Aurelia reports “spectacular” drill results

Aurelia Metals has reported significant results from their recent exploration programs at the Federation deposit and Lancelot prospect in the Nymagee District.

Chief Development and Technical Officer, Andrew Graham reports they have received the final assays for their diamond drill hole FDD215 at Federation, a visual drill core of which was shared in April.

Mr Graham said the results confirmed “a spectacular intercept”.

Results from a combined soil geochemical survey and auger drill program at Lancelot were also received.

Combining these with promising geophysical survey results reported in January 2023, several highly prospective target areas have been defined for follow-up drill testing, planned for FY25.

“The drill core of Federation hole FDD215 is visually spectacular and the assay results confirm an outstanding intercept, even when considered relative to very high-grade holes into the Federation deposit.

“What is more exciting is that this drilling points to a faulted offset of the deposit, some 140 metres to the north, with the potential to extend the Federation deposit materially to the west,” Mr Graham said.

Additionally, the interpretation of soil auger work at the Lancelot prospect, combined with earlier geophysical results, has identified several exciting targets. These are planned to be drill tested next financial year.

NSW Labor Government at the Gilgunnia Goldfields Rest Area, located about 109 kilometres south of Cobar on the Kidman Highway, will commence this week.

The road is a major freight route used for transportation of livestock, produce and other goods interstate.

The $255,000 upgrade will bring the rest stop up to modern standards and see the toilet upgraded from the waterless composting facility currently in place.

Work to improve drainage and the surface of the truck parking bay will also be carried out, while a fresh coat of paint will be applied to the water tank.

A non-working barbecue, cage and a disused water tank will also be removed as part of efforts to improve the amenity of the rest area, which will remain open throughout the upgrade period.

Upgrade work is expected to take up to six weeks to complete.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said having visited the area twice in the past two years, she knows the value of good quality roadside stops to the local communities, tourism and freight operators in the area.

“Good amenities in remote rest stops can be the difference between life and death in helping long distance drivers to better manage their fatigue,” Ms Aitchison said.

With information sourced directly from emergency service authorities, the Hazards Near Me NSW app is a gateway to reliable emergency updates on bushfires and floods in regional areas.

If you are caught up in an emergency, time and location accuracy are critical, which is where the Emergency Plus app comes in.

This app gives your precise location to emergency services, using three unique words and a tool to help you ring Triple Zero quickly.

There are two further apps available through the Get Ready NSW campaign, which are also worth considering for your phone.

Live Traffic NSW lets you know where planned and unplanned incidents may impact on your intended travel plans, while the Bureau of Meteorology app – which is the official Australian weather monitoring service – gives you hourly and seven-day forecasts.

Howard Collins, Coordinator General at Transport for NSW said the advertising campaign is part of a program to encourage regional bus passengers to recognise that buckling up is mandatory on all buses fitted with seatbelts in NSW. “Research by Transport for NSW found that many bus passengers hadn’t considered the physics of a bus crash before - when the bus stops loose items continue to move at speed,” Mr Collins said.

“The dramatic advertisement demonstrates what can happen to a passenger in a bus crash and why a seatbelt can make a significant difference to the outcome.

“It depicts a locket snapping off a passenger’s neck and flying through the air.

“The locket symbolises the connection to a loved one and their irreplaceable loss,” he said.

The roll out of the campaign is a result of recommendations from the Bus Industry Taskforce formed last year to make recommendations to improve bus services, including ways to improve safety following the tragic Hunter Valley bus crash.

“As the campaign states ‘in the event of a crash, the bus will stop, you won’t’, this is why it’s so important that every adult follows their legal obligation to wear a seatbelt where available on a bus and that parents and carers talk to their children about the importance of wearing one too.

“The campaign tag line is ‘buckle up on the bus.’ Wearing a seatbelt doubles your chances of survival in a crash – it’s a simple act that is not only a legal requirement, but one that could save yours or your child’s life. I’m encouraging everyone to ‘buckle up on the bus’ every time there’s a seatbelt available,” Mr Collins said.

BusNSW Executive Director, Matt Threlkeld welcomed the new campaign.

“The industry is seeking community support to build a culture where passengers, including school students, understand that wearing a seatbelt on a bus is not a personal choice, but a legal requirement,” Mr Threlkeld said.

Lured to Australia during the 1850s gold discovery era, Peter first headed to Bendigo but had no success in finding his fortune in gold.

He later went back to his trade and became the first watchmaker on the Darling River at Wentworth NSW. On January 7, 1858 at age 33, Peter married 22 year old Anne Kelly from Scotland.

Anne’s wedding dress was gifted to her by humanitarian aid worker Carolyn Chisholm.

In 1861 Peter moved to Wentworth to set up his business of repairing clocks and watches.

With his business established, he sent for his wife and their daughter Anna Marea, to join him 18 months later.

Then along came another daughter Sophia, as well as sons John George, Peter (Jnr) and Bernard.

Peter became a well-known pillar of the Wentworth community, raising money to lay the foundation stone of the Roman Catholic Church and was an active member of the school board.

He also officiated at Catholic burial services as there was no Roman Catholic Priest stationed at Wentworth.

In 1870, Peter travelled to Bourke looking for new opportunities.

His family followed two years later where The Johnsons have replicated the original Glenhope homestead built by the Welties when they settled and welcomed two more children, they first settled in the Cobar area 150 years ago. Photo contributed

Free flu shots

People aged 65 and over are again being urged to book in now for their free flu vaccine, as the virus continues to surge across the state.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the latest NSW Health Respiratory Surveillance Report shows in the week ending June 8, 2024, there was an increase of more than 25 per cent in people diagnosed with influenza compared with the previous week.

“Flu is rapidly increasing across the state. In the past week alone, presentations to our emergency departments increased by almost 22 per cent for people with influenza-like illness,” Dr Chant said.

“We are expecting the flu season will be around for several weeks to come, so now is the time to book in for your free flu vaccine to get the vital protection you need.

“This is particularly important for people aged 65 and over who are at higher risk of severe illness from influenza, and unfortunately our vaccination rates for this group still aren’t where we need them to be.

“At present, just half of people 65 and over (52.4 per cent) in NSW have received their flu vaccine. With influenza, COVID-19 and RSV all circulating in the community, we continue to remind the community to avoid visiting high-risk settings including hospitals and aged care facilities if they are experiencing symptoms of respiratory illness.”

Dr Chant said vaccination is the best protection against infection and severe disease. Everyone, but particularly those at increased risk of severe disease, is urged to get vaccinated now.

By getting vaccinated you also help protect those around you.

The influenza vaccine is free and readily available for those at higher risk of severe illness from influenza.

It is available through GPs for any age group, as well as through pharmacies for everyone aged five years and over.

Those who are eligible for free vaccination include: people aged 65 and over; children aged six months to under five years; Aboriginal people from six months of age; pregnant women; and those with serious health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, immune disorders, severe asthma, kidney, heart, and lung disease.

Dr Chant said taking simple steps such as staying home if you are sick, wearing a mask, and practicing good hand hygiene can help to protect yourself and your loved ones during the flu season.

Aumua scores a trio of tries for the Roosterettes Speedster Brennah Aumua scored three tries to help the Cobar Roosterettes to a 28-8 win over Binnaway at Binnaway on Saturday.

The Cobar side went into the Castlereagh Ladies League Tag Round 7 game as favourites on Saturday and didn’t disappoint.

Captain/coach Brianna Watson was proud of their win.

“It was a very physical game from the get go,” Watson told The Cobar Weekly.

“But our girls kept their cool and supported each other well in both attack and defence.”

Watson, along with Kayla Hasson, added a try each to their tally in Saturday’s win.

Watson also kicked three goals and recent sign on, Tia Turner, added another two points to their tally with her successful conversion.

Molly Broughton earned the Roosterettes team’s Best & Fairest three points and she also collected her team’s Players’ Player award.

Best & Fairest two points went to Neve Carter and one point was earned by Jezebel Hitchins.

The Roosterettes will come up against 5th place Coonamble this Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

JKM Dynamic Fitness outplayed the Pink Galahs JKM Dynamic Fitness outplayed Pink Galahs to win 45-27 in Round 8 of the Senior Mixed Netball competition on Friday night at Ward Oval.

JKM had a nine points lead at half time and they upped their efforts in the second quarter in both attack and defence to finish with an 18 point win.

JKM Dynamic Fitness’ Jayne Sharkey and Sally Short collected Best & Fairest points along with Pink Galahs’ Anita Atuau.

Stevie Toomey (JKM Dynamic Fitness) and Sam Vaka (Pink Galahs) earned their team’s Sportsmanship nomination.

Smash Ups finished as 42-23 winners over Pumpettes.

Smash Ups got off to a flying start and never looked back to ultimately finish with an easy 19 point win.

Smash Ups’ Nikki Gilbert and Rori Urquhart shared in the umpire’s Best & Fairest points along with Pumpettes’ Madasan Taylor.

Brennah Aumua (Smash Ups) and Sosie Barton (Pumpettes) earned the Sportsmanship awards.

A win by the Cobar Roosters Under 18s side over Binnaway on Saturday promoted the Roosters to second spot on the Castlereagh Youth League ladder.

The Cobar side snatched a narrow 24-20 victory at Binnaway with Tadgh McMullen scoring the winning try just three minutes before the full time siren.

Cobar coach Paul Sullivan said it was a close, tight match throughout with the scores locked at 10-all at half time.

“Binnaway have a real good side and I thought they might have beaten us,” Sullivan said.

“But our boys hung on for the win.”

Tadgh McMullen led the try scoring for Cobar with two tries with Kai Taylor, Tommy Bryan and Oisin McMullen also crossing for a try each.

Bryan and Coonabarabran import, Zane Jenner, kicked a goal each.

Sullivan said 16 year old Jenner was a great boost for the side and was warmly welcomed by the Cobar team on Saturday after he’d received clearance from Country Rugby League to play.

Gulgong and Cobar both have 13 points with Gulgong on top having a better for and against ratio.

Narromine is just behind in third place on 11 points after they lost to Gulgong last week.

Troy Knight has returned to head up the Cobar Little Athletics Club for another season with Knight re-elected as president at the club’s recent annual general meeting.

A number of new faces have joined the committee this season including, Shaun Doherty (vice president), Suzie Wells (secretary and assistant registrar), Pearl Blackburn (assistant registrar) and Zoë Egan (Tiny Tots coordinator).

Rebecca Wyllie has returned as treasurer and Brenda Knight as registrar.

Jason Toomey and Emily Miller were also elected to the general committee.

Rain continues to interrupt golf

If ever Cobar needs rain these days, all that needs to be done is to arrange a golf day.

The golf program has been badly affected by rain a lot this season—the Cobar Open was washed out, the NSW Pro-Am was reduced to one wet and muddy day and the recent Di McLeod Memorial Day and the Foursome Championships were also affected. It seems climate change is playing havoc with golf in Cobar.

Wednesday once again provided the best weather for the eight players who turned up for the men’s event.

Bill Fugar won the day with 30 points beating Bian Smith on a countback.

Travis ‘Chubb’ Buckman came third with 29 points.

The low scores are yet another indication of how tough playing conditions are at the moment.

There were three Nearest the Pin prizes won, by Buckman on the 3rd and 4th holes and by Greg Collins on the 8th hole.

The annual Foursome Championships were played on Sunday over 27 holes.

The cool weather kept the numbers to a minimum.

Bill Fugar and Garry Wilkin finished as the 2024 A Grade champions after beating Alec Fraser and Mark Fraser by three shots.

Stewart Fraser and Max Phillips were way back in third place.

In B Grade, Travis Buckman, fresh from his win on Saturday, joined Robbie Cummins to defeat the ‘Beagle Boys’ Steve Manns and Greg Clark.

Their winning margin was four points.

Another indication of playing conditions was only one Nearest the Pin prize was won

by Stewart Fraser on the third hole.

Buckman’s 41 points in the Di Mcleod Memorial Day is one of the first 40-plus scores for the year.

Another game in the Bill Bartlett Match Play competition was played with Garry Wilkin having to deal with Bian Smith and his bag of tricks.

Wilkin fell short and Smith will now play former Wanaaring Open Champion, Peter ‘China’ Brien in the next round.

If there is one player in the club who can ignore Smith’s mind games, it is Brien.

There are also a number of other games that need to be played before month’s end.

In golf this week, the Empire Hotel Day, a three-person Ambrose, will be played on Saturday and Sunday’s game is a Four-Ball Multiplier.—Out of Bounds

The Camels might be down but they are not out!

The Cobar Camels Rugby Union club took a strong side to Bourke on Saturday but at fulltime, it was their opposition, the combined Bourke/Brewarrina side, who ran out winners, 41-17.

In no way was the final score an indication of the spectacle provided.

The game was tough and uncompromising but outstanding and competitive.

The Camels had all the early possession so the forwards led the attack with some fearsome charges notably by tight head prop Taufao Taufao.

He was ably backed up by flanker Toby Jones, second rowers Jordan Bruce and Sam Jeffrey and Number 8, Chris Crotty.

Jack Fazulla, at loose head prop, chimed in to register his best ever game with the Camels.

When halfback Kody Martin went the blind, he found Crotty backing up who passed to Fijian winger Inoke Nabutokere who “floated” through three Bourke defenders to score the first try of the match.

When Martin converted the crowd fell silent.

Cobar continued to dominate possession and Sam Jeffrey won three successive lineouts to allow the speedy Camels’ backline to put on a bit of razzle dazzle football.

There was some scintillating rugby played.

A converted penalty to Bourke/Bre hit back.

The halftime score was 24-12 in favour of the home side but not before winger cum Flanker Reynold Mugugia scored for the Camels after backing up Fijian flyer, Taito Koroi.

In the second half, little mistakes, lack of condition and cohesion on the part of Cobar allowed Bourke/Bre to accumulate 41 points for the match.

Cobar added to their tally after centre Gordon James sliced through the Bourke/Bre defence to sprint 80 metres only to be brought down a metre from the scoreline.

From the ensuing professional foul, albeit, a friend from the Roosters, Mugugia took a quick tap to drive his way over the try line.

The fulltime score was 41-17.

In a team in which every member contributed, points in Best and Fairest were awarded to Gordon James (3), Toby Jones (2) and one each to Chris Crotty, Ben Griffiths and Jack Fazulla with Gordon James named the side’s Players’ Player.

A special mention must be made of Hooker Jordon Sipendi and winger Marley Jones who are still learning the game, but continue to contribute at home and away matches.

This team of entertainers is available to play Nyngan at Cobar this Friday night under lights. (See advertisement on opposite page for more information.)

Nyngan will be tough but the Cobar Camels will be much improved after Saturday’s gallop.

Cobar Roosters were no match for the big Dubbo visitors Cobar hosted five Dubbo teams on Saturday for Round 6 of the Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League competition.

The Under 9s kicked off the day with their uncontested game.

Cobar’s awards went to Leah McClure (Coaches Award) and Rosie George (Subway Players’ Player).

In the Under 10s game, which was also uncontested, the Roosters Coaches Award was earned by William Orcher while their Subway Players’ Player was Indie Burke.

The Roosters Under 12s had a tough game against Dubbo Macquarie with the visitors finishing with a 54-0 victory.

Bria-June Brookman shared in the referee’s Best & Fairest points with Dubbo Macquarie’s Taine McEwen and Cruz McEwen.

Susan Goonrey had a win in last Wednesday’s Stableford round of the Ladies Golf competition.

She scored a respectable 36 points to finish ahead of her sister Geraldine Francisco who was second after a countback from Fay Hardwick.

Each had finished the day with 31 points.

The Nearest the Pin winner on the 15th hole for A Grade was Sally Bannister; Karen Manns and Geraldine Francisco couldn’t be separated in B Grade; and Sue Phillips picked up the pin win for C Grade.
