Homes and businesses without power after truck accident A misjudgment by a B Double truck driver resulted in power lines being brought down in Bourke Street on Saturday morning.

Around 10.30am on Saturday police attended the intersection of Marshall Street and Bourke Street after receiving a report that a B Double truck had hit a power pole.

Cobar Police Sergeant Warwick Laing said they received a report that the power pole was damaged and electrical wires were hanging down onto the road.

“Bourke Street was closed at that intersection for a short time until Essential Energy crews attended and removed the wires and damaged pole,” Sergeant Laing said.

An Essential Energy spokesperson said power was switched off to 38 homes and businesses around 10.40am after the truck brought down the power pole.

“Crews set about replacing the power pole and associated network equipment as quickly as safety allowed, and restored power to all affected customers around 1.50pm,” the spokesperson said.

“As power was restored, a network fuse failed, and power went off again to those 38 customers around 2.05pm.

Regional Australia Bank hands out $74,000 to local groups The Regional Australia Bank (RAB) Cobar branch is part of the ‘Feel good banking’ movement and this year has handed out over $74,000 to support local community and sporting organisations.

A total of 33 local groups received donations of between $110 and up to $7,864 as beneficiaries of this year’s Community Partnership Program (CPP) event on Monday night at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.

Of the 33 recipients, 17 groups received more than $2,000 with Cobar Junior Rugby League ($7,864), Cobar Rodeo ($5,135), Cobar Auto Club ($4,429), Cobar Preschool ($3,378), Cobar Pistol Club ($3,232), Lilliane Brady Village Pink Ladies ($2,800) and the Great Western Gallery ($2,415) among the recipients.

All recipients said the donations would make a real difference to their clubs and groups.

RAB CEO David Heine was on hand to help local branch staff and regional staff hand out the donations.

Mr Heine said it was a great pleasure to be able to hand out over $2.7m from the CPP to 1,900 community groups this year.

Through the CPP, customers who bank with RAB are invited to nominate a local group to support.

The bank calculates the average annual balance and donates the equivalent of 0.75 per cent back to the chosen group.

Mr Heine said the money stays local and goes direct to where it is needed the most and helps to invest in the people and organisations that make Cobar vibrant and strong.

Representatives from the 33 local community and sporting groups who benefited from the Regional Australia Bank Community Partnership Program this year (and Regional Australia Bank staff) at the bonus payment presentation night on Monday at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.

The mine is expected to produce 4.0 metric tonnes of ore containing approximately 328,000 tonnes of zinc, 192,000 tonnes of lead, 12,000 tonnes of copper, 116,000 ounces of gold and 772,000 ounces of silver.

The Federation mine received development consent in 2023 for mining operations until 2036.

Outback Archies winners have been announced The winners of the 2024 Outback Archies Art Prize were announced at the Outback Arts exhibition in Coonamble on Saturday.

This year’s theme of the ‘Legends and Landscapes’ that make our communities so special attracted 88 artworks coming from the far-flung rural areas of not only the Outback Arts region of Bourke, Brewarrina, Bogan, Cobar, Coonamble, Warren and Walgett Shires but also, Gilgandra, Coonabarabran, Narrabri, Moree, Gunnedah, Liverpool Plains, Gwydir, Tamworth, Broken Hill, Wentworth Shire, Central Darling Shire and the Western Unincorporated Area – that’s 18 Local Government Areas in total!

This popular exhibition and art prize is all about celebrating the colour, creativity and spirit of our communities.

The artworks are now on exhibition and are presented in four major artwork categories— Photography, Sculpture, Ceramics and Two Dimensional.

First and second place prizes, along with youth categories, were presented with Sooty Welsh of Coonamble winning the overall Outback Archies prize.

The judges deemed his ‘Connecting to Country’ ceramic pieces to have explored and represented the theme at the highest level, through a well-resolved artwork.

They will now go onto exhibit at the Campbelltown Arts Centre.

CatholicCare provides a broad range of innovative social services in response to the needs of communities in western NSW. We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to contribute to our new Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV) program. This position offers you the opportunity to play a significant role in supporting women and children, their families, and the broader community in addressing domestic and family violence.

With so many players away in Hillston and Trangie, there were only small fields at home on the weekend.

The Super-vet, Max Phillips, who has recently been partnered with lesser golfers, (yours truly), finally found himself in better company and his game blossomed to a new level.

Phillips had a great round of 37 points.

Brien Obray got off to a bad start, venturing into the scrubbiest, far-flung corners of the course, but then he came home with a wet sail, scoring 21 points on the back nine and that won him second place with 36 points.

Garry Wilkin was third, beating Brian Russ on a countback.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won on the 3rd hole by Russ, the 7th by Ray Yench and Phillips claimed the 8th hole win.

There were six players for Sunday’s game.

John Carlaw won the day with 37 points followed by Brian Russ on 34.

Carlaw also took out the 3rd hole Nearest the Pin prize with Chris Powell winning the prize on the 8th hole.

The NSW Sand Green, Four-Ball BestBall Championships will be contested in Narromine this weekend and a number of Cobar golfers will be playing.

Locally there will be golf today, plus a Stableford on Saturday and a Par event on Sunday.—Out of Bounds

The par 3, 7th hole was very memorable for Daphne Cross who decided to ‘lay up’ from the tee box (without trying to get over the creek).

Although the first shot didn’t go as far as she would have liked, the second shot was brilliant and sailed over.

After driving over the bridge, Cross could not see her ball anywhere with her playing partner suggesting “maybe it’s in the hole”.

On further inspection that’s exactly where it was giving her five points for the birdie!

The Hillston Open was also played on Saturday with three Cobar ladies in attendance.

Sally Bannister finished as the 18 hole A Grade Net winner, Narelle Kriz won the 9 hole Scratch event and Robynne Morton was the 9 hole Net winner in A Grade.

A Stroke event will be played today with a Stableford on Saturday and a Par on Sunday.

Team Knight claims the Fours Championship title The highlight in bowls at the Golfie over between Allan Knight, David Knight, Greg Roberts, Doug Hudson and Jim Goonrey. the weekend was without a doubt the 2024 Read and John Goonrey who took on the Three ends into the match and Team Knight Club Championship Fours game played very experienced side of Kyle Roberts, Don scored a five shot advantage to take an early lead.

However, for the next five ends there was only three shots the difference between the two experienced sides.

A couple of threes and a two shot advantage end to Knight n Co then sealed them the win and the title of 2024 Club Fours Bowls Champions!

For two of the team members, it was their second bowls title win this season with Allan Knight also claiming the Singles title, and John Goonrey was one half of the Pairs competition winners.

For Sunday’s social bowls event, two games of pairs were played with John ‘Shark’ Daly and Lex Lowe taking the win with +7.

Judging by the scorecard, their game was very tight with no fewer than four even ends recorded.

The other pairs game between Karen Daly and David Thomas, who were up against Tony Polack and Jim Nicholls, started out strong for Team Daly.

Team Polack however steadily won multiple ends by single shots and the match eventually ended in a draw.

Jim Goonrey’s short deliveries earned him the George The Giraffe Award for this week!

Large Cobar contingent lines up with Cougars this season The Western Women’s Rugby League the team’s B&F points. host their first home game in Cobar at Tom season kicked off on Saturday with the Cas- This Saturday, the Castlereagh Cougars will Knight Memorial Oval. tlereagh Cougars facing off against the Panorama Platypi in Bathurst.

This season, 21 girls from Cobar are representing the Cougars in teams ranging from U12s to Opens.

All of the Cougars teams delivered strong performances with the Under 14s side, which includes Cobar players Rhylee Jeffery, Skyla Fairfull and Ella Oborn (who scored a try), recording a 32-8 win.

Rhylee and Ella shared in the team’s Best & Fairest points.

The Under 12s were defeated 40-12 with Cobar’s Isabelle Gillette scoring a try which was converted by another Cobar player, BriaJune Brookman.

The Under 16s, which includes Cobar’s Rori Urquhart, Maddison Jeffery and Sophie Cain, were defeated 46-0.

The Cougars 18s, who are short on numbers, were also defeated 68-4. Cobar’s Bridgette Negfeldt earned three Best & Fairest points and Molly Carter collected two points and was also named Players’ Player.

Pistol shooting provided an eventful 25m Sports and Centre fire sports competition at the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s shoot last week.

Michael Garbutt officiated as Range Officer for the day with Geoff Clayton delighting other competitors shooting a 44 caliber black powder pistol exhibition.

From the day’s competition, Chris Driver earned himself a new handicap of 44 after he shot 551 off pistol and, with his previous handicap of 113, he finished with a total score of 664. Geoff Passfield finished with a total of 639 after shooting 405 off pistol, (and with his handicap of 234).

Other scores from the day were: Robert Neate 494-48-542; Todd Manns 399-83-482; Paul Lawrence 371-114-485; John Woloczij 278-286-564; and Tracey Lawrence 245-263508.

This week’s event will be a 25m Rapid Fire Shoot.

The Cobar Junior Rugby League Club executive committee remained relatively unchanged following their AGM on Sunday with Graeme Barton returned as president, Haylee Prince was welcomed as a new co-vice president (with Dean Brookman, absent), Emma Barton was returned as registrar, Caitlan Ayoub as publicity officer, Tarra Burke as secretary and Chris Brown as treasurer.

Lady golfers in a sea of pink

The Ladies Golf annual Pink Day team Stableford was played on Sunday with 18 ladies taking part amid a sea of pink for the fundraiser.

The winning team of Pat Polack, Jannine Wilkin and Narelle Kriz scored 38 points and were also picked as the ‘best dressed’ on the day.

Polack was the individual stableford winner with an incredible 42 points (and sore shoulders from carrying her team). She will now sport a lower handicap.

Wen Zhang (40 points) was the runner-up followed by Karen Manns (37), Sally Bannister (36), Narelle Kriz (35) and Julie Livingston on 34 points.

Nearest the Pin winners on the 3rd hole were Kriz, Zhang and Susan Goonrey while on the 11th hole Bannister, Robynne Morton and Goonrey were closest to the flag.

Last Wednesday’s Par round win went to Susan Goonrey who finished the 18 holes with an even card.

Ann Dunn and Pat Polack were next with -1 each.

Julie Livingston, Barb Barklimore and Pat Polack won Nearest the Pin prizes on the 11th hole.

Fran Samios scored 37 points in Saturday’s Stableford for the win over Barb Barklimore and Susan Goonrey (36 points each).

Ann Dunn placed fourth with 34 points.

Big weekend for Cobar golfers

It was a big weekend for some of Cobar’s golfers who logged up about 1,000km over the two days, playing in Hillston on Saturday and then in Trangie on Sunday for the Western Districts Sand Green Championships.

Seven players travelled to Hillston (three ladies and four men) with a couple of players featuring in the winning circle.

In A Grade, Jay Egan came second in the Scratch event and Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence was second in the Net competition.

Peter ‘China’ Brien is enjoying having an elevated handicap these days and he managed to win C Grade, continuing his good form after his win in Gilgandra last week.

According to our roving reporter, Ding, the only thing club captain Alec Fraser could win was a bottle of wine in a raffle and that was after about 20 attempts!

Egan completed a great weekend with another second place in the Scratch event in Trangie on Sunday.

His par round also gave him the title of ‘Champion of Champions’ of the Western Region.

Scott Mayne came second in B Grade and Bian Smith won the B Grade Net event.

The team from Nyngan won the day.

Back in Cobar there were competitions played on three days.

There were five players in the mid-week competition on Wednesday with the improving Travis Buckman winning with a good score of 39 points.

Bian Smith was second with 35 points.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by John Carlaw on the 3rd hole and Buckman won the 8th.
