Local students invited to join Sydney service Cobar High School students and teachers were invited to perform at the St Marys RSL Sub Branch Remembrance Day service in Sydney on Friday.

The invitation came after the Cobar group’s live recording of their performance on Anzac

Day this year of a very moving ‘Hallelujah Veterans Version’, went viral.

The performance (with words by Sailor Jerri and music by Leonard Cohen) caught the attention of many with the video shared on social media where it received over 150,000 views.

Among those to view it were St Marys SubBranch members and veterans, with Steve Tolsher and Tony Fryer reaching out to the school inviting them to perform at their Remembrance Day service this year.

“The service was attended by a number of dignitaries, local schools, where Cobar High School was the special guest,” music teacher Laura Andrew said.

“Students’ emotive performance played an important part in the service, the music and lyrics evoking reflection for those who have served.

“The St Marys Sub-Branch members showed incredible hospitality, sharing their knowledge and showing an interest in students’ own experiences, education and family.”

Ms Andrew said meeting the St Marys SubBranch members, gave students the opportunity to appreciate the human sacrifice of war and to remember those who we have lost.

“For some, the trip also sparked a new understanding and appreciation for their own family members who have been involved in war,” Ms Andrew said.

Cobar to be part of a pre-Kinder trial Families in Cobar (along with others in Mount Druitt, Wagga Wagga, Kempsey, Nambucca, Bourke and Coonamble) will be the first to benefit from the NSW Government’s landmark reform to introduce a universal pre-Kindergarten year of education for every child in NSW. Early childhood services in these first seven locations will begin rolling out the first stage of the universal pre-Kindergarten policy in early 2023.

With local early childhood services already at full capacity, Cobar may however have problems trying to find an interested provider.

More locations across NSW will be added as part of the state-wide implementation of a full new year of education for children by 2030.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the $5.8 billion 10-year investment in universal preKindergarten is of a scale not seen before in Australia and will benefit our youngest learners’ physical, cognitive, social and emotional development.

“This is a life changing investment that the NSW Government is delivering to ensure our children benefit from a full year of quality preschool education at no cost to parents,” Mr Perrottet said.

“The Liberals and Nationals in government are building a brighter future for NSW, with international evidence demonstrating a quality, play-based preschool program underpins a child’s long-term success.”

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said families and services in the first stage of the universal pre-K reforms will help shape the rollout of the initiative across the state.

“This first stage of universal preKindergarten will allow us to gather crucial information ahead of implementation of the program across NSW,” Ms Mitchell said.

“We are continuing to work collaboratively with families, peak bodies, service providers and schools to develop the best model of universal pre-Kindergarten for NSW.” Eligible services are invited to have their say and ask questions at several workshops to be held in pilot regions this month.

The NSW Government’s $15.9 billion Early Years Commitment announced as part of the 2022-23 budget will deliver a brighter future for every child in NSW. Through the introduction of a universal preKindergarten year, a suite of Brighter Beginnings initiatives to support the first 2,000 days of life, a workforce package for early childhood educators and Affordable Preschool subsidies available to all families, the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government is ensuring NSW is the best state to live, work and raise a family.

In his speech last week, Mr Butler explained that Barry’s family have been in Cobar for almost 150 years.

“He is a true local—an Iron Ringer. Barry has held positions on countless community committees and has dedicated thousands of hours of his time serving the community,” Mr Butler said.

“One major achievement is the Cobar Miners Memorial, commemorating miners who have lost their lives in Cobar mines or from mining-related illnesses.

“The project took over seven years to complete, and opened on 19 June 2021.

“Barry would say that it would not have been possible without Virginia ‘Ginny’ Knight, his wife.

“Ginny was his supporter and an amazing community contributor in her own right.

“Ginny once saw a fence full of poppies honouring war veterans and thought that Cobar needed its own version.

“It officially opened on 13 August this year.

“Ginny Knight passed away in October 2021, but her legacy lives on with the Cobar Poppy Fence and other projects.

“Barry is not done yet. He is assisting with the new Cobar War Memorial, along with other projects.”

Mr Butler commended Barry and Ginny on Ginny and Barry Knight at the official opening of the Cobar Miners Memorial last June. their tireless efforts for the good health of the community of Cobar.

Visitor numbers have dipped a bit Cobar Shire Council’s Tourism Manag-

er Demi Smith reports visitors numbers to Cobar in October were down on previous months.

In her report to last week’s Tourism Advisory Committee meeting, Demi said October’s visitor statistics were almost half of the numbers recorded in September.

The total number of visitors to Cobar in October was 2,152 with 898 going through The Great Cobar Museum while 1,254 called into the Visitor Information Centre (VIC).

Comparing that to September (which had the highest number of visitors this year), we had a total of 4,122 visitors, with 1,498 visiting the museum and 2,624 at the VIC. It’s the first dip in visitor numbers to Cobar in the past six months with a developing trend of growing visitor numbers, mostly exceeding 3,000 each month.

“It’s our quietest month since March,” Demi reported.

“Lots of travellers have been affected by the weather and road closures around the state.

“It did affect our Grey Mardi Gras and Miner’s Ghost festivals last month a bit with a few people disappointed they couldn’t get here.

“We also think high fuel prices may be also playing a part,” she said.

With a total of 25,576 people visiting Cobar since January, Demi said they are however still on track to record a bumper year for visitors.

Women in business awards

Indy Negfeldt, the young owner of local business Cathead Country, was a finalist in this year’s Australian Women’s Small Business Champions Awards. Indy and members of her family attended the awards dinner in Sydney on Saturday night. Indy said while she may not have won her category, she’s “incredibly grateful” to have been named as a finalist in such an outstanding group of women. Indy said she was inspired by many of the speeches of the award winners and she really learnt a lot from the whole experience. ▪ Photo contributed

Cobar CWA chooses best entries from cooking competition Four Cobar Country Women’s Association (CWA) members with winning entries in this year’s The Land Cookery Competition will progress to judging at Group level.

The local judging of this year’s entries in the annual cooking competition took part on Saturday at the CWA Rooms in Becker Street with Haylee Prince from Classique Catering, presiding over the judging.

Colleen Boucher won the Butter Cake and Boiled Fruit Cake sections; Kerrie Stuart received first places for her Carrot Cake and Chocolate Cake; Rebecca Howard placed second in the Chocolate Cake section; and Ellie Traynor had a first for Decorated Cupcakes in the Junior Section.

Judge Haylee Prince was guided by the CWA’s competition rules which dictates what ingredients can (and can’t) be used, the size of baking tins, rules around iced and un-iced entries as well as things to look for in finished products (ie cooked evenly through).

There are 13 sections in the competition along with a Junior Section for competitors 18 years and younger.

The four local members will now go on to compete against other cooks in the CWA Far Western Group in a couple of weeks time.

Cobar CWA members Jean Poulter, Rebecca Howard, Mary Madden and Kate Evans with the winning entries in this year’s The Land Cookery Competition. Rebecca and three other members, Colleen Boucher, Kerrie Stuart and Ellie Traynor, will now go on to compete at the Far West Group in a couple of weeks.

Humid conditions

Cobar has experienced a few days of high humidity over the past week with the relative humidity reaching 76 percent on Saturday.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, during the summer in Cobar, the average relative humidity is about 30 percent in the afternoon and about 50 percent at 9am.

Many areas of the Cobar Shire received thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over the past week with Cobar recording a total of 44mm of rain in town, with some residents even reporting hailstones during the storms.

Daytime temperatures over the past week have been varied with 29.4 degrees recorded last Thursday, Friday was 30.1 while Saturday’s top was 30.4 degrees Sunday reached 28 before dipping down to a cooler 22 degrees on Monday.

Rainfall over recent weeks and months has also caused prolonged flooding along the Darling River and it is expected to peak in Western NSW at its highest level in more than a decade on Sunday.

As at 8am yesterday morning the Darling River at Tilpa was measured at 12.72m and rising.

According to reports, the river has not been this high since it reached 13 metres (in Bourke) in 1998.

Sunny conditions are forecast for Cobar for the week ahead with 18 the expected top temperature for today while tomorrow should reach 21 degrees.

The outlook for the weekend is sunny with a slight chance of showers on both days.

The mercury should rise to 30 on Saturday while Sunday is forecast to be cooler with 24 degrees the top daytime temperature.

Unity games trialed in Cobar

The Cobar Youth Centre ran a trial Unity Games day at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre on Monday. The day brought people of all ages together to play a variety of games such as chocolate pong, bingo and Twister as well as completing challenges such as cup stacking and playdough building. Organiser, Youthie staff member Louise McKervey, said the games day was based on the ABC TV shows, ‘Old People’s Home for Teens/Four Year Olds’. “It has multi faceted benefits,” Louise said. “It gets older people more active, more social and more involved as role models.

Applications are now open for the 2023 NSW Women’s Week Grants Program, with $100,000 in funding available for women-focused events held in March next year.

Free vaccination clinics rolled out

Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) is currently running free vaccination clinics across the western region to help protect people against the Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus in time for the summer mosquito season.

The first of the free clinics was held in Cobar yesterday with more clinics running in Nyngan today and Warren tomorrow.

Anyone who has an identified JE risk (ie spends significant time outdoors working, recreation or education) and missed the clinic in Cobar yesterday, may book in with their GP for the JE vaccine.

“GPs may require a few days notice so they can order the vaccine,” a WNSLHD spokesperson said.

“The vaccines is also recommended for people travelling to some overseas countries, but these vaccines are available for purchase on the private market.”

Everyone is urged to stay vigilant and take precautions against mosquito bites altogether because, aside from JE, mosquitoes carry a range of viruses for which there are no vaccines.

From this week pharmacists will also be able to administer JE vaccines.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler said it’s part of a new plan by the NSW Government to allow pharmacists to prescribe some medications for 23 common conditions.

“Pharmacists will also be able to administer an additional six vaccines to patients, including for Japanese encephalitis, typhoid and hepatitis A and B. “The plan is designed to help with access to General Practitioners, taking some of the pressure off waiting lists to see a doctor and off queues at emergency departments,” Mr Butler said.

“While there is opposition from GPs the plan has the backing of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia.

“While every measure to help cut waiting times for GPs is welcomed, the quality of care for people accessing these services needs to be maintained.

“Pharmacists study for several years and often undertake a paid internship.

“I have relied many times on advice from Pharmacists - a trusted profession,” Mr Butler said.

Competing in the indoor Rowing and Dragon Boat race events, Rhonda achieved two Gold and two Silver medals and Dave came home with two Silver. Well done to both of them.

• Cobar Public School in currently in the process of electing their 2023 school captains and vice captains. There’s a bit of a change to the process this year. To ensure that the most able and suitable candidates are elected to fill the roles, the school is moving away from boy and girl captains, and instead the four roles will be filled by whomever is selected by their peers as most suitable.

• We hear the Unity Games Day at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre on Monday was a lot of fun. Organiser Louise McKervey said the day was a trial run to gauge interest, to see what sort of activities people liked, how many people they could handle in a session and how it worked in their space.

She said they are open to suggestions from locals of all ages to improve this Intergenerational Program.

• We were short on space in our sport section this week and so the Ladies Golf report is included in the Bush Tele this week. T’d Off reports that it seems to be déjà vu when it comes to reporting on ladies golf matches with rain putting a dampener on the weekend’s matches.

• Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton is upset that local shows across the Parkes electorate like the Cobar Show, will no longer benefit from additional Federal Government funding, with the Labor Government confirming it is scrapping the Regional Agriculture Shows Development Program. Mr Coulton said the money had been “reprioritised”. He said Labor had already scrapped water and major infrastructure commitments in regional NSW and this was “another kick in the guts to communities in the Parkes electorate”.

• Congratulations to the winners of the CSA Safework Colouring Competition. First place went to Leala Engelbrecht with Liam Cain second and third was Juan Engelbrecht.

• State Member for Barwon Roy Butler recently delivered his final Private Members Statement for the year (and also his last for his first term of office) in Parliament. He said it had been quite a term, beginning with the worst drought in history, followed by a mouse plague, a pandemic and now floods.

CSA Mine is a high-grade underground copper mine located in Cobar, Central Western NSW. Employing over 500 people, CSA Mine is now looking for a new member to join the team. We are currently seeking an experienced Leading Hand – Surface Mechanical Tradesperson to join our team.

Yabbies spend more time in the pool A big second half Warmer weather last week enabled the Cobar Yabbies to spend a bit more time in the water.

Since the swimming season opened at the beginning of October, the weather hasn’t been the best and the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club members have opted out of swimming their traditional Brace Relay novelty event each week.

They did however revive the tradition at last Tuesday night’s competition swim with founding member Bob Clark teeing up with Fr Paul Finucane to finish as winners.

The pair were the closest to their nominated time and walked across the pool just 2.66 seconds outside their nominated time.

Greg Dimond teamed up with visiting teaching prac student Julian McDonald to finish second (2.94 off) and John Carswell and Paul Swainston were third on 3.15.

In the serious swims, Murray Harland claimed bragging rights after wins in both the 30 metres and 100 metres freestyle handicapped events.

Harland won the 30m with a time of 0.06 seconds outside his nominated time with Carswell and Dimond finishing equal second after both recorded 0.19 seconds off their times.

Harland was well ahead of the field in the 100m with 0.29 seconds off his time.

McDonald finished next best on 0.56 and

Former Cobar bowler selected in Australian bowls squad Former resident Chris Rosanes, who won numerous lawn bowls titles at Club, District and Zone levels while he was living in Cobar, has recently been selected in the Australian Lawn Bowls Squad.

Chris moved interstate to Brisbane in 2018 and since then he’s well and truly made his mark on Queensland’s bowling greens.

The 11 year old kid that tried out social bowls on the Cobar Services Club greens in 2001 with his mum and dad is now based at Club Pine Rivers, where he’s won 11 Club Championships.

That includes four consecutive Singles titles, four consecutive Pairs titles, two Fours titles and a Triples title. In 2020 he won the QLD State Singles Gold Medal and an Australian Singles Bronze Medal.

Last year he was part of the QLD Premier League Champions team and this year he’s won the QLD State Fours Gold Medal and, last month playing with his QLD team, they won the Australian Sides Champions Alley Shield.

(QLD hadn’t won the Alley Shield since 2014.)

Despite all his success, being selected into the Australian squad came as a bit of a surprise for Chris.

“The Australian Squad news was unexpected, something that was never on my mind of achieving,” Chris told The Cobar Weekly.

“But now that I am in the squad, it would be an honour and a privilege to wear the green and gold and represent Australia, whether that be in a Test Series, World Bowls and ultimately, Commonwealth Games.”

In conjunction with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Chris will be training with the Pathways Squad.

“It will involve camps, high performance programs and test matches against each other and, possibly other nations if I’m lucky enough to be chosen,” he said.

“It will be extremely difficult to break into the main team with the calibre that is in the squad.

“But who knows what the future holds!”

Chris said since moving to Brisbane there’s been a lot more opportunities to play bowls.

“Being the Sunshine State, bowls events are on all year round and I also train 2-3 times a week.”

Chris will now have the guidance of the Australian National Coaching Staff in Gary Willis, Karen Murphy and Lynsey Clarke.

He said there were a lot of people who helped him get to this point including former coaches/ mentors Dave Edwards, John Rodis and Chris Cooney as well as his parents.

Pritchard takes home the Billy Manns Memorial Trophy The annual Billy Manns Memorial Shoot was contested at the Cobar Clay Target Club on Sunday with overcast and stormy conditions testing the shooters’ skills.

Hank Pritchard, with a near perfect score of 29 in the 30 Target Handicap Event, won the Billy Manns Memorial title over Kevin Hatch (28/30) after a shoot-off.

Max Ingleton and Bryan Manns, both with 28/30 were also in the running.

Sunday’s event attracted 16 shooters which included locals, juniors, novices and away visitors to contest the three event program.

Bryan Manns started the day off on the right foot with a win in AA Grade of the 20 Target Double Barrel event.

Manns shot a possible (perfect score 20/20) to take the win. The glory in A Grade was split four ways with Brad Kendrick, Max Ingleton, Hank Pritchard and Matt Harland all finishing with 18/20.

B Grade was also hotly contested and finished in a two-way tie between Mark Kolstad and Luke Scales, both with 20/20.

Darcy Manns won C Grade with 18/20.

Bryan Manns backed up to win the 25 Target Single Barrel event, once again with another possible, 25/25.

A Grade’s win was shared by Tracey Boon and Ingleton with 23/25, Kolstad again won the B Grade title with 25/25 and Kirk Grogan grabbed first place in C Grade with 18/25.

Another win last week in the final round of the Fast5 mixed netball regular competition ensured All Class finished on the top of the ladder this season.

All Class, with 17 points, finished the season as Minor Premiers beating Fast Fobs by just one point for the title with Fast Fobs finishing on 16 points.

KML was back in third place on 12 points; Watch & Learn and 2 Fast 2 Furious both finished with 11 points; and Why Did We Say Yes? (WDWSY?) had 10 points in 6th place.

These teams all progressed to the preliminary finals (the first of which was played last night).

The 7th team, Cynsteel, who finished at the bottom of the ladder, was eliminated from the competition.

and left it to the minor placing teams to work themselves out in the pecking order going forward.

Both were elimination games with KML taking on 2 Fast 2 Furious and Watch & Learn came up against WDWSY? In last week’s final round games, both All Class and Fast Fobs used their Power Play quarters to perfection.

All Class scored 18 points in their Power Play, which was more than half of their final game tally when they beat KML 35-22.

Fast Fobs also shot half their points (16) in their Power Play phase last Tuesday night in their close 32-29 win over WDWSY? In the other match played in Round 7, Watch & Learn finished with a 23-9 win over Cynsteel.

Roberts duo didn’t disappoint winning Pairs title with +24

The highlight of Golfie bowls this week was without a doubt the Club Championship Pairs final win by the magnificent Roberts father and son team, Don and Kyle, over Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Barry Bargwanna on Sunday.

Leading up to the final, the Roberts team was tipped as the favourite to win, and they definitely did not disappoint!

True to form, both father and son set a cracking pace from the get go building an unbeatable momentum to finish with a sizeable +24 victory and the well deserved title of 2022 Club Pairs Champions.

In the Championship Fours game on Sunday, another team with a mostly family connection featured with Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey, brother John Goonrey, nephew-in-law Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod and Scott Mayne fighting back to eventually finish with a +4 win.

They played David ‘Ooze’ Knight, Michael Sargent, Tadgh Waugh and David Schofield and it was a close match with the scores even three times throughout play.

Half way through it looked like Team Ooze were on a winning trajectory when they were ahead by seven points, however Skipper Skeet rallied his troops to finish with the win which takes them through to the semi finals.

Also on Sunday at the club, 18 social bowlers enjoyed three games of triples with Doug Hudson, Tony Polack and Rob Renkin (Bramble Bay) finishing as the outright winners of the day.

They beat their opposition of Karen Daly, Helen Boddy and Peta Zazoniuk by +25.

Both other triples games ended in +7 wins with the team of Alan Knight, Peter ‘China’

Brien and Allan Gardoll claiming victory along with Bian Smith, Alec Fraser and Janet Renkin (Bramble Bay).

A field of 12 bowlers were eager to participate in the inaugural Twilight Barefoot Bowls competition under lights on Friday, however Mother Nature had other ideas with ominous black clouds, thunder and lightning putting a stop to play.

An impromptu Saturday 50th birthday bowls event drew 22 enthusiasts to the greens to celebrate Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod’s milestone.

The overall winners were Alec Fraser and Karen Daly on +15 over Shine McIver and Paul Pursehouse.

Birthday boy’s team of Bogger, brother Jack McLeod and Jai Stevenson had a +11 win over Ooze, Haymish McLeod and Greg Clark.

Alan Knight and Tony Brown beat Jay Egan and Shane Carter by +5 while +3 was the winning margin recorded by John ‘Shark’ Daly and Shane Martin against Jason Howell and Peta Zazoniuk.

Narelle Kriz teamed up with Tony Polack to beat Peter ‘China’ Brien and Kelly Beard by +2.

In Thursday’s social bowls game, Shine McIver, bowls veteran Evelyn Hyde, Rob Renkin, Peta Zazoniuk and Karen Daly drew with Barbara Barklimore, Julie Livingston and Janet Renkin.

Over what was a very popular bowls week at the Golfie, the committee’s choice for the George The Giraffe Award was Tabitha Mitchell whose very narrow delivery, which traversed three rinks, surpassed all other wrong biases and short bowls delivered over the week.—The Second

The DC & C Barracudas team is loaded with touch super stars and they have been recording some big wins this season including an 11-0 win over Haymans Snowflakes last week in Round 5 of the Adults Mixed Touch competition.

Course closed

The Cobar Golf Course was closed last weekend to limit further damage to the already water soaked course.

Weather permitting, this Saturday the Bushies will take on the Townies in the annual Ernie Potter Memorial Trophy Day event.

The format for this year will be six holes of golf and 10 ends of bowls.

Roosters named an NRL State of Mind Club

The Cobar Rugby League Football Club has been recognised as a NRL State of Mind Club.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo praised the club in their efforts to support good mental health this year.

“Mental health is one of the most important issues facing our communities, and State of Mind seeks to use the power of rugby league to reduce the stigma surrounding Metal Health,” Mr Abdo said.

“The program also increases mental health literacy throughout grassroots rugby league clubs and encourages help-seeking behaviours throughout the community.

“Grassroots rugby league clubs often serve as a focal point for local communities, allowing people to come together, be active, socialise with their friends and be involved in their community.

“This means that rugby league clubs are perfectly placed to promote positive change in our communities,” he said.

“It is important that as a community we continue to look out for each other.

“The World Health Organisation estimates depression will be the number one global health concern in 2030.

“Even more worryingly, 54 percent of people with a mental illness do not access any treatment.

“We hope that the State of Mind program can start to reverse these trends,” Mr Abdo said.

Without the efforts of grassroots clubs, State of Mind would not be able to impact so many people across Australia promoting mental wellbeing among players, volunteers, supporters and the broader community.

Phat Athletes prove they’ve still got skills It was mostly all one way traffic in the Adults Mixed Touch game between Phat Athletes and Urban Strength last Thursday night at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

Phat Athletes ran away to finish with an easy 18-4 win in Round 5 of the competition.

The referee’s B&F points all went to Phat Athletes players including Summer Patterson, Kai Greenwood and Rachel Simon.

DC & C Barracudas added another win to their mounting tally last week.

Being low on player numbers didn’t help their Haymans Snowflakes opposition and the DC & C Barracudas didn’t show any mercy on their way to their 11-0 whitewash win.

Brianna Watson and Jed Noonan ran in two tries each for the Barracudas with Mollie Harley, Nathan McAndrew, Tom McKenna and Ryan Urquhart also adding a try each to their big tally.

Watson and Noonan shared in the game’s Best & Fairest points along with Haymans Snowflakes’ Jimmy Neyland.

The match between The Butchers and the Red Hot Chilli Steppers finished in a thrilling 6-all draw.

The Chilli Steppers had the upper hand at half time leading 5-2 before The Butchers turned the game around in the second half to score four points to the Chilli Steppers’ one.

Kai Taylor scored twice for The Butchers (and earned B&F points) with team mates Toby Greenwood, Sarah Morley and Reynold Mugugia also crossing for tries.
