Exciting plans to upgrade caravan park Cobar residents may have noticed a few changes being made at the Cobar Caravan Park over the past six months after new leasee/managers took over in December.

The park is now under the management of Matt Williams from Sustainable Park Solutions (and member of the G’day Parks independent caravan and holiday park group) who hopes to transform the park into an “Outback Oasis”.

Matt has made some marketing changes including giving the park a new brand, website and signage.

“We’ve undertaken a major tree maintenance and lopping program, installed new electric barbecues throughout the park and upgraded the main electrical switchboard,” Matt said.

“We’re currently installing a new block of three studio units using local contractors and trades for the installation.

“This week we are installing new air conditioners in five cabins so there’s plenty of refurbishment works going on at the park.

“The park has been a little unloved over the last few years so we are working hard on improving the quality and consistency of the guest experience,” Matt said.

“We also have purchased our furniture and whitegoods through local suppliers and we try wherever we can to use local suppliers and keep the dollars in town.”

Matt said there’s also lots more new amenities planned for the park.

“We have recently submitted a master plan to Council for a multi-million dollar upgrade of the park which will see a range of new recreational and communal facilities added to the park over the coming years including a playground, flying fox, meeting room, new

amenities block as well as additional accommodation for tourists and corporates,” he said.

Matt and his company are no stranger to managing and upgrading caravan parks.

“We currently own and or manage six other caravan parks and these are spread across New South Wales and Victoria so we spend a lot of time in the car driving between parks.

“We also run a park consulting services business providing park redevelopment and master planning advice across Australia,” Matt said.

“Our clients are other caravan park operators as well as Councils. For example we have re-

cently completed a range of works for the Central Darling Shire Council and are excited about the opportunities this will create for the communities of Wilcannia and White Cliffs.”

Cobar Caravan Park attracts a mix of guests from Grey Nomads passing through, families on school holidays, workers and also guests transiting through Cobar on their way to interstate capitals.

Matt said on average they stay one to two nights but is hoping when the museum and road to Mt Grenfell re-open, guests will be able to extend their stays a bit longer.

All but two councillors plan to nominate for another term Most of our current crop of Cobar Shire Councillors are keen to continue in their roles and have nominated (or plan to nominate) for the upcoming Local Government election in September.

Deputy mayor Jarrod Marsden was the first to nominate announcing via a social media post last week that he had registered as a candidate.

“It has been a privilege to represent the people of the Cobar Shire for the past 13 years and I hope the ratepayers see fit to give me a chance to keep working for the betterment of our wonderful shire,” Cr Marsden said.

A poll of Council’s eight other current councillors has revealed that all but two councillors have plans to stand again.

Our current mayor, Peter Abbott, is one of those who is undecided as to whether or not he will be running again due to ongoing ill health.

Council’s shortest serving Councillor, Cr Kate Winders, who was elected to Council at the December 2018 by-election, is also undecided due to health reasons.

Cr Janine Lea-Barrett, like Cr Marsden, has already made up her mind to stand again and has recently lodged her nomination with the NSW Electoral Commission (although as of yesterday it had not been updated to their website).

Cr Lea-Barrett was elected to Council in 2016 and said she plans to run again as she hasn’t achieved everything she wanted to when she first decided to join Council.

She said one of her platforms was the industrial area.

“I believe I pushed hard and it’s been im-

proved,” Cr Lea-Barrett told The Cobar Weekly.

“Also the railway crossing at Bourke Road, which now there is a footpath to, and Council is talking to John Holland [Rail] and they have to put in a pedestrian crossing, so I’m happy about that. It’s been an extremely long process.

“I would still like to use my knowledge and background to assist with the [water] pipeline.

“I believe there is still far more work to be done there to make sure we secure water and also power,” Cr Lea-Barrett said.

Council’s longest serving councillor, Cr Peter Yench, has served for almost 40 years. He has been advocating for some time for “new faces” to join Council, however he himself doesn’t have any plans to step down.

Cr Yench said Council will still also need experienced Councillors like himself to guide the new councillors, in what he hopes will be a new direction.

“I’m a bit worried about the direction the current Council is going in with all these projects. What about the maintenance and upkeep that is going to be needed down the track?

“Is this going to result in a big bill for ratepayers?”

Cr Yench said he was also concerned that more grant funding wasn’t being directed to further securing water and that Council should make it a priority to deepen our water storages.

Cr Peter Maxwell, who has completed two terms of council, confirmed last week that he will also “throw his hat in the ring” to stand as a candidate for this election.

He said he was proud of what the Council had achieved in the past nine years he has served on Council.

“When Lilliane [Brady] first approached me to run for Council, that was shortly after Council recorded a $3million deficit.

“I love what I’m doing. The town’s been good to me and it’s a way for me to give back to the town,” Cr Toomey said.

“I love being part of this community.

“I’ve been lucky to be a Life Member of three local clubs and I’m happy to represent them and the rest of the community,” he said.

“I felt honoured when the Shires Association came to me and asked if I could speak to other Aboriginal people who are interested in being on council. I would encourage Aboriginal people who are interested to nominate,” he said.

Cr Bob Sinclair joined Council 13 years ago and last week confirmed he also would be running as he still had some “unfinished business”.

“I’d like to see through a few projects and there’s a lot more work to be done with rural local roads,” Cr Sinclair said.

“There’s been some good progress that has been done in the rural roads area but there’s still some work to be done and I’d like to see it followed through.”

Cr Sinclair said he was pleased to see the “town was going quite good” and that many residents had a positive attitude about the town.

Cr Julie Payne said she had thought about finishing up after she’s completed her five year term this year however, she feels she can’t as she too believes there’s “still a lot of unfinished business”.

“I’ll have to go for another three years to see things through,” Cr Payne said.

She said there were a number of Council projects still in the works that she would like to see completed and a couple of other council matters still “need tidying up”.

Local residents who are interested in running as candidates have until August 4 to nominate with the NSW Electoral Commission.

When Cobar voters go to the polls on September 4, they will be required to vote for 12 councillors.

If only 12 candidates nominate, they will be duly elected without an election. If 13 or more candidates nominate, we will go to the polls to elect a Council of 12.

If less than 12 nominations are received, all nominated candidates will be duly elected and a by-election will need to be held within three months to elect the balance.

New Dr sees an avalanche of opportunities in Australia The Cobar Primary Health Care Centre has recently welcomed another new permanent doctor to the centre with overseas trained, Dr Abiola Adesina, joining the staff.

Nigerian-born, Dr Adesina became a family physician 15 years ago after completing his post graduate training at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

He has worked as a doctor in Nigeria, Namibia and Botswana and, in the past 10 years, he has worked in the public health system as a chief medical officer.

He recently decided to make the move to Australia with his wife and three children.

“I came to Australia based on my post graduate qualification. I came here as a specialist through a specialist pathway,” Dr Adesina said.

He then had to fulfil a number of conditions set down by the AHPR (Australian Health Profession Regulation) authority before he was able to start practicing in Australia.

Dr Adesina said he chose Australia and Cobar as there was “an avalanche of opportunity” here for him to further develop his skills.

“And Australia has a reputation for welcoming expatriates,” he said.

His areas of particular interest include women’s health and sexual reproduction, emergency medicine, mental health and children’s health.

The move to Cobar has come as a bit of a surprise to the whole family as Dr Adesina said all they knew about Cobar was what they had read on the internet, which was very limited.

“I wasn’t sure exactly where I was going to!”

While he hasn’t previously worked in such a remote location, he said “medicine is the same everywhere”.

“The only difference is culture, and their approach to diseases,” he said.

So far Dr Adesina and his family have found Cobar to be a nice place with friendly people.

“It’s small enough to know the people you are dealing with and big enough to get your basic needs met,” he said.

The family was also pleased to find a lot of activities that the children can be involved in while Dr Adesina’s wife is continues her studies as an Oral Pathologist.

Nigerian-born, Dr Abiola Adesina has recently moved with his family to Cobar and has recently started working as a permanent doctor at the Cobar Primary Health Centre.

$200m storm and flood recovery funds Cobar Shire is one of 12 Local Government Areas in the Parkes electorate that will benefit from a $200 million recovery funding package from the Australian and New South Wales governments to provide support for communities affected by the February and March 2021 storms and floods.

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said the $200 million in support will be delivered through eight key initiatives and will help with the next stage of recovery for storm and flood impacted regions.

“The impact of the severe storms and flooding on our communities and industries in towns across the Parkes electorate has been

significant, with damage to local roads, businesses and residential properties,” Mr Coulton said.

“This third phase of recovery support is in recognition and appreciation of the work involved to repair and rebuild these major public assets and infrastructure and will provide support for our local economy.”

Mr Coulton said the recovery funding is targeted to help industry and job retention, help rebuild community infrastructure, deliver a range of projects to safeguard mental health and community wellbeing, and ensure impacted regions have resources that they need to bounce back.

Substantial water leak is expected to soon be resolved A substantial water leak in bushland on the northern edge of town is expected to be resolved soon as part of Cobar Shire Council’s plans to upgrade water storages.

Council has been aware of the leak for some time, which is located near the Sound Chapel to the north of the town.

Council’s Water and Sewer Manager Victor Papierniak said repair work will however be problematic as the entire Cobar Water Board system, which includes the town supply and supply to the local mines, needs to be shut down.

He said replacement of the surge tank near the Sound Chapel (which is where the leak is coming from) has been included as a priority as part of a storages pump station upgrade project which is currently out for tender.

Also included in the project is the replacement of the water storages pump station and the booster pump station at the depot.

Mr Papierniak said Council is hoping to engage a successful tenderer in September and the work (which will be done in consultation with all consumers) will be able to commence soon after.

It’s planned that the new tank and pipework will be laid adjacent to the old system and that A substantial water leak on the northern edge of town is expected to be resolved as part of multiple shut downs will occur in an effort to provide less disturbance to consumers.

Hearing date set

A hearing date has been set for the Land and Environment Court to determine if Cobar Shire Council’s decision to reject a development application to extend the existing mining camp will be upheld.

Council’s solicitor, Marsdens Law Group Senior Associate Jisella Corradini-Bird, advised on Monday that a hearing date for the matter commenced by mining camp owners, Rovest Holdings P/L, has been set for the end of September.

Ms Corrandini-Bird said it’s expected the Commissioner will hold a site visit to the camp (depending upon COVID restrictions) closer to the hearing date.

If you’re considering nominating as a candidate for the 2021 NSW Local Government elections, you should read this notice. It provides general guidance about the process of nominating, and candidates’ obligations and responsibilities. Prospective candidates should seek their own independent legal advice if they are unsure whether they are eligible to run for public office in a local council or how the law applies to their specific circumstances.

Grouping of Councillor candidates on the ballot paper Two or more Councillor candidates may form a group on the ballot paper, and where eligible, request a group voting square (box above the line) be printed on the ballot paper for the group.

In addition to lodging the nomination form listed above, these candidates must also lodge a Request to form a group form.

Nomination deposit All candidates must pay a nomination deposit of $125 each to the NSW Electoral Commission.

Where candidates also lodge a Request to form a group, the deposit is capped at $625 for a group of five candidates or more.

If using the online nominations system, the deposit must be paid by either MasterCard or VISA.

Registration for electoral funding purposes NSW has strict laws that regulate the election campaign finances of political parties, candidates and groups at the election. These include requirements to operate a campaign account, and to record and disclose political donations and electoral expenditure. In addition, there are caps on political donations and electoral expenditure.

Prior to being nominated, candidates and groups can separately apply to the NSW Electoral Commission to be registered for electoral funding regulation purposes. Only once successfully registered a candidate or group is allowed to accept political donations and pay for electoral expenditure.

Forms for applying to be registered as a candidate or group are available on the Commission’s website. Online registration is now available.

Applications for electoral funding purposes close on Wednesday August 4, 2021.

From August 5, 2021, all nominated candidates will be deemed to be registered and all will take on significant legal obligations for record-keeping and making disclosures.

New infrastructure project at Cobar High almost complete The cricket nets at the Cobar High School (CHS) have undergone a refurbishment during the school holidays.

CHS principal Shane Carter said he was pleased to see the school’s cricket pitch, which is also available for community use, undergoing resurfacing.

He said the pitch was worn and in places had become a trip hazard.

A new concrete base has been laid with a synthetic pitch to be installed over the top.

“The pitches will now be safer to use and easier to maintain and will provide students with facilities that are second to none,”

Mr Carter said.

The cricket pitch refurbishment is one of a number of infrastructure projects recently completed at the school.

A shade has been installed over the basketball courts and the basketball courts have also been re-surfaced; a 285,000L water tank has been installed to help water the school’s oval; a number of classrooms have been refurbished; and the school has purchased a large selection of books to help focus on improving student’s reading targets.

Further plans at the school include upgrading the computer lab and the installation of outdoor gym equipment.

“Students will have access to facilities that are equal to, and in some cases better, than their city counterparts,” Mr Carter said.

Some cold starts

Cobar residents woke up to their coldest day of the year last Wednesday with a freezing –1.3 degrees recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology.

Some locals also reported “Jack Frost” had paid a visit overnight with one resident posting a photo of her vehicle’s windscreen covered in a thick layer of ice on social media.

Thursday got down to 2.5; it was a one degree start to Saturday; and 2.4 degrees was the minimum on Sunday morning.

A MashUp workshop

Groups of adults and kids interested in learning how to make jewellery were able to attend workshops on Saturday at the Copper City Dance Centre. Locals Molly Negfeldt and Ash Warrender from MashUp designs guided participants through a couple of techniques to manipulate polymer clay into different patterns to make a range of earring styles including studs, dangles and resin coated. Two of the participants came over from Bourke for the workshop, and a few people were keen to continue creating and were able to purchase adult craft kits as an add on to the workshop (similar to their Creative Kids kits). ▪ Photo contributed

COVID testing for Sydney workers in regional areas State Member for Barwon Roy Butler has raised his concerns with the NSW Health Minister about the need for Sydney people who work in regional areas to undergo COVID testing.

“We could all be forgiven that thinking that people must be tested before leaving Greater Sydney for essential work in regional NSW, Mr Butler said.

“We would be wrong. It’s a recommendation only,” he said.

“I believe it should be a requirement for people to be tested before leaving Sydney for essential work in the regions, preferably getting a negative result before setting off.

“Just this week we have over 100 film crew and staff heading west to film near Broken Hill – in my mind this is not essential work and places the entire far west at risk,” Mr Butler said.

“When the Premier and Health Minister talk about the need to contain the spread, this is one loop hole they need to close to do just that. We simply do not have the health system out west to cope with an outbreak of COVID,” he said.

“I have contacted the NSW Health Minister asking for this to be urgently addressed.”

New school rules

Students in Cobar (and other regional areas) are returning to school this week with the latest COVID restrictions enforcing some new school rules.

At Cobar High School students from Year 7 and above are encouraged to wear face masks in line with the current recommended NSW Health regulations.

School principal Shane Carter said while this is not mandatory, the vast majority of students have elected to comply with the face mask rule.

Cobar High, in addition to Cobar Public School and St John’s School have all restricted non-essential visitors from entering the schools; parents, carers and visitors are not permitted at assemblies (Cobar High has cancelled all assemblies until further notice); and drop-offs/pick-ups are required to be made at the school gates.

Cobar Public School has cancelled school excursions this year and postponed their Spring Fair until next year.

St John’s scheduled parent/teacher meetings this week will now be done via phone.

Telling tourists where to go

I am finally back on deck after a short stay in Dubbo Base Hospital with pneumonia.

I have nothing but praise for the Dubbo Base’s Dr Tim Stanley and the ICU staff.

Deputy Mayor Jarrod Marsden capably filled in for me while I was absent at both the official opening of the Cobar Miners Memorial and the Monthly Ordinary Council Meeting.

His performance at both was exceptional given the lack of preparation time.

I see much has been happening around town in my absence with the upgrade works moving along well at Drummond Park and work has also recommenced on the Louth Road footpaths.

We also have some wonderful new tourist signs on the caravan park fence and more fantastic artwork in the main street courtesy of the very talented, Seigrid Peters.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler is encouraging community groups within the region to apply for a Club Grants Category 3 Fund Infrastructure Grant.

“The NSW Government offers grants to communities across NSW to support the building, renovation and fit-out of infrastructure,” Mr Butler explained.

“To be eligible for funding, applications must meet eligibility conditions including, the project location, the applicant and project benefit, purpose and development status.

“There is also a requirement for local government applicants to match funding.”

Infrastructure Grants can be used toward the costs of construction, alteration, renovation, completion and fit-out of buildings and community infrastructure in the following areas: Arts & Culture: $50,000 to $200,000 available per project; Community Infrastructure: $10,000 to $200,000 available per project; Disaster Readiness: $10,000 to $200,000 available per project; and Sport & Recreation: $100,000 to $300,000 is available per project.

Applications close at the end of the month.

Mr Butler encourages any local groups interested in gaining more information about the grants to contact his office in Broken Hill.

COVID-19 update: Virtual Council Meetings On March 25, 2020 the Local Government Act 1993 was amended to allow Councils to meet remotely to reduce the Coronavirus (COVID-19) risk. The amendment allows our Council Meetings to be closed to the public if a livestreamed webcast is made available.

Towser’s Huts at tourism meeting

The matter of possibly opening up the historic Towser’s Huts site approximately three kilometres out of Cobar was discussed at last week’s Tourism Advisory Committee meeting.

The Towser’s Huts are thought to have been built in the 1890s as living quarters for workers at the nearby mines.

Over the years they were continuously damaged by vandals until the site was fenced off.

At last month’s meeting the matter of access to the site was raised and committee member Kay Stingemore took up the matter with Peak Community Consultative Committee as the site sits on Peak Gold Mine land.

“Peak staff pointed out the difficulties of gaining access as it is an active site,” Mrs Stingemore reported.

“There would also be concerns with parking, signage and vandalism.

“Nevertheless, they will look into it,” Mrs Stingemore told the meeting.

Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Cobar Station 256 is currently recruiting for retained firefighters.

The Cobar brigade responded to 66 incidents in 2019/2020.

This included fires, hazardous materials incidents and rescues.

Firefighters undertake a wide range of duties including: fire suppression (buildings and bushfires), rescue, hazardous material response, community education and the fire prevention activities.

To ensure the brigade is able to continue to provide this service to the community, they are currently looking for more firefighters.

Employers in Cobar are encouraged to support their employees to become part of FRNSW. There are benefits to the community at large as well as human resources benefits for employers. FRNSW provides firefighters with extensive training including first aid, working at heights, heavy vehicles, confined space, breathing apparatus use, atmospheric monitoring, manual handling and rescue operations.

It also provides an essential emergency service to the people and businesses of Cobar.

Cobar brigade Captain Tony Walkinshaw is keen to hear from interested people living in the community who would be willing to be trained as a retained firefighter.

FRNSW welcomes applications from men and women, indigenous people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Shift workers, fulltime or part time workers, mums with children at school are all encouraged to apply for this on-call, part time employment opportunity.

To be eligible to apply for a retained firefighter position the applicant should: be available to attend fire calls and other incidents to suit the stations needs; live within a reasonable distance from Cobar Fire Station; have good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team; meet FRNSW’s medical and physical requirements; and be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident.

Final standings decided in netball

Thompson wins memorial trophy again There was a field of 17 shooters for the Beryl Jones Memorial Trophy event at the Cobar Clay Target Club on Sunday, with some visitors joining the local contestants.

It was a sunny but chilly day, with a slight breeze in the air, which helped to keep the shooters alert and on their toes.

Skeet is traditionally the first event for the Beryl Jones Memorial Day. For some shooters it was the first time they had attempted skeet—the goal is to hit two clay targets that are crossing one another from different heights—and it was a new element of clay target shooting to enjoy while others just walked away shaking their heads.

After lunch, four down-the-line events were held.

In the first event, a 20 Target Double Barrel, there was a tie in AA Grade with both James Manns and Robert Thompson finishing with possibles, (perfect scores) of 20/20.

Matt Harland also shot a possible to win A Grade as did Brad Kendrick, the winner of B Grade.

Damian Wray, with a score of 17/20, finished as the C Grade winner.

Manns and Thompson once again couldn’t be split in the 25 Target Single Barrel event to tie for the second time in AA Grade, once again with perfect scores of 25/25.

There was also a tie in A Grade with Jim Manns and Tony Polack equal first with 23/25.

Kendrick won B Grade with 21/25 and Joe Webster, with 20/25, was the C Grade winner.

The feature event, the Beryl Jones 30 Target Handicap, was won by Robert Thompson with a near perfect score of 29/30.

Dick Tulloh was the runner-up with 30/32 and James Manns was third with 29/32.

The final event was a 10 Pair Double Rise with James Manns the AA Grade winner with 18/20; A Grade was taken out by Tony Polack with a score of 17/20; and the C Grade winner was Damian Wray with 16/20.

To help fight off the chilly conditions, a barbecue lunch was provided and club members also contributed items for a very enjoyable afternoon tea.

The event was a good opportunity for members to polish their skills in readiness for next month’s Golden Clay Target shoot.— contributed

The last of the regular games of the Cobar Netball Association’s 2021 Senior Netball competition were played on Saturday with the teams now decided for the finals.

Divas finished at the top of the table in A Grade, and their run home was an easy one after they received a forfeit this week from their closest rivals, Pumpettes.

Pumpettes finished as runners-up in A Grade with JKM in third spot and Hot Shots were 4th.

Real Steel finished out on top in B Grade with Golfie Mystics runners-up ahead of Sharp Shooters and Gumnuts finished back in 4th place.

In Saturday’s A Grade game, JKM finished as easy 35-16 winners over Hot Shots.

JKM took the lead from the outset and, by half time, they were up by 11 goals.

Hot Shots’ defenders contained the JKM shooters somewhat in the third quarter however JKM came home strong in the final quarter to easily win by 19 goals. JKM’s best on court was Ellise Woodbridge while Hot Shots were well served by Naomi Unzen.

Real Steel got off to a flying start in their B Grade game with Sharpe Shooters on Saturday and Sharpe Shooters were forced to play catchup for the rest of the match.

Real Steel’s shooters however just kept on improving throughout the game.

They had a nine goal lead at the end of the first quarter, they were up by 12 points at half time and, by the end of the third quarter, Real Steel led by 14 goals.

Sharpe Shooters rallied in the final quarter however the damage had already been done and Real Steel finished with a 45-18 win.

Best on court were Bella Coughlan (Real Steel) and Megan O’Brien (Sharpe Shooters).

The winning margin was similar in the other B Grade game with Golfie Mystics beating Gumnuts 41-13.

By half time Golfie Mystics had a clear lead of 18 points and they continued to dominate the game throughout the second half to finish with an easy 28 point win.

Kelly Tomek was best on court for Golfie Mystics and Katrina Francisco was Gumnuts’ standout player.

This Saturday JKM will play Hot Shots and Sharpe Shooters meet Gumnuts in the elimination semi finals while Divas play Pumpettes and Real Steel take on Golfie Mystics in the major semis.

Weather gods turned on a treat The weather gods turned on a treat of a morning on Sunday at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club for the 12 bowlers in attendance.

On rink 11 David Thomas, Barry Bargwanna and David Schofield produced a great fight back to eventually win their game.

Trailing by eight shots after only seven ends, they clawed their way back to win by a shot on the last end over the team of Karen Daly, Mike Sargent and Shane Carter.

On rink 10 the score was 10-all after 11 ends but then a huge end with a six shots win

by Alec Fraser, Jim Goonrey and David Knight on the 12th end proved deadly as their opposition of Bayley Prendergast, Dean McLeod and Ian Prendergast were unable to make up ground and they eventually lost by seven shots.

In Triples Championship action, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey, John Daly and Craig Grimmond did battle with Frank Singleton, Alan Knight and Greg Read in what turned out to be a fantastic match.

The lead changed seven times during the game and went down to the wire with Read and Co. holding out for a one shot win.

The coveted ‘Giraffe Award’ was shared by David Schofield (with a wrong bias) and Jim Goonrey, who was showing his age with the long ends – he might need a longer run up!— No bias All deadlines—2pm Mondays

Good win for Bactrians

It was Ladies Day at the Cobar Rugby Club on Saturday at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval and shine the Cobar Ladies did with the Cobar Bactrians women’s rugby team scoring a fantastic 3-2 win over the visiting Gulargambone ladies side.

Sally Schintler, Nichola Heagney and Stevie Toomey were their try scorers with the Coach’s Best & Fairest points going to Brooke Daly (3), Tori Thomas (2) and Stevie Toomey (1). Taylah Good (pictured above with the ball) was named the Bactrians Players’ Player, and Good suggested that after such a great game, “the whole team should get Players’ Player”.

Due to the unforgiving nature and volatility of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current events in the eastern parts of our state, the decision unfortunately has been made to again cancel this year’s Spring Fair Carnival at Cobar Public School.

This decision was not made lightly. We are upset about this, especially due to the hard work already put in by a few to make it happen. The safety and wellbeing of our school community is and always will be our number one priority. We will be planning for Spring Fair to go ahead in 2022 and it will be massive!

Soccer players bound back on to the fields at Ward Oval Sport

After a short break over the school holidays, soccer players once again bounded eagerly onto the fields at Ward Oval on Saturday morning.

In the Mini’s competition, United’s Joshua McMillan, Joe Arnold and Logan McKenzie showed some great teamwork scoring three

goals despite being low on players. Joshua McMillan and Oliver Neate took home the Gumnuts milkshake awards this week.

The green Rangers team came up against the orange Rovers with Xavier Foster and Cooper Trudgett being high scorers for the Rovers. Ford Ellison and Cooper Suridge were awarded the Cobar Hotbake donut vouchers for their great efforts.

In the Mids, Liverpool took on United with Liverpool players Alfie Toomey, Rhylee Patterson and Zara Patterson scoring goals to help their team to a 7-2 win. Joseph Theakston and Montana Grentell scored for United. Nixon Small and Zara Patterson took home the awards for Liverpool, while Abel Nilson and

Jeremiah McMillan earned United’s awards.

The Rangers team scored nine goals in a solid 9-4 win against the Rovers in their Mids game. Rovers didn’t take it lying down with Isla McKervey adding a goal to their total score of four and taking home the Gumnut Milkshake award for her efforts. The Rangers awards went to Hayley and Taylah Wyllie.

The Seniors game once again ended in a 4-all draw aided by Luke Guirin (back for the school holidays) scoring two goals for Spurs.

Caleb Theakston and Raymond Jones also netted goals for Spurs. Rangers’ Ethan McLeod and Jeremy Theakston were on fire netting four goals between them and displaying exceptional teamwork.—contributed

Great turn outs for golf all week

There were great turn outs for all games in the Ladies Golf competition last week.

The annual Bannister’s Day Stableford on Saturday had a thrilling finish with three ladies sharing the top points.

The overall result had Fay Hardwick winning on a countback from Narelle Kriz and Robynne Morton after all posted 34 points.

Karen Manns was next on 32, Susan Goonrey had 30, Marlene Wynd 29 and Donna Prendergast had 28 points in the field of 21 players.

Another 12 golfers lined up for Sunday’s Par event with some good scores recorded. Ann Dunn was the winner with +3, Narelle Kriz was runner-up with + 2 and Karen Manns and Susan Goonrey finished the day with even cards.

There were 12 starters for last Wednesday’s Stroke round. Sally Bannister was the winner with Marlene Wynd the ‘bridesmaid’ after a

countback when each scored 75 net.

Angela Fryer is enjoying her time back on the course and finished with 76 net for third place followed by Fay Hardwick on 78 net.

Barb Barklimore was the best with the short stick having 25 putts for the 18 holes.

Some exciting golf is scheduled to take place over the coming weeks (if COVID 19 doesn’t put a spanner in the works) with the Far West Rose Bowl and Intermine Golf Challenge events just around the corner.

This week kicks off today with a Stableford game and a Stroke on Saturday.

Sunday’s Pink Day (raising money for breast cancer) should attract a big field and ladies are asked to take a plate for after the game.

The three lady Stableford teams event is also a time of reflection, for those no longer with us who will always be remembered.—T’d Off

Field of over 40 for Bannister’s Day Over 40 players turned out for the annual Bannister’s Golf Day on Saturday, an event which has been hosted by the Bannister family for over 60 years.

From the 23 players in the men’s event, Barry Doyle finished as the winner with a good score of 40 points.

He had the advantage of playing alongside Michael Bannister himself, a man who knows every blade of grass on the Cobar Golf Course.

Playing with Bannister meant that he would have learnt every trick and secret on the course, secrets only a “skins’ player would know!

In second place with 38 points was the consistent Bill Fugar and third place went to Mr Inconsistent, Geoff Rorke, with 34 points.

Alec Fraser came 4th, also with 34 points, and in 5th place was another “skins’ regular, John Martin.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won on the 3rd hole by Michael Bannister, 7th Peter Lawrence, and the 8th hole prize was won by Men’s Golf captain Peter ‘China’ Brien.

There were no winners on the 11th and 15th holes.

Michael Bannister said he was very happy with the number of golfers who turned up, considering the COVID restrictions placed on travelling.

After a big Saturday, there were only 10 players to contest the Stableford event on Sunday.

Stewart Fraser was the winner with 38 points.

Jay Egan finished second in with 35 points and Bill Fugar was once again in the winner’s circle in third place scoring 34 points.

Only one Nearest the Pin prize was won, and that was by Victor Mendez on the 8th hole.

Fraser also defeated Rob McIver in the Bill Bartlett Matchplay competition.

Fraser’s next game will be against the winner of the match between Greg Clark and Bill Fugar and the winner of that will move into the final round.

Saturday’s game is an individual Stableford and Sunday is the July Monthly Medal, which is also a Stableford.

The Inter Mine Golf Challenge is coming up at the end of the month.—Out of bounds

Cobar Camels’ Best & Fairest player, Jacob Christie looking for a gap in the Gular defence in Saturday’s Round 11 Western Plains Rugby Union match at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval. And while Christie didn’t manage to find a hole in the defence on this occasion, soon after he picked up a Gular fumbled ball and raced over to score first points for the Camels.

Gulargambone outpoint the Camels Gulargambone travelled with a full side including a few subs on the bench to take on the Cobar Camels in Round 11 of the Western Plains Rugby Union competition on Saturday.

The visitors appeared to be in a hurry to get back on the team bus and head home as the game was barely five minutes old and they had posted their first points with a try outwide which was then converted from an excellent sideline kick.

The Camels then kicked into gear and repelled Gular’s continuing raids on their line before the visitors once again found space outwide and scored again in the corner.

Gular’s kicker was on target again to extend their lead to 14-0.

Shortly after the Camels made the most of a ball fumbled by Gular and Jacob Christie snatched it up and raced in to score the Camels first try.

Kody Martin’s easy conversion closed the

gap to 14-7 and it looked like it might be going to be a close game.

However Gular was keen to wrap it up and stole the match points from the Camels with an eventual 45-14 win.

Jay Ellison scored the Camels’ other try which Martin converted also.

Cobar’s Best & Fairest were Christie (three points), Martin (2) and one point each went to Stephen Gillette and Brad Crawford while Ellison was named Players’ Player.

The game was marred by a serious injury which required hospitalization for the Camels’ Travis Schintler.

Roosters triumph over top of table team, Dunedoo

The Roosterettes had some added firepower in their League Tag match against Dunedoo on Saturday when former representative player Lisa Travis came out of retirement to join her old team and, proving she’s lost no form, she earned the Players’ Player award.

Roosterettes almost caused an upset The Cobar Roosterettes went so close to causing another upset win when they took on the top of the table, Dunedoo Swanettes, in Round 13 of the Castlereagh League Tag competition on Saturday.

After Dunedoo had earlier controlled the game, the Cobar side came back to level the scores to 30-all with just six minutes left on the clock in the thriller match played at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

Dunedoo however regathered and went on to post two late tries to see them through to a 40-30 win.

Roosterettes’ co-coach Jay Egan, who truly believes he has a winning side this season, said the girls just need to have more confidence in their abilities as they have showed in their past three games that they can well and truly match it with the top teams.

Returning veteran player Lisa Travis (who had reportedly retired last season) brought some additional attacking firepower to the Roosterettes side this week and, after having a big game, she earned the Players’ Player title.

The team’s young new recruits also shined in Saturday’s game with Sandie Mitchell opening the scoring for Cobar, which gave the Roosterettes an early lead, and another new recruit, Neve Carter, also crossed for a try.

Carter had a brilliant game in attack and defence to pick up the Coach’s Best & Fairest three points.

Georgia Boland earned two points and Brennah Aumua and Brianna Watson collected one point each.

Aumua was once again a try scoring star for the Roosterettes finishing the match with a three try haul.

Watson was also a big contributor to the Roosterettes scoreboard tally adding 10 points with a try and three conversions.

The Roosterettes head to Gulgong this Saturday where they should make a good showing as Gulgong sits below them on the competition ladder in 8th spot.

The Cobar side is still parked in 6th spot but with four competition games left to play (and a bye) they can still make the top five for semis.

That six point lead was however very shortlived as the Roosters rallied and capitalised on a Swans error which saw tireless, big front rower, Gerald Mackay, grab possession and bust over to score.

Watson’s conversion then levelled it up at 20-all midway through the second half.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, the Roosters were throwing the ball around looking for scoring opportunities.

In contrast the Swans appeared flat and were hard pressed to get the ball out of their half.

When the Roosters came at the Swans’ line six and a half minutes out from full time, they had try scoring options both left and right.

The ball was sent left to big Ben Simon who careened through the flailing Swans defence to put it down next to the posts.

Watson’s easy conversion put Cobar ahead 26-20.

Shortly after the Swans had an opportunity to level the scores again however as fatigue set in they fumbled the ball near the try line.

Sensing victory was theirs for the taking, the Cobar side kept on attacking while the Swans were forced to keep on defending.

Dunedoo had one final chance to hold off defeat after they received a penalty 30 seconds out from full time, but they couldn’t make it happen and the Roosters finished with the narrow six point win.

Cobar was well served by a number of their players including their Best & Fairest, Plater (who earned three points), Mackay (2) and Simon (1).

Playing in the Halfback position, Jim Delboux had a big game in attack and defence, as did Everett, Hillam, Davies, Watson and Ethan Black.

Roosters club president, Chris Deighton, made a guest appearance late in the second half after missing much of this season due to injury. He was pleased to be able to join the side to celebrate the win.

The Roosters will make the trip to Gulgong this Saturday and, while a win is expected (when they last met in Round 5, the Roosters won 54-10), Dunedoo should continue to hold top spot as their match this week is at home to the lower ranked, 7th placed, Coonamble.

Roosters triumph over top of the table team Cobar’s win over Dunedoo on Saturday has given the Roosters the psychological edge in the run up to the finals of the Christie & Hood Castlereagh Rugby League competition.

While Cobar may have narrowly won the Round 13 Castlereagh match 26-20 on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval, it didn’t however improve their ladder standings with Dunedoo and Cobar now both on 20 points but the Swans have top billing after for and against

calculations.

The gripping game between the competition’s two top teams was as expected, a fiery match, and resulted in two Roosters players doing stints in the sin-bin.

Slippery hooker, Thomas Plater, put first points on the board early in the match for the Roosters, sending a clear signal to the visitors that Cobar meant business.

At the 10 minute mark the Swans hit back with a converted try before the arm wrestle

continued.

In their haste to claim an ascendancy in the game, both sides squandered a couple of try scoring opportunities before Dunedoo crashed through the Roosters’ defence at the 30 minute mark and the subsequent conversion gave the Swans a 12-4 lead.

The visitors had the opportunity to extend that lead further after Cobar’s fullback Ash Davies was sent to the sinbin six minutes before half time after being penalised for holding in a tackle.

The Roosters luckily regained possession of the ball and their sustained attack resulted in a try to Tim Hillam three minutes out from half time.

David Watson’s conversion attempt was just short of the mark. At the half time break the Swans had a narrow 12-8 lead.

Going into the second half the Roosters continued to dominate possession until Davies was able to re-join the game shortly after the restart.

Less than a minute after his return Davies well and truly made an impact as he sprinted from halfway to dive over and score under the posts which made for an easy conversion for Watson to give the home side a narrow 14-12 lead.

Tempers flared which resulted in some pushing and shoving from both sides and, not long after, another Roosters player, Tristan Everett, was sent to the sin bin for a rough tackle.

This time Dunedoo made the most of the absence of a Cobar player and, with an overlap of numbers, they were able to score out on the wing.

The successful conversion gave them back the lead at 18-14.

The tough tussle continued with both sides continuing to make big, hard hitting tackles.

After receiving a penalty close to their line, Cobar’s First Grade Hooker, Tom Plater (with the ball), had another great game for the the Swans elected to kick and they extended Roosters to collect the Coach’s Best & Fairest points in their 26-20 win over Dunedoo on their lead to 20-14.
