Prince records Regional Assembly meets in Cobar landslide win Michael Prince has had a landslide win in the Cobar Shire Council by-election winning 77 per cent of the votes to claim the 12th spot on council. The final distribution of preferences from the by-election held on February 26 was calculated on Monday morning with the NSW Electoral Commission (NSWEC)’s website reporting Mr Prince had been elected after receiving 1,537 of the 2,021 votes received. His opponent, Jesse Cochrane Adolfson, received 452 votes while 32 votes were declared to be informal. NSWEC’s returning officer Vanessa Reschke said on Monday that it would however be another day before Mr Prince would be declared elected. She said as part of the election process once the final count has been carried out, there was then a waiting period of 24 hours when a challenge for a recount could be made. With no challenge made, Mr Prince was officially declared the winner yesterday. Mr Prince said after the long wait of 17 days, the result was “wonderful news”. “I really appreciate the support I received from the constituents. “I’m looking forward to beginning work next week with the council to see what sort of improvements we can make,” Mr Prince told The Cobar Weekly. He will be sworn in as a new Cobar Shire Councillor at next Thursday’s March Ordinary Council Meeting. Members of the public are welcome to attend council meetings.

Members of the Murdi Paaki Regional Assembly, which represents 16 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities from across Western NSW, held meetings in Cobar last week and also attended the official opening of Murdi Paaki’s new administrative offices in Bathurst Street on Wednesday. Cobar’s representative Elaine Ohlsen is at front (centre) and chairperson, Des Jones, is at rear far right. See Page 3 for full report.
