A crowd of locals and visitors (along with two ABC reporters) were treated to a free piano concert in the main street on Sunday when music streamed out of the Library arcade as part of Cobar’s Pop Up Piano official launch. The Cobar community recently took delivery of a free piano as part of the ABC’s Pop Up Piano initiative which aims to bring music to public spaces.

Out of 380 public nominations, 19 towns across the country were selected to receive a community piano, and Cobar was one of them.

The Piano has been unearthing everyday pianists from all over Australia through the celebration of the street piano, with regular Australians invited to play the piano at various locations around the country.

One of the local pianists who caught everyone’s attention on Sunday was 22 year old Tony Mitchell who played from memory.

Tony has been playing for about 10 years and is self-taught.

Tony said he did have a few lessons when he was a young child but said he wasn’t keen to play the songs he was given by his teacher.

He wanted to play his own music and so he turned to YouTube.

“I can listen to a song and play it for you, but it takes me about 10 minutes to set it up and try and play around with it to make it work,” Tony said.

Other talented locals who played on Sunday included Isabella Degn, Leah McClure, Tim McClure, Cathy Francisco, Joanna McClure and Ness Cavalot.

Local music teacher Judy Toomey and the ABC Western Plains reporter Zaarkacha Marlan and journalist Claudia Sullivan Seniors Singing Group also performed as part interviewing talented local piano player Tony Mitchell after his performance at the Pop of Sunday’s Pop Up Piano launch.

Local emergency services called to car accident

Emergency services from Cobar and Nyngan were called to assist following a single vehicle accident on the Barrier Highway on Thursday afternoon.

Police, NSW Ambulance, Fire and Rescue NSW, State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service and traffic management control personnel responded to the call for assistance just after 3.30pm following a report that two people were trapped in a vehicle approximately 60km east of Cobar on the Barrier Highway.

According to the police report, the driver of a white dual cab utility had initially veered beyond the northern kerb alignment and off the roadway.

He then overcorrected the steering which caused the vehicle to hit a tree beyond the southern kerb alignment.

The 48 year old male driver and his 44 year old female passenger, (both non local), suffered significant injuries and were treated by paramedics at the scene.

They were trapped in the vehicle for approximately one hour before being released

by Cobar SES and FRNSW. After they were freed, they were transported via ambulance to the Cobar Hospital in a stable condition.

Police are awaiting the driver’s blood test results before taking any formal action.

More Rotary donation recipients

The Rotary Club of Cobar has handed out three more donations this week. The club donated $1,000 to the Cobar Youth and Community Centre’s PCYC Fit for Life Program, which is run in partnership with Cobar Police, with assistance from Interrelate, to provide mentoring and support for local high school students to ensure they are connected and engaged with the community. The centre also received another $1,000 for their Nutritional Program and a third donation of $1,000 was made to The Cobar Weekly newspaper. “But there’s still a way to go, and every donation helps make a real impact.

“While I’m gearing up to climb 28 floors, the Cops and Ambos will probably just be ordering their first coffee of the day … secretly wishing they were firefighters.

“Banter aside, mental health affects all of us, Cops, Ambos, Firies, Ambos and Cops wishing to be Firies, we’ve all got skin in the game.

“This climb is about supporting each other, raising awareness, and making sure no one gets left behind.”

Near-new chosen in favour of new

Cobar Shire Councillors voted to delay purchasing a new prime mover to support their road construction operations and have instead supported a proposal to purchase a secondhand watercart.

Council’s Director of Engineering Services, Amer Twfik put the proposal to councillors at last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

Mr Tawfik told councillors a twinsteer rigid water cart was currently for sale locally.

He said it is essentially “brand new” despite its secondhand status.

Mr Tawfik suggested purchasing the watercart would be a viable option to replacing one of Council’s existing four prime movers as part of Council’s 2024-2025 plant replacement program.

His proposal outlined the immediate operational benefits, cost savings compared to new equipment and hire costs and explained it would better aligned with the road crews existing licences.

The Western Landcare NSW highly anticipated 2025 Life and Light Photography Competition is now open and this year offers over $6,000 worth of prizemoney.

Run in partnership with the NSW Government and major sponsors Aurelia Metals, Western Local Land Services and Cobar Shire Council, the competition captures the essence of rural NSW through the lens of amateur and semi-professional photographers.

For over two decades, the Life and Light competition has fostered a community of visual storytellers and cultivated an ever-growing archive of photographic works that reflect the diversity, resilience and beauty of Western NSW. The competition is open to all amateur and semi-professional photographers from across the region.

This year’s theme, Through Our Eyes – Life, Land and Light in Western NSW, invites photographers to explore the dynamic intersections between people, the natural landscape and light in Western NSW. Freezing weather

Cobar residents have endured a stretch of freezing weather over the past week with overcast skies and rain contributing to the drop in temperatures.

Temperatures every day this week were below the long term average of 16 degrees for this time of year.

Last Wednesday kicked off with a very cold low of 2.5 before it warmed up to a high of 15.2 degrees.

Thursday wasn’t much better with a minimum of 2.6 before it reached a top of 15.5 degrees during the day.

Friday’s start was 5.9 before reaching a top temperature of 13.6.

Saturday was our coldest day of the week with a top temperature of 13.5 degrees recorded and Sunday was similar with a maximum of 13.7.

On Monday it only reached a top of 14 degrees.

Rain on Wednesday (0.4mm), Thursday (0.2mm), Saturday (5.4mm), Sunday (3.2mm) and Monday (6mm) has seen the total for the month hit 30mm.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, we are in for more cold days and possible rain for the rest of this week but we may experience some warmer temperatures over the weekend.

We can however only expect a top of 12 degrees today with a chance of a shower.

The outlook for tomorrow is cloudy with a top of 13 and a chance of rain.

Friday is expected to be our coldest day with just 11 degrees predicted with a high chance of rain.

Saturday should be partly cloudy, with a top of 15 degrees and Sunday and Monday are both expected to reach maximums of 17.

Cobar’s Picnic Races is an all important meeting The Picnic Races meeting at Cobar on Saturday has added importance being the last chance for owners and trainers to earn points with their horses in the race to qualify for the rich Picnic Championship Finals in September at Dubbo.

Prior to this year, a $50,000 Final was held over 1,400 metres however a $50,000 Final over 1,000 metres will also be run on the same day at Dubbo in 2025.

The total prize pool for the Finals of $100,000 has further increased interest and competition over the statewide Picnic circuit which began with Geurie in September 2024 and has taken in 25 meetings prior to Cobar.

Points are allocated on a sliding scale with the highest being for Cup races down to the lower class restricted races.

With 12 starters, plus emergencies, for each of the Finals, and some horses being turned out for spells or other reasons, there is likely to be changes in the qualifiers after the Cobar meeting on Saturday and before the Finals at Dubbo.

The current leading point scorers are: Blackhill Kitty— Connie Greig (trainer) 58 points, Billy Bent Ear—Connie Greig—55, Individualist—Connie Greig—43, Namarari—Mont Waters—39, Allande—Connie Greig—37, Pahang—Connie Greig—35, Laisvas— Connie Greig—30, Mr Pointer—Wayne Prisk—30, Real Salty—Connie Greig—29, I’m Scarlett—Connie Greig—28, Foxstorm— Ashley Gibson—27, Chookster—Connie Greig—25.

Darts Nationals

Local darts player Tony Brown was selected to play with the NSW team at this year’s Darts Australia 2025 Australian Championships which finished on Saturday in Brisbane.

Brown played well, with a three dart average of 77.54, to rank 19th in the Men’s Singles tournament; he was 18th in the Men’s Doubles with a 73.25 3DA; and finished 28th in Mixed Doubles with a 3DA of 70.82.

The NSW team finished 4th in the Team Champion State event, 5th in Men’s Teams Event and missed the finals of the Men’s Peter Mac competition.

Coaches stoked with their teams Cobar Junior League Under U10 coach Andrew Hill was “absolutely stoked” with the effort his team put into their Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League match against St John’s Gold in Dubbo on Saturday.

Trig Wicks pulled off great tackles and had some good runs which earned him this week’s Coach’s Award.

Kyhson Stewart was a real workhorse tackling machine all match, which helped to earn him the Subway Award.

Coach Hill said Jason Thou Cleary was a standout in attack and defence after scoring four tries and tackling everywhere on the field.

Maddox Best was praised for his relentless defence after running down the opposition’s players three times and pulling off try saving tackles.

Billy Dunn did a great job playing in the first receiver role. He also landed a conversion.

There were some big runs from smart thinking Lucas Davey, who even gave one of his opponents a wedgie!

Bella McCormack also had some great runs in attack.

Hard running Tate Stephens played well and proved to be a hard target for the St John’s Gold defenders. At one stage it took four tacklers to stop him!

Lenny Hill showed a big improvement in his body tackles.

In their Under 11s uncontested match with St John’s Gold, Josh McMillan and Indie Burke scored tries while the Coaches Award went to Brad Hampton and Cooper Trudgett was named the Roosters Players’ Player.

The Roosters Under 12s played Wellington in their Round 10 game on Saturday at Wellington.

Coach Daniel Stephens said the whole Cobar team “played brilliantly”.

“It was a great defensive team effort.

“Every player dug in and played a full game,” Coach Stephens said.

The Players’ Player honour went to Harlym Curtis and the Coach’s Award was shared by Charlie Miller and Sonny Stephens.

The Roosters Under 16s had a tough match against St John’s Gold and were beaten 60-0.

Corey Piggott earned the Coach’s award and Players’ Player honour. Ryan Mugugia was another standout player for the Roosters.

Five Cobar Girls Junior Rugby League players, Under 14s Hannah Trudgett, Isabelle Gillette, Rubi Reid and Myah Paul along with Under 16s Sandy Maloney travelled to Dubbo on Sunday for the Dubbo & District Rugby Legue development trails.

All five were selected to play in Bathurst in September.

In Mini League games played on Sunday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval, the Under 8s awards were earned by Michael Arnold, Sione Fakahua, Nicholaos Stylianos and Ira Rambasa.

In the Under 6s competition, Halle Egan and Baxter Woods collected the awards and the Little League Stars award went to young Hudson Cronin, who’s not quite old enough to register but goes every week with his big brother and joins in.

Damp re-start for netball season It was a damp re-start to the Senior Netball competition on Friday night with the second game called off early after it was deemed too wet to play.

Divas appear to have lost no form over their two weeks school holiday break and sensationally beat ATC Angels 44-16 in Friday night’s Round 10 match.

Divas shot out to take an 11-2 lead by the first break and were ahead 27-5 by half time.

Having done plenty of work in the first half, they took their foot off the accelerator in the second half and cruised home to record a 28 point win.

Divas were strong at both ends of the court and were well served by shooter Lauren Urquhart and defender Amie Hill.

ATC Angels’ best on court were Niamh Anderson and Heidi Mainey.

The game’s Sportsmanship awards went to Amie Hill and Heidi Mainey.

The match between Smash Ups and Pink Galahs was called off early in the third quarter due to rain.

Competing in the Junior Girls High Jump event at Cobar Public School’s Athletics Carnival on Thursday at Ward Oval were Maggie Hupp, Mabel Hill, Rosie George.

Apart from the Intermine Golf Challenge on Saturday (see report on Page 22) and Donald Trump playing golf in Scotland, there was only the Wednesday mid-week golf to report on for the Men’s Golf competition.

Since he retired from work, Garry Wilkin is fast becoming a mid-week specialist, and he won again last Wednesday with a score of 33.

He won on a countback from Brendon Falzon and could be putting himself into a higher tax bracket with all his extra winnings.

Brien Obray was third with 31.

Peter ‘China’ Brien only scored 25 points but managed to take out the Nearest the Pin prize on the 8th hole, where he recently recorded his fourth hole-in-one.

Wilko won the easy third hole pin prize.

With miserable weather on Sunday, no golf was played.

There’s another big day of golf this weekend with the Men’s Foursome Championships to be contested on Saturday while the Bill Bartlett Memorial Four-Ball-Best-Ball game will be played on Sunday.

Final round will decide final five!

The final five teams in the 2025 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League First Grade competition will not be known until all the fulltime sirens at three different venues this Saturday afternoon.

The only certainty is that the Coolah Kangaroos will be the minor premiers but the finishing order of another six clubs, who are in the fight for the remaining four semi-final berths, is very much a mystery and will not be resolved until the results from the games played at Cobar, Coolah and Gulgong are known.

Currently the Coonabarabran Unicorns hold down second position on the ladder after they scored a tense 34-28 win over the Cobar Roosters at Coonabarabran on Saturday.

However the Unicorns now face the daunting task of trying to be the first team to lower the Coolah Kangaroos colours this season when the travel to Coolah this Saturday.

A win guarantees them second place and qualifying semi final hosting rights with the Boronia Cup thrown in as an added bonus.

Sitting just one point adrift of the Unicorns on the competition ladder are the Narromine Jets who stayed in the race for second when they downed the Warren Bulldogs 30-20 at Warren in their Round 13 match on Saturday.

The Jets can expect a warm reception at Cobar’s Tom Knight Memorial Oval this Saturday, especially with the Roosters still in contention for the semis.

Fifth position on the ladder is a three-way shoot-out between the Cobar Roosters, the Coonamble Bears and the Dunedoo Swans with all three clubs sitting on 25 points.

The Swans will finish on 28 points as they have the bye this week, and if Cobar and Coonamble both lose their matches, the Swans will make the top five.

If either, or both, Cobar and Coonamble win their Round 14 games this Saturday, then it will come down to points differential to determine who gets the nod to play on after Round 14 and, in that regard, the Swans are the worst placed.

In their narrow 34-28 loss to Coonabarabran on Saturday, Tim Hillam and Kai Taylor crossed for two tries each with Lochlan Ford also touching down for a try for the Roosters.

Big field of keen golfers

Among the field of 174 golfers for the Intermine Golf Challenge on Saturday were Scott Mayne, Ben McBride, Javed Colling, Gerard Lowe, Josh Gelder and Matt Armstrong who were keen to get moving, mainly to warm up!

Difficult shooting conditions

Cold, windy weather made conditions difficult for the field of four shooters at Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s 25m Rapid Fire event on Sunday.

Robert Neate served as range officer while the scoring was handled by Michael Garbutt.

Tim Turton shot 523 off pistol and, with his handicap of 64, finished with a total score of 587.

Chris Driver recorded 492 off pistol and, with his handicap of 85, he finished with a total score of 577.

Adam Green’s score off pistol was 456 and coupled with his handicap of 117, he finished the day with a total score 573.

Michael Garbutt, who has a handicap of 78, finished with a total score of 554 after he shot 476 off pistol.

This Sunday’s event is a 10m Air Pistol shoot.

After a five year absence in the competition, Endeavor Mine are now the Intermine Golf champions, ending CSA’s run on a bleak, cold and windy day on Saturday.

Luckily the forecast of 10-20mm of rain didn’t eventuate (only 5mm was recorded on the course on Friday night) so play went ahead with 58 teams (174 players) taking part.

Endeavor had a combined nett score of 375, CSA 390 and Peak finished with 406 nett.

Unfortunately Tritton did not field any teams this year.

Enjoying the spoils of first place were the team of Matt Egan, Johnny Best and John Claus (59 nett) who have been spotted out on the course practicing for the event over the past few months.

The runners-up were brothers Alec and Mark ‘George’ Fraser along with Jack Kershaw (60 nett) and third place went to Matt Russell with father and son Anthony and Corin Ah See (60 1/3 nett).

Nearest the Pin winners on the 3rd hole were Narelle Kriz and Ben Cook, 7th hole Sally Bannister and Nick Buckman, 8th hole Jannine Wilkin and Craig Jones, 11th hole Narelle Kriz and John Carlaw while on the 15th hole, Nicole Buckman and Peter Hutchinson were closest to the flag.

The Longest Drive winners on the 18th hole were Latisha Bennett and Nick Buckman.

Susan Goonrey and Dave Avery had the Straightest Drives on the 9th hole.

At the conclusion of the presentation, the golf cart raffle, donated by major sponsor Tyre Doctor, was drawn with Lisa Herbert from Nyngan, the winner.

For the ladies competition last week, the weather continued to be miserable on Sunday and only the front nine holes were open for play (after more rain late on Saturday).

No ladies were keen for a competition game deciding that one day in the freezing cold was enough for one weekend although, there was one lady golfer spotted on the course in the afternoon getting some practice in for the up coming 54 hole Club Championships (including the Phyllis Gardoll Trophy) which will take place this weekend.

Last Wednesday’s Stableford win went to Sally Bannister after she scored 37 points.

Geraldine Francisco was one point behind on 36 and Susan Goonrey had 32 for third place.

Those closest to the pin on the 11th hole were Sally Bannister, Geraldine Francisco and Ann Dunn.
