From next week, Cobar businesses won’t have a choice when it comes to welcoming vaccinated or unvaccinated people into their premises and they may also be subjected to fines up to $5,000 for failing to comply with the new health orders.

NSW is expected to reach a 70 per cent double dose vaccination rate by next Monday when restrictions are set to ease across the state for vaccinated residents only.

As part of the new health orders, people aged 16 years and over will only be allowed entry into some venues or settings if fully vaccinated, along with people with exemptions.

In some venues, children under 16 will have to be accompanied by a fully vaccinated member of their household to enter.

This includes hospitality venues, noncritical retail stores, personal services (eg hair and beauty), sporting, recreation and entertainment facilities and events.

Critical retail such as supermarkets and pharmacies will still however be accessible to those not fully vaccinated.

Businesses will be responsible for taking reasonable measures to stop unvaccinated people entering premises as part of the new compliance rules and obligations.

Some businesses will need to have authorised officers to monitor their re-opening including hospitality venues, retail, gyms, and personal services.

Penalties may apply for individuals and businesses who don’t comply.

Fines of $5,000 may apply to businesses for not complying with the Public Health Order vaccination requirements. Further penalties may apply for significant breaches.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said it is important to note that the new advice may be updated by NSW Health as case numbers and evidence changes.

“We will continue to do what we have done throughout this pandemic, which is to regularly update our advice, informed by experience, feedback, and emerging evidence.

“It is only in partnership that we can reopen in a safe way.”

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said while high vaccination rates were the key factor in the roadmap to recovery, COVID-19 will continue to circulate in the community.

“I urge those who are yet to get vaccinated to do so quickly to protect yourself, your loved ones and the community,” Mr Hazzard said.

“Vaccination will provide greater freedoms as our society opens up and it reduces the risk of you spreading the virus to someone vulnerable, which could cost them their life.”

Mr Hazzard said everyone, vaccinated and not vaccinated, is urged to get tested if they have any symptoms of COVID-19 and immediately self-isolate until a negative result is received.

Whether vaccinated or not vaccinated, if you test positive for COVID-19 you must selfisolate for 14 days.

Local youth show plenty of interest at first council meeting There was plenty of interest shown in forming a new Youth Council with a big turn out for their first meeting last Friday.

Cobar Shire Council’s new youth officer Natalie Prisk said the meeting was an incredible success with lots of great ideas coming out of their brainstorming session.

“We had 15 youth put their hand up to join the Council and 11 participated on the day during an initial brainstorming session.

One of the victims of crime, Lisa Travis, who did report the theft of her daughter’s Trek Mountain Bike to police, encourages others to report any incidents to police either at Cobar Police station or online through the NSW Police Force Community Portal (portal.police.nsw.gov.au).

It’s unacceptable!

Member for Barwon Roy Butler has expressed his anger at the NSW Government’s decision to force vaccine compliance on local businesses under the threat of thousands of dollars in fines.

“It’s an unacceptable burden to place on local businesses who have been through an incredibly tough couple of years in Barwon – drought, mice plagues and COVID lockdowns have put a fair few businesses on their knees – now it’s the burden of enforcing the government’s vaccine passport by stealth,” Mr Butler said.

He said the new rules which come into effect next week place businesses squarely in the firing line when enforcing the heavily debated vaccine mandate which sees people who aren’t vaccinated excluded from certain businesses.

“Local businesses could be up for $5,000 fines if they’re found to have anyone on their premises who isn’t double vaccinated, this threat places a heavy burden on them to police the comings and goings from their business.

Local apprentice decides to upskill with the help of TAFE With the help of TAFE NSW, apprentice mechanic Amber Byrne recently stepped out of her comfort zone and learnt how to operate the equipment she’ll be working on.

Amber, 19, is studying a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology and plans to add heavy diesel qualifications later in her apprenticeship.

She jumped at the opportunity to complete a Statement of Attainment in Loader and Excavator Operations when it was recently offered at the Cobar campus.

Employed at her father’s Superior Diesel Solutions business, Amber has grown up around vehicles and mechanical repairs.

She became interested in doing an apprenticeship when she purchased her own vehicle and wanted to learn how she could make it stand out.

As well as working on light vehicles, repairing and maintaining civil construction and agricultural equipment will be an important part of her future work.

“When I saw TAFE was offering a course in operating excavators and loaders, I knew that if I learnt to operate the equipment in a practical setting, it would help me be a better mechanic when working on those machines,” Amber said.

Nominations for the Blue Plaque Heritage Program opened last week and State Member for Barwon Roy Butler is asking locals to nominate places and personalities that have special significance to our community’s heritage.

“We’re looking for inspiring, important stories that connect us with places and events,” Mr Butler said.

“They can relate to Aboriginal people, migrant heritage, social movements and change, wartime history, industrial progress, arts and culture, sport, historic events that have shaped your area or your local heroes.

“The Blue Plaque is an internationally recognised way of promoting significant heritage

places, people and stories,” he explained.

“The NSW initiative is inspired by the Blue Plaques Program in the United Kingdom.

“Behind every plaque there is a story – a digital story will be linked to each Blue Plaque,” Mr Butler said.

You can nominate people, events and stories associated with a place to be considered for Blue Plaques.

Nominations can be lodged at Mr Butler’s office by the end of the month.

Drilling to start at Bulla Park

West Cobar Metals, a publicly listed ASX company, is excited by the prospects in the Cobar basin and is keen to start drilling at Bulla Park, 110km west of Cobar.

Their Bulla Park Project consists of two granted exploration licences and two exploration licence applications.

The company’s initial drill intersections have indicated a substantial copper (silver) mineralisation system, demonstrating previously unrecognised potential.

Drill intersections and detailed gravity surveys have been carried out and drilling is now proposed down dip and along strike to test the extension of the mineralised horizon.

According to the company’s website: “A further diamond drill target is established at Mountain, 8km north of Bulla Park, where a similar gravity high occurs with some geochemical support.”

The minerals exploration company is focused on copper, lead, silver and gold and Bulla Park is one of identified four projects in the Cobar Basin alongside the nearby Mt Jack Project, Cawker’s Well Project and the Nantilla Project, all of which are at various stages of exploration.

Community groups get the first crack Local community and sporting groups will have the first opportunity to bid on a range of surplus items being offered for sale by Cobar Shire Council.

Council’s director of finance and community services, Kym Miller, said some of the items are furniture and fittings which have come from the Cobar Library, the museum and the Cobar Youth & Fitness Centre.

There’s also some surplus items from Council’s Depot and from the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

In addition to furniture (which includes a variety of shelves and cupboards), there’s fittings and various gym equipment along with a large quantity of pavers.

Mr Miller said community groups would have first pick before the items went out for sale to the general public.

Girl Guides go on an Amazing Race

The Cobar Girl Guides (and a few ring-ins) had a lot of fun last Thursday taking part in an Amazing Race which had them running all over town looking for clues. During the race the teams were required to work out the cryptic clues, carry out random acts of kindness, use weird words like ‘nincompoop’ and ‘underpants’ in sentences and carry out some community service (pulling out weeds at the pool). At their final clue spot they were required to buy something (bread, hot chips and cordial) which they shared at Drummond Park after all teams had finished. Cobar Shire Council’s tourism manager Demi Smith said the new name, The Great Cobar Museum, was proposed and discussed by the Museum Project Team and then presented to Cobar Shire Councillors at a workshop. Councillors voted in favour of updating the name. Demi said the new name is simplified, instantly recognisable and it’s clear to visitors what the building holds. Building work is now complete and the staff have started moving back in. COVID restrictions allowing, an exhibition team will be here in a fortnight to set up the displays. Demi is hoping The Great Cobar Museum will be able to re-open next month.

Community groups will be given first option. The goods will then be offered to the public.

The Cobar Business Association has begun planning this year’s annual Christmas Street Parade and Gala Shopping Night with fingers crossed that COVID restrictions will allow for a big night of fun.

The Association’s president Sharon Harland said they “lucked” being able to run the parade last year amid COVID restrictions and is hoping the popular community event will be able to be held again this year.

“There’s a fair bit of work in the planning and organising involved each year,” she said.

“This year we are hoping we can offer an even bigger and better event than past years!”

Cobar Shire Council is offering children aged 0-5 years (and their parents and carers) a new free activity with playgroup sessions to be conducted from next Monday at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

The sessions will be run by a local qualified Occupational Therapist (OT) Nicola Harbison who can offer parents and carers play ideas for in and out of the water to help children with their development.

“It will be an informal way for parents and carers to discuss any concerns or ask questions about how to assist their children in any areas of development,” Nicola said.

“The first week I will gauge the kids and families attending, then I may be able to cover a specific topic around development each week.

“That might be behaviour, sleeping, toileting, gross motor skills, sensory processing etc. but will be dependent on the needs of the group.

“I can help facilitate group activities and demonstrate different ways to interact and keep kids engaged” she said.

Water safety and confidence is an integral part of a child’s development.

Water can provide a fun and supportive environment to assist in the development of muscle strength and coordination, as well as help develop social skills and help young children to make safe decisions around water.

Nicola said as an OT she can assist in teaching water safety and positioning for babies, toddlers and children in the water.

She said the playgroup sessions are however not structured water safety or learn to swim classes.

Nicola said while she does have a plan for the first lot of sessions she thinks they will however evolve into what the group needs and wants.

“I look at it as providing an opportunity for families to engage with an Occupational Therapist in a relaxed and informal way, hopefully upskilling parents and carers along the way,” Nicola said.

The free sessions commence on Monday .

• Cobar Shire Council has had a good spring clean and has cleared out a number of surplus items which are going to be auctioned off. While the Council’s Children’s Services groups have had first pick of the items up for grabs, local sporting and charity groups will now have a chance to bid on the items before they go out to the public for sale.

Representatives of community groups may inspect the items on offer this Friday. See Council’s advertisement on Page 10 for more details.

• It’s good to see some warm weather for the start of the new swimming season (for a

degrees and Monday’s maximum of 25 degrees have helped somewhat to warm up the water in the 50 metres pool for the season’s first keen lap swimmers. (The little pool however doesn’t need to wait for the weather to warm up as it’s heated and always warm!)

• The John Mitchell Pharmacy has advised they will be offering both the Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID vaccines at the pharmacy from next Tuesday. Bookings for the vaccines can be made by contacting the pharmacy or through the Med Advisor app.

• We’ve heard the local magpies are still being very territorial especially around the Drummond Park and Heritage Park areas so be careful. Swooping is a magpie’s protective behaviour at breeding time, warding off intruders or potential threats from their nest, which could house eggs or young. It’s not that they are being aggressive, they are just protecting their kids!

• There’s been another couple of COVID causalities with the prospective 2022 Kinder students not able to attend a Smooth Start orientation program this year and the Year 6 kids are also missing out this year on their transition to high school program.

• With the state getting ready to ease restrictions next week it’s good to see COVID positive cases are declining in the western area with eight cases in the Western Local Health District up to 8pm October 6 and only one new case in Barwon (in Broken Hill).

Nominations are now open for Landcare Awards

Landcare and Local Land Services (LLS) are encouraging landholders, community groups and students to nominate for the 2021 NSW Landcare Awards.

The awards recognise individuals and groups for their outstanding contributions in natural resource management and community participation to preserve the state’s landscape.

Acting Local Land Services Statewide Chair, Allison Harker, said the awards are an opportunity to celebrate and honour Landcare champions across NSW excelling in sustainable agricultural practices and environmental conservation.

“Following bushfires, drought and floods, there are so many projects in NSW, whether they be habitat restoration for threatened species or innovative farming practices, that deserve to be recognised,” Ms Harker said.

“These projects play a vital role in restoring and maintaining our environment at a local level, and the Landcare awards are a terrific opportunity to recognise and reward hard work and passion.”

Dynamic bowls duo does it again

Karen Daly and Jimmy Goonrey were all smiles after they were again drawn out to play together in last weekend’s Sunday social bowls game at the Golfie.

This week they were matched up against Mike Sargent and John Goonrey who, it could be said, were unfortunately never really in the game.

They went down by a margin of seven shots to the dynamic duo of Daly and Goonrey.

On rink 3, Kyle Roberts, John Claus and David Thomas (playing double lead) took the runners-up money after finishing with a win of +2 against Don Roberts and Dean McLeod.

The final match was an even contest with Marlene Wynd, Aaron Finn and David Schofield proving to be too strong for the team of Shane Carter, John Daly and Doug Hudson.

Wynd’s team eventually won by two shots.

The ‘George the Giraffe Award’ was this week very hotly contested with Claus, Carter, Schofield and John Goonrey all bowling the odd shocker bowl for their nominations.

In the end it was Carter that took the prize after bowling one delivery that he couldn’t even blame as being a wrong bias!

There was also a Championship Pairs game played over the weekend.

The result was called early with Gerard Livingston and Peter ‘Skeeta’ Goonrey declared the winners after they had pulled away to a 25-15 lead against Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Barry Bargwanna.

Players are reminded to put their names on the bowlers’ board at the club to take part in the Triples competition to be played October 16 and 17.

Peter Robinson played solidly to win the event with 40 stableford points and finished two shots in front of Scott Meadows on 38 stableford points.

Scott Mayne, on 35 stableford points, took out third place followed by Alec Fraser on 34 and Barry Doyle on 33.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Geoff Dunne on the 3rd and 7th holes, Craig Dillon on the 8th hole, Bill Fugar on the 11th hole and Mark Fraser on the 15th hole.

A field of 16 players contested the Single Plus Money Ball Stableford event held on Sunday.

The winners on the day were Mark Fraser, Alec Fraser, Peter Lawrence and Jason Hampel on 153 stableford points.

Back in second place was the team of Garry Wilkin, Bill Fugar, Max Phillips and Geoff Dunne with 149 stableford points.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were claimed by Peter ‘China’ Brien on the 3rd hole, Garry Wilkin on the 7th and 11th holes, Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence on the 11th hole and Barry Doyle on the 15th hole.

The winner of the individual competition was Barry Doyle on 38 stableford points followed by Bill Fugar, also on 38 stableford points.

The CADJ Carwash Day Four Ball Aggregate Stableford played on Monday topped off a great weekend of golf.

The winners on the day were Scott Mayne and Geoff Rorke on 69 stableford points.

Finishing as the runners-up were Colin Eves and Ray Yench on 68 stableford points.

In third place on a countback was Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence and Mark Fraser followed

by Peter ‘China’ Brien and Peter Robinson.

Both teams finished with 67 stableford points.

Scott Mayne, with 41 stableford points, was the winner of the individual competition followed by Ray Yench on 35 stableford points.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Peter Robinson on the 3rd hole, Max Phillips on the 7th hole, Colin Eves on the 8th hole, Geoff Dunne on the 11th hole and Mark Fraser claimed the prize on the 15th hole.

Stable weather over the long weekend ensured all of the Ladies Golf competition’s scheduled rounds went ahead and many golfers enjoyed their time spent on the course.

Unfortunately last Wednesday’s game fell victim to the storms experienced over much of NSW and had to be cancelled.

Marlene Wynd put the six extra shots to good use in Saturday’s tight finishing Mulligan Stableford winning the day with 40 points.

(A Mulligan game gives each player six extra shots that can be replayed over the 18 holes e.g. if the ball lands in the water, a player can replay their shot without penalty).

Only four points separated all placings with Fran Samios taking second spot with 39 points followed by Julie Livingston (38) and Fay Hardwick with 37.

The Nearest the Pin competition winners on the 11th hole were Fay Hardwick, Angela Fryer and Glenda Peebles.

Sunday’s Par game was another close call with Robynne Morton the winner with +1 followed by Geraldine Francisco, the runnerup with an even card.

Jannine Wilkin held onto third place following a countback with Fay Hardwick after both scored -1.

Closest to the flag on the 15th hole were Sally Bannister, Barb Barklimore and Joy Josephson.

Three games in three days showed in the holiday Monday’s Stableford scores compared to Saturday’s good results.

Fran Samios was able to secure Monday’s

win with just 34 points with Angela Fryer second on 33.

Marlene Wynd and Barb Barklimore both had 31 points and Susan Goonrey finished with 29.

Geraldine Francisco, Marlene Wynd and Alma Rogers were all Nearest to the Pin winners on the third hole.

The annual Langford Day Mixed Canadian event will take place on Saturday after being postponed last month.

Cricketers look for a new committee The Cobar & District Cricket Association will be holding their annual general meeting this Friday night.

Club president Jake Harbison has called for last year’s committee to be in attendance to either hand over the reigns to a new person or to throw their hat in the ring for another year.

“All positions shall be considered vacant so we will be looking for the following: president, secretary, treasurer, publicity officer, someone familiar with Mycricket, Head COVID officer, curator and statistician.

“The quicker we get assembled and organised the quicker we can get on the paddock,” Harbison said.

Coles is helping Little A’s club to jump funding hurdles Coles is helping the Cobar Little Athletics Club to jump a funding hurdle this season with a $1,600 grant from the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund to buy brand new equipment.

Fresh off the inspiring performances from Australia’s track and field stars at the Tokyo Olympics, the Little Athletics centre in Cobar is hoping new equipment from Coles will help budding athletes fulfill their sporting potential.

Cobar Little Athletics Club president Troy Knight said the funding will help the centre to survive and thrive through challenging times.

“Cobar Little Athletics have supported several thousand Cobar children since 1976 and the continued success of our club is due entirely to the support given by many parents and guardians, volunteers and the community,” Mr Knight said.

“The Coles grant will enable us to buy a new trolley for our high jump mats which will help volunteers to move them in a safer and efficient manner.

“New equipment like this will ensure athletes and volunteers are keen to participate and thus prolong the longevity of our club.”

“Little Athletics centres and their dedicated volunteers play such a vital role in the local community to help kids keep active and healthy. We want to be better together with the community and we’re proud to play our part by providing nearly $650,000 in sports equipment grants to Little Athletics centres in NSW over the past three years,” he said.

Yabbies’ first plunge of the season

There were 12 swimmers and a couple of timekeepers for the Yabbies’ first swim of the club’s 50th season on Tuesday night.

It was a rather cool first dip of the season for the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club members on Tuesday night.

While the temperature may have read 21 degrees at 6pm, there was however a cool breeze to greet swimmers when they emerged from the 50 metre pool which was judged to have been only about 18 degrees.

The cool conditions did not seem to phase Lucas Hardy who won all four events contested in the opening night of what is the club’s

50th season.

In the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim, Hardy finished within 0.12 seconds of his nominated time to win from Paul Swainston (0.37) and Greg Dimond (0.38).

Hardy won the 50m event with 0.06 seconds off his time and the rest of the field was once again well behind with Scott Toomey second on 0.41 and Swainston was third with 0.62 seconds off his time.

The 100m swim proved to be a real test for

most with Murray Harland a long way back in third place with 2.94 seconds off his time, Matt Harland swam into second spot with 0.75 but Hardy once again blitzed the field winning with 0.28 seconds off his nominated time.

The Brace Relay novelty event was a walk across the warm pool for the teams of two— and Hardy won that too! He teamed up with Chris Powell to finish within 1.82 seconds of their nominated time ahead of Murray Harland and John Claus (1.84).
