Election is uncontested

Cobar Shire voters won’t go to the polls next month as only 11 candidates nominated for the 12 vacant positions in the upcoming Local Government elections.

NSW Electoral Commission Returning Officer for the Cobar Region, Vanessa Reschke, declared the election uncontested at last Thursday’s ballot draw and advised the 11 nominees will now be duly elected.

The 11 candidates will take up their positions as councillors on December 4 under section 311 of the Local Government Act 1993.

Eight of the current councillors will return with Crs Peter Abbott, Janine Lea-Barrett, Jarrod Marsden, Peter Maxwell, Julie Payne, Bob Sinclair, Harley Toomey and Kate Winders to serve for the next three year period.

Joining them are the new faces of Kaine Neale and Lillian Simpson, while a former Cobar Shire Councillor, Tony Chaplain, who served on council from 1995 to 2008, will return to take a seat in the Council Chambers.

One of Cobar Shire’s longest serving councillors and former mayor, Cr Peter Yench, did not seek re-election after previously declaring that he would stand again.

A by-election will now be needed to fill the vacant 12th position and is expected to be held within three months of the election being declared in December.

If more than one candidate nominates for the vacant position, an election will be held, if there is only one candidate, they will be duly elected. If there are no candidates, another byelection will be held until the position is filled.

Network opportunity for businesses Mayor says he’s disappointed with election outcome A business networking opportunity will be held in Cobar tomorrow with the Orana Opportunity Network holding an Industry Connection Series event at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.

The Orana Opportunity Network (O2N) was established by Regional Development Australia—Orana (RDA Orana) following broad based consultations in the second half of 2019.

O2N aims to support industry and business development for the Orana and Central West regions of NSW. RDA Orana Managing Director Megan Dixon said now more than ever, the Orana and Central West regions are the focal points for infrastructure, METS (Mining, Technology, Equipment and Services sector) and energy development opportunities.

“The region is home to 33 operating mines and highly prospective opportunities including commodities associated with modern hightechnology applications such as copper and critical minerals, including scandium, platinum group elements, cobalt, lithium, titanium, and zirconium.

“Along with this, there is significant public and private investment occurring in infrastructure driving the growth of our regions,” Ms Dixon said.

“These sectors provide a significant contribution to our region and there is a tremendous opportunity to support this sector further through the power of the O2N. “The O2N membership base incorporates all

industries and every sized business from the Orana and Central West regions, which includes the major mining centres of Cobar, Dubbo, Mudgee, Orange, Peak Hill, Parkes, Condobolin and Lightning Ridge. “ The aim of the network is to support the development of businesses across the region into growth and exports, improve sustainability and increase investment and connectivity.

“The O2N will also proactively promote the capability of member firms to business opportunities within and outside the region,” Ms Dixon said.

The network will provide member companies with the opportunity to take part in activities previously out of reach of smaller enterprises including training and development, knowledge sharing, networking, joint marketing initiatives, joint project bids, focused task forces, trade missions and tendering.

“Relationships with key bodies such as RDA Orana, AusIndustry, Trade Start NSW, Austmine, ICAA, METS Ignited, the NSW Energy & Resources Knowledge Hub (ERKH), NIER and the Foundational Partnership of the University of Newcastle provide the network with additional support, services and weight in the political and business arena.

O2N has been established with the generous support of the Australian Government Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Export Hubs program and RDA Orana.

Nominations for the Local Government elections closed last Wednesday and, in one respect, it was disappointing that Cobar Shire Council received only 11 nominations (including myself) for the 12 available positions.

In another sense, seven others from our current crop of councillors will be automatically re-elected and all have proven to be excellent councillors.

The three new faces/candidates appear to be keen and look the goods.

I look forward to working with them all.

It will now be necessary to hold a byelection to elect the final councillor. (The details of the by-election will be announced at a later date.)

At the next Ordinary Council Meeting on November 25, no economic decisions can be made as council is in ‘caretaker’ mode until the December meeting when the new Council will be officially declared.

At this meeting councillors will also elect a new mayor and deputy mayor to lead them for the next two years.

While I originally had no intention of standing for the position of mayor again, I feel that the COVID pandemic situation occurring over the past almost two years (which is the strangest event of my lifetime) may require the use of an old hand at the Council helm.

Cobar Miners Memorial short-listed for sustainability award The Cobar Miners Memorial grabs your attention as you drive into and out of town and it’s also grabbing attention further afield as a finalist in this year’s 2021 Sustainability Awards.

This year’s finalists represent the innovation, talent and foresight which continues to drive the Australian architecture and design industry forward.

Our memorial, located within the Cobar Miners Heritage Park, has been shortlisted in the Public, Urban & Landscape category (a building or facility or artwork which primarily services, or is used by the public).

It’s one of five projects that were shortlisted in this category with the other four being: Gosford Leagues Club Park, Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre, People Parkers (recycled plastic mobile parklet facilities for outdoor dining) and the Waterfall Valley Hut on the Overland Track.

Designed by architect Stephen Pearse, the Cobar Miners Memorial forms a central focus as part of a collection of artefacts and memorials.

“While modest in size, the entry scale is manipulated by simple forms and vertical steel blades of the entry portal.

“Its underground setting providing both sustainable outcomes and preserving the important green park land,” the award entry reads.

“The design provides a single room of 60m² under the earth mound.

“Visible from the highway and arranged on the site to capture the pedestrian entry from the carpark, the new building conveys symbolic references to the mining industry through simple form and material, respects the site with its earth and landscaped roof and provides paved forecourt for more formal gatherings of family and community on memorial service days.

“The memorial embraces you on entry to the park, with its tough in-situ concrete walls and the focus, the large steel plate entry portal.

“A minimal abstract expression of the mine head. Steel rusting, bolted, and braced both dramatic and curious to the passer-by.

“A steel spike piercing through the roof as a snorkel to the sky provides a natural vent for the space.

“Within the underground chamber, the stories are told, and the victims memorialised in the symbolic tag board of brass plaques.

“A poignant reminder of the fact that these miners did not tag off on the shift that day.”

Local photographer Klae McGuinness has captured some stunning photos of the miners memorial which form part of the nomination.

The winners of the Sustainability Awards 2021 will be announced tomorrow night as part of the Sustainability Summit digital conference.

Sam Farraway, a Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly, was in Cobar on Friday and caught up with Mayor Peter Abbott at the Cobar Miners Memorial. Mr Farraway was unable to make the memorial’s official opening in June and so took the opportunity to have a look when he visited last week. Mr Farraway congratulated Barry Knight, who headed up the build project, for all of his hard work, support, dedication and championing of the memorial on behalf of the local community. ▪ Photo contributed

A familiar face, Tony Chaplain, returns to Cobar Council

Tony Chaplain, who has previously served as a Cobar Shire Councillor from 1999 to 2008, will return to take a seat in the Council Chambers next month.

After a break of more than 13 years, a former Cobar Shire Councillor, Tony Chaplain, is set to return to Council.

Tony was one of 11 candidates who nominated to run for Council at the upcoming Local Government elections.

With 12 positions vacant and only 11 candidates, the election is uncontested and the 11 will automatically be elected.

Tony’s lived in Cobar since he was 13.

He went to Cobar High School, has worked in the mining industry for most of his adult life and chose to raise his family here.

Tony was first elected to Cobar Shire Council in 1999 from a group of 28 candidates. He joined what was a relatively new Council that only had three returning councillors, Cr Roger Jackson, Cr Lilliane Brady and Cr Peter Yench.

In 2002 he served for a term as deputy mayor to Mayor Brady and was popularly re-elected in 2004. He continued to serve on Council until March 2008 when he resigned his position.

“It’s always interested me to go back into Council and I think the time is right now,” Tony told The Cobar Weekly on Monday.

Tony thinks this time around he’s a bit wiser and will have more time to devote to the role.

“I have more time on my hands.

“Previously I was a construction superintendent but I’ve had a bit of a ‘tree change’ and changed my role at the mine.”

Tony said it was the closure of the CSA Mine

by Ashanti in 1998 that prompted him to first run for Council and it’s partly the current situation with mining that’s also prompted him to run again.

“A lot of small towns struggle a fair bit and have done for a while.

“I think we have a lot to offer in Cobar, not just with the mines’ longevity, but with a lot of other things,” Tony said.

“As you come into our town, physically you can see some real good changes, like in the main street and at the museum and the parks, the new footpaths and those sort of things.

“Sometimes it’s the little things, that you think might not make much difference, but they do and I think they’ve made a positive impact.

“It’s a credit to the previous Council.”

Tony said he thinks what he’s achieved in his professional life, his experiences with meetings and dealing with a number of different personalities over the years, coupled with his previous experience on Council, will all help with his next term on Council.

“I’m in the right mind set at the moment, a little bit older, and I have grandkids now.

“My lads were babies when I ran for Council previously. They’re grown men now and have their own children so there’s a bit more life experience to reflect on. Most of my family are still here in Cobar, my son and daughter and grandkids. I look at how my children have grown up and I look at the outside world and there’s a lot to offer in this small community.

“I think it’s untapped.”

Tony said this time in his role as a Cobar Shire Councillor he’s keen to pursue further avenues/services that will help to improve mental health in the community.

“I'm looking forward to working with the new group. It’s always a good mixture when you have experience and new ideas.

“I’m really hopeful that we can carry on some of the good work that’s been done previously by the Council,” he said.

Local artists work with a blank page Pause tomorrow

to remember

The Cobar Railway Station was busy again on the weekend when the Cobar Arts Council hosted a paper making workshop presented by local artist, Daphne Jermyn.

“A warm day, hands playing in water, an activity saving some of our resources by recycling paper and learning a new skill was enjoyed by all,” Daphne reported.

“Everyone took home a bundle of hand-made paper to write, draw or paint on.”

RSL NSW President Ray James is encouraging people to Remember to Remember and pause to reflect tomorrow with a minute’s silence at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.

Community members across the state are urged to respectfully attend a Remembrance Day ceremony hosted by their local RSL subBranch on November 11, a day that commemorates the signing of the Armistice agreement between German and Allied forces in 1918 – signaling an end to World War 1.

“Through the simple act of pausing for a minute’s silence at 11am, we can all come together to reflect and remember those who have given their lives in service to their country, those who have come home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve the country today,” Mr James said.

“Millions of Australians have personal connections to our nation’s significant military history, either as a current or former serving Defence member or as the relative of someone who served. Australia’s shared history binds us; it strengthens our sense of identity and unifies us.”

Importantly, Australians are encouraged to donate to the annual RSL Poppy Appeal to support veterans and their families by purchasing a poppy from local RSL sub-Branch volunteers or planting a poppy in the virtual Remembrance Day Garden.

“No matter how you choose to commemorate Remembrance Day, all we really ask is that you remember to remember.”

Government acquires far west land for National Parks The NSW Government has massively expanded their NSW national park estate with the recent purchase of two properties, Koonaburra Station near Ivanhoe and Avenel/Mt Westwood station near Broken Hill, which will add a combined 166,924 hectares.

Environment Minister, Matt Kean said these two purchases take the total additions to the national park estate to 520,000 hectares since August 2019.

“In just over two years we have added over half a million hectares to our park estate, smashing target after target and securing precious habitat and biodiversity for future generations. This latest expansion will conserve significant areas of critically important habitat types in western NSW that are not currently protected in the park estate,” Mr Kean said.

Both properties are significant in size, with the 121,390 hectare Avenel/Mt Westwood Station the second largest purchase by NPWS in the state’s history.

Koonaburra Station, situated on The Wool Track, 100km north east of Ivanhoe and 140km south west of Cobar, covers 45,534 hectares and contains ecosystems unrepresented, or poorly protected in the national park system. It contains two threatened ecological communities: acacia melvillei shrubland in the Riverina and Murray-Darling Depression bioregions (endangered) and Sandhill Pine Woodland in the Riverina, Murray–Darling Depression and NSW South Western Slopes Bioregions (endangered).

Featuring a vast network of water depressions (“melon holes”) providing important water sources for many species, it also supports habitat for at least 20 threatened animal species including the Major Mitchell cockatoo, Mallee fowl and the fat-tailed dunnart.

A comprehensive enhanced feral animal management program is to be implemented across the Park, including upgraded, fit-forpurpose fencing infrastructure which will assist in the regeneration of native vegetation and sequester significant volumes of carbon.

Boasting 355mm rainfall, Koonaburra has dual frontage to over 20km of Sandy Creek.

The entire station is watered by massive flood out systems – a dozen lakes, box cowls and meandering waterways.

Koonaburra Station once formed part of the giant pastoral lease Keewong Station established in the early 1800s which ran Merino sheep. It features some of the holding’s original buildings including the shearing shed, the original standalone and renovated meat house and the old harness and buggy shed.

Paroo Darling National Park is located approximately 50km to the north west, and Yathong Nature Reserve approximately 55km to the south-east.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler has questioned the Liberal-National Government’s need to purchase these properties.

He said the Government has doubled the amount of land they initially set out to acquire.

“The majority of these acquisitions have been agricultural land in the far west.

“As taxpayers, we rightfully deserve to be able to ask questions about these acquisitions namely, how much did you pay for it?” Mr Butler said.

“There’s been a few numbers kicking about,

none confirmed by NSW National Parks or the Minister, but the number most people settle on is $30 million for the last tranche of properties.

“It’s a huge amount of money and I don’t begrudge any landholder who willingly sells their property for getting a good price.

“What having a Government player in the property sales market has done is price young pastoralists out of the market. I know in previous sales to National Parks, the Government doubled the offers young farmers put on the table. It priced them out of the market.”

He said in an open market the highest bidder does have the right to win on the day but he argues “at what price to the local community?

“We know that pastoral properties on average put back half a million dollars annually into the local community, as a base. In good times that can rise significantly.

“There are jobs on the property and jobs in the local community for contractors and supply businesses. Overnight those jobs and customers have disappeared,” Mr Butler said.

He said while important ecosystems deserve to be protected, National Parks staff aren’t the only ones capable of such work.

“Graziers and farmers are great caretakers of our land,” he said.

I thank the support visibly shown to me by the community since the call of the election in July, postponement, and the recall to December.

I have had numerous conversations, received emails and a letter asking for clarification on my platform and suggestions on the best way forward for the Shire. The conversations have been interesting, some of the ideas unique and all worth pursuing.

The next step in the process is the election of a Mayor and Deputy Mayor by the 11 Councillors. This will occur at an Extraordinary Council Meeting in December (date to be confirmed).

The Mayor’s position has a workload including liaison with State and Federal Government bodies, ensuring the town and villages are equally heard, chairing the Council Meetings, working to open the Shire to new business and be the face of the Shire with all that entails.

The Deputy Mayor’s position works closely with the Mayor to ensure all duties are addressed and steps in when the Mayor is not available.

The Cobar community farewells a much loved mate An estimated crowd of 1,000 mourners gathered at Tom Knight Memorial Oval in Cobar on Friday to farewell Ethan Jack Black and celebrate his life.

The 25 year old was tragically killed in an accident on October 16.

At the service, Ethan’s eulogy was delivered by his sister Hayley Black, who described her little brother as a larrikin, a stirrer and also a reliable mate.

She said Ethan arrived late in this world “and when he was ready, of course” on January 3, 1996 at the Cobar District Hospital.

“The midwife who delivered E, told mum she’d had a beautiful, boof-headed boy.

“This beautiful boof-headed baby grew into a quiet, shy and funny boy,” Hayley said.

“A very particular little guy, Ethan liked what he liked.

“Ethan loved Fords and hated Toyotas and Holdens (never letting us park next to them down the street).”

He loved kicking the footy and going on trips to the river.

Ethan was quite a character and she recalled some of the antics he got up to as a young boy and then later as a teenager but she said, “you could never really be mad at Ethan”.

“Our boy of few words, grew into a chatty young fella and with much resistance and some encouragement he worked his way through St John’s Primary and Cobar High School.

“What E lacked in enthusiasm for Maths and English, he certainly made up for it in PE and sport.

“A very keen sportsman, E spent his younger years in junior cricket and rugby league.”

Hayley said he was a naturally talented sportsman and recounted that it would not be unusual for Ethan to play three different codes of football in one weekend.

He was always keen to have a run in most sports, in particular the Cobar senior cricket competitions and playing rugby league with the Cobar Roosters and Manildra Rhinos.

He excelled at both and, on the football field, he had a reputation of being very tough and was regularly seen to successfully take down an opposing player twice his size in a tackle.

“These sporting communities and clubs created an environment that fostered a lot of Ethan’s greatest qualities - respect, mateship and fairness, all mixed in with the perfect amount of cheekiness,” Hayley said.

“With previous career aspirations of being a lawn mower man or a cricket player for Australia, E was very excited to receive and accept an offer of an electrical apprenticeship at CSA mine in 2012.

“Despite having a term of school to go, he told mum he wouldn’t be attending term 4 and instead would be going to work with ‘Jonesy’ [Gary Jones, his grandfather] for a few months. He learnt a few tricks of the trade with Pop, and enjoyed plenty of good smoko’s

He commenced at CSA in 2013 and then continued working at the mine as a tradesman.

Hayley said in his eight years at CSA “he learnt a few more tricks of the trade and from what we’ve heard—he still enjoyed a good smoko or two!”

She said the few years that Ethan spent living with his grandparents, Wally and Kathy Black, was what the family joked as being “a fine balance between keeping them young or giving them a few more grey hairs, although we know they enjoyed every minute.”

“Our little social butterfly was a mate to all.

“Surrounded by good people, E had a beautiful knack for making friends that feel like family - and no matter how many times we wanted to roll our eyes at Toben [Mooney] or his other crazy mates, we take comfort in the bonds that Eth made - as we’ve inherited extra family members along the way.”

Hayley described her brother as “a loving partner to his beautiful Bethy”, Bethany Harland, who Hayley said “he truly adored”.

“A larger than life son, brother and family member—Ethan was many things to lots of people and there isn’t enough words to describe how deeply he’ll be missed.”

She said there are many beautiful, happy and funny memories of Ethan they will always remember and cherish.

As part of the service to celebrate his life, Ethan was honoured with a Farewell Haka performed by some of his Māori/Kiwi Roosters team mates and friends as “a show of respect for our little warrior”.

Dear editor, While Cobar has been built on a lucrative mining industry, I think the mining camp has the potential to rip the heart out of Cobar and will have adverse affects on community morale.

All work and no play isn’t good—a happy worker is a good worker.

When we had the eight hour shifts at the mines, our town was booming.

People were happy, they could play sport on weekends and be part of community events.

Back then we had eight cricket teams—Golf Club, RSL, Hellman’s Tank, Kerrigundi, Canbelego and Rugby Union.

In the winter we played soccer, rugby league and rugby union (who were all premiers in 1968) and we also had strong basketball and netball competitions.

Our Aussie Rules sides won a few games but the Victorian influence on the southern side of the competition were always stronger.

We also had indoor basketball and indoor cricket competitions.

Juniors from Under 8s to Under 16s had opportunities to also play a range of sports.

All had active committees made up of players, parents and mine managers—the likes of Jack Brady, Terry Palmer, Nick de Bruin (Snr), Richard Morland and Peter Lloyd.

Back then all the mine managers lived in town and it was obvious they had Cobar’s interests at heart.

Sadly our FIFO and DIDO workers don’t have the opportunity to participate in local sports and community activities.

I don’t believe a mining camp environment will help the situation.

Cobar VIEW Club’s annual Oaks Day luncheon gives locals an opportunity to dress up and celebrate each year. This year’s luncheon at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club was down a bit on numbers than previous years however the ladies who attended enjoyed their meal, a local trivia quiz and a poem rendition. Peak Gold Mines

CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE Nominations are open for appointment of community members to the Peak Gold Mines Consultative Committee.

The committee provides an independent forum for open discussion between Peak Gold Mine and local community representatives on information regarding the New Cobar Complex and Peak Complex mining operations.

We are looking for a mix of people who live locally or are members of a community group (e.g. sporting association or local business) to join our committee.

Your role as a committee member is voluntary.

Selection criteria: You will be expected to contribute constructively to committee discussions, attend four meetings a year, and communicate information about the New Cobar Complex and Peak Complex between the committee and the broader community.

Applications must be lodged by Friday December 3, 2021 and sent to the independent chairperson of the Community Consultative Committee.

The rain has been well received

Two lots of good rain falls over the past week have been welcomed by residents across the Cobar Shire as well as right around the state.

The highest rainfall was recorded in the west of the shire at Tilpa with Sylvie McNab recording 59mm Napunyah (58mm of that fell on Wednesday) and Liz Murray reports they received 43mm at Trilby Station.

The LeLievres had 44mm in their rain gauge at Yathonga in the Louth area.

Falls recorded in the north east of the shire were considerably less with the Franciscos at Carline recording 13mm and at Berangabah in the south west, the Sinclairs had 12.5mm.

We fared better in town with the Bureau of Meteorology recording a total of 29.4mm over the past week.

Cobar’s total rainfall to date this year is 378.6mm which is lower than the Bureau’s 2020 figures of 394.6mm to this time last year.

The good rain last Wednesday was followed by a mild day on Thursday with the mercury only reaching 28.5 degrees while on Friday it warmed up to a maximum of 30.4.

The weekend started off warm with a top of 34.5 degrees on Saturday before taking a dive on Sunday with the daytime temperature only reaching 20.3 degrees.

The start of the working week was mild with 28.1 the maximum on Monday.

The days ahead are expected to be partly cloudy and a high chance of more rain.

The predicted top for today is 30 degrees while tomorrow should reach 29 (and more rain); Friday should be mild with 23 degrees (and rain); while the weekend should be fine with 21 expected on Saturday and Sunday.

• Eva Halliger was the winner of the Cobar VIEW Club’s raffle at their Oaks Day luncheon on Thursday at the Golfie while Jean Poulter and Pam McGuinness took home the lucky door prizes.

• Staff at Cobar Primary Health Care centre have a new health focus this month and they will be concentrating on hair, facial hair in particular, as they support Movember, men’s health month. The annual event encourages men to grow their moustaches to help raise awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s suicide.

• Good on Ya to Mel Proudlove and her Minions who did a fantastic job with a working bee at Tom Knight Memorial Oval last week getting the grounds ready for Ethan Black’s farewell. (Aunty Mel and Kingsley also cleaned up afterwards). And well done to the young Roosters players who handed out food and drinks during the wake.

• We’ve heard a lot of comments that it was disappointing that Cobar Shire Council only received 11 nominations for the 12 vacant positions in the upcoming Local Government elections. Some have labelled it as “a lack of interest” or is it that local residents are happy with the current group of councillors who have been representing them over the past five years? It seems there was a lot more interest in running for Council at past elections. In 1999, 28 candidates nominated to contest the 12 positions; 23 candidates stood at the 2004 election; 20 names were on the ballot paper in 2008; and 16 local residents lined up for the 2016 elections. Things were however a bit different in 2012 with only 12 candidates nominating for the 12 vacant positions and so all were duly elected.

• Did you spot our front page photo this week of the Glencore CSA Mine’s donation to the Cobar Little Athletics Club to help them purchase their new high jump mats? CSA’s gen-

mats are “very soft” after he personally tried them out. We note Peter has a pretty good high-jump technique and easily cleared the bar on his first attempt!

• How good do Council’s public facilities of Ward Oval, Drummond Park and the Heritage Park all look at the moment? The tender loving care they receive from Council’s Parks & Gardens staff was given a “natural helping hand” last week with some very good rainfall.

• The Cobar Little A’s committee members were thrilled on Monday to learn of a further relaxation of COVID restrictions concerning outdoor sport. Now at their competition nights, parents and helpers no longer need to QR code sign in, COVID marshals don’t have to wear those hot vests and the committee no longer is required to exclude unvaccinated adults.

• We hear the Cobar Business Association’s announcement last week about their partnership with Glencore CSA Mine and Sandvik for this year’s Christmas Street Parade has gotten a lot of people excited, including a few more mining related companies who are keen to join this year’s parade.

• Well done to Cobar’s Stephanie McDonnell who is currently working at Dubbo Health Service as an Aboriginal Health practitioner and recently won the Allied Health Assistant/ Support/Technician of the Year award!

Wellness Coordinator Cobar Suicide Prevention Program NSW Outback Division of General Practice LTD The NSW Outback Division of General Practice (ODGP) is a health service provider working to improve the health of people living in the outback shires of Cobar, Bourke, Brewarrina, and Walgett. The NSW ODGP manages a variety of health contracts focusing on early intervention, prevention of disease, chronic disease management, mental health care, healthy lifestyle programs and health promotion.

The ODGP also operates the Cobar Primary Health Care Centre (CPHCC) which is a highly functioning General Practice consisting of 3 Doctors, Practice Nurses, Allied Health Professionals and other visiting health services.

ODGP is funded by the Western NSW PHN to deliver the Suicide Prevention Program in Cobar and currently has a vacancy for the position of Wellness Coordinator based at the CPHCC. The role provides the Wellness Coordinator with the opportunity to work with the Cobar community and services to plan and deliver initiatives based on locally identified needs, and this includes training, promotion and awareness activities designed to develop capacity, promote wellness and build resilience.

Certificate 3 or 4 qualifications or highly relevant experience in the field of Mental Health or Social Work is desirable, however, applications are invited from anyone who is passionate about suicide prevention and is willing to undertake training and on-the-job experience. Now your super Have a say on Voluntary Assisted Dying follows you As part of the most significant suite of reforms to superannuation in nearly 30 years, the Morrison Government is helping to safeguard Australians’ retirement by ensuring their superannuation follows them when they change jobs.

From November 1, where an employee has an existing superannuation account, that account will be ‘stapled’ and will follow them when they change jobs.

This means employers will now pay super contributions into their new employee’s existing super account unless the employee nominates a different account.

These changes will end the creation of unintended multiple accounts every time individuals change jobs.

Every year around 850,000 duplicate accounts are created.

Treasury has estimated that stopping the creation of millions of unintended multiple accounts over the next decade will boost balances in super by about $2.8 billion by avoiding duplicate fees and lost returns.

Employers can find out more about their new obligations and how to comply at ato.gov.au/stapledsuperfund.

These changes also implement recommendation 3.5 of the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry and build on measures already introduced through the Your Future, Your Super reforms, including the annual performance test and the YourSuper comparison tool.

The tool can help new employees to compare the performance and fees of MySuper products and choose the fund that is right for them.

The Your Future, Your Super reforms are estimated to save Australian workers $17.9 billion over 10 years.

Through these reforms, the Morrison Government is strengthening the superannuation system and making it work harder for all Australians by reducing waste and maximising retirement incomes.

Members of the community are invited to have a say on the NSW Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill currently being considered by the NSW Legislative Assembly.

The NSW Upper House has referred to the Standing Committee on Law and Justice an inquiry into the provisions of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021.

The bill seeks to: enable eligible persons with a terminal illness to access voluntary assisted dying; establish a procedure for, and regulate access to, voluntary assisted dying; and establish the Voluntary Assisted Dying Board to oversee matters relating to voluntary assisted dying.

If the bill passes the NSW Legislative Assembly, it will then go to the Legislative Council for consideration.

The Chair of the Law and Justice committee, the Hon Wes Fang MLC, has called for community input.

“The committee recognises the public interest in this inquiry, which will allow community members to have their say on this important and deeply felt issue.

“The committee's report is intended to inform the Upper House’s consideration of the bill,” Mr Fang said.

The committee’s reporting date is the first sitting day in 2022.

This date will become known when

the House adopts the 2022 sitting calendar this month.

There will be three public hearings for this inquiry next month.

Cobar Swimming Club’s race secretary, Bec Wyllie, said she was proud of the efforts of the Cobar swimmers.

“All of the swimmers did an amazing job considering they have only been back in the pool for a few weeks and COVID restrictions have prevented club nights from starting back at the usual time,” Bec said.

As the dust settles

Although the weather wasn’t favoured by golfers last week, the actual course has welcomed the much needed rain to settle the dust.

The only game played in the Ladies competition was Saturday’s Stableford round with 12 participants taking part.

Glenda Peebles was declared the winner with 38 points (and another drop to her handicap).

Fraser puts Cobar on the golfing map with Gutfill Cup win A dozen Cobar golfers were involved in the Gutfill Cup competition last week which was played on the mid-north coast in dry, sunny conditions, away from Cobar’s highrainfall environment.

Much drama unfolded as the final days of the week-long competition came to a gripping conclusion with the last day of play at the Kempsey Golf Course.

(While in Kempsey, no doubt the Cobar players would have taken the opportunity to fulfill a life-long dream and visited the Slim Dusty Centre.)

Stewart Fraser finally emerged from the shadow of his two boys, Alec and Mark, to win something meaningful without their help.

Stewart timed his run beautifully coming home with 46 stableford points on the final day to take out first place.

Cobar Men’s Golf captain Peter ‘China’ Brien, a player of real skill, on the other hand, made his move a day too early.

Having to play off a seven handicap, he finished three shots behind for third place overall.

Once again, highly talented golfer Garry Wilkin was a little disappointing, and seemingly overwhelmed by the occasion, he finished well down the leader board.

The Cobar players all had a good time while on tour, and would have enhanced Cobar’s reputation as a town of well-behaved sportsmen!

Second place went to Robbie Cummins on 35 points. His golf must have improved as he is now on a 12 handicap.

Jason Foster beat Max Phillips on a countback for third place after both came in with 34 points.

In the Nearest the Pins competition, Marsden won on the 3rd and 7th holes and Clive Jones won the 8th and 15th.

The 11th hole prize was not won.

The mid-week competition will be played today while on Saturday the course will be busy with the Inter Mine Golf Challenge, a three-person Ambrose event that attracts golfers of all abilities.

Yabbies form guide Only eight swimmers (and a couple of timekeepers) made it to the pool on Tuesday night for the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club event after a day of Melbourne Cup celebrations.

Despite carrying a bit of extra weight, race favourite Murray Harland was first past the post in the opening 30m handicapped freestyle event.

Harland finished within 0.22 seconds of his nominated time to claim the Yabbies cup (stubby holder) ahead of the in-form Jason Toomey who was a neck behind in second place with 0.25.

The pacemaker, Chris Powell, was further back in third spot with 0.32 off his time.

On the bridle, Powell picked up the pace in his next race to win the 50m freestyle handicap with 0.37 seconds off his nominated time.

After pulling out the whip, Matt Harland finished in second spot with 0.59 and champing at the bit in third place was Murray Harland with 0.68 off his time.

The Harland connections once again featured in the graded race, the 100m swim and a photo finish was almost needed.

Matt Harland was eventually declared the winner with 0.62 off his nominated time while Murray Harland was two lengths behind in second spot with 0.69.

Scott Toomey was a further furlong away in third place after he finished 0.84 seconds outside his nominated time.

High scoring touch games

Three high scoring games and a draw were played out in the Cobar Junior Touch competition last Thursday at Ward Oval.

Both of the Juniors games were ‘try-fests’ with Red winning their match 12-10 over Yellow and the Bluebottles finished as 10-6 victors in their game with Orange Blazers.

Charlie Nicholson (Red) and Billy Watt (Yellow) were the top scorers for their respective teams with both finishing the match with four tries each.

Billy shared in the match’s Best and Fairest points along with Red’s Rowdy Barton and his Yellow team mate Maddison Jeffery.

The Bluebottles made the most of their female players to help them to their 10-6 win over Orange. With female tries worth double points, touchdowns by Chloe Griffiths, Harpa Martin and Ella Oborn helped the Blue side to their win.

In the Seniors competition, Kingspan Blue ran out as 16-7 winners over the Yellow Waringahs side.

Waringahs’ Tadgh McMullen was the top try scorer for the match with five tries (four of which were scored in the second half).

It wasn’t however enough to win them the match as Kingspan Blue shared the try-scoring among nine of their players to finish with their big nine point win.

Kingspan’s Oisin McMullen and Megan Giurin shared the game’s Best and Fairest points with Waringahs’ Sarah Nicholson.

After the scores were locked up at 3-all at half-time, the other Seniors game between Green Geckos and Blue Warriors was still tied at full time and finished in a 5-all draw.
