Water pipeline project one step closer Youth arrested over stabbing The Nyngan to Cobar Pump Station and Pipeline project is one step closer to delivery after SMEC Australia was awarded the contract to carry out the concept design work.

Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson said SMEC has more than 70 years of experience delivering major infrastructure projects around the world and a proven track record in delivering projects in areas like Cobar.

“This is a significant milestone for the Nyngan to Cobar project and shows significant progress in getting this project finished.

“SMEC’s first class engineers taking on the design for this project is a major win for the community,” Mr Anderson said.

“We have already locked-in funding to deliver pump stations at Cobar, Hermidale and Nyngan thanks to a partnership with the Australian Government and we are working hard to get shovels in the ground as quickly as possible.”

NSW Nationals Upper House MP Sam Farraway said the engineers will begin by developing a concept design for the new pipeline from Nyngan to Cobar.

“Cobar is one of the driest locations in Barwon but also one of the most productive, with a thriving mining and agricultural industry that employs thousands of people,” Mr Farraway said.

“I am pleased to see this project in its final stage of development because it will play a critical role in securing the long-term water supply that is required to support the region’s economic growth.

“The NSW Liberals and Nationals are delivering new pump stations that will be larger to cater for an increase in demand and will use the latest technology to regulate flow and pressure as water travels the 130 kilometres from the Bogan Weir pools at Nyngan to Cobar.”

The project team has commenced environmental studies, and cultural heritage investigations are planned to be carried out in early 2023.

A 16 year old youth has been charged following the stabbing of a Cobar man on December 11.

Following an investigation by Central North Police District detectives into the incident that occurred in Murray Street on Sunday December 11, when a 34 year old male was stabbed three times, the 16 year old male was charged last week and issued with a Court Attendance Notice to attend Narromine Children’s Court in February 2023 for the offence of ‘Wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm’.

During the incident, it’s alleged the victim was stabbed three times at his home.

He was taken to Cobar Hospital and then flown to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for surgery after suffering wounds to his left arm, shoulder and back.

Weather looks good for Christmas Day The weather in Cobar on Christmas Day is looking like it will be ideal with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a sunny day with a top of 34 degrees.

After a week of mild days we can expect temperatures to creep back up into the 30’s this coming week with 32 degrees the predicted top today.

The Bureau is predicting a very high chance of up to 10mm of rain to fall tomorrow while there's just a slight chance of a shower on Friday with both days predicted to reach a maximum of 30 degrees.

Christmas Eve on Saturday should be a

warm and sunny day with the thermometer expected to reach a top of 32 degrees.

Boxing Day Monday is forecast to be hot and mostly sunny with 35 degrees the predicted top temperature.

Last weekend was balmy with 29.3 degrees the recorded top on Sunday while 29.5 was the maximum daytime temperature on Saturday.

Friday reached a top of 26.5 and Thursday was 22.7 degrees which, according to the Bureau, is Cobar’s lowest recorded daytime temperature so far this month.

Monday’s mercury reached 28.6 degrees.

Parkrun weekly event will keep on running in Cobar Parkrun will continue in Cobar after the event was cancelled earlier this month due to a lack of volunteers willing to take on official roles.

Cobar’s Parkrun event is part of a global community movement that encourages people to get out and get active and walk or run 5km each Saturday morning.

The first Parkrun event in Cobar was held in May 2018 at the Newey, organised by then local resident, Tanya Gilbert, with 58 runners and walkers taking part.

It was the 307th Parkrun event to launch in Australia (there’s now 457 weekly events across Australia and more than 2,000 events running in 23 countries across six continents) with Cobar holding its 100th Parkrun in March last year.

Parkrun was cancelled in Cobar earlier this month due to a lack of volunteers.

Each event requires five volunteer officials to act as run director, timekeeper, scanner, halfway marshal and tail-walker.

A former Parkrun director, Amie Hill, who took over the role from Tanya Gilbert, said she was disappointed when she heard the news that Parkrun was being cancelled.

Amie called a meeting last Saturday in an effort to sign up more volunteers to ensure the weekly event would continue.

“A lot of work went into setting it up and it’s a great thing for the town,” Amie said.

“We get a lot of tourists passing through coming to Parkrun and we also get people travelling to Cobar specifically to participate in Parkrun as part of the Seven C’s challenge [where they compete at seven different Parkrun events starting with the letter ‘c’].”

At Saturday’s meeting, Trudy Griffiths put her hand up to take on the Cobar run director’s role.

“Ultimately because I didn’t want to see it fold,” Trudy told The Cobar Weekly.

“It’s a community event that I think we can grow and expand on.

“I registered in 2018 and haven’t been that

active but it’s an event that I don’t want to see us lose,” she said.

Amie said she was thrilled Trudy has taken on the organiser’s role and is happy to support Trudy and the event going forward.

The meeting discussed ways to get more locals and local groups involved in helping out and also participating.

“Residents are advised that the asbestos containing material on the contaminated site is currently low risk to public health unless it continues to be disturbed,” Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko advised.

The Department of Planning and Environment – Crown Lands consulted Cobar Shire Council and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) on management of the asbestos.

They have been working with NSW Health, Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Police to manage the area which includes temporary warning signage.

Crown Lands Executive Director of Land and Asset Management, Greg Sullivan, said the installation of fencing will be the first step in an ongoing plan to restore the affected area.

“The presence of asbestos means part of the reserve has been considered unsafe for recreation but we hope to eventually remediate the area so it can once again be safely used by the community,” Mr Sullivan said.

“Kaloogleguy Reserve has many tracks throughout the reserve which are popular for walking, cycling, motor bikes and four-wheel driving, so we need to first start with securing and cleaning up the affected section.”

For more than 100 years, parts of Kaloogleguy Reserve had been gazetted as a landfill site for the town.

Farm tour to see ripping and ponding practices first hand NSW Department of Primary Industries and Western Local Land Services are working with Cobar farmers to help them rehydrate and revegetate their landscapes using deep ripping and ponding practices.

Scott Preisig and Belinda Blake at Merrylands north west of Cobar are among the group of farmers who are taking part in the project.

Scott and Belinda trialed several landscape modifications to rehabilitate and rejuvenate their property during the 2018/19 drought.

Despite tough climatic conditions they successfully brought productivity back to the areas. They have since partnered with DPI to extend the work.

The pair hosted a farm tour last week which gave other interested graziers the chance to talk to experts and see projects first-hand.

During the tour, Scott and Belinda spoke about the challenges they faced with their unproductive paddocks that were getting worse and about how having access to poor climatic records and data was not good for sound decision making.

Security course for licensed venues The Cobar Liquor Accord is working with the Office of Liquor & Gaming (OLGA) to assist with the running of a security course in Cobar that will be of benefit to all licensed venues.

Chairperson of Cobar Liquor Accord and licensee of the Cobar Service Club, Linda Carter said the matter was discussed at a recent Liquor Accord meeting via a virtual meeting with the OLGA Hospitality Concierge.

Mrs Carter said the course, which will be held early next year, will help all venues work towards having their own security, which should make it easier (and be a financial advantage) when hosting entertainment at their venues.

“At the meeting, discussions were also held on the barring of patrons from all venues and the impact it has on venues and licensees.

“There has been an increase in barred patrons in the past couple of months and bans range from warnings to life bans,” she said.

Ideally this is not what venues want but all are in agreeance that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated in their venues where the majority of customers go to have a good time.

“The Liquor Accord reiterates any drunken, verbal, physical or inappropriate sexual behaviour, or any aggression shown towards staff or emergency services will not be tolerated and can incur a life time ban from all premises, including local restaurants and bottle shops.”

The Cobar Liquor Accord is also reminding patrons to make a ‘Plan B’ over the festive period. They encourage motorists to make positive decisions when it comes to getting home safely after having a night out drinking.

Drink driving is a major cause of death and injury on roads in NSW. Making a plan before you go out of how you’re going to get home is the best ‘Plan B’ you can have.

For comparison, they also visited a new ripping site that had been sown with a multispecies mix in April/May this year.

Farm tour participants also visited sites that had been ponded in 2022, and saw AgTech equipment that had been installed to monitor on-site weather and water infiltration.

Cobar Public School was buzzing last week at bee talk Cobar Public School was buzzing last Monday when local beekeeper, Lil Garbutt, called in to speak to the students about bees.

Lil and her husband Mick run Garbamir Honey, a small family-owned apiary here in Cobar.

The students had been learning about bees at the school and one of the teachers approached Lil and asked if she might go along and talk to the children.

“I spoke about why bees are important to our environment and what a beekeeper does.

“Bees are a very underestimated creature,” Lil said.

“They are pollinators which play an extremely important role in the production of everything from flowers to fruit trees.

“I think it was important for the children to also know that the honey, beeswax, propolis and Royal Jelly they produce is beneficial to humans.”

Lil said beekeeping was an interest that ran in Mick’s family.

“Mick’s father is a retired beekeeper and Mick has always had an interest in wanting to keep bees himself.” Lil explained.

She bought Mick a hive four years ago as a birthday present and since then their bee yard has gradually increased in size each year.

Their crop of honey has also been increasing each year and Lil came up with a few ideas to make use of the excess honey and beeswax.

“My passion for gourmet food led me to developing a unique honey-based gelato and we also developed a natural body deodorant with the organic wax from the hives.

“These and several other products such as handmade biscotti, beeswax candles, wraps and lip balms are now being shipped to online customers Australia wide.”

Lil took along some of her products to the school talk and the students were able to try the honey and beeswax.

“They also tried on bee suits and received some bee pencils and some of our merchandise.

“I also took along 15 bee boxes which the children will paint.

“We will seal them and use them in the beehive.

“It will make a colourful display in the bee yard,” Lil said.

Motorists are advised double demerits will commence this Friday and will be in place for 11 days over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

NSW Police implore motorists to drive safely and take extra care on the roads during the holiday season to protect themselves, their loved ones and all road users.

During double demerit periods, double demerit points apply for speeding, illegal use of mobile phones, not wearing a seat belt and riding without a motorcycle helmet.

Mobile Phone Detection Cameras are active in NSW and the ACT and drivers caught using their phones during a double demerit period will be hit with a $352 fine ($469 in a school zone) and 10 demerits.

Exceeding the limit by less than 10km/hr will cost you a $123 fine and two demerit points; over 10km/hr and the fine is $285 and six points; over 20km/hr and you’ll be fined $489 and lose eight points; if you’re caught doing more than 30km/hr over the limit then you’ll cop a fine of $935 and forfeit 10 points; and you can say goodbye to your licence if you exceed the limit by over 45km/hr as you’ll lose 12 points and earn a fine of $2,520.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said alcohol and drug driving is a major concern for police, particularly over the festive season.

Assistant Commissioner McFadden said we all need to play a part in keeping our roads safe. “Don’t drink or take drugs and drive and have a ‘Plan B’ if you plan on having a few.”

Cheers to Christmas

Sheep and goat ID timeline decided The NSW Government has released its plan to roll out electronic identification (eID) for the state’s $1.5 billion farmed sheep and goat industries.

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders said the plan has been developed hand-in-hand with industry, ensuring a timeline that works for each sector.

“Biosecurity is a top priority for the NSW Government, and a mandatory electronic identification system for sheep and goats will be a critical part of delivering the animal traceability we need to respond quickly and effectively if we ever see an incursion of an emergency animal disease,” Mr Saunders said.

“This timeline works for our state’s producers, feedlotters, agents, saleyards and processors, which is crucial given the important role they will each play in the successful roll out.”

As part of the NSW Government’s commitment, sheep and farmed goats born after January 2025 will require an eID tag before leaving a property; and from January 2027 all farmed sheep and goats in NSW will require an eID tag. From June 2024, meat processors will be required to start scanning all farmed sheep and goats and from January 2025, scanning at saleyards will commence.

“I’m committed to providing NSW producers with the smoothest possible transition, while maintaining a strong focus on biosecurity. The open and honest feedback I’ve received from producers across NSW is that while they understand the need for traceability, there has been a concern about having to deal with new tags in too short a timeframe.

“My focus will continue to be on getting this right for everyone involved. That also includes a different pathway for wild-harvested rangeland goats, separate to managed and farmed goats, which is both achievable and considers the needs of the industry.”

Mr Saunders said work will continue across all sectors to determine what critical infrastructure is needed to support the implementation of a mandatory sheep and goat eID system, and how it will be funded.

“We still have some details to sort out at a state and national level, including the consideration of a national tag tender, and the upgrade of the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) database,” Mr Saunders said.

“I’ve already called on the Federal Labor Government to match the funding we’re putting on the table, and I’ll keep pushing for that support while we work closely with all key representative bodies sitting on our NSW Sheep and Goat Traceability Reference Group.”

• Tritton Mine, near Hermidale, is to benefit from Stream Two of the NSW Government’s $27 million investment to fund mining infrastructure projects and exploration for critical minerals in NSW. Tritton received $500,000 in Stream One (which Deputy Premier Paul Toole announced on his visit to Cobar last month) for a feasibility study for development of a future copper satellite mine (Constellation Mine). In the Stream Two recipients announced on Monday, funding has been allocated to an on-site demonstration plant for the recovery of critical minerals using NovaCell technology by Jord International at Hermidale.

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and reliable individual to join the Mill Processing team.

Narrow loss for Cobar Cowboys

Bananas record a brilliant win

Narromine defeated the Cobar Cowboys by 20 runs in the Brewery Shield senior cricket competition on Sunday.

The Cowboys were missing several key players for the match however after losing the toss, Cobar’s line-up bowled exceptionally well.

If you would have asked captain Jake Harbison before the match could Narromine be restricted to 8/153 off 50 overs? He would have said “probably not”.

All the Cobar bowlers bowled well.

The wicket takers were Jacob King 3/28, Slade Neale 2/17, Jason Hampel 2/18 and Nabeel Rashid 1/11.

Unfortunately, batting in reply Cobar was dismissed for 133.

Jake Harbison led from the front top scoring with 45 runs.

Summer of golf

Six golfers contested last Wednesday’s Men’s Golf summer competition Stableford event.

Peter ‘China’ Brien with 32 stableford points finished as the winner ahead of Max Phillips in second spot with 26 stableford points. Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Brien on the 7th hole and Ian Prendergast on the 15th.

Saturday’s Stableford competition attracted 15 players.

The consistent Bill Fugar with 35 stableford points finished as the winner with Bian Smith the runner-up on 31 stableford points. Back in third place was Mark Martin on 30 stableford points. Men’s Golf Captain Alec Fraser, with 29 stableford points, finished in 4th place.

Brad Bannister won both Nearest the Pin prizes on the 7th and 8th holes.

Only five players fronted the starter on Sunday with Bill Fugar, on 33 stableford points, once again finishing as the winner. No Nearest to the Pin prizes were won on the day.

The final of the Bill Bartlett Memorial Matchplay competition was played on Saturday, with Bian Smith the winner after defeating Alec Fraser 2 and 1.

The summer competition will continue during December and January with competitions teeing off at 9am Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.—Three Aces

The Touch juniors and adults competition grand finals were contested on Thursday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval with the match of the night played in the Juniors 9-12 years age division, which was eventually won by the Bananas (pictured above). After narrowly trailing at half time, the Bananas fought their way back into the game to level the scores at 4-all at full time and they sealed the victory with a try in extra time scored by Player of the Grand Final, George McDonald.

Yabbies continue to ham it up at pool The Cobar Yabbies are continuing to ham it up over the festive season and last Tuesday night’s ham winner was Dave Mexted.

Mexted finished with a total of 18 points from his three individual swims at last week’s competition to win a ham.

He won the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim, finished second in the 50m and was 3rd in 100m event.

The cool conditions were reflected in the times.

Mexted’s 0.18 seconds off his time in the 30m swim was the best in the field (in previous weeks, winners are usually under 0.10) while second place was Murray Harland on 0.35 and Bill Fugar was third with 0.38 seconds off his time.

Paul Swainston recorded the best time of the night when he finished within 0.03 seconds of

his nominated time to win the 50m swim.

Mexted had 0.09 for second place and Chris Powell was third on 0.25.

Fugar claimed first place in the 100m with 0.79 seconds off his time.

Powell was second (1.06) and Mexted was third on 1.21.

Tyler Roberts and Matt Harland teamed up to easily win the Brace Relay novelty event which involved swimming across the pool with a pool noodle between their legs.

The pair finished within a very close 0.04 seconds of their nominated time.

Swainston and Kyle Roberts were second (0.72) and Powell and Fugar finished in third place on 0.80.

Touch games showcased lots of skills and plenty of pace SpongeBobs eventually won the Junior 13-16 years Touch grand final, 10-7, on Thursday night at Tom Knight Memorial Oval in a fast-paced, high scoring match.

Referees Bianka Jacobson and Simone Neyland did well to keep up with the free-flowing match that showcased plenty of pace as well as excellent draw and pass touch skills from SpongeBobs and their Flamingoes opposition.

In a tit-for-tat first half, SpongeBobs went into the half time break with a one point advantage 6-5. SpongeBobs took control of the second half outpointing Flamingoes 4-2 to eventually finish with a three point win.

Presentations followed the game with Sophie Clark named the Player of the Grand Final after scoring two great tries in the match. Jaxon Burke, with a whopping total of

21 tries for the season (which didn’t include the four he scored in the grand final) and Sarah Morley with seven tries, were the Highest Male and Female Try Scorers this season.

The competition’s Best & Fairest players were Damon Bruce and Alora Deppeler.

The Junior 9-12 years grand final between the Bananas and the Red Rangas was without a doubt the match of the night.

After narrowly trailing 2-1 at half time, the Bananas fought back to level the score at 4-all by the time referees Emma Barton and Graham Barton blew full time.

Then the extra time drop-off process began with each team reducing their number of onfield players by one every two minutes. The teams got down to just three players each left on the field before a result was decided.

George McDonald proved to be the hero of the match when he scored the final try of the game (which was his 4th try of the match) and the one that sealed the win for the Bananas.

McDonald collected the Player of the Grand Final award with the referees praising his skill, sportsmanship and willingness to share the ball around with his team mates. He was well supported by Harpa Martin, Lucas Townsend and Alfie Toomey (who scored a great diving try to help the Bananas to their win).

Red Rangas were well served by their try scorers Mason King (2) and Ella Oborn.

Ella Oborn and Harpa Martin tied for Most Tries scored by the girls this season with nine each while George McDonald, with a huge tally of 18 tries, collected the Most Tries trophy for the boys. Golfie hosts a whopping field of bowlers Cobar Memorial A whopping field of 27 social bowlers thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the Golfie greens on Sunday.

Bian Smith, John ‘Shark’ Daly and Jim Goonrey were the outright winners on +13 after they beat Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond, Shane Carter and Tony Polack.

The scorecard revealed that team Smith had hit the greens running from the get go!

David ‘Ooze’ Knight, David Schofield and Allan Gardoll were the runners-up on a count back after finishing with a +12 win against Don Roberts, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and visitor Robert Renkin (Bramble Bay).

The turning point of the game came on the 7th end with Knight’s team claiming a +6 advantage.

Pairs team mates Doug Hudson and Tadgh Waugh’s seven point advantage on the 14th end secured their win of +12 against Peter ‘China’ Brien and David Thomas.

The triples game with Michael Sargent, his grandson Jaxon Waugh and Helen Boddy (playing double lead) up against Greg Read, Karen Daly and Boddy, looked like being a slam dunk for team Sargent who were at one stage 15 shots up (thanks to Jaxon’s impressive bowling).

The match however eventually ended in a draw.

Twilight Bowls on Friday also drew a sizeable field of 18 players, which included a number of new faces.

Romping home with a +14 score to win the night outright were Don Roberts and Karen Daly who took on and beat Tony Polack and newby Dan Restall.

Rink 9’s triples match winners by a margin of +9 were David ‘Ooze’ Knight, Peter ‘China’ Brien and newcomer Isla Carter.

Their opponents were John ‘Shark’ Daly and more new players Hamish Cowley and Scott McMenemy.

Allan Gardoll and Greg Read’s half time lead of +6 was soon reduced to +1 by Narelle Kriz and Bian Smith, however, Read/Gardoll managed to hold on to eventually win that match by a narrow margin of +3.

Kyle Roberts and Greg Clark dominated their game on rink 8 up against Steve Manns and Kelly Beard. Roberts and Clark finished the night with a +6 win.

The Jackpot prize was not won and has jackpotted again.

Bowlers will have the opportunity to keep their skills honed over the Christmas holiday period with social bowls to be continued to be played each Sunday morning (excluding Christmas Day). More social bowls events will take place on Boxing Day and also on Australia Day.—The Second

DJW Dingoes turn out in force to take B Grade title The DJW Dingoes not only outnumbered their Rusty Snails opposition in last Thursday night’s B Grade Adults Mixed Touch grand final, they also outplayed them, with DJW Dingoes winning by a big margin of 17-2.

The end of season decider was one of four Touch matches played at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Thursday night.

It followed two junior games and was a precursor to the A Grade match which was won by DC & C Barracudas. (See match reports from these games on Pages 20 and 16.)

With just one sub for the game, the Rusty Snails did well for the first half to match the DJW Dingoes who had subs aplenty on their interchange bench.

The margin at half time was 4-0 in the Dingoes’ favour after Jack Barnes, Jarrod Blake, Tyler Coughlan and Jay Ellison crossed to score a try each.

The second half was however a completely different story with DJW Dingoes running away to add another 13 points to the score board through tries to Laura Barnes, Bella Coughlan, Jayde George, Bethany Smith, Lochlan Ford and Haymish McLeod (3) whike Ellison also crossed for his second try of the match.

Alec Fraser and Ben McBride scored consolation tries for the Rusty Snails.

Skyla Fairfull finished as the handicap winner after recording personal best (PB) times in her ride and run legs to shave off more than five minutes on her previous best result in the

Short Course (300m swim/10km ride/2km run).

Khan Fugar, with PBs in his swim and run legs, bettered his previous best time by eight seconds to finish second in the handicap and third place was filled by Team Knee Hi Tri (Amanda Hyland and Greg McKervey) after Hyland improved on their run time.

Three other PBs were recorded on the day by Zach Finn, Axel Fairfull and Chris Powell.

After finishing the Adults Mixed Touch competition as minor premiers, the DC & C Barracudas went into Thursday night’s A Grade grand final as the favourites.

The favourites were however a bit surprised with the fight they got from the young third placed, The Butchers team, and there was just one try the difference at fulltime.

DC & C Barracudas won 6-2 and the difference in the scores was that all three of the Barracudas’ tries were scored by their female players (with female tries worth double points) while it was the males who scored The Butchers’ points.

Both sides put up strong defence and the match was 12 minutes old before Brennah Aumua opened the scoring for the Barracudas with a try out wide on the wing.

Not long after Tommy Bryan slipped through the Barracudas’ defence to score for The Butchers and narrow the margin to 2-1 at the halftime break.

Soon after the re-start Aumua scored again on the wing after receiving a brilliant cut out pass sent wide by Barracudas’ Tom McKenna after some razzle dazzle play in the centre.

Aisha Scofield sealed the Barracudas’ win late in the game when she crossed after she was left unmarked on the wing.

The Butchers’ attackers continued to test the Barracudas’ defence and Fraser Talu eventually scored a late consolation try.

Barracudas’ playmaker, Brianna Watson was named Player of the Grand Final.

The season’s highest try scorers were Aisha Schofield (female) with 12 tries and Jack Brown (male) with 11.

The Best & Fairest Players of the season were Kai Taylor (male) and there was a three -way tie for the females between Brianna Watson, Nicola Harbison and Sarah Morley.
