Cobar Miners’ Memorial continues to make good progress

The completion of the Cobar Miners’ memorial is inching closer with further progress made over the past week.

Cobar Shire Council project manager Kane Kreeck confirmed the much awaited culvert base has been laid and is now in place as part of the project, funded by the Australian Government under its Building Better Regions Fund.

The Miners’ Memorial Heritage Park build at the eastern entrance to town is the brainchild of Cobar’s reigning Australia Day Citizen of the Year, Barry Knight.

Mr Knight wanted a way to honour and remember those who had lost their lives while working in the mines around Cobar.

Member for Barwon Roy Butler MP has publicly thrown his support behind the project.

“Once complete, the memorial will provide the opportunity for the local community to honour the lost miners, give a reason to gather and support each other, and reflect on the pride it brings back to the industry and those who work in it,” he said.

“For the many miners in Cobar and Barwon, it's a project that really deserves our support and respect.”

The memorial will feature a tunnel with a mine tag board like what you would find underground at the local mines.

Around 225 brass plaques on the board will feature miners’ names who have lost their lives at work.

Those who have passed because of mining illnesses will also feature in the memorial.

Cobar firefighters welcome the opening of new station Rural Fire Service (RFS) Assistant Commissioner Kelly Browne AFSM had the honour of officially opening the Cobar Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade Station on Sunday.

“After sharing space at the Fire Control Centre, this is now a dedicated place the Cobar HQ Rural Fire Brigade can call home,” Assistant Commissioner Browne said.

“The new station is a real boost to the Cobar HQ Brigade and will assist with vehicle housing, training and the fighting of fires locally as we come into the current fire season.

“I am sure it is greatly welcomed by the 38 current volunteer members of the brigade as well as the local community,” she said.

Assistant Commissioner Browne said NSW RFS is committed to providing firefighters with the equipment, infrastructure and resources they need to carry out the important work of protecting their local communities from fire and a diverse array of incidents.

She praised the volunteer firefighters for their ongoing efforts and also acknowledged the support these firefighters receive from their families, friends, employers and colleagues.

“We know it takes their ongoing support and patience which in turn enables NSW RFS volunteers to do what they do to save lives and property,” she said.

Cobar Headquarters Brigade captain Peter Cartner welcomed the $1.5million investment in the new station.

He said the Brigade has a long history having first been established in 1965 as the Cobar Central Bushfire Brigade.

It was based at the Cobar Shire depot and was run by Shire employees as a support brigade for fires within close proximity to the town.

“The brigade did not have a formal membership list until after the massive 1974/75 fires which burnt out 4.5 million hectares of western NSW and threatened the town of Cobar,” Cobar HQ Brigade captain Cartner said.

“These fires resulted in six deaths, the loss of 50,000 stock and 10,170 km of fencing.

“Ten years later, the fires of 1984/85 once

again decimated the Western Division with 3.5 million hectares burnt, five deaths, 40,000 stock and over $40million in damages.

“These fires again threatened the Cobar township and the Cobar Central Brigade were kept extremely busy.”

Captain Cartner recalled the brigade’s first station was built in the early 1990s in Railway Parade North.

The Fire Control Centre was later added on as an extension and officially opened in 1996.

“This station is the result of years of planning,” Captain Cartner said of their new station in Railway Parade South.

He said funding for the build was secured in 2012 and a number of possible sites were considered.

A planning committee was then formed and

in February 2015 ground works commenced.

Captain Cartner said progression was slow.

By July 2015 it was still a vacant block with survey pegs.

Slowly it came together and in June 2016, 12 months after it was surveyed, the building was declared finished.

It however did not meet standards and a Certificate of Occupancy was not forthcoming.

“This was a difficult time for the Brigade, seeing a station standing vacant for three years and not being able to call it ‘home’,” Captain Cartner said.

Then Covid hit.

“Isolation and social distancing restrictions meant we had to wait for a suitable day to show off our new station - this is that day.”

Cobar throws support behind White Ribbon campaign

White Ribbon Australia held a collaborative light lunch at Drummond Park last week with a timely message focused on engaging men and boys to end violence against women. The annual White Ribbon campaign also has a purpose to promote gender equality and a focus on males building healthy and respectful relationships with women. Cobar joined the national push to eliminate violence against women and girls during a light lunch held at Drummond Park last week as part of the annual White Ribbon Australia campaign.

White Ribbon claims its campaign is one of Australia’s biggest movements that engages men and boys to end violence against women.

The annual White Ribbon campaign also has a clear purpose to promote gender equality and a focus on males building positive, healthy and respectful relationships with women.

“We continue to promote awareness around preventing violence towards women,” Women’s Domestic Violence Court Assistance Service (WDVCAS) officer Mikaela Bowden said.

“The White Ribbon Appeal is a major way each year that we vocalise and say, ‘violence is never okay, particularly towards those less vulnerable, including women and girls’.”

White Ribbon Australia focuses on primary prevention by creating awareness of its campaign at schools and workplaces across the country.

Through their programs and campaigns White Ribbon Australia positively encourages men to be proactive in the social change required to prevent men’s violence against women and children.

Kubby House’s situation is now “very desperate”

Despite the Kubby House Child Care Centre receiving a raft of community support to help keep Cobar’s long daycare centre open for business, their situation this week is “very desperate”.

The 29-place centre, which is the main provider of childcare in Cobar, has been struggling to continue to operate following the resignation of the centre’s director at the end of last month.

The centre currently provides long daycare for 49 children each week with a further 38 children still on their waiting list for care.

Kubby’s management committee has also been in the process of rebuilding and over the past fortnight and has made a substantial effort to ensure the centre will remain viable.

Kubby’s new president Bonnie Fullagar said their situation is “very desperate”.

She said the centre may have to close if a new director is not recruited soon.

“Currently Kubby doesn’t have enough staff and responsible persons to get us through until the Christmas break.

“We hope a new director will be recruited as soon as possible and will be able to hit the ground running,” Mrs Fullagar said.

The committee had reached out to the community for help and recently met with representatives of CSA Mine, Peak Gold Mines and Cobar Shire Council, three of the town’s main employers.

All have offered support in various ways.

Endeavor Mine has also come to their aid and offered a house, rent free for 12 months, for Kubby’s new director.

“Despite these difficult circumstances, our current staff are doing an amazing job of caring for the children and keeping the centre operational,” Mrs Fullagar said.

The committee has appealed to any locals with childcare qualifications, even if they can only work on a casual basis, to come forward to help until a new Director and another Educator are recruited.

Mrs Fullagar said ongoing the committee is fully supportive of the staff achieving higher childcare qualifications.

Teenagers gain awareness about important life topics Cobar High School year nine and ten students gained critical knowledge and awareness about what constitutes sexual assault and domestic violence as part of “Love Bites”, a preventative program being used by schools across the State.

Clear objectives of the Love Bites program include providing a safe environment for students to discuss matters around domestic and family violence and sexual assault.

During the session students revealed what they considered a healthy or unhealthy relationship, defined different forms of domestic violence and the importance of developing ethical and respectful relationships.

A course presenter and youth worker Zanette Clements said such sessions are invaluable for students and their personal development into adulthood.

“The main focus of “Love Bites” is to educate and inform participants about issues and matters around sexual assault and domestic violence,” Ms Clements explained.

“We feel the sooner young children gain an understanding and awareness of issues like this, they are more likely to make good and informed decisions for themselves and if needed, others too.”

Students also learnt to understand and define sexual assault, what consent is, and how to ask and give consent as well as what to do if they are experiencing unhealthy relationships, to talk to about it and where to go to get Cobar High Year 9 and 10 students last week gained awareness around important who help.

Mayor’s report On Thursday, we held a Councillor Workshop which provided Councillors with an update on our current projects, an introduction to Council’s new staff members and a brief on the Newey Plan of Management.

On Sunday, the new Rural Fire Service Shed was opened. I was unfortunately unable to attend, but Council’s new Director of Infrastructure Scott Casey attended on behalf of Council and he reports there was a good crowd in attendance.

Council’s stakeholder and community consultation sessions are being held this week for our Cobar Economic Resiliency Project which is being funded by Building Better Regions Fund – Community Investment Stream – Round 4.

Yench pushes key benefits of Carbon Reduction Scheme Dear editor, I need help to convince our local councillors of the benefits to the rural ratepayers and businesses in town of becoming part of the Carbon Reduction Scheme.

Currently about 25 per cent of properties in our area are participating in the Carbon Abatements Scheme amassing in excess of $1.2billion.

The other 75 per cent of properties are missing out and need more information about the opportunities available to them.

My last attempt to convince the Cobar councillors to investigate opportunities and possibilities for the Cobar region to participate in the Carbon Farming industry was not supported by the majority of the councillors.

My notice of motion to the October Council Meeting was lost six votes to four, so I called for a division and it was noted in the Council minutes that Councillors Brady, Abbott, Marsden, Maxwell, Sinclair and Toomey voted against my motion.

Two Cobar Shire councillors are currently receiving funds from carbon farming, myself included.

I can assure you there are a lot of benefits for our rural ratepayers and business houses.

But, we need Council to lobby for changes to be made to the eligibility methodologies and for the process to be simplified so our rural landholders will become involved.

It is not a simple concept to understand.

Local Government, as the third tier of government, is in a position to assist with information and education for the landholders who are missing out.

Your readers can help by talking to the naysayers Brady, Abbott, Marsden, Maxwell, Sinclair and Toomey and convince them that we are missing out on a marvelous opportunity for people in the bush and in the town.

Shady plans for the deep end of our local pool

The deep end of Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool is set for a minor revamp with a new shade structure to be constructed to provide cover for children to marshall at carnivals and swimmers at other related events.

The funding for the project is courtesy of the Australian Government as part of its Drought Communities Program.

A main expectation for the project is that it will stimulate and create jobs in Cobar’s economy through the employment of local workers and contractors.

Meanwhile, the Cobar pool will again host the town’s annual Australia Day celebrations next January.

Exploration work ramping up in the Cobar district

Cobar Girl Guides are expected to move into their new home on Maidens Ave early next year if final building works continue to follow the expected completion timeline.

The Cobar Girl Guides are on track to be enjoy their new digs by early next year with building works scheduled to be completed by mid-next month, with some landscaping to follow.

The conversion of the Council-owned former gatekeepers’ three bedroom house on Maiden Avenue into the Guides’ future base includes a brand new large open kitchen, toilet and entrance ramp.

“The project is progressing very well, with some internal fit out still left to occur,” Cobar Shire Council project coordinator Carly Hunter explained.

“The project is on schedule to be completed (by) mid-December.”

Cobar Girl Guides leader Cathy Manns revealed a while ago their local current base had fallen into a state of disrepair, which included a discovery of annoying white ants.

Ms Manns said their new base will meet Girl Guides Australia standards allowing the group to utilise it for camping and weekend activities.

This project is jointly funded by the NSW Governments Stronger Country Communities Fund and Cobar Shire Council.

Exploration activities in the Cobar district are ramping up with a number of companies carrying out drilling activities and reporting promising results in recent months.

Five percent of quartz-carbonate veining and around 10 per cent of disseminated pyrite was discovered during Alchemy Resources recent second diamond drill at the overflow gold and base metal project in the Cobar basin.

A hole was drilled to a depth of 347.1 metres and located strongly sheared, altered sediments within the overflow shear zone of 260-280 metres.

Meanwhile, Talisman Mining Ltd has started a new phase of exploration to identify potential gold and copper locations at the Lachlan Copper-Gold project in the Cobar Basin.

The new reverse circulation drilling phase comes after a thorough review of activities by the company’s geology team.

In further mining developments, Helix Resources has revealed it has received essays from 13 holes drilled at the Cobar Gold Project.

Their other 16 holes were drilled in newly identified areas which the company said showed “potential geochemical and structural indicators.”

Another company, Sandfire Resources, has confirmed its new farm-in arrangement with CBH Resources.

The new agreement means Sandfire has the opportunity to earn up to 100 per cent interest in Endeavor Mine and the surrounding tenements.

The new deal also includes infrastructure and a 1.2 million tonnes-per-annum processing plant.

Sandfire said “stage one of the farm-in agreement provides the company with an initial minimum expenditure commitment of $3million over 18 months”.

New Cobar Complex Project

COMMUNITY INFORMATION SESSIONS Peak Gold Mines Pty Ltd (PGM) is a wholly owned and operated subsidiary of Aurelia Metals Limited. PGM is proposing to extend its current operations at New Cobar Complex, which is located between three and ten kilometres to the south east of the town of Cobar, by developing new underground operations to include the Great Cobar and Gladstone deposits.

The proposed extension to the operations at the New Cobar Complex is considered to be a State Significant Development, due to the size, economic value and potential impacts associated with mining projects. PGM have engaged EMM Consulting Pty Ltd (EMM) to undertake a range of technical studies as a part of the environmental impact assessment for the proposed development.

Our technical studies are almost complete and we are inviting all interested members of the Cobar community to attend a community information session to learn about the outcomes of our studies and provide feedback on matters of importance to you, prior to the environmental impact statement being submitted to the Department of Planning Industry and Environment for assessment in early 2021.

CHS students encouraged to discuss mental health issues Cobar High School students have gotten a timely reminder to take care of their personal well-being and give a voice to the ‘blue elephant’ in the room with representatives from youth based mental health organisation Batyr making the trip from Sydney to hold sessions last week.

Batyr was specifically created to help youths deal with mental health issues and to create awareness and empowerment for the younger generation to reach out and get support if they feel they are struggling with general life matters.

“Suicide is a leading method of death for young people, so our sessions focus on having discussions around aspects of mental health and breaking the stigma of younger people being too shy to discuss their issues or problems,” Batyr’s Regional Community Coordinator Sarah Morris said.

“If one student walks away from our session and chooses to talk to someone or gets help if they need it, then that’s a real positive and the very reason why we continue to shine a light on youth mental health awareness.”

Batyr claims of every 30 students in Australia, seven are currently dealing with a mental health issue, only two of those will seek help, leaving the remaining five to suffer in silence because of the stigma attached to being embarrassed to get help.

In sessions such as “Look Out For Your Mates” and “Stressed Out Program” coordinators encouraged participants to talk about their lives, while students also shared how they are coping with current school and life matters.

Facilitators also shared tips, knowledge and skills for students to lead mentally and physically healthy lives as they negotiate their teenage years.

Cobar is set for a scorching few days with temperatures to hover in the early 40s by the end of the week and over the weekend.

Today’s high will reach 35 degrees while tomorrow will jump to a toasty 39 degrees.

From Friday onwards however, the best place for locals to be will poolside or keeping cool at the Newey with dry, sunny and hot conditions the forecast as we move into next week. Friday will reach a high of 41 degrees with a low of 25 overnight.

Saturday will be pretty much the same with the mercury to sit at 40 degrees with light south westerly winds throughout the day.

Sunday will be very similar with another top of 40 degrees forecast, however partly cloudy skies are predicted which might provide some minor respite from the scorching conditions.

Cobar reached a top of 36 degrees to start this working week, with no rain on the horizon to ease the hot weather in the Far West.

Peak Gold Mines recently donated to the Cobar Public School Year 6 class of 2020 to help them create a new garden area in the school for everyone to enjoy. The garden was designed and created by Year 6 as their parting gift to the school. The students spent their lunch breaks painting rocks for the mock riverbed, cleaning up the area and prepping it for planting of new foliage. They also chose the wind sculptures to be used in the area.

• Solomon Haumono’s Impact Group was very warmly welcomed to Cobar last Thursday, with the group so impressed by the friendly reception they are already making plans to return next year. They say they’ll also try and bring some female rugby stars with them.

• Our reporter Michael Warren reports while Solomon Haumono is definitely a hard hitting tough guy on the rugby field, off the paddock he is a very softly spoken gentleman.

• Did you notice it got a bit noisier in town yesterday afternoon with the arrival of the Variety Resurrection Run car rally? The charity racers are raising funds for kids and headed off this morning to Lake Cargelligo before heading on to Parkes, Mudgee and then finishing in the Hunter Valley on Friday. We hear Australian musical legend John Williamson was part of

Reportedly Jethro is doing some promo work for Tourism NSW. • This week is National Skin Cancer Action Week, a time when we remind ourselves of the importance of good sun protection. Statistics show that one in four 25-44 year olds get burnt on summer weekends. The Cancer Council reminds adults to not only look after themselves, but to also be good sun-safe role models for their children.

• This week is also Road Safety Week with Member for Barwon Roy Butler calling on all road users in Barwon to take action and ‘pledge to drive so others survive’. Mr Butler is a member & the NSW Parliamentary road safety committee, and said they are working hard to come up with ways to reduce death and injuries on our roads. “But at the end of the day this problem can’t be fixed by a committee alone it comes down to our own behaviour,” Mr Butler said.

History is still readily available

Some parts of Cobar’s history are now on display in the CBD. A selection of interpretation boards from the museum have been hung in the Library arcade. Museum curator Kay Stingemore said they wanted to share some of the old exhibitions while the museum is closed and give locals and visitors a taste of our history. “We’re hoping lots of people will stop and have a look, maybe ask a question or make a comment. There’s another way to celebrate this Christmas

With lingering COVID-19 restrictions putting a dampener on Cobar Shire Council’s annual Seniors Christmas Party, Council has come up with a way for local seniors to still be able to celebrate.

Council’s tourism manager Demi Smith said due to COVID-19 restrictions the regular venue for the seniors’ Christmas party, the Council Chambers, won’t work for their annual party this year.

“With social distancing rules we can’t put the usual amount of people in there and our seniors are among the most vulnerable demographic,” she said.

Demi said they did consider holding the event outdoors in Drummond Park however Cobar’s summer heat would make it a very uncomfortable party.

So after a roundtable discussion, they came up with the idea of delivering Christmas hampers.

“We’ll be buying locally as much as we can,” Demi said.

“There will be puddings, cookies, wines, chocolates and other goodies.”

Local seniors interested in receiving a hamper are invited to register with Council.

“They will need to show a senior’s card or an age pensioner card.”

Demi expects councillors and staff will come together to make up more than 100 hampers to be distributed to local seniors.

“We are offering this to all seniors in the community and have about 22 already registered to go to Euabalong.”

Demi said they are still working out the delivery logistics but hope they will be able to take along some Christmas carol singers when they deliver the hampers to seniors’ homes.

“The annual Seniors’ Christmas Party is something that the councillors and the mayor want to do to give back to the community and this was the best way we could think of continuing that tradition under the current circumstances.”

Grand finalists have been decided

Divas and Real Steel are on their way to the Cobar Senior Netball grand finals this weekend after they won their A and B Grade finals games on Saturday.

Played in warm conditions, the Divas confidently outplayed Hot Shots to win 46-35 in A Grade while in B Grade Real Steel were in sensational shooting form to record a big 50-24 win over Gumnuts.

This Saturday Real Steel will take on Sharpe Shooters in the early grand final game in B Grade and in A Grade Divas will come up against Pumpettes in the late game.

Keen bowls field

A field of 11 keen bowlers took the field at the Golfie on Sunday with two games of triples bowls being played.

The first game saw Dane Thomas, playing double lead, team up with Long John Daly and Kyle Roberts to defeat Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Al Knight with a score of +8.

In the main game Karen Daly, Rex Hunt (who would be better off practicing bowls instead of kissing fish) and Barry Bargwanna were handed a bowls Masterclass lesson by ex -international Glenn ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe, Shane Carter and David ‘Ooze’ Knight with an impressive +14 win.

This Sunday promises to be ripper with the Roberts lads facing off in the Singles championship final and Dave Knight and Aaron Finn taking on Daniel Holt and Dean ‘Bogga’ McLeod in the Pairs championship final.

Cobar Little A’s relies on parent helpers each week in order to be able to offer kids a range of track and field events to compete in. On Monday night Hayden Betcke got some coaching from his dad, Wayne, in the Under 7s Shot Put. Hayden was quick to pick up the correct throwing technique and improved his distance on each attempt. It’s going to take a lot of practice to beat the long held Under 7s Boys Shot Put Cobar club record of a whopping 7.28 metres which was set by Luke Maiden back in the 2006/2007 season. The Under 7s Girls’ record is also going to be a hard one to match. It’s 5.95m and was set by Abby Carswell during the 2008/2009 season.

Bowlers were on top in local cricket The bowlers were on top in the local cricket competitions on the weekend which resulted in some abysmal team totals of 22, 37 and 48 scored in this round’s matches.

In the Twenty/20 competition match, played on Friday night, Bushies recorded a 116-run win over Golfie.

Bushies batted first and scored 5/153 from their 20 overs.

Stephen Nicholson (with 54 runs from 33 balls), Stewart Fraser (40 runs from 26 balls) and Travis Buckman (18 runs from 22 balls) scored the bulk of the runs for Bushies.

Anthony Robertson was the best of the Golfie bowlers taking two wickets for 19 runs off his three overs.

In reply, Golfie was dismissed in the 16th over for a total of just 37 runs.

N Chapman (15) and Nick Buckman (12) were their only batsmen to reach double figures. The next best score was two runs from Golfie’s co-captain Kyle Loughran.

Mark Fraser (3/5) and Paul Lawrence (2/10) returned the best bowling figures for Bushies.

On Saturday night a depleted CSA team was no match for Hombres going down by 127 runs. Batting first, Hombres posted 8/149 from their 20 overs.

CSA made a good start and at one stage had Hombres restricted to 4/32.

However, Jason Hampel (with a score of 56 from 36 balls) and Tai Bowker (34 from 25 balls) resurrected the innings to post a more than competitive total for Hombres.

Tadgh Waugh did the early damage with the ball for CSA taking three wickets.

In reply, CSA was bowled out for a total score of only 22 runs in the 11th over.

Their dismal innings featured seven ducks.

Alex Lennon top scored for CSA with 12 runs.

Nicola Harbison took three wickets for Hombres while Jai Stephenson and Graham Harbison claimed two wickets each.

40 Overs: In Saturday’s 40 Overs competition Empire defeated Golf Club by three wickets in another low scoring game.

Golf Club batted first and they were bowled out in the 20th over for 48 runs.

Mark Fraser (11) and B Singh (10) were the only batters to score doubles for Golf Club.

Tristan Everett ripped through the Golf Club batting line up taking five wickets for 13 runs.

Taugh Waugh at was his economically best taking two wickets for three runs off four overs.

It should have been an easy run chase for Empire however they lost Jay Egan on the very first ball then Jason Hampel and Tarun Bheemireddy for ducks.

Empire lost three wickets for no runs.

Empire then lost Jed Noonan with the score on four, Rahul Puri with the score on eight, Tadgh Waugh with the score on 15 and Justin Kelly with the score on 23.

Empire was 7/23 in the nineth over.

Golf Club was on cusp of causing an amazing upset before the experience of Jake Harbison (18 not out) and David Watson (12 not out) guided Empire home.

Stableford was a Heat taking its toll on lady golfers one-sided game Last Wednesday’s Men’s Golf Stableford competition was a bit one-sided with Jason Foster producing a great back nine to take out the game with 40 points.

Back in second place was David Tomek on 36 points followed by Peter ‘China’ Brien, who was third on a countback from Colin ‘Butch’ Eves, after both finished with 35 points.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Tomek on the 3rd hole and Eves on the 15th.

Saturday’s Stableford competition was sponsored by the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club with 15 golfers taking part.

Peter ‘China’ Brien played a solid game from start to finish taking out first place with 38 points.

In second place was Colin ‘Butch’ Eves on 37 points.

Bill Fugar on 35 points, was third on a countback from Garry Wilkin and Paul Kershaw.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Fugar on the 3rd hole, Will Brown on the 7th and Wilkin on the 8th.

Today’s game is a Stableford.

The Men’s Golf annual general meeting will be held on Saturday morning to be followed immediately after by the Bushies versus Townies Two Man Ambrose Day incorporating the Ernie Potter Memorial Trophy.

Cowboys fall short by 38 runs

Already this season the heat seems to be taking effect earlier than expected in the Ladies Golf competition with reduced numbers seen over the past week.

Last Wednesday’s Stableford could only muster six players with Ann Dunn winning on a countback from Geraldine Francisco after both ladies scored 36 points.

Susan Goonrey was third with 33.

The Nearest the Pin prizes on the 8th hole went to sisters Geraldine Francisco in A Grade and Susan Goonrey in B Grade.

The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club Day sponsored Stableford on Saturday attracted a few more starters with 13 players on hand.

Karen Walsh was the ladies winner posting 37 points. Geraldine Francisco was the runnerup on 35 followed by Susan Goonrey (34), Marlene Wynd (33) and Jannine Wilkin on 31.

Nearest the Pin prizes on the 8th hole went to Fay Hardwick, Susan Goonrey and Karen Walsh while on the 15th hole Fay Hardwick was once again closest for A Grade, Barb Barklimore for B Grade and Glenis Prisk in C Grade.

Only 12 players were brave (or crazy?) enough to take on the 40 degree heat in Sunday’s Mixed Four-Ball-Worst-Ball competition. Narelle Kriz and Steve Manns teamed up to score 27 points for the win from Jannine and Garry Wilkin on 26 points.

Fay Hardwick and Greg Clark finished in 3rd place with 25.

Kriz and David ‘Flash’ Gordon were Nearest the Pin winners on the 8th hole while on the 11th Serena Fraser and Garry Wilkin were the closest.

Individual scores were for the men were

Clark 34, Stewart Fraser and Manns 33, Peter Lawrence 32, Wilkin 31 and Gordon 30.

For the women, Wilkin 36, Kriz 34, Serena Fraser 32, Fay Hardwick and Tina Gordon 31 and Robynne Morton 29.

This week starts with a Par today followed by a Stableford on Saturday and on Sunday a Par Mulligan (an extra six shots over the 18 holes) will be contested.—T’d Off

Cougars are off to the grand final The Castlereagh Cougars Under 16s team, are through to the grand final of the Western Women’s Rugby League competition.

They toppled the Wiradjuri Goannas in the major semi final played in Dubbo on Sunday.

After leading 10-4 at half time, the Castlereagh side, which contains three Cobar players, went on to beat the Goannas 38-20.

The Castlereagh girls kept pushing and showed everyone why they have been undefeated this season and deserve their spot in the grand final. They will play Woodbridge this Sunday in Orange.

The Castlereagh Under 18s were beaten 4620 by the Orange Vipers in their minor semi at Mudgee on Saturday. The Castlereagh side got off to a slow start and the Vipers led 24-0 after the first quarter. The Castlereagh girls “won” the second quarter to trail 30-10 at half time but the Vipers finished strongly to claim the win. Cobar’s Hannah Carroll was a stand-out in the game and scored a try for her Castlereagh side.

The Cobar Cowboys were beaten by Dubbo in Round Two of the Brewery Shield cricket competition in Dubbo on Sunday.

Dubbo won the toss and elected to bat first.

They made 9/260 from their 50 overs.

Cobar’s Jay Egan and Josh Brown took two wickets each as the Cowboys toiled hard on the flat Dubbo pitch. In reply, Cobar were on track at 6/203 of the total and well ahead of the required run rate.

Opener Josh Brown had laid the platform with 77 runs and shared in partnerships with Tom McKenna (24), Stephen Nicholson (37) and James McClure (32).

Unfortunately, when Brown was dismissed, Cobar’s innings collapsed and came to a close when Egan was dismissed for 28.

Toomey takes all the limelight Jason Toomey stepped up last week in the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming competition to challenge Matt Harland for the lion’s share of championship points.

After Harland had hogged the limelight for the past three weeks of competition, Toomey took the focus off him with three out of four wins at last week’s swim.

Toomey won the opening event, the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim, after finishing 0.12 seconds outside his nominated time.

Murray Harland was the runner-up with 0.19 off his time and Matt Harland could only manage third place with a time of 0.21.

Toomey finished way out in front in the 50m event recording 0.03 for the win.

Murray Harland again finished second with 0.13 and Lucas Hardy was just behind in third place on 0.19.

Veteran Yabby Bob Clark spoiled Toomey’s good run of the night when he won the 100m swim. Clark took first place with a time of 0.28 off his nominated time.

Murray Harland was once again the bridesmaid on 0.37 and Greg Dimond claimed third spot with a time of 0.47.

Toomey finished the night with a win when he teamed up with Bill Fugar to win the Brace Relay novelty event.

The teams of two had to swim across the pool and dive down to collect a coin and swim back.

Toomey and Fugar finished 0.62 seconds outside their combined nominated times to win over Cameron van Breugel and Bridesmaid Harland (2.90) with Paul Swainston and Hardy further back in third place on 3.72.

Entertaining touch games

The Cobar Roosters Senior Rugby League Club was able to get a quorum at their second attempt at an annual general meeting last Thursday. Nathan McAndrew, Mollie Harley, Jessica Deighton and Chris Deighton were elected to the executive committee.

Deighton returned as president Chris Deighton was returned as the Cobar Roosters Rugby League Club president at the club’s second attempt at an annual general meeting last Thursday.

After a poor turnout for their first AGM two weeks ago, there was enough interest last week for the meeting to go ahead however not all of the executive positions were filled.

A new treasurer was elected with Jessica Deighton taking on the role heading into the

2021 season.

Nathan McAndrew was elected to the vice president’s position and Mollie Harley is their media officer.

While there were no takers for either the secretary and registrar positions, the registrar’s role was filled following the meeting with Rachel Simon taking on the role.

The committee will work to recruit a secretary in the coming weeks.

Blue Heelers finished as 7-4 winners over Stingers in a highly entertaining game in the Seniors division of the Junior Touch competition last week.

For the Blue Heelers Sophie Clark continued her good form in the competition and scored another outstanding try this week and also provided some good support play for her team.

Ryan Urquhart bagged a double in the match (both of which were great run away tries).

Luke Giurin and Brandon McGuire were in fine form for their Stingers side with both scoring tries but it was the Heelers’ driving touches in the middle which resulted in their eventual win.

In the top of the table clash, the Mighty Red Roosters continued their winning streak defeating Green Machine 6-3 last week.

Aisha Schofield scored two superb tries and also collected Best & Fairest two points while Best & Fairest three points went to Maddie Bruce who was a standout in the game.

Tahj Foley scored two tries for the Green Machine but the speedy Roosters held on for the win.

In the Juniors game last week between Carrot Chew and Blueys, Carrot Chew came out on top 5-4 in a very close match.

Zara Patterson, Parker Cryer and Mitch Allen all had great games while Billy George and Rowdy Barton both showed off their classy try scoring skills.

In a game that came down to the final play, Electric Eels finished as 7-5 winners over The GOATS with Piper Allen scoring the match winner.

Riley Bruce and Rhylee Jeffrey were outstanding in defence and Gabriel Harris proved to be hard to stop in attack in this match.
