Seems like we’ve skipped spring

Getting the placement right

Members of the Cobar Iron Ringer Committee, Cobar Shire Council staff and local contractors involved in the Iron Ring monument build, last Wednesday met on the site where the monument is to be located (adjacent to the Barrier Highway opposite the Great Cobar Museum). The group determined which direction the Iron Ring would face and the location of the footings and pavers was marked out. As winter comes to an end this week, it’s going to feel like we’ve skipped spring and gone straight into summer with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a very hot 32 degrees for Friday.

That’s six degrees above the average for this time of the year!

And if it gets to 32 degrees, then it will be a new record high August temperature for Cobar, with the previous highest temperature being 31.3 degrees, which was set in 1995 on August 26.

The first day of spring on Sunday is looking more spring-like with the Bureau predicting a sunny day with a top of 25.

The sunny weather continues into Monday with a maximum of 21 expected.

Today’s forecast is for a top of 26 with 23 the expected maximum for tomorrow.

It’s been a warm end to winter with the thermometer hitting 20+ temperatures each day over the past week.

Wednesday’s maximum was 21.5 and Thursday was similar with a top of 21.6.

Friday reached 23.9 degrees before it topped out at 28.9 degrees on Saturday, our warmest day of the week.

Rain late Saturday and throughout Sunday put 1.4mm into the Bureau’s rain gauge with another 0.6mm also recorded up until 9am on Monday morning.

Our overnight temperatures have also warmed up this past week with the Bureau recording a minimum of 15.2 overnight Saturday and it only got down to 16.4 overnight on Sunday, which was our warmest night this month.

It’s the end of the road (rates and rubbish) for councillors Cobar Shire Council’s Ordinary Monthly Meeting on Thursday was a very quick meeting as the council has now gone into caretaker mode.

Councillors are required to go into a caretaker period four weeks preceding the date of the Local Government elections.

During this period routine business should continue however no new significant decisions or contractual commitments can be made.

For Cr Janine Lea-Barrett and Cr Tony Chaplain it was their last council meeting as both did not seek re-election.

Cr Lea-Barrett praised councillors and staff for pursuing a pedestrian crossing across the railway in Bourke Road and said she was also pleased to see the upgrade work happening in the Industrial Area, which were two projects she had been championing in her two terms of council.

Cr Lea-Barrett said she was also proud to have been part of a Council that brought $11.5 million worth of grant funded projects to the shire over the past year.

Cr Tony Chaplain welcomed the six new councillors (one of whom was present in the meeting gallery) and encouraged them to work with the current councillors.

Cr Chaplain said having “a united front” and working harmoniously together had been council’s “secret to success” over the past term.

He also praised Mayor Jarrod Marsden’s “impressive leadership and communication” Cobar Shire Council outgoing councillors Cr Janine Lea-Barrett and Cr Tony Chaplain skills. attended their final Ordinary Council Meeting on Thursday. A work in progress

Crime scene at Tom Knight Oval Police declared the Tom Knight Memorial Oval a crime scene on Saturday after receiving a report of a break, enter and theft from the canteen.

Between 8.30pm on Friday and 12pm on Saturday unknown persons broke into the canteen at the oval.

After gaining access to the main canteen area and the cooler room they stole an estimated $2,500 of various lollies and drinks.

Leading Senior Constable Ryan Chillingworth said a crime scene examination job has been created in an attempt to obtain fingerprints and DNA. LSC Chillingworth said any member of the public with information about the theft is urged to contact police or CrimeStoppers.

Cobar Show Society had a successful annual general meeting last Tuesday night at the Services Club with all positions filled.

Caden Mackay was happy to take on the role of president once again with Corey Traynor and Sue Cox returning to fill the vice president roles.

Rebecca Howard and Bianca Lane also will continue in their roles of secretary and treasurer respectively.

Taking on pavilion roles were: Paul Evans— Wool; Michael Evans—Sheep; Simonne Mackay—Main Pavilion; Neville Fugar—Poultry; Kate Evans—Cattle and Rebecca Everett will head up the Horse section.

Secretary Rebecca Howard reports they also welcomed some new members to the general committee.

“The Cobar Show Society is looking forward to planning the 2025 Cobar Show and sharing the journey with our community,” Rebecca said.

Rural health report handed down The Select Committee on Regional Rural and Remote Health report was recently handed down in NSW Parliament.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler said the report had some good news.

“Chaired by my good friend and colleague Dr Joe McGirr, the Member for Wagga Wagga, that select committee was set up last year by the current government for the purpose of looking into the progress of the implementation of the 44 recommendations of the 2022 report by Inquiry into Health Outcomes and Access to Health and Hospital services in Rural, Regional and Remote New South Wales,” Mr Butler explained.

“The recommendations, none of them unreasonable, if implemented would go a long way toward reversing the decline of the regional health system.”

Mr Butler said there has been some progress made in areas such as incentive programs to recruit new health staff and an increase in regional paramedics.

“But there is still a long way to go,” he said.

“There is still an acute shortage of GPs in country areas, for instance.

“In the second August sitting week, I delivered a Private Members Statement talking about the report and said that we need to make faster progress to bring country health care back to some kind of parity with that available to city dwellers.”

After experiencing French frivolities and the Olympic dreams of last month’s meeting, VIEW Club ladies were brought back to reality with guest speakers providing aged care services information at their August meeting last week.

VIEW president Enid English welcomed independent NDIS and aged care workers, Michelle Gillette and Victoria Taufao, together with Kara O’Hara who is employed by the Kirinari organization, to the meeting.

Michelle spoke about the services available through the Cobar group of independent support workers, that encompasses physical, social and general support.

Kara explained her role as a care finder enables her to navigate through the paperwork pathways in order to obtain the appropriate care and assistance for clients.

She covers a large area of west and north NSW and illustrated her talk with examples of assistance delivered to clients.

Members showed their appreciation of the useful information the ladies supplied with a round of applause.

General business included discussion around the upcoming preloved clothing sale, the museum outing and Oaks Day event.

The meeting concluded with a presentation of significant birthday flowers to president Enid and an enjoyable meal prepared by Cindy Bryan and her kitchen staff.— contributed

Driver fined for an unregistered car Cobar Police issued a traffic infringement to an 81 year old man on Saturday night after he was detected driving an unregistered motor vehicle.

The driver was stopped by police in Marshall Street at around 9pm and a random breath test was conducted.

The male driver returned a negative result but investigations found that his vehicle was unregistered.

Cobar Commonwealth branch joins Share the Dignity drive The Cobar Commonwealth Bank Branch has joined the #dignitydrive campaign, setting up a collection point for period products for women and girls who menstruate.

Menstruating isn’t a choice but those experiencing period poverty often have to choose between purchasing period products or other essential items just to get by.

They shouldn’t have to choose and that’s where the Share the Dignity initiative can help.

Australian not-for-profit organisation Share the Dignity has been providing those experiencing homelessness, domestic violence or poverty with period products since early 2015.

Monique Stevens, Branch Manager of Commonwealth Bank Cobar said they were thrilled to be supporting Share the Dignity and their 2024 August Dignity Drive.

“We are hoping to collect 100 unopened packets of period products during the campaign to donate to those in need,” Monique said.

Cobar is just one of many Commonwealth Bank Branches in the Greater North West Area that is supporting the initiative.

“If you’d like to donate, next time you are doing your shopping, keep in mind: one box for me, one box for them, then simply drop off your donation at your nearest Commonwealth Bank branch or local collection point,” Monique suggested.

Cobar High School Year 9 and 10 students were joined by Nyngan High School students for a job readiness workshop at the school recently.

The EDGE workshop concept was developed in 2013 by former careers advisor Sharna Dawson to bridge the gap she had noticed between student participation and employers’ expectations.

During the face-to-face, engaging and interactive workshop held at Cobar High, students had the opportunity to explore and discuss presentation, attitude, hygiene and communication skills—all of which can help young job applicants in the hiring process.

As part of the workshop, students met with representatives from local employers, Cobar Shire Council, Essential Energy, NSW Health, Aeris Resources and The Cobar Weekly to hear what they were after in a young employee.

The importance of attendance and the consequences of non-attendance, greeting people with a handshake, the value of networking and good communication skills were all covered in group discussions.

The representatives also shared their personal hiring and employment experiences with the students.

In addition to offering students unbiased careers advice, the workshop also gave them access to a group of professionals that worked with students on their grooming (including hair, clothes, skincare and makeup).

Sharna said the EDGE workshops aim to impart job-ready skills and confidence to students no matter their location or socioeconomic status.

“Having a program like our’s supported with funding from RIEP (Regional Industry Education Partnerships) allows us to bring our hands-on job ready workshops to the regions.

“We believe whatever programs happen on the coast should be delivered to all regions,” Sharna told The Cobar Weekly.

“We absolutely loved the day, and loved being with the 55 Cobar and Nyngan students.

“When we travel regionally, we are always blown away in particular with the manners, the level of co-operation and pure engagement from start to finish.”

The Minis match up between Pitch Pirates and Orange Rovers ended in a 4-nil victory for Pitch Pirates.

Mason Hill scored twice and Archer Fugar and Nixon Shields kicked their other goals.

The other Minis game resulted in Raging Rhinos getting the better of Purple Wanderers to win 5-2.

Noah Seymour booted four goals and Jack Joss netted one for Raging Rhinos while Oliver Tranter and Colt Evans each found the back of the net for Purple Wanderers.

End of season presentations followed with Brianna Watson (Smash Ups) earning the Best & Fairest award (for the second season running); Bridgette Negfeldt collected the Sportsmanship award and Mary Urquhart won the Larnie Keen Club Person of the Year award.

• The Cobar Roosters Under 18s team created club history when they won the 2019 Castlereagh Youth League grand final. It was just the club’s second year playing in the Castlereagh competition. They beat the Coonamble Bears 30-28 in a nail-biting thriller.

Roosters will be hard to beat

The Cobar Roosters Under 18s will host Gulgong for the Castlereagh Youth League grand final on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

On paper, the Cobar side, who finished as the minor premiers this season, will be hard to beat. They have only recorded one loss this season and that was to Gulgong way back in Round 2.

Over the course of the 2024 season Cobar has beaten Gulgong four out of the five times they have met, including winning the major semi final, 28-12, two weeks ago.

The Roosters Under 18s have an impressive try scoring record in 2024 with a tally of 60 tries for the season.

Reece Josephson, who joined the team in the second half of the competition, was responsible for 13 tries and Kai Taylor had a tally of 10 tries this season.

The team has 13 players who have contributed to their big try tally and, on average, they’ve had four or more different players score tries each game.

Coach Paul Sullivan said while some weeks it was a struggle to round up enough players to field a full side, that won’t be the case on grand final day.

The team has regularly relied on three Under 16s players this season to help make up numbers including Jaxon Burke, Aiden Swan and Tim Eves (when it didn’t clash with their Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League commitments).

Coach Sullivan said Burke and Swan will be named in the run-on side while Eves will also make a contribution coming off the bench.

Sullivan is also spoilt for choice as to who will get the team’s kicking duties on Saturday with five players having proven themselves more than capable in that area including Josephson, Tadgh McMullen, Tommy Bryan, Oisin McMullen and Zane Jenner (from Coonabarabran, who is awaiting clearance).

One key player, Kai Taylor is however under an injury cloud, and Sullivan is hoping he’ll pass his fitness test on Saturday morning.

Sullivan rates his team’s chances of winning the premiership as very good.

“If they play to their strengths they’ll win.

“They don’t need luck or anything else if they all commit.

“They can win if everybody shares the workload. It’s going to be hot and they need to complete their sets and put their focus on the middle of the field.

“They need to hold on to the ball for the full set and force errors to open up opportunities.

“Gulgong has a big pack of forwards, they complete their sets of six, and they have a fast halfback we need to watch.”

As well as being excited, Sullivan said he’s also nervous about Saturday’s grand final.

“The kids are so lucky to have this opportunity to play a home grand final in front of a big home crowd, but that also brings a lot of pressure to do well with it.

“And playing footy in spring is completely different to playing footy in winter, it’s going to be great.”

Sullivan said while he’s played in eight grand finals in his playing career, none of those were in front of a home crowd.

“I’m so proud of these kids and how much some of them have developed and matured over the season. They just need to ‘be the pig’ and be committed.”

A legacy to Larnie

Cobar Netball Association president Mary Urquhart (second from left) was named this year’s Larnie Keen Club Person of the Year for her hard work and dedication to both senior and junior netball this season. Mary was presented with her award on Friday night by fellow umpire and great friend of Larnie’s, Sherrin Wharton, along with Larnie’s granddaughter Indirose Saunders and husband Kevin Keen. Larnie was a much loved and respected former player and umpire who volunteered many years of service to netball in Cobar.
