The funding for four planning and design CBD projects in Cessnock, Mudgee, Bathurst and Cobar was recently announced as part of the Albanese Government’s regional Precincts and Partnership Program (rPPP), which provides investment to transform regional, rural and remote places. Cobar Shire Council will receive almost $3.5 million to deliver the design and planning works for the Grand Precinct, to get it up to construction and tender-ready status. The project will transform the town’s CBD in four key areas: the Grand Hotel, the library, the town hall and the Brennan Centre. Design and planning works will include redesigning the Grand Hotel into a culturalcommercial hub; upgrading the library which will include building a second story to accommodate apartments/units; restoring the town hall for multi-purpose use which could include an art gallery space; and adding more senior housing units as part of the Brennan Centre housing complex. The Grand Precinct design will also include improving the streetscape. Cobar Shire Mayor Jarrod Marsden said the funding was great news for Cobar. “It’s great the Federal Government has seen the work that we’ve done with community enhancement and engagement and has fol- Cobar Shire Council bought the dilapidated Grand Hotel and adjacent café building in lowed that through with funding to make these the main street at the end of 2023 as part of their vision to upgrade the main street. projects a reality,” Cr Marsden said.
