Health hearing to be held in Cobar Cobar has been confirmed as one of six rural towns where the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry will hold hearings as part of Rural and Regional Health Inquiry.

Shadow Minister for Health Ryan Park said Labor welcomed the Parliamentary Inquiry conducting hearings in many of the affected communities.

Mr Park said the announcement came after more than 700 people from regional and rural communities made harrowing submissions to the Inquiry, highlighting a system that is overstretched, under-resourced and plagued by chronic doctor shortages.

He said having hearings held in regional and rural locations will provide a holistic response to the issues faced by these communities.

“This is an important opportunity for rural and regional communities to share their experience and stories and inform changes to healthcare across the state,” Mr Park said.

“The Government’s left rural and regional communities behind with less access to services and declining health outcomes.”

Shadow Minister for Rural Health Kate Washington said a number of shocking revelations have already come to light before the hearings have begun.

“Towns without doctors, hospitals without bandages and people without the care they need are just some of the devastating stories we’ve heard so far,” Ms Washington said.

“This is why we fought for an inquiry.

“It is about giving people a voice, and we’ll keep fighting because our regional communities deserve better. I hope the Government is listening to what is really happening in rural and regional NSW.”

Vandalism upsurge

Local fundraising for Red Nose CSA Senior Mining Engineer, Owen Wells has shaved off his beloved beard (and his hair) in an effort to raise funds for the Red Nose Grief and Loss support group.

Owen’s CSA teammates are in full support of his efforts and yesterday helped him to reach a total of $7,400.

Owen, who has worked at the CSA Mine for the past six and a half years, was prompted to fundraise for Red Nose Grief and Loss after he and his wife Toni suffered a miscarriage last year.

“On being discharged from hospital we were not given any information or details of where we could find support - we were just told ‘you can go home now’. We felt lost,” Owen said.

He said it was friends that directed them to Red Nose Grief and Loss for help.

“Red Nose offer great support for parents and families affected by pregnancy and infant loss.”

Owen said one of the best pieces of advice they received at the time was that they were not alone.

“Nothing’s going to fix the individual pain or the loss of what could have been but there is some relief in knowing that you are not by yourself and you haven’t done something wrong.

“To honour the little baby we loved but never got to meet, the money donated to ‘Owen's Beard Chop’ will be used in Red Nose’s brochure program,” Owen said.

“Their aim is to have information on their support readily available in all hospitals and

doctors offices across Australia.

“The goal is that anybody unlucky enough to suffer through a miscarriage will be immediately provided with the details on where they can find support.”

Owen pledged that if he reached $5,000 (which he exceeded last Tuesday) he would shave his head and his beloved beard which, after five years of growth, was “wizardly”.

CSA hosted two barbecues for staff to help Owen in his fundraising efforts.

He said the barbecues not only helped with his fundraising but also gave people the opportunity to talk about the loss felt from a miscarriage.

“I’ve had lots of challenging conversations with others affected since this was announced.

“Hopefully the money can go some way to supporting people, so they feel more sure in having conversations,” Owen said.

Last week Owen had the first chop with his workmates getting to choose the hairstyle that he would keep for a week.

He got lots of interesting comments on his new hairstyle but told anyone who laughed that “they better be donating”.

Owen said he appreciated the support from CSA by hosting the barbecues and for also “tolerating the less than professional hair style for the week”.

“We are going to leave the donations open till mid month, if anyone wants to contribute further,” Owen said.

One of the most concerning problems facing Cobar lately is the upsurge in vandalism.

Whether it be attacks on the racecourse or at Ward Oval, this style of antisocial behaviour costs the ratepayers valuable funds which would be better spent on real needs for the community.

Vandalism to me is the product of idiocy, no one wins, neither the perpetrator nor the victim which makes one wonder why it occurs.

There are a group of young people in the 10 –17 year old age group that have been observed hanging around the main street corners and, while these people may have nothing to do with the vandalism, it is not a good look for the town as a whole. There is a line of thought that perhaps the temporary closure of the ‘Youthie’ leaves some of the younger generation without an outlet and as such, some of our more enterprising staff with the help and assistance of members of the NSW (Cobar) Police Force are investigating setting up a temporary solution.

Construction of the reservoir roof replacement has begun. This will fix corrosion issues in the current reservoir. There may be some minimal disturbances for anyone going to Fort Bourke Lookout, but when there are major disturbances expected, we will notify the community as soon as possible.

A Councillor workshop will be held tomorrow which will be where we discuss a number of items in detail before passing or moving any motions at a Council meeting.

Dedication to former Cobar police officer Sgt Richardson Former Cobar Police officer, Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson, who was killed in the line of duty on March 5, 2016, was honoured on Friday with the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District multipurpose training room named in his honour.

During his 18-year policing career, ‘Richo’ and his wife Margaret were stationed in Cobar between 2005 and 2010.

Both were heavily involved in a number of local community groups and sporting organisations in their almost five years of living in Cobar.

After leaving Cobar, Senior Constable Richardson was promoted to Sergeant and, at the time of his death was serving as part of the Port Stephens Local Command.

He was killed in 2016 when the police car he was driving crashed into a tree in Allandale.

At the time, Sergeant Richardson had been driving to assist colleagues who were involved in a pursuit.

Richo was the recipient of numerous police awards including a Region Commander’s Commendation for Bravery and a posthumous Commissioner’s Commendation for Service.

On the 5th anniversary of his passing last Friday, Sergeant Richardson was remembered by his final command with the station’s multi-purpose training room being named in his honour.

The light sprinkle of rain we received in town on Monday morning wasn’t enough to register in the Bureau of Meteorology’s rain gauge this week.

It was warm and sunny all week with Monday’s top of 35.5 degrees the hottest day.

The forecast for the week ahead is looking promising for rain with the chance of a shower this afternoon.

It’s looking even better for rain tomorrow with the Bureau predicting between 8 to 15mm of rain.

Friday and Saturday will be sunny and warm with 34 while Sunday is expected be much cooler with only a maximum of 25.

Ang Galloway is thrilled to be back in the café business Angela Galloway is thrilled to be back in business with the doors of her new eatery opening today in the main street.

Ang had a dream to open a business in 2019 and, with her then business partner Mandy Dell, the pair opened Ang and Mandy’s cafe in September that year.

But in 2020 the COVID pandemic put paid to

the pairs’ plans.

After only being in business for seven months, they had to close the doors in April 2020.

“Nobody knew what was happening or what was going to happen,” Ang recalls.

“We had some staff that were leaving when borders were closing because they wanted to

be with family members and yeah we just thought we’ll close for a little bit until things calm down. But we didn’t expect to be closed for this long,” she said.

Ang said as they’d lost the use of the dining room and could only do take away it just wasn’t financially viable for them to stay open.

They’d only been in business for a relatively short time and so were not eligible for any of the government subsidies such as Jobkeeper.

“The plan was to close for a few months and we thought we’d be right.”

She said things with COVID were uncertain for a long time and it would have been hard to re-open and then have to close up the business again if restrictions got worse.

Ang however hung on to the idea that she would re-open and she started saving to be able to once again make her dream a reality.

“I missed the people, the public, the friendly faces you see every day.

“I got that bored I started painting the inside of the house!”

Ang said running the café had given her a real “sense of joy”.

“It was nothing but positive feedback that we got all the time from the café so I kind of miss knowing that I was doing something good for the people in Cobar.”

This time Ang is venturing out on her own.

“I did learn a lot from last time we were open.

“I fully don’t 100 per cent know how to manage a business but I’m just going to have a crack and see how I go,” Ang said.

They’ve been working with Ang over the past couple of months getting the shop ready to reopen.

Ang said they will basically have the same menu as before with crib meals to cater for miners, as well as past favourites such as their battered fishthat were popular with locals and visitors.

Ang also has plans for some new menu items including some delicious desserts.

“They might not be there on the first day we open but we’ve got lots of ideas, too many Dine In or Take Away ideas!”

Ang said they have had to shorten their opening hours.

Council shares speaker with the public Round 2 of the Former explosives expert Darren Flanagan will be the guest speaker at a public event next Thursday night.

Mr Flanagan is to be Cobar Shire Council’s Health and Wellbeing Day speaker and Council is inviting the public to go along to his talk.

Having been one of the explosives experts who was at the forefront of the Beaconsfield Mine rescue in 2006, Mr Flanagan has an interesting story to tell.

He earned the nickname ‘The Gun’ nationally through his critical role in mine disaster after he was requested to prepare, charge, and eventually fire the explosives that released the two men who were trapped nearly 1km beneath the

surface of the collapsed Tasmanian gold mine.

Following this harrowing event, Mr Flanagan said he’d been tremendously affected by the ordeal and had to learn to work through the pain and trauma it had left him with.

He decided to share his story with others and now travels throughout Australia as a highly respected motivational speaker.

During his talk, Mr Flanagan speaks about the enormity of the rescue mission itself; the importance of teamwork, risk management and workplace safety; as well as his personal struggle with post-traumatic stress following the event. His presentations are passionate and professional with a mix of humour as well.

Reader shares their story of opioids Dear editor After reading the letter appearing in the paper last year, written by a local lady, it inspired me to share my story also.

My story begins nearly 40 years ago when I initially started taking pain tablets for migraines. I was later prescribed opioids and have been taking them for the past eight years to help combat the chronic pain associated with three major operations.

I did not like to ask my doctor to prescribe them, and I certainly did not like taking so much medication.

At my worst I was using opioids three times a day to ease the continual pain. The toll mentally as well as physically living with persistent pain was so hard.

On one of my visits to the doctor’s surgery, Dr Sanjay asked me to think about the effects

opioids were having on my body and reminded me that it was my choice to control what tablets I need for my pain relief.

I spoke with my ever-supportive husband about my concern of what I’d been doing to my body and we decided together, under the guidance of Dr Sanjay, that I would give up all pain tablets. This was not an easy decision to make, but I was determined to at least try.

I gradually cut back on opioids. It took me three months. Each day that I did not take them made me feel stronger. The pain did not get any worse and when I finally took my last tablet, the pride I felt in what I had accomplished was indescribable.

I encourage people to give it a try. It will not be an easy journey, but my pain did not get any worse from not taking opioids. It’s worth it in the long run. —Name withheld by request

Lip Sync battle

Following on from the success of their 2019 Lip Sync Battle for Netball which raised almost $8,000 for the Cobar Netball Association, winners Pumpettes, will be back to defend their title this year.

The Pumpettes netball team’s “over the top” choreographed 2019 ‘We are the Champions’ performance (which included some amazing special effects) was a winner with the judges and earned them the “Big Lips” trophy.

Team captain Kelly Fairbank is confident Pumpettes can win back-to-back titles as they have again this year signed award winning choreographer Sosie Barton to help with their routine. (The fact that they haven’t actually decided on a song yet is just a minor detail!)

Back this year also is Dolly Parton, but in no way shape or form does this Dolly Parton resemble Bryce Moore’s Dolly who wowed the crowd in 2019.

This year’s Dolly is destined to get more comments along the lines of “Ummm how did they do that?”

80s music is the choice of the Cobar High School staff troupe who are planning to reprise a huge hit from 1980 that stayed at No 1 for six weeks on the Australian music charts.

(Even if you weren’t born in the 80s, you’ll be able to sing along to this catchy hit.)

St John’s School’s staff of entertainers have looked to the silver screen for their inspiration and their song of choice was a massive hit from a movie blockbuster made in 2012.

The Cobar Public School staffcast have yet to make a final decision on their act but it’s believed they have narrowed it down to something by AC/DC, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Stevie Nicks or David Bowie.

The WSPA Teens, who you just know will have some great dance moves, will be hard to beat but it’s expected their main competition of the night will come from the WSPA Senior Citz group, that’s if none of them break their hips during rehearsals in the leadup.

There’s a couple of guest performers this year, one of which is completely unknown (except to the organisers) while the other act is a hit from a popular Swedish quartet that has performed at numerous festivals.

The battle to find Cobar’s 2021 Lip Sync champions gets underway at the Golfie on March 27.

Cobar’s Masonic Lodge keen to recruit more members Freemasons have a reputation of being “a secret society” and over the years the Cobar Masonic Lodge members have come in for that sort of criticism as well.

Local dentist Charlie Thompson is a Cobar Lodge No 97 member and is keen to dispel the “secret society” rumours.

“The Cobar Lodge currently has 12 members and there are no secrets as to who we are!” he said.

Charlie is currently the Lodge secretary and said he’s just part of a group of men whose aim is “to make good men better” “The activities of the Lodge locally are by and large charitable in nature. You can find us every second Saturday selling raffle tickets at the Memorial Services Club, the proceeds of

which from time to time are donated to local projects and organisations,” Charlie said.

He’d like to see more local men come forward to join as being a Lodge member is all about learning how you can improve yourself.

“This then flows on to our day-to-day lives and hopefully by that influence it will then lead to a better community, society, etc overall,” Charlie told The Cobar Weekly.

He said Lodge can provide men with a good support system.

“Men are a pretty stubborn bunch at the best of times and on occasion there may be something in their lives which they may be struggling with. Whether directly in the form of advice, or indirectly, quite often the life experiences of your fellow members will give you

that answer.

“Or at the very least a sympathetic ear!”

Charlie said.

He said a member can commit to as much time or as little as they choose.

“We meet once a month on a Saturday night and have casual catch-ups on most Thursdays.

“At other times we run a roster to assist with fundraising endeavours for local organisations, but this is not compulsory by any means,” Charlie said.

This year marks the 140th anniversary of the Cobar Lodge which was formed in 1881 with the first meeting held in the Court House.

Later towards the end of the century the Lodge built the Town Hall/Cinema building and this was its home until 1972 when Cobar Shire swapped them to the old town Band Hall which is their current home.

A girls night out

It was International Women’s Day on Monday, a day to celebrate the social, political, economic and cultural achievements of women.

Cobar’s celebrations are however occurring a bit late this year with local ladies invited to go along to an event at the Services Club next Wednesday night to mark the occasion.

The 2021 theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Choose to Challenge’ with three local women invited to speak at the Cobar event to talk about the choices they have made in their careers and lives.

The speakers include: Anni van der Westhuizen—owner of three local busy retail businesses; Seigrid Peters—teacher/artist/ businesswoman and mother of three young boys; and Laura Barnes—a young woman who has an interest in the environment and works on a mine site.

The night will be an opportunity for local women to network with others, meet new people and find out how these three women, who have each been successful in their fields, choose to challenge and celebrate women’s Some of the Cobar Lodge No 97’s current members Peter Lawrence, Brad Lennon and achievements.

He was only just in front of his 79 year old grandmother in second place and Murray Harland was third! That’s not bad from a field of 250 swimmers.

• We hear that Brad Lennon has recently been doing some “stunt” work for an opera remake being shot in the Broken Hill area.

We believe that Brad’s name will be in the credits when the movie comes out later this year.

• Condolences are extended to the family and friends of the late Mal Webber who recently passed away. Mal lived in Cobar for many years working for Alan Kitson and Henry Wilson and had many friends still living in Cobar.

• Well done to Cobar Clay Target Club shooter Matt Harland who recently won the 25 Target Handicapped event in Orange. In the shoot-off Matt shot a total of 80 targets straight with the runner-up shooting 79.

Cobar’s 100th Parkrun

The Cobar Parkrun fraternity celebrated their 100th Parkrun event in glorious conditions on Saturday morning. The group of 19 ran, jogged and walked the 5km course with six participants recording new personal best times. One of the group was a first-timer while a number of others made their first appearances back after the forced break for COVID.

Mermaids rise to the challenge

Zoë Egan swam exactly to her nominated time at the Mermaids women’s social swimming club event on Monday night at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

It’s the first 0.00 result for a Mermaid this season.

Egan rose to the challenge thrown down last week by The Cobar Weekly when we pointed out in the Mermaids report that while a number of Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club members had achieved spot on swims this season (two Yabbies had 0.00 results last week) none of the Mermaids members had yet achieved the feat.

At Monday night’s swim Egan’s 0.00 finish gave her the win in the 30 metres handicapped

freestyle event ahead of Kathryn Taylor with 0.25 seconds off her nominated time.

Jordan Cappai was third with 0.29.

Egan had the best result in the 50 metres event also after swimming to within 0.66 seconds of her nominated time.

Cappai was second (0.88) and back in third place was Elodie Manns with 2.03 seconds off her time.

Cappai spoiled Egan’s clean run of the night when she took out first placed honours in the 100 metres event.

Cappai finished 3.19 seconds outside her time while Egan had well underestimated her ability and swam way too fast to finish 17.75 seconds quicker than her nominated time.

The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club bowlers hosted the Nyngan Bowling Club in Round 5 of the 2021 Pennants season on Sunday.

Daniel Holt, Gerard Livingston, John Daly and Tony Brown were too good for there opponents winning 22-19.

Greg Read (who was voted as the weekly winner of the prestigious ‘Giraffe award’) teamed up with David Knight, Shane Carter and Dean McLeod to salvage a 17-all draw in their game.

Unfortunately the team of Craig Grimmond, Kyle Roberts, Barry Bargwanna and Aaron Finn were eventually well beaten in their game, despite only trailing by two shots midway through.

Overall Nyngan won by 58-53 on the big board.

Cobar travel to Bourke next weekend for the final game of the pennant season.

In social bowls on Sunday, a hotly contested game was played.

Six swimming records smashed

Raymond Jones smashed six swimming records at Cobar High School’s annual swimming carnival recently.

Among them was a record that had been held since 2006.

In the Boys 17+ 50m Breaststroke event Raymond set a new record time of 38.18 seconds breaking the previous record of 40.80 set

by Tyler Roberts.

Raymond also set new records for the Boys 17+ 50m freestyle (27.20), 50m backstroke (31.80), 50m butterfly (29.97), 200m Individual Medley (2.38.27) and the 100m Freestyle (1.01.92).

His efforts helped him to finish the day as the 17+ years Boys age champion.

In the other age divisions the Boysage champions were: Under 13s Axel Fairfull, U/14s Henry Knight, U/15s Toby Greenwood and U/16s Tadhg McMullen.

The Girls Age Champions:were Under 12s Jasmine Livingstone, U/13s Megan Giurin, U/14s Maddie Bruce, U/15s Katie Nicholson, U/16s Neve Carter and 17+ Bree Martin.

Great Cobar was the Champion House for 2021 finishing with a tally of 737 points, followed by Chesney on 657, Fort Bourke 648 and Occidental finished with 398 points.

Eight make a start

Eight players fronted the starter on Saturday in the Men’s Golf opening day of the season.

Jared Starr was a comfortable winner on the day finishing with 35 stableford points followed by Jason Foster and Greg Clark on 29 points each to fill out the minor placings. Starr won the Nearest the Pin prize on the 11th hole.

New golfer Jason Hampel wasted no time in making his mark in Sunday’s monthly medal competition taking out the event with an impressive score of 41 points.

The consistent Jared Starr finished in second place with 37 points on a countback from Mark Fraser in third. Fourth was Piers Brown.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Mark Fraser (2), Jason Hampel, Alec Fraser and Garry Wilkin.

This Saturday an individual stableford will be played and on Sunday a 4 Ball Aggregate Stableford will be contested.—Three Aces

Rugby 7’s comp The Cobar Camels were one of eight men’s teams to compete at the Parkes Rugby 7s competition on Saturday.

The Parkes Boars club hosted men’s and women’s teams from Forbes, Wellington, Mudgee, Wagga, Tumut and Cobar.

The Cobar side won one game and lost two including their semi final against the ultimate winners, Parkes Fiji.

The Camels report it was “a great day of team building, fitness and some good fun”.

Training has commenced for the 2021 Western Plains Rugby Union season which is due to kick off at the end of next month.

Cobar’s junior representative netball teams have been given a boost with the donation of equipment and uniforms under a new Netball NSW ‘Sister City Association’ arrangement with the Newcastle Netball Association. The agreement aims to help smaller rural clubs with things like umpire/coaching accreditation. The Cobar juniors have recently received some second-hand balls and uniforms from the Newcastle Netball Association. Club president Bethany Thomas said they are yet to meet with the Newcastle committee to discuss other ways where they can help. After listening to the community, Council has modified the restrictions to increase the time that sprinklers can be used to one (1) hour every second day; this is in line with the use of a hand-held hose. This will help people protect their gardens whilst being water wise.

Although we are not currently in drought, we still need to protect the water which we have available to ensure our water security. This has become necessary due to ongoing issues on the Nyngan to Cobar pipeline.

By everyone using water sensibly, we will ensure our ongoing water supply.

Council appreciates your patience as we continue to work on improving water security within Cobar and ensuring reliable water access for the community and local industries.

Cricket’s best of 2020/2021 season Tied touch game The Cobar and District Cricket Associationend of season presentations were held on Saturday night at the Services Club.

Rather than having winners from each individual competition, this season’s statistical awards were won by combining results from both the Twenty/20 and 40 Overs competitions which means most runs, wickets and catches were awarded from a combined tally of both competitions.

The Empire Billy Goats were the winners of the Dewar Cup Minor Premiers of the 40 Overs Competition, and alsowon the Bert Oldfield Cup and the Billy Manns Memorial Shield.

Nymagee were runners-up of the 40 Overs competition.

Jed Noonan won both the Ernie Toshack Player of the 40 Overs Grand Final and Player of the Twenty/20 Grand Final awards.

Ruthless Toothless won both the Minor Premiers 20/20 Competition title and the Collins Family Trophy as winners of the Twenty/20 competition with Tilpa runners-up.

Jay Egan was the Player of the Year for the 40 Overs competition.

Jake Harbison was named the Player of the Year for the Twenty/20 competition and also won the Steve Wetzel Memorial Cup for best All Rounder.

Harbison finished the season with the most

runs across both competitions and also the most catches.

Phar Nicholson won the Lionel Butler Memorial Trophy Award for U24 Player of the Year; Ryan Urquhart received the Mollie Collins Memorial Shield for the best U18 Player of the Year; Urquhart also took the most wickets across both competitions; and Robert Childs had the best bowling figures across both competitions.

James McClure was awarded the Paula Potter Memorial Trophy as the Player of the Year; Zach Broughton won the Glenn Spinks Shield Award for the Junior Player with Most Potential; and Kathy Harbison was presented with the Tony Chalker Memorial Clubman of the Year shield.

The Harry Marshall Memorial Award for Gentleman/Gentlewoman of Cricket was awarded to Mitch Holt; Trent Robertson won the Daddles Duck Award for most ducks in the season; and The John Potter Jnr Memorial Award for Representative Player of the Year went to Tristan Everett.

Five wicket hauls across both competitions and representative games were recorded by: Robert Childs with 5/8 in 40 Overs: Peter Lawrence 5/14 in T/20; James McClure 5/16 in 40 Overs; and Tristan Everett 5/13 in 40 Overs and 5/32 in Representative cricket.

Lady golfers are now back on course The long awaited start to the Cobar Ladies 2021 golf season didn’t quite go to plan with the golf course undergoing intense watering on Tuesday and Wednesday thus putting a ‘dampener’ on last Wednesday’s scheduled par game.

Then with a wedding on the middle of the course on Saturday, it meant a re-arrangement in the configuration of the 18 holes was needed so as to accommodate the wedding party as well as golfers.

The winner in Saturday’s stableford was Glenda Peebles with 35 points followed by Marlene Wynd (32), Narelle Kriz (30) and Fran

Samios with 29.

The Nearest the Pin winners on the 3rd hole were Narelle Kriz in A Grade, Tina Gordon for B Grade and Glenda Peebles in C Grade.

Sunday’s stableford attracted 10 players with Robynne Morton the winner with 34 points and she was the Nearest the Pin winner for A Grade on the 7th hole.

The runner-up was Fran Samios on 32 on a countback from Geraldine Francisco with Ann Dunn in 4th spot scoring 29.

The B Grade pin was not won as no-one in that division could stay out of the gutter or keep on the right fairway.

Glenda Peebles was the C Grade pin winner.

This week should start with a stroke round today.

Round 5 last Thursday marked the halfway point of the Junior Touch season.

The Seniors match between Blue Marlins and RND’s was always going to be a tough contest and, after 40 minutes of play, they couldn’t be split with a 6-all draw.

Troy Robertson for the RND’s was excellent in attack, defence and more importantly, leadership, which this week earnt him Best & Fairest three points. Zane Taylor and Oisen McMullen were difficult to contain in the middle with their rolls-ons earning them valuable metres in attack.

Marlins’ Zac Broughton made a number of breaks down the sideline resulting in three tries and two B&F points. Zac was assisted by Tadhg McMullen and Parker Cryer, while Sophie Clark had her best game of the season.

In the other Seniors game Green Beans recorded a good 10-7 win over Afta Midnight.

Kai Taylor was the Bean’s player of the match crossing the try line three times and picking up B&F three points. Maddie Bruce proved handy in all aspects of the game along with Tim Eves. Cora McKervey was able to pick up another try this week and added two points to her B&F tally for the season. Jayden Paul was as consistent as always picking up three tries and was strong playing a middle attacking game.

In the Juniors Orange Blazers defeated the Red Devils 8-4 with Aiden Hyland having his best game of the season. Jaxon Waugh proved elusive once again and Piper Allen and Harpa Martin were always available in supporting play. Lilly Fairfull showed great skill and technique and was rewarded with a B&F point while Gabriel Harris was an absolute standout picking up three B&F points. Dominique Sharpe was excellent in defence.

The Yellow Jackets dominated Blue Thunder in their fast-paced and entertaining game.

Cohen Nicholson picked up three B&F points for a great display of sportsmanship.

Yellow Jackets’ Kai McCosker and George McDonald added five tries each to their impressive season tallies, and Ella Oborn had an excellent game in both attack and defence.

Blue Thunder’s Phoebe Travis attempted to chase down every runaway try and team mate Tommy George was a standout with two tries and two B&F points.

In tomorrow’s Round 6 games, Blue Thunder take on the Orange Blazers and Red Devils play the Yellow Jackets in Juniors.

In Seniors, RND’s meet Afta Midnight and Green Beans come up against the Blue Marlins.—contributed

Big team of Yabbies compete at AIF National carnival A team from the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club competed at the 85th AIF National Swimming Carnival on the Gold Coast over the weekend.

Overall Cobar finished 4th in the Bill Lough Memorial Handicap point score with hosts Southport the winners.

Cobar was also second in the Jacaranda Perpetual Men’s Championships competition.

The Cobar relay team of David Mexted, Rob Dickerson, Shane Josephson and Paul Swainston finished second (with 0.62 seconds off their nominated time) in the 4 x 50 metre nominated time handicap relay for swimmers aged 30 - 59 years.

Also finishing second in the 6 x 50 metre championship relay was the Yabbies team comprised of Jason Toomey, Owen Small, Stuart Small, Cameron van Breugel, Ben Plush and Grant McDonald.

The competition was tough this year (in the 30 metres handicapped event there were seven 0.00 times recorded in the heats).

Among those that finished on the podium were: Stuart Small—3rd, Men’s Open Backstroke; Murray Harland—3rd, 55-59 Men’s freestyle 50 metres and 3rd 100metres handicapped; Owen Small—1st, Men’s 45-49 freestyle 50 metres; Stuart Small—2nd, Men’s 4549 freestyle 50 metres; Ben Plush—3rd, Men’s 40-44 freestyle 50 metre; and Cameron Van Breugel—1st Men’s 25-29 50 metre freestyle sprint (31.44 seconds).

Cobar club members Bill Fugar, Matt Harland, Grant McDonald, Greg Aird, Stephen Clark and Bob Clark however missed out on podium finishes.

In the Yabbies club event last Tuesday night at the Cobar pool, Bill Fugar was the stand-out swimmer with two firsts and a second place finish.

Fugar won the 30 metres handicapped freestyle event with a time of 0.10 seconds off his nominated time ahead of Cameron van Breugel with 0.16 and Tyler Roberts on 0.25.

Fuger’s time of 0.06 seconds off his nominated time narrowly gave him the win in the 100m swim just ahead of Paul Swainston on 0.09 and David Mexted was third with 0.13.

In the 50m swim, 0.06 was once again the winning time and this time it was recorded by Lucas Hardy.

All deadlines—2pm Mondays

Back in second place was van Breugel (0.28) while third was Chris Powell with 0.31.

Hardy and van Breugel teamed up to win the Brace Relay dolphin dive across the pool.

They finished within one seconds of their

nominated time.

Fugar and Swainston were further back in second place with 2.94 and then Powell and John Claus claimed third spot with 3.66 seconds off their time.

The force was with Empire

The force was definitely with the Empire on Saturday after they defeated Nymagee by two wickets in the 40 Overs senior cricket grand final at Ward Oval.

After they won the toss and elected to bat first, Nymagee should have heeded the advice: “Don’t underestimate the Force” of the Empire.

Their innings got off to disastrous start with Empire’s opening bowler Tristan Everett knocking over both of the Magpies’ openers.

Mitch Holt was clean bowled in the first over for a duck and Jade Buckman went shortly after for a seven runs reducing Nymagee to 2/14.

Stephen Nicholson and Phil Harley then came together at the crease and, when they shared in a 50-run partnership, it looked like Nymagee was starting to get on top.

Nicholson was however then dismissed for 34 runs off the bowling of Ryan Urquhart with the score at 3/64. James McClure joined Harley at the crease and together they once again steadied the innings until Empire threw the ball to unlikely hero, Jed Noonan.

Noonan forcefully ripped through the remainder of the Nymagee batting line-up taking six wickets and conceding just 20 runs in his seven overs.

First to go was Harley for 34 with the score now 4/99.

Nymagee then lost six wickets for just 18 runs as Noonan dismissed McClure (10), Matt Nicholson (3), Tony Polack (2), Rhys Lloyd (3) and Matt Bolam (0).

Nicola Harbison picked up the wicket of Peter Robinson, who went for four.

By the 33rd over Nymagee were bowled out for a total of 117.

Empire’s proven powerful batting line-up was not expected to be troubled chasing the low total.

Grand final games always create added pressure and Empire had a tough 10 over period to bat before the lunch break.

In that time Nymagee took two wickets with Empire opener Tom McKenna (3) caught on the boundary in the first over off Peter Robinson and Jay Egan was caught behind not long after for 15 off the bowling of Phil Harley.

By lunch, Empire was 2/38.

After play resumed, Empire lost five wickets for 27 runs with Harley and Anthony Robertson doing the damage with the ball.

Tarun Bheemireddy (16), Tadgh Waugh (9) and Jed Noonan (0) were bowled, and Ethan Black (0) and Jake Harbison (15) were out LBW. With their score at 7/65, Empire was in big trouble however their tailenders, David Watson and Tristan Everett, held their nerve and batted with composure. They took the score along to 117 to tie the game and it looked like Empire was home and hosed.

There was however one final twist left in the match when Tony Polack bowled Watson for 17 runs.

Needing only one run to win and with two wickets in hand, Tim Hillam successfully blocked Polack’s bowling attack until Polack put a wide down leg side to give Empire the extra run they needed to finally claim the win.

Everett finished on 34 not out.

Later that night Empire’s captain Ethan Black was pleased to be able to hold aloft the Bert Oldfield Cup and Billy Manns Memorial Shield at the end of season presentations at the Services Club.—contributed

The Force was with Empire

The Empire Billy Goats held out to win the 40 Overs senior cricket 2020/2021 season grand final game on Saturday. They beat the Nymagee Magpies by two wickets with two overs to spare. Nymagee won the toss and batted first but could only give Empire a target of 117 to chase after they were all out in the 33rd over. Empire bowler Jed Noonan ripped through Nymagee’s batting order to take 6/20. Empire’s powerful batting line-up then felt the added pressure of the grand final and Empire found themselves in big trouble at 7/65. Tail-ender Tristan Everett (34 not out) however helped to resurrect the Empire innings and they finished with a thrilling two wicket win. See Page 18 for a full report of the match.
