Playing a role in this year’s ‘A Night to Remember Our Lost Miners’ event at the Miners Memorial Park on Friday night were musicians Laura Andrew and Cassandra Best, guest speakers Craig and Therese Stegman, Sam Whiteman, Kay Stingemore and Fr Paul Finucane, musician Shane Josephson, emcee Barry Knight and guest speaker Roger Jackson. As part of the commemoration service, the local mines rescue and emergency services staff formed a guard of honour, the bell was rung and the school choirs and Shane performed musical numbers. Golfie farewells two of its long serving staff members The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club put into use all three of its function rooms on Saturday night to host a community farewell for two of the club’s long-serving staff, Chris Brown and Sandra Russell.

The sibling sisters have worked a combined 75 years at the Golfie—Chris has served for 40 years and Sandra has clocked up 35.

Added with the service of a couple other family members, Chris said their family has dedicated a total of 115 years to the club.

Along with their family members, past and present staff members, board members and regular patrons, former club secretary/manager Neil Urquhart returned for the function and wished “his girls” all the best for their retirement.

Other speakers included current secretary/ manager Jason Howell, current club president Jim Goonrey and long-serving board member Bob Clark.

All spoke highly of the exemplary service of the pair and their “above and beyond” attitude to their administration roles in the club.

Bob also praised Chris’s many years of involvement with the Cobar Senior Rugby League Club.

Jim said there had been five secretary/ managers in his time as president and he praised Chris and Sandra for “filling in” and keeping the club running during each manager.

Both Chris and Sandra started out working behind the bar at the club before moving into Cobar Bowling & Golf’s past secretary/manager Neil Urquhart, long serving club board the office.

Council awards tenders to locals

Cobar Shire Council awarded two tenders at their October Ordinary Council meeting on Thursday, both going to local contractors.

Local Government Minister sends his condolences Tributes are coming in following the recent passing of former Cobar Mayor Peter Abbott.

The Minister for Local Government, Ron Hoenig was among those who were saddened to hear of Cr Abbott’s passing.

“I had the opportunity to meet with Peter earlier this year as host of the Western Division Councils conference and annual meeting,” Minister Hoenig said.

“Peter spoke passionately about water supply upgrades and how important water security is to furthering the prosperity of Cobar and surrounding communities.

“He was very focused on bringing all levels of government together with the community and industry so that the future wave of mining investment benefited Cobar and provided better opportunities for locals.

“Peter was dedicated to the Cobar community serving six terms as Deputy Mayor to New South Wales’s longest serving Mayor Lilliane Brady OAM before becoming Mayor after her passing in 2021.

“My thoughts are with Peter’s friends and family and the Cobar community.”

Tours talk of tragedy

Local Kay Stingemore (at right) conducted a guided cemetery tour on Saturday morning as part of this year’s Festival of the Miner’s Ghost program of events. Kay, and fellow Great Cobar Museum staff member, Sam Whiteman, relayed the stories of six men and women who were killed in the mines. They gave detailed accounts of their lives and their deaths. Many died quite young. All were tragically killed and some of them suffered horrific deaths. Kay and Sam also spoke about the family connections these people had to residents still living in Cobar (some of whom were on the tour).

As part of the tour, Kay placed an everlasting daisy on one of the lost miner’s graves to mark the anniversary of his death.

A first-hand look at farming and Landcare practices Year 6 students from Cobar Public School and St Johns School travelled to Nullagoola last week to take part in a range of activities that focused on learning about farming and Landcare practices.

The annual event is hosted by the Buckwaroon Landcare Group (BLG) which aims to give students a first hand insight into agriculture practices.

Students participated in six different activities included shearing, stock handling, understanding soil types, erosion control, map reading and invasive scrub control.

It was a wonderful day for the students to build friendships and learn valuable information about life on the land.

The initiative is supported by property owners, BLG members Dave and Rikki Allen, Peak Gold Mines and Green Collar.

Whacky weather It’s been a week of whacky weather with the mercury jumping all over the place as daytime temperatures ranged from 36.6 degrees down to 19.2.

Local’s photos will feature in Coulton’s calendar Local photographer Samantha Smith’s photos of the Cobar Sound Chapel and the sun setting over the Old Res were among a final batch of 14 photos shortlisted for Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton’s 2023 Christmas Card Photo Competition.

Sam had three photos in the running with a striking and iconic image taken near Lightning Ridge by Naomi Stone eventually being named the winner.

Mr Coulton said Ms Stone’s photograph titled ‘Sunrise at Kangaroo Hill’ had captured the intensity of the sunrises experienced in Outback New South Wales.

“Ms Stone’s photo includes such eyecatching colour that it immediately got my attention, and I think a sunrise is always a hopeful thing, which is a nice message as well,” Mr Coulton said.

“The rocky soil and old structures featured in this photo are an iconic reminder of the industry out at Lightning Ridge, which is opal country; this is a nod to both the history of the area and how resource-rich the Australian outback is.”

Mr Coulton said the quality of both the winner and some of the shortlisted photographs in this year’s competition was outstanding.

“While I was most immediately drawn to the winning image, there are other images in this year’s shortlist which are of an extremely high quality and showcase both the skill of their photographers as well as the beauty of the Parkes electorate.

“The selected photos will be featured in a collage on my 2023 Christmas card and also on a limited print run of full sized 2024 calendars.”

Residents will be able to admire all the finalists’ photos when Mr Coulton’s annual Christmas card and fridge magnet calendar is delivered to every household in the Parkes electorate during December.

A limited number of full-sized calendars for the 2024 year will be available.

Helix Resources Ltd’s Black Range prospect in the Cobar-Nyngan area is yielding encouraging results in a previously undrilled area.

Helix’s Managing Director, Mike Rosenstreich recently commented on the drilling results.

“At the Black Range prospect, we have delineated a significant, regional-scale polymetallic anomaly with an intrusiverelated geochemical signature.

“Whilst there are numerous scattered historic copper-mine workings, there has been no previous drilling in the area and the initial RC drilling recently completed by Helix intersected significant pyrite and chalcopyrite mineralisation,” Mr Rosenstreich said.

“Whilst the copper grades in these first two drill holes are not spectacular, within the context of the geochemical and mapping data they do suggest prospectivity for larger scale copper mineralisation.

“The style of mineralisation observed suggests something a bit different for the region – than the ‘Cobar’ copper lode model we have at Canbelego.

“The large-scale and multi-element nature of the anomaly, now supported by highly anomalous drill intercepts leads us to look within the broader anomaly area to define further drill targets, particularly in potential parallel zones immediately west of Black Range.

“Helix has a commanding land position in a highly endowed copper (and gold) province – where we are generating new targets and testing them with the drill bit.

“It’s a numbers game – the more targets you test the greater chance of discovery.

“The team is working hard making new copper discoveries and I look forward to providing further updates,” he said.

A new Duty MLC Labor member of the NSW Legislative Council and former Mayor of Dubbo Stephen Lawrence MLC has recently been announced as the new ‘Duty MLC’ for the state electorate of Barwon.

The Labor member of Parliament, who was elected in March and lives in Dubbo, has declared he will be available to assist people across the electorate.

Mr Lawrence was keen to explain the duty MLC system and what he hopes to achieve in the role.

“People may be wondering what a ‘duty MLC’ is. The system is that in every electorate where the Labor party does not hold the lower house seat, we appoint an upper house MLC (Member of the Legislative Council) to represent the seat in the Labor government and to assist residents,” Mr Lawrence said.

“My hope is to assist people who have issues with government and to be available as a point of contact within the Labor government.

“I will also work with the local MP whenever this needs to occur in the interests of the community,” he said.

The Labor MP has a background as a former Mayor of the Dubbo region and was a barrister for eight years before he was elected to state parliament.

His legal career involved long periods working overseas on conflict and post conflict justice, including 12 months in Afghanistan with the Australian Government.

In his current role, Mr Lawrence is Chair of the Privileges Committee and a member of the Law and Justice Committee, the State Development Committee and Portfolio Committees 1 and 5.

Men’s Shed kindling program has a number of benefits A kindling program being run by the Copper City Men’s Shed has benefited the local community in a number of ways.

Not only has the sale of kindling been a real financial winner for the Copper City Men’s Shed with almost $9,000 returned to the Shed in much needed revenue, it also provides a useful activity for shed members and repurposes timber pallets that would have previously gone to the rubbish tip.

Shed Coordinator Gordon Hill said the support for the kindling program from Peak Gold Mines in recent years has very much been part of that success story.

“The kindling project was trialled with wooden pallets sought from various local businesses in Cobar and the local rubbish tip and the kindling was chipped from timber cut from the pallets,” Mr Hill explained.

The kindling was advertised on social media and sold from the shed during the shed’s open days.

Mr Hill said the Cobar Auto Port Shell Service Station approached the Shed Committee and offered to sell the kindling “and the program took off”.

“The Shed Committee then needed a reliable source of timber pallets for the increased sale of kindling from the Shell Service Station,” he said.

“Peak Gold Mines were very happy to support the Men’s Shed kindling program and Peak Gold Mines staff recently dropped off another load of timber pallets to the Copper commenced providing loads of timber pallets on request, which would have previously City Men’s Shed which will be cut up and sold off as kindling. ▪ Photo contributed gone to the rubbish tip.

Green finish as champions in a dominant display In a dominant display, Green have finished as the 2023 Cobar Junior Basketball champions after defeating Black 38-11 in their grand final game at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre last Wednesday.

The win was a bit of an upset after Black had previously held the upper hand throughout the competition, including beating Green in their two previous encounters.

Green however proved to be the big improvers of the season and last week their hard work culminated in grand final glory.

In addition to Green being awarded winners medals, a number of trophies were also handed out.

The Best & Fairest Male player of the season was Zye Russell with Audrey Josephson named the Best & Fairest Female.

The Player of the Grand Final was Green’s Taj Goonrey.

The season’s Best Allrounder was Hunter Hall with Jake McKervey named the Most Improved player of the competition.

The Spirit of the Game Player was Sonny Stephens with the Team Builder award going to Pippa Dunne.

Hannah Trudgett was named as the Player who never gives up and Braxton Martin was acknowledged as the Player keen to try something new.

Brussel Sprouts held out for a win Brussel Sprouts (formerly named Green) held on to record a three point win over Pink Panthers (Pink) in the Junior Touch 13-16 years competition on Thursday at Ward Oval.

Maddie Bruce headed up the scoring for the Sprouts with two tries (totalling four points as female tries are worth double) with team mates Alora Deppeler, Ethan McLeod, Holly Watt and Kai McCosker all crossing for a try each. For the Panthers, Harry Cousins ran in three tries with Oisin McMullen, Sosie Barton and Will Oborn scoring a try each. Maddie, Will and Harry collected the referee’s Best & Fairest points.

In the other 13-16 years game, Blue Bugs (formerly Blue) put in a big second half effort to finish with a 12-8 win over Mighty Minions (Yellow).

Clay McDonald touched down four times for Blue Bugs with Hayden Seng (2), Lara Stephens, Rhylee Jeffery and Zara Patterson their other try scorers.

Mighty Minions were well served by their try scorers, Ashley Cousins (2), Parker Cryer (2), Ashton Dietrich and Josh Francisco.

Best & Fairest points went to Jack Dunn (Minions), Rhylee and Ashton.

The two matches in the 9-12 years competition were both high scoring games.

Keeping it Orange (formerly Orange) won their game with Keeping it Lemon (Yellow) by a margin of five points, 11-6.

Austin Kane (3), Rhylee Jeffery (2), George McDonald, Judd Josephson and Lara Stephens scored for Keeping it Orange while Dusty McDonald (2), Thomas Preisig (2), Alfie Toomey and Hugo Josephson touched down for Keeping it Lemon’s tries.

Dusty, Lara and Rhylee collected the game’s B&F points.

The other 9-12 years game was an all oneway traffic match for the Redbacks (formerly Red) as they raced away to finish with a 13-0 win over Powerades (Blue).

Tommy George crossed four times, Taj Goonrey and Charlie Nicholson ran in three tries each and Keelan Atuau and Zara Patterson also scored a try each for Redbacks.

B&F points went to Charlie, Ella Oborn (Powerades) and Kasalia Fakahua (Powerades).

CATS have had a near purr-fect start in new touch comp Maddie Bruce contributed eight points to the CATS’ winning tally of 20 points in their win in the Opens Mixed Touch competition on Thursday night at Ward Oval.

The CATS were too good for Urban Strength winning their Round 3 game last week 20-1.

Bruce scored four times (female tries are worth double points) with Jayden Paul (2), Harry Cousins (2), Ashley Cousins, Axel Fairfull, Clayton Louis, Mel Mills, Sam Best and Seb Best CATS’ other scorers.

Jayden Cryer was Urban Strength’s lone try scorer.

Urban Strength’s players Steve Gillette and Troy Hill shared the referee’s Best & Fairest points with CATS’ Seb Best.

The match of the round was the game between Phat Athletes and Red Hot Chilli Steppers.

There were 11 players competing in the Men’s Golf Stableford game on Saturday.

It was a close tussle between Stewart Fraser and Bill Fugar, a left-hander against a righthander, an Iron Ringer against the Louth Ringin, with Fraser eventually getting up by one shot. Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence came third, four shots back beating Scott Mayne on a countback.

Fraser grabbed the Nearest the Pin prize on the 3rd hole and the evergreen Max Phillips won the prize on the 15th. The rest were not won.

Peter Payne to head up the Camels for next season Cobar Camels Rugby Union Club stalwart Peter ‘Payney’ Payne was elected as the club’s new president at their annual general meeting on Sunday night.

Payney played his first game of rugby with the Cobar club at age 17 and has been actively involved both on and off the field ever since.

He’s previously held various executive committee roles within the club, including vice president and treasurer, however it’s the first time that Payney has taken on the top job.

Payney said after a dismal 2023 season, he’s keen to get the club back on track.

He’ll be assisted this season by two more Rugby Old Boys, Kel Ellicott and Kevin ‘Rusty’ Mitchell, as the club’s vice presidents with Samantha Ward returning as secretary.

Cairo Haronga was returned as club registrar and will continue on as interim treasurer (until such time a new treasurer is elected).

Cairo will also assist Tiffany Temminck with social media and events management.

Tiffany also took on the Canteen manager’s role and past club president Tony Jacklin will head up the grounds maintenance team.

Nine more club members were elected to the general committee.

Locals and ring-ins enjoy golf charity day

There was an excellent roll-up of 75 players who took part in the Iron Ring Golf Fun on Sunday.

There were golfers of all skills, from former champions to once-a-year players and also first timers.

For some of the players it was a fairly long day, but everyone was in a festive mood and, with the accompanying good weather, the day was enjoyed by one and all.

Many marveled at how far Matt Egan hit his drive on the 18th hole and Garry Wilkin couldn’t conceal his excitement when he won a Nearest the Pin prize to pick up two Shrixon golf balls – his favourites.

The surprise team on the day was the trio named the “The Three Bears”, comprised of the McLeod family (Dean, Nadine and Haymish) who took out first place.

Nadine also won the Ladies Longest Drive prize making it a good day out for the McLeods.

In second place were the “Bony M” team of Paul, Colin and Sam Kershaw with “The Seekers”, Jason Foster, Chris Powell and Tim Turton, finishing third.

Back in 4th place were “Snap, Crackle & Pop”, Bill and Todd Fugar and Geoff Dunne with 5th place going to “The Candy Cows”, David Tomek, Sean Bayliss and Christine Miles.

In 6th place were “The Queen Bees”, David and Tina Gordon and Dale Dunkley with the “Peter, Paul & Mary” team of Jay Egan, Jo and Tena Blignaut rounding out 7th place.

Matt Egan had the Men’s Longest Drive.
