Enrolled Nurse at the Cobar Health Service, Irene Dunne will today celebrate 50 years of nursing. Irene started her nursing career at Cobar Hospital on December 20, 1973 at the age of 16. She has seen many changes over the years, but said she still enjoys nursing as much as the day she started.

Irene celebrated her achievement with past and present colleagues and family members at a morning tea last week.

Potential for “bulk tonnage” at Bulla Park project Recent drilling results by West Cobar Metals Limited at their Bulla Park Copper Project approximately 110km west of Cobar have demonstrated “bulk tonnage potential” for copper, antimony and silver.

The company has reported a single diamond hole was drilled and at 146m it intersected 0.16 per cent copper, 0.03 per cent antimony and 3g/t silver.

The drilling program “has confirmed a major mineralised system, currently covering an area of about 3km x 2km, with consistent thick intersections of disseminated and stringer copper, antimony and silver mineralization”.

The extent of the mineralization is untested and might contain zones of a much higher grade of copper-antimony-silver.

West Cobar Metals’ Managing Director, Matt Szwedzicki, said the results confirm there is a large, and unusual, mineralised system at Bulla Park, as evidenced by the thick copper, antimony and silver intercept.

“We will evaluate the potential next steps here bearing in mind that our main focus currently is the Salazar rare earth element and coproduct project [in Western Australia] where we are making excellent progress,” Mr Szwedzicki said.

(Antimony is a semi-metal that can be alloyed with lead or other metals to improve their hardness and strength.)

Kubby kids are ready to move on

The Kubby House Childcare Centre held a ‘Leaving Kubby Party’ last Tuesday afternoon with the children heading off to ‘big school’ next year presented with certificates before they joined their parents and siblings for games, a disco and party food. The kids helped organise the whole event and had a say in the menu, theme, dress code, activities and guest list. OCTEC offers a scholarship

The OCTEC Limited Glenn Taylor Scholarship is open to tertiary education students studying in 2024 from Western NSW who wish to study at TAFE, a Registered Training Organisation or University.

As a not for profit education and employment organisation, OCTEC offers the scholarship to benefit those experiencing financial hardship or who are high achievers.

The scholarship is named in memory of Glenn Taylor who sat on the OCTEC Board, was an Orange City Councillor and small business owner.

OCTEC Limited Chair Jeff Whitton said the scholarship program honours Mr Taylor’s commitment to community development.

“The official school year has ended for Year 12 students, and it’s a good time to think over the benefits of this scholarship before things get too hectic,” Mr Whitton said.

“OCTEC’s experience on the frontline showcases the width and depth of missed opportunities, inequality and unidentified talent in regional and rural areas.”

Each prospective student can benefit from up to $20,000 of support per annum.

They can apply now, and as they enrol for study next year.

Applications close early 2024 and will be assessed on need or merit.

Those who are pursuing study next year and are experiencing socio-economic disadvantage, hardship, disability, natural disaster or other special needs are encouraged to access the application form through the OCTEC website, at www.octec.org.au.

Reprieve from the heat for Christmas Cobar is expected to get a reprieve from the heat for Christmas with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting we’re in for a very pleasant Christmas Day with a top of 33 degrees expected.

Milder conditions are also forecast for the week leading up to Christmas with a top of 30 expected today (and a possible storm) while tomorrow should be a partly cloudy day and reach 31 degrees.

A maximum of 33 degrees is predicted for Friday and Saturday while the expected top for Sunday (Christmas Eve) is 34 degrees.

Possible showers are also predicted for Saturday and Sunday.

Yesterday’s top of 37.1 degrees was the tail end of a fortnight of very hot weather that included 10 days that registered maximums of close to, or over, 40 degrees.

Last Wednesday reached 39.9 degrees before the thermometer dipped a bit to 37.6 degrees on Thursday.

Friday’s maximum temperature was 35.6 degrees with 33.4 the top recorded on Saturday.

Sunday’s maximum temperature was slightly warmer at 34.7 degrees.

Monday reached a top of 40.6 degrees and was followed by a very warm night (it was still 30.1 degrees at 1.30am on Tuesday morning).

Saturday was our coolest night of the week with a minimum of 16 degrees recorded (which is just below the average for this time of the year of 18.8 degrees).

Major award winners

Heat blamed for drop in Cobar’s visitor numbers

Hot weather is being blamed for the drop in visitor numbers to Cobar over the past two months.

Cobar Shire Council’s tourism manager Demi Smith provided a report on visitor numbers to last week’s Tourism Advisory Committee meeting saying November had been “a very quiet month”.

Demi said their data showed we only had 929 visitors call in during November compared to 2,779 in October, and 2,903 in September.

“The visitors are still coming but November was very quiet,” Demi said.

“The heat is a major factor. There’s just not as many people on the roads, particularly caravaners, now passing through.”

Cobar’s busiest months this year for visitors were June (3,377), July (3,687) and August (3,506).

According to Demi’s figures most of our visitors over the past three months have been NSW residents (45.6 per cent) with Queenslanders ranking second (21.3 per cent) and Victorian travellers are third on the list at 14.6 per cent.

Two per cent of our visitors over the past quarter have been international visitors.

Demi said the Cobar Sound Chapel is still proving to be a drawcard for tourists with 159 groups visiting the site over the past three months.

Most of those visitors have been NSW residents (57.9 per cent) while 11.9 per cent have visited from Victoria.

Truck parking Following a recommendation from the Local Traffic Committee (LTC), Cobar Shire Council will look for funding to complete a study and analysis on truck parking on our town streets.

The recommendation comes from last month’s LTC committee meeting following complaints of trucks parking along the Barrier Highway (Marshall Street) and other surrounding streets.

It’s reported trucks have been double parking which impedes other motorists’ sight distances and are parking across driveways and too close to intersections.

There have also been noise complaints of refrigerated trucks parking overnight close to the caravan park and residential areas.

This year, they’ve gone bigger and created their own Auslan interpretation of the song Geronimo by the Australian band Sheppard, with the help of deaf-owned and deaf-led business My Auslan.

Cobar High School teachers Laura Andrew and Cassandra Best worked on an Auslan interpretation of the song and then sort consultation from a professional Auslan tutor at My Auslan.

They also worked directly with a member from the deaf community to create the performance.

“Although it can be tricky translating metaphors in songs, it is a great way for students to use expression and body language to communicate,” Ms Andrew said.

“They also develop an understanding that Auslan is its own language and has different grammar and sentence structures.”

Cobar High School’s Auslan Choir performance, which was recorded on presentation day, can be viewed on the school’s social media.

Brown leads his team to a win

Bian Smith, Karen Daly and Degen Brown were the winners of the Golfie’s Friday Twilight Bowls.

They beat the team of Tony Polack, Darryl Jermyn and David Schofield by +11.

Brown was the outstanding player of the match.

In the Pairs game, another impressive margin was had with Greg Clark and David ‘Turk’ Kershaw +8 winners against Allan Gardoll and Frank Singleton.

Singleton has had a spell away from the greens but proved he hasn’t lost his touch to bowl superbly on Friday night.

Sunday’s Social Bowls competition had enough for three games and talk about tight matches!

The very happy winners of the ham prize were David Schofield and Karen Daly.

They won by +4 over Tony Polack and Narelle Kriz, who are relatively new to bowls and have proven to be keepers judging by the ease with which Kriz honed in on the Jack more often than not!

Bian Smith, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Michael Harvey (double-lead) also had a good day winning their match.

They accounted for their opposition, Don Roberts, Ian Prendergast and Michael Harvey by a margin of +3.

Team Smith started strong with a five point win on one end and, despite a late charge by Team Roberts, they somehow dropped the ball and gave away seven shots! Oops, or more like ‘ouch’ judging by all the commotion on the green!

Skips Doug (aka the Bowls Burglar) Hudson and Gerard Livingston went head to head in their game again this week only this time Team Livo caught ‘The Burglar’ off guard and won by a margin of +3.

Livo’s teammates were Paul Kershaw and Greg Clark while Hudson’s teammates were David ‘Ooze’ Knight and David Kershaw.

The only wrong bias sighted all day was delivered by David Schofield so he was the winner of the George The Giraffe Award.

This brought out an extra competitive streak in the Cobar swimmers.

The 50m freestyle is Henry’s pet event, and he showed once again why his 6am daily training sessions are worth the effort, coming in several seconds in front of the other two Cobar swimmers.

Nick Hodges and Harry Cousins, always keen to out do each other, were fighting neck and neck for second place for most of the race, with Nick having a slight lead.

Harry spotted that Nick was in front and pushed hard in the last 5m, but left his run a little too late, with Nick coming in second by 0.34 of a second and Harry finished 3rd.

The CATS came to play at last Thursday night’s B Grade Open Mixed Touch grand final at Ward Oval. They finished the night as 8-1 winners over Rusty Snails. The match was expected to be a much closer one, and it was close at the halfway mark (1-0), before the CATS brought into play their ‘A-game’ in the second half and ran away to win.

Batting Achilles heel leads to loss In the latest Brewery Shield competition 50-over clash, Narromine emerged victorious over Cobar by two wickets at their home ground Sunday.

Cobar, winning the toss and opting to bat first, continued their troubling trend in batting, posting a modest total of 153.

This total follows their recent string of low scores – 86, 77, and now 153 – highlighting their batting struggles as the team’s Achilles heel.

Despite the low total, Cobar’s batting performance did however have some notable contributions with Jade Buckman top-scoring with a brisk 37 off 22 balls, and featuring seven boundaries.

Jay Egan and captain Jake Harbison also chipped in with 21 and 27 runs, respectively.

However, the team couldn’t capitalise on these starts, eventually crumbling to 153 all out in 35.5 overs.

Narromine’s bowling attack was spearheaded by Daniel Battishall, who claimed an impressive six wickets for 20 runs in his 9.5 overs, ably supported by Alex Sambrook with figures of 2/25.

In response, Narromine had a shaky start but eventually steadied the ship, thanks to a resilient unbeaten 48 from Lachlan Reid, who was given four reprieves by Cobar’s fielders.

The dropped catches ultimately proved costly for Cobar, as Narromine reached the target with two wickets in hand.

Parry impresses on pistol range

A field of six competitors shot in the Centre Fire/Sports match on Sunday at the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s weekly shoot .

Geoff Clayton acted as Range officer and Lidija Garbutt was on hand to provide training.

In Amanda Parry’s first attempt at this event, she scored 393 off pistol, and added to her 350 handicap, Parry finished with an impressive total of 743 and earned herself a new handicap of 186.

Robert Neate scored 274 in the precision stage and 238 in the rapid fire section to post a score of 512 off pistol and, with his handicap of 48, he finished with a total of 560.

Other scores were: Michael Garbutt 497-62559; John Stingemore (using the large 45 Long Colt Revolver) 309-153-462; Anita Neate 166-253-419; and new shooter Joe Simes joined the match late in the session and, with some good grouping, scored 75-350 -425. (Hopefully he will get a full match in next time.)
