Variety bashers bring the smiles as they do the miles

Wayne Phillips, (Melbourne visitor Andrew Allcock), Council’s director of corporate and community services Kylie Smith and general manager Peter Vlatko, Greg Martin, Laura Andrew, Mick Haines and Robert Walker at the councillor information session on Monday night at the Council Chambers. As of yesterday nine candidates had lodged nominations with the NSW Electoral Commission for next month’s Local Government elections, six of which were current councillors. The other three are new candidates and include Miranda Fry, Peter Florance and Mick Haines. Potential candidates have until noon today to nominate.

The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club carpark was filled with weird and whacky cars (and crazily costumed people) on Monday morning as the South Australia Variety Bash passed through town.

The 36th annual SA Variety Bash hit the road on Saturday from Renmark in SA and overnighted in Cobar on Sunday as part of their 3,000km journey to the Gold Coast.

The 232 entrants travelled in a convoy of 72, let us just say, ‘interesting’ vehicles!

The 2024 Variety SA Bash is raising funds to help support SA kids who are sick, disadvantaged or living with disability.

This year’s event aims to raise an incredible $1.5 million for children in need.

Variety SA CEO, Mark McGill said the Bash is their flagship fundraiser, that helps them meet the ever-expanding demand of grants for SA kids in need, their families, other children’s charities, schools, hospitals and community groups.

“The past year alone, Variety SA has positively impacted the lives of over 88,000 children in South Australia through 244 grants totalling $6.23 million,” Mark said.

Over the past 35 years, the Bash entrants have raised in excess of $51 million.

The SA Variety Bash is the third car rally to have passed through Cobar in the past week with the Drover’s Run Adventure Rally overnighting in town last week and the Rotary Club of Dubbo South’s Destination Outback rally also passing through on Friday.

Cobar Rotary hands out $8,500 to local organisations The Rotary Club of Cobar celebrated entry into the new Rotary year with their annual Changeover Dinner on Monday evening at the Bowling & Golf Club.

The incoming club president David Snelson announced the new Rotary Club Management Board to club members and invited guests during the dinner.

Club secretary Gordon Hill said it had been another busy year for their small group of club members.

Mr Hill outlined their involvement with several major events including the Tour de OROC (which this year raised a record amount of $235,400 for the Dubbo Macquarie Home Stay, which is very well used by Cobar residents) and also the Science and Engineering Challenge (an event which the Cobar High School won again this year).

“The club has struggled to maintain adequate membership to keep the club functioning but we have successfully welcomed three new members of the Cobar community to the club in recent weeks,” Mr Hill said.

United Way Australia has a Cradle to Career education strategy called ReadLearnSucceed (RLS).

One of its aims is to tackle the statistic that one in five children start school without the basics to succeed.

The program endeavors to support children, parents and the community to ensure more children start school with the literacy skills required to learn.

In partnership with Penguin Random House Australia, the program delivers a quality, ageappropriate book once a month direct to children at home from birth to five years old.

The program equips parents with the tools to support early childhood literacy.

Glenhope celebrates 150 years

Police investigate theft of vehicles

Police are investigating the theft of two vehicles stolen from a local motel carpark in the early hours of Monday morning.

It’s believed the vehicles were stolen between 3.30am and 4.30am from the Crossroads Motel in Louth Road.

The vehicles are a white Toyota Hilux single cab and a white Toyota Land Cruiser single cab.

Both vehicles have an A3 sized sticker of the world on them.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have any information about the theft or may have seen the vehicles to contact Cobar Police or Crime Stoppers.

Warm week and some rain ahead As part of this year’s Glenhope Shindig on the weekend, descendants of the Weltie family (pictured above) joined Glenhope’s current owners, the Johnson family, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the settling of the property by Peter and Anne Weltie in 1874. This year’s Shindig, which is a popular stop off for caravaners on their way to the Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill, once again attracted a good crowd who were entertained by musicians Royden Donohue, Michelle Little, Baeden Faint and Chloe Swannell, along with poet Murray Hartin and author Jamelle Wells.

Cobar has experienced a week of mostly above average temperatures and the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting more warm days for the week ahead.

The mercury reached a very pleasant 21.6 degrees on both Sunday and Monday, which were our warmest days of the week.

That’s almost four degrees above the average of 17.8 degrees for this time of year.

We recorded a top of 18.8 degrees last Thursday, Friday’s maximum was 21.2 before the temperature dropped after we recorded 2.6mm of rain overnight.

After a cool start to the morning on Saturday, it warmed up to a top of 19.3 degrees.

The Bureau predicts it will reach a top of 20 degrees today and there’s a medium chance of up to 5mm of rain.

We can expect a partly cloudy day with a top of 21 degrees tomorrow.

A warm day is predicted for Friday with an expected top of 23 degrees.

The Bureau reports there’s also a high chance we may get up to 6mm of rainfall.

Saturday is expected to be cloudy with a top of 18 degrees, and a slight chance of rain.

Sunday should be mostly sunny with a top temperature of 20 degrees.

Monday is predicted to be a partly cloudy day with a maximum of 21 degrees and, there’s a slight chance we may also receive a shower of rain.

Newey to host the Federal Court

The Newey recreation area will be transformed into a Federal Court room today for a formal hearing.

The parties to the claim will make submissions to Her Honour Justice Perry, that Ngemba, Ngiyampaa, Wangaaypuwan and Wayilwan People’s native title should be recognised by consent.

The Judge is then expected to hand down her judgment which will bring to an end a native title claim that was filed 12 years ago.

Closure of 3G

Telstra will close its 3G communication network at the end of this month and the 3G Optus network will shutdown next month.

The National Farmers Federation urges farmers and those living in the bush to check any and all of their technology that could be affected by the 3G closure such as wireless home phones, medical alert devices, smart watches, antennas or boosters, weather stations, remote sensors or security devices.

The markets, organised by Cobar Shire Council to take advantage of the big crowd of travellers passing through to the Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill, were very popular with visitors and locals.

Shoppers were able to browse a variety of stalls including toys, gifts, jewellery, plants, salt products, artwork and candles. In addition there was a range of food and entertainment on offer, including blow-up castles for the kids.

Challenge winners

Cobar’s Neve Carter and Kayla Hasson were selected to play in the NSW Rugby League Open’s game at the Outback Challenge at Lightning Ridge on Saturday. The NSW team were to have played Group 19 but unfortunately they couldn’t attend and so the NSW team recruited more players and split the squad up into two teams who played each other. It was Hasson’s first tackle game back after a shoulder injury in February last year and she looked to have lost no form. Roosters juniors play their final games of season

The Cobar Roosters juniors played their final matches of the 2024 Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League competition on Saturday.

The Under 9s, Under 14s and Under 16s played their Round 12 matches in Wellington while the Under 10s took on Narromine Red in Dubbo.

The Cobar Under 12s had a bye in the final round of the competition.

The Roosters Under 14s ended their season on a high with a 38-14 win over Wellington.

Rowdy Barton scored twice for Cobar and converted five goals.

Tate Sinclair scored a double with team mates Eli Martin and Josh Francisco also crossing for a try each.

The Cobar Under 16s were heavily penalized in their 60-0 loss to their Wellington counterparts.

In the Under 9s uncontested game, Rosie George was unstoppable running in five tries for Cobar and Jason Cleary also landed a try for the Roosters.

Rosie earned the Coaches Award and Jason collected the Subway Players’ Player award.

In the Under 10s uncontested match with Narromine Red, the Subway Award went to Kade Taylor and Liam Cain earned the Coaches Award.

Liam also celebrated scoring his first try for the season.

The Cobar Under 9s and Under 10s have had a great competition with all of the players each scoring a try this season.

Golfie Gophers ran away with the win in darts

The Golfie Gophers ran away with a big 8-1 win over RSL Minors in the local darts competition last Wednesday.

The other games were closer with Golfie Dartaholics just getting the better of Western Grumblebums to win 5-4, Empire Barflies also won their match against Golfie Spearchuckers by just one game 5-4, and RSL showed good form to beat RSL Dingoes 6-3 in their match up last week.

Craig Jones recorded the men’s highest score of the week landing a big 180 throw.

Lesley Hooker’s score of 132 was the highest throw of the week for the ladies.

Jason Collier was responsible for the men’s highest peg out of the week with 70, while 40 was the best peg out of the week for the ladies, and was recorded by Mom Thou.
