Lotto division one prize goes to a local Cobar’s mystery TattsLotto division one winner has been found but it’s taken a while for Carl Young to let that all sink in.

The local farmer had gone about his week as usual, without realising he had a division one winning Saturday Lotto ticket stuffed in his wallet.

After reading our front page report last week that someone in Cobar had won, Carl decided he should check his ticket however he didn’t hold out much hope that his entry was the winner.

Carl rang his daughter in Sydney and asked her to check his numbers online. (They were the same ones he’s played for years.)

When she told him, “Dad I think you’ve won $800,000,” Carl replied, “Bullsh#t you must have pressed the wrong button”.

“Anyway I decided to go into town and it got sorted out in there with Anni,” Carl said.

The Cobar Newsagency confirmed Carl was the mystery winner who will share the division one prize from last Saturday’s Lotto draw 4175 with six others across Australia.

Each entry will receive $834,643.56.

When asked by The Cobar Weekly what he planned to do with the money, Carl said he’d received a fair bit of advice from his family.

“Some of them said to get a financial consultant.

“I’ve had advice from bank managers, solicitors and all them blokes over the years and it all seems to go wrong, so I guess I’ll have to make my own plan.

“I am pleased to win it, no doubt about that, I’ve been buying tickets for years.”

When we asked Carl if he might buy a new car, he said “Oh no, I just brough a secondhand one for $3,000, and there’s nothing

wrong with it, so I don’t want another one!”

Apart from celebrating with a few beers at the Great Western after he found out the news of his win last week, Carl said he plans to share his new wealth with the newsagency, the supermarket, with BRilliams, KML and the other

local businesses where he usually frequents.

Carl said he hopes the win will help to keep a few locals in jobs. He also hopes his win will encourage others to take a chance like he did.

“I’ve got a ticket in next week’s draw,” he cheekily said.

Two local groups share $4,500 boost New artwork has Two local groups will get a cash boost from Essential Energy’s 2021 Community Choices Program.

Cobar’s Rural Outback Animal Rescue (ROAR) volunteers will receive $3,000 from the program while St John’s School P&F Association are to get a $1,500 grant.

According to the Essential Energy Community Choices website, they believe even the biggest hearts need a little boost and that’s why they are proud their program is able to help groups and grassroots organisations they call the “real local heroes”.

This year Essential Energy will be handing out a total of $175,000 in grants across 20 zones in their network area. The value of each grant is determined by the number of community votes a nominated group receives.

As per the program criteria, successful groups could earn up to $2,500.

ROAR finished with the most votes in our area, Zone 1. That ensured they would collect the top grant amount of $2,500 but they will also pick up an additional $500 from a new category this year which is designed to help groups located in small communities with populations less than 20,000.

ROAR collected one of the 10 prizes of $500 from the all of the groups who receive the highest votes in this category.

ROAR volunteer Sharon Snelson said their $3,000 donation will be a great help and will go towards the upkeep costs for the dogs and cats they have in their care. She said it will be spent on food, flea and worm treatments and any vet care that is needed.

St John’s School P&F Association was thrilled to be among the winners and has plans to use their $1,500 donation towards new turf for the second level and to construct a weatherproof structure at the drive thru/pick up area.

Break and enter

Cobar Police are investigating a break and enter incident that occurred at a local business last week.

Sergeant Chris Power said an unknown person or persons smashed a window and gained access to a business located in Linsley Street between the hours of 8.30pm on Thursday and 6am on Friday.

A large quantity of cigarettes was stolen from the premises.

Sergeant Power said police have secured CCTV footage from the business and taken several items for further forensic examination.

Anyone with any information about this theft is urged to contact Cobar Police Station or Crime Stoppers.

New artwork that was meant to brighten up the main street was graffitied over the weekend.

One of local artist, Seigrid Peters’ “typically Cobar rural scenes” that was painted on to an electrical distribution board in front the Library in the main street, was graffitied sometime over the weekend.

The attack was first reported on social media on Monday morning and has now been reported to Police who will be able to use CCTV footage from the area to assist them to identify the perpetrators.

Cobar residents on social media condemned the attack calling it “disgusting”, “awful” and “sad” as Seigrid had put so much hard work the murals.

Seigrid told The Cobar Weekly hearing the news of the damage was “very disappointing”.

She said it however is only a “small speed bump in making our town a beautiful place to live in”.

Seigrid said she was staying positive and once it’s fixed, she’s hoping it won’t happen again. “I will have to repaint the damage,” she said.

“They have been sealed but Council and I are looking at purchasing a different type of graffiti sealant so that if it happens again we can just clean it off,” Seigrid said.

Mixed reactions to decision to divert Pfizer vaccinations NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s announcement that Pfizer vaccines would be redirected from rural areas to the city has been met with a mixed reaction locally.

The Premier announced last week that Pfizer vaccines would be redirected from the allocations to rural areas to support Year 12 students in the Greater Sydney area returning to face-toface learning for their HSC. A number of locals who object to the decision have signed an ePetition organised by State Member for Barwon, Roy Butler.

Mr Butler’s petition to the NSW Government calls for equitable distribution of and access to COVID-19 vaccines for the communities of regional NSW. Other locals have said with the risk of contracting COVID-19 in Cobar considerably lower than our city counterparts, they would be willing to forgo their dose and instead let it go to where it’s needed the most.

A NSW Health spokesperson said as part of its pandemic response, NSW Health is taking the important temporary measure to give them the best chance of containing the current outbreak in Greater Sydney as quickly as possible.

“As a result, people in other regions could receive a notice advising their first dose of Pfizer will be rescheduled” the spokesperson said.

“Anyone who has had their first dose already or those in priority groups 1a or 1b will not have their bookings rescheduled.

“GPs continue to supply Pfizer vaccinations in regional NSW, and their supplies from the Federal Government are unaffected by this reallocation” .

“AstraZeneca also remains available from

GPs, NSW Health clinics and a growing number of pharmacies,” the spokesperson said.

Mr Butler’s online petition is gaining considerable support.

“Let’s all send our message that it’s not ok for them [the NSW Government] to take from our limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine to

go to the city, while so many of our frontline health and emergency service workers, and aged, frail, infirm and others here in the bush are still waiting months to get their first dose,” Mr Butler urged.

“Let’s send them a message that all of NSW deserves to be treated equitably.”

The Cobar Respiratory Clinic is continuing to roll out their COVID-19 vaccination program in Cobar with Phillip Harley getting a jab yesterday from Dr Kula Baravilala.

CPS’s Dreaming Day celebrated country and culture Cobar Public School celebrated their annual Dreaming Day at the school last week and, while COVID restrictions meant that some of the activities ran a little bit differently this year, it certainly didn’t dampen the excitement the school community has for country and culture.

Dreaming or Dreamtime represents the time when Aboriginal Ancestral Spirits progressed over the land and created life and important physical geographic formations and sites.

Dreaming is based on the inter-relation of all people and all things and is handed down through stories, art, ceremonies and songs.

Cobar Public students participated in a range of activities that helped them to learn about Aboriginal people and their culture including: building gunyahs out of bush brush, emu craft, dot painting, Indigenous themed sport, basket weaving, beading and grinding rocks to make ochre.

Cobar High School’s Aboriginal Education Officer, Colby Lawrence, whose role is to assist teachers to develop culturally appropriate resources and programs, was a special guest to give an “age appropriate” Acknowledgement of Country address.

His address highlighted the connection Aboriginal people have to land and the importance Cobar Public School students Lara Stephens, Elli Fuller, Kaelyn Vaka and Willow of looking after it.

Unseasonal warm day breaks record Swimming pool contract extended

Cobar recorded its highest July temperature in 43 years on Saturday with the mercury hitting a top of 26.3 degrees.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Cobar’s previous record high for July was 25.7 degrees recorded in 1978.

It wasn’t just Cobar that had above average temperatures with the Bureau reporting July 31, 2021 was the fourth warmest July day on record.

Above average temperatures were experienced in all states after a mass of warm air moved over the north-west on Saturday.

This heat culminated in record-breaking weather for the final day of the month.

Bourke Airport recorded 31.8 degrees which is a July record for the state, exceeding Tibooburra’s previous high temperature of 31.7 degrees on July 28, 1958.

Prior to Saturday the days had been colder with last Wednesday’s top only reaching 15.1 degrees, Thursday’s maximum was 14.7 and the top on Friday was 17.6.

After Saturday’s record-breaker, the mercury dropped back on Sunday to 19.8 degrees and 20 degrees was recorded on Monday.

Thunderstorms, as well as a brilliant light show on Monday night resulted in 4.2mm of rain in the Bureau’s gauge at the Cobar Airport up until 9am Tuesday morning.

Taking Cobar’s total rainfall for July to 33.2mm, which is above the average of 21.5mm for this time of year.

After the rain, the mercury took a dive with the Bureau recording a cool 3.4 degrees overnight on Monday.

The outlook for the week ahead is expected to be partly cloudy and there will be a return to colder days with 14 degrees the forecast for today, while tomorrow should reach a top of 15 degrees.

There’s a slight chance of showers and a top of 17 degrees forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Monday should reach a top of 18 degrees and again there’s a chance of a shower.

Cobar Shire Councillors voted at the July Ordinary Council Meeting to extend the existing management contract of Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

In his report to the meeting, Council’s director of finance and community services, Kym Miller, recommended that Council exercise its two-year extension option within the existing management contract for the pool.

Mr Miller said over the 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 seasons, the L&R Group had successfully managed the pool facility and had seen a growth in users.

“The contractor has expressed enthusiasm for Council to extend the contract,” Mr Miller told Councillors.

Councillors voted to extend the agreement with L&R Group for a further two seasons in accordance with the contract currently in place.

Farmers urged to apply for mouse bait rebates

The NSW Farmers group is encouraging farmers to apply now for mouse bait rebates of up to $10,000 per farm business through the Rural Assistance Authority website.

Applications for the rebate opened on Monday with a total of $95 million available to assist farmers with the costs of Zinc Phosphide baiting programs.

NSW Farmers vice president and Liverpool Plains farmer Xavier Martin said claims can be made retrospectively for bait costs incurred back to the beginning of February this year.

“Like many farmers across the state, our family has spent a small fortune on zinc phosphide baits to combat the mouse plague,” Mr Martin said.

“The good news is that applications are now finally open for the State Government’s Zinc Phosphide baiting program and I would encourage farmers to get in early to secure the rebate.

“This is an opportunity to prepare for spring when mice populations are predicted to swell.”

Mr Martin said NSW Farmers has advocated tirelessly for this financial support over many months, which has now resulted in practical support in the form of $150 million worth of mouse plague support packages.

“This support recognises the immense impact this plague has had on so many farm businesses already.

“I have heard some really horrendous stories about the impact of this mouse plague and the costs involved in trying to save crops and fodder has been significant.”

Mr Martin said the situation is ongoing and will require constant monitoring and flexibility in support measures for what could become the worst mouse plague NSW has seen.

“We look forward to working with government on behalf of our members and regional communities to hopefully ensure this plague is well under control before spring.”

The NSW Rural Assistance Authority will administer the rebate program.

Girl Guides head outdoors

No need to suffer with Shingles Cobar’s senior residents are warned to arm themselves against Shingles, a viral infection that causes a painful, blistering rash and can lead to serious long-term health complications.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox.

A shingles rash develops into painful blisters that may also be itchy, usually on one side of the body, either on the face, chest, back, abdomen or pelvis.

Sometimes pain in the affected region can be severe and prolonged.

This is called post-herpetic neuralgia.

Other complications may include scarring, skin infections, loss of vision and hearing, pneumonia and/or neurological complications.

The virus can be spread by direct contact with the skin rash of infected people.

This causes chickenpox in people who are not immune.

Shingles develops more commonly in people who are immunosuppressed.

The Australian Government’s Department of Health recommends a single dose of shingles vaccine for adults at 70 years of age.

The vaccine is currently free for people aged 70 years and it’s also free for those aged 71-79 years of age who are eligible under a five-year catch up program, however this is only until the end of October.

At the commencement of the Government’s vaccination program, the interest in the vaccine was unprecedented.

Early shortages have been addressed and there is now ample stock available to meet ongoing demand under the program.

Cobar residents aged 70 to 79 are encouraged to speak to their doctor about getting vaccinated against shingles.

Grants to support rural communities Applications are now open for the Nutrien Ag Solutions Community Grants Program, with grants of up to $5,000 now available.

The grants are available for not-for-profit organisations in remote, rural and regional Australia and aim to help deliver projects that contribute to the success and wellbeing of their communities.

Run in partnership with the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), Nutrien Ag Solutions will donate $250,000 annually to support community projects that can have a positive and potentially long-term effect on the wider community.

The criteria for the grants is that the funding will help meet a need or realise an opportunity, and also contribute to the success, vibrancy, and wellbeing of the community.

Nutrien Ag Solutions Director of Government and Industry Affairs, Carissa Buckland, said the success of agriculture and the wellbeing of regional Australia are inextricably linked.

Ms Buckland said Nutrien Ag Solutions’ support for country Australia extends beyond the farm to the communities that support agriculture.

“Like many in these communities, our team wear many hats – our agronomists are also rugby coaches, volunteer firefighters, on the barbecue at the school fundraiser or coordinating competitions at the local show.

“We want to build upon that existing connection in this program,” she said.

FRRR CEO Natalie Egleton said the new partnership and grant program will help to ensure there is funding for grassroots solutions to local issues.

“We’ve worked closely with the Nutrien team to design this program so that the needs of the community are front and centre.

“Because every community is different, the program can fund a wide range of initiatives that strengthen and support the community,” Ms Egleton said.

“This could be anything from improving access to the local community hall by adding a ramp, creating a community garden to encourage people to engage and connect, or drive local tourism by hosting a local arts festival or delivering a community-based street art beautification project – whatever the local priorities are.”

MLA’s Market Information Manager, SteIt’s on this Thursday phen Bignell, said the outlook was encouraging with a positive spring expected for many eastern states’ producers.

“With a favourable three-month weather outlook signalling a strong spring, average adult carcase weights are set to rise signifiDrawn 7pm-9pm cantly leading to higher weight gain,” Mr Bignell said.

Mr Bignell said the national herd is estimated to reach 26 million head this year, which is five per cent above 2020 levels.

which is encouraging stock retention.

“This tight supply is being reflected in lower saleyard throughput, reinforcing that the national herd rebuild is well underway,” Mr Bignell said.

“Slaughter is forecast to drop this year on the back of the national herd rebuild as producers retain more stock however it is expected to pick up slightly toward the end of the year as more cattle come off feed.”

In relation to prices, rain events remain the key indicator of market performance.

“The industry EYCI price predictor has the EYCI sitting at 874c/kg at the end of 2021,” Mr Bignell said.

“In line with the astronomical lift in young cattle prices seen last week, the National Medium Cow Indicator has risen 40c year-onyear, or 13 per cent, to sit at 308c, with the National Heavy Steer Indicator up 100c, or 16 per cent, to sit at 412c/kg lwt.”

Mr Bignell said globally, as economies continue to recover from COVID-19, demand for Australian beef should also improve.

“COVID-19 continues to disrupt beef trade and sales in many Asia-Pacific nations, however economic growth rates are forecast to gradually lift, maintained by improved vaccination rates in developed markets and improved consumer sentiment supporting beef consumption and import demand,” Mr Bignell said.

More toilets for Drummond Park Additional hangars at the airport Cr Janine Lea-Barrett has called for Council to consider installing more toilet facilities in Drummond Park.

Cr Lea-Barrett raised the matter at the July Ordinary Meeting of Council on July 22.

She said a second set of toilets was needed in the park as just two toilets is not enough especially when bus loads of visitors pull up to use the facilities at the park.

A number of young families have also commented that just two toilets is inadequate when there’s a birthday party or playgroup event happening.

Cr Lea-Barrett asked if there were any further grant opportunities or existing grant funding that could be re-allocated to construct a second set of toilets.

Council’s director of finance and community services Kym Miller advised the meeting that all of the $7.7 million Resources for Regions funding had been allocated.

He said he expected any allocation of additional funding towards new toilet facilities would be a decision that would be made by the new council.

Councillors gave the go ahead to construct two new hangars at the Cobar Airport at their recent July Ordinary Council Meeting.

Council’s director of finance and community services Kym Miller reported to the meeting that Council had approved the creation of two additional hangar developments at the aerodrome to be constructed on the town side of the existing hangar buildings in March this year.

Mr Miller said interest has been expressed by two parties in leasing the 25 metre x 20 metre blocks to construct 15mx20m hangars.

“Construction cost and fees are to be paid for by the tenant,” Mr Miller said.

“Council already has in place an occupancy agreement and fee ($900 per annum).”

• Woah it was another big weekend for sports both

fans in Cobar last weekend and you could take your pick of which sport you wanted to watch (or participate in). It all kicked off with junior netball finals and presentations on Friday afternoon followed by a round of soccer, two games each of rugby league and rugby union (men’s and ladies’) and two thrilling senior netball games—all on Saturday. Then on Sunday you had the choice of watching mini league, a ladies golf major trophy event or some thrilling championship bowls matches.

• The junior netball presentations were held on Friday afternoon at the Ward Oval netball courts. We hear Colby got down on his knees to ensure he was at eye level when addressing the kids, which was a remarkable achievement given Colby would likely be carrying a few old sporting injuries from his Squalleyball glory days!

• This week is National Stroke Week, a week to celebrate our frontline health workers and everyday people who act F.A.S.T. when stroke strikes. When these two groups of people work together, lives can be saved and disability from stroke can be reduced. • The Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) reports abuse towards medical staff and GPs unable to provide COVID vaccines due to short supply are on the rise. RDAA is calling on people to be patient, with vaccines being rolled out as quickly as they come into stock. • Another one bites the dust! The Cobar Clay Target Club is another local sporting group that has been forced to cancel a major event due to COVID restrictions. This year’s Golden Clay Target shoot, which attracts competitors from all around Australia, was to have been held later this month, and has now been cancelled.

Camels host Walgett for their last game of the season The Cobar Camels played their final game of the 2021 Western Plains Rugby Union season on Saturday when they hosted Walgett for the last game of the regular competition.

After what’s been a fairly dismal season for the Camels who haven’t recorded any wins in the competition, the Cobar team however didn’t go out with a whimper, and instead played one of their best games of the season up against a top of the table side.

Camels co-coach Tony Jacklin praised the side’s performance.

“It was hard hitting and fast paced but the boys never gave up,” Jacklin said.

A few mistakes and some early penalties hurt the Camels to keep them down in their own half early in the match.

Jacklin said the Camels did manage to recover somewhat and then concentrated on taking the ball up to the visitors in the centre field which allowed them room on the wing to eventually score.

He said the game however got away from the Cobar side in the second half.

“Unfortunately fitness and mistakes got the better of the Camels with Walgett running away with the win late in the second half.

“It was a huge effort not only for the last game but for the whole season,” Jacklin said.

“It’s great to see such young blood within the team and we’re really looking forward to see what next season can bring.”

Cobar scored three tries in the match with Vinnie Taumalolo crossing for two and Kody Ford scoring the other.

Kody Martin converted two.

Walgett finished as 59-19 winners.

Taumalolo was named Players’ Players with Best & Fairest points going to Mitch Dunne (3), Tim Stever (2) and the rest of the team (1).

The semi finals of the competition commence this Saturday with Warren meeting the Brewarrina/Bourke Brumbies at Brewarrina.

The Cobar Bactrians women’s rugby team went down to Walgett 6-1 on Saturday in the Western Plains Rugby women’s competition game played at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval.

A winning double for junior Roosters Cobar’s Under 10s and Under 11s teams came home with wins on Saturday in Round 11 of the Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League competition.

The Cobar Under 10s finished as convincing 28-6 winners over their Warren opposition with Mason King, Jaxon Waugh and George McDonald (3) responsible for their tries.

Mason, Jaxon, George and Temi Adesina kicked their conversions and Jaxon shared the Coach’s Award with Clayton Edwards.

The Cobar Under 11s also had a 28-6 win over their Dubbo Macquarie opposition.

Rowdy Barton, Cohan Nicholson, Billy George (2) and Lachlan Brookman touched

down for tries with Rowdy, Cohan and Billy, along with Jaxon Waugh landing conversions.

The Coach’s Awards were earned by Skyla Fairfull and Nash Webster.

The Roosters Under 12s were narrowly beaten 16-6 by their South Dubbo opposition.

Eli Martin scored Cobar’s try with Rowdy Barton making the conversion.

Eli collected the Coach’s Award along with Jackson Muldoon.

In the Under 9s non-competitive game against South Dubbo, Cobar’s Clare Cousins and Lilly Fairfull collected Coach’s Awards.

Sunday social bowlers at the Golfie were treated to beautiful weather with three games of pairs and one match of triples being played.

On rink 10 John Daly and Jimmy Goonrey scored a one point win over Randall Hall and Glen “Kiwi” Ratcliffe despite Hall/Kiwi scoring five shots on the last end.

On rink 12 Doug Hudson and Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey where too strong for Barry Bargwanna and Karen Daly by a margin of +7.

In the triples match David Knight, Frank Singleton and John Goonrey (playing double lead) where well in control of their game against Dean ‘Bogga’ McLeod, David Thomas and John Goonrey to finish with a comfortable win of +10 and claim second prize.

In the final game Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Gary Loughran took on Daniel Holt and Shane Carter with the Duck and the Camel having no answer to Holt/Carter’s superior game going down by 21 shots.

A Singles Championship game was also played on Sunday morning between Kyle Roberts and Bian Smith and, what a battle it was!

Roberts looked set to win after he claimed four shots at the 30th end to lead 28-24.

However the ‘never say die’ attitude of Smith emerged and he clawed his way back to level at 30-all after 36 ends.

Both bowlers had their chance to take the game on the final end, Smith prevailed to finish as the victor in a truly great match.

The weather took a turn for the worse on Sunday afternoon as the wind rose, the temperature fell and some spots of rain were even added in for good measure.

This was the setting for the Singles game between Mike Sargent and David Schofield.

The scores where locked at 11-all after 14 ends before Sargent took the reigns and pulled away to lead by 13 shots.

Despite a spirited comeback by Schofield, it was Sargent’s day and he eventually ran away to finish with a 14 shot win.

Sargent now progresses to the final and will play the winner of the next match between Bian Smith and Craig Grimmond.

The Giraffe award this week was hotly contested with John Goonrey being crowned the winner.

Roosters win after game was called at halftime

Sports fans keen to see a big game of rugby league at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday afternoon would have been somewhat disappointed when the Cobar Roosters were declared the winners at halftime.

Disappointingly the Coonamble visitors forfeited their Christie & Hood Castlereagh Round 16 match to the Roosters at halftime with the score at 58-2.

After only travelling with 11 players, by a gentleman’s agreement, the match was called at halftime.

Daniel Dean ran in three of the Roosters’ 10 tries with Nathan McAndrew, Tim Hillam, Ben Griffiths, Tristan Everett, Thomas Plater, Jed Noonan and Zane Taylor also crossing for tries for Cobar.

Plater and Watson shared the goal kicking duties with Plater landing five conversions and Watson was responsible for four goals.

Best & Fairest points went to Plater (3), Dean (2) and Ash Davies (1) with Dean also picking up the most votes for the Roosters’ Players Player of the match.

The win gives Cobar an almost unassailable lead in the competition and they will further improve on their standings this week with points from a bye. (Cobar hosts Binnaway this week in Round 17 however Binnaway doesn’t have a First Grade side).

The decision of who will be the minor premiers will however all come down to next Saturday’s final round when the Roosters take on 3rd placed Gilgandra Panthers, who are always a hard team to beat at home.

The competition’s former frontrunners, Dunedoo, still has a chance to snatch the minor premiership title from under the Roosters as they have two easy games ahead of them when they play 6th placed Baradine this week and 7th placed Trangie next week.

The Roosters need to beat the Panthers next week to claim the 2021 minor premiership.

Kriz blitzes field of 17 to claim Marie McManus trophy The Ladies Golf annual Marie McManus Memorial Day was held on Sunday with 17 participants teeing off.

Narelle Kriz blitzed the rest of the field finishing with 42 stableford points, five points clear of nearest rival Barb Barklimore on 37.

Fay Hardwick, Sally Bannister and Tina Gordon all scored 36 points while Brenda Fugar had 32.

Kriz was the A Grade pin winner on the 7th hole and Gordon picked up B Grade’s prize.

No C Grade player stayed on the fairway to claim that division.

Saturday’s weather was picture perfect and attracted 14 starters who relished the springlike weather for their Par round.

Barb Barklimore had a wonderful day finishing with +3 for the win.

A countback then separated Daphne Cross and Susan Goonrey who each had +2.

Another countback was needed for 4th place with Angela Fryer getting the nod over Marlene Wynd when both ladies had +1.

Julie Livingston, Marlene Wynd and Daphne Cross all picked up Nearest the Pin wins on the

3rd hole in their respective grades.

The Stroke game last Wednesday had an additional two ‘girls’ among the field of 12, one of which was among the top place getters.

Fay Hardwick won the day with 76 net on a countback from Marlene Wynd who had the same score. Greg Clark placed third with 78 net and Ann Dunn had 82 net for 4th spot.

Unfortunately the other ‘girl’, Steve Manns couldn’t match it with the women!

Geraldine Francisco won the putting prize with 26 putts.

The game was played in horrid conditions with heavy showers throughout the day making it tough going on the greens with four players pulling out after nine holes, opting for the dryer surroundings of the clubhouse.

Today a Stableford game will be played.

Saturday is a two person Ambrose (select own partner) event and Sunday’s round will be a Stroke game.

Mark Martin and Marc Quinn finished as the winners with a very good score of 76 stableford points just in front of Steve Manns and Greg Clark on 75 stableford points.

Back in third place was the left hand combination of Peter ‘China’ Brien and Bill Fugar on a countback from Jarrod Marsden and Tony Polack.

Both teams finished on 70 stableford points.

Quinn was the winner of the individual competition with a fine score of 42 stableford points with second place taken out by Steve Manns on 38 stableford points.

Nearest to the Pin (NTP) prizes were won by Clive Jones on the 3rd hole, Corin AhSee (8th), Marsden (11th) and Brien on the 15th hole.

Jay Egan put in a solid performance with a par round to take out the event with 39 stableford points. He was closely followed by Geoff Dunne on 38 stableford points with his putting proving to be his downfall.

Geoff Rorke finished third with 37 stableford points on a countback from Stewart Fraser, also with 37 points.

Back in 5th place was Rob Cummins on 35.

NTP’s were won by Brien on the 3rd and 8th holes, Chris Powell on the 11th and Mark Fraser on the 15th hole.

The Narromine Vets Open will be played tomorrow. On Saturday and Sunday the Cobar Men’s Club Championships will be contested and played in conjunction with the BRilliams Copper City Classic. Players are welcome to play both days or either day.—Three Aces

Real Steel had an iron resolve to win this year’s title The B Grade netball grand final game on Saturday mirrored the A Grade match with Real Steel fighting back in the second half to claim their eventual 32-29 win over Golfie Mystics.

Real Steel posted the first two points in Saturday’s game before Mystics kicked into gear.

Mystics shooter, Peta Hill, brought them back into the game after she dropped in some long shots and strong defence from Mel Singh and Kelly Tomek helped give the Mystics a one point advantage at the first break.

Some positional changes for both teams didn’t have much effect on the score as Mystics

continued to hold a narrow ascendency and they had a two point edge at halftime, 11-9.

With both sides having plenty of subs, the line up for the third quarter for both sides had changed again, but Real Steel’s new combination proved to be working, Nicola Harbison went back in the shooting circle and was tenaciously chasing every ball that was in her reach and the tide started to turn.

Real Steel were in front by a goal when the two sides returned for the final quarter.

With Hill, and team mate Jasey Bruce, shooting well for Mystics and Harbison and Ally Fellows not missing many shooting opportuni-

ties at the other end of the court, it was left to the mid court players to determine how the game would eventually play out.

Real Steel still had an ace up their sleeve and they switched defender Gen Fellows to play Centre in the final quarter.

With the ball turned over multiple times, a number of which Gen Fellows (who was named Player of the Grand Final) was responsible for, this was where the game was eventually won.

With just minutes left to play, the sideline officials were preparing for the event of a draw, but Real Steel had an iron resolve to win and they held tight to eventually finish as 32-29 victors.

Divas take trophy

The winners of the B Grade senior netball grand final on Saturday, Real Steel, celebrated with champagne after their fightback win over Golfie Mystics. It was Real Steel third consecutive appearance in a B Grade grand final but only the first year they’ve come away with a win. And the win was a thriller with the match looking like it could have been a draw just minutes out from fulltime. Real Steel however powered on to eventually post a three point win, 32-29, over the Mystics.

JKM wasn’t however yet beaten and they came out fighting to immediately score three rapid goals to bring the margin back to just one point the difference.

Divas then had to start playing smarter (as their superior fitness factor was most definitely JKM’s biggest asset).

Divas brought a lot more lob passes into play which were near impossible to defend.

Urquhart continued to goal from all over the circle and she and Janette Bishop (3rd quarter, and then Travis, who went back to shoot in the final quarter) made the most of every shooting opportunity they were given.

Meanwhile at the other end of the court, Smith and Player of the Grand Final, Corinne McLeod, who seemed to find another gear in the final quarter, did everything they could to limit JKM’s shooting chances, which was a tough ask as Elleise Woodbridge, Carrol and Sally O’Brien were not missing many of their shots. Despite some sensational athleticism from the JKM side, in particular Neve Carter, who was hard to get the ball past in defence, Divas stubbornly held out to claim a 39-30 win.

Both A Grade captains, Summer Patterson (Divas) and Alex Brown (JKM) praised the efforts of the young JKM team members.

For a number of JKM players it was just their second year playing in the senior competition while for one, Molly Broughton, it was her first season coming up from juniors.

All of the players well and truly rose to the occasion which made for a brilliant game to watch.

their two previous seasons, Real Steel were finally able to eventually hoist the B Grade trophy high when they beat Golfie Mystics 32-29, in what was another close game.

As the 2021 A Grade minor premiers, Divas went into Saturday’s grand final as favourites but knew they would have a tough game up against the young guns, JKM, who have continued to improve at a rapid rate this season.

JKM started the match with great intensity which they continued throughout the first half.

They upset the Divas from the get go scoring the first two goals before the Divas recovered to bring the scores back to level.

There were some very good match-ups on the court and spectators witnessed a great contest in Divas’ shooting circle with their star shooter, Lauren Urquhart, up against JKM’s towering and agile defence, Hannah Carroll.

Urquhart is arguably one of the best shooters in the league while Carroll’s long reach and good vision ensured she gained lots of rebounds and intercepts throughout the match.

The JKM players intensely contested the ball at every opportunity all up and down the court as the two sides went goal for goal and the scores were locked at 7-all at the first break.

The battle for ascendency continued throughout the second quarter and, despite both sides making some minor positional changes at the break, including Carroll moving to shooter for JKM, the arm wrestle continued with former Blues defender, Demi Smith, given the task of containing Carroll.

At half time JKM had a one goal advantage, 18-17. That was when Divas veteran, Lisa Travis, decided it was time to come out of the shooting circle and into the Centre position where she could better control the flow of the game. The tactic had the desired effect.

The Divas, with their many years of playing experience on their side, systematically set about wearing down JKM’s attack and Divas were up four goals going into the final quarter.
