StormCo gang brings some holiday fun

The StormCo students and their supervisors from the Avondale School are back in Cobar this week to put smiles on the faces of Cobar residents, young and old. It’s the 30th year of the school providing their StormCo community service to NSW. This week they are running their traditional school holiday free Kids Club activities at the primary school for kids aged 5-12 years with clowns, stories, songs, games, puppets, balloons and craft activities (as pictured above). The gang will also be doing some community service work around town and this year that includes helping Cobar Shire Council to clean up the Children’s War Memorial Hostel Hall in readiness for COOSH (Cobar Out Of School Hours care) to move into.

Cobar Vinnies volunteer Lenny Fitton acted as emcee for the dedication ceremony and explained that unveiling the plaque was part of the St Vincent de Paul Society’s ‘Vision for Reconciliation’.

He explained how the Vinnies’ Reconciliation Action Plan came about.

“They consulted and yarned, and produced a set of documents, Guiding Principles, Cultural Protocol, an Implementation Strategy and the actual Reconciliation Action Plan itself,” Mr Fitton said.

“In the plan, we read that: Our vision for reconciliation is for a just and equitable society, a society characterized by strong and meaningful relationships between the First Peoples of Australia and non-indigenous Australians, a society in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, histories, knowledges and connections to country are valued and celebrated,” Mr Fitton said.

A number of special guests were welcomed to the ceremony and among them were: local Aboriginal elder, Elaine Ohlsen (who delivered the Welcome to Country); Cobar Catholic Church parish priest, Fr Paul Finucane (who spoke about the importance of family, in particular the high regard and respect that Aboriginal people have for their families); and also Jesse Cochrane Adolfson from Murdi Paaki (who gave an overview of the work the St Vinnies Conference does in Cobar).

Cobar High wins Outback Science & Engineering Challenge Cobar High School last week won this Cobar High School principal Shane Carter year’s Outback Science & Engineering said the win was a fantastic result.

Cobar High had 32 students competing in this year’s challenge and they were pitted against students from five other schools in the region.

Students competed in various challenges throughout the day ranging from building a Mars rover to creating a turbine.

Going into the final event, the bridge building challenge, Cobar High was in the lead, with Broken Hill High closely behind.

Broken Hill submitted their bridge which was able to support 750g.

The fantastic work from the Cobar High team, saw their bridge support 5kg which helped them to secure the Challenge win for Cobar High School.

Cobar scored 1,310 points overall and their win now places them in contention to be invited to the state final, later in the year, in Newcastle.

Police are investigating a break and enter offence to a business in Cobar’s main street last Thursday.

It’s believed to have occurred sometime between 12.30am and 3am when a man forced entry into the store taking approximately $2,000 worth of clothing and footwear and a sum of cash.

The man wanted for questioning was wearing a blue football jersey and was seen to exit a truck transporting cars (described as having a brown body with black stripes) at around 9pm. Police would also like to speak to the driver of that truck.

Anyone who may have seen the man or the vehicle matching this description or may have information to assist police is urged to contact Cobar Police or Crime Stoppers.

More awards for Cobar Museum The Great Cobar Museum revamp project has won a few more awards with Dunn and Hillam Architects announced among the winners of the 2022 NSW Architecture Awards on Friday.

The Great Cobar Museum project won the Creative Adaptation Heritage Architecture award and Dunn and Hillam Architects also won the EmAGN (emerging) Project Award for their Cobar project.

All of the NSW winners now progress to compete at the National Architecture Awards program with the national winners announced at the end of the year.

Local landholders learn about ‘grazing naturally’ methods Western Local Land Services (Western LLS) held a grazing naturally field day at Tiltagoona, near Cobar, last week with 20 people attending.

Bryant said the field day, which included a ‘grazing naturally’ session with Dick Richardson from Natures Equity, was very successful.

“It covered a number of topics including the principles behind grazing management, how to

use these principles to maximise productivity and improvement of the soil and how carbon cycles on farms.

“Attendees saw these practices in action through observing infrastructure improvements such as fencing and water points and were shown how to observe pasture species and soil to determine grazing management decisions,” Ms Bryant said.

Following the morning session, attendees had a field trip in the afternoon, led by Mr Richardson and field day host, George Millear, owner of Tiltagoona.

Mr Millear purchased Tiltagoona in 2003 and has been focused on rebuilding and improving the property as well as developing his skills in running a sustainable, resilient and profitable business.

He has undertaken a number of training courses that have been key to improving his management and decision making.

Mr Millear runs a White Dorper breeding enterprise and some cattle when feed is abundant at Tiltagoona.

He has intentions of moving into trading and agistment to allow him more flexibility and control of grazing pressure across different seasons.

The fluctuating seasonal conditions in the Western Division have demonstrated to him how management needs to be very flexible and also the need to capitalise on opportunities when they arise and not be afraid to sell down stock heavily when seasons turn.

Time to book in a fire safety visit

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is encouraging Cobar residents to book a fire safety visit to help protect themselves and their loved ones.

FRNSW Deputy Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said each year approximately 20 people die in NSW from fires that could have been prevented.

“Sadly, almost all of these fatalities occur in people’s homes.

“Each death is a tragic loss for families, friends and the wider community”, Deputy Commissioner Fewtrell said.

“Additionally, for each fire fatality, there are also hundreds more people who survive a fire but suffer life-changing health consequences.”

Deputy Commissioner Fewtrell said firefighters are committed to reducing the risk of such fires and also to protecting the irreplaceable.

A fire safety visit by a local firefighter can help do that.

“During safety visits, firefighters will check that you have working smoke alarms, that they are in good working condition, and are installed in suitable areas.

“If you do not have one, firefighters will install a long-life battery-powered smoke alarm as well as replace existing smoke alarm batteries, all at no cost,” he said.

“Firefighters will also ask residents to show them around their homes, so they are able to provide personalised fire safety information on issues such as kitchen fires, heaters and open fires, common electrical safety, barbeques and wheat bags.

“They can also provide advice on best protecting your home in the event of a bushfire.”

Cobar Station 256 Acting Captain Mat Hunter encouraged local residents to book a safety visit as soon as possible.

“The safety visits program draws on historical data about where fires occur and the reasons why so we can target areas with an increased fire risk across NSW and help prevent fires from occurring,” he said.

“Firefighters can also help develop a home fire escape plan and tell you how and when to call Triple Zero (000) in the event of an emergency.”

Residents are advised that due to COVID19, firefighters will take safety measures such as wearing masks and practice physical distancing during all of their safety visits.

Contraception: myths and facts Cobar residents have access to specialised reproductive and sexual health services provided at free monthly clinics.

Family Planning NSW offers clinics for sexual health checks, contraception advice, IUD and implant information, cervical screening, puberty and menopause advice, pregnancy options and more.

Family Planning NSW Medical Coordinator Dr Hilary Bower, who travels from Sydney to Cobar for the regular monthly clinics at Cobar Community Health, explains there are many myths around contraception.

“Contraception or birth control has been a common choice for Australians since the early 1960s, when “the pill” first hit our shelves, “ Dr Bower said.

“In Australia the most commonly used contraception is ‘the pill’.

“The pill has dominated the contraceptive landscape for many years, however other options are increasingly being used in Australia as doctors explain the benefits of longeracting solutions that don’t require the daily administration of a pill.

“Even though the pill is the most commonly used contraceptive, it is not the most effective!” Dr Bower clarified.

“Research shows the pill can be over 99 per cent effective with “perfect use”, which entails taking it at the same time each day.

“The problem is that humans are prone to errors, so with “real use”, it’s only about 93 per cent effective (meaning that seven out of every 100 women on the pill will become pregnant in a given year).”

When asked if long term contraception like IUDs make it hard to get pregnant later, Dr Bower said this is definitely a myth.

“We call these options LARCs, which stands for “long-acting, reversible contraceptives”.

“IUDs and the contraceptive implant are the most effective contraceptive options we have on the market, and once the device is removed, your fertility should bounce back straight away!

“The only contraception that can delay fertility is Depo Provera injections, which might prevent you becoming pregnant for a period of approximately 12 months after your last shot.

“However, there is no evidence of long-term harm to a person’s fertility from this option,” Dr Bower said.

She said it’s a myth thinking that it’s good to take a break from the pill from time to time.

“Some people are concerned that being on

the pill for many years or decades could be a bad thing.

“What’s important to know is that the pill is very safe and has been studied very thoroughly. There is no reason taking a “holiday” from the pill would have any medical benefits, unless you were wanting to become pregnant!

“However, if you’re concerned about your experience on your pill, we can sit down with you and go through some other contraceptive options,” Dr Bower said.

“The pill can fix acne—this is a fact!

“The combined oral contraceptive pill can be a good treatment for acne while also preventing unwanted pregnancy.

“The way it works is that it reduces androgens in our body which can cause oily skin.

“Certain types of the combined pill may be more effective against acne than others – we are happy to discuss your options.”

Dr Bower is also happy to discuss a variety of other contraception options with Cobar residents, as well as a range of other sexual health topics.

Freezing weather

Cobar residents have shivered through some freezing weather over the past week with cloudy conditions and rain keeping temperatures down.

Friday started off very cold when the thermometer dipped down to 4.4 degrees before reaching a top of 13.5 during the day.

Saturday’s minimum temperature was 5.3 degrees and then it only climbed to a top of 11.3 degrees, which was our coldest day of the week.

Sunday was also chilly with a maximum daytime temperature of 11.7 degrees.

Up until 9am on Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology reports we received 3.8mm of rain which added to the weekend’s miserable, cold conditions.

The start of the working week was slightly warmer with Monday recording a minimum of 8.6 degrees before reaching 15.7.

The Bureau registered a further 2mm of rain in their gauge from scattered showers on Monday and up to 9am on Tuesday morning.

Tomorrow should be partly cloudy with a top of 16 while Friday is predicted to be colder with a maximum of just 14 degrees.

The expected top for Saturday is 15 while Sunday is forecast to only reach 16 degrees.

A CALL OUT TO COBAR LOCALS TO VOLUNTEER WITH VINNIES Vinnies is urgently looking for people wanting to give back to the Cobar community by volunteering with its Vinnies shop. There are also opportunities to join the local Vinnies Conference – which is a group of volunteers who provide assistance to those in need in the community. Assistance can include: food hampers, clothing, financial aid, accommodation and other assistance as required.

We have a lovely group of volunteers who have been able to make a positive impact in the local community. The events of the past year have highlighted the importance of community and looking out for people in need. Working in a Vinnies shop and conference is a great chance to meet excellent people and you get the satisfaction knowing that you are helping to support people who fall on hard times.

Vinnies operates 237 retail shops throughout NSW which offer a diverse range of pre-loved items for customers to purchase. The sales from our Vinnies shops are used by our Conferences to provide material and financial support to those in need.

Volunteering requires people to donate a few hours of their time each week to help with roles including customer service, sorting donations, assisting clients in need, maintaining the day-to-day running of the shop and conference and crucial admin support. Yabbies hold AGM The Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club held their annual general meeting last Tuesday night with not much changing in their executive line-up.

John Carswell was returned as president with Bill Fugar and Scott Toomey also returned as vice presidents.

Bob Clark was uncontested for the secretary’s position and Harley Toomey also retained the treasurer’s role. Murray Harland was again voted in as club captain with Paul Swainston returned as vice captain.

There was one change to the executive with Paul Swainston and Matt Harland taking on the handicapper’s role.

In his president’s report to the meeting, Carswell reported on another good season for the club.

Dates were announced for the Four Way Carnival (which the Cobar club will be hosting in conjunction with the club’s reunion in October), the Setts Memorial Swim (which Cobar will also host in December), the Western Districts Carnival to be held at Wellington in February 2023 and the National AIF Carnival at Coogee in March next year.

Club secretary and Yabbies 50 Years Reunion coordinator, Bob Clark, gave an update on the organizational plans for the reunion advising that representatives from 14 clubs (approximately 100 swimmers) have indicated they will be attending.

Clark said that however doesn’t include a number of ex-Yabbies who have also declared their interest in attending.

Camels were at their season’s best at Coonamble The Cobar Camels travelled to Coonamble by bus with only 12 men on Saturday for their Round 9 Western Plains Rugby Union game.

While some players had to work it appears that the Duck Creek Races at Nyngan were more attractive to a number of other players.

The 12 who travelled all played above themselves and, at the half-time bell, were only behind 24-17 and still in the game.

The five Cobar supporters who travelled to watch the match were unanimous in declaring the Camels’ performance on Saturday as their “best all season”.

Their commitment to each other and their steely resolve to walk away at full-time victorious was extraordinary.

These 12 players must surely form the nucleus of the Camels for the remainder of the 2022 season on ability and commitment.

In Saturday’s game, Coonamble scored an early converted try but the Camels dominated in the forwards before prop Jayden Harvey smashed his way over the Coonamble line.

Coonamble scored again, being able to utilize a constant overlap to have the score at 14-5.

In the meantime, half back Jay Ellison consistently broke down Coonamble’s attack with some smashing defence.

Unfortunately, Winger Tyson Brilley was carried off with a knee injury.

The Camels were reduced to 11 men but a Coonamble bench player ran on for Cobar (contrary to his coach’s direction).

Cobar’s backline defence was outstanding with Kody Martin, Brandon ‘Chucky’ Jones and Jacob ‘Ping’ Ryan ably supporting Ellison.

Martin broke the Coonamble defence and with the ball kicked through, Lochlan Ford won the race to the ball to score.

After a similar move, Ford again won the race to the ball and scored his second try to bring the margin back to just two points, 17-19 in Coonamble’s favour.

In the second half the Camels were finally found wanting by Coonamble’s sheer weight of numbers however Ford continued to be a danger as he tried to vary the play and to use his exceptional pace.

The Camels forwards stuck to their task and matched Coonamble in both forward confrontations and the line-out.

And what a revelation Mitchell Dunne has been at hooker! The once aspiring breakaway has accepted that he can serve the team far better by turning up every week as hooker.

Harvey took the game by the throat from the first kickoff and lead by example all match.

The remaining forwards also played above themselves.

The final score was in the area of 59-17 but the Cobar players and supporters left Coonamble with a sense of satisfaction.

The Bactrians also fielded a team against their Coonamble hosts on Saturday.

They played to their ability but were defeated 13-1 by a strong Coonamble side.—Peter Payne

The Cobar Camels may have been short on players for their Western Plains Rugby Union Round 9 game at Coonamble on Saturday but what they didn’t lack was determination and heart. The side put in a great effort and only narrowly trailed by seven points at half time. Matt Russell claims Wednesday’s win Family rivalry in Matt Russell was in fine form for last Wednesday’s Men’s Golf Stableford competition.

He finished with a very good score of 42 points playing off a handicap of four to claim the win.

In second place was Greg Clark on 38 Stableford points and Corin AhSee finished in third place with 35.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Russell on the 3rd hole, Clark on the 7th, Steve Manns on the 8th and Colin ‘Butch’ Eves won the prize on the 15th hole.

A field of 21 players took part in the Polyfabrications sponsored three man Ambrose event on Saturday.

Finishing as winners were Peter Lawrence, Jason Hampel and Peter Robinson coming in with a score of 62 net.

In second place, with a net score of 62⅓, was the team of Steve Manns, Greg Clark and Scott Mayne while third place was taken out

by Jade Buckman, Peter Hannan and Brandt Patterson on 63 net.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were collected by

A group of 12 brave (or possibly stupid) golfers contested the Monthly Medal Stableford on Sunday in cold, damp weather.

The winner on the day on a countback was Men’s Golf captain Alec Fraser on 37 stableford points.

Chris Powell also finished on 37 points but had to settle for second place after a countback.

The over dressed Zach Finn finished in third place on 32 stableford points beating Peter Robinson on a countback, also on 32 points.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Stewart Fraser on the 3rd hole, Chris Powell on the 8th and 11th holes and Mark Fraser on the 15th.

This Saturday is Bannister Day, which will be played as a Stableford.

Sunday’s game is a Four-Ball-Best-Ball Stableford.

Mixed bag of results in soccer comp The results of Cobar Junior Soccer Club’s games on Saturday were a real mixed bag with a couple of drawn games, some onesided matches and also close competitions.

In the Minis division, Rangers and Liverpool played out a thrilling 2-all draw with goals scored by Ashton Hyland for Liverpool and Levi Prince and Darcy Geppert netted the points for their Rangers team.

Wanderers came out in front in their Minis game with Rovers to win 5-0.

There was no score recorded for the other Minis match between United and Chelsea.

The Minis Gumnuts Milkshake awards this week went to Henry Thompson, Ethan Jebb, Lila Beer, Juan Engelbrecht, Liam Peaty and Ashton Hyland while the Cobar Hotbake Donut Awards were earned by Dayna Armstong, Michael Arnold, Ford Ellison, Jack Preisig, Tom Geppert and Archie Fugar.

There was also a drawn game in the Mids competition, with the match between Rovers and United finishing locked up at 2-all.

Rovers’ two goals were scored by Mark McBride. Zara Patterson and Charlie Nicholson found the back of the net to score for their United team.

In the other Mids game, Rangers dominated

their match to finish with a big 8-1 win against Liverpool.

The goal scorers were Callum Bennet, Tom Preisig and Kyle Sithole.

The Mids Milkshakes Awards were collected

by Ryan Jiang, Hayden Betcke, Logan Fennamore and Callum Bennett.

The Mids Donut Awards were taken home

by Mark Hibbert, Jack Geppert, Indie Burke and Tom Preisig.

In the Seniors division, Spurs and Rangers were helped out by a few visitors.

It was a close game that Spurs eventually won 7-6.

Among the goal scorers for Spurs were Jeremy Theakston, Parker Cryer and Luke Guirin while Rangers’ points came from goals recorded by their fill-ins, Ikechukwu Iheanacho and Leo Silva.

Among the highlights of the game were a great header by Maddie Bruce and the superior goal-saving skills displayed by Paul Theakston.

For the Seniors, Parker Cryer and Chad Buckman earned the Gumnut Milkshake Awards while Jeremy Theakston and one of the visitors took home the Cobar Hotbake Donut Awards.

Geraldine Francisco had a win in last Wednesday’s Ladies Golf Stableford game scoring 34 points.

It was a close finish (and some family rivalry) for second place with Reina Cross, on 33 points, beating her mum, Daphne Cross, who also finished on the same score.

Closest to the flag on the 7th hole were Geraldine Francisco, Ann Dunn and Pat Polack.

The annual Polyfabrications sponsored three person Ambrose on Saturday was a test of the brave with sleet like rain and freezing wind for the last nine holes of the day.

The winning team on 71 2/3 net consisted of Fran Samios, Glenda Peebles and Daphne Cross. The runner-up team (on a countback) was Marlene Wynd, Julie Livingston and Geraldine Francisco with 74 net ahead of Karen Manns, Barb Barklimore and Sally Bannister in third spot.

Nearest the Pin winners were Marlene Wynd, Sally Bannister, Daphne Cross, Geraldine Francisco and Karen Manns.

After the atrocious conditions on Saturday and the weather forecast not looking much better for Sunday, the scheduled Pink Day on Sunday was postponed to a date yet to be fixed.

There were no objections from players as for once the weather forecasters were spot on.

Cobar played host to the Warren lady golfers last Friday in the Pennants competition with Cobar winning 4-1. Although it was a good result, Cobar will however not advance any further after having to forfeit their earlier match to Condobolin.

A Par round will be played today. A big turnout is expected for the annual Bannister’s Day Stableford on Saturday. A Stroke game is scheduled for Sunday.—T’d Off

Close start later finishes in big win David ‘Ooze’ Knight and John ‘Shark’ Daly played a Bowls Championship Pairs game against Michael Sargent and Tadgh Waugh on Sunday at the Golfie.

For eight ends both teams fought for single point wins and by the 13th end, Ooze and Shark were up by just one shot.

They dug deep and finished strongly for a 24-10 win which will see them go through to the second round.

In the Singles Championship game played between Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Bian Smith, Duck was victorious to proceed to Round 2.

The weather was very good for socializing and only two avid bowlers braved the chilly conditions and heavy rain soaked greens to play on Sunday morning. Obviously with the weather more conducive to ducks, Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond won over Karen Daly.

Cobar was recently represented at the Lightning Ridge Ladies Triples tournament where five rounds were played over two days.

Cobar’s team of Shine McIver, Marlene Wynd and Karen Daly joined other bowlers from all over the state as well as players from Victoria and Queensland.

While the Cobar team didn’t finish in the running for title, the trio certainly gave it their all.

Roosters juniors host two clubs for some close games Cobar Roosters Junior Rugby League hosted St John’s Gold and Narromine teams in very cold conditions at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday for Round 9 of the Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League Competition.

Most games were close, in particular the Under 12s match, where Cobar finished with a 20-16 win over St Johns Gold.

Tries for the Roosters were scored by Ryder Anderson, Corey Piggott, Aiden Hyland and Clay McDonald with Cohan Nicholson and Rowdy Barton responsible for a conversion each.

Ryder Anderson was named their Players’ Player with the Coaches Award earned by Billy George.

The win now puts the Cobar Roosters at the top of the table for Under 12s.

The Cobar Under 14s won their thriller of a game against Narromine by two points, 32-30.

Jaxon Burke led the try scoring for the Roosters with three tries, Axel Fairfull ran in two and Justin Bruce also crossed for Cobar.

Tim Eves was accurate with the boot finishing with four conversions.

Axel Fairfull was named their Players’ Player with the Coaches Award going to Blaire Drady.

There was just two points the difference in the Under 11s game with the St Johns Gold visitors snatching the 20-18 win.

Tries for Cobar were scored by Mason King and George McDonald (2) with Mason, George and Jaxon Waugh landing a goal each.

The Roosters’ Players’ Player was Jawayne Dodds with the Coaches Award earned by George McDonald.

The St Johns Gold Under 10s were too strong for the Roosters winning that game 42-4.

Tommy George was Cobar’s point scorer and also the recipient of the Coaches Award.

Their Players’ Player was London Hyland.

After a fairly close contest in the first half, the final score in the Under 16s game blew out in the second half with Narromine scoring a few runaway tries to finish as 44-4 winners.

Jamal Eves was Cobar’s lone try scorer with a brilliant team effort that saw him score in the corner.

Jamal also earned the Players’ Player award with the Coaches Award going to Charlie Crotty.

The Under 9s hosted the St Johns Gold team, with their match played at the Cobar High

Local students compete in Inter School Horse Event Zac Boland and Katie Nicholson recently represented Cobar High School at the Inter School Horse Event in Coonabarabran.

The event is the biggest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and this year was the 30th year it has been held in Coonabarabran.

Students and horses from all over NSW attended with a total of 540 students and 600 horses competing during the five days of competition.

This year’s conditions were not the best with riders and horses presented with cold, wet and muddy conditions.

Both of the Cobar riders did very well in their age groups up against some very tough competition.

The men’s highest score of the week was 180, recorded by Chris Hooker while Mescal Nicholls, with 133, had the ladies’ highest score.

Three good wins

Cobar Roosterettes’ fullback, Sarah Morley, attacking in the Castlereagh League Tag game at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday. Morley played her usual stand-out game to earn her side’s Best & Fairest three points up against Gulgong. A couple of runaway tries in the second half saw the visitors finish with a 22-8 win.

Roosterettes put up a good fight For much of their Round 10 Castlereagh League Tag match on Saturday, the Cobar Roosterettes and Gulgong Terriers were evenly matched.

Played in extremely cold and damp conditions at Tom Knight Memorial Oval, the Gulgong visitors had the bulk of possession for most of the first half however it was Cobar who scored first points.

Brianna Watson, Sarah Morley and Tyler Chiswick (Watson) had made a number of breaks before Chiswick’s neat short pass to Aisha Schofield found the mark and Schofield ducked over untouched to score four minutes

The arm wrestle continued into the second half before the Terriers locked up the score at 4-all when they scored after sustained pressure on the line.

The visitors then took the lead soon after when a 40m run ended in a converted try.

Gulgong kept probing and scored two more unconverted tries to push their lead out to 18-4.

Watson swiveled through the Gulgong defence eight minutes out from fulltime to score Cobar’s second try (and she just missed the conversion) to close the margin to 18-8.

A late try by Gulgong in the final minute pushed their winning margin out to 22-8.

Cobar’s Best & Fairest points went to Sarah Morley (3 points), Sophie Clark (2 and Players’ Player) and Phoebe Pursehouse collected one point on debut.

Nymagee Magpies, Divas and Pumpettes all finished with good wins in their Round 9 Senior Netball games last Tuesday night at Ward Oval.

Nymagee Magpies finished as 20 point winners over Gumnuts, 53-33.

Nymagee’s standouts were Peta Woods and Grace Burge while Gumnuts were well served

by Gaile Talu and Kylie Marsden.

Divas finished with a confident 40-17 win over Real Steel in their match.

Showing her versatility as a defender and shooter, Diva Amie Hill collected the game’s Best & Fairest three points with teammate Rachel Simon also sharing in B&F points along with Real Steel’s Ashley Cousins.

In the late game, JKM looked very impressive on the court (maybe that was just their dance moves), but it was the Pumpettes who finished with a 48-27 win.

The match started off evenly with JKM up 11-10 at the first break before Pumpettes then settled into a good routine and outplayed JKM for the remainder of the game.

Pumpettes’ Sosie Barton and Jayme Francisco shared B&F points along with JKM’s Sophie Clark.

In Junior netball news, Cobar’s Ethan McLeod played at the State Junior Netball titles over the weekend with the Hunter Boys team.

At the end of a very wet Day 1, the boys were sitting in second place on the competition ladder in their age division (one point behind Liverpool) after winning four games, playing one draw and recording just one loss.

Organisers made the call to cancel Day 2 due to the severe weather and no winners were crowned this year.

Archers battle cold Archers battled the cold on Sunday for the Cobar Bowman Club’s monthly shoot.

Darren Myer-Ryan shot a good score of 698 in the Bowhunter unlimited class and Jake Ryan (first time shooting) finished with 316 (but only shot one round).

In the Recurves division, Darrel ‘Dasha’ Warren had a score of 476 and John Arnold, back shooting again finished with 296 (only one round) showing he hasn’t lost any skills.

Peter Rogers only shot one round as well with his trusty self bow and finished with a score of 250.

The big winner on the day was Josie MyerRyan with a great score of 508, which was a personal best for her.—contributed

Roosters cement top of the table status The Cobar Roosters cemented their top of the table status in the Christie & Hood Castlereagh Rugby League competition with a hard fought 24-16 win over Gulgong on Saturday.

The Round 10 match was played at Tom Knight Memorial Oval in atrociously cold and wet conditions with rain falling for most of the second half of the match.

The Roosters were out to avenge their earlier loss this season to Gulgong and they pressed that point home to the visitors right from the kick-off.

The Roosters’ line-up on Saturday had a slightly different look (they were missing both their halves, captain/coach Loma Atuau and veteran Jimmy Neyland).

They were however able to welcome back Ben Simon to their forward pack for his first run of the season.

Hooker Tom Plater moved to halfback and Ted Smith replaced Plater in hooker and both shone in their new roles.

Cobar had an early 10-0 lead after two consecutive tries were effortlessly scored by Nathan McAndrew, who made sure he was in the right place at the right time.

Gulgong then played themselves back into the game with two converted tries which saw them take the lead at 12-10, 15 minutes out from half time.

The Roosters however maintained their cool and their constantly attacking forwards probed the middle of the field on numerous occasions

looking for gaps before they sent the ball wide to winger Jack Brown.

Brown touched down in the corner to have the Roosters back in front at 14-12, which was also the margin at the halftime break.

The Roosters dominated possession in the second half and six minutes after the re-start (and on his second attempt), Plater stretched out to touch the chalk to re-open their scoring account.

Plater’s successful conversion of his try put Cobar further ahead at 20-12.

Misty rain settled in and the wet, slippery conditions meant a change of game tactics were needed for both teams.

The tired Gulgong side (who had just three subs on their bench) benefited most from slower play.

It also worked in the favour of the Roosters who were reduced to just 12 players when they had a player sent to the sinbin for 10 minutes.

The Roosters scrambled in defence and Gulgong’s opportunity to score when they found the overlap on the wing went begging when they rushed play and the ball went to ground.

Five minutes before fulltime, the rain abated and the Roosters were back to having a full side.

Plater reined in a kick in play from Gulgong and raced over to score his second try of the match.
