With the temperature a very pleasant 21 degrees on Friday for the Cobar Business Association’s annual Christmas Street Parade & Gala Shopping Night, it most definitely was “lovely weather for a sleigh ride together” on the Garford Fire Engine for Santa, Mrs Claus, their grand-elf Sofia and her dad Deputy Fire Captain Alex Lennon. Santa once again had the honour of leading the parade which attracted 15 different groups.

Best in Parade was Running On Empty Festival’s Santa’s Garage, with the Margaret’s Choice Parade Spirit award shared by Graham Harbison’s Bush Christmas, the Baptist Church’s Nativity Scene and the Cobar Junior Rugby League’s ‘Chooks’. Cobar Shire crowned Merriest Christmas Council Champion Cobar Shire Council has been crowned the Merriest Christmas Council Champion of 2022 after they raised a whopping $12,000 in a Christmas T-Shirt Day fundraiser last week.

Cobar Shire Council’s Human Resources Manager Summer Patterson, who helped to coordinate the fundraiser challenge, said she was thrilled with the total that Cobar had raised.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our workforce and our community,” Summer said.

“With the $12,000 raised divided by the number of Council staff (160), that equates to $75 per person, which is quite a remarkable effort in just one day!”

Cobar Shire was one of eight councils challenged by Moree Plains Shire Council to fundraise for a local cause.

The nine councils (Armidale, Narrabri, Walgett, Gwydir, Gunnedah, Griffith, Coonamble, Moree and Cobar) raised a collective $15,951.30 for their respective local charities. (No other council came close to Cobar’s total!)

The recipient of Cobar’s fundraising will be the Euabalong community which has been affected by floods.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said he will be speaking to members of the Euabalong Progress Association to make sure the money goes where it is most needed.

Under the rules of the Challenge, the staff could only raise money on one day and they went all out holding a morning tea at the depot and lunch in the park; they organised a 100 Club; auctioned off the General Manager; and walked the streets collecting donations from local business owners.

tions from Mayor Peter Abbott, who donated a portion of his mayoral salary ($2,300) and the Rotary Club of Cobar gave $1,000 (and donated the barbecue lunch).

Peak Gold Mines staff got onboard and con-

tributed $2,100 from the proceeds of their barbecue lunch and a 100 Club (with the winner donating her prize money back).

Aurelia Metals also made a contribution of $2,500 on top of the staff donation.

Station 256 Cobar crew farewell their departing captain Fire and Rescue NSW Station 256 Cobar captain, Tony Walkinshaw, has stepped down from his role as he makes the move to West Wyalong to take up a new position.

Tony has been the Cobar brigade’s captain for the past four years taking over the role from former brigade captain, Brad Lennon, when he resigned in December 2018.

Tony first joined the Cobar station as a Retained Firefighter in May 2008.

“I’d already been a firefighter in New Zealand for a few months before moving here,” Tony told The Cobar Weekly.

He was promoted to deputy captain in September 2013 and then moved up into the captain’s role five years later.

Tony said taking on the captain’s role had been a big responsibility and time consuming but he enjoyed the challenge.

“I’ve enjoyed helping the community, not

just fighting fires but also helping at vehicle accidents, Hazmat incidents and from time to time we help out the Ambos and police.”

Tony said he also liked meeting people and promoting the service. He said one of the downside’s of the role was that it did regularly cut into his “personal family time”.

He enjoyed his time with the “tight-knit” 256 crew and said he will miss them.

Tony is keen to continue to serve as a Retained Firefighter and has plans to join the West Wyalong station.

His vacant captain’s position will be advertised and, in the interim, the role will be carried out by Deputy Captain Alex Lennon.

“Tony will leave a big hole in the station that will be hard to fill, Deputy Captain Lennon said.

“With over 15 years experience as an emergency first responder in Cobar, his skill and knowledge as a firefighter was hard to match.

“His uncanny ability to see how an incident was going to unfold and what needed to be done before anyone else could is a skill very few possess and made him a great Captain.

“He helped the station get through some very dark times and was always about what was best for the crew and Cobar. We wish him all the best in West Wyalong.”

Police and emergency services were called to the residence at 5.10pm on Sunday following reports of a stabbing.

The 34 year old told police he had been stabbed by an unknown male.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Cobar Hospital before being flown to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A witness who saw a male running from the area around that time and wearing a face covering (believed to be a balaclava) is assisting police with their inquiries.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

DONATIONS POLICY In accordance with Council’s policy and the Local Government Act 1993, Cobar Shire Council may make available to local service, cultural, sporting, charities and non-profit organisations which operate within Cobar Shire, or provide a benefit to the residents of Cobar Shire financial assistance.

Cobar Shire Council is calling for applications for such assistance.

The applications will close Friday January 27, 2023.

Butler to run as an Independent State Member for Barwon, Roy Butler MP, will run as an Independent at next year’s State Government election following his resignation this week from the NSW Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party (SFF).

Mr Butler, the first-ever SFF Party candidate to take the seat of Barwon (and broke the 69 year hold on the seat by the Country/ National Party), along with fellow SFF member, Phil Donato, both resigned from the party on Monday citing irreconcilable differences.

Mr Butler said his resignation came about following SFF leader Robert Borsak’s comments aimed at former party colleague Helen Dalton MP, which suggested violence.

“Today I’m announcing my resignation from the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party, but I will continue to represent the people of Barwon as an independent in a very real sense, with my allegiance only to Barwon, to regional communities and to the people of NSW”, Mr Butler said on Monday.

At the 2019 State Election, Mr Bultler was elected as one of three members of the SFF in the Legislative Assembly, along with Mrs Dalton as the Member for Murray, and Mr Donato, Member for Orange.

“Together with Mark Banasiak and Robert Borsak, it made the SFF a formidable presence in Parliament,” Mr Butler said.

Mrs Dalton resigned from the SSF Party in March this year and became an Independent MP. Mr Butler said Robert Borsak risked bringing the party into disrepute when he made his physically threatening comment about Mrs Dalton in parliament.

“Both Phil and I are men of integrity. We could not let Robert’s remarks stand without some acknowledgement that he was wrong, nor could we allow him to continue to damage the electoral chances of the party,” Mr Butler said.

“We tried to fix the problems within the party but unfortunately that has not been possible.”

Mr Butler said that he has always operated a bit like an independent in Parliament so not much will change in that respect.

He will continue to work hard for his electorate and to advocate for the people of Barwon in Parliament.

Cooler days and nights for Cobar

Cobar has had some cooler weather over the past week with lower than average temperatures being recorded.

The coldest day of the week was Thursday when the thermometer only reached a top of 22.3 degrees (which is much lower than the average daytime temperature for this time of year of 32.8.)

Friday morning was cool with a minimum of 10.1 degrees recorded overnight before it reached a mild 23.6 during the day.

Saturday was fresh with a minimum of 9.1 degrees before it warmed up to a top of 29.7 degrees during the day. (Saturday’s minimum is almost 10 degrees lower than the long term average for this time of year.)

The mercury rose to 36.5 on Sunday, our warmest day of the week, before dipping to a milder 23.8 degrees on Monday.

Storms rolled in and around Cobar on Sunday afternoon and continued overnight with the Bureau of Meteorology recording 2.6mm of rain in town up to 9am on Monday morning. The Le Lievres at Yathonga near Louth north of Cobar reported 5mm in their rain gauge from the storms.

The recent rain brings Cobar’s total rainfall for 2022 to 651mm which, is much higher than the 2021 figures which show we had 472.6mm by this time last year.

The outlook for the week ahead is for more cooler weather with 22 the predicted top temperature for today and tomorrow while Friday is expected to be 24 degrees.

The maximum for Saturday is 26 while the forecast for Sunday is 28 degrees.

Our 2023 Australia Day ambassador Disability advocate and young business woman, Bronte Hendricks, has been named as Cobar’s Australia Day Ambassador for our 2023 celebrations at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

Bronte has a strong passion for disability inclusion and believes in changing preconceptions about what people with disabilities can do.

Bronte was drawn to working with people with disabilities in high school and went on to work as support worker after completing a Bachelor of Inclusive Education and Disability Studies.

Realising that young people with disabilities had few opportunities to enjoy experiences others take for granted, she co-developed Stellar Experiences with business partner Luke Muttdon and they head up a team of 30.

Their unique tour company organises social and recreational activities for groups aged 1635 years with mild to moderate disabilities and mental health conditions.

They provide access to common activities enjoyed by other young people including going to the footy or a music festival, visiting a winery, kayaking, skydiving, camping trips and even overseas adventures.

The tours are safe, supportive and ageappropriate and provide opportunities to build friendships and have fun.

Bronte is determined to use her platform as a disability advocate to create a shift in the way our communities perceive people living with disabilities and inspire our young people to live a life without barriers.

Govt support for goat industry The NSW Government is delivering the first program in Australia to accelerate the transformation of the goat meat sector from a wild harvested commodity into a long term, high value livestock sector.

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders said they will invest $1.2 million into a Going Ahead with Goats program to create a more sustainable industry.

“Australia is the largest exporter of goat meat in the world, and NSW graziers are the driving force behind this rapidly growing industry,” Mr Saunders said.

“Last financial year alone, exports generated a whopping $298 million, providing a critical income for producers in Western NSW. “The Going Ahead with Goats program will not only modernise goat production in NSW, but improve biosecurity outcomes by moving towards a more managed production system.

“It will provide NSW producers with a framework to guide future investment in the areas of reproduction, grazing management, genetics and animal health, which will ensure continuity of supply and sustained commodity value for goat producers, particularly in the western parts of our state,” he said.

Tickets are selling fast for iconic Australian singer and songwriter, Kasey Chambers’ concert in Cobar next month.

The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club will be hosting the global country artist on Saturday January 21 for a special acoustic and intimate dinner show as part of her regional tour.

Cobar Bowling & Golf Club manager Jason Howell said it was fantastic to have someone of Kasey’s calibre coming to Cobar.

“We want to make it something pretty special and decided to offer locals the option of a dinner show as well,” Jason said.

Reviews of Kasey’s acoustic and intimate shows report that her “stripped back and intimate” musical performance makes “for an unbelievable live experience”.

CSA Mine is looking for an Accommodation and Travel Administrator to join the team for six (6) months. Reporting to the Accommodation and Services Supervisor you will be responsible for day-to-day accommodation and travel administrative support. You may also be asked to support the Human Resources operations team during busy periods.

Lady golfers celebrate end of the 2022 season

Clay target club hold Christmas shoot Cobar Clay Target Club held a Christmas novelty shoot on Sunday with 25 competitors including visitors from Bourke, Brewarrina, Orange and Tamworth.

The first event was a 10 Target Eye Opener in which nine competitors recorded a possible score of 10/10. That was the last of easy targets for the day, and the remainder of the program was a challenge for both experienced and junior shooters alike.

The 15 Mixed Targets event called for shooters to shoot five targets single barrel off 11m, five pointscore off 15m and five double barrel off 20m. The winners were: AA Grade, Bryan Manns 50/50; A Grade, Cliff Overton 49/50; B Grade, Don Lovegrove 43/50; and C Grade, Jim Manns 42/50. (Encouragement Darcy Manns.)

In the 15 Target Graded Handicap event, the AA Grade winner was Robert Thompson with 16/16; A Grade Matt Harland 20/21; B Grade Luke Scales 20/22; and C Grade Damian Wray 14/15. (Encouragement—Aiden Barraclough.)

event were: AA Grade, Aaron Marsh 51/60; A Grade, Mark Kolstad 46/60; B Grade, Lovegrove 43/60; and C Grade, Julianne Foster 42/60.

In the 10 Pair Continental (targets fly out two at a time at varied heights and angles), the winners were: AA Grade, Thompson 18/20; A Grade, Kevin Hatch 19/20; B Grade, Harland 16/20; C Grade, Aiden Barraclough 17/30.

The 10 Pair Deauville Doubles teams were drawn out of a hat and only three pairs shot a possible score. After a shoot-off the team of Manns and Geoff Fennamore were first with 18/18; Hatch and John Martin were second on 17/18; and Lovegrove and Scales were third with 12/13.

The Overall Highgun winner was Bryan Manns with 124/140.

Other highgun winners were: AA Grade— Marsh 124/141; A Grade—Kolstad 120/140; B Grade—Lovegrove 110/140; C Grade—Darcy Manns 91/140; Ladies—Foster 86/140; Veterans—Fennamore 109/140; and Juniors— Barraclough 96/140.—contributed

The Cobar lady golfers held their Christmas party and presentation night at the Golfie on December 3 with awards and prizes handed out to the 2022 season winners.

President Narelle Kriz along with Captain Jannine Wilkin and Secretary/Treasurer Glenda Peebles made the presentations.

A Grade Club Champion Scratch winner Jenny Stephenson (runner-up - Narelle Kriz), Net winner - Julie Livingston (r/up - Sally Bannister), B Grade Club Champion Scratch winner - Serena Fraser (r/up - Robynne Morton), Net winner - Susan Goonrey (r/up Marlene Wynd), C Grade Club Champion Scratch winner - Glenda Peebles.

The Foursomes Championships Scratch winners were Sally Bannister and Geraldine Francisco (runners up - Jannine Wilkin and Karen Manns), Net winners - Marlene Wynd and Susan Goonrey (r/up - Brenda Fugar and Barb Barklimore).

The Forward Salver Match Play Winner was Narelle Kriz and the Eclectic winner was Sally Bannister.

Tena Blignaut had the most reduced handicap of the season (-14.5 in three games).

The Putting (best three rounds) prize went to Fay Hardwick and the Stableford points winners (best three rounds) were Robynne Morton and Jannine Wilkin.

Sally Bannister was the Par winner (best three rounds) and also had the most Birdies this season.

Collecting Gobblers awards were Geraldine Francisco, Fran Samios and Marlene Wynd.

The Vets pins were presented for the past three years with the 2022 winners being: Country Vets Scratch winner - Fay Hardwick, Net winner - Sally Bannister and Mable Mackenzie winner - Narelle Kriz.

Julie Livingston was the last Ladies Golf winner of 2022 in the Stableford game played on Wednesday November 30 scoring her popular 33 points.

She was one point in front of runner-up Sally Bannister who finished with 32, Fran Samios placed third with 29 and Fay Hardwick had 27 for 4th place.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Julie Livingston in A Grade and Pat Polack in C Grade.

(There were no B Grade players on the day.)

The 2023 season will commence at the beginning of March, and program books will be distributed prior to the first game.

Western Districts have announced the Cobar Lady Golfers Open will be held in August and Nyngan will stage the Western Districts RoseBowl in July.

In the meantime a nine hole summer competition is to be played with most games to commence at 4pm on weekends.

Golfers may also arrange to play in the mornings if preferred.—T’d Off

Roberts pair and Bargwanna dominate to take Triples title

Yabbies and ham for Christmas Yabbies and ham make for a great combination on the Christmas dinner table and it seems they also do in the pool!

For their December events, the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club have ditched their Yabbies stubby holder prizes for the winners of each event and instead are awarding a ham prize to an overall winner each night.

Lucas Hardy was the first ham winner for 2022 after finishing last Tuesday night’s event with a total of 17 points.

Hardy swam consistently all night finishing with two second places and one third.

Paul Swainston took line honours in the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim after he finished within 0.03 seconds of his nominated time. Hardy’s time for second place was 0.06 and Jason Toomey was third on 0.16.

Powell swam spot on his nominated time to win the 50m event with Murray Harland finishing in second place on 0.09.

Hardy’s time of 0.16 seconds off his nominated time earned him third place.

Harland touched the wall first in the 100m swim finishing just 0.12 seconds outside his nominated time.

Hardy’s 0.62 seconds earned him second place and Powell was third on 1.06.

While he didn’t get any points for winning the Brace Relay novelty event, Hardy did however get the glory when he teamed up with Swainston to retrieve coins from the bottom of the pool.

They completed the task within 0.56 seconds of their nominated time and were well ahead of the rest of the field.

Peter Christen and Powell were second (1.34) and Tyler Roberts and Dave Mexted had the next best time of 1.63.

Fourth spot had a time of 2.94, 5th was 7.75 while the “official time” for the final pair of Bob Clark and Powell (who doubled up) was “lots”!

With the Golfie greens running fast and true due to greenskeeper Stewart Simpson’s hard work and dedication, the weekend’s bowls focus was on the much anticipated Championship Triples Bowls Final.

The team of Kyle Roberts, Don Roberts and Barry Bargwanna outplayed Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey, Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod and John Goonrey to take the 2022 title with a +10 win on Sunday.

Also running true to form was lead bowler Barry Bargwanna’s uncanny ability to draw shot bowls time and time again!

Playing second, Don Roberts maximised his team’s favourable position adding fuel to the fire while Skipper extraordinaire, Kyle Roberts, also bowled true to form all day giving a magnificent demonstration of consistent, focused attention and precision bowling.

Team Goonrey/McLeod/Goonrey, try as they did, could not however douse the fire!

On the four other rinks on Sunday, 16 social bowlers enjoyed friendly banter both within their respective games and beyond!

The Rink 3 winners by a margin of +1 were Tony Brown and Karen Daly over Bian Smith and visitor Rob Renkin (Bramble Bay).

The margin on Rink 5 was +2 with David Schofield and visitor Janet Renkin winners against Peter ‘China’ Brien and Kelly Beard.

The Rink 4 winners, Mike Sargent and Allan Gardoll on +7, were the runners-up for the day after they beat David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Scott Hilton.

The overall winners on a pretty convincing +17 were the team of Doug Hudson and Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond over Alan Knight and John ‘Shark’ Daly.

A first time George The Giraffe recipient, Scott Hilton, was happy to accept his award for his wrong biases although he did have some stiff competition!

Friday Twilight bowls kicked off with the ‘Spider’ event and, yet again, a newby won with Ray Fellows clearly chuffed by his achievement.

The winners of the night were Don Roberts and Damon Pike (another newcomer) with +8 against Kyle Roberts and Tony Polack.

Bian Smith and David ‘Ooze’ Knight dominated their game to finish with a +7 victory over Karen Daly and newcomer Andrew Roberts.

Alan Knight and Greg Clark’s +7 win against Allan Gardoll and Peter ‘China’ Brien was pretty much declared when China’s reverse (yes - backwards) delivery (aka bowl travelling with force in the opposite direction of the green) upset his equilibrium!

Golfers pleased all 18 holes are back in play

Golfers were pleased to see fine weather and all 18 holes of the Cobar Golf Course were back in play on the weekend.

Saturday’s Men’s Golf Stableford competition attracted a field of nine players.

Scott Mayne, with 32 stableford points, finished as the winner while a countback was required to separate second and third places.

Peter ‘China’ Brien got the nod over Greg Read for second spot after both players finished with 28 stableford points.

Max Phillips picked up the only Nearest to the Pin prize won on the day on the 8th hole.

Scores were a little better in Sunday’s Stableford competition.

Seven players contested the event with Geoff Dunne coming in well ahead of the field with 35 stableford points to take the win.

A three-way countback was required to separate the minor placings after three players finished with 30 stableford points.

Peter Robinson finished in second place, Peter Lawrence was third and Max Phillips was back in 4th place.

None of the five Nearest to the Pin prizes on offer were won.

A win on debut for Petersen

Kate Petersen from the United States made her debut as a jockey on Saturday at the Cobar Miners Race Club Pop Up race meeting. Petersen rode five of the six races on the program for Cobar trainer, Wayne ‘Wap’ Prisk, which included a win in Race 1 onboard Jawsome as well as two third places. Petersen is pictured above on Cinders, also trained by Prisk, just prior to Race 3.

Brewery win for Cowboys

The Cobar Cowboys had a narrow win over Bourke in their Brewery Shield cricket match on Sunday at Ward Oval.

Bananas to do battle with Red Rangas The Bananas and Red Rangas will meet in tomorrow afternoon’s Junior Touch grand final in the 9-12 years age division.

Both sides finished as winners of the elimination semi final games played last Thursday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

The Bananas won a high scoring game, 7-4, over the determined Orange Socks side. After a tough first half and, with the sides locked at 3all at the break, it was anyone’s game from there on. First half try scorers George McDonald (2) and Tom Presig (1) had set the ground work for the Bananas early in the game, and Jaxon Waugh ran in three first half tries for Orange Socks to even the scores at the break.

Two brilliant second half tries by Harpa Martin, which added another four points to the Bananas’ tally (as female points are doubled), helped them to their win. Jaxon also ran in

another try in the second half to finish with a big haul of four tries for Orange Socks in the game.

All the action in the other Juniors game between Red Rangas and The Blues occurred in the second half as the score was 0-all at halftime. Mason King (2) and Ella Oborn ran in tries to help Red Rangas to their tough 4-1 win with Charlie Nicholson scoring The Blues’ lone consolation try.

Games in the 13-16 years age division were postponed until yesterday as player numbers were low due to some team members absent due to a school excursion, others were involved in the Year 6 graduation and a number were sick.

The Flamingoes and Green Guns met last night and Untouchables played SpongeBobs with the winners to play in the grand final.

Barracudas and Butchers to meet in grand final After a storm interrupted the first of the Adults Mixed Touch Competition semi finals, the draw was reconfigured last week and the winners of those games determined which sides would be tomorrow night’s grand finalists.

Top of the table DC & C Barracudas grabbed an A Grade grand final berth with their win last Thursday over 4th placed Phat Athletes.

The DC & C Barracudas however had to work hard for their 8-6 win, in what was a very physical game in which blood was spilt!

Ash Davies led the try scoring for his Barracudas team with three tries while Adam Doherty scored two tries for the Phat Athletes.

The other A Grade final game produced an upset with the third placed, The Butchers, grabbing a 6-4 victory over second placed Red Hot Chilli Steppers, who were missing a number of key players.

The young Butchers side were well served by their try-scorers, Kai Taylor (2 tries), Tadgh McMullen, Sarah Morley and Reynold Mugugia.

In B Grade, DJW Dingoes and Rusty Snails had wins last week to progress to tomorrow’s B Grade grand final.

The DJW Dingoes easily accounted for an undermanned Urban Strength team, 19-2, with Bethany Smith touching down three times while Laura Barnes, Bella Coughlan, Lochlan Ford and Jarrod Blake all scored doubles for DJW. The other B Grade match between Rusty Snails and Haymans Snowflakes was a much closer match with the Snails working hard to increase their 2-0 half time lead to 4-0 by the fulltime siren.

Lisa Dormer and Alec Fraser (2) were Rusty Snails’ try scorers.

The A and B Grade grand finals will take place tomorrow night at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

Cobar Cowboys survived a scare against Bourke It was a big weekend of cricket with three games played at Ward Oval in the senior Twenty/20, 40 Overs and Brewery Shield competitions.

In the Brewery Shield competition, the Cobar Cowboys representative team survived a scare against Bourke winning a close match by two wickets on Sunday.

After winning the toss, Bourke batted first.

The visitors were bowled out in the 38th over for a total of 136 after a disciplined bowling display by Cobar.

The Cowboys’ opening bowlers Tristan Everett (1/25) and Mark Fraser (1/14) set the tone for Cobar early on with Everett claiming the first wicket at the start of the 6th over with Bourke at 1/13.

Jason Hampel, with figures of 4/29, was the pick of the Cobar bowlers and Ryan Urquhart (2/18) finished off the tail.

In reply, despite scoring quickly, Cobar lost regular wickets.

Their middle order of Jason Hampel (20), Tristan Everett (18) and Jake Harbison (15) all got starts but couldn’t capitalise and go on to big scores.

The Cowboys looked to be in trouble when they were seven down and still needed 58 runs.

The Cowboys’ tail end, Mark Fraser (34 not out) and Ryan Urquhart (10 not out) however did the job and got Cobar home in a tense finish.

Cobar Cowboys’ wicketkeeper, Jake Harbison, claimed the first wicket in the Brewery Fraser and Urquhart held their nerve and Shield cricket match at Ward Oval on Sunday morning with a handy catch. Bourke opener Cobar reached the target in the 34th over Cooper Sheridan was dismissed when he was caught behind off the bowling of Tristan (with a wicket to spare) to secure the win.

The Cowboys welcomed Chris Mitchell Everett at the start of the 6th over. and Nabeel Rashid for their first representative games for Cobar on Sunday with the pair 6 Barton St presented with the team yellow caps prior to Ph: 6836 2725 the start of the game.

Cobar hosts Narromine this Sunday for the next round of the Brewery Shield competition.

In the Twenty/20 competition match on Friday night, the Tilpa/Bushies (Tushies) team defeated Howie’s Hombres by 57 runs.

Batting first, the Tushies made 4/140 runs.

Openers Jade Buckman (52) and Adam Hill (48) top scored with Nabeel Rashid contributing 17 and he remained not out.

In reply, Hombres made 8/83 from their 20 overs.

Joe Regan (21) and Ben McBride (13) top scored for Hombres.

Rashid returned the best bowling figures for Tushies taking two wickets for five runs off his three overs.

In the 40 Overs competition match on Saturday, Empire defeated Golf Club by six wickets.

Batting first, Golf Club only managed 61 runs as Empire’s young bowler, Ryan Urquhart ripped through Golf Club’s batting line-up taking five wickets for 14 runs off seven overs.

Jack Brown picked up two wickets and Nicola Harbison and Tristan Everett also accounted for one wicket each.

In reply, Golf Club claimed four wickets however in form Empire batsman, Jay Egan, guided his team to victory and remained at the crease on 40 not out.

For Golf Club, Mark Fraser grabbed two wickets and Jason Hampel and Jake Harbison took one apiece.—contributed

Pop Up meet brings the Christmas crowd Formerly from the United States, Kate Petersen made her debut as a jockey on Saturday and won the opening race at the Cobar Pop Up Picnics on Jawsome for local trainer Wayne ‘Wap’ Prisk.

Working for Goulburn trainer Danny Williams for the past four years as a forewoman, Petersen (29) was offered several mounts at the Cobar meeting by Wayne Prisk and her long journey was rewarded when the 10 year old Jawsome came up trumps in the first race on the program, the 1,000 metres Cynend Building And Construction Handicap.

(Wilson, $2.80) came from last with a strong, wide run to beat Flying Foxy (Emily Waters, $2 fav.) and the leader Jester Diva (Ricky Blewitt, $8) in the 1,000 metres Nutrien Russell Class 1 Handicap.

(Greig won the $50,000 Picnic Championship with Hemsted earlier this year and her quest has already commenced to qualify multiple runners for the 2023 final.)

Menindee-trained Budget King set the pace in the 1,370 metres QUBE Trophy Handicap however the first two home were from the Greig stable, Inzaghi, giving Dubbo jockey Wilson a winning double when beating Get Up Alby (Bourke) and the Prisk-trained Equilibrium (Petersen).

Narromine-based Blewitt, also rode a winning double, on Bella Days and Dutton Ranch.

Trained at Forbes by Peter Kirby, Bella Days ($1.60 fav.) strolled home over seven lengths clear of More Than Luck (Waters, $3.50) and Rebel Lilly (Petersen, $4) in the 1,200 metres Nicholsons of Nymagee Class B Handicap.

Visiting trainer Benno Bowen from Cunnamulla, Queensland had wins with Ice Kitten and Dutton Ranch.

Ice Kitten (Bourke, $7) led by five lengths in the 1,200 metres Dean’s Carpentry & Concreting Maiden Plate and lasted to win by a short neck from Red Card Rosie (Blewitt, $6).

Dubbo-based Sebastian Galea, riding at his first meeting, was a fast finishing third on the $4 chance Her Call.

Jackal (Waters, $2.20 fav.) led by six lengths but was run down and beaten a half length by Dutton Ranch (Blewitt, $2.80) with Outback Pat (Bourke, $4) third in the 1,370 metres PJL Class B Handicap.
