Two year old Max McKenna and his three year old girlfriend Tippy Evans enjoyed a pre-Valentine’s Day romantic picnic in the park on Saturday (mainly so we could get this great shot). Tippy brought her picnic basket, Max’s mum prepared the grazing platter of grapes, strawberries and biscuits, our editor shouted them Kinder chocolate and a bottle of sparkling apple juice while Anni’s helped out with the teddies, cushions and roses props. New cameras to track freight movements

World-first camera technology is to be installed on the Barrier Highway and Kidman Way to help Transport for NSW better understand freight movements throughout the west.

Transport for NSW is continuing to install machine learning traffic cameras across the state, with the state’s north and west to now become part of the program.

The Transport for NSW trial uses new counting and classifying cameras to better understand freight movements to help reduce congestion, improve road safety outcomes, and encourage more efficient deliveries.

The new technology is seen as another tool that can be used to help manage increasing freight volumes, which are expected to increase across NSW by 28 per cent by 2036 over a 2018 baseline.

High-definition pictures of heavy vehicles are taken by the cameras, which are then classified into the type of vehicle in transit and the type of cargo being transported.

This heavy vehicle traffic information will enable Transport for NSW to better understand freight movements with the aim of assisting long-term planning for the movement of goods in NSW. The cameras are not used for enforcement or monitoring people or private vehicles.

Memorial plaque laid to remember a Cobar character A memorial plaque was laid last week to honour a Cobar ‘character icon’ Jan Kowalski, or John the Balt as he was more commonly known.

The plaque was laid in the garden of the old Council Chambers building in Linsley Street, which now houses the Far West Family Day Care offices.

The gesture was part of a community initiative, led by local resident Jill Weaving, to recognise and remember the contributions past ‘character icons’ have made to our town.

In October 2021, Jill formed a community committee to help raise funds to restore the graves of two well-known Cobar icons, Kate McKenzie and John the Balt, as neither had any family to speak of.

Kate was buried at the Cobar cemetery and her grave was restored and a new headstone was laid in March last year.

As John the Balt was buried in an unmarked grave in Orange where he died in 1982, it was decided that a plaque would be laid for John in Cobar to remember his contribution.

John the Balt is reported to have arrived in Cobar around 1949 as a displaced person following WWII. He was one of hundreds of Baltic men in the western area at the time working on the railway line at the New Occidental Mine.

John was also a gifted artist and his work included landscapes, murals (as can be seen on the wall in the old quilt shop in Marshall Local residents Joan Maiden and Jill Weaving have been working for some time to get Street) and the ornate ceilings of two rooms recognition for one of Cobar’s character icons, Jan Kowalski (more commonly known as in the old Council Chambers building (hence the choice of location for his memorial John the Balt). A memorial plaque was last week laid in the garden of the old Shire Council Chambers building (now the Family Day Care office) where John painted the plaque).

“Johnny was a sad person who was both ornate ceilings. [Insert: One of the painted ceilings.] loved and pitied and never hurt anyone but himself,” local historian John Collins wrote.

It’s reported John the Balt suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after his terrible treatment as a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp during WWII. As a result, he became a drunk which landed him in jail on many occasions, and where it’s reported he did more of his paintings.

Macquarie Home Stay starts next phase of build

The Macquarie Home Stay (MHS) accommodation facility in Dubbo (which is used by many Cobar residents) has commenced their Stage 2 expansion.

MHS Managing Director, Rod Crowfoot announced on Monday Orange-based building contractor, Renascent Regional P/L, had been appointed to carry out the expansion of the patient accommodation facility.

Mr Crowfoot said the expansion, which will include a further 26 self-contained units on the existing site, will support better health outcomes for the residents of rural NSW. “This expansion has been keenly followed by many guests who use our facility and the community at large, understanding the critical need that has existed for a number of years,” Mr Crowfoot said.

The build is expected to be completed by the end of October this year.

Mr Crowfoot said the concept of Macquarie Home Stay was started in 2011 by Cobar mayor, the late Lilliane Brady OAM, and the then Member for Dubbo Dawn Fardell.

“Lilliane was a strong advocate for her region and posed the question: ‘What can Dubbo do for all the Cobar mums who have to come to deliver their baby in Dubbo?’

“Well eight years later, Home Stay opened their doors,” Mr Crowfoot said.

He said the Cobar community were “strong users of Home Stay” for various medical treatments and specialist appointments.

The NSW Government has completed a perimeter fence, gates and permanent signage around the Kaloogleguy Reserve as part of staged works to clean-up asbestos contamination at the site.

A 60-hectare section of the 6,350-hectare reserve (vacant land west of the caravan park) was dug up without authorisation by a member of the public in 2019.

The ploughing brought to the surface material including asbestos that had been previously dumped. This posed a health risk to the local Cobar community.

A $325,000 investment by Crown Lands has constructed an eight kilometre fence around the impacted area.

Along with the fencing, 19 gates were also constructed on existing tracks for fire management on the reserve, and permanent signs have been erected to warn the local community about the presence of asbestos.

A Crown Lands spokesperson said they have been working with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and Cobar Shire Council to determine safe ways to manage the asbestos found on the site.

“This included extensive soil sampling, air and dust monitoring around the impacted area, which was undertaken by the Soil Conservation Service.

“Crown Lands will now plan for a second stage of the project to clean up the contamination on the site and identify opportunities to regenerate the land,” the spokesperson said.

“It is hoped the whole 60-hectare area will one day again be available for recreational use once the area has been deemed safe.”

Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said public safety is the number one priority in managing asbestos.

“The construction of the fence around the impacted area will ensure no members of the public are exposed to potential contaminants.

“Crown Lands will now work towards rehabilitating the site to ensure asbestos remnants are removed and the area can be rehabilitated and made safe for future use,” Mr Kamper said.

Member for Barwon Roy Butler said the Kaloogleguy Reserve is well used by locals.

“There are lots of tracks that people use for walking, cycling, motorbike and four-wheel drive use.

“That’s why it is very pleasing to see the impacted part of the reserve fenced off and warning signs clearly displayed so people stay clear of the affected area while the government gets on with the job of fixing it up for good,” Mr Butler said.

Aboriginal nursing cadet at Cobar Health Service Four NSW Aboriginal Nursing and Midwifery Cadets at Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) have completed their training and will take up ongoing positions across the district.

One of the four graduates will be taking up a position at Cobar Health Service later this year while the others will be posted in Bathurst, Mudgee and Dubbo.

Minister for Regional Health Ryan Park welcomed the new staff and said they were an important boost to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce in NSW. “I’m really pleased the NSW Health Aboriginal Nursing Cadetship Program continues to see more and more graduates, ultimately leading to improved health services for Aboriginal communities,” Mr Park said.

“As Regional Health Minister, two of my key focus areas is building up our regional workforce and improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“This program delivers on both.”

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty David Harris said initiatives like the cadetship program are an important part of closing the gap.

“The cadetship program shows the NSW Government’s commitment to closing the gap in health outcomes,” Mr Harris said.

“We know for health outcomes to improve, Aboriginal people need Aboriginal nurses working in hospitals, community and senior management positions and this group of graduates will play a vital role in caring for our communities.”

Jackie Corliss, WNSWLHD Graduate Programs and Traineeship Manager, said the NSW Health Aboriginal Nursing Cadetship Program aims to increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses across the state, and improve health services for Aboriginal communities.

“We currently have nine Aboriginal cadets across our District and four cadets are graduating from the program,” Ms Corliss said “The program is designed to financially assist Aboriginal Nursing Cadets during their study, while also providing academic assistance and supporting their transition into the workplace.

“We’re delighted to have offered these cadets ongoing employment within the District as graduates.”

Tony Martin, WNSWLHD Executive Director Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing, said the initiative aligns with the District’s Reconciliation Action Plan, launched last year with a commitment to increase the Aboriginal workforce.

“Providing career opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the field of nursing can make a significant positive impact on the health of our Aboriginal communities,” Mr Martin said.

The benefits of the cadetship program include 12 weeks paid employment in the clinical setting in addition to the clinical experience and knowledge gained as undergraduate nursing students, enhanced job readiness and support from the District’s staff including an Aboriginal mentor.

WNSWLHD is also in the process of recruiting a further four cadets to start later this year.

Grants to prepare for droughts

Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) is encouraging community organisations in agriculture-dependent parts of Australia to apply for the latest round of Small Network Grants for initiatives that build community preparedness and resilience to future drought.

The Small Network Grants program is supported by the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund through the Helping Regional Communities Prepare for Drought Initiative.

Grants are available through two streams of funding for simple, one-off, or seed-type initiatives designed to strengthen local networks and capabilities of remote, rural or regional communities.

Stream 1 offers grants up to $20,000 to all agriculture-dependent remote, rural or regional areas (except Stream 2 locations) while Stream 2 grants offer up to $50,000 and are available for a range of different areas including Far West NSW. Health warning

With warmer air and water temperatures, residents in Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) are being urged to take simple precautions around untreated or poorly treated water to protect themselves and their loved ones from a very rare but serious infection.

Amoebic meningoencephalitis is an extremely rare brain infection caused by an amoeba which lives in warm, fresh water and soil. While many people can have contact with the amoebas, only a small number develop serious illness.

WNSWLHD Public Health Director Priscilla Stanley said people shouldn’t be alarmed by primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, but in summer months it can present a risk that can be avoided with some easy precautions.

“Every summer we remind communities that warm conditions that increase water temperatures mean any unchlorinated water supply that seasonally exceeds 30 degrees Celsius or continually exceeds 25 degrees Celsius may be a risk,” Ms Stanley said.

Temperatures over the past week have varied with the Bureau recording a top of 30 degrees on Wednesday before we had our coolest day of the week on Thursday, when the thermometer only reached a top of 23 degrees.

First round victory

Shooters had to contend with some windy weather A small field of four shooters had to contend with windy conditions in the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s standard match on Sunday.

It was a close match between Michael Garbutt and Robert Neate in the Precision series with Neate in front in the first four series before Garbutt out-shot him in the 20 second and 10 second series rounds to finish in front.

Garbutt finished with a score of 482 off pistol and, combined with his handicap of 80, finished with a total score of 562.

Robert Neate had 420-48-468; Joe Simes recorded 290-219-509 and Anita Neate finished with a score of 181-308-489.

John Stingemore officiated as Range officer.

In the Air Pistol match (shot under the direction of Tim Turton officiating as Range officer) Chris Driver had a score of 490 off pistol and, with his handicap of 96, finished with a total score of 586.

This week’s event will be a Sports/Centre Fire Sports match.

Camels commence Training for the Cobar Camels Rugby

The Red team made a good start to the new Junior Touch competition last Thursday at Ward Oval recording a big win over Orange in the 9-12 years division.

Plush (0.16) and Harland (0.22) filled the minor placings in the 50m swim while Bill Fugar (0.18) and John Carswell (1.19) were the second and third placegetters in the 100m event.

Fugar teamed up with Stephen Clark to win the Brace Relay novelty event with 0.35 seconds off their combined time ahead of Murray Harland/Powell (0.68) and Carswell/Matt Harland (0.78).

Club commenced last Wednesday at the Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval and 10 players turned up.

Some were keen as mustard, others were certainly interested but all were curious as to the immediate direction of the club.

Head coach Mark Aumua ran a light training session after which he, assistant coaching staff Nick Prass and Deon Gordon, and guest “Coach” Justin Sampson, spoke and engaged in a ‘Meet and Greet’ session with all assembled.

“I have been encouraged by the number of “new” rugby players who have emerged to commit to a season with the Camels and I have also been reassured by several of the 2023 squad that they are back for 2024,” Aumua said.

Club president Peter Payne said he was pleased with the turn out, which included a number of key players who will play a critical role in the team this season.

Payne was also pleased to accept some apologies from a few more potential players who were unable to attend due to shift work.

“It all bodes well for the season ahead,” he said.

Training sessions will held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

New junior touch season kicks off at Ward Oval It seemed the magic number was ‘11’ when it came to scoring winning points in the first round of the Junior 13-16 years Touch competition at Ward Oval on Thursday.

Yellow scored 11 points to beat Pink 11-2 in their game while Green also finished with 11 points in their 11-6 win over Blue.

Six Yellow players scored tries in their match with Pink with Maddie Bruce and Clay McDonald running in two each and Aiden Swan, Rowdy Barton, Skyla Fairfull and Talas Burke each crossed for a try.

Pink’s two points came from a try each to Jackson Muldoon and Will Oborn.

Maddie and Clay shared the game’s Best & Fairest points with Pink’s Lachlan Brookman.

Jaxon Burke ran in four tries to help Green to their win with Rhylee Patterson scoring a double. Sosie Barton and Kai McCosker also touched down for one try each.

Blue’s points came from two tries to George McDonald and one each to Ella Oborn, Jack Rogers and Tim Eves.

George, Ella and Jaxon earned the referee’s B&F points.

The first round match between Blue and Yellow in the 9-12 years age group was a thriller with the match finishing in a 6-all draw.

Blue’s try scorers were Alfie Toomey (2), Dusty McDonald, Thomas Preisig and Holly Watt.

For Yellow, Austin Kane (2), Hugo Josephson, Lucy Tiffen and Riley Bruce were their try scorers.

Clean sweep of the pool for Henry Cobar Swimming Club was represented by just one member at Trangie’s annual Short Course Qualifying Swimming Carnival on Saturday.

It was well worth the trip with Henry Knight finishing with 11 first places in his 11 events.

He also finished the day with 10 new personal best times.

Henry’s best result was in his 100m Butterfly swim where he shaved 5.30 seconds off his previous best time.

He also bettered his 100m Freestyle time by 3.04 seconds, his Individual Medley time by 2.69 seconds and his previous 100m Breaststroke time by 2.36 seconds.

Veteran touch team still has plenty of life left in them The veteran team in the Mixed Open Touch competition kicked off the new 2024 season by recording the biggest win in the opening round on Thursday night at Ward Oval.

Phat Athletes have a record number of premiership titles under their belts and last week’s match looked like a return to their glory days when they trounced the new team in the competition, Guns N’ Hoses, 25-7.

Grace Burge “hogged the ball” in the match to score a career best six tries and contribute 12 points to their final tally (as female tries are worth double points).

Team mates Georgia Boland and Tim Hillam ran in three tries each, Mitch Shields scored twice and Bianka Jacobson also crossed for a try.

In reply, Haymish McLeod scored twice for Guns N’ Hoses with Kelly Smith, Kiera Mckay and Zac McCombes touching down for one try each.

Burge was a clear choice for the referee’s Best & Fairest points with Boland and McCombes also collecting points.

Last year’s A Grade premiers, the King Roosters, were knocked off their perch by The Blossoms in their match up last week.

Ryan Urquhart led the scoring for Concrete Cowboys running in two tries with team mates Bridgette Negfeldt, Chris Crotty, Fraser Talu, Neve Carter, Rori Urquhart and Toby Greenwood all scoring a try each.

CATS’ try scorers were Damon Bruce, Maddie Bruce and Sam Best.

B&F points were shared by Greenwood, Damon Bruce and Molly Broughton (Concrete Cowboys).

The Red Hot Chilli Steppers shared the scoring around in their 13-2 win over Rusty Snails.

Brennah Aumua (3), Anita Atuau, Kayla Hasson, Sione Fakahua and Tia Turner were their try scorers.

Rusty Snails’ two points came from a try to Ben Dormer and also one to Jesse Murphy.

In the individual events, Dave Mexted finished first in both the 30m and 50m RSL Handicap finals; Carswell grabbed second place in the 50m President’s handicapped swim; Ben Plush was second in the 100m Open Handicap final; Murray Harland finished third in the 30m Open Handicap final and Stephen Clark placed third in the 50m Open Handicap final.

A very rare occurrence happened at the Cobar Yabbies regular weekly swim last Tuesday at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool when the 30 metres freestyle event finished in a three-way tie.

Mathematically the odds of this happening are very low as the Yabbies events are handicapped with swimmers aiming to swim as close as possible to their nominated times (which are a whole number).

By the end of the second heat Shane Josephson had been the one to beat when he finished within 0.06 seconds of his nominated time.

In Heat 3, Ben Plush had nominated 18 seconds and touched the wall at 18.03 seconds, 0.03 seconds slower than his nominated time.

Murray Harland was aiming for 19 seconds and completed his swim just under in 18.97 seconds while Chris Powell was looking for 21 seconds and clocked a time of 21.03.
