CSA and Sandvik welcomed to Business Association’s party

The Cobar Business Association has started their Christmas celebrations early with the committee already in “party mode” after securing sponsorship for this year’s Christmas street parade.

Association president Sharon Harland said they were thrilled to be partnering with Glencore CSA Mine and Sandvik this year to make the 2021 Christmas Street Parade & Gala Shopping Night their best event yet!

“CSA and Sandvik’s combined sponsorship of $10,000 has been a fantastic boost for our planning this year.

“It will allow us to ramp up the night’s entertainment to include having a band play after the parade,” Mrs Harland said.

“We know that lots of families love coming out for the parade and the late night shopping experience.

“Having more entertainment, some of which will be specifically geared towards adults, will

now make it an event everyone can enjoy.”

CSA Mine general manager Peter Christen said they were pleased to be able to play a part in the event this year.

“It’s a great community event for small businesses and one that brings everyone together,” Mr Christen said.

“And especially this year after all of the COVID restrictions, it will be exciting to get the community back together.

“We’re proud to be part of that,” he said.

Mining contractor Sandvik, a global engineering group, are also pleased to be included in this year’s community Christmas event.

Sandvik’s technical sales representative Stephen Beeston said the company is keen to show off some of their new equipment, including a new LH517i Loader, that’s about to go to work underground at the CSA Mine.

Police investigations are continuing into a two-vehicle crash in Cobar last Tuesday, in which a man was critically injured.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Morrison and Marshall Streets at about 10.15pm on October 26, following reports a motorcycle and Toyota Prado had collided.

The 32-year-old motorcycle rider suffered critical injuries and was taken to Cobar Hospital before being airlifted to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.

He later died as a result of the injuries he sustained.

As is mandatory in an incident that results in serious injury, the driver of the Toyota, a 40year-old local woman, was taken to Cobar Hospital for testing.

Officers from Central North Police District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

They are appealing to anyone who may have seen the man riding the unregistered trail bike in or around the vicinity of Bathurst and Marshall streets immediately prior to the accident (between 10pm and 10.15pm) to come forward, particularly if they have any dashcam footage.

Mrs Harland said the annual Christmas Street Parade & Gala Shopping Night was created as a way to encourage locals to think about shopping locally, especially when they are doing their Christmas shopping.

“It’s grown over the years to become more than that and it’s become a celebration for the whole community.

“All of our local emergency services vehicles take part in the parade along with the Dust Bowl Fuel Burners and Fergie Tractors clubs, the schools, sporting and community groups,” Mrs Harland said.

“It’s also an opportunity for our home-based businesses and creative members of the community to hold a market stall to sell their products.”

Mrs Harland said the committee was pleased that Stationery Essentials will again be sponsoring the Best Dressed Elves/Fairies/ Santa’s Little Helpers competition this year.

“Everything is coming together really well,” she said.

“We’ve heard there will be a few new floats entering this year’s parade and they’ll have the chance to not only win the ‘Best Float’ or the ‘Spirit of the Parade’ awards but also some Cobar Quids prizemoney.

“Even Santa was impressed with our sponsorship news and has decided to bring Mrs Claus with him this year,” Mrs Harland said.

Cobar residents on alert with positive sewage test Cobar residents are warned to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 following a positive sewage detection last Monday.

Cobar Shire Council was advised on Friday morning that fragments of the virus had been found in tests taken on untreated sewage at the Cobar plant on October 25.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said the news was very concerning and, while he hoped that the positive test has come in response to someone who had passed through town, there is also a chance that someone in Cobar could unknowingly have the virus.

“Anyone with any of the slightest symptoms of COVID is urged to isolate and get tested as soon as possible,” Mr Vlatko said.

“While we have had two previous positive sewage tests but no positive cases in Cobar, we don’t want residents to become complacent.

“The best way to protect ourselves, our families and our community is to get vaccinated and get tested,” he said.

Since mid-August tests of our sewage have been carried out each week as part of the NSW Sewage Surveillance Program with the Cobar plant having recorded two previous positive tests on August 17 and August 21.

Locals not happy with camp decision Yench calls for spending to stop The news last week that the extension to the mining camp east of Cobar has now been approved is not sitting well with the Cobar community.

The matter was discussed at last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting with Cr Peter Yench calling for Council to take further action to fight the decision made by the NSW Land and Environment Court.

The Court found in favour of the camp’s owner, Rovest Holdings P/L, and their planned extensions to the existing camp to accommodate another 80 occupants, can now go ahead.

“I believe we should be putting in an objection to the ruling,” Cr Yench said.

Council’s director of planning and environmental services Garry Ryman advised the meeting that he did not believe Council could appeal the decision.

“My understanding is that’s there’s only an appeal against the decision of the Commissioner if it’s about a question of law, so if there was an error in that [Council could appeal], there’s not an appeal based on merit,” Mr Ryman said.

He told Councillors he would need to seek legal advice but believed Council could not appeal against the merit of the conclusion found by the Commissioner.

“He [the Commissioner] said the expansion of the miner’s camp was modest and likely to have little to no impact.

“That was his merit decision based on the evidence put forward and balancing up the advice from the two expert planners, the expert social person and the expert economic person,” Mr Ryman told Councillors.

“That was his conclusion which, from my understanding, is that it wouldn’t give you a right to appeal on a question of law.”

Mayor Peter Abbott said he was unsure as to how the Commissioner came to the decision when part of Council’s evidence was a 2,000odd petition signed by local residents who were opposed to the camp.

Cr Yench said similar mining camps had been rejected in Queensland and also in Singleton, “so how did they get away with it if we can’t?”

He then called for Council to lobby local politicians, State and Federal, to overturn the decision.

Mr Ryman advised that as the matter was a development/building application, politicians would have no jurisdiction when it comes to making changes.

Cr Jarrod Marsden questioned if Council had the power to amend the conditions of the development application if it could be proven the mining camp would have a detrimental effect on the town and community. He asked if it could be repealed later down the track.

Mr Ryman said the Court has issued the consent subject to conditions and there would be no opportunity to be adding conditions to it now.

“So the order is, the appeal was upheld and the consent was issued by the court,” he said.

Cr Yench suggested Council look at other avenues/charges or fees that could be levied on the mining camp “to help with the upkeep of the town”.

Mr Ryman said originally there may have been an opportunity to look at a voluntary planning agreement, “but our position was, we didn’t want it approved” and so that is now not an option.

The matter will go to a workshop where Council’s options will be discussed further.

Councillor Peter Yench has called for Cobar Shire Council to curb its spending and to not pursue any further grant opportunities for capital projects for the town.

“These grants are well and truly good, but at the end of the day we’ve got to pay them back and the grants we don’t pay back, we’ve got to pay for the maintenance and so forth,” Cr Yench said at Thursday’s Council Meeting.

“I don’t how much money we got in grants over the last 12 or 18 months but they all are at a cost to the ratepayer.

“The GM put in the paper a couple of months ago about all the grants we’ve been getting and how well we’ve been doing.

“That’s okay for today but tomorrow and the next day but when we start paying our rates and we’re going downhill, what are we going to do?

“Are we just going to keep putting the rates up and let the ratepayers pay and then people leave town?

“I just want to ask the councillors, before we overspend, is it time for a bit of a pullback?

“Let’s balance out our money and, that great monstrosity down at the Ward Oval, I’d like to know how we’re going to pay for that, another rate rise?” Cr Yench asked.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said Council had received about $68 million worth of grants over the past 18 months and he believed ratepayers were very appreciative of the improvements.

Cr Yench said the people who were coming to him had a different opinion “and they’re not real happy with the way we have been going”.

We are looking for a mix of people who live locally or are members of a community group (e.g. sporting association or local business) to join our committee.

Your role as a committee member is voluntary.

Selection criteria: You will be expected to contribute constructively to committee discussions, attend four meetings a year, and communicate information about the New Cobar Complex and Peak Complex between the committee and the broader community.

Applications must be lodged by Friday December 3, 2021 and sent to the independent chairperson of the Community Consultative Committee.

Departing firefighters praised for their service to Cobar Fire and Rescue NSW Station 256 Cobar last week farewelled two of their members, Mark Aumua and Chris Freeman.

Station 256 deputy captain Alex Lennon said they were sad to see both men go as they were part of their close-knit firefighting family.

“It’s no secret that Mark is one of the most genuine, trustworthy, kind, caring and compassionate people you could come across,” Alex said.

“We feel incredibly lucky that for the last eight years we have had the pleasure of working alongside this legend.

“He is someone that would look out for everyone both on the scene and behind the scenes, and was always willing to share his knowledge.

“Mark has made the decision to step back from his firefighting duties to spend some more quality time with his family.”

While Mark has “retired” Chris has “transferred” and will be joining the Fire and Rescue NSW team in Mudgee, where he has recently moved to join his young family.

“Chris has served the community of Cobar since July 2016, and in that time he has never failed to go above and beyond in every area.

I have served as a Cobar Shire Councillor since 2019 and my main focus has been on improving services for families, seniors and visitors to our town. I have been pleased to represent Council at the Cobar Tourism Committee’s regular meetings.

I am capable, reliable and believe I can get on well with a wide range of people.

I make it a priority to take particular care to listen to any community members who may have any concerns, requests or ideas that pertain to Council, especially ones that will improve our local services.

New artists feature in Arts Council’s annual exhibition The work of a number of new artists featured at the Cobar Arts Council annual art exhibition and competition at the railway station over the weekend.

Among the new artists featuring their work for the first time in Cobar was high school art teacher, David Pickard.

David entered a number of his works into the exhibition, three of which were imposing portraits (standing 1.2m high) along with some items made using wood burning and pyrography techniques.

Three of his works took out prizes in the Portrait Painting section including 1st and 2nd place and a Highly Commended award.

In addition to another high commendation in the Senior Open Art Form Any Medium section, David won two of the major prizes, the Thellie Wade Perpetual Award for Best Painting and he shared the Joan Singleton Overall Award with Daphne Jermyn.

Daphne’s entries won a 1st place and Highly Commended awards in the Senior Open Handicraft section with Sandy Baker collecting 2nd place in this section.

Liz Whiteman collected 1st place in both the Senior Photography and Portrait Photography sections while Cora McKervey was the most successful in the Junior Photography section.

In the drawing class, Edgar Palma earned 1st and 2nd places with Susanah Wells and Dora Difilippo’s works being Highly Commended.

Dora won the Painting section with Thellie Wade the runner-up and Daphne Jermyn and Alice Potter’s entries in this class earned high commendations from the judges.

In the junior Drawing class, Pearl Blackburn finished as the winner with Edwin Palma the runner-up.

The Junior Painting section winner was Jake McKervey with Isla McKervey 2nd and Sam McKervey earned the Highly Commended award in this class.

First and 2nd places in the Junior Watercolour section went to Joanna McClure while the Highly Commended award went to Leah McClure.

This year’s People’s Choice Award was won by a junior artist, Montana Grentell.

Cobar Arts Council president Lillian Simpson said this year’s event was “small but successful”.

Lillian said they appreciated the support of Peak Gold Mines as the event sponsor.

She said the official opening on Friday night was well attended and guests enjoyed the entertainment provided by the McClure and Theakston families, and also the refreshments and nibbles served on the Cobar Railway Station platform.

Lillian praised the small band of Cobar Arts Council helpers who had worked hard all weekend and in the lead up to the event and all of the local artists who contributed works this year.

She said the committee hopes to further extend the annual exhibition and competition next year to include a section for novice artists in the hope this will encourage them to further pursue their interest in art.

Widest copper intercept to date

Noona’s new weapon

Peel Mining’s drilling program at their Wirlong copper deposit 100km south of Cobar has yielded the company’s widest copper intercept to date.

The company announced last week that the latest assay results have returned high-grade copper intervals including 205m at 1.4 per cent copper and three grams per tonne silver from 434m.

Peel Mining’s managing director Rob Tyson said the latest assays from the Wirlong and nearby Malle Bull targets continue to define a growing copper system where the mineralization remains open in most directions.

Mr Tyson said processing and assaying will continue with further results expected in the coming weeks.

Books donated to Barwon schools

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler will again be donating books to schools across his electorate this year for school presentation nights.

It’s been his tradition since his election to office in March 2019.

“This year I asked my Facebook community what books they recommend I purchase – my team and I were blown away with the suggestions,” Mr Butler said.

From those recommendations, Mr Butler said this year high schools will be receiving copies of The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku and primary schools will be gifted The 13-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton.

Central schools will be receiving a copy of both.

“I was delighted to be able to make some book drop offs last week and will make some more this week on my travels,” Mr Butler said.

Cobar Shire Councillors voted last week to increase the Lilliane Brady Village’s room prices by 25 per cent however the decision was only made after an assurance that the price hike would not adversely affect any existing residents.

Discussions on the matter were held at last Thursday’s Ordinary Council Meeting following a report presented to council by their director of finance and community services Kym Miller who made the increase recommendation.

Cr Peter Yench raised the question about what happens to people who cannot afford the increase.

Mr Miller advised councillors the price increase would not affect the existing residents, only new entrants to the village.

He explained that new applications for the village were means tested.

“They are entitled to keep 55 per cent worth of assets and, also cascaded into the act, is hardship provisions so there is a whole bunch of options.

“If you can afford it, you pay it, and if not there are other options,” Mr Miller said.

Cr Peter Maxwell said he was unaware how exactly costs associated with nursing homes were determined and was keen to find out more.

Cr Maxwell said he (and no doubt some of his fellow councillors and incoming new councillors) would benefit from a workshop on how the costs and charges are determined for the Lilliane Brady Village.

Mr Miller said they will be doing a rates familiarization workshop with the new councillors and would be happy to provide this information to councillors also.

The Australian Government subsidises aged care homes across Australia to provide affordable, accessible care.

It sets a maximum amount for daily fees and accommodation costs.

The subsidies and supplements are paid directly to each aged care home.

If a resident can afford to, they are expected to help with the cost of governmentfunded age care.

How much each resident pays depends on things like their finances, the services they receive and the care provider’s fees.

There are limits and caps for some of these fees.

Providers must get approval to change fees for some of their services.

“By coming to the table on this plan, the Nationals have made sure that those we represent are now in a stronger position – that farmers, miners and regional towns are in a stronger position than they otherwise would be had the Nationals not gone in to negotiate on their behalf.

“We’re ensuring the Coalition’s plan to achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 will create jobs, deliver better access to health services; reduce cost of living pressures; provide better infrastructure and roads; and protect our lifestyle.

“Regional Australia is central to our plan.

“It will not shut down coal or gas production or require displacement of productive agricultural land,” Mr Coulton said.

“Our technology-driven plan sets out a credible pathway to net zero by 2050, while preserving our existing industries, establishing Australia as a leader in emerging low emissions technologies and positioning our regions to prosper.”

Celebrating a 40 year milestone

A number of local events that had to be cancelled or postponed by the COVID pandemic are now starting to take place, including the St Lawrence O‘Toole’s Catholic community’s celebrations to mark their parish priest’s 40th anniversary as a priest. The church’s previous plans to celebrate Fr Paul Finucane’s milestone were put on hold in August as public health orders restricted public gatherings. Trek raises $1.5M

More than $1.5 million has been raised for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) through the success of the 2021 Outback Car Trek.

The Trek passed through Cobar in June with a total of 203 people in 87 vehicles taking part in the annual fundraiser.

While the 2020 Trek had to be cancelled due to restrictions and lockdowns, the 2021 event was able to go ahead despite the ongoing pandemic.

The car rally raises vital funds for the RFDS to provide primary healthcare and 24-hour emergency cover to 90 per cent of Australia.

Probus club has recommenced their activities Numbers were low at Cobar Probus Club’s recent October meeting which may have been due to some members not realising the club had recommenced their activities.

The club’s September meeting had to be cancelled due to the ‘dreaded virus’ however COVID-safe meetings have now recommenced in line with social distancing regulations.

The executive is hoping they will have a great roll up for next week’s November meeting with a number of matters to be discussed, one of which is their Christmas party.

Some preparations have already commenced, including booking entertainment (in the form of John Peebles) and the group’s favourite venue (the Empire Hotel) where members are always well looked after.

The club would appreciate names for the Christmas lunch and pre-payment to be made at next week’s meeting.

Chance of rain

The outlook for the week ahead is expected to be mostly cloudy with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting possible showers and thunderstorms.

The expected top temperature for today is 29 with a 70 percent chance of rain this afternoon.

Tomorrow should be 27 degrees with a 90 percent chance of up to 15mm of rain and thunderstorms, possibly severe.

Friday is predicted to reach a maximum of 27 with a good chance of showers.

The weekend should be mostly sunny with the mercury forecast to reach 32 on Saturday and 31 degrees on Sunday.

Cobar recorded a very warm 34.2 degrees last Wednesday, a top of 31 on Thursday and 29.2 was the maximum on Friday.

The mercury took a bit of a dive on Saturday with the daytime temperature only reaching 23.5 degrees.

Sunday was mild, with 26 degrees the maximum daytime temperature.

• We hear a couple of local residents down near Nymagee decided to drive to Cobar on Sunday after hearing an interview on ABC Radio’s Macca All Over program earlier that morning with Cobar Arts Council president Lillian Simpson speaking about their art exhibition. They said the exhibition and lunch was worth the 100-odd km drive.

• The front entrance to the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool was given a bit of a spruce up last week with Council’s Parks & Gardens staff planting out the front garden beds.

Daniel’. Named in honour of Daniel Morecombe, Day for Daniel is Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness day. CPS students participated in age-appropriate lessons around keeping themselves safe and learning who ‘safe people’ are, which the school believes is an important lesson for young people.

• There were lots of families out trick or treating for Halloween on Sunday night and they praised the efforts of a number of locals who went all out with their decorations, special effects, tricks and handed out lots of treats. We hear there were almost traffic jams in Wittagoona Street, Blakey Street, Leah Street and Duffy Drive late on Sunday afternoon. Well done to all those who hosted the trick-or-treaters; they definitely appreciated it!

• The Cobar Miners Memorial and its architect, Stephen Pearse, have made the shortlist for a Sustainability Award. What a great recognition for a fantastic project that honours all our miners who have lost their lives.

The Cobar Local Aboriginal Land Council is seeking suitable applicants for the above position. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will be responsible to the Members and will report to the Chairperson and Board of Directors.

Manuka Resources owns and operates the Mt Boppy Gold Mine and the Wonawinta Project located in the Cobar region of central NSW. The operation is currently processing gold ore from the Mt Boppy open cut mine and will transition to processing silver ore from the Manuka leases in late 2021. The Process Plant utilises conventional crushing, grinding and elution technology to produce gold and silver doré.

The Company is seeking to employ a Process Plant Operator. The position available would suit an individual with or without previous experience in mineral processing, so long as the person is keen to be trained and developed as a Process Operator. The position requires an energetic, practical and hands-on individual who is happy to work on a continuous shift roster covering both dayshifts and nightshifts.

Candidates must hold a current driver’s licence and be able to pass a Criminal History Check.

Wilcannia is small community on the banks of the Darling River in far west NSW with a mix of indigenous, non-indigenous, permanent and transient residents. We are 970km from Sydney, 720km from Adelaide and 815km from Melbourne. The new eco-friendly yabby nets are widely available in tackle stores and other fishing retail outlets across NSW. Mr Harnwell has urged all recreational fishers to ensure they use the right equipment and familiarise themselves with the new rules which are now in place across NSW. Free hospitality training in gap year Whether it’s a first job or a career change, the NSW Government is out to attract job seekers with free training opportunities designed to help fill skill shortages in the hospitality sector.

The NSW Government is offering around 3,000 free training places across 29 different courses at TAFE NSW and other registered training providers, including barista training, safe food handling, responsible service of alcohol (RSA) and introduction to cooking courses.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the free training would help attract more workers to hospitality venues, at a critical time in the sector’s recovery from the pandemic.

“People from all over the state are lining up to get into pubs and clubs and we want to sup-

port those businesses with enthusiastic and skilled staff,” Mr Perrottet said.

“We know businesses are struggling without the international workforce they depended on pre-lockdown.

“That’s why opportunities like this are so valuable, filling labour gaps and giving jobseekers the opportunity of a bright future in hospitality.”

There was a big turn out of junior swimmers who were able to compete in 200m, 50m, 33m and 17m Freestyle events and also 100m, 50m, 33m and 17m Butterfly events. Golf Club finish as convincing winners in opening round Golf Club, featuring some new players in their line-up this season, defeated Empire by 66 runs in the opening round of the Cobar & District Senior Cricket competition 40 Overs competition on Saturday.

Golf Club won the toss and elected to bat first in the match played on the turf wicket at Ward Oval.

There have been some high-profile player movements during the off-season, and none bigger than ex-Empire captain Jake Harbison joining Golf Club for the 2021/2022 season.

However, it was Golf Club’s current captain, Alec Fraser, that led the way with the bat, top-scoring with 39 runs in Saturday’s season opener.

Jason Hampel (34 not out), who also deflected with Harbison from Empire to Golf Club and ring-in, Ben Griffiths (16 not out) ensured Golf Club batted out their 40 overs and scored a competitive total of 8/146.

Nicola Harbison (2/5) and Jed Noonan (2/15) returned the best bowling figures for Empire.

In reply, a four-wicket haul from Craig Youd left Empire in tatters.

Tim Hillam (27) and Ryan Urquhart (10) were their only batters to make double figures.

Youd finished the match with 4/12 and Josh Brown recorded 3/21.

Empire was bowled out during the 27th over for 80 runs, well short of the target.

Jason Toomey times it right twice It’s all about Skeet A big field of 14 swimmers turned out for the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club’s competition swim last Tuesday with Jason Toomey collecting two Yabbies stubbie holders as first place prizes.

Toomey won the 50m freestyle handicapped swim with a time of 0.09 seconds off his nominated time.

Murray Harland came in second (0.28) and Scott Toomey was just behind in third spot with 0.32 seconds off his time.

Jason Toomey was once again out in front in the 100m event winning that with a very good time of 0.06 seconds off his nominated time.

In second place was little brother Scott Toomey on 0.69 and this season’s ‘Yabby to watch’ Lucas Hardy, was much further back in third place on 2.22.

While Jason Toomey may have finished the

night with two wins and the lion’s share of the competition’s points, the best time of the night was recorded by a former club champion, Matt Harland.

Harland won the 30m event after he finished spot-on his nominated time.

The rest of the field were not that far behind with Harland’s 0.00 result followed up by 0.03 seconds from David Mexted and John Carswell finished third by the narrowest of margins with 0.04 seconds off his nominated time.

In the Brace Relay novelty event Paul Swainston and Murray Harland teamed up to record the best time of 0.32 seconds off their nominated time.

Scott Toomey and Matt Harland finished second best with 0.53 and Hardy and Jason Toomey managed third place with a time of 1.55 seconds outside their nominated time.

Captain Sally Bannister’s team won the day with 270 stableford points over President Narelle Kriz’s team, with 260.

Doing her part for the team on the day, Kriz was the individual winner with 40 points.

Glenda Peebles and Geraldine Francisco were next best and both scored 37 points.

Another countback was needed for Brenda Fugar and Fay Hardwick (both finished with 36 points).

The Nearest the Pin (NTP) winners on the 3rd hole were Angela Fryer, Daphne Cross and Pat Polack.

Conditions must have been a bit tougher in Sunday’s Stableford as 35 points was the winning score, a total that didn’t get a look in the previous day.

Fay Hardwick was in top spot and also picked up the A Grade NTP prize on the 7th hole.

Angela Fryer placed second with 33 points while Glenda Peebles and Pat Polack both recorded 32 points.

Ann Dunn was the B Grade pin winner and Pat Polack was the best for C Grade.

A Par game will be held today and a Stableford is set down for Saturday.

Sunday’s variation Stableford will be played in a ‘draw for partner’ format.

A field of 12 bowlers presented on Sunday morning on the Golfie greens for social bowls with a breeze playing havoc during the early part of the game.

In game one, Jack Kershaw dusted off his bowls to team up with Barry Bargwanna to go down by seven shots against the team of Karen Daly and Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond in what was the closest game of the day.

On the rink next door Jim Goonrey and Daniel Holt were level pegging with John Goonrey and John Daly until Goonrey/Holt pulled away and scored six shots on the 8th end.

After this they were never really bothered, running out winners by 10 shots.

All the main action however was on rink 6 where Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey was on fire!

Teaming up with Shane Carter, they took the lead over John Claus and Doug Hudson from the very start to eventually win by 25 shots.

The ‘George the Giraffe’ award was again hotly contested, but this time by only one bowler – John Claus.

It seems the big fella had a rough day at the office with some “different deliveries” but it was great to see him still smiling and having a great time. It’s a funny game, bowls – looks easy from the sideline!

This weekend the club will be holding their annual triples tournament. Bowlers must be double vaccinated to participate. There are still some spots available so please nominate at the club if interested.—Some bias

Only small fields for men’s golf competitions

With a large contingent of Cobar players in Port Macquarie representing our town in the highly prestigious ‘Gutfill Cup’ for most of this week, there were only small fields for the local competitions on the weekend.

There were five players in the mid-week competition with the ‘Master Blaster’, Max Phillips winning with 37 points.

Peter ‘China’ Brien won three of the Nearest the Pin (NTP) prizes, on the 3rd, 8th and 15th holes, while Ray Yench picked up the 7th hole prize and the elusive 11th hole was not won.

Seven players contested an individual Stableford on Saturday with Ray Yench winning the day with 36 points.

The less said about the other scores, the better. (Michael Bannister only scored 27 points and the usually consistent Max Phillips only scored 31 points – a poor result for someone who plays eight days a week!)

Steve Manns came second with 33 points.

Phillips did however redeem himself by winning two of the NTP’s, the 7th and 15th and Scott Meadows won the 8th.

The 11th was not won again.

Sunday’s Stableford had a ‘veterans’ look about it and you wouldn’t like to have a guess at the average age of the participants, which would have to have been nudging 70!

As it turned out, Cobar Men’s Golf’s oldest member, Piers Brown, won the day with a score of good 38 points.

He beat Chris Powell on a count-back with V Megender on 35 points coming third.

NTP’s were won by Will Brown on the 3rd hole and Max Phillips on the 15th.

Brown’s NTP is reported to have been as close as you could get to a hole-in-one, without it going in!

This week’s golf starts today with the midweek competition and Saturday’s and Sunday’s games are both Stablefords.

Next Saturday is the Inter Mine Golf Challenge, a three-person Ambrose.

The Western Districts Championships and Pennants will be held in Gilgandra on Sunday and the Club is hoping to send two teams of six players as representatives of Cobar.—Out of Bounds

Plenty of action for Touch double header There was plenty of action in the new Junior Touch Football competition which kicked off on Thursday afternoon at Ward Oval.

A total of total of 63 tries were scored in the double header opening round with 42 of those scored by the Juniors.

Of the four Juniors games contested, the

closest match of the night resulted in a narrow 6-5 win by Red over Orange.

While the Orange side actually ran in five tries to Red’s four, two of Red’s tries were recorded by Piper Allen and, with female tries worth double points, that helped the Red team to the win.

Rowdy Barton recorded Red’s other two

tries to help seal their win.

Orange’s try scorers were Talas Burke, Tommy George (2) and Cohan Nicholson (2).

The Red team was also involved in another close match in their other double header game up against Blue.

This time however they were narrowly beaten with Blue finishing as 9-7 winners.

Billy George led the try scoring for Blue with four tries, Ella Oborn added four points with her two tries and Aiden Hyland also touched down for a try for Blue.

Rowdy Barton (5) and Piper Allen (one try worth two points) once again accounted for all of Red’s points.

Blue finished the night with two wins after they also beat Yellow 4-1.

George McDonald ran in all four of Blue’s tries with Jaxon Waugh touching down for Yellow’s only try.

Yellow finished out in front of their game with Orange winning 7-3.

Lila Armstrong contributed four points to Yellow’s tally with her two tries, Eli Martin also crossed twice and Jaxon Waugh contributed a point to their winning tally.

In response, Tommy George and Lacey Watt crossed for consolation tries for Orange.

In the Seniors games, the Blue team dominated with two big wins, 6-2 over Green and 4-1 over Red. The Senior Yellow team also had two out of two wins for the night.

Both matches were close with Yellow taking their game with Red 3-1 and 3-1 was also the margin in their victory over Green.

Try scorers for the night were: Blue—Sosie Barton, Jaxon Burke (2), Zaiden Saunders (2), Ryan Urquhart (2) and Oisin McMullen (2); Lamond, Kai Taylor (3) and Jaxon Burke was a standout for his Blue team up against Green scoring two tries in their Yellow—Jay Elleise Woodbridge; Green—Damon Bruce, 6-2 win in the seniors grade of Junior Touch Football competition on Thursday night at Kai McCosker and Ethan McLeod; and Red— Ward Oval.
