“The conditions have subsided and are now more favourable,” he said.

“We are expecting another front tomorrow [Wednesday] and Thursday that may cause issues, but really don’t know until we get it.”

Thanks to a Careflight trauma care training session in Cobar on the weekend, the chances are now better of someone local having the right skills to help.

A dozen community members that included police, Rural Fire Service, SES personnel, as well as a nurse, attended the Careflight workshop at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Sunday.

The Careflight education workshops aim to build resilience in local communities by improving access to health services and outcomes across Australia.

CareFlight’s trauma care workshops are oneof-a-kind and are provided at no cost to participants.

The three Careflight trainers, Mick Lewis, John Lenahan and Greg Ferguson, who have more than 75 years experience in emergency situations between them, travel all around the country providing the unique trauma care training.

They led the Cobar group through a variety of simulated emergency scenarios on Sunday including a small child being hit by a vehicle and a worker falling from a tree and suffering a chainsaw injury.

Mr Lewis praised the work of the Cobar workshop participants saying they had remained cool, calm and confident and that their emergency scenario incidents were “well led, well run and well executed”.

Careflight’s Head of Operations – Education and Training Lara Miller said everyone should have the opportunity to be trained and equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence to respond to emergencies and help save lives.

“First responders do an incredible job for their community and can be called to the scene of an accident before additional medical help arrives,” Mrs Miller said.

“Through our partnership with local organisations, health services and emergency services, we are reinforcing the links in the chain of survival by ensuring that a higher level of care is available as soon as an incident occurs.

“This workshop is a boost for the emergency services in the Far West.

“Off the back of an incredibly difficult few years facing floods and the pandemic, CareFlight is delighted to be able to bring the training into the community, thanks to government grants and community fundraising.

“Our aim is to empower locals with lifesaving skills and essential inter-agency collaboration, for the ultimate goal of creating a safer society,” Mrs Miller said.

The workshops are part of CareFlight’s grassroots initiative to create a more resilient and healthier community.

The role of RSL Sub Branches in the community is to coordinate services and commemorations on key occasions such as Anzac Day, and Remembrance Day and advocate for the wellbeing of all veterans and their families.

Outgoing president, Mr Neale explained RSL Sub Branches do not own or operate clubs.

He said there’s also the misconception that it’s “an old fellas club” and was just for World War I and II veterans.

“That’s not the case,” he said.

It’s Australia’s largest ex-service organisation, that aims to connect veterans and their families to services and provides them with an outlet for community engagement.

Mr Hill said he hoped more younger local veterans, servicemen and women, would join the Sub Branch and have an input into the group’s activities.

Apart from Mr Neale stepping down (due to leaving town), the rest of the executive committee remains unchanged with Chris Boucher returned as vice president, Stephen Dutton retains the secretary’s role and Colleen Boucher will continue as treasurer.

Other non-executive positions of welfare officer, pensioner officer and recruiting officer were also filled.

New Covid vaccine The new COVID-19 vaccine to target the current Omicron variant of the virus will soon be available in Cobar.

The category of vaccines known as XBB 1.5 was approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in October and can be used as a primary vaccination dosage as well as booster dosages.

Pharmacy Guild of Australia National President, Professor Trent Twomey said the new vaccine will be more targeted at the virus which is currently circulating among the population.

“With COVID-19 cases on the rise, it is important that anyone who is due for their vaccination does so as soon as they can at their local community pharmacy,” Professor Twomey said.

“Health authorities have recommended that vaccines move away from formulations which target the original or ancestral strain.”

Professor Twomey said that the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) is not recommending those who are not due for their vaccination to get an additional booster because of the arrival of the new vaccine.

“The advice remains that you must wait six months from your last jab to get your next booster shot and older vaccinations still provide protection against the severest of symptoms,” he said.

The vaccines available are being manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna. Pfizer has two formulations with one for patients aged five and over and less than 12 years, and one for patients aged 12 and over. The Moderna vaccine is for patients aged 12 years and over.

Eden said having a “sister studio” will also have benefits for her students as they will be able to team up to compete at eisteddfods.

Eden also has plans for the two studios to join up for dance camps.

Another benefit of having two studios is that Eden’s CCDC assistant teaching staff and the three Temora staff will get an opportunity to gain more experience working with a wider group of students across the two studios.

The new centre is just one of a number of new projects Eden has on the go at the moment.

Council staff don Christmas t-shirts for charity cause

Cobar Shire Council donned Christmas t-shirts and raised money for the Macquarie Home Stay facility last Thursday in an effort to claim back-to-back Merriest Christmas Council Champion titles.

The annual Christmas T-Shirt Day fundraiser was started by Moree Plains Shire Council three years ago to encourage some healthy competition between councils, while raising money for charity.

Cobar Shire took part for the first time last year and went all out raising $12,000 for the Euabalong community who were cut off by floodwaters at the time.

They were the highest fundraiser among the nine councils who took part which earned them the 2022 Merriest Christmas Council Champion title.

Council’s Human Resources Manager Summer Patterson coordinated the event last year and again this year for Cobar Shire.

“I wasn’t going to do it this year because my plate (as is everyone’s) is overwhelmingly overflowing, but I figured the primary goal doesn’t have to be winning, it can simply be to spread some festive cheer and raising a few humble dollars for charity in the process … so that’s what we did,” Summer said.

“The rules of engagement are that you can only raise money on the actual day.

“This year they added a rule that you can only fundraise in-house, meaning only Council staff can contribute to the occasion…a rule that was added after we wiped the floor with the other contestants last year by getting the whole community involved,” Summer said.

She estimates Cobar Shire raised just over $1,000 through a morning tea, a bake sale, a 100 Club raffle and a guessing competition.

And did Cobar Shire Council win back-toback Merriest Christmas Council Champion titles?

Laura Hall at Moree Plains Shire Council said it’s looking like Cobar will finish as the winner again this year.

She is however still awaiting the tallies of two other participating councils before the winner can be decided.

Changes to NSW food businesses requirements School canteens, children’s services and coffee vendors serving food in the Cobar local government area now have more time to meet new food safety requirements – while fundraisers will not need to meet them at all – following a NSW Government legislation amendment.

From last week, Standard 3.2.2A of the Australia/New Zealand Food Standards Code introduced new requirements for businesses that handle and serve unpackaged, ready-toeat food requiring temperature control.

The requirements include appointing a Food Safety Supervisor (someone certified with food safety skills and knowledge), ensuring food handlers are trained and demonstrating safe food practices.

Those food businesses who will have to appoint a Food Safety Supervisor, for the first time, will have until December 2024 to comply.

The changes also include an exemption from the new requirements for fundraising.

Cobar Shire Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator, Karen Warren said the change was particularly good news for local charitable and not-for-profit groups.

“This Standard would have placed an additional burden on some of our local community organisations, such as children’s sport clubs that hold barbecues and canteens on game day and other charitable organisations,” Karen said.

“These groups will still need to ensure they sell safe food and meet the other requirements of the Food Standards Code – as they are now.”

Karen said council would take an educative approach with local businesses as they transitioned to the new requirements.

“If local food businesses haven’t yet looked at the new requirements, it’s now time to do so,” she said.

“Most cafes, restaurants and takeaways are already required to have a Food Safety Supervisor – they will only need to check that their certificate is still valid, ensure food handlers are trained and be able to prove safe food practices.”

The NSW Food Authority has a range of resources to help businesses – including a free online food handler training course.

Toomey finished the night with the best tally of 11 points, just ahead of Paul Swainston and Jarred Davey, both on 10 points.

While not actually winning any of the four events contested on the night, Toomey however had two podium place finishes and a 5th spot which earned him the top total.

Kyle Roberts opened the night with a win in the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim finishing within 0.18 seconds of his nominated time. There was a tie for second place with both Kevin ‘Rusty’ Mitchell and Swainston finishing within 0.25 seconds of their nominated times.

Chris Powell claimed first place honours in the 50m swim when he was well out in front with 0.15 seconds off his time.

Further back in second place was Bill Fugar (0.34) and Toomey grabbed third spot on 0.47.

Davey was the best finisher in the 100m event when he clocked in 0.03 seconds within his nominated time.

Toomey was second (0.50) and Swainston finished third on 0.83.

Fugar and Powell teamed up to win the kickboard Brace Relay novelty event.

The pair were within 1.73 seconds of their nominated time.

Todd Fugar and Matt Harland were second (2.25) and Toomey and Swainston were third on 2.31.

Brussel Sprouts are into the junior touch grand final Brussel Sprouts and Pink Panthers will go head to head in the Junior Touch 13-16 years grand final game tomorrow.

It should be a close match with the Sprouts going into the game as slight favourites after having narrowly beaten Pink Panthers in the past two encounters. (Both teams however have players away on a school excursion.)

Brussel Sprouts won their grand final spot after they easily accounted for the Mighty Minions 11-3 in last week’s elimination semi final.

The club held its regular End of Year Shiai (competition) on Sunday, with the following results: Yonens (U13yrs) 1st—Joseph Theakston, 2nd—Tim McClure, 3rd—Ronin Chandler.

Shonens (U16yrs) 1st—Caleb Theakston, 2nd—Mark Hibbert, 3rd—Jaina Chandler.

Sienen (16yrs+) 1st—Jeremy Theakston, 2nd—Paul Theakston, 3rd—Connor Caton.

With no Mons (U10yrs) members in the club, there were some extra trophies left over, so a ‘special’ veterans (Over 40yrs) division was contested: 1st—Robbie Cummins, 2nd—Ray Chandler, 3rd—Paul Theakston.
