Local punters, horse owners and trainer Wayne ‘Wap’ Prisk all had a brilliant day at the Cobar Picnic Races meeting on Saturday at the Dalton Park Racecourse. Prisk’s stable celebrated three wins for the day, including Dancing In The Sky winning the DJW and Wells Ventilation Cobar Picnic Cup. It was Dancing In The Sky’s second win at home this year after winning the WesTrac Cobar Cup in June. (See page 15 for a full report from the meeting.) And while the Cobar Miner’s Race Club didn’t offer a Fashions on the Field competition at this meeting, locals however took the opportunity to dress up for the races.

Drilling success at Bulla Park

Commemorating Howie

West Cobar Metals announced last week they had successfully completed their latest diamond drilling program at their Bulla Park Copper Project west of Cobar.

The program consisted of two diamond drill holes totalling 547 metres.

One of the holes successfully intersected a broad zone of disseminated sulphides with samples now being cut and prepared for assay.

The results of the assay are expected to be received next month.

With additional information derived from logging and drill assays, the company will then assess the Bulla Park Project with the view of further drilling to extend the major zone of thick disseminated copper-antimony mineralization.

Driving with a low range PCA Fire & Rescue NSW held two commemorative ceremonies on Saturday to honour the life of firefighter Daniel ‘Howie’ Howard on the 10th anniversary of his death fighting a fire at the New Occidental Hotel on August 17 2014. Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell (pictured above with Daniel’s parents, Genevieve and Jeff) said it was a day to remember, honour and pay respect to the contribution that Daniel had made to the community. “Daniel’s bravery and service to his local community will never be forgotten,” Commissioner Fewtrell said.

A 25 year old female driver returned a positive reading for alcohol when she was stopped by police on Friday night for a random breath test.

The Cobar woman was pulled over in Louth Road at 8.10pm and underwent a roadside breath test.

After giving a positive result to alcohol, she was arrested and conveyed to Cobar Police Station for the purpose of a breath analysis.

As a result, the driver was issued with an infringement notice for Drive with Low Range PCA.

Cause of house fire undetermined Cobar firefighters were called to a house fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Fire & Rescue NSW Station 256 brigade captain Alex Lennon reports they received a call just before 1am on Sunday morning that a vacant house in Becker Street was on fire.

“We arrived on scene at 1.04am and found the house well alight.

“We gained control quite quickly with the help of Cobar Rural Fire Brigade and had the fire extinguished by 2.10am,” Captain Lennon said.

Peter Florance has lived in Cobar for more than 20 years and said it’s one of the best places he’s ever lived.

“This is where I plan to stop,” he said.

“I can assure you it is with no pride I take a seat in an uncontested election.

“Still, I’ll do the job and hope I can make someone somewhere during my term feel connected with council,” Mr Florance said.

Having served on numerous committees including the Cobar Arts Council and as Cobar’s representative to Outback Arts, and having previously run the Cobar Cinema and Cobar Community Radio, Mr Florance said he “may not be overly prepared for council but I know committees and communities and will do my best”.

A 32 year old Cobar woman will appear at Cobar Local Court after she was pulled over by police on Saturday afternoon and found to have a suspended driver’s licence.

The woman was stopped by police at around 4pm in Kurrajong Circle and enquiries revealed that the driver had a suspended drivers licence.

She was issued with a Court Attendance Notice for the offence of Drive motor vehicle while licence suspended.

Extension for 3G

Telstra and Optus have both announced they will extend the closure of their 3G networks until the end of October 2024 to provide extra time for all Australians to be ready to move to 4G and 5G. Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton welcomed the extension and said it will enable the two telcos to conduct one last public safety awareness campaign.

He said this would ensure anyone who still depends on the 3G network for connectivity is aware of the actions they need to take to stay connected ahead of the network closure.

“I think this is a sensible move,” Mr Coulton said.

“It’s not just about the telcos being ready, but there’s still a large number of people who will be impacted who have not yet upgraded their own handsets and devices.

“There are many non-mobile devices that use the 3G network, including medical monitors, EFTPOS machines, baby monitors, tracking equipment and more,” he said.

If you’ve got older equipment you need to be proactive and upgrade it now, or you risk losing connectivity after October.

If you are unsure if you’re impacted, text ‘3’ to ‘3498’ and the response will let you know if you need to take action.

Cobar Residents can pack away the winter woolies with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a very warm week ahead with the temperature expected to reach a top of 29 degrees on Sunday.

A pleasant 22 degrees is expected today with a top of 23 predicted for tomorrow and Friday.

The Bureau advises there’s a slight chance of rain both tomorrow and Friday.

Saturday is also predicted to be a very warm day with 27 degrees the expected maximum.

The forecast for Monday is the same, with 27 degrees the expected top temperature.

Cobar received some rain over the past week with a total of 13.6mm recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology.

The Bureau’s records show we received 11.8mm on Wednesday, 0.2mm on Thursday, 0.4mm on Friday, 1mm on Saturday and 0.2mm on Sunday.

Temperatures over the past week were mostly above average with 19.3 degrees the maximum recorded last Wednesday; it reached 20.9 on Thursday; 22.3 was the top on Friday; Saturday’s high was 18.1; and it dropped to 17.3 degrees on Sunday.

Monday reached a pleasant 20.1 degrees.

Stolen vehicles were recovered

Police have recovered two vehicles that were stolen from a motel in Cobar last week.

A white Toyota Hilux and white Toyota Land Cruiser were stolen in the early hours of last Monday from the Crossroads Motel and both were recovered in Lake Cargelligo the following day.

Mick Haines is well known in the Cobar community having served as the president of the Cobar Dust Bowl Fuel Burners for the past 13 years.

“I am passionate about the local community and would like to see the town grow and prosper,” he said Mr Haines believes his previous experience in management and training along with being a hard worker, someone who is compassionate and a good listener will help him in his role as a councillor.

“Priorities for council should be encouraging tourism, having a reliable water supply, encouraging people to live in Cobar and support the town that they work in, having affordable housing and making Cobar a place where people would like to live or spend a few days exploring on their holidays,” Mr Haines said.

Nigel Vagg grew up on the family property between Ivanhoe and Cobar and although his work sometimes takes him away, the property remains his permanent base.

Mr Vagg said a friend suggested a few years ago that he should run for council.

“Since then, I have increasingly thought it is important that the shire be represented by councillors from all parts of its geographical coverage; hence my decision to stand at this election. I believe that my years of living and working in the area have given me a broad understanding of local issues, particularly those of non-urban ratepayers and residents within the shire.

“I hope the incoming Council will continue the work of the previous administrations; that is, to strive to serve its constituents in all their needs, recognising that the exact nature of these may continue to evolve as technologies and funding models also change with the passage of time,” Mr Vagg said.

Wayne Phillips has been in Cobar for about eight years after purchasing a property between Cobar and Louth. He also owns a home in town and the old Masonic Hall where he conducts rock and roll dance classes.

“I have a bit of history of having been in Local Government previously [in Victoria] so I know how it works,” Mr Phillips said.

“I’d like to offer sort of a different point of view to what I’ve been seeing around the place. I enjoy working for the community, achieving things.

“I always think life is about common sense so, I certainly hope to bring common sense decision making for the majority of the people in Cobar. As far as experience—I’ve been a business man and I’ve worked for myself.

“I think I’m a good team player and I think I’ll make a fairly good contribution,” he said.

Bill Fugar cleans up at this season’s Yabbies presentations Bill Fugar collected the Curly Solomon Shield as the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club’s 2023/2024 Overall Club Point Score champion at the club’s end of season presentations on Friday night at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.

Fugar cleaned up this season and also won the 30m Cobar Bowling & Golf Club Shield, the 50m Russell Harland Memorial Shield and the 100m Phil Knuckey Memorial Shield.

Not letting him have it all his way, Todd Fugar claimed the Ian Settree Memorial One Night Stand trophy.

Todd had the best combined time in one night of the season with a total of just 0.29 seconds off his nominated time in all three events.

The Brace Relay prize went to Kyle Roberts and the Tom Knight Memorial – Most Improved Swimmer trophy was earned by Stephen Clark (who recorded 2nd and 3rd places at the 2024 National AIF Carnival).

In addition to their weekly competition, the club also competed this season at the Four Way Swim at Gosford, hosted Nyngan for the Setts Swim, contested the Western District AIF Carnival in Dubbo and competed in the National AIF Carnival at Southport.

The big guns were brought out last week at the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s 25m Sports and Centre Fire Sports event.

There was some interesting groupings and lower than expected scores.

Michael Garbutt shot 390 off pistol and, coupled with his handicap of 62, finished with a total of 452.

Other scores were: Geoff Clayton 346/170/516; Lidija Garbutt 264/142/406; Tracey Lawrence 199/263/462; Geoff Passfield 169/350/519; Anita Neate 160/253/413; and John Woloczij scored 282/350/632 and earned a new handicap of 286.

Prisk wins second feature race with Dancing In The Sky Local trainer Wayne Prisk has now won the two feature races for 2024 at Cobar with the same horse, Dancing In The Sky. Nyssa Burrells travelled from the southern highlands in June to win the WesTrac Cobar Cup on Dancing In The Sky and on Saturday, the Narromine-based Ricky Blewitt was the winning jockey in the DJW and Wells Ventilation Cobar Picnic Cup. Making the Cup win even more special on Saturday, Prisk landed a winning treble for the day with his other winners being Parnassus and Rylstone Rocket.

This was a popular achievement as Prisk is a great supporter of western area racing, regularly travelling long distances to start big teams at meetings.

Penique set the early pace in the 1,700 metres Picnic Cup until Dancing In The Sky took over at the 1,200 metres and proceeded to make the race a one act affair.

Owned by Prisk and Butch Eves, Dancing In The Sky (Blewitt, $3.50) won by nearly four lengths from Valadyium (Leandro Ribeiro, $3.20 favourite) and Eaglesaurus (Eloise Drews, $5.50).

Rylstone Rocket ($10) is also raced by Prisk and Eves and with Gilgandra-based Zara Lewis in the saddle came from fourth to beat Mista Sock (Todd Bailey, $7) and Oojah Capow (Blewitt, $2.30 favourite) in the 1,400 metres Sullivans Mining and Industrial Class B Handicap.

Part owned by the trainer’s son Geoff Prisk, Parnassus (Deborah Barton, $5) gave a taste of the good things to come for the stable when sweeping around the field to beat the leader La Magia (Izzy Neale, $2.20 favourite) and Kitty’s Pledge (Lewis, $13) to win the opening event, the 1,000 metres Cobar Cranes and Tyre Doctor Maiden Plate.

Cobar teams make their mark at Nyngan Gala Day The Cobar Junior Soccer Club took five teams to contest the Gala Day on Saturday at Nyngan.

Two Cobar Mids teams, two Minis teams and a Seniors team (ages 12 to 16) competed against teams from Nyngan, Tottenham, Warren and Bourke.

The Seniors team won their matches against Nyngan 5-0 and Warren 3-2, but lost their last game to Tottenham 3-8.

Standout players for Seniors were winger Mark Hibbert, who punched home a few great goals and Joseph Theakston, their goal keeper.

Ashley Compton also scored a great goal.

The Mids Cobar 1 team (Orange Tigers) won two of their games (Warren 4-1 and Nyngan 7-0) and drew 2-all with Tottenham.

Mids Cobar 2 (Black Knights) won all their games, Nyngan 5-0; Warren 5-0 and Tottenham 2-0.

All the Mids players had a great run with Alfie Toomey and Callum Bennett their standout players.

The Cobar 1 Minis team won their match against Tottenham 6-0; beat Nyngan 2-1 and also Warren 4-0. They only lost to Bourke 2-3 in a close encounter.

The Cobar 2 Minis team won 2-0 against Tottenham, and also had a 2-0 victory over Warren.

They narrowly lost to Nyngan 0-1 and went down against Bourke 0-4.

Best on the field the Minis teams were Zane Ntamuhanga, Jack Joss, Oliver Tranter and Cobar’s Black Knights Mids 2 team (pictured above) won all of their three matches in Archer Fugar.

Cobar Roosters Youth League side travelled to Dunedoo on Saturday to play the Gulgong Terries to get into the Castlereagh grand final.

Local hotshot Reece Josephson was a standout in the game scoring too many tries to count!

Jayden Greenwood played his normal game of footy by rolling up the middle doing all the hard work for his Roosters side.

It was a day for the stick figures to shine with Kai Taylor and Nathan Kelly showing what 37kg of pure skin and bone can do against their more meaty Gulgong opponents.

Credit also goes to the Irish imported brothers Oisin and Tadgh McMullen for steering the boys around the middle of the park.

The game was very much controlled by the Cobar Roosters for most of the match until the last quarter when Gulgong started their comeback building momentum and narrowing the score 22-12.

Cobar’s attack started to slow until Tadgh McMullen stripped the ball from a Gulgong player and motored 50 metres down field to give the Cobar boys some motivation.

Aiden Swan said “Sit down Greenwood, I want the ball” and put his head down like a boar pig and muscled his way over to put the game out of reach of Gulgong’s dream comeback.

Tadgh converted to seal their grand final position with a nice 28-12 win.—Dido

Roosters bring the grand final home G’day sports fans.

Castlereagh Rugby League’s First Grade major semi final between the Coolah Roos and Cobar Roosters on Saturday, was the game you have all been waiting for.

And it did not disappoint with the top two teams on the ladder hitting it out to see who would claim the home grand final with our Roosters eventually coming out 22-18 victors.

It was the Coolah Roos’ first year back in the competition and they finished the regular season undefeated and relegated the Cobar Roosters (who have been a top runner in the competition since joining) to the No 2 spot.

The match was to have been played at Coolah however was moved to Dunedoo after the oval at Coolah was deemed too wet to play on.

Both teams came out very strong in Saturday’s game and from where I was watching the game, the Roos were slightly winning the battle in the middle after Cobar had two early injuries with Ashley Davis and Jayden Potts leaving the field. The final event of the weekend was the 15 Pair Double Rise Championship with Matt Schiller the Overall winner with 30/30.

Matt Harland won A Grade with 46/50, Dick Tulloh won C Grade with 26/30 and Christie Wheeler was second with 25/30.

Will Crawford was the NSW Junior Masters Champion with a score of 147/150, dropping only three targets over three events.
