Neighbours raise alert on house fire

Emergency services were called to a house fire on Bourke Road on Monday morning.

Fire and Rescue NSW, Rural Fire Service support staff, paramedics, police and Essential Energy personnel attended.

There was no one at home at the time the fire broke out and it was neighbours who alerted emergency services to the fire at about 11.30am.

Upon arrival, emergency services found the house to be well alight.

Bourke Road was closed to traffic in both directions for about two hours until fire crews were able to extinguish the fire.

While there was severe damage to the interior of the home, it’s understood the tenants didn’t lose everything in the fire (as they were in the process of moving).

Firefighters managed to contain the fire and prevented it from spreading to two sheds on the property (where a motor vehicle, motorbikes and other items were still being stored).

The cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated by Cobar Police and Central North Detectives.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Anyone with any information in relation to this fire is urged to contact Cobar Police or Crimestoppers.

Firefighters would like to remind the public if they see fire trucks and witches hats out to cordon off an area, motorists then need to avoid that area and find an alternative route.

The warning comes after a firefighter was almost hit by a vehicle whose driver ignored the cones and drove over a fire hose during a mopping up exercise at the home on Tuesday morning.

Framework gives a good idea of how ELC will look With the framework almost completed on the new Early Learning Centre (ELC) at Ward Oval, you can start to get a sense of what a great space it’s going to be.

Johnny Wellman, the site manager for building contractor, David Payne Construction, provided The Cobar Weekly with an update on the project during a walk-through of the site last Wednesday.

Johnny said the frame would be complete in about four to five weeks and then it will be ready for the roof to go on.

“That will take about seven days,” Johnny said.

“The goal is we’re wrapped up, windows in, roof on, at lock up, by end of October.

“That’s the next milestone from here.”

He said while rain had caused some delays and erection of the framework was taking longer than first anticipated, they were however running pretty close to schedule.

Johnny said about 80 per cent of the inground services (electrical and plumbing) had been completed and the rough-in would commence in about four to five weeks (at lock-up stage).

David Payne Construction is also concurrently building the new multipurpose hall at Ward Oval and that project is running about three weeks behind the ELC. Johnny said another crew of carpenters would be arriving on site this week to start erecting the framework for the hall.

He said their target was for the whole Ward Cobar Shire Council staff Carly Hunter and Summer Patterson did a walk through of the Oval project to be complete by February.

When complete Cobar Shire Council’s Early Learning Centre construction site at Ward Oval last Wednesday with architect Kubby House Child Care Centre will move to Ashley Dunn. All three were impressed with the progress of the build to date. the new ELC and the service will expand to accommodate 88 child care places.

In addition to Cobar Shire Council staff, including Kubby centre coordinator Peta Rufo, and the media having a walk-through last week, architect Ashley Dunn from Dunn & Hillam, was also on site to see how things were going.

Ashley said he was very pleased with the progress and said so far the build had gone exactly to plan.

He pointed out various features of the new centre, explained how each of the rooms were laid out and how they were connected to the bathrooms and to the outside play areas.

Ashley said one of the features they had included in the older children’s room (the preschoolers) was a large picture window where children will be able to look out on to the adjacent Cobar Public School oval, which is where some of the children will go to school the following year, and making it already familiar to them.

He pointed out the enclosed verandah outdoor area which will be able to be used for play on wet days and also on very hot days.

Ashley said additional thought had gone into planning the large storage area which has roller door access front and back which will make it easy for staff to pack away and store large outdoor play equipment, bikes etc After her walk-through last week, Kubby House coordinator Peta Rufo said she was really excited with the progress being made at the new ELC. “The architects have taken a very considered approach to all aspects of early childhood education in the design.

“The ELC is going to provide our children with a quality learning space for many years to come,” Peta said.

Business Concierge from Service NSW for Business Cindy Burrowes from Narromine gave an overview of the services they can offer including: navigating government regulations, business profiles, licences and permits, grants and rebates, mental health support, liaising with other government agencies, the Women in Business Hub, managing debt, disaster and emergency assistance, cybersecurity support, business planning and marketing, and general business advice.

Cindy makes regular visits to Cobar and said she is able to meet one-on-one with business owners face-to-face or online.

She said her presentation was only a brief overview of what Service NSW for Business can offer and encouraged anyone wanting more information to contact her through the Business Concierge team.

Anthony Doyle, a business advisor from Service NSW Business Connect, also spoke at last week’s information night.

Options for old filtration plant

Cobar’s old water filtration plant on Fort Bourke Hill could be used to treat mine wastewater, be turned into a museum or developed as a look-out café with a fantastic view.

These are some of the options that will be put to Cobar Shire Councillors for discussion about what to do with the old plant at tomorrow’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

The water treatment plant was constructed in 1964 and was used up until 2018 when the new plant was built.

Cobar Shire recently approached NSW Public Works to provide a report on options of what to do with the old plant.

While the building is nearly 60 years old, it does have an expected design life of 80-100 years.

According to the NSW Public Works report, a building structure inspection in 2020 found the building to “generally be in good condition” but made some recommendations for minor repairs to ensure the ongoing safety and structural stability of the building.

The NSW Public Works report offered council five options of what could be done with the old building including: 1 Doing nothing; 2 Keeping the building and doing minor remedial work; 3 Demolishing it; 4 and 5 Reusing it for treating mine wastewater or as a business venture such as café or museum.

In his report to Council, Water & Sewer Manager Victor Papierniak recommended Option 2 which is to keep the building and undertake remedial works at an estimated cost of $100,000.

Mr Papierniak also recommends council include an additional $5,000 per annum in their budget for ongoing monitoring and maintenance.

Mr Papierniak said Option 1 of doing nothing was not considered viable due to potential safety and operational risks.

He reported the demolition option would incur large capital costs (and the telecommunications network would need to be relocated).

Mr Papierniak suggested while the reuse options were potentially suitable, they would however require third party interest or a business plan which currently does not have any backing.

He said they could however still be considered in the future.

Carter returned to chair the Cobar Liquor Accord

Cobar Services Club’s secretary/ manager Linda Carter was returned as Chairperson of the Cobar Liquor Accord committee at the group’s annual general meeting earlier this month.

Cobar Bowling & Golf Club manager Jason Howell was elected as Deputy Chairperson and Cobar Shire Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko was elected as Secretariat/ Treasurer.

Liquor accords aim to improve the operation of licensed premises, promote responsible service and consumption of alcohol and prevent or reduce alcohol-related harm.

All pubs, clubs and venues that sell alcohol along with relevant stakeholders in the community (council and police) are invited to join the local accord.

The accord provides a forum to proactively discuss views, concerns and expectations, while working towards preventing liquorrelated issues affecting local businesses and the community.

In a report to the August meeting concerning barred patrons from local venues over the past two months, Cobar Bowling & Golf Club had three females and four males face the board while one male patron was suspended for three months for abusing staff and exposing himself.

The Great Western Hotel reported one male patron had been banned for three months for being abusive towards staff.

Cobar Police reported to the meeting one male had been issued with an infringement notice for failure to quit a licensed premises and re-enter ($550 penalty), one female and two males had been charged with fail to quit and offensive behaviour ($500) and a three month ban had been placed on a patron at the Empire Hotel following an incident.

VIEW Club members get taken on a tour of USA Ladies were treated to a virtual tour of three USA cities when Anna Vlatko shared her recent holiday experiences at the Cobar VIEW Club’s August meeting last week.

Anna’s comprehensive talk, filled with amusing anecdotes and factual information, took members around Los Angeles, along Rodeo Drive, through a rather wet experience at Universal Studios and on to Las Vegas with its beautiful casinos and very expensive hotels with amazing interiors.

Anna was impressed with New York and said their visit to the Twin Towers memorial proved heart wrenching.

The Empire State Building, Times Square, the Trump Building, a baseball game and horse and carriage ride through Central Park were brought to life for everyone with Anna’s lively reporting skills and great photos.

Items discussed during the meeting in general business included organising the club’s Father’s Day raffle, an outing to the Miners Memorial in October, Oaks Day luncheon and the possibility of holding a Blue Illusion fashion parade.

Helix Resources Limited has announced it will push ahead with an aggressive exploration work program at Canbelego.

The Canbelego Mineral Resource is a joint venture of Helix Resources and Aeris Resources Limited.

Helix Managing Director Mike Rosenstreich said they had gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about the style and signature of the high-grade copper resource at Canbelego.

“Now, we want to apply those unique insights to adjacent prospects such as the Western Lodes and earlier stage targets to find more copper,” Mr Rosenstreich said in a recent ASX Announcement.

“The Company is also keen to get a preliminary understanding of the potential mining economics at Canbelego.

“There are several processing plants in the area within conceivable haulage distances and we need to be prepared to respond to inquiries regarding commercialisation opportunities which have started with the release of the new Canbelego Resource in June 2023.”

Aeris has elected not to contribute to the work program and Helix will sole fund the exploration efforts, which will dilute Aeris’ equity interest in the JV project.

Aeris however remains supportive of the project and of continuing to advance the Canbelego Mineral Resource to a preliminary mining study.

CSA Mine is one of Australia’s longest operating copper mines with a history stretching back almost 150 years. At 1.9 kilometers deep, CSA is the second deepest copper mine in Australia and the third highest copper grade in the world. Located near the NSW town of Cob ar, CSA Mine employs around 550 people and produces approximately 40,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year. The ore is mined and processed on site and then transported by rail 700km to the Port of Newcastle for export. CSA Mine was acquired by Metals Acquisition Limited in June 2023.

Accounts Payable Officer CSA Mine Cobar, NSW

CSA Mine is looking for an experienced Accounts Payable Officer to join the Finance team. You will work in a team that is focused on safety, while driving to meet the plan. You will work in one of the world’s most iconic mining districts, which has the second highest grade copper mine in the country.

In this role you will be responsible for: • Performing accounting and clerical tasks related to the efficient maintenance and processing of accounts payable transactions • Coordinating the approval of invoices between stores/purchasing and the requestor • Ensuring that any variances and invoices approved without purchase orders have been appropriately approved • Process invoices into Pronto in a timely manner ensuring that payment is made within agreed terms • Check supplier statements on a regular basis and follow up discrepancies • Reconcile petty cash on a regular basis and credit card statements monthly • Assist other members of the Finance team with reconciliations as requested • Liaise with Mine Accountant for cash flow needs for accounts payable • Other tasks as directed by the Supervisor About you: • 1-3 years accounts payable or general accounting experience • Knowledge and understanding of accounts payable, general accounting procedures and relevant accounting software • Strong communication and interpersonal skills • Ability to work effectively as part of a team • Current Australian Driver’s Licence (minimum P2 or equivalent) Conditions: This is a residential position and is offered on a 5D2O4D3O (9-day fortnight) roster. Relocation costs and a housing subsidy will be provided to the successful candidate to assist in relocating to Cobar. CSA also provides Pool & Gym Reimbursements to our employees and their dependants.

Treble for Greig, double for Prisk

A winning treble (including the Cup) for Dubbo trainer Connie Greig and a double for local trainer Wayne Prisk, were highlights on Saturday at the Cobar Picnic race meeting.

Greig has the bulk of qualifiers for the $50,000 Picnic Final at Coonamble in October with Gossip emerging as a leading contender with a dominant win in the 1,700 metres DJW & Wells Ventilation Cobar Picnic Cup on Saturday.

During the current Picnic season Gossip had won the Cups at Tomingley and Wean (and also the Cobar Copper Cup at the professional meeting) and topped off the preparation with a third at the Dubbo TAB meeting last week.

Ridden by leading Picnic jockey Leandro Ribeiro, Gossip ($2.30 favourite) travelled third to the home turn then took control for a 2 1/2 lengths win over Broo Boss (Ricky Blewitt, $10) and Merdeka (Grady Spokes, $2.80).

Sombre start for footy semi finals

The Cobar Roosters Reggies came off second best to the Coonabarabran Unicorns in the first round of the Castlereagh League Finals in Dunedoo on Saturday.

The day started off with a minute’s silence after the passing of the Unicorns’ Captain/ Coach Kyle Turner just 12 hours prior, which put a fire in the Unicorns’ belly and they were ready for the battle ahead.

The Cobar boys found themselves running into the wind after the toss which felt like a brick wall, and to make it worse, the Unicorns’ defence felt very much the same.

For Cobar, fitness is optional in their team while the Unicorns definitely had a few fast colts which proved to be difficult for the Cobar defenders to keep hold of.

Cobar was down a few playmakers for the game and so were lacking direction and they soon found themselves behind the posts wondering how to come back from this precharged up Unicorns outfit.

At half time the score was 22-0 in favour of the Unicorns.

The Cobar Reggie recruits re-grouped at half time and came out firing.

Now with the wind at their backs, they planned to use it to their advantage.

Unfortunately the opposition had different plans and they started picking apart the Roosters defence even more so.

The Cobar team then remembered why they joined up this year (and it wasn’t so much to win the game but to come together and also have a few beers).

From then on it was a relaxed Reggies team who returned for a kick-off and they started to play some good football, even stringing a whole 10 minutes together of good play which resulted in the rounded Shane Suridge hitting a hole in the Unicorns’ defence to score what would be the only try of the game for the Roosters.

The final score of 42-6 will see the Unicorns play next week for a spot in the grand final while Cobar will be heading back to Dunedoo this week for a second chance at gold.

The home stretch

The Cobar Roosters recorded a 22-14 win over Dunedoo in the Christie & Hood Castlereagh First Grade qualifying semi final on Saturday at Dunedoo and are on the home stretch to the final.

Played in breezy conditions at Dunedoo’s Robertson Oval, the Roosters managed to come back from an 8-0 deficit early in proceedings against the Swans to claw their way back on the scoreboard to have it reading 8-all at the break courtesy of a converted try and then a penalty goal right on the half time siren.

Their momentum carried them to a 16-8 lead in the second half before the Swans’ centre Villiame Turuva scored his third try for the afternoon to make it 16-14 and then it was very much game on.

Tim Hillam’s second try for the Roosters gave them a bit of breathing space, extending their lead out to eight at 22-14.

With tensions running high in both camps, the final quarter of the match saw a Cobar player binned and a Dunedoo player sent off with 15 minutes remaining following a dust up. Bantam Roosters bow out of finals

The Cobar Roosters Under 10s side were narrowly beaten (by just two points) by Warren in their Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League elimination semi final on Saturday.

The close 18-16 match was played at Dubbo’s Apex Oval with both teams putting on a great display of footy skills.

With six tries scored in the match, three apiece, it was an entertaining one to watch.

Cobar’s tries were scored by Hugo Josephson, Dusty McDonald and Austin Kane with Austin and Eligh Ritter adding another two points each to Cobar’s total with their successful conversions.

The loss for Cobar now ends the Roosters’ run in the competition this season.

The field of 98 shooters braved the rainy conditions with some local shooters being successful in their grades including: Matt Harland who won A Grade with a score of 86/90; Darcy Manns scooped first place in C Grade with 75/90; Peter Hosie with 95/96 was 2nd in AA Grade; Luke Scales was the runner-up in B Grade with 84/90; and Aiden Barraclough finished 2nd in C Grade with 69/90.

Clear skies and a sunny day on Saturday morning provided beautiful shooting conditions for the field of 139 shooters competing in the Golden Clay & NSW Junior Masters program.

In the first event, a 30 Target Point Score Championship sponsored by Cobar Powerhouse, local winners included Jason Mitchell, who was 1st in B Grade with 88/90; Wayde Hawkins was 2nd in AA Grade with 195/198; and Darcy Manns finished 2nd in C Grade with 78/90.

In the 45 Target MAC CSA Mine Medley, Jason Mitchell, with 95/100, was 2nd in B Grade and Aiden Barraclough, with 63/75, placed 2nd in C Grade.
