Che Dionysius appointed as new Lands Council CEO

Newly appointed CEO of the Cobar Local Aboriginal Land Council (Cobar LALC), Che Dionysius, (second from right) was introduced to members at last Thursday’s Cobar LALC meeting. Ngiyampaa woman, Che Dionysius (or Che Griffiths as she is locally known), has been appointed as the Cobar Local Aboriginal Land Council’s (Cobar LALC) new Chief Executive Officer.

A proud traditional owner with a diverse skill set, Che has extensive experience working within the community.

“I hope to bring the Land Council back to how it was when I was growing up, with community events and people popping in for a yarn and cuppa,” Che told The Cobar Weekly following her appointment to the CEO’s role last week.

“I wanted to follow in my mother’s footsteps, she is my biggest inspiration advocating for indigenous people.

“My priorities will be getting a board together and mending and building relationships in the community with other organisations and the locals.”

Che will also have a focus on reestablishing links with the community to acknowledge NAIDOC Week, Survival Day and other culturally significant events.

“I would like to see positive change with a fresh start and new ideas on how we can move forward as an organisation in the community,” she said.

Che is hoping to engage with local stakeholders to support and foster improved outcomes for the local Aboriginal community.

She will be working out of Cobar LALC’s new office space next to the Post Office.

“It’s situated in a more central location with easier access for everyone,” Che said.

“I want to make it a place where people feel welcome and know they are able to come and say hello,” she said.

Stand-up comedian, Sean Michaels, hosted the Cobar workshop and explained how it worked.

“It is a bit of an introductory class, Life Drawing with a Comedian. If you don’t know what life drawing is, it’s being inspired by the life in front of you, typically they are nude,” he told The Cobar Weekly.

(Mr Michaels however did not pose nude for the Cobar workshop or other workshops on this tour.)

“We go through a bunch of different poses, teach participants how to draw life models first and then explore some different art styles.

“And by the end of it, we are giggling and we are laughing.

“You can have a couple of drinks along the way and, of course, it’s hosted by a comedian so it’s usually quite funny.

“Participants can expect to have a great time and also learn some things.

“Someone came up to me after a workshop and said ‘I enjoyed that. I really learned something’.

CSA Mine’s employees started their day off with a “proper coffee” on Friday as part of the mine’s International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations. (The night shift didn’t miss out as they got donuts.) Firearm produced during a fight Police were called to the intersection of Barton and Becker streets in the early hours of Sunday morning following a report of a fight.

Sergeant Warwick Laing said police had received reports of an altercation involving a group of males at around 12.10am.

“Information provided to police was that a rifle was produced by one of the males during this altercation,” Sergeant Laing said.

“Upon police arrival, a 43 year old male and a 41 year old male (both from Victoria) were found laying on the road suffering facial injuries.

“They were conveyed by ambulance to Cobar Hospital.”

The 43 year old was charged with a number of firearms offences and granted conditional bail to appear at Cobar Local Court next month.

“It is anticipated that the 41 year old will be charged with a number of firearms offences,” Sergeant Laing said.

Investigations are continuing into this incident. Anyone with information in relation to this incident is urged to contact Cobar Police.

Warm weather is sticking around

The unusually hot weather is set to continue with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a top of 37 today and 39 tomorrow.

The good news is the thermometer will then dip on Friday to 31 degrees with a slight chance of a shower in the afternoon.

The weekend is also expected to be the same with 31 forecast for both Saturday and Sunday and a slight chance of rain on both days.

The warmer nights also look set to stay with the Bureau predicting overnight minimums of 21 tomorrow, 22 on Friday, 17 on Saturday and 18 is the expected low on Sunday and Monday.

Monday’s mercury is expected to warm up to 33 degrees.

Last Wednesday we recorded a top of 37.1 degrees in Cobar.

Thursday was our hottest day of the week when it reached 37.6 degrees.

Friday had a high of 36.9 and Saturday topped out at 34.8 degrees.

Sunday was our coolest day of the week at 34 degrees.

Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and the landholder Graeme Barton as a bit of fun for Graeme had the idea of a Suzuki Drive back in 2018 to raise a bit of money and they took six vehicles to Tilpa.

It’s an event that’s grown over the years and last year they raised nearly $13,000 (and had to cap car numbers to 30).

Graeme explained all the vehicles make a donation to enter and many of the entrants also donate items for the auction which was held on Saturday night at the Tilpa Hotel.

This year they raised $25,920, almost double last year’s effort.

“They are doing all sorts of wonderful things in their village over there at Tilpa,” Graeme said.

“They’re putting turf down, built a park for the kids and now they are building a ‘rest room’ at the clinic.”

Graeme explained that because the RFDS doctors/specialists are allowed to only work for 10 hours (and that includes flying), they don’t get to spend much time at the clinic seeing patients.

The new ‘rest room’ with a fridge and microwave, will allow doctors to stay over to sleep and extend their stay a bit longer.

This year’s group of Graeme’s mates (who travelled from all over for the event), left Cobar on Friday morning and travelled leisurely to Tilpa through private properties.

Earthquake not felt in Cobar

A light magnitude 3.2 earthquake is reported to have occurred south west of Cobar last Thursday morning.

According to Geoscience Australia, the quake hit at 9.17am and had a very shallow depth of 2km and was not felt (or at least not reported to have been felt).

The following day a magnitude 3.6 earthquake in the Blue Mountains is reported to have been felt by more than 4,000 residents.

Aurelia welcomes visit by investors Aurelia Metals welcomed a group of analyists, investors and members of the media to Cobar last week.

The group was escorted by Aurelia’s managing director and CEO Bryan Quinn.

Their first stop was at the Federation Project near Nymagee where they had an underground inspection of the decline development face and diamond drill, followed by a tour of the surface structure.

An overview of exploration and mine geology activities in the Federation/Hera/Nymagee region concluded the visit at Federation.

Their next stop was at the Peak Gold Mine for a presentation on the Cobar regional operations, a tour of the underground mobile maintenance workshop and the high-grade Chronos Deposit to see a production drill and tele-remote loader in action.

The day concluded with a tour of Peak’s polymetallic process plant.

Mr Quinn said the day was integral to helping demonstrate the company’s future growth plans and future opportunities.

Funding for art

The Country Arts Support Program (CASP), an annual small grants program to support a creative and vibrant regional NSW, is now open.

Administered by Outback Arts and funded

by Create NSW, the program offers grants of up to $3,000 for projects starting from May this year.

Eligible activities include workshops, exhibitions, performances, artist-in-residence programs, and public art and design projects.

Last year’s CASP funding for the Outback Arts region totalled $17,000 and involved eight projects, one of which was in Cobar.

Outback Arts Executive Director Jamie-Lea Trindall said this long-running funding program is all about giving regional people access to a diverse range of cultural programs each year and bringing opportunities that may otherwise not be available.

“CASP is a significant annual investment directly into our region. This year we are hoping to see exciting new projects that celebrate and engage our remote communities,” she said.

Festivals funding is now available

Community festival organisers and regional arts workers are encouraged to apply for funding from the Festivals Australia program.

Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton said funding is now open in the latest round of the program for groups within the Parkes electorate.

“We’ve had success in the past, with festivals like the Broken Heel Festival in Broken Hill and the Pave the Way to Gular festival in Gulargambone receiving funding under this program,” Mr Coulton said.

“Up to $150,000 is available for individual arts projects or festivals that invite community participation and audience engagement.

“Projects can include, but are not limited to, a parade, performance, workshop, installation or exhibition.”

Applications for Round 18 of the Festivals Australia program close next week.

Cobar Swimming Club’s Clair Cousins and Isabelle Gillette competed at the 2024 Speedo Sprint Series Finals at Homebush earlier this month as part of the Western Area team, which was made up of 44 swimmers ranging in age from eight to 13 years from clubs all around the central west region. Isabelle and Clair had both qualified for four events each, and both came away with new personal best times in each event.

Form looks good in the lead up to National carnival

With only a couple of weeks left to prepare, a number of Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club members are looking to be in pretty good form in the run up to the National AIF Champions later this month.

Ben Plush has been turning in some very good times over the past few weeks and won the 30 metres handicapped freestyle event last Tuesday night when he finished within 0.03 seconds of his nominated time.

John Claus, another swimmer who appears to be peaking at the right time, was second on 0.13 and John Carswell was marginally behind with 0.15 seconds for third place.

Greg Dimond made a podium appearance last week after he won the 50m event with a time of 0.06 seconds off his nominated time.

Paul Swainston swam into second place with 0.12 seconds and Murray Harland was further back in third place on 0.25.

Swainston was the clear winner of the 100m swim after he finished within 0.41 seconds of his nominated time.

There was a tie for second place with Stephen Clark and James Daymond both clocking in with 0.84 seconds off their nominated times.

Swainston recorded his second win of the night when he teamed up with Carswell to win the Brace Relay novelty event.

The pair finished within 0.03 seconds of their combined nominated time.

Chris Powell and Bill Fugar placed second (1.06) and Shane Josephson and Clark were third (2.03).

Cobar triathlete now competes as an elite athlete Former Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) triathlete and Cobar course record holder, Hannah-Lee Young, is the AusTriathlon 2024 Australia Cross Triathlon Champion.

Young recently finished second in the TreX Cross Triathlon Snowy Mountains event (just behind her coach Jacqui Allen).

It secured her a spot on the Australian team destined for the 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships, a 12 day event to be contested in August in Townsville.

Carter & Goonrey had a “blinder” to win bowls game

Plenty to squawk about

Sunday’s social bowlers at the Golfie appreciated the cool breeze which provided much needed relief from the scorching sun.

There was a good turn out of 21 players to make up five games.

Shane Carter and John Goonrey “had a blinder” of a game kicking off with a five point win and they maintained their momentum with consecutive two point advantages to be 15 shots up with only five ends left to play!

Goonrey, dubbed outstanding bowler on the greens, demonstrated pin-point precision bowling that was unrivalled!

Their opposition, David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Bayley Prendergast made a valiant attempt to claw their way back but, alas, it was too little too late as Team Goonrey were declared outright winners of the day by +9.

The day’s runners-up on +6 were Triples dynamos Bian Smith, newbie Jason Gavin and double lead Jimmy Goonrey who won their match against Doug Hudson, another newbie Shaun Doherty and Goonrey.

The scorecard revealed that Team Smith The Pink Galahs 13-16 years Junior Touch team had plenty to squawk about after hogged the mat for most of play and yet again winning both their double-header matches on Thursday at Ward Oval. Henry qualifies for state carnival

Cobar High School swimmers Henry Knight and Josh Francisco competed at the Western Swimming Championships in Dubbo on Monday.

Of the seven events he competed in, Henry recorded three 2nd places in his 17 years 50m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke and 100m Butterfly and three 3rd places in his 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley events which qualifies him to swim at the state carnival.

Josh competed in the Boys 14 years 50m Freestyle and missed out on a podium finish.

Bumblebees win two close, exciting touch matches Junior Touch players doubled up and played two shortened games last Thursday after their Round 4 games from the week before were cancelled due to storms.

In the 9-12 years age division, Yellow Bumblebees won both of their games beating the Blue Smurfs by just one point and then they got the better of Red Roosters to win by two points in their second game.

Both games were close, exciting matches.

In their 5-4 win over Smurfs, Bumblebees’ Austin Kane (2), Jessica Rogers and Riley Bruce ran in tries to help them to their narrow win.

Smurfs’ points all came from Holly Watt, who recorded two tries. (Female tries are worth double points.)

Austin and Holly shared the referee’s Best & Fairest points along with Tom Preisig (Smurfs).

In the Bumblebees’ 5-3 win over the Roosters, tries for Bumblebees were recorded by Billy Watt (2), Jessica Rogers and Josh Gillette.

In reply, Eligh Ritter (2) and Judd Josephson scored for Roosters.

Billy, Kasalia Fakahua (Roosters) and Hannah Trudgett (Bumblebees) shared in the game’s B&F points.

In the other two 9-12 years games, Smurfs had a big 11-3 win over Orange Hounds and Roosters also beat the Orange Hounds, 11-2.

The Blossoms triumphantly return to the winner’s circle The Blossoms returned to the winner’s circle with a big 17-0 win over Guns N’ Hoses in their Open Mixed Touch Round 5 game on Thursday night at Ward Oval.

Sosie Barton ran away to score five tries in the match and, with female tries worth double, she contributed 10 points, (more than half) to The Blossoms’ big tally.

Jaxon Burke scored three times, Rowdy Barton crossed twice and Oisin McMullen and Anthony Walker added a point each with their tries.

Barton, Burke and Jack Fazulla (Guns N’ Hoses) shared in the referee’s Best & Fairest points.

The closest match of the night was played between last season’s grand finalists, King Roosters and Concrete Cowboys, with King Roosters winning this encounter 9-7.

Tries for King Roosters were scored by Aisha Schofield, Kai Taylor, Molly Carter, Sophie Clark, Tadgh McMullen and Zane Taylor.

In reply, Bridgette Negfeldt, Neve Carter, Rori Urquhart and Zac Broughton scored a try each for Concrete Cowboys.

Local competes at first weight lifting competition Local Ethan McLeod competed at his first weight lifting competition on Sunday at Nemesis Fitness in Dubbo.

The 15 year old, who weighs 62.7kg, lined up against a field of 20 competitors ranging from novice to professional.

He squat lifted 107.5kg (which was a personal best for him), bench pressed 60kg and deadlifted 115kg (which was also a personal best effort) to finish the competition with a total weight of 282.5kg.

Michael Bannister was six shots back in second place with 29 points and third place went to a new player to town, Rambasa ‘Rambo’ Phuluson, who hails from South Africa.

‘Rambo’ hits a big ball and played off a provisional handicap of 13.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Dean McLeod on the 7th hole and Rambo won the prize on the 8th hole.

This Saturday’s game is a four ball Multiplier, so players will need to organise a partner.

Sunday’s game is an individual Stableford.

Brien and Potter live up to the hype

The big golf news of the week was Peter ‘China’ Brien and Johnny Potter winning the Net division of the NSW Four-Ball-BestBall Championships in Trundle over the weekend.

There was a huge field of 200 golfers and Cobar had 16 players and former Cobar players in contention this year.

The winners of the gross event were Nathan Schnieder and Vaughan Saunders of Beechworth and Thurgoona with a winning score was 89 stableford points.

The best-placed Cobar player was Andrew Bartlett, who was paired with former Cobar golfer, Warrick Doulman.

They finished with a score of 80.

However, it was the Net event where the real golf came from and, as predicted last week, big things were expected from Brien and Potter and they didn’t disappoint when they won by one shot with a score of 97 points.

Their win throws all the theories of golf preparation out the window: apparently all you have to do is forget golf practice and play regular bowls (as China did), or play one game of golf every six months (like Potter does) and that’s all you have to do to win at golf these days.

In local golf news, despite the cream of the Cobar Men’s Golf competition playing in Trundle, there were however still good fields at home on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s event was a Par game and once again it was Greg Clark who blew the field away and finished as the only player with a plus score, +3. Second place with –1, was Jarrod Marsden and John Carlaw was third with – 4.

Tony Polack lived up to his nick-name of “nozzle” (sprays the ball around) by coming in with –6.

What’s Peter Brien’s and John Potter’s recipe for golfing success? To do anything else Carlaw and Jason Foster were the only two but practicing golf! The pair, without much preparation, won the Net division of the NSW players to win a Nearest the Pin prize.
