They started this trip, their 17th Shitbox Rally, as the highest fundraisers.

The pair, aka Ken and Barbie, are driving a pink Tarago they’ve named the Barbie campervan which has faithfully served them on 531,000km.

(Prior to taking part in Shitbox rallies, the pair have also been on 10 Variety Bashes.)

“Poor old Barbie is getting towards the end of its life,” Dom said.

“For 65 litres of petrol you get about 300km, the fuel economy is dreadful.

“But we do have air-conditioning and an inner spring mattress in the back so we don’t have to pitch a tent.

“The fun is just driving along in a group of seven [cars] watching the stupid antics of the people around you.

“You have to keep the fuel tank really full, as once you get down to about half full, it really gets the horrors,” John said.

“We just keep filling it up with jerry cans.

“The whole bus is also full of dust, our bed, our clothes,” Mel added.

“Apart from it being a great cause, I just love the banter, when there’s nothing much happening on the road and the buddy group are just chatting,” John said.

Restoration of a Cobar icon’s grave is now complete According to local legend, Kate McKenzie was a very eccentric woman who used to walk the streets of Cobar wielding a stock whip which she threatened to use to keep kids in line.

And while many Cobar residents may have indeed feared her, there’s no doubt Kate McKenzie goes down in history as a ‘Cobar icon’.

When Kate died in 1964, she had no family to speak of and was buried at the Cobar Cemetery in the old Catholic Section in a nondescript grave.

A group of concerned residents, headed up

by Jill Weaving, rallied around and raised funds to give Kate a proper grave.

“The money was raised by the townspeople and a few people volunteered to do the work,” Jill said.

“Wayne [her husband], Neville Good, Rusty [Kevin] Mitchell and Tim Arnold have all helped and the Buffalo Lodge gave us $500.

“All up we raised $2,271.05.

“We purchased two headstones, one for Kate and another for John Kowalski, Johnny the Balt.

“It was $2,000 for the two headstones and we just made up the rest of the costs for concreting etc ourselves,” Jill explained.

She said as Johnny the Balt (who Jill describes as another Cobar icon) wasn’t buried in Cobar, it’s still to be sorted where his headstone might be located.

Jill Weaving and Joan Maiden have been part of a group of concerned locals who have Jill said she’s been talking with Cobar Shire worked to give one of Cobar’s icons, Kate McKenzie, a fitting resting place in the old Council staff about locating the plaque at the old Council Chambers building in Linsley Catholic Section at the Cobar cemetery.

Pre-poll voting is now open in Cobar

NSW Electoral Commissioner John Schmidt is reminding local residents that voting is compulsory for all enrolled electors in NSW. Mr Schmidt said now is the time to plan when, where and how to vote in the upcoming State election.

“There are penalties for failing to vote.

“One of the best ways to plan your vote is by using the Find my electorate tool on the NSW Electoral Commission website.

“This is an easy way to find information relating to your electorate, nearest voting or early voting centre and opening times, candidates and more, all in one place.”

Records broken with extreme heat

Hard work and some fun

The unseasonal extreme heat we’ve been experiencing over the past week has been record breaking with the Bureau of Meteorology reporting Sunday’s top temperature of 42.3 degrees is a record for this time of the year.

According to Weatherzone (which uses data from the Bureau), this is almost one degree more than the highest temperature on record for this time of year of 41.5 degrees, which was recorded in March 2007.

One local landholder registered a much higher temperature on Sunday with the Maxwells of Dine Downs (in the far south of the shire) reporting their thermometer reached a sweltering 45.6 degrees!

Take a ramble down memory lane There’s a new activity for local seniors to take part in during Seniors Week this year with the Cobar Shire Library staff inviting seniors to ‘Ramble Down Memory Lane’ with them.

Librarian Jane Siermans said seniors are invited to go along for morning tea and to look over the library’s extensive collection of local newspapers next Tuesday.

“As well as physical copies of The Cobar Weekly, we also have the Cobar Age and other Cobar newspapers on microfilm,” Jane said.

“There are a wealth of interesting topics for discussion - from exciting historic events to the price of basic commodities at the time.

“I’ve recently had a look at 1906 and 1969 papers and found news on the death of Queen Victoria and the establishment of art classes for adults at the high school.

“The basic cycle of news is very similar all through the years – politics, rain/drought, and sport.

“The social news in the papers is fascinating!” Jane said.

“The prices in 1969 at Cobar Supermarket were 32 cents for Vita Brits and Cottees jelly crystals were selling for three for 22 cents – quite a bargain!”

Jane said the aim is for it to be a relaxed morning where seniors can share their memories and enjoy a cup of tea.

“Anyone who comes along is also very welcome to bring a photo album (or two) of their memories to share.”

Jane said she’ll be guided by the attendees as to which dates they are interested in and see what the papers had to say.

“It is possible that we would be able to find people’s wedding or birth announcements (fingers crossed),” she said.

In addition to the Ramble Down Memory Lane morning tea, seniors will also be able to paint pots with local artist Seigrid Peters, enjoy a gala dinner with entertainment by John Peebles and the Copper City Dance Centre dancers, have a guided tour of the museum or try their hand at bingo and board games at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre.

Fight Night aims to settle “unfinished business” Two Australian boxing titles, a NSW Country title and a Western Region title will all be decided at the Cobar Fight Night on April 1.

Troy Richards from The Shed Boxing Club based in Nyngan (which has a number of Cobar boxers as members), said the Fight Night at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club (which sold out yesterday) has been dubbed as an event to settle some “unfinished business”.

Richards has 16 boxers from his club competing at Cobar’s Fight Night in a range of different weight divisions. One of them is Sonny Knight, who will be fighting in the Main Event, the Australian Light Middleweight title.

“The boxers competing come from all over NSW. They all range from what you call novice boxers through to intermediate and open boxers and will fight all weights and divisions from flyweight to the super heavyweight,” Richards explained.

Among them are Cobar fighters Tom McBride, Ashton Dietrich, Vincent Willis, Tyler Coughlan, Tommy Bryan and Charlie Crotty.

In addition to Sonny Knight fighting for the Australian Title, The Shed Boxing Club’s Daniel Nash will be competing for a Western region welterweight title and Will Richards is fighting for a NSW Country Western region title.

“There’s also two bouts for the females with fighters from Dubbo and Newcastle, but no local girls competing.

“The ‘Unfinished Business’ title refers to a couple of things,” Richards said.

“Sonny got robbed in the Australian titles last year in Melbourne.

“I know that sounds a bit biased but he actually did get robbed completely and the fact that I’ve had to cancel the last two Cobar fight shows for things out of my hands, is also referring to unfinished business.”

Richards said Australian Boxing have taken on board his complaint about the inequality his western area fighters have received.

He said in the past Australian Boxing have allowed other boxing events to be held on the same night which makes it very hard for him to draw quality, competitive boxers out west.

“If they get a choice to go up the coast or to Sydney or to Bathurst, they’re not going to come all the way out to Nyngan or Cobar.

“Cobar’s now the only boxing event in NSW that’s being held on the 1st of April,” he said.

“To put on an amateur fight night in Cobar you’re looking at $26,000-$28,000—some of that comes from sponsorship and some of that comes out of my own pocket.

“I pay for all their [the boxers] fuel, their food and accommodation,” he said.

“I’ve got to really look after them. I’ve got a good reputation for Fight Night and looking after people because I just know living out here in the bush, if you don’t they just wont come back.

“The Cobar community always gives me heaps of support” he said.

And that support is evident with Cobar’s Fight Night tickets already sold out!

Calls for urgent action as feral pig numbers spike

NSW Farmers has reported an explosion in feral pig numbers on public lands in the north and west of the state has resulted in massive damage to properties and livestock.

The association reports that despite more than 34,000 hoofed feral animals – including pigs, deer and goats – being culled across the state since November, the feral pig population was still enormous.

NSW Farmers member Peter Mailler reports he’s still seeing them run across his front lawn at North Star, and he said they presented a huge biosecurity risk if not controlled.

“They’re doing enormous damage to property and the numbers are as bad as I’ve ever seen them,” Mr Mailler said.

“We need effective pest control management plans with the resources and commitment of all parties to tackle feral pests and weeds so we can get on top of them and stay on top of them.

“Farmers can’t do this individually – pigs and other pests don’t respect property boundaries, the state needs to ramp up efforts and do the job properly.”

According to the NSW Government, feral pigs were a “key threatening process” as they spread weeds and disease, hunt native animals and damage the environment.

They also pose a problem for farmers as they prey on newborn lambs, eat and destroy grain crops and pastures, and damage fences.

Bronwyn Petrie from the NSW Farmers Conservation and Resource Management Committee said while farmers were active in trying to control pest animals and weeds on their properties, a lack of effective control on public lands was undermining their efforts.

“Farmers know that’s where the pigs are breeding because we see them coming onto our farms from public lands,” Mrs Petrie said.

“Yet over the past seven years there hasn’t been a single prosecution on public land managers for animal pests.

“Unless there is an urgent and coordinated control effort on all land – public and private – this problem will only get worse.”

Steps are being taken in the western area to cull numbers with the Central West Local Land Services currently conducting a feral pig baiting program east of Cobar.

AUTOMINE SPECIALIST CSA Mine, Cobar, NSW Job Ref: CSA0900 CSA Mine is looking for an experienced AutoMine Specialist to provide technical support and service our Sandvik AutoMine system, including loader fleet and equipment/hardware support. This role will see you developing your technical competencies and assist in training other team members on the installation, servicing, and maintenance of the system. The role is technical/equipment focused and will have you providing guidance, implementation/ technical support/repairs and advice on the implementation and strategies for the AutoMine equipment.

About the role: • Develop and organise Automation support for AutoMine technical, repairs and training for workshop personnel • Provide technical support and training to the service network and workshops on operation, maintenance and troubleshooting practices • Provide feedback to Sandvik site PSA’s and Sandvik Automation in compiling accurate data to process warranty claims and engineering machine improvements • Review spare parts recommendations and develop accuracy of Machine Life Operating Costs (MLOC) • Create store stock max/mins and submit to stores for addition to site stock • Work to develop system project plans, project schedules and commissioning activities • Perform equipment installations and commissioning • Assist with the development and implementation of preventative maintenance schedules for AutoMine fitted equipment and infrastructure

The successful applicant will have: • A relevant Auto Electrical trade qualification • Previous experience with RCT or Sandvik AutoMine • Current Australian Manual Driver's Licence • Underground mechanical maintenance experience in mobile fleet, including but not limited to: Sandvik, Epiroc and Caterpillar equipment • Competency to remove, dismantle, diagnose faults, reassemble, test, and return equipment to service • Understanding of equipment and stores systems will be highly regarded • A high commitment to a positive safety culture Conditions This is a 7/7 roster, commute options include residential, DIDO or FIFO (Brisbane, Queensland or Sydney, New South Wales) with meals and accommodation supplied. Chilli Steppers stepped their way to line multiple times The Red Hot Chilli Steppers did plenty of stepping to the try line in their big 23-2 win over the Gold Bars in their Round 7 Open Mixed Touch competition game last week at Ward Oval.

Anita Atuau and Tia Turner stepped their way to the line to score three times each, Olivia Deighton and Jack Brown scored doubles, and Neve Carter, Gerald Mackey and Riki Schaumkell also crossed for a try each to help their side to a win.

Atuau and Turner shared in the referee’s Best & Fairest points along with Gold Bars’ lone try scorer, Kimberlie Sariman.

Phat Athletes recorded an upset win last week beating last season’s grand final winners, DC & C Barracudas, 12-10.

Barracudas may have scored 10 tries to Phat Athletes’ tally of seven, but it was the female try tally that made the difference to the final score. (Female tries are worth double points.)

All 10 of the Barracudas’ tries were scored by their male players while five of Phat Athletes’ seven tries were scored by their female players.

Yabbies win 10 Man title at Nationals

The Cobar Yabbies 10 Man relay team of Andy Thomas, Bob Clark, Bill Fugar, Wayne Rice, Paul Swainston, Chris Powell, Greg Dimond, Scott Toomey, Tyler Roberts and Kyle Roberts won the Ivo Watt 10 x 50metres Memorial Relay at the 2023 AIF National Swimming Carnival in Coogee on Saturday.
