Participants were blown away by the warm welcome at the end of their final, and longest, leg of the Tour de OROC from Bourke to Cobar on Saturday. The charity ride raises money for Macquarie Home Stay, a facility much appreciated by the Cobar community.

Local business owner Trudy Griffiths once again took part in this year’s ride. Trudy was joined by locals Isaac Theakston, Greg McKervey and Parker Cryer for the final stretch of the ride. See page 4 for our report on the ride, and the success of her fundraising.

Coulton bows out

Shave for a Cure targets smashed

Cobar High School’s Shave for a Cure has raised an amazing $5875 for the Leukemia Foundation. This was easily more than the targets necessary to get Colby Lawrence to shave off his beard, Sarah Nicholson to cut off her long hair, and Andrew Coffey to shave his head and beard. Eight volunteers had their heads shaved, including the Principal Shane Carter. This year’s event also resulted in the donation of hair to Wigs4Kids. The joint venture event was suggested by Deputy Principal Amie Hill, who was keen to donate her long locks and thought others at the school might like to get involved. “We ended up with four bundles of hair which we are going to send away to Wigs4Kids, cut from Malcolm Gillette, Sarah Nicholson, Taneesha Anderson and me,” she said. “We are very grateful for the community spirit as it was a very positive day for Cobar High School and we will probably do more community events like this in the future.” Photo contributed

The Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton will not contest the next election.

“It has been an incredible honour to represent the people of the Parkes electorate for more than 16 years, but the time has come for me to step aside,” he said.

“I’ve spent the past 16 years travelling hundreds of thousands of kilometres across my electorate, getting to know the strong and vibrant communities I represent.

“It has been a great privilege and I’m extremely proud of everything we’ve been able to achieve over that time.

“But it’s time for a fresh face to take up the baton and I’m looking forward to the members of The Nationals in the Parkes electorate finding a suitable replacement who can continue to provide strong representation in Canberra.

“In the meantime, I will continue to proudly represent this wonderful electorate with the utmost enthusiasm until the next election.”

The latest date for this is September 2025, with speculation it may be earlier.

Nationals Leader David Littleproud commended Mr Coulton on his service.

“It is no easy feat to serve in Parliament for 16 years, but Mark has served with the utmost integrity and has been a trusted source of advice and guidance to those around him,” Mr Littleproud said.

“He has fought for better regional services and has served in the Ministry in Regional Health, Regional Communication and Local Government, as well as Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism, and Investment.

“Mark has covered his 393,413 square kilometre electorate with dedication, having also been the former Mayor of Gwydir Shire Council.”

No fluoride in Empire Hotel goes on the market water for five years Following a directive from NSW Health to a number of outback councils, Cobar Shire Council is notifying residents that its water supply hasn’t been fluoridated since 2019.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said the new plant was built with the capacity to add fluoride to our drinking water, however this capacity has never been utilized since it came into operation almost five years ago.

“Commissioning of the new fluoride dosing plant was delayed by Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water for various reasons including training of staff and impacts of COVID,” Mr Vlatko said.

“There is now a requirement that councils tell residents within six months if there is no fluoride in the water, so we are complying with that.”

He said Council is working towards training staff and getting the fluoride dosing plant commissioned.

As ever, he recommends using a good toothpaste to apply fluoride to the teeth daily.

“It was very emotional and then to ride round to the community centre to have all those people welcome us was just mind blowing.”

“We don’t get a welcome like that anywhere else, so it was a really big deal to come into town with that sort of welcome,” said Trudy.

The strength of the welcome and funds raised locally reflects the fact that as a town Cobar is the highest user of Macquarie Home Stay, and one in five people who go there come from the Cobar district.

Trudy was one of 34 riders who participated in the event, 20 for the whole distance and others like her for part of the time.

She’s highly motivated to raise funds for, and raise awareness of, the Macquarie Home Stay service.

“It’s my second time and absolutely I would do it again,” she said.

While Trudy hasn’t used the Macquarie Home Stay service herself, she definitely sees the need for it.

“No one should be sick in Dubbo and have to pay accommodation,” she said.

“It’s expensive, and it’s not a home environment.

“The Home Stay people are also wonderful at linking you up with services that you might be eligible for to help it be a little easier.”

Three other locals – Isaac Theakston, Greg McKervey and Parker Cryer – joined the ride 80km out from Cobar, and Trudy is hopeful of them riding with her for a longer time in the 2026 Tour.

Gordon said that the Cobar Rotary Club has been a strong supporter of the Tour since its inception, in recognition of the great work that the Home Stay does in supporting Cobar and Call in for a district residents who need to travel to and stay in Dubbo for medical treatment.

Riverina Outback Rally raises $600k for Country Hope As the Riverina Outback Rally arrived in Cobar for lunch last Thursday, news broke that this year’s fundraiser for the Riverina-based Country Hope had cracked the $600,000 mark.

Founder and Rally Director Gavin Gilbert said that since its inception eight years ago, the Rally has raised $3.7m for the familycentred support organisation for children diagnosed with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. It operates throughout Wagga Wagga, Albury/Wodonga, Griffith, Dubbo and surrounding areas.

“We support Country Hope because you actually see what they do to help families in and out of our area,” he said.

“They don’t get any government funding, so we raise funds for them.

“100% of what we raise goes to them not back into the rally administration.”

This year the rally for 2WD vehicles travelling from Darlington Point to Grong Grong – around 3000km over five days.

Brothers Kari and Brendan Sattler have done the rally seven times, and plan to keep on returning.

“We love raising money for Country Hope as its focus is on helping the families, who still have bills to pay and need other support,” said Kari.

Looking for housing solutions The Member for Barwon Roy Butler has moved a notice of motion in the NSW Parliament, looking for solutions to the housing crisis on a number of fronts.

These include creating more housing for essential workers to attract more teachers, nurses, doctors and police to the regions; freeing up Crown Land to the private maket to increase residential supply; encouraging vocational training and apprenticeships as part of the housing renewal; and simplifying planning approvals.

The latter would include approving the use of efficient, fast construction methods such as locally made panelised or modular homes.

Our Locum Editor talks local papers at VIEW Club VIEW Club ladies welcomed Cathy Law as a guest speaker at their belated St Patrick’s Day luncheon last Tuesday.

Cathy, who is Locum Editor for this edition of The Cobar Weekly, shared snippets of her early life in Mt Isa and career in the world of journalism and commerce, including owning and running a café in Kiama and then founding The Bugle newspaper there.

Since selling that paper, Cathy has been offering her services to small town newspaper editors in need of a much deserved break.

She sees it as a great way to utilize her skills whilst soaking up local knowledge and new experiences with husband Steve.

She spoke of the importance of the continuance of independent local newspapers, as these papers look after the interests of the community by providing truthful, reliable information.

However, she reminded members that their viability is reliant on local advertising and community input.

Cathy’s interesting, informative and relaxed presentation sparked a lively discussion and was appreciated by all in attendance.

Club business covered the upcoming preloved clothing and accessories fundraising sale and Mother’s Day raffles.

Prue collected the lucky door prize and Kate scored the raffle.

Possible rain over Easter The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting Cobar may receive some rainfall over the Easter long weekend with showers predicted for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

According to the Bureau, up to 1mm of rain is expected on Easter Saturday with a top temperature of 28 degrees.

Showers of up to 9mm are predicted for Easter Sunday and a top temperature of 24.

The rain is expected to ease to up to 1mm on Easter Monday, with a top temperature of 26 degrees.

Today, tomorrow and Good Friday are all expected to be warm and sunny with 31 degrees the forecast for each day.

The rainfall in Cobar last week was recorded by the Bureau as a total of 31.6mm (10.6mm on Wednesday, 15mm on Saturday and 6mm on Sunday) Some landholders had significantly more rainfall with Jennifer Barton reporting 50.8mm for the week at Meralda station, just west of Cobar.

Mild temperatures were recorded over the past week with 23.2 degrees the maximum last Wednesday, Thursday was 27.8 degrees and Friday topped out at 31.8.

Saturday was our coolest day last week when the mercury only reached 20 degrees.

Sunday’s maximum was 26.3 degrees while Monday reached 27.5 degrees.

Deficit worsens

The bottom line of Cobar Shire Council’s Draft Budget, expected to be put on public exhibition at tomorrow’s March Meeting, shows a deficit of $2.2 million.

Despite this being a substantial worsening of the situation, Council is not looking to increase rates above the rate pegging or cut services despite big increases in costs.

“At this stage Council has not considered increasing the rates because the percentage rise needed to pay for the additional $3 million in extra costs we have experienced over the last two years would be ridiculous,” said General Manager Peter Vlatko. Council’s rate income is currently $4.6 million.

Depreciation of $7.8 million plays a large part in the final figure, despite the assets involved being largely grant funded.

“There is no other council of our size that can afford that,” said Mr Vlatko.

“If you look at it from a purely accounting point of view, then the sustainability of our council and others is hard to predict.”

Running costs have also increased substantially, particularly the operation of the Lilliane Brady Village, with services such as the library, pool and community centre all running at significant losses.

“We’re not concerned about the deficit in the short term but we have identified that the Council will need to sit down and review its service levels and review its future in terms of understanding where this is going,” said Mr Vlatko.

“We are having a public meeting in April for the community to come and listen and understand what’s in the budget and how it’s going to affect them.”

Councillors will also be asked to adopt the draft master plan and business case for the redevelopment of Cobar Town Hall; and to note details of all of the land and housing in the town owned by Council for inclusion in a dedicated housing and investment portfolio. Producer workshops hit the spot

Nutrien Russell’s Producer Workshop event attracted over forty attendees last Tuesday. The event showcased a range of industry products and delivered information to producers on key industry issues. The event hosted representatives from Allflex, Datamars, Star Pump, Austral Wire and Nutrien, and covered topics including EID technology for livestock, solar water pumps, animal nutrition, trade account finance, fencing and EID software and hardware. “The event was a huge success and we received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees,” said Nutrien Russell’s Emily Mosely. “Producers enjoyed hearing from a range of industry experts about a breadth of relevant topics.” Photo contributed

At 1.9 kilometers deep, CSA is the second deepest copper mine in Australia and the third highest copper grade in the world. Swimming Club’s annual award night marks end of era Cobar Swimming Club held end of season presentations on Sunday night at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.

Cobar Swimming Club President Tanya Hodges reports the night was well attended by members and their families.

It was also a bit of a sad occasion with news of numerous long serving committee members stepping down from their roles to focus on other ventures next season.

The Club celebrated their Pointscore winners and Age Champions before the presentation of seven perpetual awards.

The Norm Higgins Overall Most Improved Trophy, presented by Shirley Fisher, was awarded to Henry Knight.

Taylah Wyllie earned the Brian Howell Achievers Shield (presented by Jason Howell).

The Bunyan Family Senior Club Person award (presented by Georgie Baker) went to Ashlee Compton.

Josh Gillette received The Colleen Martin Junior Achiever award (presented by Margaret Rendall).

In individual championship events: Dave Mexted – first ex-serviceman 35-39 years; Owen Small – first 45-49 years; Grant McDonald – second 35-39 years; Stuart Small – second 50-54 years; Bill Fugar – third 65-69 years; Bob Clark – third 75-79 years; Murray Harland – fourth 55-59 years; and Matt Harland – fifth 30-34 years.

After sizing up the competition Kevin Mitchell is keen to have a crack at the 80-84 years age group next year.

In the local pool last week, last season’s club champion, Murray Harland, seemed to have started to regain his previous good form and finished with a first place in the 30m, second in the 50m and third in the 100m handicapped freestyle events.

Harland won the 30m swim with a time of 0.09 seconds off his nominated time with late bloomer Greg Dimond in second with 0.12 seconds and Bill Fugar finished third on 0.35.

Todd Fugar took line honours in the 100m swim with 0.50 seconds off his time with John Carswell second (0.66) and Murray Harland coming in third (0.69).

Swainston teamed up with Shane Josephson to win the Brace Relay novelty event with 0.83 seconds off their time ahead of Dimond and Murray Harland (1.00) with Carswell and Bill Fugar back in third.

First Fast5 Super Shots

The two new teams in the Fast5 netball competition played against the established teams last week, with both losing in their Round 2 games.

Despite Peak Gold Bars having the advantage of 14 players for subs, Rusty Snails with their six players defeated them 30-18 in a very end to end game. It was a very gritty win for the Snails.

The result in the game between last year’s premiers, Mixed & Matched, and the new team of Lilliane Brady co-workers, the Lillies, was a clearcut win to the more experienced team, 39-25.

The scores included Super Shots from both teams. M&M’s Lauren Urquhart scored the first Super Shot (worth 3 points) for the season in the second quarter. Stevie Toomey did one better scoring a Super Shot in the Lillies Powerplay in the third quarter (6 points), the season’s first Powerplay Super Shot.

The round’s Favourite Fivers (best player as determined by the opposition) were Megan Guirin (Snails), Peta Hill (Peak), Graham Manuai (Lillies) and Lauren Urquhart (M&M).
