Georgia to compete at State training awards Cobar’s Georgia Boland was named as the winner of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Western NSW Trainee of the Year at the NSW Training Awards Western Region dinner in Bathurst last Thursday.

Georgia will now go on to compete at State level against eight other regional winners in her category.

The 18 year old, who is now employed as a full time educator with Cobar Preschool and is currently studying her Diploma of Early Childhood Education, started her childcare training as a school-based trainee in 2021.

Georgia underwent two years of schoolbased training through ECTARC, an early childhood education services and training organisation, and was nominated by her trainer Cindy Duggan for the award.

The NSW Training Awards are conducted annually by Training Services NSW within the NSW Department of Education and recognise outstanding achievements in the vocational education and training sector.

The awards honour and reward the achievements and hard work of students, trainers/ teachers, Registered Training Organisations, as well as employers.

For individuals, winning an award can open many doors and potentially become a stepping stone in their careers.

Georgia said she was thrilled to be nominated and was very surprised when she was announced as a winner.

“I felt very proud of this achievement,” Georgia told The Cobar Weekly.

A generous donation

Police pursue a drunk driver

A police pursuit took place on Saturday night just after 11.30pm after a 21 year old male driver, who had been directed by police to pull over on the Barrier Highway, failed to stop.

“Police warning lights were activated and the vehicle was high beamed but failed to stop where a pursuit was initiated,” Acting sergeant Ryan Chillingworth said.

A short time later, police located the male and he was subjected to a breath test which returned a positive result.

The man was arrested and later underwent a breath analysis test which returned a reading of 0.050 grammes of alcohol.

The driver was charged with ‘Police pursuit - not stop - drive at speed - 1st offence’ and ‘Drive with low range PCA - 1st offence’.

A smart signal booster, the CEL-FI units will increase network coverage for the emergency vehicles without compromising or interfering with other mobile networks or signals. The units also automatically adjust to changing network conditions (or black spots) and boost WIFI reception. With poor network coverage experienced in various parts around the Cobar Shire, which can impact on how quickly the RFS can respond to those in need, the new CEL-FI units will go a long way towards helping them keep the Cobar community safe. The long sale process of the CSA Mine to Metals Acquisition Corp (MAC) for $US1.1 billion is close to being finalised.

Glencore International has owned the mine since 1999 and entered into an agreement with MAC to sell the mine in March 2022.

Georgia wins a training award Continued from Page 1.

“I am looking forward to this to help students pursue the start of their career pathways.”

Georgia said she’d received lots of help throughout her training including assistance from her school careers adviser, Megan Nicholson, School Learning Support staff member Elsa Mitchell, her trainer Cindy from ECTARC, and the staff at Cobar Preschool.

“I am so grateful to each and everyone of them for their support and the ongoing support they are still providing me with.

“My mentors have encouraged me when I thought I couldn’t complete my studies.

“They have given me confidence and encouraged me to pursue a career in the field that I love.

“They are always complementing me on how I perform in the work environment,” Georgia said.

Employer, Cobar Preschool director Kristi Martin, said they were pleased and proud of Georgia.

“Georgia has put in so much hard work and dedication to her study,” Kristi said.

“The relationships she has with the families and the children are amazing, she has fitted in as part of our team from day one.

“It is wonderful to see her being acknowledged as she gives her all every day.”

Cobar High School careers advisor Megan Nicholson said the Cobar community had embraced the school’s School-Based Apprentices and Trainee (SBAT) program by offering jobs and training to students as they complete their senior years.

“These opportunities have created some great success stories for those involved.

“It is a credit to Georgia for being recognised at such a high level for her commitment to Early Childhood education.

“Her passion for this chosen career path is evident as a valued employee at Cobar Preschool,” Megan said.

Georgia encourages any students who are given the opportunity to undertake a school based traineeship or apprenticeship to give it serious consideration.

She said to have left school and already have a certificate behind her in a field she loves working in has been a great advantage.

“It’s the best thing I have done!” she said.

Georgia will head to Sydney next month for an interview as part of the State judging.

Decision made in best interests of the community

Social media blew up over the weekend with many locals (and former locals) offering opinions and comments about the recent temporary closure of the Cobar Vinnies store.

The Cobar Weekly approached Tanya Godden, Regional Manager, Retail West, St Vincent de Paul Society (NSW), who oversees the Cobar store, for a comment on the matter.

“The St Vincent de Paul Society NSW worked faithfully with members and volunteers to bring a fair and timely resolution to the operational issues at the Vinnies Cobar shop,” Ms Godden said.

“Unfortunately, following non-observance of the Society Code of Conduct, the Society has made the decision that a number of volunteers will no longer be able to volunteer at the Cobar shop.

“At all times the best interests of the people we serve, our members, the community and wider organisation were considered.

“Unfortunately the operating hours of the Vinnies Cobar shop will be disrupted in the short term.

“However, we’re always actively seeking passionate people to join our retail community across the state and encourage anyone aged 16 years and over to apply to become a volunteer,” Ms Godden said.

Funding for a Copper workshop A copper jewellery making workshop, hosted by Cobar Shire Council, is one of a number of exciting creative and cultural projects that will be popping up across the Outback Arts region this year.

Cobar Shire Council was one of the seven successful recipients to share in the $17,000 worth of funding from the 2023 Country Arts Support Program (CASP) which supports community arts and cultural development in the Outback Arts region.

This funding program (through Outback Arts supported by Create NSW) is well established and provides regional people access to a diverse range of cultural programs each year and brings local opportunities that may otherwise have not been available.

Outback Arts Executive Director JamieLea Trindall said, CASP is a significant investment by Outback Arts with support of Create NSW to provide funds directly to regional areas.

“It is a great initiative that allows regional communities and local people with an opportunity to create and realise their own arts and culture projects,” Ms Trindall said.

“Outback Arts are looking forward to seeing these projects develop over the coming year.”

Cobar Shire Council will receive $1,000 to fund a Copper City Copper Workshop which will be led by artist Skye Bragg.

Skye completed a silversmithing course at Sturt Gallery in Sydney and lives on a large sheep and cattle property near Bourke where she makes her unique handcrafted jewellery.

At Cobar’s workshop to be held during this year’s Festival of the Miner’s Ghost Skye will teach the basic principles of silversmithing.

Essential Energy open community choices program

Essential Energy’s fifth Community Choices Program has opened for nominations, with local community groups encouraged to nominate for their chance to win part of a $250k funding pool.

Essential Energy Community Relations Manager, Bronya Pressler, said Essential Energy is proud to support grassroot organisations across 95 per cent of NSW, and parts of southern QLD through the Community Choices program.

“The Community Choices program is open to registered charities, not-for-profit and community groups such as CWAs, community halls, community centres, school P&Cs and sporting clubs with full criteria available on the Essential Energy website.

“This year we have increased funding to a total of $250,000 to be shared between eligible groups across 20 zones in our network footprint.

Having another clear out

Above average weather for a few more days

Cobar has experienced a week of above average daytime temperatures with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting our warm winter weather will linger for a few more days.

Last Wednesday was our warmest day of the week when the thermometer reached 23.7 degrees, which is 7.2 degrees higher than the average daytime temperature of 16.5 degrees for this time of year.

(According to the Bureau, the highest temperature on record for June was recorded in 1995 on June 10 when the mercury reached a top of 26.3 degrees.)

It reached 18.9 on Thursday and Friday was similar with 18.8 degrees.

Saturday was sunny with a top of 18 and Sunday’s maximum was 18.6 degrees.

Monday was a warm day with the mercury reaching 20.3 degrees and, while Tuesday felt cold, the Bureau reports it did reach a top of 20.4 degrees.

Our overnight temperatures have been slowly dropping and we’ve had some cold starts to the day including just 3.1 degrees the recorded minimum yesterday morning.

New 4WD ambulances rolled out Assistance for tertiary students and apprentices Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has encouraged young people in the electorate who are starting to think about their post-secondary school plans, to also explore the financial assistance options available to them.

“The costs associated with attending tertiary education in another town or city is often the biggest barrier for students from regional, rural and remote Australia,” Mr Coulton said.

“The former Coalition Government recognised this and implemented a number of improvements to eligibility criteria to ensure more students from regional Australia could access tertiary education without having to face the financial barrier.

“A range of assistance is available to students including Youth Allowance for students and Australian Apprentices, Austudy, ABSTUDY, the Student Start-up Loan, the Tertiary Assistance Payment and the Relocation Scholarship.

“Eligibility criteria for each of these payments varies, so it is important to contact Services Australia before starting a claim,” Mr Coulton said.

Seniors’ soccer game ends in a thrilling 4-all draw The Seniors match in the Cobar Junior Soccer competition on Saturday finished in a thrilling 4-all draw while all the other games played last week were one-sided matches.

In the Seniors game, Wanderers’ goals were netted by Isaac Theakston and Braiden Jones with visitors Chad Buckman and Ethan Joppich also netting a goal each.

Aaron Wyllie also made some excellent saves as goalkeeper for his Wanderers team.

Goals for the Rangers were scored by Jade Buckman (2), Jeremy Theakston and Jacob Theakston.

The weekly Gumnut Milkshake Awards went to Aaron Wyllie and Stephen Ntamuhanga while Braiden Jones and Sienna Jones received the Cobar Hotbake Donut awards.

In the Mini’s competition, Rangers finished with a 5-nil win over Wanderers with all five of the Rangers goals coming from the boot of Ethan Jebb.

The other Mini’s game finished with a 6-nil win for United over Rovers.

United’s goals were scored by Max Preisig (5) and Ivy Joss (1).

The Mini’s Milkshake awards were won by Levi Mackay, Ethan Jebb, Ivy Joss and Layla Fugar.

For the Mids, Tom Geppert, Cooper Pemberton, Zara Patterson and Mark McBride took home the Milkshake Awards.

Bowlers welcome visitors to the Golfie greens

Sunday’s Social Bowls at the Golfie had 11 participants, including two visitors, playing two games of triples.

The winners of the day, with +10, were Graham, a visitor from Murray Bridge, Darryl Jermyn and double lead Kelly Beard.

The scorecard showed that Team Graham led from the get go and, despite a late charge from their opposition, Michael Sargent, Glenn ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe and Beard, they could not reach double figures until the second last end.

The day’s runners-up were the team of Doug Hudson, Anthony Polack and visitor Heather (from Murray Bridge) on +5 over Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond, David Thomas and Karen Daly.

A field of 10 avid bowlers played another round of social bowls on Monday.

Memorial Day attracts a field of 16 players

The Vi McLaughlin Memorial Day Canadian Ladies’ Golf event on Saturday had the best field of the week with 16 ladies taking part.

Marlene Wynd and Daphne Cross were the winners of the perpetual trophy with 78 1/2 net followed by Karen Manns and Julie Livingston on 80 net.

In third place were Barb Barklimore and Brenda Fugar (80 7/8) with Serena Fraser and Robynne Morton next with 84 1/2.

Sally Bannister and Geraldine Francisco rounded out the top place getters with 86 1/8 net.

Nearest the Pin winners on the 8th hole were Robynne Morton, Serena Fraser and Rhonda Campbell.

Closest to the flag on the 11th hole were Sally Bannister, Fran Samios and Bev McLaughlin.

Numbers were down in the other Ladies Golf competition games played last week with only the bare minimum on hand for the games to go ahead.

Egan claims third successive Championship It was a big weekend of golf with the BRilliam’s Copper City Classic and Club Championships played over the Saturday and Sunday in the Men’s Golf competition.

Jay Egan is a specialist over the long format of the game and he came out the Club Championships winner after a masterful display over the 54 holes.

After leading by four shots overnight on Saturday, Egan finished with a one-over par scratch score of 214, and was a huge 15 shots clear of the second place, Mark ‘George’ Fraser on 229.

Third place went to Alec Fraser on 232.

That’s the third A Grade Championship in the past three years that Egan has won.

Previous to him, Jacob Ryan won six championships in a row.

Nearest the Pins prizes were won on the first day by Egan on the 3rd and 15th holes; Stewart Fraser won the 7th and 8th; and George Fraser claimed the prize on the difficult 11th hole.

Jason Foster was the only Nearest the Pin winner on Sunday taking out the 8th hole prize.
