Show committee request hire fees be waivered

The Cobar Show Society has called on Cobar Shire Council to consider waiving the Ward Oval hire fees for this year’s Cobar Show.

Councillors will discuss the matter and consider the request at tomorrow’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

Council’s Director of Corporate and Community Services, Kylie Smith has compiled a report on the matter.

“Council staff have been working with the Cobar Show Society around event management and risk assessment of the activities,” Ms Smith reported.

She said following feedback around the usage last year and the risks posed by multiple users and heavy machinery without appropriate control of the site, Council staff have requested that the show committee take control of the site and actively manage the setup and risks from set up to pack up.

This process will provide clear control and management by the site by Cobar Show Society for this week through until Sunday.

“In light of this request staff are seeking to have any fee for this set up time waived by Council,” Ms Smith said.

“The value of this write off requested is $3,845 in accordance with the fees and charges, noting that this amount has not been charged to the Cobar Show Society previously.”

The Cobar Show Society has successfully applied for a community donation for the 2026 show and been granted $2,000.

The donation for three days hire is equivalent to $2,307 as per Council’s current fees and charges.

All other charges for lighting, electricity and works will still be applied and will be payable by the show committee.

Donation helps Men’s Shed to purchase a new mill drill Ongoing sponsorship from Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions has enabled the Copper City Men’s Shed to purchase a new mill drill.

Men’s Shed coordinator Gordon Hill said Sandvik has supported the Men’s Shed for a number of years with an annual sponsorship arrangement.

“Their sponsorship has allowed the Shed Management Committee to upgrade and install new safety equipment to enhance the level of safety for members working in the Shed,” Mr Hill said.

Part of Sandvik’s sponsorship was used to purchase the new mill drill machine valued at $3,127 and replaces a 12 year old pedestal drill members had been using.

The versatile machine can create precise holes, drill, bore, machine flat and irregular surfaces, cut dovetails and keyways along with other cutting features.

An invitation to sing with Sydney Youth Orchestra

The Royal Far West (RFW) is celebrating 100 years of supporting country children and they want singers from Cobar to join in their celebrations.

RFW has commissioned a special song called Taking Care, written by composer Andrew Howes, with the Sydney Youth Orchestra to tour the Far West next month to perform the piece.

And they want local voices to join in!

The concert will be conducted by the incredible Benjamin Northey, one of Australia’s leading conductors.

Mr Northy is the Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orcestra and Principal Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Cobar High School music teacher Laura Andrew is putting together a pop-up community choir to sing with the orchestra.

“It’s a beautiful song,” Ms Andrew said.

“We’d love as many people as possible to sing.

“It’s not every day you get the chance to perform with a full orchestra!”

Students from the two local primary schools and Cobar High School are learning the song and will be part of the big performance alongside the 70-piece orchestra.

Community members are welcome to join the Cobar choir group with all ages and experience levels welcome.

St John’s students take part in Walk Safely to School Day St John’s School students and staff joined countless other primary school aged children and their teachers to participate in National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday.

This national initiative aims to encourage children to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle by simply including a walk at the beginning, at lunch time and at the end of each day.

This year marks the 26th anniversary of National Walk Safely to School Day. Championed by the Pedestrian Council Australia, the initiative aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking, or alternative active transport (especially to and from school) can provide for the long term well-being of our children every day.

Apart from the physical benefits, regular walking (or similar) has been proven to have a favourable impact on children’s cognitive and academic performance.

Walk Safely to School Day also encourages positive environmental action, better use of public transport with reduced cardependency and encourages parents and carers to walk more, reducing dangerous traffic congestion around schools.

Praise for Vinnies Council to consider rates and charges volunteers St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies) National President Mark Gaetani has praised the commitment of Vinnies 45,000 volunteers during National Volunteer Week this week.

“Our members and volunteers range from primary school through teenage years to folks in their 90s,” Mr Gaetani said.

“Their wonderful efforts are in tune with the theme of this year’s National Volunteer Week, ‘Connecting Communities’.

“This special event highlights the important role of volunteers in our community and invites people not currently volunteering to give it a go.”

Mr Gaetani said Vinnies volunteers put in thousands of hours each year visiting households in need, running food vans and other services for people wanting a hot meal and helping at times of national emergency, such as bushfires and floods.

‘I really do regard our volunteers as unsung heroes,” he said.

“The Society believes that volunteering improves both social inclusion and personal wellbeing. In fact, we play a vital part in looking after and advocating for those in need in local communities across Australia.”

He said volunteering rates are declining.

“These days there are many competing demands on people’s time, and the average age of volunteers is getting older,” Mr Gaetani said.

He said most people who volunteer already knew someone who was involved or they were asked to volunteer.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) encourages families to prepare a home escape plan so they can escape safely should a fire occur.

Having a home escape plan in conjunction with a working smoke alarm will greatly increase your chances of getting out safely.

Every second counts.

A home fire escape plan involves identifying escape routes from each room of the home as well as a place to meet once safely outside.

Know your fire escape plan no matter where you are, familiarise yourself with the layout and establish a clear fire escape plan.

This includes knowing all exits and safe paths to quickly evacuate if needed.

FRNSW have provided the following tips on preparing a home escape plan: Draw a floor plan of your home and mark your escape plan identifying two ways out of each room. Discuss your escape plan with your family/roommates.

Make sure that windows and screens can be easily opened.

Provide alternatives for anyone with a disability.

Decide on a safe outside meeting place eg near the letterbox.

Practice your plan at least twice a year, making sure that everyone is involved.

Good results for Cobar juniors in Round 4 of competition Cobar’s and South Dubbo’s Under 16s rugby league teams played a thriller of a game on Saturday at Apex Oval in Dubbo.

Their Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League competition Round 3 match finished in a 28-all draw.

Jackson Muldoon scored two tries for Cobar with team mates Billy George, Rowdy Barton, Lachlan Brookman and Drew Barton also crossing for a try each.

Lachlan added an extra four points to Cobar’s tally with his two successful conversions which helped to earn him the Players’ Player award as voted by his team mates.

Woloczij shot 463 and, combined with his 156 handicap, he finished with 619.

He now has a new handicap of 123.

Jones’ consistent performance earns him champion’s title A consistent performance and a perfect attendance record by Tom Jones saw him clean up at the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club’s presentations at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Friday night.

Jones won the 50m Pointscore Russel Harland Memorial Shield with 80 points (13 points ahead of second place) and the 100m trophy with 81 points (23 points ahead of the runner-up).

He also finished as the Overall Club Champion with 215 points to collect the Curly Solomon Shield ahead of Murray Harland (188 points) and Bill Fugar on 156.

Harland claimed the 30m Cobar Bowling & Golf Club Shield with 63 points, just four points in front of Fugar.

Paul Swainston won the Setts One Night Stand award after recording the lowest combined times for the 30m, 50m and 100m handicapped events in one night. (He swam to within 0.40 seconds in Week 18.)

Dave Mexted was the runner-up on 0.51 seconds.

Jones also won the Brace Relay Novelty event when he teamed up with Stephen Clark. The pair finished 9.31 seconds off their nominated times for five events contested.

Greg Martin won the Tom Knight Memorial Shield as the Most Improved swimmer.

It was game on at this year’s Darts Open The 2025 Cobar Darts Open, which offered over $5,000 in prizemoney, was held at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club over the weekend.

The event attracted 44 players from around the state (including nine members of the NSW State team) to compete for the prizemoney along with Darts NSW and Darts Australia points.

In Friday night’s Y-Not-sponsored Blind Drawn Doubles event, Anthony Mabbott (from Tamworth) drew Tim Ibbotson (Orange) as his partner and the pair came out on top over Shaun Doherty (Cobar) and Bernie O’Donnell (Broken Hill).

The Ladies and Men’s Doubles Tournaments were contested on Saturday.

Monica Riberio and Sara Howie, both State players from Sydney, took the Ladies Doubles title after they defeated mother/daughter team Julie Ridgewell and Gemma Spence (another State team member) from Tamworth.

The Men’s Doubles champions were NSW State player Craig Scarfe (from Orange) and David Whitmore (Orange) with Broken Hill duo Shane Kemp and Dane Schutter finishing as the runners-up.

The Ladies and Men’s Singles were decided on Sunday with Gemma Spence finishing as the Ladies’ winner (with Monica Riberio the runner-up) and Craig Scarfe beat David Whitmore in the Men’s Singles final.

Natasha Flood, with 139, had the Ladies Highest Peg Out of the tournament while 136 was the Men’s Highest Peg Out and was thrown by both Raymond O’Donnell and Tim Ibbotson.

Sara Howie (for the Ladies) and David Whitmore (for the Men) recorded the most 180 Cobar Darts 2025 Open Men’s Doubles runners-up Dane Schutter and Shane Kemp throws over the weekend.
