Cobar streets are quiet during lockdown

The streets are considerably quieter in Cobar this week with many residents abiding by the statewide lockdown measures announced by NSW Premier Gladys Berijiklian on Saturday.

As of midday yesterday there still have been no COVID cases detected in the Cobar Shire, however the virus continues to edge closer to Cobar.

The Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) reports there are now 116 cases active in our Local Health District as of 8pm, Monday August 16.

(There were no detected cases as of last Tuesday when our last edition went to print.)

Of those 116 active cases, 107 are in Dubbo, four are in Walgett, three in Mudgee and two active cases are in Bourke.

Overnight two more cases have been confirmed with one in Gilgandra and one in Narromine.

The WNSWLHD advises the positive cases in Gilgandra and Narromine have both been in isolation and were not in the community while infectious.

After the first positive cases in Dubbo were announced last Wednesday, COVID testing was ramped up in Cobar as anyone who had been in Dubbo since August 1 was asked to isolate as they may have been infected.

This resulted in long lines for testing at the Cobar Respiratory Clinic, the Cobar Health Service and also at Dr Indra’s surgery this past week and, while many have received their negative test results, there are still a number of people in the community who are anxiously awaiting their results.

The WNSWLHD reports 62,450 tests have been carried out in the LHD in the past four weeks.

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton advised yesterday that one case has also been detected in Broken Hill in the Far West LHD. “This person has travelled in the community whilst infectious, including to Wilcannia.” He said a number of guests who attended a funeral in the community with the infected person may have been exposed to the virus.

This week State Member for Barwon Roy Bulter has ramped up his call for people living in the Far West to be vaccinated.

He said at the start of the month, we had one of the lowest percentages of people vaccinated at just 34.1 per cent.

Mr Butler continues to advocate for more vaccines to be made available to our area.

It’s usually pretty busy in the main street around 9am on a weekday, however that’s not been the case these past two days as Cobar residents adhere to the statewide lockdown.

Cobar’s sewerage is under surveillance Schools are open but with minimal supervision Cobar is now part of the statewide sewage surveillance research program in an effort to detect any fragments of COVID-19 in our sewerage.

Cobar Shire Council announced last week they would be collaborating with the NSW Health Public Health Unit to commence regular testing.

Testing began earlier this week and the first results should be available by the end of the week.

Prior to last week, Cobar was not considered to be a high risk community for COVID, however as a direct result of the evolving situation

in our region, it has now been included in this program.

“We appreciate this extended initiative by NSW Health that will enable further monitoring of COVID within our community and acknowledge the efforts of our local medical services, particularly this week with their ability to accommodate such high volumes of testing at short notice,” Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said.

“Please continue to follow the official instructions from NSW Health and get tested if you have been to a high risk location or currently have any cold or flu like symptoms.”

Sombre weather for start of lockdown After we had a pleasant 20.4 degrees on Saturday, a dip in the mercury overnight had locked down residents waking up on Sunday morning to a cold and cloudy 4.9 degrees and it only reached a top of 15.5 during the day.

The light rain we received on Sunday wasn’t however enough to register in the Bureau of Meteorology’s rain gauges.

Daytime temperatures over the past week have been just below average for this time of year (18.1 degrees) with a top of 17.5 degrees

recorded on Thursday while Friday’s top was 17.7 degrees.

Monday started off very fresh with a chilly 4.2 degrees before reaching a top of 19.1 during the day.

Fine conditions are forecast for the days ahead with 18 the expected top for today, while tomorrow should be sunny with a maximum of 20 degrees.

Friday will also be sunny with 23 the expected high while the Bureau predicts the mercury to hit 25 for both Saturday and Sunday.

As part of the statewide lockdown, Cobar’s three schools are all open this week, however they will only have minimal supervision.

All schools have requested parents and carers keep their children at home this week however the schools will remain open for students who cannot be educated at home or whose parents and carers are essential workers.

Cobar High School principal Shane Carter said for those students that absolutely must attend, a number of additional rules will need to be enforced.

“Students/staff must wear a face mask at all times - regardless of whether or not they are indoors or outdoors; students will be socially distanced in seating in the MPC at all times; the canteen will not be open; there will be no play (including ball games); and students will be given the same work that has been sent home for other students to complete,” Mr Carter said.

He praised the school community for their “understanding during this chaotic time”.

There is also minimal supervision for students at Cobar Public School and St John’s School.

Families at all three schools are being supported with learning from home materials and resources.

Cobar’s housing market continues to be buoyant Cobar’s housing market continues to be buoyant with 11 houses sold in just over two hours by David Russell’s Nutrien Harcourts team last week.

by Cobar Infrastructure, were offered for sale via two separate online auctions on Wednesday and Friday.

The highest clearance, $204,000 was for a three bedroom home in Denman Street, which experienced the most competitive bidding.

Five homes/lots were offered at the first auction on Wednesday; two sold at auction, another two, that failed to reach reserve, sold later that day and the fifth lot was re-offered to the market at the second auction on Friday, where it did sell.

There was a buying frenzy for Friday’s auc-

tion with plenty of interest and competition for six lots (along with 22 Mathews Street that had been passed in on Wednesday).

At the fall of the hammer all seven lots had sold above their reserves.

The second highest price paid was $180,000

which was offered for another three bedroom house in Bathurst Street while the average price ($148,000) was what a four bedroom home in Woodiwiss Avenue went for.

The sale of the 11 homes netted the vendor $1.638 million.

DUI driver crashes into parked cars A drunk driver who crashed into two parked cars in the early hours of Saturday morning returned a mid range reading.

Police were called to Leah Street at 3.40am on Saturday after the driver of a white Ford Ranger had hit two vehicles parked in the street.

They also cleaned up those sites (after taking some photos) and reported the matter to police.

“The damage was mainly to the photos on the headstones which had been drawn on with a black permanent marker,” Rebecca said.

She said they also found profanity written on a cement slab base on one grave.

Her warning post on social media had a swift response from concerned residents, many eager to find out if the graves of their loved ones had been among those vandalised.

“Absolutely no excuse for this sort of behaviour” one person wrote while others described it as: “unacceptable and terrible” and “so disrespectful”.

One resident said: “Our loved ones deserve to rest in peace” while another wrote they “just can’t believe someone would do this”.

A number of former Cobar residents with relatives who have been laid to rest at the Cobar Cemetery were concerned as they were not able to go and see if their loved ones’ graves had been damaged.

Their minds were put to rest when a local resident offered to go and check for them.

Police attended the cemetery on Friday morning and their investigations into the incident are continuing.

Strong field of buyers attend Cobar’s 5th annual ram sale

The 5th Annual Cobar Ram Sale, conducted by the Nutrien Harcourts Cobar team last Tuesday, had a strong field of buyers and attracted a crowd of more than 300 on the day.

This year’s sale incorporated a Boer Goat Production Sale with Nutrien Ag Russell’s livestock agent, Luke Scales, reporting it was a much stronger market this year.

“It comes on the back of high meat values which resulted in a new record top for the sale at $7,800 which is $3,800 in excess of last year’s top price,” Luke said.

“The 2021 sale averaged $3,015.84 which is up on close to $1,000 on last year’s strong result.

“We saw over 15 rams sell above $5,000 and 27 rams selling from $4,000 to $5,000.

“The biggest majority of the offering sold between $2,000 to $3,500,” Luke reported.

Dell Dorpers had the top priced lot with a $7,800 ram which was purchased by a Nutrien Charleville client, Smit Dorpers.

“Their 12 ram consignment averaged $5,383.

“Repeat buyers from the western division, such as the Old family of Bourke, also took a trailer full of the Dell rams home.

“Local Cobar stud, Etiwanda White Dorpers, also had a cracking day selling their consignment to average $3,680 with their top Ram selling to $4,800,” Luke reported.

“Another Cobar local stud, Kerrigundi White Dorpers, had a great day with their consignment averaging $2,200.”

There was the addition of the Sheepmaster breed to the sale this year with a top price achieved by Cobar local stud, Janaree Sheepmaster, selling for $2,200.

“This year we saw a small consignment of the Bulmar Ultrawhites with everyone blown away by the length and capacity of those display sires penned outside, the ultrawhites topped at $6,400 to average $4,600,” Luke said.

In the goats section, 24 purebred standard Boer does and 14 fullblood standard Boer bucks were offered on behalf of Dusty Downs and Cobar locals, the Allen family of Davrik Boers.

“With a larger crowd we ended up at a total clearance with the registered does all making $350-$370, the unregistered purebreds selling for $300 and the bucks from both vendors making from $500-$750.

“It’s safe to say, Cobar is the sale to come to when looking for quality rams,” Luke said.

Students and teachers get the chop and raise over $5,000 Cobar High School’s (CHS) Student Representative Council (SRC) raised over $5,000 at their World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser event for The Leukemia Foundation last week.

The SRC well and truly exceeded their fundraising goal of $2,500 and finished the day with a massive tally of $5,332.13.

Six brave and courageous volunteers shaved their heads throughout the day when each of the fundraising target milestones were met.

The students were first to line up with Braiden Jones the first cab off the rank losing his locks at $250; Mitch Chaplain was next for the razor at the $500 mark; then it was Declan Byrne’s turn when the total got to $1,000 and at the $1,500 mark, Xander Jeffrey had his head shaved.

The teachers then entered the challenge with Mr Thomas Plater’s mullet disappearing when the total reached $2,000 and Mr Rhys Lloyd farewelled his flowing mane at $2,500.

With the total continuing to grow, three others stepped up to be fleeced with students Tiana Jones and Joey Thomas along with the school’s principal, Mr Shane Carter, getting a close crop.

CHS teacher, Mrs Alexandra Brown, helped to coordinate the event which involved the whole school community.

“Students were able to watch the shaving as it unfolded, have their own hair sprayed, and grab a bite to eat and a drink from the SRC run barbecue,” Mrs Brown said.

With 50 Australians diagnosed with blood cancer every day, she said the funds raised by the SRC will go towards supporting families

financially as well as towards funding vital the day and the SRC very much appreciates research into blood cancer treatment. the generosity and support they received from Mrs Brown said students and staff enjoyed the community.

Who are our essential workers?

As part of the state lockdown rules introduced on Saturday, stay at home rules apply if you live and usually work in Cobar.

If you are however classified as an “essential worker” you are permitted to leave home to go to work (if you cannot work from home).

In addition to people employed in health care and social assistance, essential workers are also members of NSW Police, Fire and Rescue NSW, SES, NSW Rural Fire Service and Ambulance Service of NSW or other emergency service workers.

Other essential workers include those in education and schooling, early childhood education and care, and people employed by Service NSW and who work in Local Government.

Also listed as essential are the areas of agriculture, a range of manufacturing businesses, transport, postal and warehousing, and those

employed in providing electricity, gas, water and waste services.

Information and media services (including The Cobar Weekly) are also classed as being essential.

Construction, infrastructure and mining industries are not captured by the nonessential services restrictions, and can therefore continue to operate.

The list of essential businesses includes: supermarkets and bottleshops; stores that predominantly sell health, medical, maternity and infant supplies; pharmacies and chemists; petrol stations; car hire; banks and financial institutions; hardware, nurseries and building supplies; agricultural and rural supplies; pet supplies; post offices and newsagents; and office supplies.

Annual land and stock returns now due Landholders across New South Wales are being reminded to lodge their Local Land Services (LLS) Annual Land and Stock Returns before the end of this month.

The returns are a statutory requirement and were posted to thousands of landholders in June.

Acting Chair of the LLS statewide board, Allison Harker said by filling in the Annual Land and Stock Return, landholders help build a picture of agricultural land use and livestock numbers across NSW.

“This combined effort assists in monitoring flocks and herds for emergency animal diseases,” Ms Harker said.

“Information about livestock, including pigs, horses and poultry helps us assist customers with support such as emergency fodder, yards or shelter when emergencies or disasters strike.

“Annual Land and Stock Returns can be submitted online and should be the number of stock or birds on the property as at 30 June, much like a census captures a moment in time.”

COVID-19 update: Virtual Council Meetings On March 25, 2020 the Local Government Act 1993 was amended to allow Councils to meet remotely to reduce the Coronavirus (COVID-19) risk. The amendment allows our Council Meetings to be closed to the public if a livestreamed webcast is made available.

The Council Meeting on August 26, 2021 will be closed to the public and livestreamed from 5pm. Until further notice, all future Council meetings will be closed to the public.

The Liquor Accord brings in new rule In response to an increase in incidents of violence towards staff and patrons in clubs and pubs, the Cobar Liquor Accord will be taking a tougher approach and banning patrons.

At a recent Cobar Liquor Accord meeting attended by representatives of all local licensed venues, Cobar Shire Council, the local police and Licencing Officer Erik Jensen, all agreed that tougher action was needed.

Liquor Accord chairperson, Linda Carter (secretary manager of the Services Club) said a motion was passed that any act of physical assault or violence toward a staff member or patron will earn the perpetrator a three month ban from all venues. (This also includes bottle shops.)

“This is one of the older rules we implemented years ago and it was proven to act as a deterrent from this type of behaviour,” Mrs Carter said.

“Each venue can also implement their own rules if they find some behaviour unacceptable. Abusive behaviour, physical aggression, underage drinking are all behaviours that are unacceptable and will incur some form of barring from one or all venues.

“These behaviours put the venues at risk of fines and or closure,” she said.

“Most licensed venues agree that this behaviour is only carried out by the same few people each time.

“Most patrons are just happy to be able to go and have a drink with friends and go home happy,” she said.

“The rules that apply currently make it hard to run a business successfully as fines that can be imposed on venues and patrons for no QR code sign in, not wearing masks, failure to leave a licensed premises and serving an intoxicated person, to name a few.

“Venues can also be shut down for noncompliance,” Mrs Carter said.

The liquor accord group meets every two months to keep up to date on what is happening in the licensed premises in Cobar, to discuss changes to licence conditions and to implement harm minimising strategies to use in each premises.

Mrs Carter said the new rule will ensure that next time you and your friends go out for a good time, you can be assured you won’t have to tolerate any unacceptable behaviour from those around you.

• Rumours were circulating in Cobar yester-

day afternoon that there were “some” Covid cases detected in Cobar. We checked the information with State Member for Barwon Roy Butler at 2pm who said his office had not received any advice from the Western NSW Local Health District of any fragments detected in the sewerage or cases in Cobar.

“That could easily change without notice,” Roy said. So as of yesterday, we can report that rumour was unfounded. The best thing we can all do is to stay home and stay safe!

Cobar Catholic parish is hosting two visitors from Kenya Cobar Catholic parish priest Fr Paul Finucane is currently hosting two visitors from Kenya, Alexander Wambua and Onesmus Kyalo Fr Paul called into our office last week to introduce his visitors, who are seminarians (students of theology) and preparing for the Catholic priesthood.

The pair arrived in Australia in January 2020 to study at the Catholic Institute of Sydney and are sponsored by the WilcanniaForbes Catholic Diocese.

Onesmus said being in Cobar is a “refuge” for them as with COVID restrictions locking down Sydney, the Bishop decided they should go out into the bush.

They’ve been in Cobar for the past three weeks and are continuing with their theology studies online and via Zoom classes.

While staying in Cobar they are assisting Fr Paul with his duties and also learning a few things from him.

Onesmus said Fr Paul has shared with them stories and experiences about his life as a priest in both Cobar and Sydney and he’s also shared a number of meals with them and some of his cooking tips.

“Fr Paul’s a very good cook,” he said.

Onesmus said coming from a rural area in Kenya he feels very much at home in Cobar.

“When I go anywhere within the Diocese be it Narromine, Broken Hill or Cobar - I just feel at home” he said.

Alexander said he feels the same.

“I find people here to be very hospitable, very loving and caring.

“They can listen, share stories and talk with you,” Alexander said.

“The other day one of the parishioners had a bad day and we were invited to have coffee together, which was a good sign.

“It felt good, it felt like being at home,” he said.

Onesmus said he was inspired to become a priest when he was in primary school after he saw how a local priest had interacted with children and also the old people in his village.

He said he still had the desire to be a priest when he was in high school.

“I told my mum about it and she said she was going to pray about it and yeah that is how I ended up in the seminary.”

Onesmus said he met the Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes (who had travelled to Kenya for ordination) and that’s how he ended up being sponsored to come to Australia.

Alexander said the priesthood vocation came to him as he wanted to give back something to society.

“I was told you have to pray to know whether this is your calling to become a priest.”

He said he prayed for a long time and, at one stage, had second thoughts “because as a priest, you’re not going to have a wife”.

He said while it meant that there would be a lot of sacrifices he would need to make, he decided that was the path he would choose to take.

He said being a priest means he can have time to be with people.

“To help them when they need me and to listen to them and help if I can. I feel it’s part of my philosophy, that I am who I am because

of someone and because of other people. I need to do something for others,” Alexander said.

Fr Paul said he’d very much enjoyed having his two young guests stay at the presbytery over the past three weeks.

“As a diocese here in Wilcannia-Forbes, we are very blessed to have priests from Kenya, from all over the world actually, our priests come from lots of different places.

“They’ve been very generous to come here, and to be on a mission.”

Fr Paul said he was pleased that the Cobar community had also been generous in welcoming the two young men to the town.

Onesmus said even if people don’t know them, they still say ‘Hi’ which he said “really warms his heart”.

Non-urgent surgery now is postponed

Major milestone in wild dog control Landholders involved in the Professional Wild Dog Controller (PWDC) Program have recently achieved a major milestone with the 100th wild dog removed from the landscape.

The program, which is coordinated by Western Local Land Services, has involved six PWDCs working with local landholders to control wild dogs, as well as increase landholder capacity with regards to identifying wild dog signs, understand wild dog behaviours and management options.

To the end of July 2021, the Program, which was launched in February 2020, has seen 103 wild dogs controlled, as well as 48 feral pigs, eight feral cats and four foxes.

landholders and PWDCs involved for achieving the feat.

“This innovative program has been a great addition to the wild dog management tools available to landholders and it’s been great to see it so well supported, and ultimately, so successful to date,” Mr Baird said.

He reported that landholders from 37 properties have had a PWDC on their property, and more properties have registered to be involved in future.

“For those yet to be involved in the program, there is currently an initiative where landholders can have a PWDC visit their property for a day for no charge.

“The purpose of the free trapper for a day is to increase the capacity of landholders to identify wild dog signs and discuss management options.”

Mr Baird said to find out more about this opportunity or the program in general, landholders should speak with their local biosecurity officer or contact Western Local Land Services.

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak and increasing number of local cases, the Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) is temporarily postponing non-urgent elective surgery in our health services.

All emergency surgery and urgent elective surgery will continue to be performed during this challenging period.

Cobar residents who were to undergo nonurgent elective surgery at Dubbo Base Hospital, Mudgee Health Service, Bathurst, Bourke, or Orange and Parkes public hospitals will be affected by this announcement.

WNSWLHD’s media manager Matt Findlay said this response was a necessary step to ensure WNSWLHD can keep staff, patients and members of the public safe and that there are hospital beds available should the need arise.

“Those waiting for non-urgent elective surgery who are impacted by the changes will be contacted and encouraged to contact their referring doctor should their condition deteriorate, so they can be re-prioritised to a more urgent category if required,” Mr Findlay said.

Non-urgent elective surgery has also been temporarily postponed at public hospitals in the Greater Sydney regions since the beginning of the month.

“The NSW Government is providing an additional $30 million to support private hospitals to undertake additional elective surgery on behalf of the NSW Health system to ensure that patients who have their non-urgent elective surgery postponed will be scheduled for surgery as soon as possible.

“The NSW public health system is highly integrated and local health districts throughout the state work together on a daily basis to ensure the optimal delivery of healthcare services across the state,” Mr Findlay said.

“There is currently sufficient ICU capacity for all patients who require intensive care, with more than 500 beds available throughout the system.

“As part of its comprehensive planning for its pandemic response, NSW Health has the capacity to quadruple its current ICU capacity if required. There would also be ventilators available for each of these ICU beds.

“The NSW Government has committed more than $4 billion to the NSW health system to manage the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020.”

Warnings about the potential onset of a mouse plague come springtime have further justified the advocacy work of NSW Farmers in securing a $150 million state government support package.

The CSIRO is advising farmers in NSW to get out of the ute to monitor paddocks and bait cards as predictive modelling forecasts showed a high risk of a mouse outbreak in spring.

NSW Farmers vice president Xavier Martin said mouse activity is already on the increase in some areas, according to the latest Mouse Update from the CSIRO and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

“The August update states that mouse numbers are moderate to high in parts of the Central West and highly variable in northern NSW, with serious concerns about the impact on chickpea crops,” Mr Martin said.

“I am starting to see increased activity on my own farm, and I am hearing the same from a lot of members.

Airborne survey is now completed Planning has The NSW Government’s airborne magnetic and radiometric (AMR) survey of the Cobar and Nyngan area is now finished.

The Department of Regional NSW’s Geological Survey with Geoscience Australia coordinated the AMR survey over the past few months over the greater Cobar and Nyngan region.

AMR surveys measure small variations in the earth’s magnetic field caused by different rock types and the naturally occurring radiation coming from the ground.

The AMR survey used passive sensors, which are non-invasive and do not disturb the ground.

The survey has filled gaps in the Department of Regional NSW’s existing coverage, and the information collected will improve their knowledge of the rocks, faults, soils and mineral resources of the area.

They hope the new data they gain from this survey will help new discoveries to maintain the thriving mineral industry in the region and improve their understanding of groundwater in the area.

Western Local Land Services (Western LLS) is ramping up its planning with pest management groups, Landcare groups and other stakeholders getting ready for the next seasonal baiting program for wild dogs which will occur in November.

The spring seasonal baiting program will again involve targeted aerial and ground baiting campaigns.

The coordinated program will ensure wild dogs and other pest animals like feral cats and foxes will be exposed to a bait over a matter of days regardless of where in the region they are.

Landholders in the Western LLS region that are not already a member of a pest management or Landcare group and would like to participate in either aerial baiting or ground baiting should contact their local Western LLS biosecurity officer who can fill them in on all the details.

Females are flocking to rugby league Dartaholics were The Castlereagh Cougars Women’s Rugby League Club is currently taking registrations from players for the coming season and are seeing a response that reflects the increasing popularity of the game across NSW. The NSW Rugby League (NSWRL) recently announced that female participation had hit record numbers this season, with around 23,000 signing up to play the game, compared to 18,915 in 2019.

The NSWRL reports regardless of whether it’s a town of 200 or 200,000, they are seeing more and more women wanting to play Rugby League which can only benefit the game in the future.

The interested players are spread across both metropolitan Sydney and Regional NSW. This year the Cougars have five teams to fill and club president Sam Turnbull said they have already had to close the books for the Opens and Under 16s teams as they had reached their capacity of 22 players allowed under the rules.

“We’ve had lots and lots of interest this year.

“Registrations have been going really well but we still have places in the 18s, 14s, and 12s,” Ms Turnbull said.

As well as girls and women from the traditional Castlereagh towns of Coonamble, Gilgandra, Coonabarabran, Baradine, Coolah, Dunedoo and Warren, the Cougars have this year picked up players from the Barwon Darling area.

“We have one from Walgett, a few Bourke girls in the Opens and the younger age groups and a good solid group from Cobar this year,” she said.

With the first round due to start next month, Ms Turnbull said her committee was about to

release their training dates when the latest Covid lockdown was announced.

“We’re currently waiting to see what happens,” she said.

The NSWRL reports there has been a 104 per cent growth in the number of female players across the Group 14 zone since 2019 with the Cougars, who started in 2018 with just two grades, contributing at least 20 per cent.

Ms Turnbull said almost all other clubs in Group 14 have experienced similar growth and she expects the numbers will continue to increase as the season gets underway.

This season the Cougars will line up against the Mid West Brumbies (formerly Mudgee Dragons), Panorama Platypi (Bathurst), Wiradjuri Goannas (Dubbo), the Orange Vipers and Woodbridge (the small central west towns reaching from Canowindra to Peak Hill).

“I’m pretty sure some of the Goannas grades are full because we’ve had expressions of interest from girls in Narromine and Nyngan who are within the Wiradjuri boundary,” Ms Turnbull said.

“Once they’re full, the rules allow their players to try Castlereagh or Woodbridge.”

The 2021 competition is to include eight games across a round and a half.

“If we get started it should be good, especially with the Cougars coming out as a stand-alone club.”

Up until this year they came under the umbrella of the men’s Castlereagh Rugby League and the change means they can focus more on female participation, growing the pathways for young girls coming through and preparing girls to take advantage of the broader opportunities in rugby league.—contributed

The Golfie Dartaholics were back in the winners’ circle again in the local darts competition last Wednesday night.

This time they accounted for the Golfie Gophers with a 9-2 win.

RSL Diggers got the better of Western Renegades to win their game 8-3 last week while the Empire Barflies claimed an easy win from Golfie Spearchuckers due to a forfeit.

Junior league’s future is uncertain Due to COVID-19 cases occurring in Dubbo in the past week, the future of the Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League competition is in doubt.

“We are all unsure if we will get any finals footy, DDJRL will do its best and only time will tell,” the league announced on Saturday.

The Cobar Roosters club has been praised by the league for their efforts in fielding seven sides in 2021.

Aggressive play by Ladies golf comp interrupted again veterans puts the young players off The men golfers could only manage one day of competition golf last weekend before the state went into lockdown late on Saturday afternoon.

A field of 15 players contested the 6th round of the Captain’s Trophy event on Saturday.

It appears the younger players on the day were traumatised by the veteran golfers’ aggressive style of play.

Garry Wilkin continued his good form from last week’s second place in the Club Championships and went one better this week to win the Stroke event with a sub par round.

In second place was Steve Manns with a score of 66 net.

Both of these players should now be off lower handicaps the next time they play.

Bill Fugar snuck into third place with a score of net 71 while in 4th place was the multitalented Bian Smith with 72 net.

Mr Consistency Max Phillips grabbed 5th spot.

Nearest to the Pins prizes were won by Alec Fraser on the 3rd hole; Bill Fugar (7th), Mark Fraser (8th) and Steve Manns on the 15th hole.

Two Matchplay games were contested on Saturday with the old boys also getting up in both matches.

Bill Fugar defeated Greg Clark, 5 and 4, while Bian Smith was too good for newly crowned club champion Jay Egan, 3 and 2.

Covid contingency for Castlereagh comp With the 2021 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition currently suspended due to NSW Health regulations, a meeting of the clubs on Monday night has produced a COVID contingency plan.

Castlereagh League spokesperson Bryson Luff said three Local Government Areas were locked down last week which affected the last round of the competition, and following advice from NSW Rugby League, the Round 18 games were suspended.

Since then the entire state has been placed

under Stay at Home orders and what lies ahead is unknown.

The clubs met on Monday night via Zoom to discuss where they go from here.

“Obviously our hands are tied until we know how long it will be until we can resume playing,” Luff said.

“But we needed to talk about a number of possible options for the completion of our 2021 competition, and put a time frame on when we move from one option to the next.”

He said, in the hope of bringing the pan-

demic affected 2021 competition to some form of suitable conclusion, the clubs (with advice from NSW Rugby League) have adopted a contingency plan.

“Round 18 games, that were due to be played on August 14, have all been declared nil-all draws with one competition point being awarded to each team,” Luff said.

In terms of teams making the League Tag semi finals, this means the Cobar Roosterettes have finished in 5th place with the Gilgandra Pink Panthers eliminated from the semi finals after placing 6th. (Cobar and Gilgandra finished on equal points and were to have played each other in the last round which was cancelled.)

Cobar was not affected by the last round nilall result in the First Grade competition after the Roosters finished the season clearly out in front. They had claimed the minor premiership two weeks out from the end of the regular competition.

The results of the final round only affected how the 4th (Gulgong) and 5th (Coonabarabran) placed teams would finish.

Baradine, in 6th place, was well out of semis contention anyway.

Luff said with a view to allowing at least a couple of training sessions before resuming playing the following “cut off” dates will apply: if training/playing can resume by mid September, a five team semi final series can be played; if training/playing is not allowed until the end of September then a four team semi final series can be played over three weeks; if it’s October before the season can re -start, there’s an option for a four team semi final to be played over two weeks; and the final option (for a mid October restart) is only the top two sides would play a grand final.
