Coulton believes Budget will drive growth in our electorate Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has welcomed the 2022-2023 Federal Budget, which he said will drive the growth of towns and communities across the Parkes electorate.

The Budget, which Treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down last Tuesday evening, focuses on providing cost of living relief, creating more jobs, guaranteeing essential services and keeping Australians safe.

“This Budget marks the next stage in leading Australia’s strong economy into the future and proves the Coalition Government continues to deliver for the people of the Parkes electorate,” Mr Coulton said.

Mr Coulton said the Government understands that Australian households are under pressure due to the rising cost of living.

“We’re helping Australians deal with these costs by delivering more jobs and putting upward pressure on wages, providing a one-off cost of living tax offset and a one-off cost of living payment for Australians most in need.

“By reducing the stress of high fuel prices on household budgets, reducing out-of-pocket expenses for child care, delivering more affordable energy, helping aspiring home buyers and reducing the cost of and increasing access to medicines.

“We’re also making record investments in health, education and other essential services; building roads, rail, dams and the renewable energy technology we’ll need for our future; and investing in stronger defence, borders and security,” he said.

Mr Coulton said the key investments outlined in the Budget that will deliver direct benefits in the Parkes electorate include tax relief of up to $1,500 for 55,800 taxpayers in the Parkes electorate and a $420 cost of living tax

offset for low- and middle-income earners.

There’s also a one-off cost of living payment of $250 for Australians most in need, including 18,628 pensioners, 7,342 disability support recipients 2,537 carers, 10,263 jobseekers, and 15,996 eligible self-funded retirees in the Parkes electorate.

There’s also a 50 per cent reduction in petrol and diesel excise and excise equivalent customs duty for six months.

“We’re also making record investments in health, education and other essential services,” —Mark Coulton.

He said the successful Home Guarantee Scheme will be more than doubled to 50,000 places per year, which includes helping another 35,000 first home buyers build a new home with a five per cent deposit, supporting an additional 5,000 single parents to purchase a home with a two per cent deposit, and offering a new Regional Home Guarantee for 10,000 eligible homebuyers to purchase or construct a new home in regional areas.

Mr Coulton applauded the Government’s plan to spend $365.3 million to help an extra 35,000 trade apprentices and trainees into training and $99.3 million for 80 additional medical Commonwealth supported places at rural campuses.

He said the announcement of deregulation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) licencing, which will allow Medicare-subsidised MRI services to be delivered, will also be of benefit to our region.

As part of the Budget, $811.8 million has been allocated for a new Connecting Regional

Australia project to address mobile blackspots along approximately 8,000kms of regional transport routes and adjacent premises and businesses, improve the resilience of telecommunications infrastructure against natural disasters, and encourage new technology trials.

Mr Coulton also praised the allocation of $523.3 million over four years to reduce the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme Safety Net thresholds.

An amount of $501.7 million is to be spent to extend the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to support local councils to maintain and deliver social infrastructure, improve road safety and bolster the resilience of the local road network.

The 2022-2023 Budget also allows for a $480 million investment towards upgrading the NBN’s Fixed Wireless Network and Satellite services.

An amount of $480.1 million over six years has been assigned to fund programs to support women and children who are experiencing family, domestic and sexual violence.

A further $468.3 million is in the Budget to continue implementing the Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety with $345.7 million for residential aged care facilities for pharmacy services, $285.5 million over five years for mental health treatment initiatives, $170.2 million over five years for preventative health initiatives, $46.7 million over two years for suicide prevention activities, $33.3 million over four years for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and $131.3 million over five years to update the Medicare Benefits Schedule.

Sunset serenade for Cobar Sound Chapel’s official opening The creator of Cobar’s Sound Chapel, Sydney-based composer and sound artist Georges Lentz, was thrilled with the turn out of an estimated crowd of 170 on Saturday afternoon for the chapel’s official opening.

Georges was also thrilled with how the whole Sound Chapel project, which was a collaboration with world-renowned Australian architect, Glenn Murcutt, has come together.

“It sounds like a cliché, but it is everything I had envisaged and more,” Georges told The Cobar Weekly.

He said while the finished product might not look exactly as what he first dreamed of almost 10 years ago, Georges said he understands that as an artwork, it needed to evolve.

“Artworks find their own way, they sometimes tell you what they want and what they need rather than what you want,” Georges said.

“I think the whole artwork—the sound art and the architecture—really sing together.

“They form one unit, and that is what it’s meant to be.

“It’s an artwork, not a venue, with music in it, an artwork that consists of sound art, architecture, Sharron Ohlsen’s beautiful black dot paintings in the windows, the poetry of William Blake, and the grunge and grittiness of the tank that all comes together,” he said.

And while the timing of the official launch was planned around practicalities, Georges said the performance by The Noise String Quartet as the sun on Saturday was setting lent even more magic to the event.

“We will definitely do that again and, if its anything like the other day, April might be a really good time for our yearly festival,” Georges said.

Bus shelter is taking shape

Butler leaks news of water funding State Member for Barwon Roy Butler has leaked the news that the construction of three new pump stations along the Nyngan to Cobar Pipeline will go ahead.

Mr Butler said the Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson MP said last week the Federal Government had agreed to co-fund the $46 million project.

Mr Butler said this was great news for Cobar and people who access water between Nyngan and Cobar.

“This upgrade is something I have raised with the NSW Premier Dom Perrottet, and the Minister. It is much needed and welcome,” Mr Butler said.

“It leaves pumping capacity for future growth in the region.

“The new pumping stations will use the latest technology for regulation of flow and pressure.”

Mr Butler said this $46 million upgrade however doesn’t fund the new pipeline.

“But that is something that I have discussed with the Minister, and expect to see more movement very soon,” Mr Butler said.

Cobar’s bus shelter and taxi rank near the intersection of Linsley and Marshall streets is looking to be close to completion with the construction fence now removed and pedestrian access is once again available to the area. While businesses and their customers in the immediate area have made a number of complaints about the noise and dust created during construction, the new shelter is looking good with its additional shade and seating. Part of the project includes two new garden beds, which when planted out, will further enhance Cobar’s CBD area.

Upgrade delivers wider, stronger Barrier Highway

The recent completion of a second upgrade of a section of the Barrier Highway west of Cobar will ensure a smoother and safer trip for road users.

The Musheroo East Pavement Strengthening and Widening Project involved the upgrade of an 11.05 kilometre section of the Barrier Highway, 125 kilometres west of Cobar.

Transport for NSW Regional Director West Alistair Lunn said NSW Government-funded road safety improvement projects in regional NSW were key to providing the safest possible roads on the state’s road network.

“Given two-thirds of all road fatalities occur on country roads, it’s projects such as these that are helping to keep people safe in regional NSW,” Mr Lunn said.

“The $5.8 million East Musheroo project, which started in March 2021, has provided road users in western NSW with a stronger, wider and safer road.”

Cobar Shire Council carried out the work on behalf of Transport for NSW and the road improvement project helped to support 25 local jobs.

“The Musheroo East upgrade follows the 11.2 kilometre Musheroo upgrade in 2019, totalling more than 20 kilometres of wider and stronger road for all local, freight and tourist users of the Barrier Highway,” Mr Lunn said.

CWA’s newest members recognise longest serving members The Country Women’s Association (CWA) Cobar branch has recently welcomed two new Junior members, Ellie and Lexie Traynor.

The sisters are the first Junior members the branch has had since 1959.

At the branch’s March meeting, Ellie and Lexie were given the honour of making a special presentation to two of the group’s long serving members, Mary Madden and Jean Poulter.

Both ladies currently serve as the branch’s vice presidents and both have contributed greatly to meetings and activities with their wealth of experience, their generosity and their knowledge.

Over the years, they have also helped with a number of other activities associated with CWA. Cobar CWA Branch secretary Kay Corbett reports in other matters from the March meeting, two senior students from Cobar High School were also presented with their Ellen Knight Memorial Scholarships.

“We wanted to give the scholarship early this year because last year we were interrupted by COVID-19 restrictions,” Kay said.

Following the presentations the meeting continued to discuss plans for the Cobar Show which included items to be displayed in the main pavilion and the branch’s Trade Cobar CWA Branch’s newest junior members, Ellie and Lexie Traynor were given the Stand which will sell handicraft and cooking. honour of making a special presentation to two of the branch’s longest serving members, Mary Madden and Jean Poulter. New starters power into a new career A group of more than 50 apprentices and trainees (two of which are based in Cobar) have taken a huge step up in their career signing on with electrical distribution giant, Essential Energy.

The group is part of Essential Energy’s largest-ever new cohort and includes apprentices, trainees, and four university graduates.

The group joined Essential Energy last month as part of the electricity distributor's commitment to continue sharing a better energy future for the regional, rural and remote communities in its footprint.

Essential Energy's Chief Operating Officer Luke Jenner said the new group now brings the total number of graduates, apprentices and trainees working in the business up to 185.

“We were astounded by the quality of applicants we had this year, which we felt really speaks to the reputation of the program and how much people realise the benefits of working for a regionally-based company that thinks globally,” Mr Jenner said.

“We actually employed two more apprentices than we were planning due to the quality of applicants.”

The total new employees into the business through the programs consist of 37 Powerline Worker apprentices, five Asset Inspector trainees, five new Field Operations Trainees and three apprentice Zone Substation Electrical Technicians.

It represents an increase of more than 20 per cent on their 2021 intake.

In addition, four new graduates are working in the Engineering and Information Technology group.

“Four years into our refreshed career pathways program, our business is reaping the benefits.

“We are seeing strong retention and the people joining us through this program are progressing through the identified career pathways,” Mr Jenner said.

“Our newest powerline apprentices will undertake a four-year program, combining formal training with on-the-job experience, covering all aspects of operating a modern electricity network.”

The Indigenous Pre-Employment Program has recruited five Field Operations Trainees who commenced with the apprentice intake.

“This program continues to provide a career pathway for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women into the business,” he said.

The apprentices and trainees represent locations from across the network footprint: Barham, Bathurst, Berrigan, Blayney, Bombala, Bulahdelah, Buronga, Casino, Cobar, Cooma, Coonabarabran, Coonamble, Cowra, Dubbo, Gloucester, Griffith, Hillston, Kempsey, Leeton, Lismore, Molong, Moruya, Narrabri, Nyngan, Orange, Parkes, Tamworth, Taree, West Wyalong, Young.

The new apprentices, trainees and graduates come from a diverse range of backgrounds, with 40 per cent of the new Apprentices and Trainees identifying with at least one diversity group, including 16 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and four females.

“I’m thrilled to welcome these new colleagues to Essential Energy and wish them all the best in their roles with us,” Mr Jenner said.

Outback Arts welcomes Harvey and Peters back

Local artists, Kylie Harvey and Seigrid Peters have been re-elected to the Outback Arts board at their annual general meeting last week.

The board has welcomed several new members this year while also farewelling others who have diligently supported Outback Arts and represented their communities.

The Outback Arts board is made up of seven Shire representatives and three independents who have an interest in arts and culture in our communities. The board representatives provide Outback Arts with a diverse range of professional skills and a contact point for communication within each community.

Walgett-based Casey Marshall-Siemer was welcomed back as Chairperson with Mrs Harvey elected as vice-chair.

Coonamble High School Visual Arts teacher Catherine Goldsmith was re-elected as the Board’s third Community Representative.

Outback Arts farewelled Warren Shire Council’s previous representative, Pauline Serdity who has been on the Outback Arts board for nearly 20 years. Warren Shire Council’s representative Councillor Ros Jackson has taken on the treasurer’s role.

Another long-term board member, Jane Keir will be moving on from representing Walgett Shire Council after contributing her expertise for nearly 15 years, joining the board in 2008.

Walgett Shire Council’s new representative is Councillor Sue Currey.

After three years, Outback Arts are sad to see Veneta Dutton move on as Bogan Shire Council’s representative with Councillor Greg Deacon to fill her place.

Doctor Sally will remain as Bourke Shire Council’s representative in 2022 and as a reelected Councillor, Donna Jeffries will continue to represent Brewarrina Shire Council on the board. Councillor Barbara Deans has also been put forward to represent Coonamble Shire Council once again.

After serving for the past year as Cobar Shire Council’s representative to the board, Seigrid Peters was also returned as Cobar Shire’s representative at last week’s AGM. Outback Arts are looking forward to the year ahead and a number of exciting projects being planned by the 2022 board.

Easter bunny pays a visit

The Easter Bunny paid a special visit to Drummond Park on Tuesday as part of Cobar Mobile Children’s Service’s Easter-themed playgroup session. Judy Toomey from Toomey’s Tunes was also there to run a music session. Pictured above are some of the kids and mums who attended.

Cobar Arts Council executive were all re-elected Cobar Arts Council’s annual general meeting was recently held in the Railway Station waiting room, with a good roll up of interested attendees.

The retiring committee members all ‘threw their hats into the ring’ again and were duly re-elected under the guidance of president Lillian Simpson.

Two new members were also welcomed and their enthusiasm to be involved in the group’s creative activities will be invaluable.

A paper making workshop using recycled materials was discussed at the meeting.

The workshop is proposed to be held this month to enable participants to enter their finished products in this year’s Cobar Show.

Plans for Arts Council to contribute an exhibit in the Cobar Show Community Display section were also tossed round at the meeting.

It was determined that members will meet again this month to consolidate the display prior to the Cobar Show on May 20 and 21.

Cobar Arts Council secretary Susan Singleton is currently investigating booking classical pianist Roman Rudnytsky to return for a recital in July.

Roman’s usual biennial concert tour has been thrown out of whack due to the COVID pandemic and overseas travel restrictions.

Hopefully 2022 will see him performing once again in Cobar.

The missing theatre curtains, part of Cobar Arts Council’s portable stage, have finally come to light and are now stored with the Arts Council’s gear.

It was a warm start to the working week with the mercury reaching 29.8 degrees on Monday in Cobar.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology Tuesday topped out at 31 degrees.

That’s well above the long term average of 25.4 which is the ‘norm’ for this time of year.

Prior to that, we had a mild weekend with 25.3 the maximum temperature on Saturday and 28.4 was the top on Sunday.

Friday’s top was slightly lower with 24.8 degrees the maximum while Thursday recorded a top of 27.2 degrees.

There were also some cooler overnight temperatures recorded with Cobar residents waking up to a very fresh 10.7 degrees on Saturday morning.

That’s below the long term average for this time of year of 12.9 degrees.

The forecast for the week ahead is continuing mostly mild days and also some possible showers.

The mercury is expected to reach a top of 28 today and 27 tomorrow with a chance of rain expected on both days.

It’s much the same for the weekend with the Bureau predicting 26 on Saturday with a chance of a shower or two and Sunday should be partly cloudy with a maximum of 28 degrees.

The forecast for Monday is mostly sunny with a top daytime temperature of 29.

Outback art

UNSW signs on to Cobar basin research The University of NSW (UNSW) has joined the Mineral Exploration Cooperative Research Centre (MinEx CRC) as a partner on a number of projects including detecting the underlying mineralisation in the Cobar basin.

The CRC is the world’s largest mineral exploration collaboration, bringing together 46 industry, government and research organisations.

The MinEx CRC has total funding of $220 million which includes $91 million in cash from the CRC program, industry and geological surveys.

Its aim is to further our understanding of geology, mineral deposits and groundwater resources in areas where rocks aren’t exposed at Earth’s surface.

Professor David Cohen at UNSW Science, the lead investigator for the University, said UNSW has a long tradition of research and teaching in economic geology and mineral exploration.

“Our participation in the MinEx CRC will build on that history and expertise,” Professor Cohen said.

“Two-thirds of Australia’s export income comes from minerals, and the mining sector generates over $200 billion or 10.5 per cent of our GDP, bringing much-needed employment to regional areas.

“The transition to a future low-carbon and high-tech economy is underpinned by the supply of critical minerals.

“That supply won’t materialise unless we find new deposits,” he said.

MinEx CRC CEO Andrew Bailey welcomed the University as a partner.

“Among other projects, UNSW is currently undertaking research to determine the effectiveness of pine needle geochemistry to detect underlying mineralisation in the Cobar Basin – and companies are showing strong interest,” Mr Bailey said.

The research project ‘Biogeochemical mapping of the Cobar Basin’, funded by the MinEx CRC, is being undertaken by PhD candidate Joe Schifano at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES).

Mr Schifano has found the gold content of cypress pines to be very strong indicators of nearby gold deposits in the Cobar region, with some of the highest gold concentrations ever recorded in pine needles.

Among its various research programs, MinEx is developing the highly innovative coiled tube drilling technology that will deliver more pro-

ductive, safer and environmentally friendly drilling in discovery and evaluation of mineral deposits.

A major challenge for the exploration sector is the development of techniques that can ‘see through’ thick sediment cover to detect mineral deposits contained within the underlying basement rocks.

These techniques will assist and encourage more exploration in vast areas of Australia where such cover dominates the landscape.

“The MinEx CRC brings together the core Earth science disciplines – geologists, geochemists and geophysicists – and puts them in the same room as engineers, physicists and IT specialists to develop more efficient mineral exploration methods,” said MinEx Chief Scientific Officer Dr David Giles.

Flickering lights

A number of Cobar residents have reported this past week that there lights have been flickering.

Essential Energy advises the electricity supply to Cobar had to be shared with the mine supply on Friday evening, to best ensure network safety on the electricity network between Cobar and Nyngan.

The network remained in that configuration until around lunchtime on Tuesday before being returned to the normal network configuration. The flickering issues were reportedly due to equipment starting up at the mine and momentarily dipping the supply to town.

The matter should now be rectified but any residents sill experiencing problems are urged to contact Essential Energy.

Could this be The IPTAAS review raised in parliament Weekly’s best competition ever?

Here at The Cobar Weekly we’ve had some great responses to our competitions over the years, especially our colouring-in competitions.

So we’ve decided to run another competition just in time for the Easter School holidays. (See Page 20 for full details on how to enter.)

We think this could possibly be the biggest and best competition than any we’ve run before, as this time we are offering a huge haul of amazing prizes to not one, but four lucky winners!

The first prize in the Senior category (7-12 years) is a real cracker, donated by David Harrison from the Janaree SheepMaster stud.

The winner will receive a three nights accommodation package in a six berth cabin at David’s Wakiti Creek Resort near Echuca.

The prize is valued at $500 and includes canoe hire, a bottle of wine and marshmallows to toast on the campfire.

The winner in the Junior section (six years and under) will receive a Family Pass to Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The next two most creative entries (in either category) will be selected by our judges and they will also receive prizes.

Stationery Essentials has donated a Moki wireless Bluetooth pocket speaker and Anni’s Arts and Crafts has given us an Easter toy and creative pack to give away.

Entries need to be returned to our office by 5pm Monday April 11, to go into the judging.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler has once again raised his concerns about the inadequacy of IPTAAS, the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme.

“In February 2021 I was given a promise by the NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard that he would review IPTAAS. “This scheme is meant to offset the cost of travel for essential medical needs of people in remote communities,” Mr Butler said.

“He promised that review within six months, and although the pandemic no doubt got in the way, with some of the worst COVID outbreaks taking up the Minister’s time for several months, it has now been over a year and there is still no review.”

Dr Joe McGirr MP recently brought the matter up at a Parliament Public Interest Debate (PID).

“It gave me an opportunity to talk about the inadequacy of the rates, which only subsidise 22 cents per kilometre of the travel, only a portion of taxi travel and a small amount of the accommodation,” Mr Butler said.

“There are also several other key problems with IPTAAS. The forms are complex, which can deter people from applying for the subsidies, which is made worse by the lack of reliable connectivity.

“People involved in clinical trials are ineligible for IPTAAS which means trials most likely don’t get enough data from regional areas.

“The services are also only available locally,” Mr Butler said.

“For IPTAAS to work the Government needs to centralise medical services and make sure they are fully supported, raise the subsidy rates, improve the application process and include clinical trials.”

Bush Fire Danger Period ends The mandatory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) ended at midnight on March 31 in the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Far West area.

The Far West area includes the local government areas of Bourke, Brewarrina, central Darling, Cobar and the Unincorporated area.

From April 1 residents will no longer require a permit for lighting a fire for burning off, however burn offs on properties will still need to be registered on the NSW Rural Fire Service Notify database.

Standard conditions still apply when burning such as notifying neighbors, notifying your

local fire brigade, installing fire breaks around the area to be burnt, ensuring a responsible person is in attendance and having a supply of firefighting equipment in working order on site.

The online tool makes it easier to notify the NSW RFS before conducting your burn.

If fire services know about a planned burn, it can help prevent unnecessary responses from local firefighters when they know it is planned and controlled.

The online burn notification tool can be found at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or call your local Fire Control Centre and they can assist.

Chief Executive Officer The Cobar Local Aboriginal Land Council is seeking suitable applicants for the above position. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will be responsible to the Members and will report to the Chairperson and Board of Directors.

DUTIES: To undertake duties involving the day-to-day administration and financial management of the Land Council in accordance with the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (1983). This will include maintaining the organisation's policies and guidelines in its endeavours to achieve community objectives set out in the Community Land and Business Plan, with an emphasis on submissions, maintaining accountability and capacity building. We also manage a growing housing stock of 27 properties & additional blocks of land.

ESSENTIAL: Applicants must have experience in office management and administration, the ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively with Aboriginal people.

Carswell and Toomey team up to claim Yabbies trophy The Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club 2021/2022 season came to an end on Tuesday night.

As is tradition on the final night, the Brace Relay competition was held with the champions, John Carswell and Scott Toomey, finishing with an overall time of just 8.56 seconds off their nominated times for the five events.

Murray Harland and Bob Clark got off to a great start winning the first event, the 2x 50m relay, after finishing within 0.37 seconds of their nominated time. (Carswell and Toomey also had a good start, with 1.09 seconds off their time in third place.)

The champions however hit a hurdle in the noodle race and finished 4th with 3.34 seconds off their time, well behind the race winners, Bill Fugar and Chris Powell with 1.84 off their time.

Carswell and Toomey regained some ground in collecting the coins off the bottom of the pool event finishing second with 4.53 behind Harland and Clark on 4.34.

The writing however was pretty much on the wall when Carswell and Toomey won the Arms Race with 5.06 seconds off their time and three seconds better than the rest of the field.

A five second win in the Slide Ride helped to get the trophy engraved with the pair finishing the five events with an eight second overall lead over Stephen Clark and Jason Toomey with Fugar and Powell back in third place.

The spoils were shared around at last Tuesday’s swim which was the final chance for championship points.

Matt Harland threw down the gauntlet in the opening event, the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim, and swam spot on his nominated time to win from Bill Fugar, second with 0.04 seconds off his nominated time, and narrowly back in third place was Chris Powell (0.09).

Lucas Hardy brought the heat in the 50m swim to claim a narrow 0.01 second win over Scott Toomey. Hardy clocked 0.15 seconds off his time while Toomey finished with 0.16.

Further back in third place was Paul Swainston with 0.40 seconds off his nominated time.

Stephen Clark blitzed the 100m field to win with 0.03 seconds off his nominated time.

The real race was between second and third with Swainston claiming second (0.41) and Toomey was third (0.43).

Swainston was back on the podium after he teamed up with Murray Harland to win the Brace Relay (side stroke) novelty event.

Cross, Fugar and Morton claim wins Daphne Cross, Brenda Fugar and Robynne Morton were the winners of the three ladies golf games played last week.

Cross held off Marlene Wynd in a countback for first place in last Wednesday’s Stableford game after each scored 34 points.

A close third was Morton with 33 points while Susan Goonrey was next best with 31.

The Nearest the Pin winners on the 11th hole were Fay Hardwick, Marlene Wynd and Glenda Peebles.

There was a good turn out for Saturday’s Par game with 13 players taking on the dusty course.

Fugar had a great win after finishing with a score of +2.

Cross had an even card to finish second while Karen Manns placed third on a count-

back from Jannine Wilkin after each had -3.

Goonrey grabbed 5th position with -4.

Hardwick once again was the A Grade pin winner on the 15th hole and Sue Phillips was closest for B Grade. No C Graders stayed on the fairway to collect a prize.

Morton won Sunday’s Stableford with 31 points.

Hot on her heels were Hardwick, Peebles and Serena Fraser who all scored 30 points.

Those closest to the flag on the 7th hole were Morton, Ann Dunn and Peebles.

A Stableford will be contested on Saturday and Sunday’s game is a Par event.

The Nyngan Vets will also hold their men’s and women’s tournament on Saturday for the ‘oldies’ who are up for a change of scenery.— T’d Off

Golfie bowlers adapt to fast greens The Golfie’s greenkeeper Stuart Simpson’s perfectly manicured greens proved be running too fast for most of the 20 bowlers who rolled up for social bowls on Sunday.

High scoring touch semi final games Despite low player numbers, there were still some high scoring games played in the Junior Touch Football semi final decider matches last Thursday afternoon at Ward Oval.

The winners from each match, Blue Smurfs, and The Big Pineapples in Juniors, and Blue Berries and Green Bwoins in the Seniors division, have earned themselves spots in tonight’s grand finals.

In the Juniors game last week, Blue Smurfs finished with a very comprehensive 19-2 win over the Orange Rangas, and The Big Pineapples also finished with a big 14-3 victory over Red Rockets.

In the Senior games, Blue Berries beat Red Termites 14-4 while the Green Bwoins had the closest win of the night, with a 12-9 victory over Yellow Bellies.

Two one-sided games were played in the darts competition last Wednesday night with Golfie Dartaholics dominating Empire Barflies to win 8-3 and RSL also won 8-3 over Golfie Spearchuckers.

In the other game, which was a closer contest, Golfie Gophers finished as 7-4 winners over Empire Pirates.

An introduction to netball

The Cobar Netball Association held a Come and Try Day at the Ward Oval netball courts on Saturday to introduce players five years and up to the sport. Juniors program coordinator Alex Brown said they had a great morning with the Net, Set, Go coaches and 12 participants who had fun playing small-sided games that focused on the basic skills of netball. “Net, Set, Go is for children aged 5-10, and Junior netball is for kids aged 11-14,” Mrs Brown said. The Cobar Roosters Under 18s rugby league side had their first hit out of the season in Gulgong on Saturday. The team had been preparing to contest the Castlereagh Youth League Knockout however it ended with the Cobar side only getting one game against a combined Dunedoo/Coonamble team. The Cobar boys, with no subs themselves, finished with a dominant 34-0 win. CHS wins soccer thriller after a penalty shootout The Cobar High School (CHS) Girls Soccer team pulled off a thrilling 2-0 victory over Lithgow last week.

The Open Girls Knockout match was played in Cobar last Thursday with the Cobar side eventually winning the match following a tense penalty shootout.

After what had been a nail-biter of a game, the scores were locked at 0-all at fulltime, and the match went to a penalty shootout to find a winner.

Cobar had a strong defensive team in Neve Carter, Macee Brown, Elleise Woodbridge, Sophie Clark, Sarah Nicholson and Willow Raffaele who ensured any breakaway Lithgow players were chased down and denied any opportunities to score.

The CHS midfield of Kelsey Neve, Bridgette Negfeldt, Tanna Grentell, and Maddie Bruce worked tirelessly together to maintain possession, which CHS had for most of the game, and they were constantly looking for opportunities to kick through the gaps to their forwards, Aisha Schofield, Sarah Morley and Sosie Barton to give them opportunities to score.

Several breakaways by Aisha throughout the game looked promising and, on three occasions, it looked certain that she was going to score, however each attempt was thwarted.

Lithgow managed to break through Cobar’s defensive wall to put the ball in the back of the net, however an offside call kept CHS in the game and they held on to that chance.

When the match went into extra time, penalty goals were netted by Aisha and Sarah in , but Cobar’s true MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the match was their goal keeper, Bella Morton.

Bella committed to stopping every ball, throwing her hands and body at the ball and at the Lithgow players feet in the box at all times.

She denied every shot at goal during the penalty shoot out, and CHS finished as 2-0 winners.

Coach Alex Brown said the girls’ teamwork, positivity and support were “phenomenal”, and it sure had been a brilliant game to watch!

CHS will now play either Gulgong or Orange in the next round to be played early next term.

New coaches and faces in Roosterettes 2022 line-up A new-look Cobar Roosterettes League Tag team (under the guidance of one of their new co-coaches Brennah Aumua) contested the 2022 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League Tag knockout competition at Gulgong on Saturday.

The Cobar Roosterettes ran into COVID isolation trouble at the back end of last week and were only able to travel with nine players.

Their team included an ‘on loan’ Camels rugby union ladies player and they were also helped out with two Gilgandra players on the day filling in to give them a full side.

They played two games going down to the new team in the competition this season, Narromine, 36-4, (with Roosterettes’ new recruit Georgia Wilson scoring Cobar’s try) and they also lost 18-0 to the overall knockout winners, Baradine.

Coach Aumua said while the team found themselves short on numbers and they had two losses, all her players still showed a positive attitude on the field.

“They never dropped their heads and still gave it their all,” Brennah said.

She said with a number of new players this season, some of whom are new to playing football, they still have some work to do in preparation for their first competition game against Gilgandra at the end of the month.

At Saturday’s knockout it seemed the Baradine side picked up from where they left off in season 2021.

The Magpiettes were leading the 2021 competition ladder when COVID bought a rapid halt to proceedings for the year after 17 rounds had been played.

On Saturday at Gulgong Baradine signaled they were again one of the sides to beat for premiership honours this season.

The Black and Whites won all four of their

games on Saturday, defeating the Narromine Jets 22-12 and Cobar 18-0 in their pool games.

They accounted for Narromine again in the semis (32-0) and then also soundly beat the Gilgandra Pink Panthers 24-0 in the final.

Attention now swings to the senior rugby

league sides who will all be lining up at Gilgandra this Saturday for their annual knockout.

Cobar will meet Gulgong in Round 1.

The Cobar Roosters Under 18s are also expected to get another pre-season game at Gilgandra on Saturday.

The Cobar Roosterettes struggled to field a full side for their first hit out of the 2022 Castlereagh season for the League Tag Knockout on Saturday in Gulgong. The Cobar girls only travelled with a team of nine (which included a ladies rugby union player) and they also needed the help of two Gilgandra players so they could play with a full side.

Great games for Fast5 semi finals

The semi final games of the Fast5 netball competition were played on Tuesday night with Watch & Learn and Why Did We Say Yes? (WDWSY) winning their matches to progress to next week’s grand final.

Watch & Learn, who finished first overall in the competition, were meant to have the easier game when they played 4th placed KML, but KML rose to the occasion this week and well and truly gave Watch & Learn a run for their money. At the end of the first quarter KML had a 5-4 lead and the scores were locked at 9all at half time.

Sensational shooting from KML’s Lauren Lamond, Elleise Woodbridge, Corinne and Mia McLeod made for a thrilling second half but the cool heads of Watch & Learn’s netball pro’s, Alex Brown, Kym Sutton and Sally O’Brien, controlled the final quarter to see them through to a 23-19 win.

WDWSY, who finished the season second on a countback, had the tough match this week, taking on third placed Fast Fobs, who have been steadily improving as the season progresses.

Both sides were missing key players this week but WDWSY got off to a great start to lead 13-3 at half time. Fast Fobs narrowed the gap in the third quarter to seven points and they outpointed WDWSY 9-2 in the final quarter, but it was too little, too late and WDWSY finished with a 19-16 win.

In last week’s double header games, WDWSY beat KML 21-20 and Fast Fobs got a 33-20 win over Watch and Learn in Round 9. In the competition decider games in Round 10, CynSteel were eliminated on a ‘for and against’ countback after their 25-16 win over KML, with KML grabbing 4th spot.

The Round 10 match between Watch and Learn and WDWSY ended in a 21-all draw and a countback was also needed to determine Watch and Learn would be minor premiers.

These two teams meet next Tuesday night in the grand final which is sure to be a thriller!

CHS net a 2-0 win in opening round

The Cobar High School Girls Soccer team won 2-0 over Lithgow in the opening round of the High School Open Girls Soccer Knockout competition last Thursday in Cobar. With the scores locked at 0-all at fulltime, the match went to a penalty shoot-out to find a winner.
