The Cobar RSL Sub Branch’s 2023 Anzac Day services marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the war in Vietnam and also the 100th anniversary of Legacy. Special guests this year included Naval Commander Nick Zillman who gave the commemorative address and three members from the Riverina Light Horse Troop who had the honour of leading the march. Some of their gear is original, such as their 1916 saddles and standard issue 1914 WWI 303 rifles, while other items are replicated.

Among a Light Horseman’s gear were two bandoliers of 90 rounds of ammunition (one worn by the rider and the other around the horse’s neck), plus another 50 rounds worn on a belt by the rider.

Among their items, they would also have a bed roll with a spare blanket (and maybe a spare shirt) and waterproof under sheet (that could double as a body bag), a great coat rolled up at the back, a haversack with a tin cup and cooking gear, spare horseshoes and nails, a curry comb to groom the horse, the horse’s nosebag and canvas waterbag, a water bottle, a change of underwear and sewing kit along with any personal possessions such as tobacco and family photos etc the rider had.

Mick said horse maintenance was very important and any soldier found not looking after his horse could be put on a charge.

“We are very grateful to the generous public who donate good quality, pre-loved items for us to sell in the retail shop.

“Our customers continue to support the Vinnies shop, and enjoy coming in to find a treasure, or to find designer items at a bargain price.

“We need them to continue supporting the shop to ensure the longevity of Vinnies in Cobar. All proceeds from the sale of donated items stay in the local community and provide a substantial source of funding needed to run our local programs and services to assist people experiencing disadvantage.”

Vinnies volunteers help to bring a little dignity, comfort and hope to those who need it most and Ms Godden said it’s for these people, that their volunteers really do make a difference.

Sound Chapel short-listed for a heritage award

Cobar’s Sound Chapel has been shortlisted among 40 rich and diverse heritage projects across NSW for the 29th annual National Trust Awards.

The National Trust Heritage Awards is an annual celebration of outstanding practice, awarding excellence in conservation of Aboriginal, built, natural or cultural heritage.

Cobar’s Sound Chapel, by Glenn Murcutt in collaboration with Georges Lentz, has been nominated in the Adaptive Re-Use category which has been short-listed to five projects.

Matthew Devine, Chair of the National Trust Heritage Awards Jury said the diversity, scale and geographical representation this year was “simply astounding” and had prompted “rich and robust discussions between the judges”.

Each singer/song writer is a successful country music artist in their own right.

Adam has half a million album sales, Gold and Platinum albums, nine Golden Guitar awards and a CMA Country Music Artist award.

Beccy has notched up 11 Golden Guitar awards (including five female Artist of the Year awards), has had multiple ARIA Top 10 Country and Top 40 Mainstream albums, a Top 10 DVD, three Gold-certified releases, and more than a dozen #1 Australian Country singles.

The singer-songwriter was also awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) last year which Beccy said was “incredible”.

The pair, which Adam describes as having a close friendship, have toured together numerous times.

Adam credits his early interest in country music as being “brainwashed” into him by his father.

“Dad always had it playing in the house and he was a bit of an expert on country music and he’d tell me stories about this singer and that singer and when they had this hit and what year that was.”

But Adam said it was his aunt that first introduced him to a guitar (it was however an old guitar that she’d found in a cupboard that had no strings).

Adam was keen to learn and he took it to a music shop that put strings on it and sold him a chord music book and he started strumming along to his dad’s Johnny Cash records.

“So from then on I had a one track mind, that’s all I wanted to do.

“I could sing along to Dad’s records and I could sing the songs in the same key as Johnny Cash and people like that.

“I already had that low voice, even as a kid.”

Adam said his ability to sing (in his signature smooth low voice) comes from medical intervention when he was a teen.

Firies respond to Harvey’s money back guarantee airport emergency Fire and Rescue NSW Cobar Station 256 crew responded to an emergency at the Cobar Airport on Sunday following a report that an incoming plane was in trouble.

The aircraft, which was travelling from Wagga Wagga to Queensland carrying freight, had to make an emergency landing just after 11am on Sunday.

Brigade Captain Alex Lennon said a smoke indicator onboard the aircraft had alerted the pilots of smoke and shortly after, the cabin had started to fill with smoke.

“Our crews arrived to find smoke issuing from the right side of the aircraft under the wing area,” Captain Lennon said.

“Fire and Rescue crews quickly got to work dismantling the plane to locate the source of the fire and extinguish.”

He said an inspection of the inside of the aircraft determined the fire had started under the floor.

“The floor was removed and checked for further signs of heat and determined safe, the aircraft was secured, ventilated and the site handed over to airport staff,” Captain Lennon said.

“It was an excellent job by all involved, and the quick action by firefighters and aircraft crew prevented total loss of the aircraft.”

Staff from the Cobar Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade and NSW Ambulance were also in attendance.

There were no injuries however the plane sustained substantial damage. It was later removed from the runway and the aerodrome was declared operational again.

Community urged to vaccinate as flu season begins NSW Health is urging the community to book in for their influenza vaccine as the state’s flu season has now begun, with the latest data indicating influenza notifications have continued to increase.

More than 1,200 people in NSW were diagnosed with influenza during the past week, a 13 per cent increase compared with the previous week.

At the same time, there was also an increase in the number of people who presented to NSW emergency departments with influenzalike illness and required admission to hospital – the greatest increase has been in children.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said now is the time to book in for your influenza vaccine.

“Everyone six months and older is recommended to get a flu vaccine and these are available through GPs for any age group, as well as through pharmacies for everyone aged five years and over,” Dr Chant said.

“In particular, we want to remind priority groups that the flu vaccine is free and readily available – so please, book in today to give yourself the best possible protection from severe illness that can be brought on by influenza.”

Priority groups include: children aged six months to under five years; people aged 65 and over; Aboriginal people from six months of age; pregnant women; those with serious health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, immune disorders, obesity, severe asthma, kidney, heart, lung or liver disease.

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same time.

All adults can get a 2023 COVID-19 vaccine booster if it’s been six months or longer since their last COVID-19 booster or confirmed infection (whichever is most recent) for additional protection against severe illness from COVID-19.

We can all take steps to help protect ourselves and our loved ones from COVID-19 and flu, including: stay up to date with your recommended flu and COVID-19 vaccinations; stay home if you have cold or flu symptoms; wear a mask in crowded, indoor places; get together outdoors or in large, wellventilated spaces with open doors and windows; and wash or sanitise your hands often.

CHS students to take Silver Tank Stories on the road Cobar High School students are taking their Silver Tank Stories on the road and will feature in an exhibition at the Outback Arts Gallery in Coonamble from next week.

Their Silver Tank Stories sound installation weaves together original student compositions, interviews and recorded environmental sounds to capture the tales of the old Silver Tank into an 18-minute sound installation.

The “Silver Tank”, as it’s known to locals, sits on top of the hill on the outskirts of the town.

The tank was converted into the Cobar Sound Chapel (finished in April 2022), a bold creation by renowned composer and sound artist Georges Lentz in collaboration with Pritzker-Prize-winning architect Glenn Murcutt.

The Sound Chapel functions as the permanent home of Lentz’s digital surround-sound composition String Quartet(s), a vast piece of sound art inspired by the outback landscape and its night skies.

In August 2022, students at Cobar High School engaged in a week-long workshop facilitated by composer Elizabeth Jigalin and Cobar High School students involved in the Silver Tank Stories project. ▪ Contributed music teacher Laura Andrew.

Locals in Cobar remember the Silver Tank with both water and without – “it became a meeting place for picnics, fossicking, rabbit catching and riding bikes”.

A cool change is coming through Cobar’s picture-perfect Autumn weather is expected to only continue until the end of the week.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted a top of 27 degrees for Cobar today, 28 is forecast for tomorrow while Friday is expected to reach a very warm 30 degrees!

A late shower on Friday and more rain on Saturday will however herald the cooler temperatures with the thermometer expected to drop considerably with just 17 the expected top for Saturday.

While only a chance of rain is expected on Friday, there’s a good chance we will receive up to 15mm of rain on Saturday.

The cloudy conditions are expected to linger into Sunday but the Bureau predicts there’s only a slight chance of more showers.

• Aurelia Metals turned the lights off at their Hera Mine site near Nymagee on Friday morning as they wrapped up the transition to care and maintenance. The plant, offices and workshops were all powered down with Hera’s Mechanical Supervisor, Brad Lumbery having the honour of ‘flipping the switch’. Brad has been with Hera since day one and was there when they turned the lights on in 2014 and so it was only fitting that he turn them off. Aurelia praised everyone who worked tirelessly to de-

TRADES ASSISTANT - MOBILE MAINTENANCE CSA Mine, Cobar, NSW Job Ref: CSA1217 CSA Mine is looking for Trades Assistants to join the Mobile Maintenance team. This role will see you responsible for the daily refuelling and servicing of Mobile Maintenance equipment throughout the mine including undertaking daily inspections of the equipment. When required you will assist in general servicing of equipment within the workshop and will assist with stores duties including loading and unloading trucks and cages.

About the role: • Refuelling Mobile Maintenance equipment • Conduct daily inspections on equipment • Provide prompt feedback to Supervisors and Sandvik site PSA’s when issues/defects are found • Accurately record fuel and oil volumes as well as hour meter readings on all equipment • Service Mobile Plant equipment when required • Assist the Store when required – loading/ unloading parts • Monitor, maintain and check equipment and materials • Achieve daily production targets • General housekeeping and operational process activities

The successful applicant will have: • Current Australian Manual Driver’s Licence and Forklift ticket • Mining experience and a mechanical trade certificate will be highly regarded • UG mechanical maintenance experience in mobile fleet, including, but not limited to; Sandvik, Epiroc and Caterpillar equipment • Competent in equipment servicing and refuelling of mobile mining equipment • Previous experience in operating a fuel and lube service truck will be highly regarded • High commitment to a positive safety culture

Conditions This is a 7/7 continuous shift, residential roster. 12 weeks of transit accommodation is provided to assist the successful applicant to source their own accommodation locally. After a false start last season, there is a Youth League competition being played this year as part of the Christie & Hood Castlereagh Rugby League competition. The Cobar Roosters have entered a team with the boys (pictured above with new coach Paul Sullivan) having their first hit out together on Saturday at Coonamble at the league’s preseason knockout. (Some of the players also had a run with the Roosters First Grade side last week at Dunedoo.) Cobar finished the day with two wins and a narrow loss. They play their first competition game this Saturday in Narromine.

The Golfie Dartaholics recorded a narrow 6-5 win in their game against Empire Barflies in last Wednesday’s local Darts competition.

In the other game played, the Golfie Gophers took on the Golfie Spearchuckers winning 8-3.

Old rugby league players to reunite

The Cobar Roosters Rugby League Club is organising a club reunion on May 20 to celebrate a number of important milestones for the club.

Former player and reunion organizer, Barry Knight, said the club missed out on being able to celebrate their 100 years of rugby league anniversary in 2021 due to COVID lockdowns and restrictions.

“It’s also the 50 year anniversary of when we won three grades at Ward Oval and our first Clayton Cup win that same year,” Barry said.

“And we missed out on celebrating 50 years since our second Claytons Cup win in 2022.

“It’s also 55 years since we won the Group 15 grand final under coach Brad Wynd.”

It’s 25 years since the Roosters won the Claytons Cup in 1998. (It was the third time Cobar had won it with no other club having won it more than twice previously.)

“That year we also won Reserve Grade in Group 11,” Barry said.

“It would be good to see players from that era such as Scott Mieni, Tommy Good, Brian Prendergast, Matthew Ralph, ‘Nod’ Gordon Cobar Junior Soccer Club’s new soccer season kicked off on Saturday with the club and Steve Potter to name a few, at the reunholding a skills day. The Swanettes, who have been one of the leading teams in recent years in the Castlereagh league tag competition, served notice that they will once again be right in the mix for premiership honours this year.

They convincingly beat Cobar 26-0 before the Roosterettes re-gathered to defeat Binnaway 12-8 and Cobar also accounted for Baradine 8-4 in the consolation final to finish 3rd for the day.

The young Roosters side also recorded two wins and a loss in their knockout hit out.

They narrowly lost 8-4 to Narromine in their first game and then won their second match after receiving a forfeit from Gilgandra.

They finished the day on a high with a big 26-6 win over Binnaway.

Narromine finished as the knockout winners.

The young Roosters are on the road again this Saturday to kick start the 2023 competition with a game against Gilgandra at Narromine. (The Youth League has a modified draw to First Grade and Roosterettes however they will get to play a few home games on the same days as the senior teams.)
