CSA Mine’s new owners take over

Glencore’s sale of Cobar’s CSA Mine was finalised on Friday with new owners MAC (Metals Acquisition Corp) personnel arriving on site on Friday afternoon to brief staff and contractors about what changes will take place as a result of the sale. MAC CEO Mick McMullen and other MAC board members will be on site up until shift change today communicating the changes to all personnel.

Mr McMullen spoke with The Cobar Weekly on Monday and said the changeover process had been running smoothly. See Pages 3 and 4 for more information about the sale and expected changes at the mine including the appointment of a new general manager.

There will however be no toilet facilities, water or power available on the site.

Demi said Council was aware that caravan/ camping visitor numbers to Cobar was increasing and appreciated the economic benefits they brought to the town and the shire.

She said Council is also in the process of forward planning as it’s expected visitor numbers will blow out further in August on their way to and from the Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill. Glencore, who has owned the mine since 1999, received USD$775 million in cash and USD$100 million in shares (Glenore will hold 20.6 per cent of shares in MAC) in the sale.

The transaction also included USD$75 million deferred payment to be paid within 12 months, USD$150 million contingent payment on future copper prices and a 1.5 per cent life of mine Net Smelter Return royalty.

MAC has now assumed ownership and taken full control of the running of the mine.

MAC’s CEO Mick McMullen, who was in Cobar when the sale was finalised, sat down with The Cobar Weekly on Monday to talk about their future plans and the immediate changes that are taking place.

The Coonamble-born CEO, who has 29 years experience in various facets of the mining industry, knows the Cobar basin well.

He said he has had an interest in the area, and in particular the CSA Mine, for some years.

Mr McMullen was thrilled when the long sale process was finalised on Friday.

“This is a phenomenal ore body.

“It’s had a 5-6 year reserve life since 1967.

Mr McMullen said while there are no real plans for staff restructuring, the mine’s current General Manager, Glencore’s Peter Christen, will be seconded for three months for the handover process to the new GM, Robert Walker.

“Everyone else is employed by CMPL [Cobar Management P/L] and we bought CMPL so everybody is on the same contracts,” Mr McMullen said.

He said some staff have asked about voluntary redundancies and there may be some

The big coats and warm jackets came out of our cupboards yesterday when the morning started off with a low of 1.4 degrees.

And they pretty much stayed on for the rest of the day as it only reached a top of 11.1 degrees (by the time we went to print yesterday afternoon).

Monday was cold too with a low of 1.5 degrees before reaching a top of 15.9 during the day.

It’s gradually been getting colder over the past week with 18.8 degrees the maximum recorded on both Friday and Saturday while Sunday’s maximum temperature was 15.7.

After an expected low of –1 degree overnight, the Bureau of Meteorology advised we can expect a slightly warmer day today with a predicted top of 15 degrees.

A low of seven is expected tomorrow before reaching a top of 17 during the day.

The Bureau is also predicting an 80 percent chance of up to 6mm of rainfall tomorrow.

Friday’s minimum temperature should also be seven degrees before reaching a maximum of 16 degrees during the day.

Saturday should be mostly sunny with a five degree start before reaching a top of 19 during the day.

Sunday is predicted to be our warmest day of the week with an expected maximum of 20 degrees after a minimum of seven overnight.

President of AgShows NSW, Peter Gooch, said while many shows are steeped in agricultural history (with the longest running country shows in the state dating back over 175 years including the Maitland, Kiama and Penrith Shows) this conference had a focus on the future.

“Agricultural shows have always been an integral part of Australian culture.

“These shows go a long way to boosting regional economies and strengthening the collective spirit of our communities and families,” Mr Gooch said.

“Our 192 agricultural shows are the backbone of their local communities.

“This is the event of the year for our members.

“And it’s an important time to come together after the impact of four years of natural disasters such as fires and floods, not to mention Covid lockdowns.”

The Cobar Iron Ringer committee was formed in 2021 with the aim of preserving the Iron Ringer identity.

The Iron Ringer term was coined in the late 1950s by Clarrie Pretty as “a badge of honour” given to people born in Cobar.

The committee came up with a plan to build an Iron Ringer monument to celebrate Iron Ringers and a site for the monument (adjacent to the Cobar Miners Memorial Park) was chosen last year.

Local artist Peter Rogers drew up a concept plan, the land was sorted, a quote for construction was procured from local business, KML Industries, and Cobar Shire Council agreed to co-fund the build.

Mr Collins said they were disappointed to have missed out on grant funding.

“It would have been nice to get a bit of a helping hand,” John said.

He said the committee is however still keen to forge forward and will meet next week to discuss fundraising ideas.

Small set back for Iron Ringer build

Proposal to open up Towser Huts The Cobar Tourism Advisory Committee is keen to see the historic Towser’s Huts site (located on the slopes of Fort Bourke Hill on the Peak Gold Mines’ mine site) become an area accessible to the public.

Local historian Kay Stingemore said the significance of Towser’s Huts has been recognised by the National Trust of Australia as having cultural importance.

Mrs Stingemore said the significance of the site lies in its stonework, layout and archaeology, its inhabitants, the history of the builder and the ongoing connection it has to the local community.

“The complex of five main buildings is believed to have been built by a Swiss/Italian immigrant, Antoni Tozzi, in the late 19th century,” Mrs Stingemore said.

It’s believed the huts were used by men who worked at the local mines.

She said there are numerous conflicting stories about the huts that have become folklore.

Mrs Stingemore is leading a delegation to Aurelia Metals/Peak Gold Mine to discuss how safe access to the site might be made available to visitors.

Another unique musical experience offered to CHS students Cobar High School students were able to take part in a professional Japanese drumming taiko workshop at the school on Friday.

Cobar High music teacher Laura Andrew said the one-day immersive workshop was facilitated by YuNiOn tutors Graham Hilgendorf and Akiko Yura and was presented in partnership with The Arts Unit, NSW Department of Education.

“Throughout the day, students learnt intricate taiko rhythms and different styles of playing the drums,” Ms Andrew said.

“Graham and Akiko brought an incredible amount of energy and passion to the sessions, inspiring students in their journey of learning to play the taiko.”

Cobar High School’s 17 taiko drums have been purchased through funding from NSW Education Minister’s Recovery Arts Program and a generous donation from Aurelia Metals, Peak Gold Mines.

Student Ebony Aumua said it was great to have their own taiko drums at the school.

“It gives some music students a new experience, we get to know someone else’s culture and learn how to play a different style of drum,” Ebony said.

Fellow student Emily Carey agreed and said the experience had taught her a lot about Japanese culture.

In the space of a day, students learnt an arrangement of piece, developed their drumming technique and extended their knowledge of Japanese culture and traditions.

“Taiko drumming can be very beneficial for the student’s wellbeing.

“Playing drums builds mental stamina, it’s a great cardio workout and students learn to listen and work together as a team,” Ms Andrew said.

Student Holly Watt described the experience as “just fun!”

Ms Andrew said as part of the same funding, Aurelia Metals also helped the school to purchase additional portable staging for events at the school and in the community.

Cobar Shire Library’s monthly adult craft workshop on Saturday showed participants the art of Quilling. Workshop leader and Library staff member Natalia Papierniak, explained Quilling is the process of twirling paper and gluing it down to make a three-dimensional picture. “Everything is done in a circle, it’s like 3D painting with paper,” Natalia said. Hundreds receive birth certificates for the first time

More than 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across western New South Wales have been provided with a free birth certificate at events hosted by Pathfinders and UNICEF Australia.

For some, it was the first time they had successfully applied for their identity.

Over two weeks, the Pathfinders and UNICEF Australia roadshow visited six towns in the region including, Cobar, Nyngan, Warren, Gilgandra, Coonabarabran and Gunnedah.

One of about 65 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who attended the face-to-face sign-up day in Gunnedah, Fiona, said it was really helpful having help to get her a birth certificate.

“It’s important to have a birth certificate, to have an identity, and to know where you came from.

“The sign-up event is very beneficial,” Fiona said.

The events are part of the Pathfinders National Aboriginal Birth Certificate Program (PNABC), which is open to parents who would like to get birth certificates for their children, as well as adults who don’t have a birth certificate.

Pathfinders CEO Alan Brennan said there are an estimated 200,000 Aboriginal people in Australia who do not have their birth certificates and are unable to fully participate in the community.

“It’s always a privilege to attend these events and witness someone receiving their proof of birth for the first time,” Mr Brennan said.

“It’s a very special occasion and something that will make life a lot easier for them.

“A birth certificate is essential for enrolling in school, getting a driver’s licence, voting, opening a bank account, getting a tax file number, a passport and applying for government benefits.

“Pathfinders and UNICEF Australia know that a birth certificate is a critical step in giving children opportunities in life, but it is never too late to get a birth certificate,” he said.

Experts from the community, including Local Land Council members, joined Pathfinders on the day to help make the process simple and answer questions from attendees.

We were hoping to include this photo in last week’s edition with our story on the NSW Government’s roll-out of 80 new purpose built 4WD ambulance vehicles, of which Cobar already has taken delivery of one. Bantams bow out Championship games draw a crowd of the competition The Cobar Roosters Under 18s side have bowed out of the Christie & Hood Castlereagh Rugby League Youth League competition after they were narrowly beaten

by Binnaway in their semi final match at Binnaway on Sunday.

The match was close from start to finish with Binnaway eventually finishing as 30-26 victors.

Sunday’s individual Stableford game only attracted a small field of five players.

This Saturday the Foursome Championships will be played over 27 holes.

Divas win the match of the round

Cobar Senior Netball’s top two teams met on Sunday in Round 7 of the winter competition with Divas eventually finishing as 54-41 winners over Pumpettes.

It was a great game with the scores even at the end of the first quarter, two points was the difference at half time, and there was just four goals separating them going into the final quarter of the match.

With the clock ticking down (and despite Divas having a slight advantage) the outcome was however still in the balance as the two teams went shot for shot.

With the pressure on, Divas’ classy shooter Lauren Urquhart stepped up to guide her side home to a win with faultless shooting.

Divas however still had a bit of a job getting the ball down to their ring as Pumpettes’ Neve Carter also ramped up her defence of the centre court. Carter’s numerous intercepts prevented the number of opportunities Urquhart received the ball in the shooting circle.

It was a great game of skill to watch.

The game’s Best & Fairest points were shared by Ethan McLeod (Divas Centre), Neve Carter (Pumpettes) and Corinne McLeod (Divas shooter). Sarah Morley (Pumpettes) and Amanda Fugar (Divas) earned the Sportsmanship awards.

In the other match played on Sunday, Pink Galahs won 38-11 over Tooth Fairies.

Pink Galahs got off to a great start piling on the points in the first quarter to take an early 10 goals lead, 14-4.

They continued to hold the upper hand and, by half time, Pink Galahs had a 30-5 lead.

It was a quieter second half for both sides as Pink Galahs went on to finish with an eventual 27 point win.
