Locals join in NAIDOC Week celebrations

Wiradjuri elder and youth mentor, Ralph Naden from the Ralph Naden Cultural Centre at Balladoran (near Gilgandra) and his young dancers provided entertainment at Cobar’s NAIDOC Week celebrations in Drummond Park last Thursday. The almost 77 year old, who was the recipient of an Order of Australia medal in 2019 for his volunteer work with youth, put on a great show which included an explanation of the symbolic meanings of each dance move. Children and adults from the audience were invited to join in. Local Ngiyampaa elders, Tyrone Griffiths performed a smoking ceremony and Elaine Ohlsen delivered a Welcome to Country as part of the day’s celebrations. Representatives of 10 local service providers were involved in organizing the day which offered a variety of art and craft activities, games, food and information stalls.

Graffiti hinders Youthie project

Cobar Shire Council general manager Peter Vlatko inspecting the graffiti damage at the Cobar Youth Centre yesterday morning. Mr Vlatko said a review of CCTV footage from the main street and Drummond Park area from Monday night/Tuesday morning has identified that the damage was caused by local youths. He said it was very disappointing as the whole purpose of the youth centre project was to provide a great facility for youth. Cleaning up this damage will now cause a delay in finishing the project. More graffiti was found at the skate park and on a window of a main street business while damage was also caused to play equipment at the park. The incident has been reported to police and they have also been provided with the CCTV footage.

Police catch up with the thief

Central North Police District detectives have arrested a 33 year old man from Bourke in relation to a theft from a business in Cobar on June 30.

The man was arrested in Bourke on Friday after he was identified as a person of interest in a CCTV footage image provided by a local business to police.

Police will allege the man broke into a retail business in Marshall Street in the early hours of June 30 and stole approximately $2,000 worth of clothing and footwear and an amount of cash.

Police have recovered some of the stolen clothing which will be used as evidence.

The man was charged with break, enter, steal offences and was refused bail.

He appeared at Dubbo Local Court earlier this week to answer the charges.

Police have praised the public for their assistance in identifying the man and, in particular, the help they received from Cobar Shire Council and local businesses who provided them with CCTV footage that helped to identify the thief.

Air animal rescue was the first of its kind for Cobar ROAR, Cobar’s Rural Outback Animal Rescue/Respite service, last week joined forces with Animal Air Rescue to pull off a rescue mission, the likes of which hasn’t been seen in Cobar before.

The newly formed Animal Air Rescue service (with three pilots, two planes and a dedicated group of animal advocates) flew into Cobar Airport last Friday morning and departed soon after with a precious cargo of 16 wolfhound pups and their brave mum, with the aim of re-homing them all.

The mother and the two litters of wolfhound pups she was feeding (one is believed to have been hers and the other a litter she took on), were approximately four weeks and three weeks old respectively.

They had been surrendered to the pound in Brewarrina last month and handed over to ROAR in Cobar to help find them new homes.

ROAR volunteers Wizzy Knezevic and Janine Mann, who have been looking after the mum and her pups for a couple of weeks (one of which had special medical needs), were a bit emotional when they handed them all over to the rescue team on Friday.

The pair were however relieved that the dogs would all be in good hands, would have access to the expert care they needed and would also have a very good chance of all being re-homed.

The rescue team that flew into Cobar last week had a local connection, with Nicole Manns, who grew up in Cobar, and her partner Digby Hogan who are based in Queensland, the founders of the Animal Air Rescue volunteer service.

Nicole said she and Digby had been involved for some time as volunteers in the foster care system for puppies and, with Digby also being a qualified pilot (as a hobby), they thought that if they combined the two services, they’d be able to make a difference in more animals’ lives.

The Animal Air Rescue organisation’s team of pilots, vets and animal advocates all volunteer their time and talents to help animals in need with their rescue missions all selffunded.

“We were actually able to raise probably 80 percent of the costs for the trip today through

a GoFundMe page during the week, which was unreal,” Digby said on Friday.

“That makes a big difference, it’s not cheap to fly but it’s the difference between saving a life or not saving a life.

“For all of us here today, it’s really important that these animals are given the best opportunity that they can.”

For last week’s rescue mission, Nicole and Digby linked up with Off the Chain K9 Rescue in Toowoomba who coordinated the rescue and rehabilitation of the puppies with ROAR and also Safe Haven Animal Rescue.

Nicole explained that puppies, like children, have different experiences when flying.

She said during the flight they stay at a low altitude to help with the pressurization in the plane and the dogs are packed into aviation crates.

“They are safely confined, we keep them warm and once they are settled, they are usu-

ally pretty fine to fly,” Nicole said.

“Puppies tend to be unsettled like babies do but after they settle down they are usually pretty good.”

Nicole said after mum and her pups arrived in Toowoomba they would all be vet checked and looked after by a team of foster carers.

“Mum gets desexed and the puppies get vaxed, desexed and wormed and then re homed,” she explained.

Digby and Nicole have a goal for the Animal Air Rescue to eventually be able to offer the animal aeromedical service to anywhere in Australia and also have headquarters set up in each state.

“There is a big issue with regional pounds being overcrowded and under resourced, where in the metro city areas we’ve got more resources and that’s where rescued animals have better chances of being re-homed,” Digby said.

All-Star professional wrestlers coming to Cobar tomorrow Cobar will get to experience live professional wrestling tomorrow night at the Cobar Services Club.

And for those lucky ones who have ringside seats for the All-Star Wrestling Australia Winter Warfare show, they’ll get to see the wrestling action up real close.

All-Star Wrestling Australia promoter, Mitch Christen, said Cobar’s wrestling fans will get to see six bouts at tomorrow night’s huge two hour event.

“There is nothing like seeing All-Star Wrestling live and in person,” Mitch said.

“While there’s always been plenty of showmanship in professional wrestling, I’d describe it as a live stunt show.

“These guys really put their bodies on the line.

tomorrow night’s Winter Warfare Cobar show including former WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) Superstar, ‘The Masterpiece’ Chris Masters.

Masters rose to fame with the RAW [Real American Wrestling] brand for his full nelson hold that he called the Masterlock.

“It took over two years for the hold to be broken with Bobby Lashley eventually breaking the hold on an episode of RAW. “Masters holds victories over the likes of John Cena, Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels and recently held the prestigious NWA [National Wrestling Alliance] National Heavyweight Title!” Mitch said.

At the Cobar bout, ‘The Masterpiece’ will take on JD Strauss when they compete for the Eastern States title.

Also on the card for Cobar, is Keegan Brettle, a former All-Star Wrestling Heavyweight Champion.

“One of New South Wales’ most popular wrestlers, Big Keegzy B loves a beer and a laugh but when the bell rings he is one of the state’s most dominating wrestlers,” Mitch said.

Keegan has recently enjoyed a 300+ day run as All-Star Wrestling Heavyweight Champion and looks forward to being part of the Winter Warfare tour.

High flying 19 year old, Aries, who is one of the most popular young wrestlers on the All-Star Wrestling Australia roster, along with his Tag Team mate, Mikey Lord, will also appear in Cobar. The pair are the current All-Star Tag Team Champions.

Also signed on for the Winter Warfare Tour card is middleweight champion, the “Kiss Stealin” Bee Boy, John Whelan, whose signature moves include the Stunner, Violet Crumble and the Bees Knee.

Junior heavyweight title holder, Mickey Vendetta and heavy weight wrestler, Akell, are also among the wrestling stars appearing at tomorrow’s Cobar show.

Warning: COVID hasn’t left us

Despite the winding back of mandates and the ending of lockdowns, State Member for Barwon, Roy Butler warns “COVID hasn’t left us”.

“In fact, there has been a bit of a resurgence of the disease in recent weeks,” Mr Butler said.

“Health authorities have been warning us to take more precautions, to keep our distance in public places, to be diligent about washing hands and to wear a mask in public if that helps you feel safer.

“Australia recently passed the dreaded milestone of 10,000 deaths from the disease and it doesn’t look like slowing down.

“Health authorities still advise people to get vaccinated against COVID and any other diseases that are prevalent in the community and have recently made the fourth COVID vaccination shot available for people over 30 who choose to access it.”

Mr Butler urges people who haven’t had a flu shot to take advantage of the government’s free flu shot program which has been extended until the end of this week.

“Flu has also made a resurgence now people are mixing and mingling again, and there are some particularly nasty flu strains going around, with few people having a natural immunity to the new strains.

“Be careful, winter is still the worst time for colds and flu,” Mr Butler said.

Artists on holidays

Participants in the Cobar Shire Library’s school holidays art and craft workshop on Monday morning, Ethan Jebb, Christopher Florance and Sam McKervey with Library staff member Krissy Mann. The workshop activity for 5-7 year olds was sand art with participants creating snails, caterpillars, butterflies and hot air balloon pictures to name a few. Freemasons loss is a district loss

Dear editor, Some weeks ago, The Cobar Weekly announced the closure of the Cobar Masonic Lodge after 142 years.

I guess that is a reflection of our times when people have so many alternatives available to them.

In my time at Cobar, the annual Masonic Ball was one of the highlights of the winter season.

In 1965, my late father, Thomas Kelly was the Worshipful Master of the Cobar Lodge.

Together with my late mother, Muriel Kelly, they presided over the presentation of the debutants in that year.

Although never a Freemason myself, I remember the Cobar Lodge raised considerable funds for deserving causes without any fanfare.

Your readers may be interested in my own unsolicited experience of Masonic help.

My disabled daughter required surgery which could only be done by one surgeon in Sydney and the Armidale Masonic Lodge provided $15,000, a most generous donation at the time.

My family will be forever grateful for this help.

The loss of the freemasons’ activity in Cobar is also the Cobar district’s loss.

Monument design is “appropriate” Dear editor I would like to make a comment, as an Iron Ringer, regarding the design of the Cobar Iron Ringer Monument which was in The Cobar Weekly Page 6, June 29, 2022.

I like the design as is, and I feel that it is most appropriate with the Iron Ring being set into or resting on the ground as it connects us to the Earth upon which we (Iron Ringers) were born.

I have not been able to attend a Committee meeting yet, but wanted to comment that I feel that the current design is most suitable.

Sydney band bringing their unique music mix to Cobar Cobar will get to experience a totally different style of music when Sydney-based band, Microfiche, visits next week as part of their national tour.

Over the past few months the band has taken their unique mix of jazz improvisation and composition on tour to Hobart, Melbourne and Adelaide. They are now currently touring regional NSW and one of the band members, Phillipa Murphy-Haste, spoke to The Cobar Weekly last week.

“We formed in 2015 at the Sydney Con [Sydney Conservatorium of Music]. We all knew each other, we had similar styles of music and we were put in a class together. We’ve played at a lot of different places in Sydney and also performed in Europe at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival,” she said.

Phillipa said one of their most memorable performances was in Stockholm when they played 30 metres underground in a decommissioned nuclear reactor!

She explained how Cobar came to be chosen as one of their venues on their current tour.

“We were looking for places to go and I reached out to Cobar High School music teacher, Laura Andrew,” Phillipa said.

“I’ve known Laura for a while.

“We have a lot of musical connections together—we studied at the Sydney Con, played in the Con Jazz Big Band and also through Young Women in Jazz Workshops.

“I’ve never been to Cobar and I don’t think any other members of the band have either and we’re really looking forward to visiting.”

Phillipa said it’s not likely Cobar audiences will have heard their style of music before.

“It’s not what most people think jazz sounds like, it’s creative, improvised music.

“We’re eclectic in our approach.

“We also have a different way of thinking when it comes to composing.”

Their tour is funded with support from the Australian Council for the Arts and Sydney Improvised Music Association.

In addition to performing a concert next Wednesday night, the band will also be conducting workshops for high school and primary school students demonstrating their instruments. Cobar High students will also get to take part in a composition workshop with the aim of showcasing some of the students’ ideas at the concert.

“I love the workshops - especially primary school children who have wide open ears and

open minds,” Phillipa said.

“We’re thrilled to be visiting and thrilled that “It shows on their faces, and they also have Cobar High’s Taiko ensemble will be opening honest opinions as well!” our concert. We can’t wait!” she said.

Government help

State Member for Barwon, Roy Butler, said government assistance is available for Barwon families who are struggling to make ends meet with the rising costs of living.

“The price of petrol, basic food items, mortgage repayments and power bills, among other things, all continue to remain high or are still rising. Wages are not keeping pace with the price rises, which makes it hard for many, particularly those on lower incomes, to make ends meet. Some of these price rises are particularly hard on the people of Barwon,” he said.

“Fuel prices affect so many aspects of regional life, given that many people have large distances to cover in their daily lives or for their jobs, for important personal business, even just getting children to school.

“While there is a lot more that could be done, the government provides some help in the form of rebates, vouchers, subsidies and other programs,” Mr Butler said.

Cold mornings in Cobar to continue Cobar residents may have had trouble getting out of bed this past week with some very cold starts to the day being recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology.

The thermometer dropped to just 1.3 degrees last Friday, which is well below average for this time of year at 5.1 degrees.

The rest of the week wasn’t much better with 1.6 degrees the minimum on both Saturday and Sunday mornings while 3.3 was the lowest temperature recorded on Monday.

Our daytime temperatures last week hovered pretty close to average, apart from last Wednesday when it reached 19 degrees, which is three degrees warmer than the average for this time of the year.

In addition to being our coldest morning of the week, last Friday was also our coldest day of the week with the thermometer only reaching a top of 13.1 degrees.

The sun shone out on Saturday and Sunday which made their tops (14.6 and 15.2 respec-

tively) seem a bit warmer.

Monday was warmer again when it reached 17.6 degrees.

Similar conditions are forecast for the week ahead with some more cold starts predicted by the Bureau.

We’ll also experience some warmer daytime temperatures which the Bureau has predicted for later in the week.

We can however only expect a top of 13 degrees today.

There’s also a slight chance of a shower of rain today and the outlook for tomorrow is sunny and a top of 14.

It should continue to be mostly sunny and reach 16 degrees on Friday with 17 the forecast maximum for Saturday.

Sunday should be warmer again with 20 degrees the expected top temperature while 18 is the expected maximum for Monday.

There’s a chance we’ll get a few showers of rain on Sunday and also on Monday.

A CALL OUT TO COBAR LOCALS TO VOLUNTEER WITH VINNIES Vinnies is urgently looking for people wanting to give back to the Cobar community by volunteering with its Vinnies shop. There are also opportunities to join the local Vinnies Conference – which is a group of volunteers who provide assistance to those in need in the community. Assistance can include: food hampers, clothing, financial aid, accommodation and other assistance as required.

We have a lovely group of volunteers who have been able to make a positive impact in the local community. The events of the past year have highlighted the importance of community and looking out for people in need. Working in a Vinnies shop and conference is a great chance to meet excellent people and you get the satisfaction knowing that you are helping to support people who fall on hard times.

Golf cart donated for Inter Mine Golf Challenge raffle The 2022 Inter Mine Golf Challenge event is less than three weeks away and the hard working committee are flat out getting ready for it!

The committee has secured sponsorship for

the annual charity golf event from suppliers and local businesses to ensure they can once again help out local organisations.

Past beneficiaries of the charity golf day include ROAR (Rural Outback Animal Rescue

and Respite), RSPCA, local schools, Kubby House Child Care Centre, Cobar Girl Guides and also Dubbo’s Macquarie Homestay (which is used by many Cobar residents).

Inter Mine Golf Challenge committee member Jannine Wilkin said many locals have benefited from the charity golf day and this year looks to be on target to do the same.

“The Golfie is sporting a new addition in the foyer at present with the major sponsor of the golf challenge, Tyre Doctor from Leeton, generously donating a brand new golf cart to be raffled. This will be drawn at the conclusion of the day’s presentation,” Jannine said.

“Tyre Doctor have been most generous over the years supplying many sort after prizes.

“Without the ongoing support of suppliers, the Inter Mine Challenge would not be able to proceed and we’re now into its 30th year!”

Tritton Mine entered the Inter Mine Golf Challenge last year taking the place of the Endeavor Mine following its closure.

CSA Mine is hoping for a hat trick win this year after coming out on top in 2019 and 2021.

(Unfortunately COVID finished as the winner in 2020.)

Peak and Tritton will however be trying their hardest to put a stop to CSA’s run.

All eyes will be on the weather forecast leading up to the three person Ambrose event.

Frasers claim a Stableford win Only four teams contested Saturday’s Men’s Golf Four-Ball-Best-Ball Stableford game.

The winners were the father and son team of Stewart and Mark Fraser who finished with 46 stableford points.

A countback was then needed for second and third places with Steve Manns and Greg Clark never going to win as they were up against Alec Fraser (the men’s golf Captain) and Bill Fugar (the men’s handicapper).

Roosters suffer a narrow loss but they are still out on top!

The Cobar Roosters failed to get the competition points or the silverware in their Boronia Cup challenge game against the Gilgandra Panthers at Gilgandra on Saturday.

The Cobar team however still retains the number one position on the ladder after 11 rounds of the 2022 Christie and Hood Castlereagh Rugby League competition.

It was only the Roosters’ second loss of the season and they went down in a nailbiter by just two points, the final score being 28-26 in favour of the home side after both sides crossed for five tries apiece.

With the lead changing on a number of occasions, the game provided plenty of entertainment with the Roosters drawing first blood to lead 6-0 with a converted try to lock Zane Taylor, before Gilgandra’s industrious second rower Blake Frost scored what was to be the first of his two tries in the match to level it up at 6-all with 20 minutes elapsed.

A well weighted grubber kick, pounced on

by Cobar’s winger Tyler Coughlan, saw the Roosters go out to 10-6 leaders.

That lead was however short lived when they let a ball find touch in goal from the kick off and soon after the resulting goal line drop out, Gilgandra’s captain coach Jamie Towney was able to force his way over the line for a converted try to see the Panthers back in front at 12-10.

Frost went over for his second four pointer just before half time and with the conversion being successful, the home side went to the

sheds holding an 18-10 advantage.

Back-to-back tries for the Roosters (by Reynold Mugugia and Gerald Mackay) early in the second half had the Panthers reeling and behind on the score board, 18-20.

It wasn’t until midway through the second half that the Panthers scored a rapid-fire double to get them out to an all-important eightpoint margin.

With 15 minutes remaining, they led 28-20.

Any thought of the Roosters going away quietly was quickly dispelled, with the visitors seemingly camped within 20 metres of the Gilgandra line and the home side being called on to defend stoutly for the bulk of the final 15 minutes of the encounter.

This they managed to somehow do until they had a player put in the bin for continual ruck infringements with five minutes to go.

Then the Panthers somehow managed to lose a scrum when they had the feed just 10 metres out from their own line, a gift the Roosters seized upon and turned into a converted try to second rower David Watson.

That meant the supporters from both sides had to sit out a frantic final three minutes before the thrilling match came to a conclusion with the Panthers just hanging on to win.

Cobar’s Best & Fairest points went to Coughlan (3), Mugugia (2 and also Players’ Player) and Taylor (1).

The win sees the Panthers draw level with Cobar at the top of the competition ladder but Cobar has a far superior ‘for and against’ record and, as such, they remain the competition leaders at this stage.

Tough opposition

The Cobar Roosterettes came up against tough opposition in Gilgandra in their Castlereagh League Tag Round 11 game at Gilgandra on Saturday.

The hosts controlled the game to finish with a big 58-18 win.

Cobar’s Best & Fairest points were earned by Bianka Jacobson (3), Madasan Taylor (2) and Georgia Boland (1).

Taylor was named Players’ Player.

The Roosterettes are at home to Binnaway Cobar’s Tyler Coughlan pouncing on a Gilgandra Panther player in Saturday’s this Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

Camels were light on for players

The Camel muster (pictured above apart from Tony Jacklin) for their Western Plains Rugby Union Round 10 game at Gulargambone on Saturday. Once again they were “light on” for players. Tyson Brilley, Kevin ‘Rusty’ Mitchell and Peter Payne were not passed fit to have a run. Lachie Mitchell’s soccer playing cousin, Ollie Wilson, put on the boots to give them 12 able bodied men for the game, which was once again another heroic display by the Camels. The match finished with a 37-26 win for the hosts but Cobar were very much in the match until the final minute when Gular scored a late try. Championship bowls a highlight

Round One Singles Championship games were the highlight on the bowling greens at the Golfie on Sunday.

After a grueling 31 ends, Barry Bargwanna claimed victory in the match over Karen Daly.

The scores were 17-2 in favour of Bargwanna by the 12th end and it took another seven ends before Daly clawed her way to double figures!

Bargwanna’s ability to draw consistently won the day and he ended up winning 31-19.

Gerard Livingston and Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey’s match was a 29 end battle between the two expert bowlers.

Livingston bolted out of the blocks early and, by the 9th end, he led by 10 points.

Skeet’s tenacity however was proving to be a thorn in his opponent’s side and by the 21st end, Skeet had grabbed the lead.

The match then became a point for point dual until finally Livingston pulled away to win 31-25.

Last year’s Singles Champion, Michael Sargent, played newcomer Scott Mayne in the last game on the roster for Sunday.

The scores were tight right up to the 14th end before Sargent decided to claim the mat for the next six ends. He took a 10 point lead (which was a sign of things to come) and went on to win 32-18. Sargent now progresses through to the second round.

In social bowls news from Sunday, 12 enthusiasts took to the greens.

The winner of the day was the triples team of Don Roberts, Jimmy Goonrey and Marlene Wynd who finished with a +4 win over Trudy Elder, David Schofield and Doug Hudson.

The other social triples game, which was by all accounts, a “humdinger” of a match, judging by the score cards, had not much difference between the two teams all game.

It came down to the last end when the team Tony Brown, John ‘Shark’ Daly and Allan Gardoll scored four points to finish in a draw with the team of Kyle Roberts, Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod and Peta Zazoniuk.

Pennants Championship dates are displayed on the bowlers’ board at the club and 12 affiliated player nominations are required.—The Second

Success for Samios in Stroke game

Fran Samios was the Stroke event winner in the Ladies’ Golf competition on Sunday after finishing with a 70 net score.

Sally Bannister (74 net) was the runner-up and third spot went to Wan Sipatsa (75 net).

Geraldine Francisco had 76 net for 4th place.

Narelle Kriz was the best putter on the day with 24 putts over the 18 holes.

Last Wednesday’s Par event needed a countback to determine a winner with Susan Goonrey beating Glenda Peebles to the post after each came in with a score of -1.

Geraldine Francisco placed third on -3 and Sally Bannister had -6 for 4th spot.

Closest to the flag on the 8th hole were Geraldine Francisco, Susan Goonrey and Daphne Cross.

A Stableford game will be played today and the Foursomes 27 hole Championships are on Saturday (which is a change from Sunday in the ladies golf program book).

A number of Cobar ladies will make the trip to Hillston on Sunday to participate in their open while a Par game is set down for Sunday at home.—T’d Off

Good fields for annual Bannister Day golf event The annual Bannister Day golf event on Saturday attracted 21 players for the men’s Stableford competition and 17 players for the ladies’ Stableford game.

Steve Manns was the men’s winner finishing the day with a very good score of 43 stableford points while Trudy Elder, (a Bannister family descendant) won the ladies’ event, also with 43 points.

Manns played very well but had some tough competition with Anthony Polack narrowly behind in second place with 41 points.

Stewart Fraser finished third on 37 points and a countback was then required to separate 4th and 5th places with Geoff Rorke edging out Garry Wilkin, after both finished with 36 stableford points.

In the ladies competition, Elder was well out in front of the rest of the field but it was a fight for second place when Narelle Kriz and Daphne Cross had to be separated by a countback after both came in with 37 points.

Next best was Wan Sipatsa, Geraldine Francisco, Carmel Dunn (another sponsor descendant) and Fay Hardwick, who all posted 34 points with Ann Dunn, on 33 points, rounding out the top placings.

Nearest to the Pin prizes in the men’s competition were won by Greg Clark (B Grade) on the 3rd hole, Peter Robinson on the 7th hole, Geoff Rorke (C Grade) on the 8th hole and Jay Egan (A Grade) on the 15th hole while the winners in the ladies competition (judged on the 15th hole) were Fay Hardwick, Susan Goonrey and Pat Polack.
