The second, now annual, Palettes and Palates in the Paddock event held on Saturday night at Scrubby Valley east of Cobar, is being hailed a huge success with this year’s 120 guests all declaring it a great night. The event was the brainchild of local artist and business woman, Seigrid Peters, who collaborated with local chef, Haylee Prince to give locals (and visitors) a unique bush experience. The pair built on the success of last year’s event and this year added an extra 40 tickets. The event aimed to showcase the bush and also local businesses. See Page 2 for full report.

“This year I felt stressed that I wasn’t as stressed as last year,” she said.

“Everything was just happening but I was worried we were missing something.

“This year it flowed better,” Seigrid said.

Haylee agreed.

“On the night I was a bit busy, but it all went pretty smoothly.

“There was a really good atmosphere throughout the night,” Haylee said.

“And we got lots of good feedback.”

The event was an idea of Seigrid’s.

“I was trying to work out how I can get more people out in the bush to celebrate the bush, how we could do it creatively and obviously we’d need bloody good food,” Seigrid told The Cobar Weekly.

“So I decided to approach Haylee.

Palettes and palates—two meanings, two different spellings that are summed up by their respective talents.

A lot of hard work and effort went into the planning and execution of their two events (including Seigrid hand drawing 120 canvases for guests to paint) but it has paid off with many of last year’s guests returning to celebrate again this year.

Now in it’s third year, the Never Late FeMail Postie Ride will once again be supporting Wings4Kidz who provide free transport for kids from regional NSW to vital medical treatment, saving families time, money and the stress from being away from home.

Wings4Kidz runs purely on donations and 100 per cent of all donations go towards their flight service—pilots, planes and fuel costs.

Wings4Kidz’s ground support staff and vehicles are all donated so there is no cost to families who use the service.

Jodie’s family has had cause to use the service with her two grandchildren travelling to Sydney for specialist medical care a number of times.

Simone’s dad is one of the ride organisers but she said that doesn’t get her any favours.

This year’s Never Late Fe-Mail Postie Ride has 90 registered female riders from across NSW who have a combined fundraising goal of $300,000.

The Cobar girls have more than pulled their weight towards that goal.

After having raised $31,000 over the past two years, Jodie said she was keen to set a really big target this year of $40,000.

The pair are blown away that they have already exceeded it and are now close to the $50,000 mark.

Their fundraising this year has been earned predominantly from collecting cans and bottles for Return and Earn.

They’ve also been helped with a $12,000 sponsorship from the MAC Copper/CSA Postie bike riders and fundraisers, Jodie Jones and Simone Martin, are all set for this Mine and a $10,000 donation from Aurelia year’s Never Late Fe-Mail Postie Ride which raises money for Wings4Kidz.

Pin Up girl Shelley Minson to perform at Gig on the Grass Musician and Pin Up girl Shelley Minson will be performing at next month’s Gig on the Grass as part of this year’s Grey Mardi Gras festival.

Shelley and her multi award winning musician husband Lawrie, are based in Tamworth and play a fun mix of 50s Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rockabilly.

Shelley launched her first album Rockability at the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend in 2015 and has since headlined major festivals including Cooly Rocks On (Coolangatta), the Parkes Elvis Festival, Shepparton Shakeout, Gympie Music Muster and Ballarat Beat.

She has a love of the 1950s era and has been dressing in a vintage inspired style for a number of years.

Shelley has been featured in many retro magazines including Pin Up America, Retro Lovely, Retro Vintage Review Magazine and Pin Up Skool.

Her love of pin up has led to Shelley judging the Pin Up Australia competition and the Pin Up comp at Cooly Rocks On, Best Vintage style dressed competitions at Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival and Melbourne Love Vintage.

Shelley’s musician husband Lawrie Minson has more than 40 years of professional playing experience.

The couple are a crowd favourite and are always a popular addition for festival shows and local venues.

Lawrie’s work credentials are a ‘who’s who’ Tamworth-based musician, Shelley Minson has a love of the 1950s era and dresses in the of Australian Music – Jimmy Barnes, Lee vintage inspired style for her Rock ‘n’ Roll gigs. Shelley will share the Gig on the Grass big stage with The Blues Brothers Rebooted tribute band, crooner Terry Leonard (singing hits from the 1950s and 1960s) as well as Cobar’s own pub rock band, Ballz n All.

A real boost for the community

Dear editor, On behalf of the Tilpa community, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible participants and organisers of the 6th Suzuki Rally.

Their generosity and enthusiasm have once again made a significant contribution to our little village of Tilpa, raising over $50,000.

The Suzuki rally is not only a highlight of the year for many but also a crucial fundraising effort that directly benefits our community.

The funds raised will go a long way in maintaining and upgrading our community facilities, ensuring they remain a valuable resource for everyone.

The overwhelming support shown by the Suzuki rally participants, who travelled from near and far, as well as those who contributed to the auction, is truly inspiring.

The 2024 Suzuki Rally’s contributions enabled the upgrade of the Tilpa Hall’s very outdated chairs and tables.

We now have 10 tables and 80 chairs, which have already been used several times at community and catering events.

We appreciate the dedication of Graeme Barton and Paul Whytcross and their team to make this event such a success.

Their passion and generosity continue to strengthen our community.

We look forward to welcoming the Suzuki Rally back to Tilpa in the future for more adventures and shared goodwill.

Grain Road seal extended

There’s a bit more tar on the roads in the Cobar Shire. Council advised last week that the seal extension on the Grain Road, funded through the NSW State Government’s Fixing Local Roads Program, has been completed. Located east of Euabalong, the Grain Road services both local and regional communities, as well as agricultural and mining businesses. Indigenous young leaders

The Parliament of NSW is launching its first-ever Young Aboriginal Leaders Program, a tailored initiative designed to empower and inspire young leaders across the state.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler is encouraging young Indigenous people in his electorate to apply.

“It is open to young leaders aged 18 to 25 to provide them with an experience focused on leadership, networking, and community impact, as well as providing participants with the opportunity to learn about parliamentary processes,” Mr Butler explained.

As part of the three-day fully-funded residential program, to run in June, participants will: develop leadership and communication skills; learn about parliamentary processes; engage with Aboriginal leaders and real-world case studies; and deliver a speech in the Legislative Council Chamber at Parliament House.

Thieves disturbed by a resident

Celebrating harmony

Two thieves who were attempting to break into a main street business in the early hours of Saturday morning were disturbed by a nearby neighbour.

Just after 3am on Saturday two males driving a maroon coloured sedan (which is believed to have been stolen) attempted to break into a business premises in Marshall Street.

One of the males used a hammer (or similar object) to smash the front glass window of the premises.

A nearby resident was alerted by the sound of smashing glass and disturbed the two males.

One of the males took a pair of binoculars from the display case before they both left in the maroon sedan.

Investigations are continuing.

Anyone who may have been in the area at the time or saw the vehicle is asked to contact Cobar Police or Crime Stoppers.

Ride-on mower and trailer stolen Police are investigating the theft of a ride -on mower and trailer that was stolen from the Cobar Golf Course last week.

Police received a report that a yellow zero turn mower on a silver box trailer (registration TL60GS) was stolen from the golf course sometime between 2.30pm on Friday and 10am on Saturday.

Investigations are continuing.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact Cobar Police or Crime Stoppers.

Cobar Public School held Harmony Week at school last week which is a celebration of Australia’s multiculturalism and encourages kids to embrace diversity, respect others, and feel a sense of belonging. Students engaged in a range of lessons with the theme ‘We all belong’. They created recipes for harmony, acrostic poems, harmony dolls and harmony hearts. Students and teachers learnt about some of the different cultures within our community and how many of the foods and traditions we love have actually originated from other cultures. 5/6K presented a range of their work at assembly, where Evie Cain spoke to students reminding us that: “Our differences don’t separate us, they actually bring us closer together”. ‘Twas a belated Wearin’ of the Green at VIEW Club meeting ‘Twas a belated “Wearin’ of the Green” in the Empire function room last Tuesday as 14 Cobar VIEW Club ladies gathered for the club’s March meeting.

A bright array of green outfits, leprechaun hats, balloons and Irish table decorations set the scene for what was an enjoyable St Patrick’s Day with music, jokes and ditties topped off with a superb Irish menu of Guinness pie, stuffed potatoes, green fruit jelly and peppermint layered chocolate cake.

The meeting’s guest speaker, Cobar Shire Librarian Jane Siermans, took everyone on a trip down memory lane, producing information about interesting Cobar events and community involvement over the years, as depicted in several publications housed at the library.

Much discussion and laughter was generated by Jane’s presentation, particularly in reference to the contributions of Cobar residents to the 1990 Nyngan Flood ‘washing initiative’.

Most ladies were able to relate a memory or two of their involvement.

Joan O’Brien won the raffle, Pru Humphries collected the Lucky Door prize and a reminder was given to members to decorate an Easter bonnet for the April meeting.— contributed

Last year, more than 139,000 nominees from over 500 organisations were recognised at Regional and State Ceremonies.

There are seven categories for the awards: Young Volunteer of the Year (24 years and under); Adult Volunteer of the Year (25 to 64 years); Senior Volunteer of the Year (65 years and over); Volunteer Team of the Year (two individuals or more); Emergency Volunteer of the Year; Volunteer Leader of the Year (designated volunteer manager); and Not-for-Profit Voluntary Governance Award (an unpaid board of directors or individual board member).

Young people wanted for YAC! Are you a youth with an opinion that wants to be heard?

Young people aged 12 – 24 years who are eager to make a difference on issues that matter to them are encouraged to apply for a position on the 2026 NSW Youth Advisory Council (YAC).

Twelve young individuals from across NSW, each bringing their unique life experiences, are encouraged to apply for a oneyear term to provide advice to the Minister for Youth and the Advocate for Children and Young People.

Minister for Youth, Rose Jackson, said an essential part of improving outcomes for youth is by engaging with young advocates who are championing the needs of their community and generation.

“We believe that the most impactful change comes from listening to those with lived experiences and amplifying their voices. The diverse members of the Youth Advisory Council will offer invaluable insights to the NSW Government on issues directly affecting young people, while also sharing their inspiring visions for the future,” Minister Jackson said.

Advocate for Children and Young People, Zoë Robinson, said it is important for young people to have their say on the policies and services that affect them.

“We know that the best solutions are crafted when informed by young voices. Joining the Youth Advisory Council offers a genuine opportunity for young people to collaborate with the government to enhance the lives of all young people in NSW,” Ms Robinson said.

“Our state is rich in diversity, and every young person has something valuable to contribute to the YAC. “I urge everyone aged 12 to 24 to visit the ACYP website to learn more about the application process.”

The YAC serves as a vital communication bridge between the youth of NSW and the NSW Government.

The parking area on the eastern approach to town has been a popular spot over the past month with lots of caravaners and travellers parking up and taking advantage of the shade from the trees in the adjacent Heritage Park.

Cobar shooters The real competition is set to begin gain selection to NSW teams Cobar Clay Target Club’s Bryan Manns finished as the Open High Gun winner at the NSW Western Zone Clay Target carnival at Dubbo on Saturday.

Manns hit 249 out of 250 targets to win the Inland Petroleum $500 cash prize.

He was one of four Cobar club members to earn High Gun status from the field of 63 shooters.

Cliff Overton, with 242/250 took out A Grade, Aiden Barraclough won the Junior title with a score of 240/260 and Kevin Hatch was the Veteran winner with 246/250.

Manns shot 199/200 to win the AA Grade NSWCTA Western Zone DTL (Down The Line) Championships.

Terry Albo, from Sydney, finished as the overall winner with a perfect score of 200/200.

Barraclough claimed the A Grade title with a score of 115/116.

Manns also qualified for the NSW Clay Target Association Western Zone Postal Team with Cobar’s Rob Thompson also earning a spot on the team.

Manns will also line up with Cobar club member Matt Stokes in the Western Zone DTL Open team, Hatch and Overton made the Veteran team and Barraclough and Darcy Manns (who had to overcome a gun malfunction), have qualified for the Junior team.

All will compete at the Australian Clay Target Association Nationals event in Wagga Wagga in October.

Pretty good times

You had to set a pretty good time to win at the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club’s event last Tuesday night as it was the last chance to grab championship points for the season.

The handicapper, Paul Swainston, set the best time of the night when he swam to within 0.03 seconds of his nominated time in the 50m handicapped freestyle event.

Greg Dimond was just behind on 0.06 and James Daymond was third on 0.09.

Murray Harland won the 30m event after he finished within 0.06 seconds of his nominated time.

Kyle Roberts and Paul Finucane tied for second spot after they both swam to within 0.13 seconds of their nominated times.

Daymond made his second podium appearance for the night after winning the 100m event.

He finished within 0.22 seconds of his time ahead of Harland (on 0.78) and Ben Plush was third with 0.84 seconds off his nominated time.

Chris Powell and John Carswell paired up to win the Brace Relay novelty event.

The pair completed the Ester Williams swim (one stroke of freestyle and one stroke of backstroke etc across the pool) within 1.01 seconds of their combined nominated time.

Harland and Tom Jones were second on 1.15 and Plush and Stephen Clark finished third with 1.22 seconds off their time.

The Brace Relay championships were held last night, which was the Yabbies final event of the season with the pool set to close at the end of the month.

Young Guns win by a convincing margin of +14

A Triples Bowls Club Championship match was played at the Golfie on Sunday morning with the ‘Young Guns’ team of Alec Fraser, Jay Egan and Mark Fraser claiming a big win.

‘The Young Guns’ just would not give up the mat to their opposition against Russell Brosi, Shine McIver and Marlene Wynd, who tried to rally after a sluggish start.

Fraser, Egan and Fraser held tight to the mat for 90 per cent of play and they won by a convincing margin of +14.

They will now progress to the next round.

The winners of Sunday’s Social Bowls event were Randall Hall, John Goonrey and Gerard Livingston by +11 against David Thomas, Bian Smith and Craig Grimmond.

The runners-up by +10 were Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey, Allan Knight and Barry Bargwanna who won their match with Dean ‘Bogga’ McLeod, Doug Hudson and Cole Bunting.

This match was reportedly a slam dunk from the get go!

The third game was much closer and the teams were within a couple of shots of each other most of play.

Couple of close matches in Open Touch comp There were a couple of close matches played in Round 8 of the Open Mixed Touch competition on Thursday night.

Rusty Snails held on to claim a one point win over Running on Empty in their game while Concrete Cowboys fought back to beat Phat Athletes by two points in their close encounter.

Rusty Snails had the upper hand early in their Round 8 game with Running on Empty and by half time they had a 5-3 lead.

A second half come back, led by Ethan McLeod who scored three second half tries, almost upset the end result however Rusty Snails held out to finish with a 7-6 win.

Ben Dormer crossed for three tries for Rusty Snails with team mates Ben McBride, Chan Mayol, Mat Shepherd and Oscar Ryan all touching down for a try each.

For Running on Empty, McLeod finished with a tally of four tries with Mitch Dunne and Ethan Brookman also crossing for a try each.

Best & Fairest points were shared by McLeod, Mark McBride (Rusty Snails) and Mason King (Running on Empty).

Phat Athletes were ahead 2-1 at half time in their Round 8 match last week with one of the competition’s front runners, Concrete Cowboys.

The Cowboys came back in the second half scoring three more tries to Phat Athletes’ one to finish with a 5-3 victory in what was a heated match.

Kai Greenwood and Bridgette Negfeldt each added two points to Concrete Cowboys’ tally (Greenwood scored twice and Negfeldt’s try was worth two points as female tries are worth double points) and Zac Broughton was their other try scorer.

Ella Oborn, with four tries, and Jack Dunn, with three touchdowns, led the scoring for the Blossoms in their 17-7 win over Guns N Hoses in their match last week.

Jaxon Burke (2) and Sosie Barton (2) also contributed to Blossoms’ big tally.

In reply, Guns N Hoses’ points came from tries to Jack Eades (2), Jasmine Beddows, Kiara McKay and Steven Neate.

McKay, Parker Cryer (Guns N Hoses) and Burke collected B&F points.

Makos called all the shots in their Round 8 match up with Fast Fades easily winning 20-2.

Rhylee Jeffery led the scoring for Makos with four tries, Jed Noonan Reynold Mugugia, and Tim Hillam each scored doubles with Brianna Watson, Jack Brown, Kody Martin and Myah Sullivan adding the extras with a try each.

Leisa Mexted was Fast Fades’ lone try scorer.

Noonan, Sam Best (Fast Fades) and Jeffery earned the game’s B&F points.

Triathlon club celebrates end of a very successful season The Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad’s (CATS) 2024/2025 season wrapped up on Sunday morning with the club holding their final triathlon and end of season presentations at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

After having a few years away from the sport, Mick Howell returned this season and improved his Long Course time from 1hr 17min at the start of the season to 1.06 at the end.

Howell was named the Male Triathlete of the Year.

Claudine Griffiths, who progressed from competing in teams, to completing the Short Course as an individual, was named the Female Triathlete of the Year.

Andrew Hill, who is new to the sport this season, was named the Most Improved Triathlete.

Over the season Hill improved his Short Course time by almost 10 minutes, from 52min 45sec down to his best time of 43.17.

Aisea Fakahua, who competed all year as part of teams, was named the Mini Triathlete of the Year and Lilly Fairfull, who competed individually and in teams, was the Junior Triathlete of the Year.

The Team Mate of the Year was Jayden Cryer, who was always willing to step up to make up a team.

Caleb Theakston recorded the fastest time in the Short Course on Sunday with 36.40.

The Cash team (Hannah Trudgett, Cooper Trudgett and Ashton Campbell) had the quickest time in the Try a Tri event with 31.00.

Mick Howell (1.07.25) finished ahead of Amie Hill (1.15.28) and Parker Cryer (1.21.41) in the Long Course (500m swim/ 20km ride/ 4km run).

Four second series proved to be a challenge

The 25m Rapid Fire event at the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club last week tested shooters skills with the four second series proving challenging for the field of 12 competitors.

Todd Manns out gunned Michael Garbutt to shoot a top score of 510.

Added to his handicap of 115, Manns finished with a total score 625 and is now sporting a new handicap of 81.

Other scores recorded on the day were: Garbutt 496-92-588; Adam Green 424-241665 (and a new handicap of 158), Daniel Peek 268-350-618 (and a new handicap of 299), Tracey Lawrence 280-307-587; John Woloczij 262-267-529; Paul Lawrence 212216-428; Robert Neate 264-66-330 and Michael Tidyman shot in two matches to record 105-350-455 and 81-350-431.

This week’s scheduled match will be a 25m Service Pistol event.

Big crowd for Roosters season launch The Cobar Roosters Rugby League Club The Roosters side, under the watchful eye of points on the board when Tom Plater, with launched their 2025 season at Tom Knight new coach Paul Sullivan, was made up of a support from Tim Hillam, attacked the line.

The subsequent conversion was the game winner and Lake finished with a narrow 12-10 win victory.

The preceding League Tag match had the benefit of a one degree cooler temperature but it was still tough going playing in the heat.

Lake Cargelligo boasted some fast, handy players and many of their tries in their 32-4 victory were scored from break away runs.

Rori Urquhart was the only Roosterette able to penetrate the Lake defence when she scored early in the match.

Cobar’s quicks, Brianna Watson, Aisha Chris Crotty (at centre with the ball) is back in the Cobar Roosters First Grade line-up Schofield, Bridgette Negfeldt and Taylah for the 2025 season. The team had its first run in a preseason match with the Lake Good, made good ground throughout the Cargelligo Sharks on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval with the visitors finishing match, however were unable to convert their efforts into points. as narrow 12-10 winners.
