Dementia education session offered to local carers The Lilliane Brady Village (LBV) hosted a public dementia education session last week aimed at helping dementia carers.

Dementia Training Australia’s (DTA) Nancy Marino, who was in town to conduct dementia training for staff at the LBV, led the 90 minute session on Thursday night at the Services Club.

Ms Marino explained there were five main types of dementia—Alzheimer’s disease, Vascular dementia, Frontotemporal dementia, Dementia with Lewy bodies and Mixed dementia, and all affect different parts of the brain.

“Although there are 100 plus different types of dementia,” Ms Marino said.

“Dementia is not a normal aging process, it’s a progressive neurological disease.

“Dementia affects people in different ways.

“No two people have the same dementia journey,” she said.

Ms Marino explained how the different types of dementia can affect people, spoke about the symptoms associated with the different types of dementia, listed the risk factors associated with the disease and gave tips for supporting people with dementia including ways for people with dementia to still be involved with their regular activities.

She also outlined what support is available to carers through DTA, Dementia Australia and Dementia Support Australia.

Ms Marino said of concern was that more than 28,000 people were diagnosed last year with younger onset dementia and that figure is expected to rise to over 42,000 people by 2058.

A carer who attended the session said she found it “very informative” and requested that more local help be made available.

Improvements to water reliability

Cobar will soon enjoy improved water reliability thanks to two new high-tech pump stations soon to be delivered at Nyngan and Hermidale, ensuring water is pumped more efficiently to the town.

The contract for the $45.5 million infrastructure project has been awarded to construction company Diona.

Work will begin in early 2025 and will create 20 jobs.

These pump stations are being delivered through funding by the Federal and State governments.

The project has been deemed a priority because the current pump stations are ageing and at risk of failing, which could interrupt water supply and cause major impacts for residents, businesses and the local mining industry.

Building facilities fit for the 21st century will significantly improve the efficiency and transfer of water as it travels from the Nyngan weir pool to Cobar along an existing 138 -kilometre pipeline.

Every town in NSW deserves access to safe and reliable water services which is why the Australian and NSW Labor Governments have been working closely with Cobar and Bogan Shire Councils and the Cobar Water Board over the past two years to get the project over the line.

Construction on the pump stations is expected to be complete by mid-2026.

Cobar Mayor Jarrod Marsden welcomed the announcement.

“It has been many years in the making, but this is a great example of Cobar Shire Council working collaboratively with the Australian and NSW Governments to deliver new water infrastructure that will support residents, businesses and the mining industry for many generations,” Cr Marsden said.

“We have been advocating strongly for new pump stations because the current ones are past their use-by date, so I am pleased to see the project is picking up momentum with contractors now in place.

“Cobar knows better than most that access to reliable water is essential, particularly when you live in a town 138km from the nearest water source which is why this new infrastructure will be a game changer,” Cr Marsden said.

An early Christmas present

Local police seize two firearms Cobar Police seized two firearms and an amount of ammunition following a visit to a business premises in Marshall Street on Monday morning.

Business found to be in breach

Cobar Police and Central North Police District detectives assisted NSW Health with an inspection on a business premises last week.

During the inspection on the afternoon of Tuesday December 10 a number of tobacco and nicotine products believed to have been in breach of NSW Health rules were seized.

Sergeant Warwick Laing said an investigation into the business is now being conducted

by NSW Health.

“The business was closed for some time however this was not due to any orders issued by police or NSW Health,” Sergeant Laing clarified.

Council considers a dedicated dog park at Ward Oval Cobar Shire Councillors last week discussed the establishment of a dedicated dog park at Ward Oval.

Mayor Jarrod Marsden put forward the matter for discussion at Thursday’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

“There are many dog owners in Cobar and feedback from the community is strongly in favour of establishing a dedicated and safe space for dogs to be exercised,” Cr Marsden said.

“Ward Oval is already established as a central community hub with toilet facilities and parking etc. already in place.

“The chosen location [in the south west corner] has established shade and fencing already in place for a large portion of the area and it is away from residential areas, removing any disturbance issues,” he said.

Cr Bob Sinclair said he thought it was “a great idea” and would be well used by dog owners in Cobar.

Councillors voted in favour of council staff preparing designs and a costings report to build a dog park to be presented at the April 2025 Ordinary Council Meeting.

The proposed dog park is to be added to Council’s strategic planning documents.

Councillors also voted that grant funding opportunities be sought once costing is finalised to construct the park.

Call to reinstate Medicare and CentreLink service Local resident Jill Weaving has taken up the fight with the Federal Government to have face-to-face Medicare and Centrelink services reinstated in Cobar.

Mrs Weaving has started a written petition and has already garnered over 200 signatures from locals who would like to see the two services resumed in Cobar.

“I’ve had a huge response and I just think it’s something the town needs,” Mrs Weaving told The Cobar Weekly.

Mrs Weaving said she has taken up the fight on behalf of the elderly people in town, many of whom don’t have access to a computer or don’t have anyone to go to for help to fill out forms and make claims.

“I was sitting in the library a few weeks ago and this lady came in,” Mrs Weaving said.

“She was nearly in tears because her husband was put in the Village and she had all these forms to fill out, and she didn’t know what to do or where to go.

“I just felt really sorry for her.

“I thought well, maybe we can get something going here.”

Mrs Weaving has written letters to Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton (and also State Member for Barwon Roy Butler) about the matter.

“This is a disgrace to our Government for Cobar not to have any services,” Mrs Weaving said.

Mr Coulton told The Cobar Weekly he was aware that the Services Australia Agent in Cobar had ceased following the closure of the contracted Agent’s local office.

“My office has raised constituent concerns with Services Australia and has been advised that the issue is currently being addressed, with the hope that Agent services will be reinstated in the New Year,” Mr Coulton said.

“A community engagement officer has been deployed to assist the community in the meantime.

“I do recognise the impact of the Agent’s sudden closure on the community.

“I continue to liaise with Services Australia on this matter; my office is available to assist constituents with any complex Services Australia matters that cannot be addressed using self-service options,: Mr Coulton advised.

Life Membership for loyalty

The Cobar Services Club bestowed Life Membership on five hard working members at the club’s annual general meeting on Monday night. Chris Boucher, Julie Claus, Diane Slater, Colleen Boucher OAM and Susie Loughran (pictured above) were presented with Life Membership cards by the club’s secretary/manager Linda Carter.

Claud Parisi was also honoured as the 2024 Club Patron and a new board was elected after a ballot vote. The club’s auditor, Michael Griffiths from Luka Group, presented the audited 2023/2024 financial report and congratulated the club for achieving a net profit for the year of $10,270 compared to last year’s loss of $19,443.

Suggestions from the floor for the club to once again consider amalgamation and to reinstate a bowling green both didn’t gain favour with the members present.

Cobar’s scorching hot weather is expected to continue into the weekend with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting the mercury will reach a top of 41 degrees this Saturday and Sunday.

There is also a slight chance of a shower over the weekend but, other than that, we’re in for a hot, dry week.

The current heatwave arrived on Sunday when the thermometer reached 40.9 degrees and 40.7 was the recorded maximum on Monday.

OzArk Environment & Heritage has been engaged by APA (the proponent) to complete an Aboriginal cultural heritage assessment for a modification to the Moomba to Wilton Pipeline (MWP).

The proposed modification will involve the construction of a compressor station (MW733) and ancillary infrastructure in Lot 3 along the MWP, at Merri Road, approximately 16 kilometres southwest of Gilgunnia and 110 km south of Cobar in the Cobar Shire local government area.

These activities may result in harm to Aboriginal cultural heritage.

OzArk is seeking Aboriginal persons and / or groups who wish to be consulted about the proposed modification.

This consultation will assist in preparing the ACHAR as required by the Secretary of the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) in their consideration and determination of the proposed modification.

If you hold cultural knowledge relevant to determining the cultural significance of Aboriginal objects or places in the project area, please register your interest to be consulted.

Bushies bounce back to win match In the final Twenty/20 cricket match for the year under lights, the Bushies defended a challenging total of 130, as the Concrete Cowboys were bowled out for just 52 runs.

The Bushies’ bowlers put on a dominant display, with standout performances from Lakshmi Maddipati and James Anderson, who played key roles in dismantling the Cowboys’ batting lineup.

The Bushies batted first and posted a total of 8/130 in their 20 overs.

Matthew Nicholson (6) was dismissed early by Ryan Urquhart, as was Scott Toomey (2) who fell to Kody Martin.

A third early wicket saw another Bushies player go for just one, with Urquhart striking again.

At 5/43, the Bushies were in danger of folding quickly, but Shaun Doherty stepped up, smashing a rapid 20 before the pivotal partnership came from Lakshmi Maddipati (33 not out) and James Anderson (27 not out). The duo added 60 runs for the unbroken 9th wicket, guiding the Bushies to a competitive total.

The Concrete Cowboys faced an uphill battle right from the start when Kody Martin (4) fell early.

The wickets continued to tumble, with Jack Fazulla (0) dismissed cheaply by the same bowler, and Ryan Urquhart (13) followed shortly after.

The Bushies were well on top having taken wickets in quick succession to see the Cowboys at 5/29 after seven overs.

Cobar swimmers compete at Nyngan & Gilgandra carnivals Cobar Swimming Club members have competed at Nyngan and Gilgandra swimming carnivals over the weekend.

A team of 10 Cobar swimmers participated in Nyngan’s Annual Christmas Carnival on Sunday, under Coach Tom Jones’ guidance.

Coach Jones said all swimmers demonstrated significant improvements, which was a testament to their diligent training.

Notably, Aubree Everingham and Isla Jo Murray, two of the club’s youngest swimmers, attended their first carnival, showcasing advancements in time and stroke technique.

Both secured several prizes.

Similarly, Ashlee Compton and Keelan Atuau attended their first carnivals and both displayed improvement.

Isabelle Gillette achieved third-place finishes in her Butterfly and Breaststroke events, and also improved her previous personal best (PB) times in all her events.

Henry Knight recorded a PB in his 50m Freestyle event, broke a seven-year-standing carnival record, and achieved a qualifying time for Country Regionals in 50m Freestyle with a time of 26.95 seconds.

A team of five competed at Gilgandra’s Short Course Swimming Carnival on Saturday.

For siblings Aisea, Sione and Kasalia Fakahua, it was their first club carnival experience and each swam well.

Cobar holds their nerve

Cobar High School’s best in sport were acknowledged at the school’s end of year presentations on Thursday at the school. Montana Grentell collected the Cath Carroll Award for interest and participation in several sports by a girl , Jaxon Burke earned the Paul Cotterill Award for interest in participation in several sports by a boy, Pearl Blackburn received the Bill and Chatie Prisk Memorial Award as the Most Outstanding Sportsperson in 2024 and Sosie Barton won the Grace Mitchell Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship by a Girl. Cobar’s representative cricket side held their nerve to record a thrilling two-wicket victory over Narromine at Ward Oval on Sunday, successfully chasing down the target of 176.

Narromine won the toss and elected to bat first, but Cobar’s bowlers quickly made an impact, reducing the hosts to a precarious position early in their innings.

Jake Harbison was instrumental with the ball, claiming three wickets for 25 runs, while Ryan Urquhart (3/31) and Nicola Harbison (3/33) also picked up three wickets each.

Kyle Larance (48) was the best of the Narromine batters with their innings finishing at 9/176 in their allotted 40 overs.

Cobar’s chase was far from straightforward.

While Harbison played a key role in Cobar’s chase with 45 runs, he was dismissed with the score at 2/84.

Cobar then slumped to 5/100 before Andrew Hill (14) joined Stephen Nicholson (29) and the pair moved the innings on to 145 before both were dismissed in quick succession.

Ryan Urquhart fell shortly after with the score at 154.

Anthony Mitchell’s calm 17 not out guided the team through the closing overs and with support from Prajwal Kharel, Cobar surpassed Narromine’s total in the 38th over.

In challenging and very hot conditions, Narromine’s bowlers kept up the pressure.

Liam Wherritt (2/25) and Daniel Battishall (3/37) fought hard to keep the match alive.

Cobar’s narrow victory showcased their resolve in a tight chase.

Despite Narromine’s bowlers, led by Wherritt and Battishall, making regular breakthroughs, Cobar’s batting resilience saw them through in the final moments.

This thrilling contest will be remembered for its dramatic finish and exceptional all-round performances on both sides.—contributed
