Little interest in Council plans Cobar Shire Council is hoping for a better turn-out of businesses and residents from the industrial area at a second community consultation session tonight. Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko was disappointed with the low attendance of just five members of the public for their Industrial Estate Roads and Stormwater Upgrade Project public session yesterday morning. “We want to work with the landholders and businesses on this project because at some time it is going to interfere with their business operation. “This is an important investment for Council and we hope businesses in the area will take an interest in this project,” he said. Mr Vlatko said Council wanted businesses and residents in the area to fully understand the scope of the upgrade work they are planning for the roads, kerb and guttering and stormwater management. Council is spending $5.4 million on the upgrade work which is being funded by grants with no ratepayer contribution required. Preliminary plans of the works were made available at yesterday’s consultation meeting. Council’s roads engineer Urmi Thakur led the information session with Council’s works manager Kane Kreeck also attending. They fielded a number of questions posed by the attendees including a contingency plan for future sewer work, upgrading the catchment area of ‘The Salty’ for stormwater runoff, driveway height specifications and provision of power. The second information session will be held tonight at 6pm at the Council Chambers.

By-election count continues

Counting continues this week to find a result in Cobar’s Local Government byelection. NSW Electoral Commission’s (NSWEC) returning officer Vanessa Reschke said they should have a pretty good idea by the end of the week which one of the two candidates will be elected to Cobar Shire Council. As of Monday afternoon close to 1,300 postal votes had been received, 387 people had voted via pre poll and 238 registered voters voted on Saturday in Cobar and Euabalong. “We will be advised by NSWEC head office when we can begin scrutiny on these Postal

Votes this week,” Mrs Reschke said. “This cannot occur until the authorised rolls used for elector mark offs have been returned to Sydney. [They were sent on Monday.] She said a check will be made to ensure the elector has not already voted anywhere else against the returned information from the rolls. “The number of enrolled electors is around 2,883 so we could expect quite a few more to be still coming via post.” According to the NSWEC website first preferences count tally updated on Monday, Michael Prince had received 71.12 per cent of votes and Jesse Cochrane Adolfson 26.11.
