Time to roll up our sleeves

It’s Cobar residents turn to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated when the army rolls into town next Monday. The Australian Defence Force has been tasked to assist with the emergency response in the Western NSW Local Health District with personnel forming mobile teams to administer COVID vaccines at pop-up clinics across the district. They will arrive in Cobar on Monday morning (September 6) with walk-in clinics administering both Pfizer and AstraZeneca to commence at 10.30am and run until 4pm. Two more days of clinics are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept 7 (9am-4pm) and Wednesday, Sept 8 (9am-2pm). Residents are advised to take their Medicare card and a form of identification (eg driver’s licence), however people will still be vaccinated without a Medicare card. (The Medicare card ensures that the vaccinations are registered on the Australian Immunisation Register.) Cobar Shire Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said while COVID testing on our sewerage came back negative last week, it is not a time to be complacent. He said with earlier positive tests (as recently as August 21), the community still needs to be vigilant as “COVID is all around us”. Cases have been reported in Dubbo, Wellington, Bathurst, Mudgee, Parkes, Narromine, Nyngan, Bourke, Brewarrina and Wilcannia. As of Monday night, the Western NSW Local Health District has had 369 cases since the Delta outbreak, 17 patients are in hospital with four of those in intensive care.

Jimmy Neyland rolled up his sleeve on Friday for a COVID vaccination with nurse Lisa Travis at the Cobar Health Service. Staff carried out 282 vaccinations at Friday’s clinic adding to the 151 vaccinations they administered to local residents last month. Health Service Manager Mary Urquhart reports a cross section of the community from 18 year olds, to mums and dads, and seniors (one of whom was 89) lined up last week for their AstraZeneca shots. The next opportunity for locals to get vaccinated will be next week at the Western NSW Local Health District/Australian Defence Force pop-up clinics at the Cobar Youth & Fitness Centre from Monday September 6 through to Wednesday September 8.
