Camp owner takes Council to court New TAFE learning centre progressing

Three local residents who made submissions opposing the proposed expansion of the mining camp on the eastern edge of town, spoke of their objections in a conciliation conference on Monday.

Following Cobar Shire Council’s rejection last year of Rovest Holdings P/L’s plan to extend their mining camp, the company has now taken the matter further and are appealing the decision through the Land and Environment Court.

Council rejected Rovest’s development application (DA) to build an additional 20 units to accommodate a further 80 occupants which would bring the total capacity at the camp to 199 occupants.

Upon receipt of Rovest’s DA in August 2019, Council initially gave the submission much consideration.

Feedback from the community consultation on the proposed development brought in 67 written submissions opposing the development along with a petition of 1,950 signatures while just two written submissions were received in favour of the expansion going ahead.

Council then called for an independent review on the matter with independent planner, Robert Bisley, from City Plan in Newcastle, conducting an investigation.

In his May 2020 report to Council, Mr Bisley recommended the application to increase the accommodation not be endorsed by Council.

Mr Bisley concurred that while the applica-

tion did meet a number of State Environment Planning policies, it failed however to meet Council’s vision for the shire.

He disagreed with Rovest’s claim that the proposed development would have “a positive economic impact on the local area”.

Acting on the recommendation of Mr Bisley’s independent report, Council rejected the DA in June 2020.

In January this year Rovest took action to appeal the decision in the Land and Environment Court.

A confidential conciliation conference into the matter began on Monday between the two parties.

Three local residents, who made objections the development, were invited to speak of their concerns and, due to COVID restrictions, this was done remotely via a phone hookup.

The three were not privy to any of the other proceedings that went on.

Council’s Director of Planning and Environmental Services, Garry Rymann said it’s expected a court date will be set next week following a directions hearing on Monday.

He said he hoped a site visit will be included as part of the hearing (which is a normal part of the hearing process) however he said this may not be possible due to COVID restrictions.

He said ultimately the Land and Environment Court will make the final decision on whether to approve Rovest’s Development Application.

TAFE NSW is progressing on its delivery of Cobar’s new multi-million dollar Connected Learning Centre and multitrades workshop, which will significantly expand local education and training opportunities.

The concrete slab foundations for both the Connected Learning Centre and multi-trades workshop are now complete, with the steel structural frame and roof of the Connected Learning Centre also now assembled.

The new facilities are scheduled to open to students in early 2022.

Once opened next year, the centre will give students access to more personalised learning experiences, better access to teachers both on and off-site, simulated work environments, and relevant training for jobs of the future.

The new multi-disciplinary trades workshop is specifically designed to operate alongside the digitally enabled Cobar Connected Learning Centre, to deliver a range of hands-on courses linked to job outcomes, including in in-demand areas such as Manufacturing and Engineering.

Construction company, Renascent, was awarded the contract for construction in January this year, and a number of local subcontractors are also involved in the construction of the state-of-the-art facilities, including DRM Contracting Services, Cobar Cranes, Martin Rural Contracting, and Cynend.

New vet is enjoying change of pace working in the Outback Cobar once again has the services of a permanent vet, with Dr Lauren Leicester joining the Kidman Way Veterinary Surgery practice last week.

Prior to coming to Cobar, Lauren worked in a large mixed animal veterinary surgery at Invercargill on New Zealand’s South Island.

“There were 10 vets there and a total of 26 people working in one building so it was quite hectic.

“There were lots of people and a lot going on,” she told The Cobar Weekly.

Lauren said she was looking forward to the change of pace that working in Cobar, in a much smaller surgery, would bring.

“I actually thought is was going to be a lot quieter than it is.

“It’s been really quite busy which is nice,” Lauren said after her first week of surgeries at both Cobar and Bourke.

“I’m not a huge city person.

“Invercargill, where I was working, is classed as ‘rural’ so it kind of made sense really to move somewhere a bit warmer and nicer weather, its not snowing here so that’s nice!”

After growing up in New Zealand and leaving school at 18, Lauren said she’s always wanted to work with animals and so went to Dunedin to study a degree in Zoology.

At the completion of her studies she travelled to Africa with a girlfriend as both were keen to go and “work with the big cats”.

“We went over there for 12 months and I worked with chimpanzees at a chimpanzee sanctuary that was run by an American vet.

“She did a lot of surgery there, as well as on cats and dogs that were living in the village.

“She did TB testing and wound care, things like that.”

Lauren said she really enjoyed the experience, had a re-think and decided to be a vet “instead of working in conservation and the Zoology academic side of things”.

Upon her return from Africa, she applied to James Cook University in Queensland to do her Veterinary degree, was accepted and moved to study and work in Townsville and Mackay for the next six and a half years.

“I then moved back to New Zealand due to pressure from my mum.

“She wanted me to go home and settle down and get married and do all those things.

“So I moved home, got married but I haven’t settled down and I’m not looking at having kids anytime soon,” Lauren said.

different jobs in Australia.

“I just think it was the right time for us to move on from where we were and I was looking for a new challenge.”

She called the girlfriend who she’d travelled to Africa with(who was working in Sydney) and asked her opinion of a couple of places.

Her girlfriend had done some remote work at Bourke and Cobar and told Lauren, “Cobar was a really great place”.

So upon that recommendation Lauren decided to take up the position at the Cobar surgery which also includes surgery work two days a week at Bourke.

Lauren’s favourite areas of interest includes “the medicine side of things, and bloodwork and working out complex medical cases.

“I do a lot of surgery as well so really it’s pretty much everything to do with small animals.

“I did train with larger animals but it’s not really my passion but I’m happy to help when I can”.

Lauren’s husband, three cats and dog have made the move to Cobar with her.

(Unfortunately they couldn’t bring her three pet sheep and three chickens which had to be re -homed before they left.)

Lauren said while she is mostly “a dog person” she is also “a bit of a sucker” which is how she came to have three cats.

“They just kind of came into the clinic—one was really sick, one was going to be euthanised and the other one was on ‘buy, swap and sell’.”

Lauren said she’s been made to feel very welcome in her first week in Cobar.

“Everyone is friendly and very appreciative that there is a vet here.

“Its nice to feel appreciated,” she said.

Dr Lauren Leicester has recently taken up the role as a permanent vet at the Kidman Way Veterinary Surgery. Lauren has moved to Cobar from Invercargill, New Zealand with her husband, her dog Piper (a five year old Spoodle Maltese, pictured above) and three cats.

What sort of person makes for a good councillor?

With Local Government elections coming up in September, Cobar Shire Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko is hoping locals who are passionate about Cobar will put up their hands to run for Council.

In his 45 years of working in Local Government (including two stints with Cobar Shire and others at Broken Hill, Maitland and Young councils), Mr Vlatko said he’s been privileged over those years to work with lots of good Councillors.

“I’ve also had to work with some pretty bad ones too,” he said.

“I think the type of person that makes a good Councillor is someone who is passionate about the shire, its people, its development, and progress,” Mr Vlatko told The Cobar Weekly.

“A good Councillor can work in a team and is prepared to listen, to learn, and will respect the views of others.

“It’s a person who wants make a positive difference and engage with others, both Councillors and residents.”

Mr Vlatko said a good Council is one that is made up of a diverse group of people.

“Apart from being over 18, there’s no age restrictions for Councillors just as long as they want to contribute ideas and are willing to accept the views and ideas of others,” he said.

“It would be great to have some young people as well as some older ones, males and females, people who could all bring different views and ideas that will help to grow and

develop the vision for Council going forward.”

Mr Vlatko said the amount of time a Councillor needs to devote to the role is up to them.

“It’s not a fulltime position,” he said.

Councillors are required to attend one workshop a month (2-3 hours duration) a Council meeting each month (another 2-3 hours) and, any extra time they want to give to the role, is up to each individual.

Councillors may also be called upon to do some reading and research prior to meetings and workshops; to attend sub committee meetings; and to represent council at various public events.

“Although all you really need is the willingness to be part of the Council … and of course it’s up to the residents to vote you in,” —Peter Vlatko “But this is subject to the Councillor’s availability and workload,” Mr Vlatko said.

“You can be employed, retired or whatever.”

He said it’s also a bonus if a Councillor is a good networker.

“As a Councillor it is very important that you can gain the views of your community and ratepayers so that you can help Council to make the best decisions.

“If you’re part of a few different networks in the community, you can bring their views/

ideas to the table when Council needs to make decisions.

“It’s important for Councillors to accept the fact that when making a decision, it is not always about what they think or want, but rather they need to consider what’s best for Council and the people who live in our wonderful shire.

“One councillor by themselves can’t change the rules, it’s the majority that decides,” Mr Vlatko said.

“For Council to make a decision or resolution, it needs the votes of half plus one (ie Cobar Shire has 12 Councillors and so it needs a total of seven votes) for it to be passed,” he explained.

“The Council operates under the Local Government Act and these rules are what Councillors have to work to.

“If you want to be an individual and not support the decision of Council, then you will not achieve very much at all in your time on Council,” Mr Vlatko said.

He said as Council operates like a business, having a business background is an advantage for a Councillor.

“Councillors all bring something to the table that they have experience or knowledge of.

“Although all you really need is the willingness to be part of the Council,” he said.

“And of course it’s up to the residents to vote you in.”

Mr Vlatko said in order to create a vision for Cobar Shire, it’s important that Councillors and Council staff work together to achieve and deliver it.

“A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and working together goes a long way to creating a positive and progressive culture for both the Council and the community.

“We have a vision for Cobar Shire to be an attractive, healthy and caring place where we can all enjoy living, working and playing.

“We believe this vision can be achieved by working in partnership with the community through new initiatives, foresight and good leadership.

“If that’s something people reading this article identify with, and they’ve been thinking about running for Council, then we’d love to hear from them. I’d be happy to sit down with them and run through the process of how they can nominate for Council.

“I’m the sort of person who sees “the glass is half full, not half empty”, and come September, I hope all 12 members of our new Council will also be of the same opinion,” he said.

Shoppers in the main street on Saturday may have noticed some background music coming from the recently installed PA System located at the Cobar Shire Library.

The $60,000 project, which was funded through the Drought Communities Extension Program, was coordinated by local ‘IT Guru’ Tom Shanahan from the Tronic Group for Council and installed by a local electrical contractor, AC/DC. “We did a lot of homework and had a look at Parkes and a number of other councils who had installed public PA systems and found out what was good and what was bad,” Tom said.

“At Parkes, their system is not wireless, which they said limited them while other councils strongly advised to buy good quality equipment.”

Tom said taking that advice on board, he went with BOSE equipment and six high quality weather rated speakers have been installed throughout Cobar’s main street.

“It also has two wireless microphones located at the library and an expansion point that will allow a band or singer to plug into this system.

“It’s all wireless, wifi connected and controlled off an iPad,” Tom said.

“Now the infrastructure is in, there’s an opportunity further down the track to add on to this system to expand it further throughout the CBD,” he said.

Progress at the park

Drummond Park is a very busy place with lots of upgrade work currently going on. In addition to refurbishing the Rotunda, shades have been erected over the barbecue area and over the toilet block. The front footpath is also being replaced. The upgrade works at the park are part of a large number of projects Cobar Shire Council currently has on the go, many of which have been funded in partnership with the Federal and State governments. The work is all part of Cobar Shire’s vision to make Cobar a more attractive place to live, work and play.

Opportunities for land rehab works

Landholders and community groups can receive funding assistance to undertake works that will help to improve agricultural productivity and ecological sustainability.

Western Local Land Services currently has two funding programs open which are supported by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Senior Lands Services Officer—Rangeland Rehabilitation, Paul Theakston, said some of the erosion we see in the western area today dates back to the late 1800s/early 1900s, when we experienced the biggest drought that has occurred in the European history of this country, the Federation Drought.

“There was a lot of over grazing, there was rabbits and there was a drought and they all came together to form this massive devastation and it changed the landscape irreversibly,” Paul said.

“People couldn’t recognize the country anymore.”

He said while there has been some natural regeneration since then, some erosion we see today is still a legacy of that time.

He said in his role with Local Land Services he’s worked with a number of landholders over the years to help them regenerate and sustainably manage their country.

Paul said it’s important to pick the right “tools” for each regeneration project.

“Ponding” and “water spreading” have been some of the most successful tools that Paul has seen landholders implement on their properties.

“We are not stopping any water flow, we are just slowing it down,” he explained.

He said it’s great to see flood plains on regenerated areas, which were dehydrated and dying, now come to life after rain.

“Hundreds of acres have been flooded now which haven’t been flooded for years.

“It just hasn’t had the water.

“The native plants and animals that need that water on these floodplains, they’re benefitting, they’re starting to spring to life so you have this dual outcome where you have the environment benefitting and the grazing/ farming family benefitting as well.

“It’s really exciting to be involved in that kind of work,” Paul said.

Applications for both funding rounds close next week.

Masked meetings are becoming the new “normal” Masks were mandatory for the Cobar Hospital Auxiliary’s annual general meeting on Monday.

Cobar Hospital Auxiliary committee president Sharon Harland said members found it “a bit weird” attending a meeting with everyone wearing a mask.

“With ongoing uncertainty around COVID, it might be something we’ll have to get used to, especially as a number of our members are seniors and in the most vulnerable age group,” Mrs Harland said.

The meeting returned Mrs Harland once again as their president, with all of the other executive roles also unchanged.

Merredene Cantwell retained the role of vice president, Beryl Martin was again voted in as secretary, Barbara Bartlett was returned as treasurer and Phyllis Budd once again accepted the role of the group’s patron.

In her president’s report, Mrs Harland said the group had donated almost $6,000 worth of equipment for the Cobar Health Service over the past year that included a mobile pressure relief chair and two shower commodes, which will help to increase the comfort of hospital patients.

“We have been a bit limited in our fundraising efforts this past year due to COVID, but were lucky to receive a $1,000 donation from the Buffalo Lodge which has been a great help,” Mrs Harland said.

In keeping with current NSW Public Health Orders and restrictions, the Cobar Hospital Auxiliary committee members wore masks and practiced social distancing at their annual general meeting on Monday at the Cobar Library meeting room. Access made easier

New regulations require QR code check in at work As part of NSW Health’s attempt to better trace COVID contacts, it will be mandatory for visitors and staff to use the NSW QR Code check-in at all workplaces and businesses from next Monday.

In addition to supermarkets, individual retail shops and gyms, you will now also need to check into any offices where you work or visit, at manufacturing and warehouse places, TAFE and schools (excluding students).

Businesses such as clubs, pubs, restaurants, cafes, hairdressers and beauticians that are already using the QR code to check-in customers, will now need to make sure all staff and other visitors to their business (eg delivery drivers) also check-in.

Hospitality businesses will also now need to extend the QR code check-in to include their customers getting takeaway.

Cobar Police have had an increase in reports of stolen vehicle fridges over the past few weeks.

Senior Constable Lucas Hardy said they encourage any person with information surrounding stolen car fridges to contact police.

“We also remind vehicle owners to be vigilant and ensure their vehicles are locked and secured, including any items left in the trays of vehicles,” Senior Constable Hardy said.

Rebates for mice plague control

State Member for Barwon Roy Bulter is encouraging local residents, small businesses and primary producers who have been affected by the mice plague to claim a rebate from Service NSW. If you’ve purchased mouse baits, traps or cleaning materials from February 1, 2021 to combat the mouse plague, you may be able to claim the NSW mouse control rebate.

Eligible households may apply for rebates up to $500.

For leased properties, the tenant has the first right to claim.

Eligible small businesses and primary producers may apply for rebates up to $1,000.

“These should be grants at this late stage,” Mr Butler said.

“Producing receipts will be impossible for some people.

“The eligibility date also leaves out towns that were overrun with mice since 2020.”

Applications will close in September or when funds near their allocation.

After enduring years of drought, landholders in the north of the Cobar Shire are now kicking up their heels after receiving rain for the past five consecutive weeks.

• The continuing rain we’ve had over the past month has been great however it has delayed a number of community projects including the sealing of the Town Hall Cinema and Grand Hotel carparks. Cobar Shire Council has applied for an extension for this (and a number of other almost completed projects) and are hopeful an extension will be granted. The carparks were due to have been completed by the end of June.

• It’s NAIDOC Week, which is usually held in the first week of July. This year’s theme is Heal Country! and calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protection for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration and destruction.

• Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of former long-time resident Maureen Yates who passed away in Orange on the weekend. The Cobar Hospital Auxiliary committee held a minute’s silence for

Monday as a mark of respect for her service to the committee, including serving as the group’s treasurer for some years.

• Sympathy is also extended to the family and friends of Marc Griffiths who will be farewelled tomorrow with a graveside service.

• The Service NSW Dine & Discover vouchers have been extended once again and will now be valid until the end of August. The rules around their use have also been modified slightly (with regards to stricter health regulations) and Dine vouchers can be used for takeaway that you have directly delivered to your home.

• How great is Drummond Park going to look when all the upgrade work is finally finished?

The bounty of rain we’ve had this year has also helped to make it a very, beautiful green spot for locals and visitors to enjoy.

• Were you shopping in the main street on Saturday morning and enjoyed Council’s ‘Jamming in July’ playlist playing on the new PA System at the Cobar Library?

Council staff are planning to have different themed playlist once a month on Saturdays to help create a bit of atmosphere in the CBD. Scientific findings show that slower, more leisurely music causes shoppers to spend more time contemplating their purchases and enjoying the atmosphere. It’s also proven to lead to a significant increase in sales. Up-tempo or fast-paced music encourages quicker shopping and also results in fewer purchases. (Obviously up-tempo music is played where men shop!)

Still pretty average Golfers not fazed by cool conditions The ladies golf scores are still pretty average after the course was inundated with yet more rain during the week.

Luckily all the scheduled program book games went ahead.

Wednesday’s Par game was a win for Susan Goonrey after she posted a score of -4.

A countback then separated Ann Dunn and Barb Barklimore after each scored -6 while Daphne Cross had the next best score with -7.

No A Grader claimed the Nearest the Pin (NTP) prize on the 11th hole although Susan Goonrey managed to win the B Grade prize and Barb Barklimore collected it for C Grade after both were able to stay on the fairway to claim the prize.

A Four-Ball-Best-Ball Stableford was played on Saturday with 14 starters. One shot winners were Fran Samios and Daphne Cross (with 39 points) over Fay Hardwick and Jannine Wilkin on 38 points. In third place were Barb Barklimore and Susan Goonrey with 36.

The A Grade NTP on the 15th hole went to Fay Hardwick; B Grade was won by Jannine Wilkin; and Daphne Cross was the closest for C Grade.

There was a close finish in Sunday’s Stableford, which attracted 20 players, with only one point separating each of the place getters.

Julie Livingston secured top spot with 36 points followed by Serena Fraser (35 points), Ann Dunn and Narelle Kriz (34 each), Susan Goonrey (32) and Jannine Wilkin on 31.

Robynne Morton was closest to the pin on the 3rd hole for A Grade, Marlene Wynd in B Grade and Glenis Prisk for C Grade.

The Cobar Lady Golfers Pennants team travelled to Dubbo last week but unfortunately the competition was postponed and the team of Sally Bannister, Narelle Kriz, Fay Hardwick and Jannine Wilkin then made another 600km round trip, meeting up with Karen Walsh, to take on the Dubbo team on Monday.

The Cobar side was unfortunately beaten 5-0 on the grass greens.

In the local competition today, a Stroke game will be played with the annual Bannister’s Day Stableford on Saturday. July’s trophy day is set down for Sunday.—T’d Off

The cool winter weather over the weekend didn’t faze the local golfers with reasonable fields competing in the men’s competitions on both Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday was the Captain’s Trophy for July, but the Captain himself was nowhere to be seen (It’s rumoured he decided to head off to a Victorian course on the Murray River where he can play golf without having to wear a mask).

Wearing a mask on the Cobar course however didn’t deter Mark Fraser.

He played a great round of golf to easily win by four strokes with a three-over-par score of 69 to leave the rest of the field in his wake.

Max Phillips and Garry Wilkin both scored 73 points with Phillips winning second place on a countback.

Matt Russell came 4th with 74 points and Bill Fugar was 5th on 75 points.

Nearest the Pin (NTPs) were won on the 3rd and 15th holes by Russell; 7th—Fugar; and 8th—Peter Lawrence. The 11th was not won.

Sunday’s game was a three-ball Classic with five teams of three playing a Stableford.

It was a long day and finished late with one group of nine golfers making for slow play.

The trio of Bill Fugar, Max Phillips and Jay Egan scored 80 points to hold off Stewart Fraser, Peter Lawrence and Garry Wilkin on 77 points.

The only par three’s that were won on the

day were the 3rd hole by Stewart Fraser and the 7th by Jim Goonrey.

Last year’s finalists in the Bill Bartlett Match Play competition, champion Jay Egan and runner-up Greg Clark, have now both been eliminated from this year’s competition.

In their matches on the weekend, Bill Fugar bluffed Clark out and the wily Bian Smith was too smart for Egan.

For the next round, Fugar will play Rob McIver and Garry Wilkin will play Bian Smith.

The Nearest the Pin competition is also starting to get interesting.

At the moment Garry Wilkin, with 14 NTPs is five clear of Barry Doyle and Peter Lawrence on nine.

But look out for the old master Max Phillips who, after a slow start, is coming home fast!

Mid-week golf is looking a bit irregular as it is over a month since a game was played on a Wednesday.

If enough players turn up there will be a competition today.

Saturday is Bannister Day and with Michael Bannister losing so much money at “skins” games lately, prizemoney might be a bit light on unless wife Sally steps in and helps out.

Sunday’s competition is an individual Stableford.

The Warren Open is also to be held on Sunday.—Out of Bounds

Roosterettes continue to perform well

The Cobar Roosterettes, who have been the fast finishers in the Castlereagh League Tag competition this season, went so close to recording another upset when they took on Coonabarabran on Saturday.

After knocking off the previously undefeated Baradine side last week, the Roosterettes well and truly matched their higher ranked opposition in their Round 12 match played at Coonabarabran on Saturday.

Both sides scored two tries each in the match but the final difference was in their goal kicking with Coonabarabran converting both tries while Cobar only managed to convert one.

The final score, in Coonabarabran’s favour, was 12-10 (which was also the margin at half time).

Kayla Hassan and Tyler Chiswick scored tries for Cobar with Zoë Egan kicking one goal.

The Roosterettes will face the other ladder leader, Dunedoo, this week, (Dunedoo sharing the ladder lead with Baradine.)

The Roosterettes will have a home ground advantage and if they show the tenacity and spirit of their past two games, then the Dunedoo visitors should be worried about the outcome.

Taking down a Puma

While there were high hopes of the Camels having a good showing, they were however without their entire front line and the visitors won 39-0.

An ‘edge of your seat’ bowls match The bowls Singles Championship game between Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Aaron Finn at the Golfie on Sunday was an amazing ‘edge of your seat’ neck-and-neck tussle.

Finn had a slow start up to the 11th end however, by the 21st end he’d recovered his form and the score was 18 points all.

With only a couple of points separating them after 33 ends, Grimmond kept his nose in front to claim a victory of +4 after 36 ends.

A field of 10 social bowlers braved the chilly conditions on Sunday for a game of pairs and triples. In the pairs game, Bian Smith and

Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod took on John Daly and Cameron van Breugel.

The mighty Smith/McLeod duo were in tip top form to finish with a +12 win.

In the triples game, David Schofield skippered team mates Randall Hall and Barry Bargwanna to victory over Ian Prendergast’s team consisting of Karen Daly and Doug Hudson.

Their winning margin was also +12 and after a count back, Schofield, Hall and Bargwanna were declared the winners for the day.

The much anticipated/dreaded Giraffe Award was claimed by Doug Hudson.—The back-up

Roosters rack up another big win

The Cobar Roosters racked up another win with another big score in their Round 12 Christie and Hood Castlereagh Rugby League game on Saturday.

The Cobar side finished as convincing 58-24 winners over Coonabarabran at Coonabarabran.

Thomas Plater led the scoring for the Roosters with three tries, Ashley Davies and Gerald Mackay both scored doubles while Nathan McAndrew, David Watson and Tim Hillam also touched down to help the Roosters to their big win. Watson was in form with the boot, kicking eight conversions.

The Roosters will feature in the Castlereagh ‘Match of the Round’ this Saturday when they take on the undefeated, competition front runners, the Dunedoo Swans.

The Swans have faced strong examinations over the past two weeks, winning narrowly against both Coonabarabran and then Gulgong, but this week will be their sternest test to date. They will be especially hard pressed to maintain their unbeaten record if captain/ coach Ben Thompson (who was sent from the field in Saturday’s game with Gulgong) does not receive a favourable outcome from the Judiciary this week.

The Roosters are always a difficult proposition at home, and they will be keen on their chances of securing a share of the competition lead.

Brilliant on debut The Cobar Bowman’s Club held a shoot on Sunday with just one round being shot.

Darren Meyer, in the compound unlimited class, shot the best score of the day with 374.

Dick Tulloh, with his recurve bow, shot a great score of 326 with Darrell Warren recording 282.

Using a Longbow, Pete Rogers finished the round with a score of 222.

The club’s newest young recruit, Taj Goonrey, shot a very impressive score for his first time to finish the round with 180.

High hopes for the Camels were dashed by Pumas Buoyed by a very good performance last week, the Cobar Camels Old Boys cheer squad had high hopes the First Grade team would continue their good form into their Round 10 game against Warren on Saturday.

That however didn’t happen as the Camels were beaten 39-0.

The Camels were forced to host the Pumas on Saturday without the services of their entire

front row (who were unavailable due to injury, work and family commitments).

They tried to compensate and do the best with the team they had and, for much of the first half, they did match the visitors.

Warren’s first points came after an early penalty and it wasn’t until midway through the first half that they had the opportunity to increase the score when they pulled off a runaway try to score in the corner and lead 8-0.

After sustained attack on the Camels’ line, the Pumas crossed at the 30 minute mark and the successful conversion took their lead out to 15-0.

The Camels’ defence held tight for the remainder of the first half but so did the Pumas’ defence as none of the Camels attacking raids could penetrate and the score was still 15-0 at half time.

Warren had plenty of possession in the second half which showed on the scoreboard.

Their attack had plenty of speed and the Pumas used that pace a number of times during the second half to outrun the Camels.

They scored four second half tries, the last of which was scored right on the fulltime siren, to finish with a 39-0 win.

While the Camels showed improvements in their scrummaging, and are backing each other up and starting to gel well as a team, they turned the ball over too often in Saturday’s game which ultimately hurt them on the scoreboard.

A lack of fitness also showed as their backline defence lagged in the second half which was when the Pumas scored the bulk of their points.

Cobar’s Best & Fairest recipients were: Samuel Jeffery (3), Timothy Stever (2) and Jayden Harvey and Jay Ellison (1 point each).

Jeffery was named Players’ Player.

Barring injuries, the Camels will be hoping they can field their full side this week when they host Gulargambone for Round 11, which will also be the club’s Ladies Day. In the women’s rugby game that proceeded the main game, the Cobar Bactrians hosted the Warren ladies side with the visitors finishing with a 5-2 win.

Cobar’s Players’ Player was Roisin McGoland she also shared in the Bactrians’ Cobar Camels’s Sean Bayliss found a bit of room to have a run on the wing in Saturday’s drick Best & Fairest points, picking up two points.
