A crisis was averted on Friday night thanks to some great driving by Mrs Claus who helped to deliver Santa just in time to lead this year’s Christmas Street Parade. There may have been less parade entrants this year than previous years, however it was the noisiest parade in history with the local emergency service vehicles testing out the horns on their vehicles, much to the delight of parade spectators young and old. While a number of changes were made this year to ensure the parade and gala shopping night were run as a COVID Safe event, from all reports it was still a successful night with a big crowd attending, the food stalls sold out, shop owners reported a good night of trading and the market stalls were also kept busy all night. The school’s students and teachers were on hand for Friday’s unveiling and got to view some of the items, including listening to a story written by then eight year old, Year 3 student Scott Evans, who wrote about life living on a property.

Police will not tolerate violence

Police have laid charges following their investigation into an incidence of violence that occurred at a licensed premises last week.

Police reviewed CCTV footage from the licensed premises and identified a 35 year old male who was witnessed using violence towards another patron.

The man was arrested by police and was charged with affray. He was granted conditional bail restricting him from entering licensed premises. He is due to appear at Cobar Local Court next month.

Sergeant Chris Power said Police have a zero tolerance for alcohol fuelled violence and will continue to take enforcement action for these offences.

Licences for Village’s 10 beds have now been approved After months of waiting, the Lilliane Brady Village has this week finally been granted licences for their 10 vacant beds.

Cobar Shire Council’s Director of Finance and Community Services Kym Miller said while there is still a fair bit of paperwork yet to be completed, approval for the use of the 10 beds was approved by the Australian Government Department of Health on Monday afternoon.

The 10 extra beds/rooms at the Village (which is owned and operated by Cobar Shire Council) were constructed as part of the Cobar Health Service Multi Purpose Service redevelopment with the new hospital opening in January this year.

The 10 beds at the Village have remained vacant since Council took possession of the new rooms in August despite there being at one stage a waiting list of 11 residents who were in need of aged care.

Mr Miller said they were faced with a number of obstructions in trying to get an Aged Care Approvals Round (ACAR) licence for the 10 extra beds.

He said the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and the COVID pandemic had been cited as delaying the annual approval process.

Mr Miller said council had repeatedly pleaded with the Department of Health to try and gain approval for the 10 beds to be used.

He said they made an application for an Off Round licence for one place at the Village Nursing Home and nine places in the Hostel section.

The 10 licences were eventually approved on Monday.

Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has been assisting Cobar Shire in the process and confirmed that the Department of Health had approved the allocation of the additional 10 places at Lilliane Brady Village aged care facility.

“This will support more of our welldeserving seniors in Cobar with aged care options available in their own community,” Mr

Coulton said.

As of Monday, the Village had nine people on their waiting list looking for a bed including one Cobar local who has been cared for in aged care in Nyngan for the past month.

Mr Miller said they will now be able start the staff recruitment process to accommodate the extra 10 residents.

Rev McLeod’s generosity will be missed by Cobar community Reverend Graham McLeod will be officiating at an early Christmas service at St Paul’s Anglican Church this Sunday and it will be his last official service in Cobar before he retires in January.

Rev Graham served in the Bathurst Anglican diocese for many years as part of the Company of the Good Shepherd.

When announcing Graham’s intention to retire to his parishioners, Bishop Mark Calder

pointed out that “in his generosity, Graham has continued on for four years past the retirement age mandated by our church ordinances”.

Rev Graham came to the Bathurst Diocese for short term locum work in 2002 in Blayney, Wellington and Condobolin before being commissioned as a Companion in the Company of the Good Shepherd (CGS) in 2003.

Over the next few years he served in Nyngan, Condobolin, Bourke/Brewarrina, Cobar, Cowra and Trundle and since moving back to Nyngan in 2011, he has also provided ministry in Cobar.

Rev Graham and said he been really happy during his 10 years in CGS. “People ask me, ‘How can you be happy living in a place like Nyngan?’ But if you get involved in the community, get involved with people, you can be happy anywhere.”

Rev Graham has been very much involved in the Cobar community taking a very special interest and part in the Miners Memorial Project; assisted with Cobar’s annual carols event

in Drummond Park over many years; and has provided wonderful spiritual support for the residents of the Lilliane Brady Village who have grown to love his “quirky” presentations including his collection of bells, flags and Christmas banners.

One of the most pertinent services provided

by Rev Graham to the Cobar mining community was a memorial service at the CSA Mine in 2013 for McMahon Mining contractors following a fatality of one of their team members on the site. At the request of the team members he then went underground to the site to give a “blessing” which was greatly appreciated. (Rev Graham suffers a little from claustrophobia so it was a bit challenging for him.)

In 2017 Rev Graham won the prestigious Premier’s Award for Services to the Community.

All who have known Rev Graham during his time in the Cobar Parish are welcome to a service on Sunday followed by a light supper.

Multiple awards Life Membership for Stuart Mosely Western Landcare region representative Stuart Mosely was recently honoured with a Landcare NSW Honorary Lifetime Member Award.

Landcare NSW Chair, Stephanie Cameron praised Mr Mosley and his commitment to Landcare on all levels including local, regional and state.

“Since 2015 when he joined, Stuart has given a great deal of his time to Landcare NSW and has been in numerous executive committee positions over the years and has only just stood down after two years as secretary,” Ms Cameron said.

“His passion for Landcare extended to being a representative of NSW Landcare on the National Landcare Network (NLN) Council.

“Stuart has held executive positions on the Western Landcare NSW committee for sever-

al years and has guided Landcare in the west for many years towards becoming a strong and healthy Landcare region,” she said.

Mr Mosely is a founding member of the Buckwaroon Catchment Landcare Group and was instrumental in policy reform to the NSW Native Vegetation Act. Executive Officer for Western Landcare Louise Turner said Mr Mosley’s work in supporting and the representing Western Landcare has been crucial in ensuring that the voice of Landcare in the Western region is heard.

“The contribution Stuart has made to all levels of Landcare is extensive.

“We are so pleased to share these contributions and the impact they have had to the Western Landcare community,” Ms Turner said.

Family Planning NSW is celebrating the success of their reproductive and sexual health outreach clinic in Cobar, which was launched in July 2019.

The Cobar outreach clinic bring Doctor Hilary Bower and Clinical Nurse Specialist Karen Wallace to Cobar Community Health for two days each month.

“It has been great building relationships with our Cobar clients over the past year and a half,” said Dr Bower.

By performing this outreach, Family Planning NSW plans to reach regional areas where it is more difficult for community members to access quality, low-cost reproductive and

The clinic is designed for anyone who has questions about reproductive and sexual health, regardless of age or gender.

“We offer bulk-billed procedures, and people can come in without a referral,” Doctor Bower explained.

“We want the community to know that we’re here for them.

“Even if you’re embarrassed about something, remember there’s nothing we haven’t seen before.”

The appointments available range from contraception, to breast checks, cervical screening tests, men’s sexual health issues and pregnancy options.

The outreach clinic is made possible through collaboration with Western NSW Local Health District, who provide a women’s health service and a sexual health service in Cobar on alternate dates.

for children in need by providing financial assistance from a sponsor to help disadvantaged families afford the cost of their child’s education.

Through the program children also receive support from a Learning for Life Program Co-

ordinator to connect the child and their family to local learning opportunities and other supports.

They will also have access to Smith Family educational programs to help them get the most out of their school years.

Well earned promotions for three outstanding local cadets The Cobar 221 Army Cadet Unit gathered socially on the weekend for their award presentations.

Cadets Braiden Jones, Brooklynn Mackay and Riley Bottom all received promotions in rank with Brooklyn Mackay also receiving a Gold Level commendation, the Cartner Family Award and the Boucher Shield.

Braiden Jones was awarded with the Greenie, Gnawer and a Navigation awards, while Riley Bottom received Cadet of the Year, Trained Solider and the Attendance awards.

Amara Bottom received the Dress and Bearing award, Nauman Faisal collected the CMC Drill award and cadets Tiana Jones, Reegan Traynor and Harry Franks all received Encouragement Awards.

The cadets are now looking forward to continuing their training in 2021 and are hopeful for a full year and some additional recruits.—contributed

Mild weather to continue this week The mild weather is set to continue this week with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting mostly mid to low 30s top temperatures all week.

The expected top for today is 33 and there’s a good chance we’ll get some showers later this afternoon or tonight.

It’s going to be hot and sunny start to tomorrow with a chance of a late thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening.

The mercury is expected to reach 38 tomorrow, the hottest day of the week, before it

cools off to 35 on Friday, 32 for Saturday and 33 is predicted for Sunday and Monday.

Thursday was our hottest day last week and that was only a mild 33.7 degrees with Friday around the same with a top of 33.6.

It was a beautiful weekend, although a bit windy with wind gusts of up to 46km/hr recorded on Sunday morning, with Saturday reaching 30.8 degrees while on Sunday the top recorded temperature was 32.3.

There was no rain recorded in the Bureau’s rain gauges over the past week.

St John’s Year 6 Graduation

Service NSW can help businesses to Dine and Discover Cobar businesses are being invited to sign up for the NSW Government’s Dine and Discover voucher program which aims to boost the dining, entertainment and tourism industries.

The NSW Government is planning to roll out the Dine and Discover program this month in Sydney and January/February 2021 in regional and rural centres to help give them a boost as they emerge from the COVID pandemic.

The program aims to get people out and about to help stimulate the economy.

Every NSW resident aged 18 and over will be eligible for four $25 vouchers which can be used at participating NSW businesses that are registered as COVID Safe.

Vouchers … can be used from Monday to Thursday which helps to boost businesses during quieter times.

Steps to building drought resilience

Providers have been chosen to deliver the Networks to Build Drought Resilience and Drought Resilience Leaders programs, two programs under the Future Drought Fund.

Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David Littleproud said the providers were selected through a competitive grant process.

“The $5 billion Future Drought Fund provides secure, continuous funding for resilience initiatives that will give farmers and communities the tools they need to prepare for, manage and sustain their livelihoods during droughts,” Minister Littleproud said.

“The networks program will build community capacity and boost the presence and reach of rural and regional community networks and build small-scale infrastructure projects.

“This will boost community connectedness and collaboration which builds drought resilience.

“The leaders program provides an invaluable opportunity for young people and emerging leaders to receive practical training and enable farmers to share skills and information with their peers through mentoring.

Hannah returns to bring scuba diving lessons to the outback Former Cobar resident Hannah Young is returning to Cobar next month to teach scuba diving lessons at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

Hannah grew up in Cobar and after completing a PADI Diving course while backpacking in Cambodia in 2014, she decided she wanted to become a dive instructor.

Just after celebrating her 21st birthday in 2015, Hannah moved to Cambodia to start “working” in her new career.

“At first I think my parents thought it was ‘just a phase’ but now they have seen how far I have come and the opportunities that have been created and they are super proud,” Hannah told The Cobar Weekly.

I completed my PADI Divemaster and PADI Open Water Instructor courses and then went on to do freelance work for a dive centre to gain as much experience teaching and guiding dives as possible.

She also spent some time co-managing a dive shop in the south pacific before landing a dream job as an instructor at a six star luxury resort in Fiji.

It was here she met her partner (who is also her business partner) Luke Caldwell.

“Living in Fiji was the type of dream you couldn’t make up!

“It was absolutely mind blowing - the country, the gorgeous people, the love, how welcome everyone makes you feel and their beautiful culture.

Another win for Drop offs needed to find touch winners Cobar Cowboys The Cobar Cowboys defeated Narromine by three wickets on the back of a great bowling and fielding performance in the Macquarie Valley Brewery Shield cricket competition played at Narromine on Sunday.

Cobar took all their chances taking nine catches in bowling Narromine out for 131 runs in the 33rd over.

Mark Fraser was the best of the Cobar bowlers taking 3/22 off 10 overs.

Jake Harbison and Fred McClure took two wickets each and Alex Fraser took three catches for the Cowboys.

In reply, Cobar passed the required total in the 34th over with three wickets in hand.

After the early dismissals of Jade Buckman (1) and Mitchell Holt (0), Josh Brown and Jake Harbison then combined to take Cobar along to 90 before Harbison fell for 48 runs.

Brown followed suit 12 runs later for 32.

Needing eight runs to win, Cobar then lost three wickets, before the experienced Stephen Nicholson came to the crease and brought the team home finishing with 23 not out.— contributed

Waugh leads CSA to Twenty/20 win

There were four great games of touch football last Thursday in the juniors competition with grand final spots on the line.

After a tie at full time, games in both the junior and senior competitions had to go to drop off situations to eventually find a winner.

With skill levels improving across both age groups, it was an exciting finish for teams to secure their spots.

In Juniors, it was a determined Blueys who surprised the Carrot Crew with a last minute try to playmaker Billy George in the drop off that sealed their win 7-6.

Despite Mitch Allen and Rowdy Barton having outstanding games in attack, the Blueys staged a fight back with Kai McCosker scoring three great tries and Sosie Barton dominating in defence and attack. Maddie Jeffrey crossed the line to score for Carrot Crew but it was an excited Blueys team who finished as victors to secure their grand final spot.

They will go up against a red hot Electric Eels side led by Nate Martin and Rhylee Patterson.

The Eels had a dominant win over the GOATS last week who were well served all season by Cohan Nicholson, Gabriel Harris and Jaxon Waugh.

Gabriel Harris had an incredible game in defence where she managed five straight touches in a single set. This however wasn’t enough to contain the Eels with Eli Martin, Lara Stephens and Drew Barton all cross-

ing for quality tries to seal their win.

In the Seniors competition a depleted Stingers side valiantly went down in a drop off finish to the Green Machine.

Green Machine crossed for a try in the dying seconds of the drop off to seal the win 7-6.

Troy Robertson and Henry Knight were standout players, displaying quality running lines and drives.

While for the Stingers it was Ebony Aumua and Jay Greenwood who tried all game to get their team over the line.

In a game that could of went either way it was minor premiers the Mighty Red Roosters who succeeded over the Blue Heelers 6-3.

The Blue Heelers started strong with direct running and they had the Roosters on the back foot until half time.

Ryan Urquhart crossed for a breakaway try and he was well supported by Toby Greenwood and Sophie Clark.

The Roosters went back to their game plan and returned strike with three unanswered tries, with Ethan McLeod crossing to seal their win.

Ava Fullagar had her best game all season, and was involved in everything.

The Senior grand final game tomorrow should be a fast paced, exciting match with the Roosters looking to wrap up the competition.

They will however be pushed all the way by a tough Green Machine side.

Yabbies earn more frequent flyer points Chris Powell sets new PB to claim triathlon win Yabbies who have already earned ‘frequent flyer’ points this season, Bill Fugar, Matt Harland and Murray Harland, once again featured on the top of the winner’s podium at the senior men’s swimming club’s event last Tuesday.

Fugar narrowly won the 30 metres handicapped freestyle event after finishing with the best time of 0.15 seconds off his nominated time.

Just behind him was Tyler Roberts on 0.18 and third place was a tie between Lucas Hardy and Peter Christen after both clocked 0.78 seconds off their nominated times.

The 50m event was hotly contested with Matt Harland finishing as the winner after he finished within 0.29 seconds of his time.

Once again Hardy and Christen couldn’t be

split and this time they tied for second place with 0.34.

Murray Harland, with 0.75 seconds off his time, was well out in front in the 100m swim with Fugar next best on 1.35 and John Carswell was just off the pace with 1.38 to finish in third place.

The Brace Relay event was a wheelbarrow race which involved swimmers walking across the pool while holding their partner’s ankles and then swapping roles on the way back.

Cameron van Breugel and Fugar were closest to their nominated time (0.07 seconds off) with John Claus and Matt Harland second with 1.03 and Murray Harland and Wade Greenwood were well back in third place on 2.06.

The Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) club held their second Triathlon event of the season on Sunday with eight athletes setting new personal best times.

With competitors facing a strong head wind after the turn around on the bike leg, it was a slow day on the bike for all and time had to be made up in the final run leg.

The first four competitors home all met the challenge and set new PBs in their run legs.

Long time CATS member Chris Powell was the first finisher on Sunday to win the handicap title.

Hot on his heels was Axel Fairfull followed

by Tommy Bryan and back in 4th place was Montana Daniel.

The top four finishers all received awards sponsored by Gumnuts Gifts & Homewares.

Axel had the quickest overall time for the day after setting PBs in both his swim and run legs to finish the 300m swim, 10km ride and 2km run course in 40 minutes and 30 seconds.

Chad Buckman (with a PB in his swim leg) and Zac Broughton both finished with the same time of 41.50.

Powell, with a PB on the run leg, completed the course in the next best time of 42.21.

Windy weather causes havoc for social bowlers A field of 12 bowlers took to the Golfie greens on Sunday and while the temperature was beautiful, the wind however caused havoc.

In the main game the scores were nine a piece after 13 ends.

Greg Read, John Daly and David Schofield had the momentum at this point, but that is where it ended.

Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond, Barry Bargwanna and Helen Boddy stormed home to win by a margin of +9 and collect the prize of a leg of ham for their troubles.

The consolation game was a rough and ready affair with Team “Deckchair” in control from the very first end.

Skipper Doug Hudson, Peter ‘China’ Brien (best and fairest for both teams) and David Thomas were cruising.

Ahead 16-9 after 14 ends, Team “Deckchair” lived up to their name and folded under pressure to allow David ‘Ooze’ Knight, Shane ‘Jimmy’ Carter and Karen Daly to fight back for a 16-all draw.

The close game was particularly difficult for China to swallow, and once again he was noted to have left early in a tired and emotional state.

Shooters flock to Cobar for Christmas Novelty event Perfect weather attracted 30 competitors for the Cobar Clay Target Club’s Christmas Novelty Shoot on Sunday.

Some had travelled from Bourke, Brewarrina and Tamworth to join the locals to vie for the renowned excellent ham and gift basket prizes, the challenge of unusual events, and to experience the club’s hospitality.

The first event, a 10 target Eye Opener saw competitors, ranging from AA Grade to C Grade, shoot a possible score of 10/10.

That was however the last of easy targets for the day, with only 10 shooters scoring a possible before the remainder of the program proved to a challenge for both experienced and

junior shooters alike.

The results for the 15 Mixed Targets event (which consisted of five single barrel off 11metres; five point score off 15m; and five double barrel off 20m) were: 1st AA Grade— Robert Thompson 58/58, 2nd Hank Pritchard 66/67; A Grade—Kim Manns 24/25, 2nd Sam Nardi 32/37; B Grade—Matt Harland 25/25, 2nd James Mitchell 24/25; C Grade—Mitchell MacPherson 23/25, 2nd Dick Deppeler 22/25; and the encouragement award to Aiden Barraclough.

15 Target Graded Handicap: 1st AA Grade— Bryan Manns 15/15, 2nd Peter Hosie 24/25; A Grade—1st Sam Nardi 15/16, 2nd Garry Jones

The Encouragement award went to Molly Barraclough who had to contend with some very low flyers.

Partners for the 10 Pair Deauville Doubles were drawn out of hat and five pairs shot a possible score, which was an excellent effort.

After a shoot-off the following were in the winner’s circle: 1st—Jim Manns and Jarrod Barraclough 15/15; 2nd—Sam Nardi and James Mitchell 15/17; 3rd—Garry Jones and John Taylor 14/17.

The Presidents Event was highly anticipated and was a Single Barrel, 10 Target Metered Handicap with Hank Pritchard 1st with 14/14 and MacPherson was second with 13/14.

The Overall Highgun, sponsored by J & R Contracting, was Bryan Manns with a score of 125/145.

Other Highgun winners were: AA Grade— Peter Hosie 116/145, A Grade—Sam Nardi 103/145; B Grade—John Taylor 106/145, C Grade—Mitchell MacPherson 92/145; Ladies—Macka Codrington 101/145; Veterans— Deauville Doubles finalists John Taylor and Garry Jones, James Mitchell and Sam Nardi Cliff Overton 114/145; and Juniors—Alex with the eventual winners Jarrod Barraclough and Jim Manns at Sunday’s Cobar Clay Codrington 83/145.
