South of shire gets a soaking
Some fantastic falls of rain were recorded around the district this past week, with the south west of the shire copping a good soaking. While most parts of Cobar Shire have received above average rainfall in the past few months, the south-west of the shire hasn’t been as fortunate. However it was their turn to be on the receiving end last week. At Coomeratta Station, 150km west of Cobar, they received 71mm in their rain gauge and Bob Sinclair at Berangabah Station was also beaming after he recorded 58.4mm over two days. “We had a good start like this in 2012 and quite a good year in 2016 which also started with good rain,” Bob told The Cobar Weekly. “This bodes well for a good season. “The grasses are growing and it’s looking like everything’s going to go ahead,” Bob said. Further south the tally was even better with falls of up to 80mm recorded by one Ivanhoe landholder. At Nullagoola, west of Cobar on the Wilcannia Road, the Allens recorded 31mm while in the south east of the shire, the Burchers at Four Corners near Nymagee received 20mm. More rain fell in the district on Monday afternoon with the Bureau of Meteorology recording another 12.4mm in Cobar up to 9am yesterday morning. While today will remain fine, there could be a bit more rain on the way with the Bureau predicting a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms tomorrow, Friday and Saturday. It should be fine and sunny again on Sunday and Monday with both days expected to reach a top temperature of 31 degrees.

Ready for ‘Big school’
Preschool friends Willow Lennon and Maddox Best are heading off to ‘Big school’ with Willow starting Kinder at Cobar Public School on Friday while Maddox will spend his first day in Kinder at St John’s School on Monday. Both were excited about the prospect of heading off to school and are well prepared to start after they attended Kinder transition programs run last year by both schools which aim to help preschoolers get acquainted early with school life.
