Senior Constable Tanner worked her last shift in Cobar After four years of service to the NSW Police Central North Police District, Senior Constable Monique Tanner is transferring to the Hunter Valley.

Senior Constable Tanner transferred to Cobar in July 2020 as a Constable after having previously spent 16 months working in Bourke.

Prior to that she was stationed in Redfern for three years.

Central North Police District Relieving Commander Acting Superintendent David Piddington said during her time in the District, Senior Constable Tanner had embedded herself in the community, responded to countless calls for assistance and provided support to many people.

Senior Constable Tanner was also praised for her exemplary service by a number of local residents who have said she will be missed.

She worked her last shift in Cobar on Saturday and will move to the Hunter Valley and commence the next stage in her career.

A hard blow for community group Cobar has recently farewelled Senior Constable Monique Tanner who has served in Cobar since July 2020 and for four years in the Central North Police District. Cobar Police received a report the canteen building had been broken into sometime between Thursday and Saturday with a number of items stolen.

WOW a fantastic event for women

Cobar Shire Council last week held a WOW Week of Women’s events as part of International Women’s Day which aims to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The week of women’s local events included the launch of a WOW podcast by local artist and businesswoman Seigrid Peters, meditation workshops, fitness and yoga classes, a morning tea, a session talking to school age girls (the Next Generation of women) and a snood making workshop.

The week also culminated with a networking dinner on Friday night at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre which brought together more than 90 women (and one male) to celebrate what makes women special and unique, what inspires them, empowers them and helps them to connect to others in the community.

by Sig Peters who welcomed three guest speakers, former residents Tanya Gilbert and Angela Elliott (nee Taylor) and also Sam Longmore from Yass.

Sig described the three as being “exceptional women who come from all different backgrounds and industries, women who have faced challenges in their lives, have built resilience and confidence within themselves and who are empowering others and are making positive impacts within their own communities”.

She posed a number of tough questions to the trio, including: What’s an embarrassing moment you can share with us? How do you maintain a work life balance? Who have been your biggest supporters in life? What have been your greatest challenges in life? Is there anything you’ve achieved that previously you thought had been impossible? How do you develop confidence and the courage to step outside your comfort zone?

Each of the three speakers were engaging as they very honestly and generously shared their experiences.

Tanya spoke about working and making her way in a male dominated environment, about being a mother and the importance she places on planning, and also accepting flexibility to be able to achieve what you want.

She also shared her confidence tip of “faking it until you make it”.

Angela said she was thankful for the “village she had around her growing up in Cobar” who helped her through her formative teenage years and how she juggles work and family (she runs two businesses and has three children).

“There is no work life balance, it’s just hard yakka, stress and fun,” she said.

Sam shared her experiences about the major adjustments she had to make in her life following two car accidents which left her with a disability.

She spoke about hitting rock bottom, being close to broke and giving up on the dream of becoming a mother and missing out on all the experiences that went with it.

Sam also spoke of the success she’s had in her business (which has also led to her studying to become a psychologist to help others) and her selection into the Australian Waterski Team to compete at the world championships in California later this year.

“If you don’t get the opportunity then create your own,” was Sam’s advice to guests.

The Pig Day Out!

The Cobar Rugby League senior and junior football clubs held a very successful season launch on Saturday hosting The Pig Day Out at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

The novelty pig racing, jumping castles, fairy floss, face painting and novelty games proved to be a big hit with families and raised approximately $6,000 on the day.

Drawn in the No 5 position is Thomas McBride, the Public Education Party candidate from the outer Sydney suburb of Woodbine.

Mr McBride completed his teaching career in 2016, and was the longest serving public education system school principal in NSW. With service in areas such as Garah, Moree, Lake Cargelligo, Forster, and Merriwa, Mr McBride is a devotee for the provision of a world class education for every child in regional and metropolitan areas.

He is concerned about the steady decline of academic results and the flight of public school enrolments to the private system.

As an advocate for the disadvantaged and ignored, Mr McBride is determined that our children and young people deserve a fair go.

He knows the difficulties experienced by parents of children with a disability/ies and the frustration they experience when the child comes of age to attend Kindergarten.

“The absence of special schools, support classes and qualified special education teachers in the bush is appalling.

“Similarly, many high school students are not being taught by a subject specific, qualified Mathematics or Science teacher,” he said.

Mr McBride contrasts this with the wealthy, independent schools and said the inequity is “ridiculous” and is calling for a better future for our children and citizens.

Independent Stuart Howe from Condobolin has drawn No 6 on the ballot paper.

Mr Howe ran as an Independent candidate for the Federal Government election last year for the Seat of Parkes against Mark Coulton (who retained the seat).

She also plans to travel around a bit visiting old friends and relatives she hasn’t seen for a while and overseas travel is also on the ‘to do’ list.

“I’ll still be around, I plan on staying in Cobar,” she said.

Dealing with confrontation

Rally overnights

Cobar will be extra busy next Monday night when we receive a visit from 500 visitors who are passing through on the Shitbox Rally 2023 Summer.

The rally overnights in Cobar and local caterer Haylee Prince, with some help from the Rotary Club of Cobar, have been charged with the task of feeding the group dinner and breakfast and providing all with a packed lunch.

Haylee put the call out to local sporting and community groups a couple of months ago looking for help, but as it was a Monday night/ Tuesday morning, the only group able to offer any help was Rotary.

“We’ll manage,” Haylee said.

The Shitbox Rally is a tri-annual event, officially endorsed and supported by the Cancer Council, and raises funds for cancer research.

The Shitbox Rally 2023 Summer leaves Rockhampton this Friday morning and participants travel via the Artesian Basin to Hobart (on board the Spirit of Tasmania) where they finish next Saturday.

Sam’s need to find a creative outlet became her business

Sam said after her accident, she needed to find a creative outlet to help her cope mentally and she turned to knitting, which has become her passion.

The group of 22 ladies at Saturday’s workshop in Cobar were shown Sam’s unique style of knitting which uses oversized needles and oversized wool, which she developed because of her disability.

“I didn’t knit beforehand,” Sam said.

“After the accident I was pulled out of the Ag industry that I loved and was always a part of. I’ve always been creative, so I needed to help myself as I was in a bad mental state.

“I started knitting. I loved the wool and I knew how to work with it.

“I jammed all of those passions together, made a scarf for myself and made a scarf for my friend and it snowballed from there.

“I’m not a plan maker, never have been.

“I’m a ‘fly by the seat of my pants’ kind of gal and it just evolved.

“The business just happened,” she said.

Cobar Fire Station needs an urgent upgrade

The Cobar Fire Station is in urgent need of an upgrade and Acting Fire Captain Alex Lennon made their problems known to State Member for Barwon Roy Butler when he was in town recently.

“Fire and Rescue NSW does an amazing job looking after people and property across NSW,” Mr Butler said.

“Like so many front line workers, they are under-resourced and being pushed to the brink!

“The Fire and Rescue NSW Station 256 Cobar is not at risk of closing, but it’s a prime example of the chronic under-resourcing.”

Mr Butler was advised the roller door for the engine bay has been broken for over three months which means two trucks are housed out the back in the open or inside the shed, which can reach up to 50 degrees inside.

“The crew has trouble being able to charge them due to heat,” Mr Butler said.

“The engine bay is where their gear is stored, so when operational, their equipment is all mixed in together and is a real WHS risk.

“Our firefighters take risks every day for their job, but it doesn’t mean they should have to inside the station,” Mr Butler said.

“A team like in Cobar covers more than just their local area.

“Surely they should have a station that has been modernised and maintained to meet basic standards—a locker room that means their female crew members don’t have to get undressed in front of the others would be a start.”

He said if he’s re-elected, he will be working hard to make sure critical services, like Cobar Fire and Rescue Station 256, staff get what they need to do their job.

Overnight temperatures in Cobar over the past week have been cooler but the days have remained very warm.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology Friday was our coolest morning with residents waking up to a fresh 11.9 degrees before the thermometer climbed to a top of 32 during the day.

Wednesday’s minimum was 13.9 degrees before reaching a maximum of 29.3.

Thursday’s low was 14.3 degrees before a mild day which reached a top of 26.6.

Saturday was our warmest day of the week when the mercury rose to 35.3 degrees and Sunday was also very warm at 34.2.

Monday started off fresh with a minimum of 14.6 before warming up 30.5 degrees.

The Bureau is predicting the weather to heat up again.

We’re heading for a very hot and dry weekend with the mercury expected to reach 40 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday which, according to weatherzone, is slightly lower than the highest temperature on record for this time of year of 41.5 degrees recorded in 2007.

Today’s maximum is expected to be 35 before it creeps up to 38 degrees tomorrow.

The days are getting shorter and the sun is starting to rise later each day and set a bit earlier. On March 1 the sun rose at 7.05am and set at 7.51pm and yesterday it rose at 7.15am and set at 7.36pm.

“When most candidates and/or politicians make their campaigns all about “selfies” with the organised few in many places around the Barwon electorate, I want my campaign to be about others, to be about the actual community that I intend to serve,” Mr Howe said.

“In doing so, highlight to anyone that cares to notice, the extreme difficulties Aussie families are currently experiencing due to the cost of living crisis that our current politicians and governments had everything to do with for decades.

“This will only change if you my electors are as tired as I am of hearing utter rubbish and excuses as to why we cannot fix this human crisis that is unfolding.

“How about less “selfies”...less “look at me” from candidates and politicians and do your job,” Mr Howe challenged.

The Greens have put forward Armidale resident, Pat Schultz, as their candidate for this election.

“I’m standing for the seat of Barwon at a critical moment in time for voters in this electorate, for social equity, for First Nations people and farmers, for the environment and for free and accessible health services for those in need,” Ms Schultz said.

“This is at a time when Santos, a multinational fossil fuel corporation, pushes ahead with its coal seam gas project in North West NSW, a project that will cover 95,000 hectares, impacting the Pilliga, polluting waterways and ignoring Gomeroi cultural heritage.

“This Government needs a wake-up call,” she said.

Nimbin resident Ben Hartley, has been put forward as the Legalise Cannabis Party candidate, and has drawn the bottom position on the ballot paper.

Queensland born and a long time supporter of the legalisation of cannabis, Mr Harltey is reportedly an adamant supporter of Legalise Cannabis NSW. According to his profile on the party’s website, Mr Hartley “actively assists his community and supports those causes closest to him in any way he can.

“He strongly believes in equality and bringing Australia back to an acceptable sustainable status quo.”

An initiative of the Rotary Club of Warners Bay and supported by the Rotary Club of Cobar (and numerous other Rotary clubs), the Men’s Health Education Rural Van (MHERV) was in Cobar this week providing basic health checks (to men and women) which could potentially save lives. AUTOMINE SPECIALIST CSA Mine, Cobar, NSW Job Ref: CSA0900 CSA Mine is looking for an experienced AutoMine Specialist to provide technical support and service our Sandvik AutoMine system, including loader fleet and equipment/hardware support. This role will see you developing your technical competencies and assist in training other team members on the installation, servicing, and maintenance of the system. The role is technical/equipment focused and have you providing guidance, implementation/technical support/repairs and advice on the implementation and strategies for the AutoMine equipment.

About the role: • Develop and organise Automation support for AutoMine technical, repairs and training for workshop personnel • Provide technical support and training to the service network and workshops on operation, maintenance and troubleshooting practices • Provide feedback to Sandvik site PSA’s and Sandvik Automation in compiling accurate data to process warranty claims and engineering machine improvements • Review spare parts recommendations and develop accuracy of Machine Life Operating Costs (MLOC) • Create store stock max/mins and submit to stores for addition to site stock • Work to develop system project plans, project schedules and commissioning activities • Perform equipment installations and commissioning • Assist with the development and implementation of preventative maintenance schedules for AutoMine fitted equipment and infrastructure

The successful applicant will have: • A relevant Auto Electrical trade qualification • Previous experience with RCT or Sandvik AutoMine • Current Australian Manual Driver's Licence • Underground mechanical maintenance experience in mobile fleet, including but not limited to: Sandvik, Epiroc and Caterpillar equipment • Competency to remove, dismantle, diagnose faults, reassemble, test, and return equipment to service • Understanding of equipment and stores systems will be highly regarded • A high commitment to a positive safety culture Conditions This is a 7/7 roster, commute options include residential, DIDO or FIFO (Brisbane, Queensland or Sydney, New South Wales) with meals and accommodation supplied. Spoils shared around between nine swimmers

A win for new Camels’ debut

The spoils were shared around at the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club competition at the pool last Tuesday night with nine different Yabbies lining up on the podium.

John Carswell was on the top step of the podium after winning the opening event, the 30 metres freestyle handicapped swim.

Carswell finished within 0.09 seconds of his nominated time to grab “gold” ahead of Stephen Clark in second place (0.28) and Murray Harland was third (0.43).

Harland pushed Carswell off the top step in the 50m swim grabbing first place with 0.40 seconds off his time.

Carswell had to settle for “silver” when he finished 0.43 seconds outside his time and Shane Josephson was narrowly back in third place on 0.44.

Paul Swainston finished out in front in the 100m event taking first place with 0.28 seconds off his nominated time ahead of Chris Powell on 0.40.

New swimmer and new Anglican minister, Reverend James Daymond, was third with 0.65 seconds off his time.

Mike Mitchell (at centre being tackled) made his rugby debut playing Flanker with Clark and Carswell teamed up to win the Brace Relay novelty event, which involved the Camels on Saturday helping them to a 31-14 win over the Parkes Boars. It was swimming across the pool with a kick board not only his first game with the Camels, but also his first game of footy! between their legs.

The pair completed the task within 0.35 seconds of their nominated time.

First Supershots of the Fast5 comp scored this season

Another double header round was played in the Fast5 Netball competition last Tuesday night at Ward Oval with the first Supershots of the season recorded.

Once again the competition’s newcomers, Mixed & Matched (M&M), dominated the night to win both of their matches, with their shooters setting two records, one for the season and the other was a first in the local competition.

In their Round 4 win over Watch & Learn, M&M’s Lauren Urquhart shot the first long range, three-point Supershot for the season and then in the 4th quarter, in their Power Play quarter, team mate Peta Woods landed a Supershot also, which was worth six points (the first of the competition in four seasons) which helped the team to a 34-30 win.

In their first game of the night, M&M only just scraped in to finish with a one point win over Fast Fobs, 36-35.

At three-quarter time, Fast Fobs were seven points ahead, 25-18 after recording a big 16 points in the third quarter when they used their Power Play phase. Football talent shines in junior touch comp

The Junior Touch competition has been seeing some impressive results with a drawn game played last week in the Senior age division while a total of 27 points was scored in one game in the Junior division.

The Raiders tied 6-all with top for the table Mad Dogs in their Round 6 Seniors (13-16 years) game last Thursday at Ward Oval.

Damon Bruce scored twice of the Raiders with female team mates Rhylee Jeffery and Piper Neale touching down for a try each.

(Female tries are worth two points.)

Mad Dogs’ try scorers were Oisin McMullen (2), Alora Deppeler and Ella Oborn.

The referee’s Best & Fairest points were earned by Ryder Anderson (Mad Dogs), Rhylee Jeffery and Clay McDonald (Mad Dogs).

In the other Seniors game, Gladiators fought back from a 3-2 half time deficit to eventually get the better of Yellow Bellies with a 10-7 win.

Jaxon Burke led the try scoring for Gladiators with four tries, Rhylee Patterson crossed for two (to add four points to their tally) and Jamal Eves and Kai McCosker added one try each to their tally.

For Yellow Bellies, Toby Greenwood and Ethan McLeod scored doubles and Parker Cryer and Bridgette Negfeldt added the extras.

Bridgette, Maddie Bruce (Gladiators) and Joe Webster (Gladiators) shared in the game’s B&F points.

In the Juniors 9-12 years, competition last week a massive total of 27 points was scored in the Oranges versus Redbacks game with Oranges eventually finishing as one point winners, 14-13.

Thomas Knight headed up the scoring for Oranges finishing the game with a tally of five tries, Talas Burke scored three, Mason King and Hugo Josephson each scored doubles and Skyla Fairfull also touched down for a try.

In reply, Tommy George scored four tries for Redbacks, Taylah Wyllie and Dusty McDonald each crossed twice and Harlym Curtis and Zye Russell added their extras.

Oranges’ Keelan Atuau shared in the referee’s B&F points along with Taylah and Hugo.

Powerade have continued their winning run in the competition with another victory last week when they beat SpongeBobs 12-8.

Heading up the try scoring was George McDonald (3), Rhylee Jeffery (2) with Judd Josephson, Zara Patterson and Jessica Rogers scoring a try each.

Charlie Nicholson, Riley Bruce and Ella Oborn scored two tries each for SpongeBobs.

Best & Fairest points were shared by Rhylee, Charlie and Jessica.

New darts boss The Cobar Darts Association held their reconvened annual general meeting last Tuesday with Tony Brown elected as the club’s new president.

Daniel Duell has returned as vice president.

Craig Jones retained his treasurer’s role for another season and Andrew Buckman was elected to the vice treasurer role.

The secretary’s duties will be undertaken by Jacki Duell with Kylie Tiffen to assist as vice secretary.

Tuilau has plenty of pace

One of the Camels’ new Fijian recruits this season, Marika Tuilau, showed plenty of pace out on the right wing in Saturday’s game against the Parkes Boars. Tuilau out-sprinted the Parkes defenders from half way and palmed off their last line of defence in their fullback to score under the posts and help Cobar to their comprehensive 31-14 win. Tuilau comes from a talented rugby family with his older brother, Marika Koroibete, an Australian Wallaby.

Mayne claims first Singles win of the season

The Golfie’s first Bowls Singles Championship game for the 2023 season was played on Sunday between Scott Mayne and Karen Daly with Doug Hudson acting as marker.

For the first few ends ownership of the mat changed hands at every end.

Mayne soon got into a good rhythm and dominated play for the rest of the game.

His ability to consistently draw shots, thereby surrounding the jack with three or four bowls each end, proved to be too difficult for Daly to recover her equilibrium.

Mayne’s +15 win takes him through to the next round.

Cobar’s Pennants bowlers travelled to Nyngan on Sunday for the third round of the competition.

Shining stars for Cobar were the team of Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod, David Schofield, Don Roberts and Kyle Roberts who won their game by +7.

The card showed that the turning point in favour of Cobar was their seven point win on the 14th end.

Up until then, Nyngan’s score was double that of Cobar! A great come back indeed.

In the second game, Cobar’s team of Barry Bargwanna, John Daly, Craig Grimmond and Greg Read started well, leading by +5, then keeping within three shots as Nyngan picked up steam.

Unfortunately for Cobar, Nyngan managed to increase their advantage to win by +5.

In the last game, the Cobar side of Bian Smith, Shane Carter, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Gerard Livingston also started off well leading by +5 until Nyngan rallied and went on to finish with a +2 win.

Thus, the Pennants event ended in a draw.

As far as the overall Pennant points tally went, Nyngan has a total of 5½ to Cobar 4½, and combined with previous wins for Cobar, means this coming Sunday’s Pennants games in Cobar against Bourke will be crucial for both Cobar and Bourke.

No social bowls took place at the Golfie on Sunday due to the large contingent of bowlers travelling to Nyngan for Pennants.

In the Twilight Bowls competition on Friday night, the triples team of Tony Brown, Karen Daly and Steve Manns finished as the winners.

Their game against David Schofield, Greg Clark and Ray Fellows was very tight until Brown and Co scored four and five shot wins on consecutive ends which rattled their rivals some what.

Team Brown finished with a +9 win.

It was a good night for Brown who also won the Spider event.

Early on in their pairs game, Narelle Kriz and Allan Gardoll were looking good for the win, however, their opposition, John Daly and Mick Harvey, managed to catch them up on the second last end and go on and steal the win by +2 on the final end.

Cobar’s team this season has had an injection of some Fijian firepower with five players from the Lomavata Rugby Club in the Lomaiviti Province in Fiji, joining the Camels for Saturday’s game.

Willie Daucakacaka, has been training with the Camels after having arrived in Cobar before Christmas, while his four other Lomavata club mates, only arrived in town last week.

Newly arrived Marika Tuilau (younger brother of Australian Wallaby Marika Koroibete) showed he had plenty of pace on the right wing when he streaked away to post a try for the Camels on Saturday.

Also on debut with the Camels, Mike Mitchell, showed some potential playing at Flanker.

(It was also the first game of footy he’s played!)

The Camels try scorers in Saturday’s match included Dave Johnson, Brandon Jones, Tuilau, Filipe Sotai and Daucakacaka.

The Bactrian ladies’ side, who were struggling for players earlier in the week, got the numbers they needed and they matched their Parkes opposition on the field with the game The Camels have welcomed some Fijian firepower into their team this season with finishing in a 5-all draw.
