The future of Cobar Show’s Young Woman competition is looking bright with the number of junior entries for this year’s competition up on last year. The competition gives girls and women the opportunity to become an ambassador for their local community. This year’s 14 entrants are pictured above with competition coordinator Susan Singleton and official guests UK Deputy Consul General Ed Kitt and State Member for Barwon Roy Butler, who had the honour of opening this year’s show. Jasmine Beddows was named Cobar’s 2025 Young Woman, the Teen winner was Michaela Tonnissen (with Isla McKervey the runner-up) and the Junior winner was Eden Cavalot (with Grace Mackay the runner-up).

Honour for Boucher family

The Cobar Show Society committee unveiled a new name for the Main Pavillion at this year’s Cobar Show. Kept a secret until the unveiling on Friday night, the Boucher Pavilion has been dedicated to two generations of the Boucher family who have voluntarily contributed countless hours helping out with Cobar Shows. Stage 1 of Cobar Shire Council’s Industrial Estate Road and Storm Water Upgrade project is nearing completion.

The project included the upgrade of Old Bourke Road between the Barrier Highway and Campbell Street and the full length of Campbell Street between Old Bourke Road and Dunstan Street.

Work included upgrading the existing swale drains to increase their capacity and reduce the impacts of localised flooding along with upgrading roads to accommodate oversized vehicles and the installation of new asphalt.

Council’s director of engineering services, Amer Tawfik, presented an update on the project to last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

Mr Tawfik reported the encasing of the stormwater pipes has been completed along with associated kerb and channel work.

Road basecourse material has been laid along with a road primer seal (to protect roads from rain damage).

Mr Tawfik said some finishing and tidying up work has yet to be completed and the laying of the asphalt permanent seal is scheduled to take place next week.

Cr Bob Sinclair and Cr Michael Prince spoke on the matter with both concerned “about the level of gutters compared to the bitumen” with a discrepancy of about four inches.

Mr Tawfik explained that when the final asphalt seal is laid, the road should then be flush with the cap.

Mr Butler said it was a very productive meeting.

“We have a firm plan to address the trails in order of priority.

“Trails 2, 5, and 16 have been confirmed as correctly plotted on the map, and this is where we want the work to begin,” he said.

“Part of the discussion was around the definition of fire trails and fire breaks, and a preference for the use of fire breaks was decided because of the unique way the Mallee burns.

“I will take this up with Minister Jihad Dib from an emergency services perspective,” Mr Butler said.

Tagging along with Mr Butler for his five day western area visit last week was UK Deputy Consul General, Ed Kitt.

“We took the opportunity to take Ed out because a third of NSW resides in regional areas, and Ed had a desire to better understand our regional communities,” Mr Butler said.

Passion and commitment for Cobar Show is still strong

This year’s Most Successful Exhibitor, Eva Halliger, with one of her winning floral displays in the Main Pavilion.

Reckless wounding Following police investigations, a 35-yearold Cobar man was arrested and charged with reckless wounding and common assault on Friday.

The arrest was made following an incident at a residence in Fletcher Street the night before.

Police were informed that a 23-year-old male had been admitted to Cobar Hospital on Thursday night for treatment to a leg wound and was released from hospital a few hours later.

The 35-year-old was granted conditional bail and is to appear at Cobar Local Court in July.

It’s believed the two males were not known to each other.

Detectives are investigating the matter.

Any witnesses to the incident are urged to contact Cobar Police.

A brush with fame Great Cobar Museum staff had a brush with fame last year when an SBS television episode of “Who do you think you are?” was filmed in Cobar.

“Who do you think you are?” is an Australian television documentary reality genealogy series with each episode profiling a celebrity tracing their family tree.

Australian actor and writer, Patrick Brammall was the subject of a Season 16 episode which recently aired with a segment of the episode filmed at Cobar’s museum.

Brammall is best known for his roles as Sean Moody in ABC comedy A Moody Christmas, as Leo Taylor in Channel 10’s Offspring, as Sergeant James Hayes in ABC’s Glitch and was the co-creator, co-writer and co-star in the comedy series Colin from Accounts.

Brammall also voiced Radley (Bandit and Stripe’s brother) in Bluey.

Museum curator Kay Stingemore said one of Brammall’s ancestors lived in Cobar in the early 1900s and was a significant figure in the community.

“I helped with the research and explained the story to Patrick.

“The whole thing is a really interesting story and Patrick Brammall has a great take on the importance of history and family,” Kay said.

“It was filmed last winter, mostly in the museum courtyard but, of course, we weren’t allowed to talk about it or disclose the subject.

“It was good fun to do, and having spent a day in his company, I can say that Patrick Brammall is a lovely man as well as being a great actor.”

Cuppa for a cure

Barb Barklimore, Norm Davis, Marlene Wynd, Nicki Smith, Belinda Walkley and Ev Hyde at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club’s Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday. The event raised over $1,000 for the Cancer Council and included a very generous donation from Norm. Norm and his late wife Dianne have both been beneficiaries of the Cancer Council. Dianne battled cancer for 17 years before she passed away last year and Norm was diagnosed with cancer two and a half years ago. Norm is hoping to hear he’s in remission when he next visits his doctor in August.

Women invited to a “sundowner”

Women working in or supporting the mining, energy and resources sectors in the Cobar region are invited to attend a “sundowner’ event tomorrow.

Hosted by WISER (Women in Sustainable Energy & Resources), the Cobar Sundowner is a casual, end of day social event, where attendees can relax, network and enjoy a drink and conversation in a welcoming environment.

One of WISER’s priorities is to ensure that regional and remotely-based women have access to their offering.

Joanne Feltham, Commercial Superintendent – Cobar Region for Aurelia Metals Ltd, is a WISER member based in Queensland.

Aurelia Metals and UTM Global jumped on board to support the event for women in the region with tomorrow’s sundowner to be WISERS first planned event.

Two guest speakers have been lined up for the event including WIMARQ award winner Bobbi Hart who will speak on the theme “Women are more than just their job titles” and WISER Chair Joanne Bergamin, who will speak about the WISER movement.

“I’m excited to support and see where this will take us and the women in Cobar. It makes so much sense having these events in strong mining regions,” Ms Bergamin said.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 7.6mm of rain in Cobar over the past week but luckily it fell either side of this year’s Cobar Show.

A total of 1.2mm of rain was recorded on Thursday and Friday while much heavier falls throughout the day on Monday resulted in another 6.4mm in our gauges up to 9am yesterday.

While the week ahead should be mostly sunny, there’s a chance we could see some more rain on Sunday and Monday with the Bureau predicting a high chance of showers on both days.

After cool days today (a top of 17 degrees is expected) and tomorrow (16 degrees), the Bureau is predicting it will be sunny on Friday and warm up to a maximum of 20 degrees.

The predicted top for Saturday is 21 degrees and up to 5mm of rain and.

It should still be mild on Sunday with a top of 21 also predicted.

It will drop slightly to a top of 18 degrees for the start of the working week on Monday.

Last week the Bureau didn’t record much of a difference in our highest and lowest temperatures on Thursday (which was our coolest day of the week).

After an overnight low of 11.8 degrees, it only warmed up to a maximum of 15.1 degrees during the day.

We experienced our warmest day on Saturday when it reached a high of 20.8 degrees (after a very cool overnight low of 6.1 degrees, which was our coldest morning of the week).

A new way to walk

Local contractors are currently working to create new footpaths around the town as part of Cobar Shire Council’s Active Transport program. The program was developed in 2019 to improve community infrastructure and promote more active modes of transport such as walking and riding. This section on the southern side of Woodiwiss Avenue in front of the golf course is part of a 760m section of footpath that connects Blakey Street to Tindera Street. More new footpaths are currently under construction in Louth Road from Becker Street to Bradley Street and in Bathurst Street from Marshall Street to Mopone Street.

Michael explained wool is judged based on a points score system.

“It’s judged both as the fleece in front of the judge and as its potential to become fabric and a garment,” Michael explained.

Judges look at different criteria including length, soundness, colour, softness and evenness (along with five other criteria) with each section awarded a mark out of 10.

The fleece weight and yield percentage (the amount of that fleece that’s actually wool other than vegetable matter, lanolin, dirt etc) are calculated into the final score.

“All Ag shows judge this way,” Michael said.

“When you get to big sheep shows each sheep has a wool sample taken and is laser scanned so there is an exact current wool test to help with judging.”

In the Sheep section entries were down this David Betts’ fleece entries from Bedooba featured in the winner’s list in the Wool Section year on previous years. at this year’s Cobar Show.

Michael said some of the regular show exhibitors were unable to exhibit due to it being a very dry season.

There’s more to poultry judging than most people think It’s been another successful year at Cobar Show for poultry breeder David Cleasby from Warren who once again took out the top gong in the Poultry division.

Cleasby owned Cobar Show’s 2025 Poultry Grand Champion (Pekin) and also the Reserve Champion (Langshan) Bird of Show.

He also took out prizes for the Poultry Champion Soft Feather Bird (large), the Reserve Champion Soft Feather (large) and had the Champion Soft feather Bantam.

Les Wiley won the Poultry Champion and Reserve Champion titles in the Hard Feather Bantam section, had the Champion and Reserve Champion Soft Feather Bantam and owned the Hard Feather (large) Reserve Champion.

Tom McBride won the Poultry Champion Hard Feather (large) section.

Ashton Campbell was the Junior Champion and JuniorReserve Champion in this year’s Poultry section.

Poultry Chief Steward and Cobar Show Society Life Member, Neville Fugar reports there were 114 birds entered in this year’s show with 61 of those exhibited being from out of town.

Neville said all of the entries in this year’s poultry competition were of good quality and were on par with the competition for last year’s event.

He said when it comes down to the nitty gritty, the judge may have to make their decision on one fine detail to find a winner.

Neville said David’s birds were very well bred and are always presented in the best of condition.

He said it was a bit tricky for breeders to be able to present quality birds at this time of the year.

“Most birds are going through a molt so they’re not fully feathered.

“Some birds will get a bit lucky.

“They’ll molt early and they’ll stand out a lot more. That’s when you will see them at their best.”

Neville said there’s no one “common variety” of bird being exhibited at the show.

“It varies from year to year,” he said.

Phillips claims the win on a countback

A busy week of golf last week started with a Stableford game for the ladies on Wednesday with Sue Phillips surviving a countback from Geraldine Francisco for the win.

Both ladies scored 38 points and also picked up Nearest the Pin prizes on the 7th hole along with Fay Hardwick.

In third place was Pat Polack on 36 points and Reina Cross finished with 34.

The Cobar pennants team played host to Forbes on Friday.

Cobar won four of the five games with their only loss happening on the 19th hole.

Saturday’s sponsored Cobar Miners Race Club Three-Ball-Best-Ball Stableford was won by Susan Goonrey, Geraldine Francisco and Sally Bannister with a team score of 48 points.

Karen Manns, Robynne Morton and Wan Sipatsa (with 46 points) were the runnersup and in third place were Fran Samios, Glenda Peebles and Sue Phillips with 44 points.

The individual game played in conjunction had Glenda Peebles on 38 points, Barb Barklimore (36), Wan Sipatsa and Sally Bannister (35 points each) and Marlene Wynd with 33 points.

Closest to the flag on the 8th hole were Sally Bannister, Barb Barklimore and Sue Phillips.

The annual Vets Mabel McKenzie Brooch Stroke event was played on Sunday with a competition game also played in conjunction.

The Vets winners were: Division 1— Narelle Kriz with 72 nett, Division 2—Fran Samios (70 nett), Division 3—Ann Dunn (70 nett) and Senior Vet Susan Goonrey with 74 nett.

Fran Samios won the individual comp on a countback from Ann Dunn after both had 70 nett.

Next was Narelle Kriz (72 nett) followed

by Robynne Morton on 73 nett.

Kriz, Goonrey and Dunn were all closest to the flag on the 11th hole.

Dunn was also the best on the greens with 24 putts.

Today a Par game will be played with a Stableford scheduled for Saturday.

The annual Marie McManus Memorial Day Stableford will be played on Sunday.

Roosters juniors are showing plenty of improvement Cobar Junior Rugby League Club hosted Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League Cobar’s Under 10s, Under 11s and Under Dubbo St John’s teams for Round 4 of the competition on Saturday.

12s teams all played St John’s Gold sides in uncontested games while the Under 16s took on St John’s Blue.

Cobar’s award winners in the Under 10s game were Aisea Fakahua who collected the Sportsmanship award and Lenny Hill earned the Subway Coaches Award.

Coach Andrew Hill said the team had displayed lots improvement in many areas.

“It’s so good to see them have fun, be super competitive and play hard while working on making us a better team,” Coach Hill said.

“We all agree that if we stay positive with each other, we play better, enjoy footy more and help our team.

“There’s still plenty to work on to keep getting better but we’re getting there,” he said.

In their Under 11s game, Jax Claus and Zalyn Manning collected the team awards.

Cobar’s Under 12s put in a very consistent effort and showed plenty of resilience in defence.

Their Players’ Player was Corey Cleary and the Coaches Award earned by Billy Watt.

The Roosters Under 16s came up against a formidable St John’s Blue opposition and were beaten 68-4. Jackson Muldoon was Cobar’s lone try scorer.

Jackson also collected the Players’ Player and Coaches Awards.

In the Mini League competition played on Sunday morning, Mason Hill, Sione Fakahua, Cobar Roosters Mini League Under 8s teams after their game on Sunday morning at Michael Arnold and Nicholas Stylianos colTom Knight Memorial Oval. lected the Under 8s Coaches Awards.

Second place went to Michael Bannister who’s making the best of his 19 handicap.

Third place was John Carlaw who beat the “Super Vet”, Max Phillips on a countback with both players scoring 36 points.

Nearest the Pin shots were recorded by Bill Fugar on the 3rd and 7th holes and Garry Wilkin on the 8th.
