Dido’s riding on the sheep’s back to help Dubbo Home Stay Local businessman, grazier and Councillor Chris ‘Dido’ Deighton is helping to coordinate a livestock fundraiser to aid Macquarie Home Stay in Dubbo.

Dido decided to join a footy mate in Baradine, Adrian Worrell, whose family had the aim of raising $30,000 to help fund the Home Stay’s new extension.

While Adrian organised a few farmers in his area to donate “a beast or two” to help them reach their target, Dido has decided to “ride on the sheep’s back”.

“I have changed my quest up as we can’t so much do the cow side of things out here but we could have a go with sheep because they are more available,” he said.

Dido is hoping he’ll be able to fill his truck with donated sheep and take it to a sheep sale in Dubbo next week.

“Truck-wise I can take 140-150 head.

“If I get more, I can take the trailer as well.

“But if we get substantially more, I’ll make other arrangements,” he said.

Speaking to The Cobar Weekly last week, Dido said he already has more than 110 head promised from local landholders.

“Let’s say we truck 150, depending what people are donating, but if we get 150 sheep, we should be walking away with $15,000, quite easily,” Dido estimated.

“Having a baby, surgery, tests and scans, cancer treatment, accident and emergency, rehabilitation—there’s just so many reasons why people have to leave their home town for their medical needs.

“What resonates is that these donations stay locally for locals to use, often in times of uncertainty and worry.

“What has been highlighted from this appeal is that it has enabled the communities that use us to support the appeal at a level they can afford, or in a way that’s relevant to them.”

Rod said whether it’s the donation of one or a few animals, they all add up and are helping to build their new CWA of NSW Guesthouse.

“This new building of 26 units is a fantastic, much needed addition to our current 23 units and we will be able to support even more patients with appropriate accommodation.

“Some will be for just a day, while others are for many weeks on end.

“These donations are paying for the bricks and mortar of this new guesthouse.

“It will be here for many decades, and what a great thing it is knowing that the impact of these donations will last for so long,” Rod said.

It has been the week from hell!

When it comes to weather, this past week has been the week from hell—or that’s what it’s felt like—with a heatwave that’s crossing the state pushing the thermometer into the 40s.

It hit 40 degrees late in the afternoon on Australia Day and topped out at 43.7 degrees on Monday, which was 9.2 degrees above the average for this time of the year.

The severe heat continued on Tuesday with the Bureau of Meteorology recording a top of 41.5 in Cobar.

And while it didn’t make it into the 40s again yesterday, it looked like we would reach 38 degrees as predicted by the Bureau.

There hasn’t been much of a reprieve overnight from the hot day time temperatures with the mercury only dropping to a minimum of 26.4 degrees overnight on Monday and 25.8 on Tuesday, the two hottest nights of the week.

Today we’re heading for a somewhat cooler day, but it will still be very warm, with an expected top of 36 degrees.

The thermometer will start to climb north again tomorrow with 38 degrees the expected maximum, 38 is the forecast for Saturday and 37 degrees is the predicted maximum for both Sunday and Monday.

While we did get a few spits of rain and some impressive lightning in a storm on Monday night, the Bureau didn’t record any rain for the week.

There is a slight chance that there’s rain on the horizon for Saturday this week.

“Successful exploration drilling extended known mineralisation up- and down-dip approximately 150m north of the Jubilee deposit, which remains open to the north along strike and at depth.

“Strong copper grades were intersected down -dip at New Cobar, indicating the mineral system continues at depth.

“And drilling results confirmed high-grade mineralisation occurs in the hangingwall of the main Perseverance (Hercules) deposit, and is easily accessible, located within 50m of the existing underground development.”

Aurelia’s Chief Development and Technical Officer, Andrew Graham said the positive copper and gold results from the recent exploration drilling were pleasing.

“Results such as these demonstrate that the mine has a strong future and supports its transition from gold-zinc-lead dominant to coppergold dominant ores in the near-term,” Mr Graham said.

“The Jubilee North and New Cobar results are particularly pleasing.

At the end of the survey Council will be advised of the locations of existing leaks and will formalise a plan to repair them.

Another chance to boost on farm connectivity

The Labor Government has announced it will open a third round of the On Farm Connectivity Program later this year.

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said while he welcomes this investment into the ag-tech grants program, he hopes the application process for this next round will be improved to make it fairer for all farmers after the debacle of Round 2.

“Applications for Round 2 were open for less than a week before the $18 million in funding was exhausted, meaning many farmers in the Parkes electorate missed out,” Mr Coulton said.

The program provides rebates of up to 50 per cent for eligible equipment and technology for farmers to aid with monitoring livestock, improving efficiency in water use and improving soil quality through smart farming.

Cobar’s newest Australian citizen Felicity Dempsey has swapped the ‘Emerald Isle’ and will now call Australia (and Cobar home) after she officially became an Australian citizen during Sunday’s Australia Day celebrations. Felicity came to Australia from Ireland 10 years ago and was working at the Tilpa Pub when she met a local boy. Cobar then became her “home away from home”. “I fell in love with Cobar, it has an amazing small town community, where everyone just becomes like family. Felicity said after all these years, it just felt natural to make it official. Felicity is pictured with Mayor Jarrod Marsden who officiated at her citizenship ceremony.

It could be said that the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club has one of the best committees in town with four members of the club nominated for this year’s Services to Sport Australia Day award. John Stingemore, Michael Garbutt, Anita Neate and Robert Neate were among the eight nominees for this year’s award. Cobar Little Athletics committee members Brenda and Troy Knight were named as the joint winners of this year’s Services to Sport award.

Yabbies’ one race wonders

The key to winning the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club’s ultimate prize, the Club Championship trophy, is consistency.

All club events are handicapped and swimmers nominate a time for each.

Success is not measured by who is the fastest but rather who is the most accurate and, ultimately, the most consistent swimmer.

This swimming season has seen many ‘one race wonders’ with only a handful of swimmers able to turn in consistent results.

Over the past two weeks a cluster of consistent Yabbies has surfaced.

On Tuesday night James Daymond, Murray Harland and Tom Jones displayed some of that consistency when each recorded two podium finishes.

Daymond won the 50m event (with 0.06 seconds off his nominated time) and was second in the 30m with 0.07.

Harland finished first in the 100m swim with 0.15 seconds off his time and was second in the 50m (on 0.28 seconds).

Jones recorded two third places (0.34 in the 50m and 1.25 in the 100m).

Bob Clark started the night off well clocking 0.03 seconds off his time in the 30m event which landed him the win but he could only manage 6th place in the 50m and 10th for the 100m.

The previous week Ben Plush and Tom Jones swam spot on their nominated times to win an event each however the pair too were only ‘one race wonders’!

In comparison, Henry Knight featured in all four events last week, claiming a first, two seconds and a third placing.

Plush won the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim, with 0.00 with Knight and Bob Clark tying for second spot when they both finished within 0.16 seconds of their nominated times.

Jones grabbed first place glory in the 50m event with a 0.00 time with Josh Mainey just behind in second place on 0.03 and Bill Fugar was third with 0.10.

Knight was well ahead of the field in the 100m event to finish within 0.13 seconds of his nominated time.

Murray Harland was next best on 0.40 to just pip Fugar who finished on 0.41.

Shepherd stars in convincing win for unbeaten Bandits After their Twenty/20 cricket win over the Concrete Cowboys on Friday night, the Back Door Bandits have sealed the minor premiership and are now only one win away from an unbeaten season.

The Concrete Cowboys won the toss and elected to bat first however very few of their players were able to make significant contributions.

Daniel Stephens was dismissed for a duck early on by Jed Noonan, putting the team on the back foot.

Tyler Coughlan (10 runs off nine balls) fought briefly, hitting two boundaries before being dismissed leaving the Cowboys at 2/16.

The middle order showed little resistance with the consistent fall of wickets and the Cowboys had lost seven wickets for 45.

Troy Barrow (40 off 35 balls) provided a brief spark, but the lack of support from the lower order saw the Concrete Cowboys all out for 82, with Barrow being dismissed as the final wicket at 10/82.

The Back Door Bandits bowled brilliantly, with David Watson (3/8) and Mathew Shepherd (1/7) being standouts.

The Bandits’ bowlers consistently stifled the Cowboys throughout the innings.

Other contributions came from Jayden Potts (2/1) and Jed Noonan (1/2), who further restricted the Cowboys’ batting efforts.

The Back Door Bandits chased down the 82-run target effortlessly, reaching 0/83 in 14.2 overs.

Mathew Shepherd played a steady, composed knock, finishing not out on 38 from 49, including four boundaries. He anchored the innings, guiding the chase with patience.

James McClure was the aggressor of the chase, contributing 44 runs from 37 balls.

His batting, although not without some luck, ensured the chase was completed without any stress.

The opening partnership remained unbroken, as the Bandits comfortably reached the target.

The Cowboys’ bowling effort, though steady at times, failed to challenge the Bandits’ openers. Kody Martin (two overs, six runs) and Daniel Stephens (two overs, eight runs) were the pick of the bowlers, maintaining solid economies.

Australia Day ambassador Paul Featherstone presented the Yabbies Veterans team of Bill Fugar, Bob Clark, Scott Toomey and John de Bruin with their Cobar Quids prizes as winners of the Yabbies Business House Handicapped Relay on Sunday. The team swam to within 0.47 seconds of their nominated time. The Maintenance Crew team (Greg Martin, Paul Swainston, Jarrod Marsden and Jason Toomey) were the runners up with 3.87 seconds off their nominated time.

Smith and Daly handled the heat to bag a big bowls win A group of 32 keen bowlers were out early on the Golfie greens on Australia Day in an effort to beat the sweltering weather.

John ‘Shark’ Daly and double lead Bian Smith handled the heat on Sunday with ease and finished as outright winners.

They ended the match with a whopping +16 advantage over Smith and Jason Howell!

For the first 10 ends it appeared everything went Howell’s way until a protest from Shark turned the game around!

It’s not easy being a Double Lead but Smith and Shark went on to win the remaining eight ends.

The runners-up also won by a large margin of +13 with Jim Goonrey, Mick McManus and Ian Prendergast taking the game from their opposition, Jimmy May (Blacktown visitor), Darryl Jermyn and Jay McKeller.

The scorecard card shows that Team Prendy held mat for 14 out of 18 ends!

Team Ooze (David Knight, Rory Dunlop and Alec Fraser) finished the day with a +8 win over Doug Hudson, Daryn Lord and Will Lawton.

Two games ended on +5: Tony Polack and Randall Hall had a win against Mark Fraser and David Thomas while David Schofield, Narelle Kriz and David Kershaw finished as winners against Michael Sargent, Marlene Wynd and Allan Gardoll.

In the other match, Don Roberts, David Bian Smith, Jason Howell, Randall Hall and John Daly were among the big field of Kershaw and Greg Clark had a +4 victory bowlers on the Golfie greens on Australia Day. Daly and Smith (playing double lead) over Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod, Karen Daly and Cole Bunting. finished as the overall winners of the day.

There was another good roll up of 18 players for Friday night’s Twilight Bowls.
