The 2023 rally route was to follow the Darling inland river flow and take participants on a journey of discovery as they travelled through Queensland and western New South Wales.

“Big towns, little towns, no towns, bush tracks, camp fires, communities and cultures” were all part of the experience the rally offered to participants.

Since 2016, GIVIT has been the charity of choice for the Road Boss Rally and in that time they have raised over $1.5 million.

GIVIT works with over 4,500 charities across Australia with charities and organisations that need help making requests to GIVIT. It may range from a single child or adults in need or an orgaisation that needs either financial assistance or resources.

Cobar Mobile Children’s Services’ Ngalii Preschool and Cobar Mobile Playgroup were beneficiaries this year with GIVIT donating resources to both projects.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler has applauded the State Government’s ‘Single Employer Model’ trial program which aims to get more junior doctors working in regional areas.

“Recently the government announced that 80 junior doctors could be working in our regions next year under a trial program,” Mr Butler said.

“The ‘single employer model’ allows trainees in General Practice wanting to become Rural Generalists to be employed under one employer, within one health district, for up to four years,” Mr Butler explained.

The model also allows for them to transition between their General Practice and their rural hospital.

“It provides certainty to the trainee around location, income and working conditions, and it helps us grow our own doctors in the bush.

“Since being elected, health services in Barwon have been my priority, reversing some of the decline in our regional health system.

“Programs like this are an important part of the bigger picture,” Mr Butler said.

“I look forward to seeing the results.”

Outback Archies is back in 2023

Entries open next week for the 2023 Outback Archies Art Prize, an Outback Arts project that is now in its 13th year!

The Outback Archies has grown each year, shining a light on the diverse and talented creatives in our region, as they celebrate and explore the theme ‘Legends and Landscapes’.

This year Outback Arts has teamed up with a number of key partners which will once again extend the reach of this project.

Entries will be accepted from not only the Outback Arts region of Cobar, Bourke, Brewarrina, Bogan, Coonamble, Warren and Walgett Shires but entries will also be accepted from Gilgandra, Narrabri, Moree, Gunnedah, Liverpool Plains, Gwydir, Tamworth, Broken Hill, Wentworth Shire, Central Darling Shire and the Western Unincorporated Area – that’s 18 Local Government Areas in total!

The 2023 Art Prize will also cater for creative youth in Regional New South Wales with the Young Archies competition, featuring two categories, Primary School and High School.

Youth entries may explore any medium of their choosing.

Other categories include the major Outback Archies Prize, a People’s Choice, an Aboriginal Art Award plus first and second prizes will be awarded for each category of Ceramics, Sculpture, Two Dimensional and Photography.

There’s a total prize pool of $10,000 and the potential for winners to exhibit their works in partner galleries.

This year a large group of Cobar Public School students have been invited to join a 2023 Moorambilla Ensemble. The Moorambilla team delivered a music skills workshop to the school’s Years 3-6 students in March this year which was highly enjoyed by all. Two significant donations made

The Cobar Hospital Auxiliary committee, a fundraising group which raises money for our local health service, held their annual general meeting last Wednesday.

Sharon Harland was returned to the presidents position with long serving secretary Beryl Martin also returned to her role (for her 23rd year). Heather Collins retained her treasurer’s position.

Former long-serving president, Phyllis Budd was named as the group’s Patron for another term.

New member, Leonie McCosker has taken on the role of vice president this year.

In her president’s report Mrs Harland said the committee had been pleased to make two significant donations to the hospital this year to help improve the comfort of patients.

They included two electric recliners (valued at $6,066) and also a folding mobile privacy screen ($2,400), which was a co-purchase with the COHOES Cobar Old Boys Rugby League club.

Members also donated two baskets of toiletries for use by patients in emergency situations.

THE ROLE We now have an opportunity available for Electricians to join our Operations & Maintenance team in Cobar, NSW on a full time permanent basis. Reporting to the Regional Manager, you will play a key role in providing the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of high-pressure transmission pipeline system.

Wet conditions close the course The only Men’s Golf competition game played over the weekend was an individual Stableford on Sunday.

The course was closed on Saturday, and adding to the low turn-out, some of the players were away on a fishing trip while others were lazing their day away playing bowls.

There were only eight players for the Stableford and Mark Martin won the day with a par score of 36 points, beating Greg Clark on a count-back.

Brad Bannister came third when he was one shot further back.

The only Nearest the Pin prize was won by Ray Yench and that was on the 8th hole.

Things are starting to hot-up in the Bill Bartlett MatchPlay Competition.

In this round Brien Obray outclassed Jay Egan while Peter ‘China’ Brien has yet to settle accounts with his opponent Mark ‘George’ Fraser.

There were mixed results for the 12 Cobar ladies on the Sunday with Jenny Stephenson the Scratch runner-up in A Grade, Tena Blignaut was the B Grade Net runner-up while Brenda Fugar won the Longest Drive prize in B Grade. Nyngan were the RoseBowl winners for 2023.

Golfie greens attract bowlers

Cobar’s Golfie greens continue to draw avid bowlers from far and wide with Victorian bowler Neville Curtis and South Australians Julie-Anne and John McGrath among the big field of 34 social bowlers at the Golfie on Sunday.

John ‘Shark’ Daly, Peter ‘China’ Brien and Greg Clark took on Curtis, Doug Hudson and Kelly Beard on rink 4.

Curtis’ side started strong leading by six shots however Shark’s team were not perturbed and the scores were even two ends later.

After another four ends, the teams were still going head to head. From then on, Clark and his ‘new to him’ bowls, combined with China’s and Shark’s recent State games experience, saw the team through to a +11 win to give them bragging rights for the day.

The runners-up for the day (who were six shots up by the second end) were David ‘Ooze’ Knight, Shane Carter, Phil Blackman and Chloe Blackman (a new teacher to Cobar). Their opponents were Lex Lowe, Allan Knight, Clayton Blackman and Maddison Bridgette Negfeldt (with the ball) was one of Cobar’s stand-out players in their 20-6 win Blackman.

End to end play ensued as both sides tried to improve the scoreline.

Gulgong scored the final try of the match after taking advantage of a gap created by over -exuberant defence by a Roosters player on their line and the conversion saw them through to a 34-20 win.

The Roosters are at home this Saturday to Coonamble while Cobar’s Reserve Graders Cobar’s Tyler Coughlan storming through the Gulgong Bull Terriers’ defence during host Gilgandra for their first game of the season.
