements.

“The agriculture sector is stronger than ever, despite a challenging few years of fires, floods and drought. It’s important that we continue to roll out programs like these so our farmers can strengthen and grow their operations during this prosperous time,” Mr Saunders said.

Council’s plan to beautify the town

Cobar Swimming Pool Design and Viability Report on public display for community feedback Cobar Shire Council is currently working with Facility Design Group to create a Masterplan and Business Case for the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool. This project has been proudly funded by the New South Wales State Government.

Council and Facility Design Group undertook a series of community consultation sessions in February 2022 in order to support the preparation of the Business Case and Masterplan.

Cobar Shire Council has received the Design and Viability Report in response to the project brief and in consideration of the community consultation sessions.

Two concept options have been prepared for consideration.

1. The first option addresses the core issues with the entry, kiosk, amenities, and staff facilities.

2. The second option is a potential stage 2 which could include the addition of an indoor multipurpose pool to replace the current program pool.

Council advises the community that its preferred option is option 1 for consideration.

The Design and Viability report is on public display and available for community feedback. The report and plans can be accessed via Council’s website www.cobar.nsw.gov.au/council/have-your-say or from Council Administration Office at 36 Linsley Street.

Cobar Shire Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko has pushed for a ‘Town Beautification Plan’ to make Cobar more attractive for residents and visitors.

Mr Vlatko said as part of ‘Greening Cobar’, council has on occasion had to remove trees for various reasons.

He said for example, if a tree’s root systems becomes invasive to the infrastructure, such as roots growing into the water supply, or when they become hazardous (like a gum tree in Drummond Park that dropped a limb last week near the skate park), they then are removed.

“Council has an objective that for every tree that is removed it is replaced with more (in suitable locations),” he said.

Council’s Parks and Gardens team has recently been planting trees along Mopone Street, where 30 new native gums are now located, and also in the Jandra Crescent Reserve, where 20 Crepe Myrtles have been planted.

“Council is also actively applying for funding opportunities to not only beautify the town, but also to plant more trees,” he said.

Town beautification is part of council’s Community Strategic Plan and council welcomes comments from residents and ratepayers about what more can be done to beautify our town.

Rain recorded

The rain predicted last week by the Bureau of Meteorology did arrive with a total of 50.4mm received for the week.

The Bureau recorded 17.2mm up to 9am last Wednesday in their rain gauge followed by the biggest dump of the week, 30.2mm, recorded on Thursday morning.

Another 2.2mm was in the gauge on Saturday morning and a drizzly day on Sunday resulted in 0.6mm being recorded up to 9am on Monday.

Bob Sinclair once again had cause to brag about his rainfall tally at Berangabah in the south of the shire after they received 53mm last week.

Bob joked that he reckons it’s “time to plant banana plants” after they’ve had close to 380mm this year.

While Cobar is expecting cloudy weather for the rest of this week, there is however not much chance of more rain.

The Bureau is predicting we could have a possible shower on Monday.

The week ahead will continue to be mild coupled with cool nights.

Today’s expected top temperature is 18 degrees after seven overnight; 17 is the forecast for tomorrow (with six overnight) and 19 is the predicted top for Friday with seven the expected overnight low.

The weekend will however be warmer with 21 the expected top temperature on both Saturday and Sunday.

The nights will also be warmer with the Bureau forecasting it should only drop to 10 degrees overnight on Saturday while nine is the minimum expected on Sunday.

Temperatures on Monday will range from 10-21 degrees.

Casey has an impressive mining career, always encouraging and supporting her fellow female miners to pursue nontraditional roles. Starting as an underground truck operator, Casey is the first-ever female Underground Bogger Operator at Alkane Resources’ Tomingley operation. Award winners will be announced in Sydney next month.

CSA Mine is looking for experienced operators to join the new team operating the Paste Plant. These positions offer new opportunities and increased exposure across operating in the ore processing department. This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic mining operation that recognises achievement and offers genuine career opportunities. This role may suit a tradesperson, trade assistant or operator with demonstrated mechanical aptitude and a dedication to working safely and continuous improvement.

Operate sections of the processing plant whilst continuously improving working practices • Operate the paste backfill plant and associated filtration system • Monitor, maintain and check equipment and materials • Achievement of daily production targets • General housekeeping and operational process activities • Additional tasks as required by the supervisor

Current Australian Driver’s Licence (minimum P2 or equivalent) • Previous ore processing or paste plant/backfill experience will be highly regarded but not essential • Loader, forklift, working at heights, and confined space are also desirable but not essential • Demonstrated dedication to safe work practices

ADMINISTRATION COORDINATOR The Administration Coordinator will provide high quality, professional, and efficient support as well as exceptional customer service for and on behalf of Council's engineering department.

Reporting to the Director Engineering Services, this role is essentially the 'office manager' for the department and will support the Director to ensure the successful overall performance of the department. With a strong focus on executive level administrative support, this role will be highly organised, customer focused, and continually looking for ways to improve business systems and processes.

The salary for this full-time position commences at $74,000 ($40.92/hr) plus superannuation, with employment terms and conditions in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award, working a nine-day fortnight, 35 hours per week.

Cobar junior Roosters celebrate four wins for the day The Cobar junior Roosters finished with four wins for the day in the 2022 Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League competition on Saturday.

Six Cobar sides travelled to Dubbo on Saturday with the Under 10s, Under 11s, Under 12s and Under 16s sides all coming out on top in their Round 3 games.

The Roosters Under 10s played a thriller of

a match to narrowly beat St Johns Maroon 30-28. Tries for Cobar were scored by Isabelle Gilette, Tommy George, Austin Kane and Judd Josephson (2) with goals landed by Billy Watt, Eligh Ritter, Tommy George, Lucas Townsend and Austin Kane.

The Players’ Player was London Hyland and the Coaches Award went to Judd Josephson.

The Roosters Under 11s finished well out in

front in their match with South Dubbo with 34-12 the final margin.

Jawayne Dodds (2), Temiloluwa Adesina, Jaxon Waugh and George McDonald (2) were the try scorers with goals kicked by Mason King, Talas Burke, Temiloluwa Adesina, George McDonald and Rhylee Jeffery.

Golfers call for ban on rain dances It’s been announced that rain dances have now been banned as golfers were not permitted on the course last week due to the sodden conditions from continuous rain.

Dancers will be advised when needed next as extra dry conditions in the future will no doubt warrant their services.

The Wanaaring Open was another casualty of the wet weather, with another date to host the event yet to be determined.

If by chance the sun decides to shine this week, a Par game will take place in the ladies Golf competition today.

The inaugural Cobar Miners Race Club Best Ball Stableford Three Person Ambrose event is scheduled for Saturday and teams may consist of all men, all women or mixed players.

Bowlers not put Minis know how to score soccer goals off by wet greens A field of 26 avid bowlers made for six games of bowls at the Golfie on Sunday.

The big winners for the day were the doubles team of Alan Knight and Marlene Wynd who finished with a score of +13 against Greg Read and Daryl Jermyn.

Knight’s precision bowling was simply outstanding which aided his side’s win.

A high scoring game was played out in Cobar Junior Soccer’s Minis division on Saturday at Ward Oval with Rovers defeating Wanderers 7-5.

Rovers’ goals were scored by Ford Ellison, Levi Mackay and Nash Cartner.

Levi earned the Gumnut Milkshake Award while Nash took home the Cobar Hotbake Donut Award.

Ethan Jebb and Lenny Hill scored Wanderers’ goals with Lenny earning the Gumnut Milkshake Award and Ethan took home the Cobar Hotbake Donut Award.

Liverpool and Rangers played out a close 2-1 game with Maddox Best’s two goals helping his Liverpool side to the win.

Ashton Hyland scored Rangers’ goal and collected the Gumnut Milkshake Award with Levi Prince collecting the other Gumnut Milkshake Award.

Joe Arnold and Oliver Tranter earned the Cobar Hotbake Donut Award for their efforts.

In the game between United and Chelsea, United finished out on top as 4-1 winners.

Logan McKenzie, Sam McKervey and Jack Lowe were the game’s goal scorers.

Jackson Campbell and Jack Lowe scored the Gumnut Milkshake Awards while Bailey Robinson and Grace Cavalot won the Cobar Hotbake Donut Awards.

In the Mids division, Rovers beat United 5-0, with Rovers goals scored by Henry Geppert, Zara Patterson, Tom Presig (2) and Charlie Nicholson.

Tom Presig and Edwin Palma took home the Gumnut Milkshake Awards while Henry Geppert and Braydee Claus won the Cobar Hotbake Milkshake Awards.

In the other Mids game Rangers defeated Liverpool 4-2.

Logan Fennamore (3) and Jeremiah McMillan scored goals for Rangers while Isla McKervey and Cooper Trudgett netted Liverpool’s two goals.

Indie Burke and Cooper Trudgett received the Gumnut Milkshake prizes while Max Ellison and Bailey Neale earned the Cobar Hotbake Donut Awards for their efforts.

In the seniors game Rangers had it all over Spurs to finish with a 7-4 win.

The Empire Pirates, Golfie Gophers and the Golfie Dartaholics all recorded wins in last Wednesday’s darts competition.

Empire Pirates won their match 6-5 over Empire Barflies; Golfie Gophers also finished with a 6-5 victory over RSL and Golfie Dartaholics won on a forfeit from Western Outlaws.

Hundreds and high scores were thrown by: Empire Pirates—JR Templeton 100, 100 and Jason Holmgreen 100, 100; Empire Barflies— Craig Youd 100; Golfie Gophers—Chris Hooker 100, 100 and Les Hooker 123; RSL— Maurice Bell 100 and Kyle Roberts 100.

Cobar netballers head to Newcastle Two heavyweights go head-to-head Cobar Netball Association (CNA) and Newcastle Netball Association (NNA) are joining forces to offer more experiences for their younger players through a Sister City Netball Program.

Established in 2021 but postponed until this year due to COVID, CNA President Bethany Thomas said the program’s aim is to promote personal growth in young players.

Mrs Thomas said she’s looking forward to Cobar players being involved with a much larger association.

“To get this kind of exposure to a big competition with so many skill levels is just not something we can offer in our small town with a relatively small volunteer base,” Mrs Thomas said.

Newcastle will host first with Cobar players heading east to the coast at the end of the month.

As well as participating in a skills clinic, CNA members will be joining in the Newcastle club’s Saturday competition playing against a variety of local teams.

The weekend visit concludes with a netball carnival.

NNA president Cheryl Hernando has a close connection to Cobar through her daughter Alex Brown.

Mrs Hernando has also supported Cobar senior representative teams in the past at State carnivals, and is keen to show young Cobar players what playing netball in a big centre is all about.

“Already having one of our own Novocastrians embedded in the Cobar netball community, we saw an opportunity to reach out and see how we could create something a little different,” Mrs Hernando said.

Making the trip to the coast to represent CNA are four teams made up of 43 players (male and female) aged between 10 and 18 years.

With them will be a team of 12 coaches, managers, umpires, and helpers who will also have the opportunity to improve their skills and gain experience over the weekend.

Mrs Thomas said with over $10,000 in sponsorship and community fundraising, the costs for all participants involved has been drastically reduced to maximise their access and participation in this tour.

All washed out

All competition games in the Men’s Golf competition were washed out last week.

This Saturday the Cobar Miners Race Club will be sponsoring a Three Person Best Ball Stableford.

Sunday’s event is the annual Di McLeod Memorial Fun Day. Due to the lack of numbers in the lady golfers competition, the men may team up with another male golfer after all the ladies have a partner for the day.

The two heavyweights of the Cobar Senior Ladies Netball competition, Divas and Pumpettes, went head-to-head last Tuesday night with Divas running away with the Round 3 match 45-26.

Pumpettes had the better start to the game and led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Divas then found their feet in the second quarter and piled on the points to have a six points lead at half time.

Divas continued to out-point Pumpettes throughout the second half and went on to finish with an easy 19 point victory.

Best on court for Divas were Marybeth Lowe and Jade Dillon with Neve Carter Pumpettes’ best player. Lowe and Carter also earned the match’s Sportsmanship points.

JKM Dynamic Fitness and Gumnuts played out the closest match of the round with JKM finishing as narrow two point winners, 33-31.

The match was tight throughout.

Gumnuts had a one point advantage at the first break (9-8) and they were still one goal ahead (18-17) going into the halftime break.

By the third quarter, the one point margin had not changed however it was now JKM who were out in front, 24-23.

JKM held on to the reins for the rest of the game to finish with the two point win.

Best and Fairest points were shared by Maggie Watt (Gumnuts), Lauren Lamond (JKM) and Katrina Francisco (Gumnuts).

Watt and Lexie Traynor earned the match’s Sportsmanship points.

In the other game, Real Steel came up against Ay-Jays Café (who made their first appearance of the season after they had to forfeit their Round 1 game and then had the bye last week).

The more experienced Real Steel side finished as 36-10 winners.

Best and Fairest three points went to AyJay’s Jayde George and team mate Maddie Bruce earned two points. Real Steel’s player, Cairo Haronga picked up one point. Maddie Bruce and Real Steel’s Stevie Toomey shared in the game’s Sportsmanship points.

No games were played last night due to Cobar Show preparations getting underway at Ward Oval.

Camels club had cause for celebration The Cobar Camels had cause for celebration on Saturday when both their men’s and women’s teams recorded victories over visitors, Gulargambone.

The Camels had a hard fought 22-7 victory in their Western Plains Rugby Union Round 3 First Grade game at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval while the Cobar Bactrians beat the Flamin’ Galahs 7-6 in the ladies game.

It was a lacklustre first half of footy for Saturday’s First Grade game with not much team talk going on (by either side).

Soon after Allen scored his second try following some scrappy play. He was again given room to move and he made the most of the opportunity to score out wide.

To their credit Gular never gave in and, after sustained attack on the line, the visitors were rewarded with a penalty try close to the fulltime whistle.

Despite recording the 15 point win, the Camels’ flair in attack in this game did not live up to their efforts from last week’s match against Coonamble. Had they repeated it this week, the Camels’ winning margin would most definitely have been much greater, however they still happily claimed the winning points.

Breakaway Darius Naera earned the Camels’ Best & Fairest three points, Ellison picked up two points and one point each went to Allen and second-rower Lachlan Mitchell (who won a few good lineouts for the Camels).

In the Bactrians women’s game, the Cobar side were helped in their 7-6 win over the visitors with the aid of three Roosterettes League Tag players, Taylah Good, Brianna Watson and Aisha Schofield.

Watson (2), Schofield (2), Georgie Buckman and Isabella Morton (2) scored their tries with Best & Fairest points going to Buckman, Lucy Belle and Georgia Nicholson. Nikki Gilbert their Players’ Player.
