Cobar Shire Council’s new Early Learning Centre (ELC) at Ward Oval is getting close to being completed. Council is hoping the centre will be ready for occupancy by mid to late August. Bailey set off from Perth on March 3 with a goal of walking across Australia to raise $20,000 for the Foundation.

To date he’s raised $10,000.

“The Foundation is a not-for-profit charity that goes to about 427 indigenous communities across Australia providing pathways programs for the youth to not only focus on literacy, but to also provide leadership opportunities,” Bailey told The Cobar Weekly.

He said the values of the Foundation aligned with his own values of inspiring confidence through education.

“Literacy’s the basis of education and education’s the basis for opportunity and success in life,” he said.

While Bailey’s done a few 50km and 100km walks in the past, he’s never attempted a walk of this magnitude (almost 4,000km) before.

Initially he didn’t set a time frame as to how long the trip would take, and estimated that it would take him about six months.

“I was just trying to keep up a somewhat steady pace.”

He recently set himself a finish date for August 23 in Newcastle, which means he’ll now need to walk a bit over 22km per day to make the target.

Bailey’s been pushing a cart on the journey which weighs close to 100kg when fully load- Bailey Meyers left Perth on March 3 with a goal of walking across Australia and when he passed through Cobar last Wednesday, he’d completed over 80 per cent of his almost ed.

It contains pretty much everything required 4,000km journey.

School’s Tree Day

Cobar Public School took part in Planet Ark’s Schools Tree Day on Friday ahead of National Tree Day on Sunday. Planet Ark was established in 1992 with a vision of creating a world where people live in balance with nature. National Tree Day started in 1996 and has since grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event. Peak Mine donated $500 to purchase plants for the school and Sullivans Mining & Hardware donated two watering systems and shovels. Peak staff members Molly Barraclough and Laura Newton, with Shane McMullen from Sullivans, are pictured above helping CPS students Marley Ryan, Jax Claus and Josie Myer-Ryan to plant some of the plants in the school’s memorial garden on Friday.

Less road funding Cobar Shire Councillors were advised at last week’s July Ordinary Council Meeting that Council will in the future receive less grant funding for roads.

Council’s Director of Engineering Heinz Kausche advised that Council had been allocated funding from the Regional Emergency Road Repair Fund (RERRF) that would take them through to 2027 for road maintenance.

Mr Kausche said Council had however lost repair grant money for capital works on regional roads.

“From my understanding Council’s been using that to extend the sealed road network on our regional roads,” Mr Kausche said.

“We’ve lost that capacity but we have gained additional maintenance money.

Mayor Jarrod Marsden clarified that was funding that Council had previously used to spend in rotation on the Louth Road, Tilpa Road and Ivanhoe Road.

Mr Kausche said Council will still get funding from the Regional Road Block Grant program which will help “but certainly not to the level that we had previously”.

Block Grants may be spent on preservation, restoration and enhancement works.

“Fixing Country Roads is no more. It was a separate funding which again allowed us to do capital works and Fixing Local Roads as well, “We’ve been given some additional money but a fair bit has been taken away,” Mr Kausche said.

Cr Marsden advised the Royalties for Regions fund has also been taken off the table.

He said that has been replaced by “a big regional bucket of money”. “The Government is saying it will be easier to apply for funds because it’s not tied to specific subjects.”

Cr Lillian Simpson said she’s enjoyed her first term as a councillor and will be standing again as she feels she still has a lot to contribute to the running of the community.

“I would like to see some younger community minded people putting up their hands to be councillors,” Cr Simpson said.

“The next term is going to be challenging as we navigate our way through the maze that grant funding has become, to maintain the standard of roads etc, throughout our shire.

“My main focus for being on council is to try and improve the level of healthcare in our town, and I feel there is still a long way to go to achieve that. Also, I am an advocate for tourism and culture within our community, and feel that we still have room for improvement in those fields as well.”

The Cobar Business Association held a Christmas in July fundraiser at the Great Western Hotel on Thursday night. Glyphosate ruling a win for farmers

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has welcomed the Federal Court’s recent ruling that glyphosate does not cause cancer as being a win for farmers in his electorate.

“The class action against Roundup companies Monsanto and Bayer claimed exposure to glyphosate caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma, however following a lengthy trial, Justice Michael Lee said the plaintiffs failed to prove the chemical causes cancer,” Mr Coulton said.

“This will be welcome news for farmers across Australia, as glyphosate is one of the most commonly used products to combat weeds.

“It allows farmers to be more productive and sustainable through no or minimal till farming which protects soil structure, moisture and nutrients, and ultimately increases the storage of soil carbon.

“I personally saw a huge change in the health of the soil on my property as a result of using glyphosate and was able to retain important topsoil that would otherwise be lost,” Mr Coulton said.

“Glyphosate is integral to the Australian farming landscape and if farmers are to continue to be the efficient, innovative and productive operators they are today, glyphosate must play a leading part.”

Aboriginal DFSV Support Worker Domestic Family Sexual Violence (DFSV) (Identified Position) Cobar

CatholicCare provides a broad range of innovative social services in response to the needs of communities in western NSW. We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to contribute to our new Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV) program. This position offers you the opportunity to play a significant role in supporting women and children, their families, and the broader community in addressing domestic and family violence.

In this role you will provide trauma informed and culturally appropriate responses to individuals and families who experience DFSV, to build capacity within the community and to respond to DFSV through community events, workshops, groups, and to work in partnership with other services to improve services and outcomes for individuals and families who experience domestic family violence.

This position is full-time, based in Cobar and offers a maximum term contract until 26 June 2026. If further funding is made available, an additional contract may be offered to the incumbent.

Roosterettes came off second best to Flyers

The Cobar Roosterettes came off second best when they took on the second placed Coolah Flyers in their Round 13 Castlereagh Ladies League Tag match at Coolah on Saturday.

The Roosterettes were beaten 34-4 with Cobar captain/coach Brianna Watson reporting the wet and muddy conditions were not ideal for footy however she said her side did the best they could.

“By the halftime break, it was 30-0.

“By full time it ended up 34-4, so our second half was unreal!” Watson said.

“Sosie Barton put our four points on the board after scoring out wide off a penalty tap.”

Watson said it was obvious just by looking at Neve Carter and Molly Carter after the match that they’d both had big games.

“They are always the two diving for tags and they finished as the dirtiest,” Watson said.

Brennah Aumua earned the Players’ Player honour.

“I’m super proud of the girls,” Watson said.

“There’s one week to go for us, so we will train hard this week and hopefully get the win at home for our last game.”

The Cobar team is currently in 7th spot on the ladder and will take on 8th placed Gilgandra this Saturday in the final round at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

The Fraser brothers, Alec and Mark, took on the father and son team of Don and Kyle Roberts in the bowls Pairs Championship semi final at the Golfie on Sunday.

Cool, calm and collected sums up how the Frasers played their game.

The Roberts duo are veteran Championships champions which is enough to make the most confident bowlers tremble but that was not the case for the Fraser brothers on Sunday.

Throughout their game the Frasers maintained their lead and finished with a +8 win to go through to the final.

Chilly winds on Sunday played havoc with the social bowlers.

There were 18 brave (if not half frozen) participants on the green making up three games of triples.

The outright winners on +6 were Doug Hudson (the resident Cobar Bowls Burglar) and his cohorts David Thomas and Jim Goonrey.

Their opposition, Tony Polack, Karen Daly and Degan Brown, could only stand by and watch as Hudson made away with the loot!

Bian Smith, John ‘Shark’ Daly and Allan Gardoll finished as the day’s runners-up after they had a +2 win against Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and David Kershaw.

The game between Russell Brosi, Darryl ‘Dasha’ Jermyn and Randall Hall, who were up against Ian Prendergast, David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Mick McManus, was very tight with team Brosi winning by +1.

It was noted that their heads (what you call it when the Jack is closely surrounded by many bowls versus not very close at all) were far superior to those on the neighbouring rink (in the Burglars game) throughout the day.

Local riders invited to Australia’s biggest horse event Two local horse riders will be attending Australia’s biggest horse event, Equitana, in Melbourne in November.

Lila and Ella Armstrong are two of six riders chosen by their riding coach Sarah Venamore, from Equiste in Leeton, to help her present a group lesson demonstration at the event.

Equitana is held over four days and is an event that brings members of the equestrian community together to showcase all equestrian disciplines.

Sarah, a member of the Pony Club Australia national coaching committee, the Equestrian Australia state coaching committee and a state pony club dressage coach, has been selected to showcase her leadership skills in coaching multiple riders at different levels in a group lesson.

Lila has been coached by Sarah for the past two years and Ella has been working with her for just under two years.

The pair are taught through weekly online lessons and also regularly attend Sarah’s junior coaching clinics at Leeton.

Sarah said she chose the Cobar sisters as they live in a remote area and, other than their local pony club, don’t have the opportunities other towns and riders have access to.

They will join four other students from Leeton, Condobolin and Harden at the event.

The girls are super excited to be representing Equiste on the big stage.

There was a good roll up of 150 players for the 34th running of the popular golfing event. Golfers were only able to play 16 holes of the course with the 7th and 11th holes out of action due to the wet conditions. CSA kept its winning streak going and once again took out the trophy this year when they finished with 331 points. Tritton were runners-up again on 348 and Peak finished third on 369 points. The winning Mine Teams were Manly Sux with 52 ½ , Prendys (53), Bonnie B’s (54 1/3), TNC (55), Ausmine (55 ½) and Sharp As (56 5/6).
